The colored or patterned brickwork that is a feature of much Victorian architecture is the result of the use of Flemish brick bonds; in this brickmaking process, headers and stretchers were alternated to create the distinctive design often noted on these types of property.
Victorian architecture tends to feature characteristic window design; sash and bay windows were widely incorporated, as were arched windows. Grander properties may also feature stained glass.
Roofing Features A look at a house’s roof can also help identify it as having been constructed in the Victorian era. High pitched roofs are a common feature, as is the presence of ornate roof details such as carved ornaments and finials. Such roofs are often made of slate, or sometimes ornate clay.
Other Features The incorporation of a porch is also a clue that a house might be Victorian; as they were a sign of status, where they are present, they are likely to be elaborate. Date stones are a common feature, too; look out for them above the front door of a property.
