EMI A IKO Staff Writer More than 20,000 students attend the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, and with them come the perennial concerns of daily traffi c and the scramble for a parking space on campus or neighboring streets. But although the latest campus transportation survey at UHM reported driving as the primary means of accessing campus, there has been a dramatic

change in commute patterns in recent years. “We have an exciting opportunity to begin looking holistically about our travel behavior,” wrote Mark D. Gilbert, campus planner at the Office of Physical, Environmental and Long Range Planning, in an email. “Land constraints and tightened fi nances have made parking provision a costly and suboptimal solution. “We are excited to become a model for Honolulu in the next few years by supporting multi-modal commuting and effectively reducing our collective vehicle miles traveled substantially.
