A male reported damage to his vehicle’s passenger side door keyhole at 11:51 a.m.

The vehicle was parked on Upper Campus.

At 8:21 a.m. a caller from Hamilton Library reported a homeless man sleeping on a bench at Paradise Palms Cafe.

The male suspect was was asked to leave, but was not compliant. CS officers on the scene recorded his information.

A Sinclair Library staff member reported that her car had been broken into at 5:48 p.m. The staff member confirmed that an ashtray containing $0.75 had been taken. The responding officer offered HPD assistance, but it was declined.

Mānoa to celebrate new Earth Day

At 2:34 a.m. RAs from Frear Hall called in a general fire alarm activation. CS and the Hawai‘i Fire Department responded.

A Frear Hall RA requested assistance from CS for a domestic fight in one of the dorm rooms.

F R I DAY, A P R I L 8 At 7:35 p.m. a UH staff member had a seizure in one of the Kuykendall classrooms and was later transported to the hospital by Campus Security.

RAs reported a fight in the Hale Aloha Courtyard at 11:00 p.m. The victim claimed to have been assaulted by another male suspect, but declined the offer to file a report with the Honolulu Police Department.

K ATRINA OH Contributing Writer Earth Day, celebrated internationally on April 22, is making its way to the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

The campus event, organized and supported by Ecology Club members, will be on Thursday, April 21, because the next day is Good Friday. The event, beginning at 10 a.m., will take place around the walkway between Dole Street and Campus Center.

Activities include sustainability workshops, unplugged live performances, an eco-fashion show and local organic food.

Organizers Damian McPherson and Andrew Farwell became interested in Earth Day due to their commitment to the environment. After learning that no other student had offered to spearhead campus Earth Day events, McPherson volunteered to do so.

“UH does not have a mechanism for this event, and ... little to

no support by the university for Earth Day,” he said.

E A R T H DAY R E FA S H I O N E D McPherson and Farwell said their goal for this year’s Earth Day is to “stray away from pre vious Earth Days, which were simply like an ecofriendly shop ping center.”

Instead, they would like to “accent UH’s sustainability courtyard, and have the event be a living laboratory, where you can go there and see sustainability in progress.”

Farwell explained, “The kind of emphasis we want to make is tangible education where the university and students showcase efforts: what’s available, what’s already going on, having workshops, what’s to come – a kind of promotion for the future.”

Farwell described his interest in preserving the environment as “kind of inherent; we grew up this way, with a huge appreciation believing that we were

meant to do better with [our] lives. It’s ... about the best ways we can make a change.”

He also states that he grew up in a struggling, single -parent home that taught him to rely less on material goods, and more on personal ingenuity. “I turned more to necessity. You learn to grow your own food, save electricity, save money, and you get to see firsthand how amazing nature is.”

A L A S T I N G C OMM I TM E N T Farwell and McPherson also plan to make Earth Day awareness extend beyond the day itself.

“We can follow up on people after the day and promote further growth. Earth Day is 365 days a year,” McPherson said. “We take [Earth Day] and we plant a bunch of seeds in people’s minds because of that day. They have a visual in their mind about how many people actually use plastic bags.”

McPherson and Farwell already have suggestions for mak-

ing ever yday life environmentally friendly.

“We want to promote people to reduce, reuse, recycle and refuse to use certain things. Buy locally grown foods, support farmers markets or grow your own food,” Farwell said.

“Start a relationship with nature daily. Walk, skateboard, take the bus, and soon it turns into a routine,” McPherson said. “Give a plant (as a gift), because most things in society you have to pay for, and people see how giving plants is a gift and they start to plant plants.”

These actions are described as “personal, organizational and corporate pledges to live and act sustainably,” according to the Earth Day Network.

‘Source Code’ makes every second count NICK WEBSTER Staff Writer What would you do if you knew you had less than a minute to live? This is the question posed

by U.S. Army Captain Colter Stevens, Jake Gyllenhaal’s character in the sci-fi thriller “Source Code,” which opened last week.

Like the fi lm itself, Stevens’ simple hypothetical question stirs both thought and emotion.

Directed by English director Duncan Jones, the film is a follow up to his critically acclaimed 2009 debut “Moon.” To put it simply, it’s “Groundhog Day” meets TV’s “24.”

Thankfully, Gyllenhaal is more Phil Connors and less Jack Bauer.

Stevens, a soldier who recently returned from duty in Afghanistan, is now part of a new program that puts him into the last eight minutes of a recently deceased person’s life.

The fi lm does not spend very much time explaining the science of it, which is for the better. After all, we give “Star Trek” and “Star

mission to fi nd out who planted the bomb in order to prevent a pending second attack. When Stevens dies in the computer simulation, it starts over, and he starts living the last eight minutes of school teacher Sean Fentress’ life over and over again.

Jones is able to creatively do a lot with a limited story. A scene that can last no more than eight minutes is repeated several times over, which sets things up to be repetitive and mundane.

However, the trips back into the simulation are each done in a different way, and each shows Stevens’ progression as a likable character. After realizing that everyone around him lost his or her lives, he starts to think about his relationship with his father, and begins to regret not speaking to him for such a long time.

Stevens also progresses in his understanding of the simulation and its capabilities. He starts out slowly; memorizing what will happen next, and eventually announcing it to Christina (Michelle

Monaghan), the female passenger sitting across from him.

We’re fast forwarded through the inessential trips, and several attempts later, while still searching for the identity of the bomber, Stevens begins to fall for his fellow passenger. While his program directors repeatedly tell him that what he’s experiencing is just a simulation, and he can do nothing to change the fate of those in the simulation, he refuses to believe it, and makes saving the lives of everyone on board, specifically Christina’s, his new priority.

THE VERDICT “Source Code” is recommended for fans of “The Matrix,” “Inception,” “Avatar,” and good movies in general. Disregard the absurdness of the premise, and you’re given a thought provoking film. 4/5 stars.

With the closure of popular entertainment venue Pipeline Café in February, BAMP Project has announced plans to launch their own concert venue, called The Republik, later this year.

BA MP Project, a Hawai‘i concert production company which has organized over 200 shows, has partnered with Charles “Chip” Jewitt, a veteran bar and nightclub owner, to create a “premium atmosphere” for all genres of music.

“It has always been a goal for us to open our own concert venue,” said Matty Hazelgrove, cofounder of BAMP Project. “And now with the closure of Pipeline Café, we felt it was a good time to fill an obvious void for a midsized venue.”

Although details are still being worked out, CAMP, LLC – a new company formed by BAMP Project founders along with Jewitt – has signed a multi-year lease with Watumull Properties to open The Republik.

The new entertainment venue will not only host concerts but also fundraisers, art exhibitions and other non music-related events.

Through an alliance with Eggshell Lighting Company, Inc and Hawai‘i Pro Sound & Video Rentals, The Republik will feature national entertainment acts with “world-class” lighting, video and audio.

Although details are still being fi nalized, The Republik is expected to open on Kapi‘olani Boulevard, in the former China House Restaurant location.

That doesn’t mean, however, that there are no plans in the works for the new venue.

In order to establish the brand of The Republik, BAMP Project has announced the lineup for the inaugural “Republik Music Festival” to be held on June 11 at Kaka‘ako Waterfront Park.

The festival will feature bands

and artists such as Dirty Heads, Rebelution, Steel Pulse and Matisyahu with opening acts by The Green and Maui-based band, The Throwdowns.

BAMP Project hopes that this star-studded lineup of reggae and island music acts will be a strong foundation for the start of Honolulu’s newest concert venue.

“The Republik is going to be a gathering place for anyone and everyone who loves music just as much as we do,” Hazelgrove said.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR BRYAN C HEN Accounting and Finance Major I don’t understand why people were offended by the Spring Break swimsuit issue of Ka L eo, it ’s pretty easy to understand the reason for that issue. Here’s a breakdown: 1. The University of Hawai‘i is located in Hawai‘i 2. Hawai‘i is known for its beaches 3. During Spring Break, many people enjoy going to the beach 4. At the beach, people wear swimsuits 5. Unlike men, who have limited selection in swimwear, women have many different types of swimsuits they can buy.

6. Women sometimes don’t know what type of swimsuit they would like to purchase, and would like some ideas.

There were also some suggestions to make the issue not sexist and not degrading to women, which I also did not understand.

S U G G E S T I O N 1: P U T M E N IN THE ISSUE. From my understanding of this, the belief is that pictures

of women in swimsuits are sexist and degrading to women, but men in swimsuits are OK? W hat ’s sexist is drawing a line between what is OK and what isn’t based on gender. If pictures of women in swimsuits are offensive, why aren’t pictures of men?

SUGGESTION 2: PUT WOM E N O F “D I F F E R E N T B O DY T Y P E S” I N T H E ISSUE AS WELL. So it would be okay to have pictures of unf it women in swimsuits, but if they are phys ically f it it objectif ies women in a negative way? Dif ferentiating bet ween good and bad based on looks sounds prett y shallow to me. If pictures of unf it women in swimsuits are OK , what makes pictures of physically f it women in swimsuits so immoral?

I have no problem with the Spring Break swimsuit issue.

I don’t draw moral lines based on gender and looks. I don’t understand why some people feel the need to pity women when all the women I know are proud, comfortable individuals who are happy with the way they are and aren’t ashamed to show it.

Key matchup: Chicago swingmen vs. Danny Granger The Bulls are strong at the point and in the middle, but Indiana’s small forward can exploit holes in Chicago’s defense.

Playoff fact: Indiana made the Playoffs 16 out of 17 years prior to the 2006 -‘07 season. This is their fi rst time qualifying since.

Torres ready to take charge

Warriors conclude spring practice with Warrior Bowl JOE F ERRER Senior Staff Writer

One would think a team losing three -fourths of its starting secondar y would need some time to grow.

But the remainder of the quartet – 5 -foot-8-inch senior safety Richard Torres – is already hitting his stride.

Mana Silva, Jeramy Bryant and Lametrius Davis were starters in the defensive backfield for the 2010 Warrior football team, but have

wrapped up their UH careers.

Now, the torch is passed to Torres, and fans will get a sneak peek at him and the rest of the 2011 squad at the team’s annual Warrior Bowl, which will close spring practice. The full-contact intra-squad scrimmage will be held Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Clarence T.C. Ching Field.

Following spring workouts, the Warrior football coaches said they believe Torres’ leadership will help ease the holes on defense.

“They’re [the seniors] all good football players, and we wish them well,” defensive backs coach Rich Miano said. “[But] with Richard Torres coming back, he’s really our leader out there.”

After all, leadership runs in the Torres family’s genes. Richard’s father, Reggie Torres, is the head coach of Kahuku High School, one of Hawai‘i’s most successful prep football programs and Richard’s alma mater.

The UH coaches have taken notice of Torres’ maturity, and said they believe he could wear a coach’s headset when his playing career concludes.

“He knows ever ything. He knows where [the of fense is] going with the ball. He lines up our secondar y,” Warrior head coach Greg McMackin said.

“He’s a f uture coach. [Torres playing is] like having another coach on the f ield.”

Torres started 13 games last year and recorded 57 tackles, two interceptions, and two fumble recoveries – one of which he returned 57 yards for a touchdown against Idaho.

With another year of experience and a great spring camp under his belt, Torres will look to lead his defense to another successful season on the field.

“He’s as good as anybody in the countr y,” McMackin said.

“He’s making all kinds of plays in the spring – he gets better ever y year.”

Senior Tank Hopkins and sophomore John Hardy-Tuliau also look to help fill the secondary positions.

Hopkins is a junior college transfer from Texas that redshirted last year and looks to take over a starting role as cornerback.

“Tank is the fastest guy on our football team,” McMackin said.

“He’s gonna have a great year.”

Hardy-Tuliau was the Warriors’ fifth defensive back in nickel situations last season as a true freshman.

Overall, depth charts for fall camp could be determined during the Warrior Bowl, as the UH coaches will evaluate their players during the scrimmage. “ We have some young talent, but the biggest thing is to coach them all to be a team,” McMackin said.
