1

Cut a hole at the top of the pumpkin wide enough for your hand to fit through. Angle your knife 45 degrees inward to prevent the top from falling inside the pumpkin.

2

Using a spoon, remove the seeds from the pumpkin.

3

Draw your desired design on the outside of your pumpkin in dark marker. If it is a printed design, pin the paper to the pumpkin, and poke holes along the lines of the design. Remove the paper when finished.

4

Dave and Buster’s is every adult’s dream establishment – a restaurant and bar complete with giant arcade, pool lounge and dance floor. That’s why Aloha Nights has concocted the perfect mixes of libations so you can have the ultimate D&B experience.

Gently begin cutting the lines or holes with your knife. If a carved chunk falls inside the pumpkin, remove it from the top.

5

Remove all the carved pieces by pushing either inside or pulling towards the outside, depending on the slant of the cut.

6

Lastly, place a candle inside (batterypowered candles are available at drug stores for those living in dorm rooms).

WINE

STRATEGIC GAMES

D&B offers white, red and blush wines, like Ecco Domani’s Pinot Noir. A classy drink is meant for sipping whilst playing strategic chipshooting games like “Wheel of Fortune Pushers.” Or skip the games and head to the deck. The deck boasts lounge seating, a full bar and a dance floor – once the wine runs out, show everyone your sweet moves.

SUGARY DRINKS

REFLEX GAMES

Drinks like the Purple People Eater or Strawberry Watermelon Margarita come with vodka and rims coated in flavored sugar – adding a boost of energy to help your hand-eye coordination. These drinks are perfect for games like “Jumping Jackpot,” a virtual jump rope game, or “Speed of Light,” a game that tests how many times you can hit lit orbs in a minute.

BEER

POOL LOUNGE

D&B offers 10 import and 10 domestic beers, including Stella Artois and New Castle Brown Ale. Beer is perfect for laidback settings like the pool lounge, where you can play billiards all night.

COCKTAILS

COMPETITIVE GAMES

There are eight cocktails that pair with competition. Test your skills in the basketball favorite, “Nothing but Net,” with a glass of Lynchburg Lemonade – whiskey, triple sec and lemonade or race down Hawaiian streets in “Grid,” with a Big Wave Dave, which contains vodka, watermelon pucker, blue Curacao and Sprite. PHOTOS BY NOEL HAHN, DAVID JORDAN AND JIMMY EDENS

No matter what you choose, D&B will not disappoint. But remember that underage drinking is strictly prohibited. Those under 21 can still get in with a 25-year-old sponsor until 10 p.m. to enjoy the games and don’t worry: milkshakes go with any game.

If you’re looking for ghosts, a seafood restaurant might not be the first thing that comes to mind – but it should be.

Karai Crab, in addition to their selection of savory seafood, boasts some of the spiciest food you can find on the island. Their extra spicy “Ghost Pepper Heat” will floor you and haunt your mouth afterwards.

The truly brave will want to take on the Ghost Chicken Wing Challenge, where you have 30 minutes sans liquids to down 12 wings. But even if you manage to down the wings in 10 minutes, you still need to wait out the 30-minute time frame before you win. If that’s too scary for you, stick to what’s safe: their Lemon Pepper sauce is spicy (and healthy; there’s no butter or oil in this one). Try it on their Karai Combo of shrimp, clams, crawfish, mussels, potato, corn and sausage. Enjoy Halloween with a twang on your tongue instead of total self-immolation.

PAGE DESIGNER KALANI WARE

Whether you’re 12 or 21, Halloween is a big deal. As a child, you carefully planned out your trick-or-treating route to maximize the sweets and minimize the scares. As a college student, your game plan may be a little different, but here is how Eggs ‘n Things will aid you.

WEB DEVELOPER SAMMY KHAMIS PR EVENT COORDINATOR NATALIE FRANCE Aloha Nights is Ka Leo’s entertainment guide, a paid advertising supplement produced by the Ka Leo advertising department. This section features articles and information on dining, drinking, fashion, music, concerts, art and more. Aloha Nights will be a monthly publication distributed inside Ka Leo special issues through May 2014. If you have suggestions, comments or concerns please contact the Advertising department at: Hemenway Hall 107 2445 Campus Rd. Honolulu, HI 96822 808-956-7043 Advertising@kaleo.org

1. PRIME LOCATION

Eggs ‘n Things has three locations and all three are close to where most college students spend Halloween: Waikiki. Starting your night at any Eggs ’n Things ensures that you stay near the action.

2. PROTEIN BOOST

To keep yourself from collapsing after a long night, you need protein, and a good source of protein is eggs. Try an Eggs ’n Things’ speciality: three-egg omelets ($10.45-$12.95). Fill them with hearty options like corned beef hash or bacon, or settle for a healthier vegetable alternative.

3. SUGAR HIGH

Satisfy your Halloween sweet tooth. Crepes ranging in price from $11.25 to $12.95 come with your choice of fruit like banana, blueberry and strawberry, topped with powdered sugar. Choose your favorite among “the best pancakes in Hawaii” ($10.25-$12.75), from macadamia nut and chocolate chip to fruit whipped cream with nuts. 451 Piikoi St. 808-538-3447

DON’T DO

Monster makeup and elaborate costumes look amazing, but in a few hours you will be sick of keeping it up. Plan ahead: If you know your costume will be uncomfortable, bring something else to slip into so you don’t have to suffer through a fun night. A good costume shouldn’t hold you back.

Try making your own costume. There’s no need to buy the same costume as everyone else. You can check out thrift stores or work with what you already have. Cut-up jeans, stained shirts or any goofy stuff you find can be altered to make something more unique than what you can buy at the store.

Be afraid to do a group costume.

DON’T

WEDNESDAY OCT. 2, 2013

You know which costumes are going to be overdone. Expect to see a lot of “sexy” (insert noun here) and popular video game and movie characters. Stand out by putting your own spin on things.

Try to do too much.

VOLUME 2 ISSUE 2

ALOHA NIGHTS

Be clever.

Costumes with a running theme are more interesting than a single person trying to go it alone. What would Finn be without Jake or Princess Bubblegum? You could even pull out that Rainbow Warrior pride and transform your friends into a box of UH-brand Rainbow Crayons.

Whatever you decide to do, keep it clever, classy and fun. It’s about having a good time, no matter what you wear.

CLEOPATRA

WALDO WIKI This is a simple yet incredibly fun costume. Interact with people by telling them you’re lost or mentioning the other characters from the book. • • • • •

Red or white beanie Glasses Red or white long-sleeved shirt Red or white duct tape Jeans

Depending on what color beanie or shirt you have, use tape in the opposite color (red tape and a white beanie, or vice versa) to create stripes.

This Egyptian queen is a saucy costume paired with wild makeup to create a real wow factor. • • • •

Sheet Belt Gold headband or chain Lots of gold bangles

Wrap the sheet around yourself as a toga, and secure the belt at the waist. Add the gold headband over, straightened hair, or use a gold chain in place of a headband and secure it with pins. Use liquid eyeliner to draw cat eyes.

AUDREY HEPBURN This is a chance to show off your diva side. Watch “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” beforehand to learn your character. • Black dress • Large dark sunglasses • Black elbow gloves • Long pearl necklace • Tiara If you don’t already own a long black dress, then Goodwill is the best option. If you have a short black dress, pair it with black tights. Fix your hair in an extravagant updo and perch the tiara on top. Pair it with winged eyeliner and nude or soft pink lips.

GUIDELINES of a

SCARE YOUR GUESTS!

SOLO CUP ROSELLE JULIAN LEAD DESIGNER

SAMMI BAUMGARTNER ADVERTISING STAFF WRITER Halloween is notorious for carved pumpkins, brimming bags of candy and above all else, horror. Although scary movies and décor are great ways to terrify someone, sometimes the best way to scare is via prank.

12

BEER

>> CLOWNIN’ AROUND

OUNCES

A prank meant for that special someone that cringes at the sight of clowns. 1. Purchase a clown mask at the nearest party store, such as Party City or a thrift shop. 2. Catch your pretty off guard. Hide in their closet late at night, and wait for them to discover you, or give them a loud wakeup call with a fake chainsaw.

WINE

5

OUNCES

>> CREEPY GIRL A prank the Japanese have long perfected. 1. Find an image of a creepy girl or boy online. The characters of “The Grudge” or “The Ring” are perfect. Head to FedEx to print out a large cutout of the image; printing should be fairly cheap despite the size. 2. Tape the cutout in a corner of your friend’s closet while they are out, wait for them to come home and listen for the scream!

>> ALIEN INVASION Scare the wits out of someone that does not like the idea of extraterrestrials. 1. Find a larger alien prop at Party City or online. 2. Place the alien in front of a window so it becomes a silhouette when the sun goes down. 3. Wait for your friend to come home to an “empty” house/ apartment/dorm, and watch their reaction.

OUNCE

HOW TO DRINK IN M O D E R AT I O N ROSELLE JULIAN LEAD DESIGNER • • • • • •

Have a “spacer,” or non-alcoholic beverage, between drinks. Drink small and slow. Take sips – not gulps. Keep track of how much alcohol you are consuming. If you’re drinking high-alcohol content drinks, slow down. Read the labels. Some cans may contain more alcohol content than you expect. Make sure you don’t have an empty stomach. Alcohol will be absorbed more slowly when there’s food in you. • Salty snacks make you thirsty. • Don’t just sit and drink. If you keep busy, you tend to drink less. • It’s OK to say no – don’t let anyone pressure you into drinking more.
