DON'T BUG ME Kennedy Theatre premiers psychological thriller

OPINIONS EMI A IKO Staff Writer As the nation contemplated the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, members of the University of Hawai‘i Army ROTC refl ected on their own fi rsthand experiences at home and abroad. “The incident [9/11] not only changed me, but changed everybody. I don’t think anybody saw the world the same way after Sept. 11,” said senior military instructor Master Sergeant Martin A. Soto, who joined the Army in 1987, helped in rescue efforts fol-

lowing the 9/11 attacks, and has been teaching military science at UH AROTC for four years. “We’ve been committed to two wars for 10 years. We are not able to see our family, as we used to, since our brothers and sisters are still fi ghting the war right now. It changed the whole spectrum of living.” Following 9/11, an international military campaign termed the “War on Terror” began with the invasion of Afghanistan, announced by the Bush administration on Oct. 7, 2001. Some days were tough, but for the most time, I didn’t have a bad time given the certain circumstances.” Cook joined the Army in 2004

to earn money for college. “I didn’t have a notion of patriotic [motivation], just to make a better life. But when I look back, it was a good decision for me. It opened up a lot of opportunities, and I learned a lot about the culture. It helped me to grow.” After deployment in Iraq, Cook enrolled at Chaminade University to major in psychology while serving as a cadet in the UH AROTC. UH AROTC was established in 1914, during World War I, to instruct students in military training. Currently, there are a total of
