UAE Desert Challenge The ultimate endurance test

Motormouth Launched in 1991, the UAE Desert Challenge has definitely grown to carve its own niche in the world of motoring sports—from 30 drivers in its first year to around 120 this time around. But like any undertaking, the UAE Desert Challenge is not without, well, challenges: attracting more and more participants; developing its own identity; and producing a competent national team. “Honestly,” said Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE, and the man behind the UAE Desert Challenge, “we can not just let it go now that it is in its 18th year.” The crux of the matter, as it seems, is funding, funding, and more funding. Sulayem could not have emphasized this even greater when asked by a reporter during one of the press conferences held at the Dubai International Marine Club if the UAE Desert Challenge was well on its way to nudging out Dakar Rally, which has had to cancel events because of terrorist threats. (The 2009 Dakar Rally is scheduled to take place across the South American continent, starting in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Jan. 3, 2009, according to reports.) “Yes, of course,” Sulayem replied, “but we don’t have the resources. Dakar has 15 times the resources.” Dakar is different, anyway; and the UAE Desert Challenge is unique in its own way, which is why there is the, well, again, challenge to further develop its own identity—something that would make it even more attractive to drivers. Developing an identity goes side-by-side with having a national team, otherwise, how could the event be more challenging for international participants? Sulayem said he believes there should be a national team, and that it’s just a matter of time before UAE could finally have one. All said, the UAE Desert Challenge has put the region on the global map of motor sports and has consistently contributed its share to the country’s growth. Where I come from, it’s called giving back to the community; how about giving back some more to the UAE Desert Challenge? In this issue, meantime, Car Xpress gives motoring enthusiasts like you a closer look on what’s new on the market—from the new Bentley Flying Spur, which is set to deliver even greater levels of refinement for customer personalization; to the all-electric MINI E; and the minimalist KTM X-Bow, arguably an engineering marvel that delivers the excitement and immediacy of motorcycling—on four wheels rather than two. Of course, also featured is the seductive Aston Martin DBS, a 510 horsepower machine which can go from 0 to 100kph in 4.3 seconds and has a top speed of 307kph; and BMW’s formidable arsenal—the new Laguna. Honda’s 2009 Civic futuristic exterior design, advanced technology and superb performance make for a sportier look—check it out also in this edition of Car Xpress.

Best-selling Caterham is back!
Caterham’s famous Superlight family is now complete, with the British manufacturer releasing details of a new generation of its Superlight R300. Following in the rear tyre tracks of the motor sport derived R400 and R500, the latest Seven punches from 0-to60mph in 4.5 seconds courtesy of a new 2.0-litre Ford Duratec engine, tuned by Caterham Powertrain (CPT) to deliver a responsive 175bhp. Originally launched in 2002 and fitted with a Rover engine, the previous R300 was Caterham’s best-selling Seven, thanks to an addictive character fuelled by its perfect blend of performance and driving pleasure. The new Fordpowered model builds on this platform with increased engine performance and chassis developments, all whilst retaining the R300’s winning personality. The latest 515kg interpretation of Colin Chapman’s famous lightweight minimalist 14 November 2008 Car Xpress
philosophy beautifully balances power and chassis to perfection, delivering an impressive 339bhp-per-tonne. Among many developments, the new R300 benefits from styling cues and technical evolutions first seen on its big brother—the explosive Superlight R500—with the addition of a similar flush button dash design and keyless ignition system, fitted as standard. Amongst a wide range of optional extras, hardened enthusiasts will also be able to add Stack data logging instrumentation, a dry sump oil system and, for track-day regulars, a limited slip differential. Translated through Caterham’s proven 6-speed gearbox, the 2.0-litre powerplant’s 175bhp and 139 lbs-ft of torque is able to spin the R300’s bespoke Avon CR500-shod Superlight aluminium wheels to a top speed of 140mph. Further expanding the range to offer
customers a wider range of choice is the addition of another new Seven—the Roadsport 175. Despite being fitted with the hugely capable Series 3 chassis and utilising the same 175bhp, 2.0-litre Caterham Powertrain (CPT) Duratec engine fitted to the R300, the new Roadsport is aimed at drivers largely focused on B-Road blasts and touring. The Roadsport trades its more track focused features, such as lashings of carbon fibre and track-biased suspension and brakes, to come fitted with weather equipment and a heater as standard. Other differences to the R300 include a 5-speed gearbox with longer ratios and 14-inch alloy wheels. The new Roadsport 175 model bolsters the incredibly popular Roadsport range alongside the 1600cc Ford Sigma driven 125 and 150 – numerically reflective of their respective power output.

Going Royal
Cadillac CTS luxury saloon went on display in the reception foyer of London’s Royal Automobile Club from Oct. 20 to 29—a rare privilege given to the American luxury car brand as only club members were usually allowed to use the area to exhibit their classic and vintage cars. The event was meant to celebrate Cadillac’s acquisition of the coveted Dewar Trophy 100 years ago. In 1908, under the close scrutiny of sceptical Royal Automobile Club officials, three Cadillacs were dismantled, their 2,000 parts shuffled and the cars rebuilt in a test of mechanical standardisation that at the time was unheard of in the UK and Europe. To the amazement of the media and the Club, the three rebuilt cars started without fault and each successfully completed a 500-mile fullthrottle endurance run around the famous Brooklands circuit. “I would like to extend my thanks to the Motoring Committee of the Royal Automobile Club for allowing us the privilege to display our latest model in their club,” said Jonathan Nash, director in charge, Cadillac UK. “The Dewar Trophy win of 1908 was a remarkable and definitive moment in the early history of the Cadillac brand in Europe. One hundred years on from successfully meeting one of the Club’s most challenging tests, the brand is once again at the start of a very important chapter. The Cadillac CTS…spearheads a new generation of models coming to the UK and it’s entirely fitting that the Club is once again associated with part of the history of this iconic American brand in this country.” The Dewar Trophy was presented to the Royal Automobile Club by Sir Thomas Dewar in 1904, and was first awarded in 1906, to promote technical progress in the automotive field. The award is held in as high regard today as it was in the earliest years of the 20th century, with recent winners including the JCB Dieselmax world diesel land speed record breaker. 16 November 2008 Car Xpress

Phenomenal Nissan GT-R Instructors from Silverstone International have entered the final stages of a PanEuropean driving programme to introduce the Nissan GT-R to more than 1,300 presold customers. The 19-date run at Germany’s Nurburgring follows the successful debut of the experience at the home of the British Grand Prix in August, where more than 500 owners got to grips with the super saloon car for the first time. Under the logistical arm of Silverstone International, the initial two stages of the ground-breaking “Best in Class” Nissan Academy allowed customers to experience the phenomenal performance of the GT-R as well as learn important advanced driving techniques. “Half of those who attended had been on other drive experiences, but 98 per cent of them were unanimous that the Academy was their best one yet,” explained Jonathan Tait, Sales & Marketing director, Silverstone International. Darren Cox, European Brand Promotion Manager for Nissan Europe, added: “This is not your average car and this is not your average driving experience. Nissan has set its sights high with this breakthrough customer focused launch; in partnership with Silverstone those ambitions are being delivered in spades.” Further sessions, including the opportunity to take a full race licence test, will be held during 2009. Nissan and Silverstone are working on an even bigger offering of driving experiences for Passionate Sports car drivers that will be rolled out in 2009. European deliveries of the GT-R supercar will start in April 2009. Currently the waiting list is 18 months in the UK.

Aston Martin unveiled the production version of the eagerly-awaited DBS at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California, United States. Aston Martin Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ulrich Bez, said: “The DBS is the ultimate expression of Aston Martin’s engineering and technical ability. It offers pure performance without compromise. “The DBS delivers the complete driving experience and bridges the gap between our road and track cars—the DB9 and DBR9.” Equally at home on a twisting mountain circuit as on the open road, the DBS is a true thoroughbred. The Aston Martin DBS is a 6.0-litre V12 powered, race-bred, twoseater shaped by the aerodynamic demands of high performance, with an exquisite interior that marries beautifully handfinished materials with the very latest in
performance technology. A combination of elegant design, innovative manufacturing processes, race-derived materials and components and Aston Martin’s unrivalled hand-built expertise makes the DBS a luxury sports car without equal. Every line, crease and curve conveys the enormous potential of the DBS, a seductive blend of refinement and raw power, provided by the hand-built V12 producing 380 kW (510 bhp/517 PS), a top speed of 191mph (302km/h) and a 0-62mph (0-100km/h) time of 4.3 seconds. The DBS will be built at Aston Martin’s global headquarters at Gaydon, near Warwickshire in the UK, joining the current Aston Martin line-up. This now comprises the elegant DB9, the agile V8 Vantage Coupe and the critically acclaimed Vantage Roadster – launched earlier this year.
If this won’t pass for a splendid work of art, perhaps nothing will. Car Xpress November 2008 27

The need for high-performance stability, handling ability and low kerb weight defined the DBS’s form and construction. Accordingly, the DBS becomes the first production Aston Martin to make extensive use of ultra-light carbon-fibre body panels. High levels of performance and control are delivered by the combination of inherent light weight, near-perfect weight distribution, a supremely powerful and flexible V12 engine, and a performancehoned six-speed transmission, together with new carbon ceramic brakes and an adaptive damper controlled suspension system. At the heart of the DBS is a 6.0-litre V12 engine. The DBR9 and DBRS9 race cars are powered by an enhanced version of this same V12, tuned to produce in excess of 600bhp. The shared powerplant continues the strong link between Aston Martin’s road and race cars, just as the six-cylinder engine used in the DBR1 also powered the DB4, DB5 and DB6 in the 1950s and 60s. As with all current Aston Martins, the engine is hand-assembled at Aston Martin’s dedicated engine facility in Cologne, Germany. The classic 6.0-litre V12 features a number of power-increasing enhancements.
28 November 2008 Car Xpress
These include a ‘by-pass’ engine air intake port that opens above 5500rpm to allow more air into the engine, and re-profiled air inlet ports that further improve airflow into the combustion chamber. Combined with a compression ratio of 10.9:1, the result of these enhancements is prodigious power and torque: the DBS delivers 380 kW (510 bhp/517 PS) at 6500 rpm. The 3.71:1 final-drive ratio ensures that the additional power is usable, enhancing in-gear acceleration in particular. A lightweight, rigid structure is the design engineer’s ultimate goal, and achieving the right balance between strength and mass is crucial. Like the DB9 and its sibling DBR9 and DBRS9 race cars, the DBS uses Aston Martin’s class-leading allalloy VH (Vertical Horizontal) architecture, a lightweight bonded aluminium structure that provides outstanding strength and rigidity. Aston Martin’s engineers have also employed advanced materials and processes to further reduce weight and increase the DBS’s performance and dynamics.

“A desert is a place without expectation Nadine Gordimer
Eighty-five-year old, South African novelist and short story writer, Nadine Gordimer, a recipient of the 1991 Nobel Prize for Literature, must have had something else in mind, but for the 120 participants of the 18th UAE Desert Challenge, navigating in a place so resigned and deprived to test their limits is, on the other hand, as seductively alluring a challenge as it is climbing a mountain because it’s there. Car Xpress November 2008 33

And so, all revved up, the challengers—a formidable array of rallying talents and machinery arriving from around the globe— took off on Oct. 27 for six days of endurance test that would take them through 2,197 kilometres of what could perhaps be easily called the harshest desert terrain this part of the world. The first leg kicked off at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi with the route leading away and ending at the Moreeb Hill bivouac near Liwa. The following days took rally participants to a route that stretched out from Moreeb Hill into the Rub Al Khali or Empty Quarter before the final stages led them to the finish at Dubai International Marine Club where peers and spectators were waiting with cameras on hand. “We had all the ingredients for a very exciting and highly competitive event which is the culmination of a great year-round team effort,” Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE, told media at an official press conference held, Oct. 25, 2008 at the Dubai International Marine Club. The UAE Desert Challenge has provided the region with it’s breakthrough into World Championship motor sport and has continued to go from strength to strength since it was launched by Sulayem in 1991. In its first year, the UAE Desert Challenge attracted 30 drivers, largely from the UAE and the neighbouring Gulf states, for a one-day encounter with the Dubai deserts. But from that point on, the event has grown into a major international motor sport showpiece, attracting top drivers and riders from around the world to compete with leading Arab competitors and expatriates, and building up a huge international TV audience. In 1992, with the event just a year old, Sulayem took a break from practice for the World Championship San Remo Rally in Italy and flew off to a meeting with the FIA, motor sport’s world governing body, to stake his claim for a place in the Cross Country Rally World Cup. The following year the UAE Desert Challenge was added to the World Cup calendar and the event quickly became established as a key round of the series. Certainly not an experience for the faint hearted, the Desert Challenge unfolds across some of the most demanding and spectacular desert terrain in the region, providing a stern test for man, woman—a succession of female competitors had taken up the challenge through the years—and machine. 34 November 2008 Car Xpress
First Arab winner in 15 years dominates race, hours ahead of rival at finish story continued in page 35
The following are excerpts from a Car Xpress interview with Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the man behind the UAE Desert Challenge, following a press conference he held about the event at Dubai International Marine Club Conference Centre, Oct. 20, 2008 . Sulayem, who launched the UAE Desert Challenge in 1991, holds a string of victories from several race events dating back to 1985; and recognitions—including medals of honour from the Kings of Bahrain and Jordan and the Lebanese President—for his feat Car Xpress: You mentioned during the conference that UAE Desert Challenge has its own identity in the world of motor sports. How different will this event be from other such events, then? Sulayem: I do not mind bringing somebody here who would take his experience with him and work together (with us). But I am not (inaudible)… this event just to bring somebody, rent somebody, come organize it on my part of the world, on my country and just go. I don’t need this. I need their experience but identity should be there. I am the organizer, all the pressure comes down on me. I don’t want to go and then we change the language from Arabic and then use everything from then on. No. I cannot go and imitate somebody. I cannot go and imitate everything. We are a sixday event, but what happens in six days, believe me, is more than what is demanded of 10 days because of the tough terrain; the heat is there, it’s a different event and we should keep it that way. You can be out there and really experience how it is to be in the middle of nowhere.
We are a six-day event, but what happens in six days, believe me, is more than what is demanded of 10 days because of the tough terrain. You can be out there and really experience how it is to be in the middle of nowhere.” -- Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president, Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE.
Car Xpress: National team? How far away is it? Sulayem: In this type of event, it’s difficult (to organize a national team) because it needs a lot of budget. It needs a lot of money and it needs good drivers. Car Xpress: Don’t we have enough? Sulayem: There is a lot of local drivers qualified, but there has to be professionalism and discipline. Car Xpress: How do you feel about this year’s Desert Challenge? Sulayem: We have over 120 entries and we are happy with it. It’s a challenging event, definitely. Car Xpress November 2008 35

Qatar’s Nasser Al-Attiyah became the first Arab driver to win the UAE Desert Challenge in 15 years, dominating the 2,197-km, six-day rally from start to finish in his prototype BMW X3 with partner, top Swedish lady co-driver, Tina Thorner. The duo also clinched the drivers’ title in the FIA World Cup for Cross Country Rallies. Clocking in at 18:22:46, Al-Attiyah reached the finish in Dubai with a four-hour-and-27-minute margin over the UAE’s irrepressible Yahya Alhelei, who took second place in a standard production class Nissan Patrol. Finishing third in the event, which was sponsored by Nakheel and Nissan, was Russian driver, Vladimir Chagin in one of the impressive Kamaz trucks. The top six was completed by Poland’s Krzysztof Holowczyc, in a Nissan Navara T1, UAE-based Joseph Rosso in a Nissan Pathfinder and Emirati driver Abdulla Alheraiz in a Nissan Patrol.
Becoming the first Arab driver to taste victory in the event since fellow Qatari Saeed Al Hajri in 1993, a delighted Al-Attiyah said at the finish: “Fantastic, I’m really happy. This week has gone very well. We have tried various set-ups with the car which have worked well, and the tyres we selected have been very good. “It was a shame the other teams decided to go to Morrocco for testing, it would have been exciting and closer competition with them here. Taking part in the Desert Challenge has for us been the testing ground for the car.” The Desert Challenge was also sponsored by Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, ADNOC, Emarat, Hertz UAE, Oasis Water, Inmarsat, Arasca Medical Equipment, Mashreq Bank, Messina Line, Tag Heuer, FedEx, Dubai International Marine Club and Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort and Marina, the official hotel.

BMW Group will present the new, electrically-powered MINI E to the world for the first time at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Nov. 19 and 20, 2008. Following the event, 500 MINI E vehicles will be shipped to the US states of California, New York and New Jersey for testing with private and corporate customers. The development of the MINI E underlines BMW Group’s commitment to reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in road traffic, without compromise to the driving experience. The 500 cars bound for North America will offer BMW Group the opportunity to evaluate ownership potential for vehicles supplied with an electric power supply. BMW Group aims to begin series production in the medium term of allelectric vehicles as part of the company’s Number ONE strategy. The cars will be delivered to customers on a one-year lease with an extension option. Monthly lease installments will cover any required technical service including all necessary maintenance and the replacement of wearing parts. At the end of the lease, all of the automobiles belonging to the project will be returned to the BMW Group’s engineering fleet where they will be subjected to comparative tests.
54 November 2008 Car Xpress
Specifications and performance The MINI E’s electric drive train produces a peak torque of 220 Nm, and power is delivered to the front wheels via a single-stage helical gearbox. This unique engine and transmission arrangement powers the MINI E seamlessly to 62 mph in 8.5 seconds and on to an electronically-limited top speed of 95 mph. Based on the current MINI Hatch, the car will initially be available as a two-seater. The space normally inhabited by rear passengers
is reserved for a lithium-ion battery. When in use in the zero-emissions MINI, the battery unit combines high output with ample storage capacity and remarkable power output. The lithium-ion storage unit will have a maximum capacity of 35 kilowatt hours (kWh)
and transmit energy to the electric motor as direct current at a nominal 380 volts. The rechargeable battery is made up of 5,088 cells grouped into 48 modules. These modules are packaged into three battery elements that are compactly arranged inside the MINI E. The energy storage unit’s basic components are based on technologies proven in power supply units for mobile phones and portable computers. The MINI E’s lithium-ion battery can be plugged into all standard power outlets. Its charge time is strongly dependent on the voltage and amperage of the electricity flowing through the grid. In the USA, users can recharge a battery that has been completely drained within a very short period of time using a wallbox that will be supplied as standard with every MINI E. The wallbox will be installed in the customer’s garage, enable higher amperage, and thus provide for extremely short charging times. Wallboxes fully recharge batteries in just two-and-a-half hours. Only lockable garages or similar buildings will qualify as power stations for the MINI E.
Zero emissions A full recharge draws a maximum of 28 kilowatt hours of electricity from the grid. Based on the car’s range, a kilowatt hour translates into 5.4 miles. Besides the benefit
of zero-emissions driving, the MINI E thus offers significant economic advantages over a vehicle powered by a conventional internal combustion engine. The heavy-duty battery delivers its power to an electric motor, which is mounted transversely under the MINI E’s bonnet. This power unit is able to unleash its full thrust from a dead standstill and is complemented by its dynamic deceleration potential, which is directly coupled to the accelerator pedal. As soon as the driver releases the accelerator pedal, the electric motor acts as a generator. This results in braking force, and the power recovered from the kinetic energy is fed back to the battery. This interaction ensures a comfortable and smooth driving experience. In city traffic, some 75 per cent of all deceleration can be done without the brakes. Making substantial use of this energy regeneration feature extends the car’s range by up to 20 percent. The MINI E’s brake system comes with a newly developed electric pump. Its Electrical Power Assisted Steering (EPS) is the same as the one used in mass-produced MINIs. The MINI E’s 1,465 kilograms is evenly distributed across the car. Handling safety is ensured by modifications to the suspension system and the car’s Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), which is adapted due to this model’s specific wheel loads.

Unique styling Every MINI E produced for this pilot project will have the same paintwork and bear a serial number on their front bumpers. The MINI E’s coachwork features an exclusive combination of metallic Dark Silver on all panels but the roof, which is clad in Pure Silver. What distinguishes the zero-emissions MINI E is a unique logo in Interchange Yellow, depicting a stylised power plug in the shape of an “E” set against a silver background. It has been applied to the roof, in smaller dimensions to the front and back, to the charger port lid, the dashboard trim, and – combined with the MINI logo – to the door jamb, in slightly modified form. The colour of the roof edges, mirror housings, interior style cues and seat seams will also match the logo’s yellow hue. Inside, the central gauge and battery level indicator behind the wheel of the MINI E—which replaces the MINI’s rev counter— feature yellow lettering against a dark grey background. The battery level is displayed in percentage figures. The central gauge includes an LED display indicating power consumption in red and power recuperation in green.
2008. MINI’s Plant Oxford will be responsible for manufacturing the entire vehicle on the standard production line, with the exception of the drive components and the lithium-ion battery. The units will then be transferred to a specially equipped manufacturing facility situated on BMW plant premises where the electric motor, battery units, performance electronics and transmission will be integrated.
Maintenance The electric drive’s high-voltage technology requires that maintenance work be done by qualified personnel using special tools that are not included in MINI service partners’ standard toolboxes. In light of this, a service base will be set up for customers in California, New York and New Jersey, staffed by MINI service engineers that are specially trained to perform maintenance and repair work on the MINI E’s electrical components. In the event of drive malfunction, these experts will provide professional support at the customer’s local MINI dealer or the service base’s specially equipped workshop. Technical inspections will take place after 3,000 miles ( just under 5,000 kilometres) and at least after six months.
Production The MINI E has already gone through the major phases of product development for mass-produced vehicles and passed numerous crash tests on the way. The MINI E’s energy storage unit emerged completely unscathed from all of the crash tests mandated by US standards, which are especially high. Production of the 500 cars will take place at the company’s Oxford and Munich sites and is scheduled for completion before the end of Car Xpress November 2008 57

During the autumn of 2005, KTM CEO Stefan Pierer and Gerald Kiska, CEO and founder of the KISKA design studio, met for a routine meeting in Salzburg. The result was the beginnings of a visionary, seminal automobile project. Against the background of the worrying state of the European motorcycle market—fewer drivers held a motorcycle license compared to earlier years—were the brightening prospects of a widening window of opportunity appearing in the market for “pure” sports cars. Sports

cars that, with a clear vision aligned to the KTM philosophy, ready to race, and clever engineering, might be able to deliver the excitement and immediacy of motorcycling— on four wheels rather than two. The meeting was a success and the lightweight, high-performance KTM X-Bow was conceived. The fathers of X-Bow moved quickly, commissioning an in-house “test mule” to prove the validity of their concept and, in January 2006, began talking with Italian racing car and sports car specialist Dallara about the
feasibility of KTM’s plan for developing such a road car. KTM celebrated the world premiere of its first-ever car at the Geneva Motor Show in 2007 when the X-Bow was officially born. The company sounded out the exclusive lightweight sports car market with an aggressive design and a spectacular concept, complete with carbon fibre monocoque and the minimum of purist fittings. Extensive market research was undertaken and, following an overwhelmingly positive response from sports car enthusiasts and
motoring media all around the world, the decision was made to go ahead with further development for the series production model of the KTM X-Bow. On the anniversary of that world premiere, KTM exhibited the productionready version of the KTM X-Bow for the first time at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show. From this point on, progress was rapid. KTM had already started building a production plant in the Austrian motor city, Graz, and at the same time, assembly of the first prototype cars began in Automobile Salon in Geneva.
Series production started on 16 June, the first customer took delivery of his X-Bow on 5 Aug. At the end of September 2008, the next milestone in KTM’s young car division was reached: the first KTM X-Bow Race, a fully FIA homologated GT4 Sports Light racing car, rolled off the assembly line in Graz. This new Race model incorporates all the lessons learned during the X-Bow’s first season of professional motor sport in Europe. Compared to the standard road car, the X-Bow Race features 30 modified or new components.
Ready to Race Motor sport is very important for KTM, as indicated by the company slogan, “Ready to Race.” It was therefore entirely logical that at the same time as the plans for the series production were developing, KTM was planning to run the X-Bow competitively on the racetrack. Together with Dallara, KTM developed its own racing version, with the cars being run in the GT4 European Cup by German race team, Reiter Engineering. The decision by KTM to place the racing premiere of X-Bow
Car Xpress November 2008 63
in the hands of Reiter, rather than enter the championship with an in-house, factory-run operation, allowed KTM to use the GT4 entry as a pilot project to power development of future customer motor sport applications as well as the production model. As with the production road car, KTM drew on the vast expertise of world-renowned Italian racing driver Loris Bicocchi in the development of the X-Bow Race. He has been heavily involved in the X-Bow programme from the outset as test driver and played an important role in its chassis and dynamics tuning. Biccochi’s motor sport experience includes the testing, development and racing of many of the world’s most prestigious super cars—including the Koenigsegg CCR and the Bugatti Veyron. In retrospect, KTM can say that the X-Bow first saw the light of the day on a racetrack. Although conceived as road car, racing DNA is at its core and motor sport was a logical step. Together with the experienced Reiter Engineering GT team, KTM soon found the GT4 European Cup run by the SRO and Stephane Ratel as the ideal racing series for the X-Bow. Racing in the Sports Light category, KTM faced opponents from Lotus and Donkervoort, but the X-Bow also took on the immensely more powerful teams in the primary GT4 European Cup series, with their Aston Martin N24, BMW Z4 M, Ford Mustang or Nissan 350Z cars. The changes made to the GT4 racing X-Bow (compared with the production model) are predominantly related to additional safety equipment demanded by FIA regulations. The rollover bars are made of steel instead of
64 November 2008 Car Xpress
aluminum; additional layers of zylon fibre are fastened to the flanks of the monocoque to enhance side-impact protection and prevent the penetration of sharp objects; the exhaust system has a racing cataytic converter; the mudguards are extended; and there is added side-impact protection between the front and rear wheels (to prevent tangling with other cars). These modifications are so minor that they highlight the fundamentally sporting design of the X-Bow, confirming that even the roadgoing model has the soul of a racing car. In fact, the GT4 KTM X-Bow complies with the FIA crash-regulations (Article 258a) and meets the same safety standards as dedicated open wheel and ALMS-race cars. Throughout 2008, competitive racing provided important feedback in the final phase of the series production car development. It also served as a trial run for the future KTM Customer Racing Service, and for the development of the customer racing version of the X-Bow.
GT racing for everyone: the KTM Customer Racing Service Through its new Customer Racing Service, KTM aims to write a new chapter in national and international motor racing, by providing everything a racing enthusiast needs to take part in professional motor sport. CRS customers from all over the world will be able to race their own X-Bow Race in professionallevel motor sport, with support from a dedicated team of KTM race technicians.
Whether competing in the GT4 European Cup, in the ADAC GT Masters or at selected 24 hour or endurance races around the globe, the KTM CRS will supply customers with a full support crew, an extensive range of spare parts, and technical support for all the drivers and teams who campaign a X-Bow. Running a KTM X-Bow Race is simple and cost effective. The minimalist concept of the car means that it is extremely easy to maintain and offers significantly lower running costs than competitor cars. As well as creating the CRS and working to make customer entry into GT racing even easier, KTM hopes to introduce a Sports Light category in each country that hosts a national GT racing series. In addition, expansion to higher racing classes is planned – so that KTM customers are not only ‘Ready to Race’ immediately, in GT4, but also have the opportunity to achieve longer-term ambitions within a sustainable and progressive motorsport programme. The CRS was designed with the idea of making entry to professional motorsport easy and affordable, with prices for one season’s GT4 racing only costing around €100,000 (based on four race cars minimum in one support structure). This figure is based on eight GT races – six in the GT4 European Cup and a further two in a national GT4 championship – and includes full service of a customer’s own car, transport, race service by specialist race engineers, hospitality for customers and team, spare parts (excluding crash-damaged parts), tires, fuel, and driver and team wear.

rOLLING THUNDER Eighteen year old from Lebanon wins Group N category in 8th International Hill Climb Championship In his first ever official participation in rally car racing 18-yearold Joe Ghanem won the Group N category and finished 7th overall in the 8th International Hill Climb Championship event that took place in Syria on Oct. 10, 2008. Driving City of Arabia’s Group N - Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 9, Ghanem impressed participants and officials with his raw speed and driving technique, putting the City of Arabia car in 1st position among Group N and creating a +1.37 second gap between him and the second group N car. The 8th International Hill Climb Championship was made up of two events—the first took place in Lebanon where the 18-year-old was driving the same car however as the opening car (number zero) and not as an official participant. During the event in Lebanon, Ghanem also topped the time chart among group N entries; had he been an official participant, he would have won this event and the Championship for Group N. Ghanem, son of Lebanese rally champion Samir Ghanem, entered the world of motorsports at a 76 November 2008 Car Xpress

very young age; he started karting at 7; his first official participation happened when he was 14 where he won the Junior Lebanese Championship (Formula A). In 2006, when he was 16, Ghanem took part in the Thunder Arabia Middle East Series (Formula Ford 1.6) series finishing 3rd overall with 1 pole position, 6 podiums and 4 fastest laps. He was invited this same year to test with the prestigious Red Bull Junior Team whose graduates were the likes of Sebastien Vettel. In 2007 he took part in 8 races in the Formula Renault Eurocup series (Renault 2.0) which run across 8 European tracks, and the Formula Renault UK Winter series (Renault 2.0). Commenting on his win, Ghanem said: “I am very happy with my result…seeing that this is my first official participation in a hill climb race and in a rally car. I would like to thank Michel Saleh and llyas & Mustafa Galadari of City of Arabia for giving me this opportunity.” He added, “Coming from single-seater racing, I approached this event like a qualification session where there are no places for mistakes. You have to learn the track quickly, drive your car to its utmost limit and speed, and put in a quick lap.” Ghanem said that what he has learned from single-seater racing has helped him. “I am sure that whatever I learnt today will help me when
I am in the cockpit of a Formula Renault or Formula three car. “My main focus will remain formula racing; however a successful career in motorsports is highly dependent on partnerships - I hope we can attract partners so I can get back on the international racing tracks,” he said.

Nivea for Men Challenge 24 Hours of Dubai 250 participants take up supreme endurance test The road to victory was tough and full of challenges as 250 drivers in 40 teams did up to one hour stints, swapping with co-drivers during pit stops to the finish where the checkered flag waved like a bright red banner to stampeding bulls! To the sound of growling engines, the UAE national flag flapped furiously as it signaled the start of the grueling third and final round of the Nivea for Men Endurance Challenge 24 Hours of Dubai held, Oct. 24 at the Kartdrome. The much-awaited karting event set off the biggest field of local and international teams ever assembled in the region for a 24-hour supreme test of skill, stamina and team work. Bahrain’s Team Batelco emerged triumphant, defeating the immensely strong Nivea for Men (NFM) Professionals squad which had dominated previous 24-hour events in Dubai for almost two years. It was locally based Team Sara TDG led by local karting aces Richie McLeod, Rami Azzam, Tim Murdoch and Zaamin Jaffer who had actually set the pace ahead of the Kartdrome Speedsters and the pre-race favourites Nivea for Men Professionals in the early stages of the race. But the Bahraini squad, Batelco was already as high up as third. The ferocity of the competition had 78 November 2008 Car Xpress
been such that the top 15 teams were all circulating on the same lap on the two hour mark. Others that were showing strongly include Team Power, French team MF Chrono 1 and Oman Racing Team. The first day’s action had most spectators holding their breath still as a fast early pace has not always been an indicator of the outcome of such a race. With drivers doing up to one hour stints, swapping with co-drivers during pit stops, it would be the teams who strategise and use their human resources most effectively without making mistakes that would be in for victory.
Team Batelco was it.
The road to victory was tough and full of challenges for the team from the outset. Batelco started to impose themselves shortly after a full course yellow was declared and saw the field run behind the safety car for four laps, in the early hours of Saturday morning. Thereafter the team maximised their driver stints, put in some
remarkable pit stops and proceeded to set a relentless pace which saw them grow their lead by five laps over the NFM Professionals by sunrise. Into the final hours, the team maintained a fast pace, made no mistakes and controlled proceedings until the flag was waved at 2.30pm, by Union Properties CEO Simon Azzam—victory going to the boys from Bahrain. Exhausted but clearly delighted Batelco team manager Ali Abbas was full of praise for his team at the end of the race, “It was a very tough event with such a big field of professional and international drivers. It is a good victory for our team as we have been together now for three years and the drivers are committed and operated well as a until. We took maximum advantage of the full course yellow, in the middle of the race, and from then I believe we had the best strategy which our drivers capitalised on and ultimately led to our victory. This was a fantastic event, professionally organised, great competitors and Inshalla we will be back next year.”

Roaring thunder at Dubai Autodrome
Dubai Autodrome was a roaring thunder last Oct. 24, 2008 as it hosted the UAE National Race Day 1 presented by TAM Auto Engineering. In the Yellow Hat UAE Touring Car Championship, reigning champion Karim Al Azhari emerged triumphant in both races on the opening day of the season in his Al Nabooda Porsche; he did so, however by the narrowest margins. Al Azhari won a four-way battle for overall honours against Emirati ace Mohammed Al Falasi (Corvette), Costas Papantonis (House of Portier SEAT) and Raed Hassan (Mitsubishi). From the start of both races the four drivers swapped positions several times on each lap of the 15 lap race. Azhari took the checkered flag in Race 1 by under a half a second from Al Falasi with Papantonis taking third place and Hassan settling for fourth – just over a second separated the four drivers at the end of the race. Race 2 was almost a replay of the first, again nothing to separate the leading quartet who set a scorching pace. It all came down to the final laps where the canny driving of Al Azhari saw him take another win and clinch the double for the day with Al Falasi in his slip-stream taking second, Papantonis third and Hassan fourth – this time the four were separated by a mere half second at the finish line. Al Azhari took two Class 1 wins, Hassan two Class 2 wins and Papantonis two Class 3 wins on the day. UAE driver Mohammed Al Owais (Honda Civic) won both Class 4 races ahead of Zlatko Mulabegovic who was a comfortable second in the first race but had to work hard in the second race where he was pushed all the way by Khalid Al Mutawaa (House of Portier Renault Clio) who took third place in Class 4. Emirati driver Essa Bin Hadher (Honda Integra) was comfortable winner of Race 1 in Class 5 leading home compatriots Arif Al Marazeeq (Toyota Levin) and Abdul Hamid Al Awadi (Honda Civic). The latter turned the 80 November 2008 Car Xpress
tables in Race 2 to take victory over Abbas Alawi (Golf GTi) and Al Marazeeq. Meantime, the 2008 Gulf Radical Cup sportscar championship got off to a flying start with 17 competitors racing in 3 classes, 6 of whom were enjoying their first outing. This was the event’s largest entry since the inception of the series in January 2006. Class A, featuring the 2.6 litre V8 engined Radical SR8, saw Bassam Kronfli just over a second per lap quicker than John Stanley, fresh from his stunning overall victory in the prestigious Radical European Masters series. Only four tenths of a second behind was Cabell Fisher followed by Harvey Boulter in the yellow Porton Group SR8 LM. Race 1 got off with Kronfli taking an immediate lead. However, this was not to last as he picked up a very unfortunate puncture which meant his car was safely parked behind. The star of the show was young Saudi national, Fahad Al Gosaibi, who was on his very first race in the UAE. Having qualified first in Class C, Fahad drove a calm and precise race in his Al Gosaibi Travel Radical SR3 to win his class ahead of Irishman Dave Moran and ex-Trinidad and Tobago rally champion, Keverne McShine. Race 2 enabled Kronfli to deliver on the promise that he showed in qualifying. Having to start at the rear of the grid because of his DNF in the first race, Kronfli charged through the somewhat slower cars in the DAMC Invitation Class and then got past the faster Class C cars to get himself behind his Class A SR8s within 4 laps. The next two Rounds of the Gulf Radical Cup will be held in Bahrain on 7th and 8th November while Round 2 of the UAE National Championships (including the Yellow Hat Touring Car Championship with House of Portier, UAE Sportbike Championship and Gulf Radical Cup) will take place at Dubai Autodrome on 14/15 November 2008 during the Dubai Motorsport Festival.
