Trims

Different Period Trims Decorative trims are an important element often present in period properties: they add interest, texture, and historical character to a room.

Picture Rails Originally used for attaching hooks to hang pictures, this trim makes the ceiling plane a focal point. For homeowners with ceilings high enough to install a new rail, a space of approximately 30 cm should be left between the rail and the ceiling.

Dado Rails These rails’ original function was to prevent the walls being scuffed by the backs of chairs. Now, they can be a good way of dividing a wall into two sections. Dado rails should be positioned at about hip height on the wall, and artwork hung above this line. Using a bold color on the section of the wall above the rail makes a strong aesthetic statement.

Architrave This type of trim has been traditionally used to frame windows, doors, and built-in cupboards, and can help to prevent the surrounding plaster from cracking. The corner joints of an architrave are mitered, and the wood is often painted.
