Motormouth November was a busy month for car lovers—five motoring events and two car shows, happening in close intervals. The DAMC Red Line Challenge, held on the 7th at Dubai Autodrome, and described as one of the series’ most thrilling, kicked off the opening salvo with its drumbeating prelude to the next round happening on Dec. 12 also at the autodrome. This was followed simultaneously on the 14th and 15th by the Barbican Turbo Festival, which showcased some of the finest custom and tuning specialists from around the region, and world drifting champions from Japan at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre; and the Dubai Motorsport Fest, a motor shindig held also at the autodrome but with a twist that would have made the ancient Romans watching chariot racing look nothing more than a bunch of mollycoddled milksops muttering at the sidelines. The 9th Sharjah International Automobile Show, which brought together about a hundred cars, from the vintage to the state-of-the-art, and held from the 18th to the 22nd at Expo Centre Sharjah, ended the brief lull. Putting a touch of class on the string of events was the Bonhams’ Collectors’ Motor Car Introduction held on the 20th at the One & Only Royal Mirage Hotel, where a 1931 Lincoln Model K Rumble-Seat Roadster, a 1955 Ford Thunderbird Convertible, a 1965 Bentley S3 Saloon and a 1972 Ferrari 246GT Dino Coupe went on display. The next day saw Round 3 of the DAMC & RMC Karting Championship at the Kartdrome, another action-packed event. Capping the month’s motor fever was the Dubai International Rally—the final round of the 2008 FIA Middle East Rally Championship, which took place on the 28th and 29th and which saw action by top racers from across the region. If any, the events, and the huge turnout they had generated, point to just how vibrant UAE’s motorsport scene is such that it has now well become a national past time this part of the world. In this edition, meanwhile, Car Xpress takes you to a joyride with the Eos coupeconvertible—a cabriolet from Volkswagen; and the Dodge ZEO concept vehicle—a fourpassenger, all-electric, “2+2” sports wagon that embraces the bold, emotional characteristic of the Dodge brand. Also featured are Maserati’s Quattroporte S—a large luxury saloon with unrivalled driving dynamics; Renault’s Mégane Coupé—an eye-catching, head-turner; the special series Ferrari Scuderia Spider 16M, which can take off from 0 to 100kph in 3.7 seconds; and the Infiniti EX35 with its sculpted elegance and timeless appeal. Read on, and tell mama you want one of these…now!

Perfect for the beach

Surfing may be the last activity anyone feels like doing now, but with half-term upon us, it is the perfect time to hit the beach. The wetsuit will keep you warm, beaches will be empty, and the kids will get some fresh air. In fact for Sarah Whiteley it’s the perfect time of year for the coast as she runs Walking on Waves surf school at Saunton Beach, North Devon. This season is ideal for teaching people to surf, she says. “Not only are the beaches quiet but so is the sea, meaning you don’t have to worry about bumping into swimmers, body-boarders or other surfers.”

12 December 2008 Car Xpress

Sarah started competing at 16, eventually winning the English nationals at Woolacombe Beach and is also a former European Champion. Sarah has just taken delivery of a Hyundai i800 eight-seat MPV. Not only is it a perfect choice for her for the amount of wetsuits, boards and kit she has to transport, she also uses it as a meeting point because it stands out amongst much older camper vans frequently seen in beach car parks. The i800 has a whopping 851 litres of space even when loaded with eight adults, that’s more than most estate cars and leaving

plenty of space for kit. You could even get a surf-board in the back rather than on roofrails if you don’t have passengers. Commenting on her new i800 Sarah said; “An archetypal surfer’s vehicle is a VW camper, but the last thing I wanted to do is get into an unrefined, unreliable vehicle after an exhausting day on the waves. Knowing I can get my students and all my kit in the vehicle is really reassuring and the five-year warranty gives me added peace of mind and it certainly attracts attention in the beach car park.”

14 December 2008 Car Xpress

A new Peugeot 107 will be introduced next year featuring a stylish new face, better fuel economy, lower CO2 emissions and enhanced equipment with upgraded interior. Changes to the 107’s exterior include chrome detailing and a new wheel trim design to bring a more youthful appearance to this popular car. The interior has also been upgraded and includes new upholstery materials which complement new exterior colours in the range. CO2 emissions are also reduced to just 106g/km (previously 109g/km) retaining the low £35 road tax ‘B’ banding. The new 107 will be in Peugeot showrooms in early 2009 with full specification details and pricing issued in due course.

SPECIAL EDITION JEEP PATRIOT UNVEILED

Best-selling Caterham is back!

Adding a touch of class and luxury to a car that has already won numerous accolades the Jeep Patriot S-Limited is the latest offering from the Jeep brand. Available with a 2.4-litre petrol engine, this special edition model boasts a series of exterior and interior improvements, including chrome grille surrounds, body coloured door handles and mirrors, rear parking sensor plus a special S-Limited badge and front and rear under-ride body-kit, all of which ensure it is a worthy addition to the Jeep Patriot range. Federico Goretti, managing director of

Chrysler UK, said: “The fuel-efficient Patriot has always appealed to customers that want a vehicle with Jeep’s legendary brand cachet and desirability, but who also demand comfort, practicality, value for money and high levels of safety equipment. “The S-Limited is no exception and with its distinctive black paint and chrome styling it is one premium model that’s destined to stand out from the crowd.” Interior improvements were achieved by the use of leather trimmed seats and leather and Alcantara® door panels, plus a leather covered

centre armrest, gearstick and headrests. Outside, the S-Limited badge in red and silver finish make this special edition instantly recognisable whilst the Startech chrome grille highlights the vehicle’s unique character. While the exclusive design cues make the model an attractive proposition, it is further enhanced by a long list of standard equipment including electric windows, CD/radio, sidecurtain airbags, anti-lock brakes and ESP® with Electronic Roll Mitigation. The Jeep Patriot S-Limited is limited to 100 vehicles in the UK.

The new seven-seat Dodge Journey offers value for money in more ways than one. As well as undercutting rivals on price, and offering bags of family-friendly kit as standard, experts from EurotaxGlass’s predict that the Journey will be worth an impressive 41 per cent of its purchase price in three years time. EurotaxGlass’s – publisher of Glass’s Guide – has predicted strong residual values for the new Dodge Journey compared to its competitors. The company’s Market Intelligence Unit (EGMIU) predicts that the Dodge Journey 2.0CRD SXT is likely to retain 41 per cent of its original price over a three-year and 60,000 mile period. Jason King, head of Market Intelligence at EurotaxGlass’s, said: “As the marque’s first MPV offering within the UK, the Journey is a unique addition to the current Dodge line-up and elevates the brand to a more mainstream positioning within the automotive market. “Dodge’s bold and signature SUV-styling – combined with the high levels of specification and functionality expected of an MPV – give added presence. Yet the vehicle is still easily identifiable as an MPV, combining both style and practicality.” He added: “Competitive list prices indicate that the Journey will be a serious rival for its key competitors.” The front-wheel drive Dodge Journey has 5+2 seating as standard across the range and features including a tilt and slide flexible seating system; spacious under-floor storage bins and underseat storage areas; rear doors that open to 90-degrees for easy access when installing child seats; a rear conversation mirror and climate control that operates in all three rows.

Success!

AUDI AG is celebrating its most succ essful motorsport season in its history. Almost 30 years after the German manufac turer enjoyed world dominance with its groundbreaking quattro four-wh eel-drive rally cars, pioneering Audi TDI fuel injection now reigns supreme as the World leading power in endurance racing. Britain’s Allan McNish helped Aud i achieve its eighth outright victory and its third consecutive diesel-powered win in the Le Mans 24 hour race (14-15 June) with the V12-engined Audi R10 TDI sportsprototype. Audi remains the only car manufac turer to have ever won the legendary twic e-aroundthe-clock French race with diesel power – a race run over a longer total dist ance than this year ’s entire 18-race Formula One World Championship, and at very similar average speeds, but completed in the cou rse of just 24 hours. Audi had already won the maratho n Le Mans 24 Hour race five times afte r its initial 1999 Le Mans début with the all-c onquering, petrol-powered Audi R8 – a sportsprototype

Unleashed

that claimed a staggering 63 outright race wins from 80 race s (2000-06). Adding to this year ’s TDI triumph s in endurance sportscar racing, Aud i successfully defended the German Touring Car Masters (DTM) title. Timo Scheider, winner of the DTM Race at Brands Hatch (31 Aug), retained the prestigious crown for Audi in the new Audi A4 DTM in its début year.

Flat underfloor fuel tank

The usual place for a car’s fuel tank is beneath the rear seats, but in the compact interior of the iQ this would make it impossible for Toyota to achieve its goal of a sub-three-metre long car with four seats. The solution was to create a flat fuel tank, positioned beneath the vehicle floor. This was no simple task, requiring a number of fundamental enginee ring challenges to be met. Traditionally a flat fuel tank has been considered too difficult to design, because of the variance in fuel level that would occur, for example when the vehicle is parked on a slope. Toyota persevered with its efforts to make the tank smaller and calculate the optimum location of its functioning parts. A horizontal fuel pump was successfully developed, and the fuel level indicators were positioned in the centre of the tank to ensure a consistently accu rate readout is given. The result is a flat fuel tank, just 120mm tall. Its size and shape mea n it can be located under the floor, which not only frees up more cabin space but also give s iQ a lower centre of gravity, contributing to its excellent 18 December 2008 Car Xpress

stability and fun-to-drive character. It also allow s the rear wheels to be placed 440mm further forward, with shock absorbers clev erly angled backwards to prevent any encroach ment on the rear seat space. The space in the rear of the cabin that would usually be take n up by the fuel tank makes room for two seats – the one behind the front passenger suit able for an adult, the other, behind the driv er, for a child or for extra luggage space. Ther e is extra concealed storage beneath the seat s, while the seats themselves can be indiv idually folded down to create more luggage room . The fuel tank has a 32-litre capacity, enough to give iQ a driving range of more than 430 miles.

The Lotus Sport 2-Eleven GT4 Supersport race car asserts itself at the pinnacle of the 2-Eleven range, combining race winning pedigree with unparalleled handling and balance. Building on the success of the 2-Eleven road and track variants, Lotus Sport has developed this GT4 Supersport race car to compete in the European SRO GT4 Supersports category. The Lotus Sport GT4 Supersport pushes the limits to the extreme: wearing a dramatic composite body, full rollcage and with increased power and a sequential gearbox it provides a race winning package. The GT4 Supersport offers an advanced aerodynamic package, with aggressive styling alluding to its searing performance and phenomenal racing potential. Lotus Sport has increased the power and torque available in the GT4 Supersport car to 270 PS and 247 Nm from the standard supercharged cars 255 PS and 242 Nm engine. The increases in power and torque have been gained through improved induction and exhaust systems, and with a high ratio supercharger drive system for increased levels of boost. To maximise the upgrades to the engine the engine management system has been remapped and optimised. Lotus Sport is offering a 6 speed sequential gearbox with a centrally mounted push/ pull lever and gear selector display. The gearbox is integrated with the engine management system to allow flat shifts up through the box and an “autoblip” rev matching system on downchange. This transmission offers lightning quick gear changes, shaving those all important tenths off each gear change. A plate type limited slip differential, employed to improve traction out of corners competes the setup. There will be an initial run limited to 10 cars with delivery dates in March ready for the ‘09 racing season. Some GT4 Supersport features can be retro-fitted to 2-Elevens that have already been purchased, offering increased versatility and allowing owners to upgrade their car as they hone their skills.

Phenomenal Nissan GT-R

Instructors from Silverstone International have entered the final stages of a PanEuropean driving programme to introduce the Nissan GT-R to more than 1,300 presold customers. The 19-date run at Germany’s Nurburgring follows the successful debut of the experience at the home of the British Grand Prix in August, where more than 500 owners got to grips with the super saloon car for the first time. Under the logistical arm of Silverstone International, the initial two stages of the ground-breaking “Best in Class” Nissan Academy allowed customers to experience the phenomenal performance of the GT-R as well as learn important advanced driving techniques. “Half of those who attended had been on other drive experiences, but 98 per cent of them were unanimous that the Academy was their best one yet,” explained Jonathan Tait, Sales & Marketing director, Silverstone International. Darren Cox, European Brand Promotion Manager for Nissan Europe, added: “This is not your average car and this is not your average driving experience. Nissan has set its sights high with this breakthrough customer focused launch; in partnership with Silverstone those ambitions are being delivered in spades.” Further sessions, including the opportunity to take a full race licence test, will be held during 2009. Nissan and Silverstone are working on an even bigger offering of driving experiences for Passionate Sports car drivers that will be rolled out in 2009. European deliveries of the GT-R supercar will start in April 2009. Currently the waiting list is 18 months in the UK.

Lamborghini delivers last of the Reventón Lamborghini had delivered the last of its 20, one million euro plus taxes, Reventón cars , to a British customer of the official Midlands dealer, Lamborghini Birmingham. “Our client was understandably delighted,” said Lamborghini Birmingham sales manager Dominic Mulvey. “Lamborghini’s president and CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, personally presented the Reventón to its new owner who then drove off in his new car.” The UK-bound V12 Reventón, number 20 of 20 with a minimum 650 hp and a top speed in excess of 211 mph , was the last of the Reventón cars, all of which were sold prior to its public reveal in September 2007. It is the only Reventón being delivered to the UK. The buyer, who wishes to remain nameless, was committed to driving his car rather than simply garaging it however, so the last Reventón may well be seen throughout the country at Lamborghini, motorsport and social events.

They say you can take the car away from a man, but you can never take a man away from the car. That’s just how it went at the first-ever Emirates International Boat Show held at the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club from Nov. 25th to the 29th , where a floating, crackerjack 2009 silver, two-door Maserati Gran Turismo probably got more ooohs and aaaahs from the crowd than the yachts, powerboats, and catamarans on display. Maserati, which has over the years, developed a household name for world-class Italian luxury cars, was among sponsors of

the event, and had three Pininfarinas—the Gran Turismo’s confreres, also on display. Not really appearing to be cocky or snobbish at all, the Gran Turismo, seemed to enjoy the attention as it, well, actually coquettishly, sat on a barge docked at the marina for boat enthusiasts, who arguably were mostly car lovers themselves, too, to admire. Indeed, for some moments every now and then, the Gran Turismo would look like a rock star yelling, “See mama, they couldn’t get enough of me!” At times, it would just appear like idling itself, engaging in dolce far niente as the crowd awed themselves, delighting at

this wonderful work of art. Organizers said the boat show attracted over 150 exhibitors and drew thousands of people who came to check the latest in recreational marine gadgetry and state-ofthe-art sporting and luxury sea craft. Among the boats on display were the 39-ft, 700hp supercharged twin-engined, Topgun Unlimited of the world champion Cigarette Racing Team, an American off-shore legend; the 34-ft “Favourite-34” by Flagship, which is powered by two 300hp Mercruiser 350 MAG MPI engines, and could skid on the water at 50 knots an hour (70kph); and Liquid Glass

Powerboats’ 41-ft Luxury Cat, with its twin Mercury Marine gasoline engines which have a total horsepower of 1,300 to 2,400 that runs the vessel to speeds in excess of 190kph. Likewise on show was the Boat Eagle ‘38 by Eliminator, which is powered by an eightcylinder twin engine Mercruiser that has a total horsepower of 850. Of course, what’s a boat show without the yachts for the big boys? Also on display were the “Rolls Royces of the Sea” by the Rodriguez Group, world leader in luxury yachts, which takes pride in the Mangusta and Leopard—the most

prestigious yachts in the world; the Nidelv 28, which offers the luxury of home at the sea; and Aquaspeed’s three-storey, 40-ft American Meridian, with its two 375hp Volva Penta engines. Other exhibitors include Delma Marine Abu Dhabi, distributor of SeaRay boats, Gulf Craft fiberglass boats, Mercury Outboard engines, Mariner Outboard engines, and scuba equipments, among others; Al Masaood Company; R.J. Performance Marine, distributor of American-made Tige boats, and Ronix wakeboards; Leisure Marine Middle East, a Dubai-based company that

represents several quality boat brands across GCC, with its leading division being Princess Yachts Middle East; Al Fardan Marine, which has been “making waves… introducing all things aqua.”; and Western Marine, distributor of five premium yachts— Aicon, Marquis, Carver, Jeanneau and Windy. The event was organized by Knotika Holding, whose CEO, Wael Juju, said: “Abu Dhabi is the perfect venue for an event that epitomizes luxurious lifestyle. The success of this event has positioned Abu Dhabi on the world map as the master town for marine business.”

Battery Electric Vehicle in expressive “2+2” Dodge sports car style

28 December 2008 Car Xpress

Car Xpress December 2008 29

The 2008 Dodge ZEO -- Zero Emissions Operation – concept vehicle is a fourpassenger, all-electric, “2+2” sport wagon that embraces the bold, emotional characteristic of the Dodge brand. With its 23-inch wheels-to-the corners, heroic proportions and muscular forms, the ZEO exhibits a new youthful breed of musclemachine interface. Dodge owners and those who will desire the ZEO concept are unquestionably driving enthusiasts. They are less family-oriented, with a desire for things that are high-tech, and place less emphasis on pure practicality. While they boast environmental and overall responsibility, they also exhibit a “need for speed.” “The Dodge ZEO concept is designed to break the paradigm of what an electric car should look like,” said Bill Zheng, Dodge ZEO principal exterior designer. “An electric car can be as expressive as any gasolinepowered vehicle. The Dodge ZEO concept proves that point – and then some.” To this end, the ZEO’s body has been given an active, three-dimensional form, with the fenders boldly offset to the body.

Technology The advanced propulsion system powering the Dodge ZEO concept is electric-only with a 64 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack capable of at least 250 miles. Resting in a rear-wheel drive layout, Dodge ZEO’s 200 kilowatt (268 horsepower) single-electric motor contributes to a 0-60 mph time in less than six seconds -- which rivals Chrysler’s famed HEMI powerplant. Unlike other such vehicles, ZEO is a four-door, four-passenger vehicle that delivers function as well as environmental responsibility.

Exterior Nestled between the robust circular wheel arches, ZEO’s taut, elongated beltline ends with the signature Dodge kick-up at the rear, where the reverse-angle C-pillar is planted directly over the rear wheel arch. Inspired in part by the architecture of a Möbius strip, Dodge ZEO’s rakish A-pillars curve into extended roof rails that twist and converge as they race rearward. The windshield glass continues in an unbroken, curving plane nearly to the rear of the car, giving both front and rear passengers an unimpeded, all-around view while showcasing ZEO’s inventive interior. 30 December 2008 Car Xpress

Other expressive details include “scissor” doors, front and rear lamps treated as separate sculptural forms, and the “ZEO Orange” and dark silver exterior.

Interior Inspired by organic forms and wireless technology, Dodge ZEO’s interior is loaded with attitude and intelligence expected by youthful buyers. “The Dodge ZEO concept is an example of designing for people who are used to a dynamic lifestyle and who are surrounded with information and virtual friends at all times,” says Lou Gasevski, principal interior designer of the Dodge ZEO concept. The entire cabin is treated as if it were a single piece of sculpture. A broad sloping fabric-wrapped surface in front of the driver curves dramatically into the door and quarter panel. It then sweeps around the back panel to the opposite side quarter and door, ending in a sloping surface in front of the passenger. This design approach blends the usually separate-looking parts of the interior into a unified whole. A narrow strip of blue LED accent lighting on the doors and quarters lead to the back panel, adding to the sweeping effect. Most of the interior surfaces of the ZEO concept are coloured in Super White, adding to the sculptural impression. A slim centre console slopes down from the windshield of the Dodge ZEO, creating a dual-cockpit effect. It then levels off to divide the cabin by continuing clear to the back panel. To avoid visual clutter, customary controls and a viewing screen are set flush with the surface. Instead of a conventional instrument panel, the steering wheel, column and instruments are treated as a single freestanding design element. The Dodge ZEO concept’s steering wheel has two vertical spokes, set closely together, leaving 80 percent of the rim “open” for maximum visibility. The laid-back centre hub, containing the driver air bag and auxiliary switches, is stationary, with the wheel rim revolving around it. Left and right horizontal paddle-levers just behind the wheel rim activate the remote radio functions. The sloping plane of the centre hub, which cantilevers forward above the steering column, houses the instruments which are displayed on a thin blue acrylic viewing screen set directly in front of the driver.

The Dodge ZEO concept is designed to break the paradigm of what an electric car should look like

Car Xpress December 2008 31

The entire elegant multi-piece ensemble adjusts with the wheel rim to the driver’s needs. Doors and quarters are bisected by a flaring, wide-to-narrow dark grey panel separating the upper and lower surfaces – with the lower portion of the door and quarter curving inboard to provide an armrest surface. Milled aluminium door pull handles, placed diagonally, act as accents. Contrasting coloured Copperhead stitching follows the forms of the ZEO’s Super White leather seats. For maximum comfort, the four bucket seats sport highlycontoured bolsters on the seat cushions and backs. When in the down position, the slim sculpted headrests nestle neatly into the tops of the upper seatbacks. The seat shells are constructed from milled aluminium, with video screens integrated into the front seatbacks. With its bold exterior and curving, sculptural interior, the ZEO concept appeals to Dodge brand customers who want value, expressive design and useful technology.

Volkswagen creates new appeal with dual segment coupe-cabriolet

40 December 2008 Car Xpress

Car Xpress December 2008 41

Eos is derived from the goddess of sunrise and is meant to evoke associations with an idealised image of driving a convertible: the early moments of a sunny day.

Now that the cool breezy months are beckoning, the attractive Volkswagen Eos coupe-convertible is the ideal choice to cruise around the city. The sporty and contemporary design of the Eos, its convertible characteristics as well as its dynamic road handling makes it a fun driving experience for those seeking a real alternative. Its visual image is as significant as its body elements, primarily with its unique five piece folding steel roof that transforms the Eos effortlessly from sporty coupe to elegant convertible in just 25 seconds. As a world first, the Eos comes with a stunning hardtop dual technology design, boasting a full-width integral glass sunroof, which slides and tilts, making it the perfect choice for the Middle East’s climatic extremes. Rain or shine, the glass sliding roof captures light, air and a good mood all year round. The CSC roof also made it possible to design a very low profile windshield frame. This produces a harmonious design and a panoramic view above the driver and front passenger. The Eos is one of the most successful convertibles in the world. Its generous and luxurious standard specifications include ESP, a convertible-specific Climatronic airconditioning system, electric windows, alloy wheels, a leather-lined steering wheel, multifunction display, central locking, lockable glove compartment with cooling facility, optimised-safety front head restraints, front and side airbags, especially developed head-thorax airbags, and a roll over protection system that deploys in a maximum of 0.25 seconds. The name itself stands for emotion. Eos is derived from the goddess of sunrise and is meant to evoke associations with an idealised image of driving a convertible: the early moments of a sunny day. One thing is for sure: The Eos is an uncompromising convertible for these cool months ahead and an equally suitable coupe for the hot summer temperatures.

Fashionista It’s also worth knowing that Volkswagen will be displaying the Eos at the Middle East 42 December 2008 Car Xpress

International Motor Show. After more than one million Volkswagen convertibles of the Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Golf and New Beetle series, the region’s leading fashionistas can now embrace the hottest new coupeconvertible from Europe’s streets. Following a hugely successful launch phase in Europe, the Eos plays and wins in both coupe and convertible segments on the region’s roads offering the best of both worlds. Sporty, powerful, and unique, the new Eos is a breakthrough in the automobile industry, designed for alternative young individuals looking for a real adventure. This comes as refreshing news to the Middle East as it has undergone a significant change in recent years, with a growth in the numbers of urban professionals in the major cities. Fully loaded, highly specced and boasting a unique five-piece folding-roof technology, the Middle East is now privy to Europe’s fastest moving urban style icon. The Eos is available in the region in two petrol engine versions: 147 kW/200 hp and 184 kW/250 hp. Fully loaded and highly specced, the four-seater sports convertible boasts Teutonic muscles that propels the coupe way ahead of the crowd, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.3 seconds in V6 form. With a top speed of 247km/h and a dual-clutch gearbox distributing drive power to the front wheels via six forward gears, the Eos is a unique demonstration of the hallmarks of classic German innovation and engineering.

World First CSC-Design As a world first, the four-seater Eos is equipped with a stunning hardtop dual technology design, boasting an integrated sliding/tilting glass roof as standard making it the perfect choice for this region’s climatic extremes. Moving from coupe to convertible has been made effortlessly simple through the integrated electro-hydraulics system giving the Eos the sleekest of maneuvers in just 25 seconds. The CSC-roof (convertible, sliding and coupe roof) of the Eos is made of steel and glass components; never before has a hard top technology of such complexity and reliability been put into practice. The Eos roof offers not only visual, but

Car Xpress December 2008 43

also practical advantages. Firstly, a pure convertible feeling. Unlike other convertibles, the front section of the Eos’ roof is held in a transparent glass look and can be used as a panorama sun roof opening it either completely or tilting it upwards by 35 millimetres. Even in the closed mode the roof creates a bright, friendly and fresh atmosphere in the interior. Secondly, the shorter windscreen frame makes it easier to get into the Eos when the roof is open as the driver or passengers do not have to maneuver their heads past the frame. Thirdly, the large sliding/tilting glass roof captures light, air, and a good mood regardless of whether or not there is sun. In addition, the CSC-roof offers the advantages of suitability throughout the year as well as low noise levels even at higher driving speeds and with the roof closed.

Very Wide and Powerful When it comes to appearance, the Eos is wide and powerful, a piece of art. The coupe-convertible is 1.79 metres wide, 4.41 metres long and 1.44 metres high. In their relationship to each other these dimensions affect the dynamics of the Eos: due to the relatively broad width in comparison with the length and height, the Eos sits powerfully on its wheels. The considerable track width (more than 1.55 metres) doesn’t just look good; it rather adds to the agility and road handling. The result is a fun driving experience, whether the top is up or down. Sporty-Elegant and Spacious Interior The interior of the Eos has a new and sporty-elegant design, spaciously equipped to comfortably seat 4 adults. While the details for function and use (e.g. lights, air conditioning; radio systems) are familiar from other models, many of the Eos elements have been newly developed. These include the cockpit, door and side cover as well as the rear seats and an air conditioning automatic specifically designed for a convertible. For the first time Volkswagen optionally features electrically activated easy-entry-seats: they ‘remember’ the driver’s and front passenger’s longitudinal seating position and return to it – just by pushing a button - after the rear passengers have gotten in or out. Three Engines with a Performance Spectrum from 150 HP to 250 HP The Eos is available in the Middle East with three strong engines ranging from economic

44 December 2008 Car Xpress

150 HP (2.0 litre) to a powerful 250 HP (3.2 litre). As one of very few manufacturers, Volkswagen features economic direct fuel injection in all four cylinder gas engines. The particularly agile and high torque turbo charged 200 HP (2.0 litre) engine has already advanced to become a kind of a cult engine in the Golf GTI. Another masterpiece is the 250 HP strong six cylinder engine which made its debut in the Golf R32. This engine gives the Eos a Teutonic muscle that propels the coupe-convertible way ahead of the crowd, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.3 seconds. With a top speed of 247 km/h, and a dual-clutch transmission (DSG) distributing drive power to the front wheels via six forward gears, the Eos is a unique demonstration of the hallmarks of classic German innovation and engineering.

Comprehensive Equipment Sporting 17 alloy wheels for the V6 model, a convertible-specific Climatronic system, on-board navigation, cornering headlights, the Eos also comes with a Dynaudio 600watt, 10 speaker stereo, with enough volume for a small party.

Safety equipment The Eos is equipped with a whole range of systems that ensure passive safety; these include a roll bar system which shoots up after 0.25 seconds after the transverse acceleration or if the vehicle incline in the back head rest area exceeds a fixed mark. Also as standard, the Eos has safety optimised head rests and four airbags on board. Parallel with the front airbags, Volkswagen equipped this convertible with special lateral airbags –so-called headthorax airbags. During a collision they open horizontally and vertically and cover the entire lateral window band. From a conceptual approach, this way they also perform the tasks of conventional head or window airbags, which could obviously not be stored in an open roof. Since its launch, the Eos topped the German convertible market and was more than 100% ahead of its nearest competitor, marking it as one of the sharpest movers in its class. Volkswagen is continuing to invest in design and innovation and the Eos is a clear demonstration of this with the inclusion of the world first integrated sliding/tilting, five piece roof hardtop.

The Infiniti EX35 is expected to make a big impact in the fast-growing small crossover segment, bringing all the panache of a coupe but adding substantially more room. While more stylish and more distinctive than a conventional sedan, the EX35 retains a unique character that sets it apart from the bulk of a standard cross-over or an SUV. “It’s a ‘right size’ vehicle that’s easy to maneuver and park,” Abhijeet Pandit, Infiniti Middle East brand manager says. Topping the impressive list of technology systems is the world production car debut of Infiniti’s advanced around view monitor (AVM) system; a new technology from Infiniti first adopted on EX35 in the region and will be adopted on future models. This technology uses four small cameras to give the driver a top-down view of the outside

52 December 2008 Car Xpress

of the vehicle while parking. The EX35’s sculpted elegance expresses a timeless appeal – sleek lines that portray speed, grace and finesse. Its layout combines the look and feel of a luxury coupe and an SUV’s flexibility. Its sporty proportions include a long hood, short front and rear overhangs, rearward cabin and smooth coupe-like roofline arching over the windows to the C-pillars. The exterior of Infiniti EX35 includes many signature Infiniti touches, including a double-arch grille, large L-shaped headlights with Xenon head lamps, integrated fog lights, distinctive LED taillights and “dynamic arch” profile. Like all Infiniti vehicles, the EX35 was conceived to offer a reinvigorating and engaging interior environment, one that is

both indulgent and inspiring. The driver-focused wave-inspired cabin layout features an Infiniti signature “doublewave” instrument panel, easy-to-read high-contrast gauges with white-and-violet illumination and hospitality lighting with a pin LED light mounted over the center console and Infiniti-signature analog clock. The instrument panel also features a seven-inch colour display with Infiniti controller for the trip computer and additional vehicle information, including the Infiniti DVD navigation system. Other technology systems include available Bluetooth hands-free phone system, and standard Infiniti intelligent key with push button ignition, and customdesigned Bose audio with MP3. The interior is offered with leather-

appointed seating surfaces, eight-way power driver’s seat, with two-way manual lumbar support and a four-way power passenger’s seat. Under the EX35’s dramatic body is an equally advanced platform and powertrain based on the latest Infiniti performance technology. Infiniti EX35 2008 is equipped with a fourth-generation 3.5-litre V6 engine rated at 314 horsepower (gross) and electronically controlled with five-speed automatic transmission with adaptive shift control and manual shift mode which offers sequentially selected manual gear shift and downshift rev matching. The fourth-generation VQ engine features a long list of advanced systems found on the previous design – including a continuously variable valve timing control system

(CVTCS). EX35 uses a subframe-mounted independent front double-wishbone suspension with aluminum-alloy upper and lower links, high-performance dual-flow pass shock absorbers and stabilizer bar. Steering is provided by a vehicle speedsensitive power-assisted steering system with power-assisted front and rear discs (vented front) and standard anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist. Available wheel comes in 17-inch 7-spoke aluminum-alloy. EX35 also features the Infiniti Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) with dual stage supplemental front air bags with seatbelt and occupant classification sensors, driver and front passenger side-impact

supplemental air bags, roof-mounted curtain side-impact and rollover supplemental air bags for front and rear seat outboard occupant head protection. Infiniti’s coupe-inspired EX35 crossover will make its Middle East debut at the Dubai motor show and will reach the region’s showrooms in March 2008. “This new Infiniti EX35 is a breathtaking design and a breath of fresh air in the segment, with its sculpted elegance, engaging interior and exciting performance,” says Pandit. “It has a very tight turning radius but without sacrificing interior space. Although the EX35 is slightly smaller than the Infiniti FX, it’s by no means a mini version. There’s still plenty of room inside, with the emphasis on luxury and technology.”

The EX35 retains a unique character that sets it apart from the bulk of a standard cross-over or an SUV.

A large luxury saloon; unrivalled driving dynamics.

56 December 2008 Car Xpress

Not just the outcome of style for style’s sake.

Since its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003, the Maserati Quattroporte has been unique on the automotive market thanks to its character of sport luxury saloon, combined with a distinctive Italian soul. It speaks for the traditional Maserati values and provides continuity with the great saloons bearing the same name that have achieved success in the past, from the first Quattroporte with Frua body in 1964, to the “presidential” Quattroporte in 1984, of which the Italian President Sandro Pertini was particularly fond of. After five years of success, with more than 15,000 cars sold and 46 awards won internationally, the new Quattroporte range reinforces the model’s exclusive image with a thorough technical and stylistic upgrade, while performance reaches new peaks with the powerful new 4.7 litre, 317 kW (430 CV) engine. The Pininfarina design, one of the main factors underlying the Quattroporte’s success, reworks the basic theme of the Quattroporte by incorporating the stylistic features of the GranTurismo. All intended to stress the Quattroporte’s character as a luxury limousine with unbeatable dynamic qualities. There are two versions available, reflecting the car’s dual soul: Quattroporte, powered by the 4.2 litre 8 cylinder engine Quattroporte S, equipped with the 4.7 litre 8 cylinder engine with higher power output and torque, the pinnacle of the Quattroporte range.

PININFARINA STYLE A strengthened stylistic identity, to turn even more heads on the road. Beauty of form is the most immediately noticeable aspect of the work carried out by Pininfarina on the design of the new Quattroporte. However, the profound renewal of the car’s image is not just the outcome of style for style’s sake, but rather expresses an approach to changing technical and functional requirements: the larger cooling area, for example, was a necessary requirement of the increased engine size. Technological features, such as the

58 December 2008 Car Xpress

introduction of LEDs for the lighting units, as well as aerodynamic ones, which optimise the air flows in the lower part of the vehicle, have also contributed to the final result. The new Quattroporte looks as if it is gripping the road with even greater determination, with a fresh aggressiveness at the front, due to its increased similarity to the GranTurismo. This effect derives above all from the new radiator grille with vertical fins, and from the larger-sized headlights, with an L-shaped band of LEDs, contributing to the car’s “tougher look”. The side has also been transformed with a more noticeable underdoor moulding, while the rear-view mirrors merge more smoothly into the design of the car’s body. To match the front, the rear has also been reinforced with a more striking approach. The stylistic link to the GranTurismo is clearly reflected in the red outline of the headlights, with a white central part. This is a strong signal of the new Quattroporte’s identity by night, when the rear parking light lights up to form a pair of slanted bars.

Interior Sophisticated, cosy and comfortable, the new Quattroporte interior owes its exclusive taste to unmistakably Italian style lines and meticulously crafted details. The dashboard retains its strong character provided by the supporting centre console, finished in luxury materials. All the harmony of the car’s shape now becomes apparent; the airbag housing in front of the passenger is perfectly integrated into the dashboard. The centre console has been restyled to bring the controls closer together. This considerably improves the ergonomics of the driving position, also enhanced by snugger seats, a sportier grip for the steering wheel and an easily reachable storage compartment located in the central console. Engineering The dual soul as luxury saloon with sportscar performance of the new Quattroporte range finds its ultimate expression on board the Quattroporte S, equipped with the outstanding 4.7 litre V8 delivering a maximum power output of 317 kW (430 CV) at 7,000 rpm, and a maximum torque of 490 Nm at 4,750 rpm. Easily identifiable thanks to its red cylinder

head covers, it is the top of the range of a new family of wet sump engines developed by Maserati engineers to ensure smooth ride and unbeatable performance. The technical features incorporated in this unit, with speeds rising to 7,200 rpm, have further upgraded the impressive qualities of the latest Maserati engines, i.e. the high specific power output and the capacity for rapid rise and fall in rpm, for an even more thrilling driving experience. Fully responsive in all driving conditions, the 4.7 litre V8 reveals astonishing acceleration even in high gears, particularly useful during motorway journeys. This plus-factor is achieved through the skilful harmonisation of the shapes of the intake and exhaust ducts, combined with the use of continuousactuation timing advance processors on the intake camshafts, optimisation of the combustion chamber and the way the engine itself is calibrated to deliver 82% of torque at just 2,500 rpm. Exhaust/evap emissions and fuel consumption fully comply with the planned Euro 5 regulations for European and LEV2 for the US, thanks to the introduction of an innovative perforated metal sheet

Car Xpress December 2008 59

catalytic converter that combines permeability and reliability.

Stability The Quattroporte’s dynamic handling is further enhanced by the MSP, Maserati Stability Program, specially developed by Maserati to ensure safety and driving pleasure. The system communicates with the ABS, EBD (electronic brake force distribution) and ASR (anti-slip regulation during acceleration) functions and acts on the brakes and engine to help the driver maintain full control of the car, even in the most critical situations.

Safety The new Quattroporte’s safety system has been tested with hundreds of simulations, thus guaranteeing the high level of passenger protection required by the strictest European and US standards (FMVSS, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard). The front airbags (driver and passenger) are dual-stage, with inflation always directly related to the intensity of the impact. The new passenger air bag system, equipped with Low Risk Deployment feature, guarantees maximal security in all cases of frontal impact. Thanks to a combination of different elements, the air bag can conveniently adapt to all situations: additional holes allow reduction of pressure when the air bag impacts against an obstacle near the dashboard; the low concave part has been conceived to protect children in their babyseats; finally the two lateral sections support the shoulders, thus reducing pressure on the head and thorax of adult passengers. In case of lateral impact, the side-bags integrated in the front seats and the window-bags inflate to protect the head and upper-body of the front and rear passengers. Their action is synergic with that of the safety belts, equipped with pre-tensioners and load limiters, to retain the occupants even in case of a particularly violent deceleration.

Renault’s Mégane Coupé

Car Xpress December 2008 65

The Mégane Coupé concept unveiled at the Geneva show in the spring of 2008 paved the way for the release of a new C-segment model line-up with real character. The Coupé immediately caught the eye thanks to its styling which took its inspiration from the passion associated with the automobile, and cues from the world of sport. Continuing the impressive list of standard equipment on the five-door Hatch, the new Mégane Coupé has been designed to offer all of the comfort and practicality features to make everyday usage as enjoyable and stress-free as possible. In addition to the car’s five proper seats, sports chassis with firmer suspension and a 12mm lower ride height compared with the

Hatch, the Mégane Coupé generous core features include air conditioning, six airbags, electric heated body coloured door mirrors, front electric windows and emergency spare wheel. As the sportier model in the new Mégane range, the Coupé does without the 1.6 100 engine seen on the five-door, but gains Renault’s first CVT (Continuous Variable Transmission) with the 2.0 140 petrol engine. Proving that stylish and sport-oriented cars can still be respectful of the environment, all five diesel versions of the Mégane Coupé fulfill Renault’s eco² criteria. Six-speed manual gearboxes are standard across the range with the exception of the 1.5 dCi 86 which is five-speed, and naturally the Continuous Variable Transmission.

It also inherits a raft of equipment normally associated with higher segments, including parking brake assist, hands-free entry and ignition, automatic door locking as the driver walks away from the car and a Carminat Bluetooth® DVD navigation system, plus – for the first time – a custom-developed 3D Sound by Arkamys® Bluetooth® audio system. The interior, meanwhile, features a driving environment based on fluid, uncluttered forms. The impression that the dashboard is suspended is reinforced by the taut horizontal lines that emphasize the curve of the decorative trim. All the controls have been carefully positioned and fall easily to hand – either close to the steering wheel or on the centre console – with a view to freeing up as much space as possible for an even roomier cabin. Great care has also gone into the quality and fit-and-finish of the materials employed, at all equipment levels. The dashboard benefits from a finish which is not only soft

The design of the New Mégane family stems from a bid to produce a range of immediately eye-catching cars that take their inspiration from the world of sport and a passion for cars. The new Mégane Coupé places the emphasis on providing safe motoring pleasure and performance for discerning enthusiasts who are looking for enjoyment to match the newcomer’s looks, but who also want a car they can drive on a day to day basis. In addition to the robustness promised by its styling, the Mégane Coupé features a high standard of body panel fit-and-finish, and only quality materials have been chosen for production. The interior trim has been carefully thought through to produce a range of distinct ambiences depending on equipment level. Customers can accordingly choose between a relaxing, light, elegant trim that exudes traveling comfort or a darker ambience with a sportier feel. For optimal thermal comfort, the Mégane Coupé is equipped with climate control as standard, while an automatic dual-zone system – first seen on New Laguna – is available for certain versions.

This system enables the driver and front passenger to choose the temperature they prefer independently. It also permits them to select the fan speed, thanks to the ‘Soft-Auto-Fast’ function. In ‘Auto’ mode, the system automatically optimizes the temperature, sound level and start-up speed. The ‘Soft’ mode favours a quieter ambience, notably for the driver and front passenger, while the ‘Fast’ mode responds swiftly and efficiently to adjust the temperature of the entire cabin.

Environment-friendly In today’s context of reducing CO2 emissions and continuing pressure on fuel prices, the New Renault Mégane range features a broad choice of significantly renewed petrol and diesel powerplants which combine performance and respect for the environment. The dCi 85 and the dCi 105, which are acclaimed for the performance and driving pleasure they deliver, have been joined by Car Xpress December 2008 67

the dCi 90 DPF and dCi 110 DPF which deliver CO2 emissions of just 118 and 120g/km respectively. The range also includes the new dCi 130 DPF (135g of CO2/km) and will shortly be expanded to include the powerful dCi 150 and dCi 160 engines. Depending on market, the Mégane Coupé can also be ordered with a choice of petrol engines, namely the familiar 1.6 16V and 2.0 16V units, which are renowned for their flexibility, and the new TCe 130 and TCe 180 engines (TCe = Turbo Control efficiency). These two turbocharged engines, which stem from Renault’s expertise in the realm of downsizing, are both economical—with particularly competitive running and maintenance costs—and responsive from very low engine speeds, with power delivered smoothly and effortlessly all the way up the rev range. Moreover, the vehicles that make up the socially responsible New

Renault Mégane range are 95% end-of-life recoverable by weight, while almost 12% of the plastic they employ (an average 22kg) is sourced from recycling.

Safety The Renault Mégane is equipped with the same dual side-impact sensors and dualchamber thorax/pelvis airbags first seen on Laguna III. The package is aimed at minimizing the consequences of side-on impacts. The Mégane Coupé highlights a long list of features aimed at helping drivers anticipate risk situations. This equipment includes a tyre pressure monitoring system, automatic headlamp and windscreen wiper activation and a cruise control/speed limiter. Also available are biXenon headlamps incorporating dipped beam cornering lights which facilitate night-time driving by enhancing lateral visibility.

Standard active safety features include ABS, EBD and Emergency Brake Assist. Depending on version, ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and CSV understeer control are also available to assist the driver in difficult or emergency situations. On the passive safety front, the programmed deformation of the structure of the Mégane Coupé has been engineered to absorb impact energy with a view to protecting the cabin and therefore occupants. The materials employed – including high, very high and very, very high elastic limit steels – have been selected to absorb and dissipate as much kinetic energy as possible. Controlled deformation ensures that occupants are subjected to lower deceleration forces and this, coupled with the third-generation Renault System for Restraint and Protection (SRP3), guarantees an extremely high level of protection.

The Renault System for Restraint and Protection is unique on the market and takes into account both impact force and the build of occupants. It comprises double pretensioners (which tighten the seatbelt against thorax and pelvis to restrict forward movement of the body), load limiters (which reduce the pressure applied by the belt to the thorax) and dual-volume adaptive airbags (which deploy by just the right amount to absorb impact energy). The package also optimizes protection against the phenomenon known as submarining whereby the pelvis has a tendency to slide beneath the seatbelt’s lap strap and which can produce serious abdominal lesions in a collision. In the case of New Mégane Coupé, this takes the form of an anti-submarining airbag positioned in the front seat cushion.

Distinctive personality

The Mégane Coupé has its own distinctive personality and is immediately apparent through its racy front-end looks which feature crease lines that sweep down from the windscreen pillars and across the bonnet. Meanwhile, the streamlined forms of the headlamps extend the fluid contours of the air-intakes to reinforce the Mégane’s determined expression and piercing gaze. The strong character of Mégane Coupé is also apparent at the rear where the two-piece light clusters not only continue the feature line but also facilitate easy access to the boot. The Latin influence of Mégane Coupé’s elegantly sensual curves is especially visible when seen from the side. The proportions of its flanks are both harmonious and dynamic, and irresistibly suggest forward movement, as well as genuine personality and the promise of real driving enjoyment.

Digital The use of all-digital technology enabled Renault’s Design Department to work with the project engineers on New Renault Mégane’s design from a very early stage. This advanced technology enables films to be produced depicting vehicles in a purely virtual setting with less than three hours of calculations. This outstanding tool was developed entirely in-house and makes it possible to evaluate the lines of a new vehicle even before the first scale model was produced. It is an indispensable plus when it comes to taking styling-related decisions, and permitted sales and marketing specialists to contribute to the honing of the design of X95, the codename given to the New Mégane project. All-digital technology also serves to prepare the tooling that will later be employed to manufacture the vehicles.

It’s always good to celebrate a success, and Nissan has done just that with the introduction of the Qashqai Sound & Style. Marking a record-breaking run for the innovative crossover that has seen sales across Europe comfortably exceed 250,000 since its introduction last year, the new special edition provides even more in the way of creature comforts. Unashamedly luxurious, it’s based on the top-of-the-range Tekna model, so the specification already includes such items as dual zone climate control, full length panoramic glass roof, Intelligent Key and xenon headlamps. Sporting unique 18 -nch alloy wheels, Sound & Style also adds an exclusive Nightshade paint – a purple-black colour – that perfectly sets off the satin silver finish to the roof rails, door handles and front grille. For those who fancy something different, paint choice extends to Blade Silver, Pearl Black and Arctic White. Moving inside, the sophisticated upholstery is trimmed in Graphite half leather with red stitching, alloy pedals providing a finishing touch. Given the name it comes as little surprise to learn that the Qashqai Sound & Style has a pretty special sound system, too. As well as a standard six-disc CD autochanger, Nissan’s collaboration with audio specialists Bose has delivered a hi-fi designed specifically to suit the acoustic qualities of Qashqai. To ensure valuable cabin space remains uncompromised, Bose has developed a range of small, slim loudspeakers that use compact and lightweight neodymium iron boron magnets able to do 10 times the work of a similarly sized ferrite magnet without sacrificing acoustic performance. Two 1.5 inch tweeters, four 6.5 inch wide range speakers – one in each door – and a 5.25 inch woofer housed in a custom-built 7-litre enclosure mounted in the spare wheel deliver a sublime aural experience. Bose calls its woofer design Richbass and it lives up to the name thanks to its high degree of cone ‘excursion’ or movement which enables it to produce the lowfrequency output of a much larger, heavier speaker. The finishing touch is a multi-channel digital amplifier with custom equalisation and digital signal processing – in other words it can deliver a full and detailed sound that approaches live performance Car Xpress December 2008 73

levels without distortion. Otherwise Sound & Style offers all the key attributes of the standard Qashqai that have proved such a hit – its special brew of family hatchback, MPV and SUV, combined with immense practicality, a funto-drive attitude and an attractive design. Qashqai Sound & Style is available now with either 2.0-litre petrol or diesel power, six-speed manual transmission and twowheel drive, priced at £19,199 and £20,599 OTR respectively.

A considerable presence on the road Created to provide the ultimate Rexton with power, presence and versatility, the R-Line is a full-size 4x4 with outstanding off-road and towing capabilities, with the latest safety features and exceptional interior comfort. The customised version of the Rexton, shown on the SsangYong stand at this year’s British International Motor Show, is now an additional model in the SsangYong range. The SsangYong Rexton R-Line was so enthusiastically received by visitors to the SsangYong motor show stand, that distributors Koelliker UK, had no hesitation in adding it to the range. Differing only in detail from the show car, the Rexton R-Line is the work of celebrated designer Afzal Kahn, who has carved an international reputation for applying old-world craftsmanship and the finest materials to turn standard cars into bespoke works of art. Built at Project Kahn’s Bradford facility, the Rexton R-Line is based on the Rexton 270 SPR – an already well-equipped and imposing four-wheel drive SUV that offers outstanding value. But the R-Line takes this several stages further with added luxury and design flair.

Created to provide the ultimate Rexton with power, presence and versatility, the R-Line is a full-size 4x4 with outstanding off-road and towing capabilities, with the latest safety features and exceptional interior comfort. Immediately obvious are the Kahn Design 22 inch RST alloy wheels. These combine with lowered sports springs to completely transform the look of the car. Inside, a high quality black nappa leather and soft Alcantara interior with red stitching cossets the Rexton’s occupants. Seats, door panels and centre console have been specially upholstered to add a tactile quality to the driving experience. On the road, the R-Line has considerable presence with black paintwork combining with the lowered suspension and special 22 inch alloys. Performance and handling are improved with a Kahn Design sports exhaust and a lower centre of gravity from the sports suspension springs. Even in standard form, the Rexton 270 SPR has climate control, electronic stability programme (ESP) with active rollover protection (ARP), hill descent

control (HDC), ABS, parking sensors, cruise control, auto lights and wipers, side airbags, electric folding door mirrors and heated seats. Leather upholstery is standard, but the Kahn R-Line is further upgraded. The only thing the R-Line doesn’t have as standard is an audio system, simply because customers are likely to want to specify their own choice of premium sound system. The Rexton uses a more powerful version of the SsangYong 2.7 five cylinder turbo diesel engine producing 186 PS and a thundering 402 Nm torque at 2,400rpm. Transmission is a Mercedes T-Tronic automatic with gear lever and steering wheel shift buttons, and with permanent all-wheel drive. Suspension is independent all round. A rear spoiler and Kenwood touch-screen navigation system are the only options, but if a customer prefers a different exterior paint and interior leather colour combination, anything’s possible. Like all SsangYongs, the Rexton R-Line has a three year/60,000 mile warranty and three years’ European roadside assistance cover.

Dubai Motorsport Fest—a motor shindig the ancient Romans would have loved to see!

The Dubai Motorsport Fest, held on Nov. 14 and 15, transformed Dubai Autodrome into a motor shindig as engines thundered and the ecstatic crowd roared in a manner that would have made the ancient Romans watching their equestrian chariot racing events look nothing more than a bunch of mollycoddled milksops muttering at the sidelines. The motorsport event saw a major influx of top Emiratis and GCC nationals many of whom featured prominently in all three categories of UAE national championship levels—UAE Touring Cars, UAE Sportbikes and Gulf Radical Cup. Top winners include Bassam Kronfli who dominated the Gulf Radical Cup; visiting British driver Nigel Greensall, who made his mark in the highly competitive Class C; and Karim Al Azhari (Al Nabooda Porsche), who won in the Yellow Hat Touring Car Championship. Other victorious racers were Karim Al Azhari who bagged Class 1 in the UAE Touring Car Championship; Raed Hassan, who scooped maximum points in the event’s Class 2; Costas Papantonis who won in Class 3; Zlatko Mulabegovic, the man in Class 4; and Abdulhamid Al Awadi who clinched Class 5. In the UAE Sportbike Championship, Rod Scott topped it in the 1000 Class; Pascal Grosjean in the Superstock Class; and Jason Burnside in the 600 Class. The two-day event was also highlighted by several off-track activities which thrilled an awed crowd of spectators.
