Editor’s Note
new year brings new potential for travel. Around the world, more and more exotic and exciting places are being discovered. Thousands of travel packages for a whole new world of holidays are being offered to the ever increasing number of travellers worldwide.
This year, travel experts say that destinations in Asia and river cruises in Europe are among the hottest new trends in travel. Asian countries listed as top travel destinations in 2007 are China and India. Other favoured destinations are Morocco, Russia, Bulgaria, Australia, Brazil and the United Arab Emirates. The UAE is considered one of the top 10 destinations because it has everything that visitors could want - beaches, deserts, duty-free shopping, water sports, safety, dining facilities and the weather. The presence of these facilities has attracted a number of investors to the UAE. Seeing this potential, the government began developing projects that would also attract millions of visitors to travel here. Dubai started the trend and now, the rest of the emirates took the same initiative. The Abu Dhabi government has taken an active approach to help boosts the tourism industry. Several impressive and multi-billion projects like the Saadiyat Islands and the Yas Islands and the construction of the world’s largest Guggenheim Museum in Abu Dhabi will position the emirate as a top holiday and cultural destination. In line with this, UAE’s national airline, Etihad Airways has undertaken the same objective. Just three years in operation, the airline has reported a tremendous growth. Etihad Airways now flies to 37 destinations (the latest is Kuala Lumpur) and more routes are opening in the future. Delivery of Etihad’s new aircraft is on average one plane every month for the last 12 months. Currently, the fleet is composed of 24 aircraft, and there are plans of bringing another 10 this year to supply the increasing demand of travellers to and from Abu Dhabi. We also visited Golden Tulip Al Jazira Hotel & Resort, a secluded place between the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway near the Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club. The hotel resort is a convenient and relaxing getaway but you won’t feel like you left home because all the amenities of your home can be found in their chalets. The river cruises is also becoming a new craze in vacations. We took a cruise to the Nile River and realised that the cruise is more exhilarating because one gets to see a lot of places. The boat stops in villages or towns and the fewer cabins give a more intimate experience than a big ship with several thousand passengers. Since we are still enjoying the winter season, check our feature on the best winter vacations. We listed eight places to visit and enjoy. Although most of the places are for skiing, there are other attractions to appreciate like the surrounding mountainscapes and the nature itself. And it’s best to enjoy these trips with the whole family because most of the accommodations offer fabulous activities for children. I hope you enjoy this January issue because we are featuring more destinations to help you on your next travel here or abroad. Whether you’re planning a trip this winter, next summer or just a couple of weekend breaks, may you find our featured stories helpful and informative. For travelers within the UAE and the region, more pages will be dedicated to local happenings, promotions and events. Travel Arabia will continue providing you insight to the best places to eat, the best spa to enjoy your tranquil moments and more attractions to discover. We have an exciting year ahead and whatever your travel plans this 2007, I hope it will bring the most wonderful and unforgettable memories. Cheers!

Kudos to Travel Arabia I have read your December 2006 issue and happy to see that it’s improving. I think you are catering more to your target market. It has more substance now because there are more reading materials especially on destinations which is a big help especially for travel agencies. An insight to Dubai Shopping This article about the imitation industry in Dubai is interesting. It’s amazing that such business exists even in a rich country like Dubai where you can get everything, from the tiniest knickknacks to the latest gadgets. Dubai is really a shopping haven for both the rich and the not so poor. A lot of visitors, like me, go to Karama to get the best value for our money. I’ve seen a lot of people visit here and go home with bags full of items. I’m not sure how the industry is hurting the whole Dubai shopping business but for one, I love going to this place. Oxana Martin Bahrain
A waste of time The 11th and 12th edition of the Dubai Shopping Festival is enormous – from the planning to the execution and promotions. I believed it attracted a lot of visitors, not only from the region but from a whole lot of different places. I came for the shopping festival and the visit to the Global Village was a disappointment for me. Gone were the rides we enjoyed in 2005. What’s more disappointing is that the fees have increased. Most of the rides are too short for 10 dirhams. The fireworks display is too short as well. It was a waste of time traveling from the city to Global Village only to get upset at the attractions. Mohammed Akbar Dubai
Traffic woes I am a visitor from California and I am amazed at the ongoing developments in Dubai. There are constructions wherever you go and this affects the traffic especially when you take the Al Maktoum Bridge. A lot of times I had to cancel my trip if I want to go to City Centre or the Festival City because I would spend at least an hour or more going to these places. But I heard the metro project will help alleviate the traffic problems. And there are road widening projects that will end next year. I just hope that this problem will end soon so we can all enjoy our visit to the different attractions in the City. Abe Bangit Vallejo, California

In Abu Dhabi
Enchanting
Abu Dhabi
from the traditional to the ultra-modern By Habeeb Salloum

For a first time visitor, it is difficult to decide what part of Abu Dhabi is the most remarkable. Its modern architecturally stunning buildings and hotels - many in arabesque style, urbane aura, flower-filled parks, and up-to-date tourist facilities - all have a great deal to offer visitors.
W
ith the exception of Dubai, perhaps no other metropolis in our modern world is drawing the attention of businessmen and tourists as the cosmopolitan city of Abu Dhabi - the scenic capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Transformed in the last three decades from a poor mud town to a 21st century city of ultra modern skyscrapers, wide tree-lined avenues, landscaped parks and eye-catching villas, it is today a city of magic. Its skyline, giving an allusion of a mini-Manhattan, tells a story more fabulous than the tales from the Arabian Nights. With a population of more than 1 million, Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, has succeeded in developing at an unbelievable pace. For a first time visitor, it is difficult to decide what part of the city is the most remarkable. Its modern architecturally stunning buildings and hotels - many in arabesque style, urbane aura, 20 flower-filled parks, and up-to-date tourist facilities - all have a great deal to offer visitors. This once sleepy Arabian Gulf town has been recast, in the past few decades, into one of the most opulent and beautiful cities on earth, encompassing a kaleidoscope of contrasts and urban refinement. Yet, no matter what century or what technological innovation the country has adapted, the Abu Dhabi and in fact all UAE continues to maintain its deeply rooted Arab culture and its Muslim traditions, all evolving to fit January 2007
into an international lifestyle. Located on the southern shore of the Arabian Gulf, between Europe and the eastern Orient, the city is today a meeting place of people from the four corners of the world. There are numerable ethnic groups, from the Far East to the Americas, all living and working side by side in tolerance, creating a truly multi-cultural city where cleanliness, safety and a quality of life surpass those of most other large urban centres in the world. One of the fastest developing commercial and tourism pivotal points on the globe, the city of Abu Dhabi, along with its sister city, Dubai - the crown jewels of the United Arab Emirates - are throbbing with life, yet retaining a relaxed and sophisticated ambience. As a result of government and private investment, Abu Dhabi boasts a wide range of state-of-the-art facilities, covering everything from world-class hotels, desalination plants and telecommunication systems to convention and exhibition halls. The city is the home to worldclass hospitals, schools and all types of recreational facilities, magnificent public buildings, modern road networks and greenery - over 25 million trees have been planted in the emirate of Abu Dhabi since the modernization and transformation of the state began - creating an atmosphere appealing to inhabitants, business people and travellers alike.
For those involved in business, Abu Dhabi is a capitalist paradise. Its hotels - many managed by some of the world’s top hotel companies, have facilities and ambiances that can match the best on the globe. The communication systems in the whole of the United Arab Emirates with the four corners of the world are without equal. Government regulations and taxes are minimal and deals struck are always carried out to the letter. This along with the city’s personal safety, lack of beggars and vagrants, crime-free streets, no mosquitoes, and welcoming atmosphere for foreign investment is fuelling the transformation of this once desert land. It can truthfully be said that Abu Dhabi is on the tongue of businessmen and travellers from across the world. For these entrepreneurs and other visitors, it is a pleasure to walk along Abu Dhabi ‘s breathtaking 8 km (5 mi) long newly renovated Corniche, whose blue Gulf waters, are made tame and smooth by a man-made breakwater, linked to the mainland by a road, atop of which parks, fine restaurants, a 21st century shopping mall, have been built. These are crowned by a heritage village featuring among the exhibits, artisans plying their crafts - a true exhibition of how life in Abu Dhabi was in the earlier less wealthy eras. A short distance from where the road leads to the breakwater off the Corniche , are located the traditional shipyards where men, like their 13
ancestors of long ago, continue to build dhows by hand. The colourful setting of these craftsmen creating dhows, which still ply the ancient trade routes from India to East Africa, is like a livingexotic scene from the past. For shoppers enjoying the contemporary, the city is saturated with large shopping plazas, modern and imaginatively designed where sophisticated merchants offer the name brands of the world at very reasonable cost. Taxes and customs duties are virtually non-existent. Hence, inside and outside the country, enterprising traders can make great business deals for both private and wholesale shoppers. The mixture of people from every continent has given birth to a rich and varied cuisine ranging from Indian, Syrian, Lebanese and Egyptian to
French, Iranian, Italian and Mexican in addition to the traditional Gulf foods. All, and much more, can be found in the restaurants that saturate the malls and hotels in the city. Besides the city’s charming parks, avenues, malls and inviting sea, for visitors seeking other unique sites there are: Zayed Sport City, the largest multi-purpose-built football stadium in the Middle East; the city’s Olympic-sized skating rink, in a place where ice and snow have never been known; and 21st century golfing in a series of golf clubs as well as horse racing facilities. On the other hand, for those seeking something new, there are the journeys to the surrounding desert. Tour companies take tourists on safaris to ride the dunes, sand ski, camel ride, explore the wadis (dry creek beds) and feast while
being entertained under the starry desert sky. On the other hand, if visitors yearn for the sea voyages of Sindbad, dhows can be rented through tour companies to sail the Arabian Gulf. These attributes from the past and those of the modern world, along with the pleasant staff in the tourist facilities and perfect weather during the winter months, make Abu Dhabi ideal for winter vacationers. However, for others, all-yearround, it is an exotic destination with a modern lifestyle. Combining the magic of the East with the facilities and pleasures of the modern world, the city has become a tourist hotbed par excellence for business people and tourists alike. Ripe from the Thousand and One Nights, Abu Dhabi spreads its light as the innovator of the past, living with the contemporary.

A glimpse at
Abu Dhabi’s future By Flor B. Pamintuan
F
rom its origin as a centre for fishing and pearl trade, Abu Dhabi, the largest and the richest of the emirates is now emerging as a must-see destination in the region. Today, more and more visitors are discovering this unique destination and multi-billion dollar projects are underway that would attract both business and leisure travelers. The shift of investment to Abu Dhabi was marked by the Property Law signed by His Highness President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan in August 2005 which allowed UAE nationals to own and trade land in Abu Dhabi for the first time. GCC nationals were permitted to do so within designated areas while other expatriates could invest on renewable 99-year leases within these zones. To support this endeavor, the government embarked on an expansive economic investment program to promote Abu Dhabi as a tourism destination. In 2004, the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) was created. Chaired by His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, ADTA’s key responsibilities include the development of an overall tourism strategy for Abu Dhabi, directing the implementation of activities needed to achieve strategic objectives and creating the physical infrastructure required by tourism operators and their clientele. Abu Dhabi is planning to add 17,000 hotel rooms in a bid to increase tourism to the emirate from almost a million in 2004 to more than three million by 2015. ADTA has approved investment packages for 4,000 new rooms to be added in the next three years. Saadiyat Island One project that ADTA is currently overseeing
January 2007
is the Saadiyat Island, an AED100 billion (US$27 billion) project which is expected to be completed in 2018. The project is the largest single mixed-use island development in the Arabian Gulf. The 27 square kilometre natural island lays only 500 metres offshore Abu Dhabi island. Saadiyat Island – which translates from Arabic as Island of Happiness - represents one of the most important development opportunities in Abu Dhabi’s history. The island has 30kms of water frontage and boasts many natural eco-features including mangrove forests. “The development of Saadiyat represents one of the most vibrant episodes in the capital’s evolution,” explained His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Executive Council Chairman. “Saadiyat’s development will heighten awareness of Abu Dhabi’s plan for economic diversification and will reinforce the perception of the capital city as a regional, international, business and tourism hub. Saadiyat is a symbol of Abu Dhabi’s renewed economic openness and a signal to the world that this emirate is very much open for partnership and business on an international scale.” “Saadiyat’s transformation is a key proposition in the Abu Dhabi government’s strategy of increasing tourism to the emirate from its current level of almost one million to three million by 2015 – a projected growth rate of 11.3% a year,” said His Highness Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman of both ADTA and TDIC. The figure might be conservative when compared to other destination but it is in keeping with the government’s approach of ensuring

Abu Dhabi has embarked on several projects set to lure visitors from all over the world. These projects are in complete harmony with the government’s vision, one of which is to make sure that all of the city’s natural attractions – from coral life to unique dunes - are preserved and protected. a high calibre of visitor and at the same time, safeguarding the city’s natural assets and culture for the benefit of the next generations. “Saadiyat will be a premier island destination as well as a modern, integrated residential community for Abu Dhabi, where residents can live, work and enjoy a full complement of leisure and tourism facilities, as well as civic and cultural amenities. One of the over-riding development criteria is the creation of this multi-faceted destination while retaining and enhancing the island’s natural beauty.” Master planned to differentiate it as a centre of sophisticated elegance in one of the world’s most rapidly developing regions, Saadiyat, the island off an island, will eventually be home to 150,000 residents – a population approximately the size of Oxford in the UK or Hollywood in the USA. The island will have 19 kilometres of white, sandy beach, two golf courses, 29 hotels with over 7,000 rooms, including an iconic 7-star property, three marinas with berthing for 1,000 vessels, over 8,000 private villas, resorts set on spectacular beaches, over 38,000 apartments and eight iconic ‘string of pearl’ architectural landmarks housing museums, a concert hall, art gallery and major cultural offerings. “Saadiyat Island will be an idyllic postcard destination for Abu Dhabi much as Sentosa is to Singapore or Capri to Italy,” said Sheikh Sultan. 20
Lying to the North East of Abu Dhabi city and roughly equidistant between Abu Dhabi International Airport and the city centre, Saadiyat is a barrier island facing out into the Arabian Gulf,
HH Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan protecting shallow lagoons. Much of the island to the east is characterised by ecologically sensitive mangrove reserves. “The combination of Saadiyat’s natural environment and resources leaves Abu Dhabi
well positioned to become an upmarket tourism destination differentiated by its leveraging of natural assets,” explained Mubarak Al Muhairi, Director General, ADTA and Managing Director, TDIC. Saadiyat will be linked to Abu Dhabi city via two iconic causeways, each with 10-lane freeways and one of which will have provision for light rail transport. Crossing the main bridge will mean a five-minute drive from Abu Dhabi city to Saadiyat with Shahamma Town and Abu Dhabi International Airport being only a 25 kilometre drive away. “The Saadiyat Island masterplan embraces strategic transport initiatives when planning for the future. This will be an environment where the individual, not the car, will take priority, with pedestrian access and cycle paths throughout,” added Al Muhairi. “Consideration is also being given to facilities for future ferry services.” Set to be an international development showpiece, TDIC will ensure quality conservation and environmental practices are used throughout Saadiyat Island’s development. “Saadiyat Island’s tourism offering will be expansive,” explained Al Muhairi. “In just one day on the island, visitors can explore and experience nature’s blessings. They can plunge into the warm Arabian Gulf waters, stroll along pristine shores or sail out for a day’s fishing to return to the vibrancy of beach resorts or the tranquility of eco-hideaways

and sensational sunsets. “Saadiyat’s tourism offering will enable visitors to spend literally weeks on the island with something different to do every day.” Saadiyat Island will be home to the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi - at 30,000 square feet, the world’s largest Guggenheim contemporary art museum. Saadiyat Island is being developed by the Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC), an independent public joint stock company of which Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority is the sole shareholder. TDIC’s strategy is to dispose of development land on the island to private investors who will each develop their sites in accordance with the masterplan and supporting planning regulations and design guidelines. Yas island Another huge project that the world should keep an eye in Abu Dhabi is the YAS Island, one of the largest natural islands in the area, and will be a prestigious world-class leisure destination, with mixed-use tourist attractions including beaches, entertainment, shopping, hotels, residences, golfing, equestrian facilities and motor racing. The US$40 billion project with a projected completion date for the first part of 2008 and total completion by 2014 will combine the many natural attractions of an island with the world’s most popular leisure activities. “We have taken mankind’s passion for the sea, for racing cars, shopping, golfing, and luxurious living, and designed them all into a single unique setting. Yas Island will be the only destination in the world that combines our desert and maritime traditions with the fascinations of Florida and the elegance of Monte Carlo. It will be the world’s most complete leisure destination,” according to ALDAR’s Chairman Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh. “We have been working to create a unique destination that will present Abu Dhabi to the global tourist market. Our intention is to bring together families, friends and individuals seeking January 2007
Abu Dhabi will be home to Guggenheim Museum New York-based Guggenheim Foundation will establish a world-class museum devoted to modern and contemporary art. To be called the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi (GAD), the museum, designed by internationally-acclaimed architect Frank Gehry, will position the emirate as a leading international cultural destination. At 30,000 square metres, the Abu Dhabi museum will be the only Guggenheim museum in the region and will be larger than any existing Guggenheim worldwide. The museum is expected to be constructed within five years. The museum will form its own major collection of contemporary art and will also exhibit masterworks from the Guggenheim Foundation’s global collections. The museum will be built in the Cultural District of Saadiyat Island – a natural island lying 500 metres offshore the UAE capital which is being transformed into an international tourism destination. The Cultural District will also be home to a national museum, classical art museum, maritime museum, performing arts centre and an expansive arts centre park. The project is the determination of the Abu Dhabi Government to create a world-class cultural destination for its residents and visitors. “It also demonstrates the commitment of UAE President and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to demonstrably establish this emirate as a quality destination of international standing, one capable of achieving and maintaining relationships with the very highest calibre of global partners,” said HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and member of the Executive Council. Thomas Krens, Director of the Guggenheim Foundation, said the signing reflects the visionary spirit and forward-looking approach that are the Guggenheim’s hallmarks. “Our commitment to international communication and global cultural exchange - realised through our museums, collections, and programmes - is inclusive. The Guggenheim implicitly regards all contemporary cultures and their traditions as potential partners in the field of aesthetic discourse - we are both respectful of difference and excited by it.” William Mack, Chairman of the Guggenheim Foundation, led a delegation of Guggenheim trustees to Abu Dhabi for the project launch. He said: “It is with a keen sense of historical precedent and with an abiding commitment to cultural exchange as a bridge to international understanding that the Guggenheim Foundation enters into this agreement to establish a Guggenheim museum in Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi’s Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC), which manages the authority’s tourism assets, will own the museum. The Guggenheim Foundation will establish and manage the museum’s programme, which will include collection development, exhibitions and educational initiatives. The MOU was signed on behalf of Abu Dhabi by His Highness Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) and TDIC, and Thomas Krens. “Abu Dhabi’s museum will join a highly exclusive Guggenheim museum network which currently includes New York, Venice in Italy, Bilbao in Spain, Berlin in Germany and Las Vegas.

options of entertainment, excitement, nature and peace in one location,” said CEO Ronald Barrott. Shopping will be one of the key attractions, with retail areas occupying a staggering 300,000 square metres. Ferrari World will be a major highlight, through ALDAR’s rights to a Ferrarithemed park, museum and theatre. These attractions are linked to a top quality motor race track on which visitors can experience the thrill of the exclusive Ferrari Driving School (Pilota Ferrari), kart track and dune buggies. They can also test the limits of their own cars under professional instruction. More peacefully, located on the island will be two major marinas and yachting facilities; resort hotels, lagoon hotels and hotel apartments; a water park, three golf courses, a polo field and equestrian centre, restaurants and cafes, and mixed type residences. Plans are underway to adapt sensitive and beautiful parts of the island into conservation areas. A number of very select individual homes will

also be made available on the island. The development will feature attractions and activities that will appeal, entertain and retain the interest of people of all age groups and nationalities. “We expect that majority of visitors to Yas Island will stay for at least seven to 10 days. The many pleasures of this island are guaranteed to be an overwhelming, enjoyable and lifetime experience for everyone,” added Barrott. Yas Island, spread over an impressive area of 2,500 hectares, is roughly one third the size of the island of Abu Dhabi, and features a beach front shoreline of approximately 32 kms. Infrastructure will be developed around the Yas Island project in advance and to the operational benefit of the capital city. A new 10-lane highway will connect Yas Island to the new Abu Dhabi International Airport, the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway, and the city of Abu Dhabi at Mina Port. Yas Island will also connect to ALDAR’s signature Al Raha Beach development.
Yas Island is easily accessible by road, air and water. International visitors flying into Abu Dhabi will be able to see the bright glow of the red Ferrari World roof from the air, and can reach Yas Island within minutes of disembarking. Just ten minutes from Abu Dhabi International Airport and a similar distance from ALDAR’s Al Raha Beach, Yas Island is located at the gateway to Abu Dhabi, and will target the 1.6 billion catchment area located within six hours flying time to the UAE. These new development signals Abu Dhabi’s intent to broaden its tourism base by using the natural advantages it holds to attract a diverse range of visitors from the business traveler to long stay family holiday makers. It’s a clear indication that the emirate is not simply relying on its natural assets but is constructing man made attractions that will position the emirate as a unique destination in the global tourism market. Truly, the jewel wanting to be discovered is now found.

Etihad Airways
Flying High on Guest-Centered Service Delivery Strategy By Flor B. Pamintuan

E
tihad Airway’s, the national airline of the UAE, is changing the way people see the world. Created in 2003 by Emiri decree, Etihad Airways now flies to 37 destinations, from New York and London to Casablanca and Jarkarta. Evidence of rapid growth is seen in the delivery of Etihad’s new aircraft; an average of one plane every month for the last 12 months. Currently, the fleet is composed of 24 aircraft, and there are plans of bringing another 10 this year. Etihad’s focus is on doing things differently, says Geert W. Boven, Executive Vice President, Sales & Service, Etihad Airways: “We are bringing warmth and hospitality back to aviation. We are challenging the traditional way in which airlines operate; we are putting the Guest first.” Etihad Airway’s has three Guest Zones – the Diamond Zone (First Class), the Pearl Zone (Business Class) and the Coral Zone (Economy Class). Each Zone provides relaxed unhurried service, and each Guest is given the opportunity to enjoy some of the best things in life from around the world. The Diamond Zone is luxurious and spacious and offers top-of-the-range service and facilities. The seat transforms into a 6’1” 180 degrees flat bed with 23” personal LCD video screen, individual reading light and magazine rack. It has laptop power supply, two USB ports, one RCA jack, one RJ45 jack and a built-in massage facility. The Pearl Zone provides superior facilities suited to the business traveler and recently won international acclaim for its flatbed - World’s

Leading Flatbed Seat award last year at the 13th World Travel Awards – among other features and benefits. The Coral Zone seats in a 2-4-2 configuration and the seats recline by 30 degrees off vertical and seat pitch ranges between 31” to 32”. It has 10.4” touch screen LCD monitor and seats have a wide
Geert W. Boven, EVP, Sales & Service seat bottom that moves forward when reclined, as well as an adjustable footrest and headrest, allowing guests to sit back and relax. Between July and September last year, one million guests flew with Etihad, and the airline is
expecting four million Guests this year. “Abu Dhabi has some substantial traffic on its own, and being the capital of the UAE, many business travelers come to UAE and the capital. The Abu Dhabi government is very much concentrating on bringing tourists to this area, making it a tourist destination and also concentrating on the MICE business, meetings, conference and business, so we try to bring additional value to Abu Dhabi,” explained Boven. He added that the announcement of Abu Dhabi’s new Guggenheim Museum, to be built on Saadiyat Island, will bring additional value to Abu Dhabi and will make the city not only a tourist destination and financial center, but also one of culture. To ensure that Guests are provided superior service, Etihad Airways recruits the best talent in the industry, specifically individuals who are committed to providing the highest levels of service to its Guests. The Etihad family consists of more than 3,500 employees, across 95 nationalities – all speaking in their respective languages. “It’s a very multi-cultural environment,” says Boven. “We bring a very international atmosphere to the airline. We want to show that we’re not only a Middle Eastern airline but very much internationally focussed.” What makes Etihad Airways unique and different from the other airlines is Etihad Guest, a loyalty programme designed exclusively around the Guests. The programme is more flexible, has fewer
29
restrictions and is more rewarding. Guests can enjoy immediate rewards, there are no blackout dates and seats are available at any time “There is complete flexibility in our programme. Unlike the traditional programme where there is a reserved amount of seats available, Etihad Guest gives whatever seat is available even if it’s the last single seat. You have complete control over how much value you generate for your miles,” said Peter Baumgartner, Acting Executive Vice President, Marketing, Etihad Airways. Etihad Airways has also partnered with one of the world’s largest and well-known banks, HSBC, to launch the co-branded credit card for members of Etihad Guest. By December of 2006, Etihad Guest reached 65,000 members and the numbers are still growing.
30
“Etihad Guest has exceeded our expectations. Part of the success is that we have a program that is different from the traditional established airline so again, in line with our vision to change the airline standards, we have done that successfully,” added Baumgartner. The airline also launched Etihad Holidays in 2004 to function as a strategic business unit and market its own unique range of holidays and leisure products both and outbound from the UAE. “Etihad Holidays is a vehicle to promote Abu Dhabi as a tourist destination. We very much need Etihad Holidays to promote stop-over packages, like for guests traveling from Europe via Abu Dhabi to the Far East. We also develop holiday packages for the surrounding countries where we are flying,” said Nick Wood, General Manager, Etihad
Holidays. The airline also has a cargo division, Etihad Crystal Cargo, launched in September 2004, which offers an expanding network of cargo destinations on scheduled and charter flights. “Etihad Crystal Cargo is a substantial part of our operations. We have 11 dedicated cargo routes which bring a considerable amount of cargo into Abu Dhabi. We are also looking at expanding our operations further in markets like China, India and Africa,” added Rupert Batstone, Acting VP Cargo, Etihad Airways. The opening of more routes, delivery of new aircraft, and increasing number of Guests all point in one direction – Etihad is flying high. Etihad is truly changing the way people see the world.

ho says all you can do in the wintertime is stay inside, light a fire and curl up with a good book? Here are eight destinations that really heat up when the weather turns cold. Whistler, British Columbia – What could make a resort that already boasts more ski terrain than any other vacation spot in North America seem even better? How about the chance to get a sneak preview at some of the slopes you’ll be seeing on TV during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games? Whistler is a small village with big city amenities; there are beds for more than 40,000

Venice, Italy – Although it’s normally considered a spring or summer destination, the most exciting time of the year in Venice is just before Ash Wednesday when Carnevale takes place. During this 10-day period the entire city becomes an open-air tribute to the style and elegance of the 18th century with concerts, parties and cultural events happening non-stop. Visitors dressed in elaborate costumes and beautiful hand-painted masks fill the piazzas and cafés, sipping espresso to ward off the chilly weather. One of the premier attractions is the Doge’s Ball, a glamorous event held in a 15-century palace beside the Grand Canal. Whether or not you attend the balls and expensive parties, the thrill of simply wandering the streets beside kings, queens and court jesters or sharing a table in St. Mark’s Plaza with a nobleman and his lady makes for an unforgettable experience.

one spot while others cruise the various hotels, resorts and casinos lining the 22-mile-long lake. Wintertime activities include skiing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing among others, and at the end of the day there are live shows, casino gambling and a fine selection of restaurants. One of the best reasons to visit Lake Tahoe, though, may be the lake itself with its crystal-clear water and amazing view of the Sierra Nevada in the background. Set aside a few moments of your vacation for doing nothing but soaking up the scenery. Created from over 15,000 tons of ice and snow, the Ice Hotel QuebecCanada promises its guests an unforgettable experience. The hotel was inspired by a similar attraction in Sweden and features 21 rooms, 13 theme suites, a bar, two art galleries, a chapel and a reception room capable of hosting over 400 bundled-up guests. Visitors can either tour the property or stay overnight and enjoy activities such as ice skating, dog sledding and

Sometimes referred to as The Jewel of the Alps, Innsbruck is a wondrous collection of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture with a Tyrolean charm which is even more beautiful under a blanket of snow. Visitors can stroll the medieval streets, tour castles and cathedrals or just sit inside a café and watch the snow fall while enjoying coffee and homemade strudel. For more information: www. innsbruck-tourism.at Park City, Utah – It would be unfair to label Park City a ski resort. Instead, think of it as a town
filled with fantastic restaurants and nightspots, luxurious hotels, and a nonstop stream of festivals and special events which also happens to offer some exceptional skiing. Art openings and theatre performances give visitors a chance to warm up and recover from their outdoor activities and the city also hosts numerous film series in addition to its big draw, the annual Sundance Film Festival. For more information: www.parkcityinfo.com Snowmass Village, Colorado – With four separate mountain peaks and over 3000 acres of skiing and snowboarding terrain, Snowmass Village is sheer heaven for winter athletes. Over half of the 83 trails are geared toward intermediate skiers but beginners and experts will find plenty to suit their liking as well. The village’s overall feel is rustic and unpretentious---the resident population is only 1,667 laid-back souls---and locals go out of their way to make visitors feel right at home. With 32 restaurants and bars there’s never a shortage of apres-ski options but those craving an extra dose of glitz and glamour can make the short trip to Aspen, a mere ten miles down the road. Zermatt, Switzerland – One glimpse of this resort perched at the base of the majestic Matterhorn is enough to show why it’s one of the most popular winter destinations in all of Europe. The village is car-free with horsedrawn carriages and alpine cable cars being the main alternatives to walking, meaning you won’t have to dodge traffic as you wander the streets browsing through one stylish boutique after another. Hiking and skiing are the favorite daytime activities while at night visitors can choose from an assortment of lively pubs and restaurants serving up German, Austrian and Swiss delicacies. Adventurous souls may want to try their hand at heli-skiing, combining a breathtaking helicopter ride with an afternoon of world-class skiing.

It is hard to describe a cruise down the Nile when so much has been written about it. But you don’t have to do the usual tourist circuit visiting ancient temples. Anjana Das finds out a different way to course this enchanting river. 40

H
alf of it is imagined the other half is in the heart, like all things Egyptian. I waited for a long while to find someone to cruise down the Nile with. In the end I packed my bags and left for the train station alone, and there began my journey. Egypt’s largest train station at Ramses square can be described as a moveable feast to the eyes. Not very different from any other in India, except for the imposing shadow of Ramses II (3,200 years old) standing in silence over the milling crowds. A pyramid of bright orange carrots heaped on a donkey cart was being manoeuvred between a Peugeot taxi and a cyclist carrying a load of fresh bread. Street hawkers selling everything from boxes of tissue to ‘imported’ watches kept a watchful eye for cops, as men from the clothes stall sat by the pavement laughing over a cup of black tea. Inside the train station, a line of soldiers in uniform stood by the ticket counter, going home for their much-longed-for leave. A group of tourists were being given their last briefing of the day by their guide, wake up call for tomorrow on the train. As the train whistled its way down south
to Luxor, buildings gave way to fields of corn and sugarcane. Egypt’s cultivable land lies along a narrow fertile strip on both sides of the Nile, as far as the waters can reach. It makes up less than 5% of the country. The rest of the 95% remains inhospitable deserts and mountains. We rolled into the kingdom of the Pharaohs as the sun rose to a glorious morning behind the Hatshepsut temple. Luxor used to be the capital, then. I hailed a taxi from the train station that took me along the Nile away from where most of the ships were moored. There are close to 300 ships catering to every category and budget, cruising between Luxor and Aswan on the Nile. They follow a fixed itinerary of 4 nights from Luxor to Aswan or 3 nights on the return journey, with guided tours covering all the main monuments along the way. While this is what majority of the 6 million tourists to Egypt prefer to do, there are several other possibilities. Fishing trips on the Lake Nasser are conducted during the months of April/ May and October/ November but is restricted to a handful of tour companies. Few others arrange private sailboats to

cruise the river for a more rustic experience but it is largely by word of mouth. Guarded from view, the shaded path led down to a garden by the riverside where the dahabeya, El Bey was lounging. Dahabeyas of former times used two sails, one on either end of the boat and were largely dependent on the current or the wind to reach its passengers to their destinations. In times of crises, the tug boat that always followed behind, would be used. Resting my valise under the thick canopy of trees I felt like the 70’s traveller, Marianne Brocklehurst. We would be sailing south against the flow of the Nile. That meant that the usual four days itinerary to Aswan would be stretched out into a more leisurely week-long voyage. Our quarter was a far cry from the basic accommodation past voyagers found themselves

in. The cabins with ensuite bath may have been smaller but they felt warm and cosy. There was hot water, a library with board games and music. The anteroom was furnished in dark brown and rich with the smell of polished wood. Sun filtered in through the lattices of the mashrabiya windows making patterns on the wooden floor. I walked up to the canopied sun deck and scanned the horizon. Between the tall reeds of papyrus that grew on the shallow edges was a small canoe. A boy stood fishing on it. Egyptian life has always been entwined around the Nile, whether it is making a living out of it, farming along it, drinking from it, washing in it, some even building their homes on it, like the houseboats afloat on the Nile in Cairo. There was one temple among the others on the west bank of the Nile, that I did not want to miss – the mortuary temple of Medinet Habu. It
is not part of the usual tourist’s itinerary, by late afternoon there was hardly a soul. I could spend all evening walking through the courtyards admiring the deeply cut hieroglyphics, on the walls and ceilings for which it is noted. Some of the original colours including a brilliant blue, are still visible; defying time and natural calamities (an earthquake in 27 BC destroyed a part of it). Suddenly out of the shadows sprung a figure hailing me down, “Madam, I show you antiquity.” I understood he was offering his guiding services ‘for free’ and eventually he did take me around to see some of the most magnificent reliefs, I could have easily missed. In return I offered him the customary baksheesh. Wandering the tree-lined promenade by the corniche, I found a café that served shisha with coca cola and sprite flavors, in addition to the usual apple and mint. “We get all kinds of people here,”
Sun deck on the El Bey clarified the chap serving at the coffee shop when I pointed to the ‘exotic’ list on his menu. I asked if he knew of anyone who did a hot-air balloon trip over Luxor by night. The next one was at dawn the following morning. I did some homework to find the boat that would ferry us across the river to the west bank. And next morning we were a van load of excited people bumping along the short ride to the liftoff point, in the middle of a farm. The next hour offered a perspective that I would never see, again. From high above, the mountains formed a spectacular backdrop to the Hatshepsut temple cradled in its basin. Sprawling temple complexes that took half a day to tour, looked impossibly miniscule. Canals snaked through green farm lands nourishing them with water. The worker’s dwellings were built over and among the ruins of ancient tombs, the present merging with the past. The rising sun cast long shadows over the peasants working in the fields. They looked up and waved and we waved back. Later that afternoon, as we set sail I settled into the wicker chair on the deck and wondered how different life could have been, between then and now. I remembered an article about women in ancient Egypt, written by James C. Thompson based on interpretations of hieroglyphics and other manuscripts. ‘One document shows an enterprising woman purchasing a slave for 400 deben,’ he writes. ‘She paid half in clothing and borrowed the rest from her neighbours. It is likely the woman expected to be able to repay the loan by renting out the slave. Another time, a sort of receipt was found showing that one woman received several garments, a bull and sixteen goats as payment for 27 days work by her slave. the part-time maid as we know now ! How different, yet how so similar, I thought as I munched on the aish and grilled fish – the delicious Nile perch stuffed with minced garlic, thyme and cumin. A French friend, who lived in Cairo, always came back from his frequent Luxor trips with bags of aish.
“Ohh they are different,” he used to exclaim. And so they were. The wheat is kneaded with yeast and left in the hot sun to ferment. This sour dough is then divided into balls and baked in half open hearths. What comes out is a delicious, puffed bread eaten best with tagins and salads. Our halts on the way took us past many magnificent edifices each one greater than the other in splendour. But it was the Philae temple that was the most captivating. Standing alone on an island surrounded by rocky boulders it has more of a Greek or Ptolemic influence than the Pharaonic. It was built by kings of much later dynasties who came to rule from Macedonia. Wandering the ruins I came upon a small café with an amusing sign board outside that said : ‘Men are born free till getting married.’ I made some good bargain, or thought I did, for African masks at a shop in Philae and carried it all the way back home. It adorned my living room till recently when a friend made some remarks about masks bringing in negative energy. I and the other four other couples on the boat shared suppers together, exchanged conversations about life and sat countless hours gazing at the rural life that went by. I filled the pages of my diaries and thought about the pages of untold stories. Of the young sailor who spoke of his wish to have electricity in his house in the village. Of the cook on the small boat who offered to bake fresh bread on the morning I was returning. Of the old Nubian at the temple, who sat all day trying to sell his limestone slabs to tourists. Like me, many have coursed the Nile and there will be many more who dare to explore Egypt in unique ways. But each time is unlike the other, revealing a new aspect you never knew existed. I will come back to Egypt, I promised myself.

The Aztec heart of
Mexico City still beats By Habeeb Salloum
The cradle of North American civilization, it is the country’s dynamic, cultural, political and commercial core. At every turn, the city displays remains of Aztec civilization, superb colonial buildings and modern skyscrapers. Its archaeological sites, worldfamous museums, grand shopping plazas, ďŹ ne restaurants and many cultural attractions make it an exciting city vibrating with life.

“Look! It must be one of the most breathtaking sights in the world!” Our guide motioned with his hand at the panorama of Mexico City’s huge Plaza de la Constitution, better known as the Zócalo. I looked in astonishment at the sweeping vista before us. From our vantage point, the roof top restaurant of the Hotel Majestic, the gigantic square before us, teeming with life and hugged by historic buildings, was a stunning picture of the heart of Mexico. The womb, which gave birth to the country, the Zócalo, is the second largest square in the world. It is a remarkable showplace of the history of this highest city, geographically, on the North American continent - sitting in the clouds 2200 m (7,350 ft) high. Built atop the ruins of the Aztecs’ main temple complex, the Zócalo has witnessed a continuum of historic development since it was first settled by the Aztecs in 1321 A.D. On this site, they developed

the heart of their majestic capital, Tenochtitlán. When Cortes, the Spanish conqueror, in 1519, first set eyes on this city of 300,000, larger than any contemporary urban centre in Europe with more than 80 palaces and temples, he was dazzled. After the Spanish conquest, all these structures were razed and from their stones a new city was built around the Square. The structures were erected on the exact sites and used for the same functions as the demolished buildings of the Aztecs, and beyond them the city grew - the part of Mexico City, known today as ‘Centro Historico’, filled with colonial buildings and historic sites. The small colonial town grew and has evolved until today it is one of the world’s great capitals and the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Western Hemisphere. The builders of that first colonial town in the Americas, in their wildest dreams, would never have visualized today’s city of some 24 million
(some say 30 million), the largest city on earth and home of some one third of Mexico’s 110 million inhabitants. The cradle of North American civilization, it is the country’s dynamic, cultural, political and commercial core. At every turn, the city displays remains of Aztec civilization, superb colonial buildings and modern skyscrapers. Its archaeological sites, world-famous museums, grand shopping plazas, fine restaurants and many cultural attractions make it an exciting city vibrating with life. Joining the mass of humanity in the Zócalo, we began our exploration of the bordering grand historic buildings. From the west side of the Square, with its countless stores, dominated by jewellery outlets, we crossed to the northern edge to examine the mammoth Metropolitan Cathedral. The largest church in all of Latin America, it was built atop the

remains of an Aztec pyramid. Begun in the late 16th century, it took 250 years to complete - in the process becoming a mosaic of architectural designs. These are accented by the adjoining parish church, El Sagrario, built in 1749 in churrigueresque (a type of baroque) style. We entered the immense house of the One God, who had overwhelmed and totally destroyed the Aztec gods, to find that the Cathedral had been totally renovated. As we walked around, what struck me profoundly was the gold, seemingly everywhere. It was as if the renowned Aztec gold had changed allegiance, from temples to churches. But had it? Even the sinking of the Cathedral had been somewhat arrested. Most of the early Mexican churches are sinking into the spongy soil on which Mexico City is built. Perhaps, Montezuma and Quetzalcoatl have not yet been totally defeated.

Bellas Artes Palace at Mexico City’s downtown
From the Cathedral we rambled to the National Palace on the east side of the Square. Occupying the exact site of Montezuma’s former palace, it is one of the oldest government seats in the world, still housing the President’s office and the Ministry of Finance. The only survivor of 17th century architecture, it was originally built in 1693. We walked up the stairs to view the renowned Diego Rivera Murals, blazing the inner hallways of the building. Truly breathtaking, they depict five centuries of Mexican history. Rivera worked for six years to complete these vibrant frescoes that many art experts consider to be his greatest work. Very impressive in their grandeur, they are well worth a visit by every tourist who travels to Mexico City. We ended our tour at the Temple Mayor archaeological site at the northeast corner of the Zócalo. Here was the heart of the great city of Tenochtitlán - the main ceremonial pyramid of
that Aztec city. It was discovered in 1978 when electrical workers unearthed an eight-ton stone disk carving of the Aztec goddess Coyolxauhqui. Two square city blocks have been excavated but work is continuing. The most recent discovery was two large chambers containing over 61 m (200 ft) of decorative carvings. In addition to the remains uncovered on the site, 3,000 unearthed artefacts are on display at the excellent nearby museum. As we walked away from the Aztec remains to join the milling masses crowding the Zócalo, I thought of Mexico’s indigenous peoples, Conquistadors and their mixed descendants who are today’s Mexicans. As if reading my thoughts, our guide commented, “Look around you! Our people have absorbed many races from Aztecs and Spaniards to many other Europeans and peoples from other lands. These faces and this Square,

“Madam Butterfly” comes to Sharjah 62
P
uccini’s emotionally-charged musical score, Madam Butterfly was staged for the first time in Sharjah to a packed house at Coral Beach Resort, Sharjah on December 7, 2006. Organised under the Kind Patronage of H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Faisal Al Qassimi, the Grand Opera Gala was performed by European Chamber Opera (ECHO), one of Europe’s bestknown opera production companies. Sponsored by Coral International Hotels, Resorts & Spas and hosted by Coral Beach Resort, Sharjah, the legendary drama turned out to be as vocally rich and subtle as it was visually intense. “We performed Madam Butterfly after nearly seven years and it was definitely a huge honour to bring it to Sharjah, which is considered the Cultural Capital of the Middle East. Different from most operas, Madam Butterfly is one of the most frequently produced operas in the entire repertory. A haunting portrayal of the dangers of misguided love, it produces an effect at once intimate and overwhelming,” said Stefan Paul Sanchez, Artistic Director, ECHO. ECHO’s productions are sought-after by major theatres, historic venues and educational January 2007
institutions throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East. “We were truly proud to host this event. Until three years back Opera had never been performed in Sharjah. We were the first one to organize it in the city, and owing to its huge success it’s become an annual event in our calendar,” said Emad Jawad Hussein, General Manager, Coral Beach Resort, Sharjah. Accompanied by five accomplished artistes (Sandra Porter, Anja Rossav, Robert Millner, Wai-Yin Lee and John Watts), Stefan Paul Sanchez created a memorable evening. The rich and luscious Puccini scores were well complemented with some brilliant performances. Best of all, the supporting parts were as well cast as the central characters. The setup and costumes were equally outstanding. The second half of the concert included some of world’s most popular scores such as Marriage of Figaro by Mozart, Rigoletto by Verdi and Carmen by Bizet followed by some light musical numbers. The support sponsors for this beautiful event were Manafa LLC, Guerlain Paris, United Arab Bank, Al Khalidiah Tourism, Golden Beans, Masafi, Gibca Air-Conditioning and Orient Irrigation Services. 63

The innovative watch & Jewellery brand, Piaget, once again established itself as a pioneer in adding glamour and beauty to the world of luxury. Hollywood star, Eva Longoria of the Desperate Housewives fame was recently seen sporting the new Limelight Party Disco Ball creations at the 40th Annual Country Music Awards. Having worked closely with Piaget earlier, on the occasion of the 2006 Emmy Awards to select the Waterfall Motif Earrings and Cascade Manchette Bracelet to match Eva’s stunning evening gown. No matter what the occasion, Piaget has always found the perfect piece of hot couture accessory to make Eva look sensational. While Piaget is widely regarded as one of the world’s finest watchmakers, its new diamond jewelry collections have been stealing the show at several red carpet events, taking centre stage with some of the most famous Hollywood superstars. One of its creations, which saw a lot of success with watch connoisseurs, is the Limelight Party Disco Ball watch, which is inspired by the legendary disco balls of the 1970’s. The watch’s case and dial are faceted polished white paved with 114 brilliant-cut diamonds (approx. 2.1 carats). This half sphere conceals a Piaget 56P quartz movement. Its black satin strap is adorned with a white gold folding clasp set with 10 diamonds. The brand’s proudest moment was when its was awarded the winning prize in the Ladies’ Jewellry Watch category at the Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix that took place in the Grand Theatre recently. Piaget was further voted by the Vogue Joyas Spain magazine as the ‘Most Beautiful Jewellery watch of 2006’, an honour for which the brand will soon claim its prize in Madrid.

I tried Lobster Thermidor, Grilled Lobster, Paella with Seafood and the Hammour Fillet with Dill Sauce. The lobster is perfectly cooked, not too firm, but tender to the taste. The grilled lobster’s freshness and juiciness are still present although grilled. The hammour fish and the dill sauce that is very flavourful add richness to the freshness of the fish. The Shrimp Tandori is mild in taste and the Fish Broquette is well cooked. In short, all the ingredients are fresh, the flavors Diane, the Belly Dancer
S
o much has been written about Abu Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Battuta, also known as Shams ad-Din. His travels and side-excursions over a period of almost thirty years cover some 73,000 miles (117,000 km). Ibn Battuta was the only medieval traveller who has visited almost the entirety of the known Islamic world, extending also to present-day Pakistan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia and China. All of Ibn Battuta’s travels were well documented and in his travels, he definitely learned about the food from the different places that he visited. And this concept was adopted by the Marakesh Restaurant in Millennium Hotel in Abu Dhabi. A brainchild of Adnan Dayoub, Food and Beverage Manager, Ibn Battuta is featured every Monday night at Marakesh Restaurant where a variety of dishes from countries Ibn Battuta traveled to and from was prepared. Marakesh Restaurant which opened in 2002 is located at the second floor of the Millennium Hotel and only opens in the evening. In the entrance, you’ll find authentic Moroccan lamps, low cushion seats, wood carvings, boxes, and other authentic Moroccan crafts. The traditional Moroccan door with stained glasses will catch your attention. But the real treasure is in the dimly lit room inside with an interior that provides lots of authentic atmosphere. The interior has a very genuine Moroccan décor - the tiles, the ceiling, the mirrors, the window shape walls, and even the dinnerware. Nevine Albert, Director of Public Relations & Communications of Millennium Hotel, revealed that all decorations and cutlery were imported from Morocco and the hotel’s General Manager, Moine Kandil, personally picked them. As you enter the restaurant, the wait staff

dressed in Moroccan-inspired costume will greet you with a warm welcome. Milad Anwar, the restaurant manager, politely guided us to our table and offered us a drink. I tried a mixture of orange and carrot juice. The Ibn Battuta night featured seafood cuisine. For the appetizer, the selections are plenty – smoked salmon, smoked shrimps with artichoke, spicy calamari, steamed lobster, fresh salmon, shrimp cocktail and a salmon and crab sushi. I tried smoked salmon (which is my favorite), the spicy calamari, the lobster and the sushi. The appetizers alone will make
Chef Rachida you full and everything tastes fresh. The cool and fresh salad section has hummus, fresh shrimps, tabbouleh, vine leaves, eggplant, olives, cucumber, tomato and green pepper and other local selections. The soup is a choice between crème seafood soup and seafood soup with tomato. I sampled crème seafood soup and although it’s not very creamy, the taste is rich but not heavy. On to the main course and you need to select from a row of 16 different dishes placed on top of a long table. Marakesh Restaurant is open from 10 pm till 4 am so there are plenty of reasons to sample the food. During our visit, the selections are Thai Calamari, Shrimp Tandori, Lobster Thermidor, Grilled Salmon with Wasabi Butter Sauce, Shrimps in Provencal
are just right, and the portions are proper (not too big). Chef Rachida with her staff really prepared the dishes well. And don’t forget the loads of desserts – crème caramel, chocolate tart, chocolate mousse, fresh fruits, raspberry mousse, mango mousse and a whole lot more. Finishing off the meal with some Moroccan tea (served in a traditional coffee pot) made from fresh mint leaves is highly recommended. The buffet dinner costs AED160++ per person and included house beverages. Marakesh Restaurant has other themed-nights like Arabic and Moroccan nights during Tuesdays and Saturdays, Salsa night during Sundays and special set and ala carte menu on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Besides the excellent food, Marakesh Restaurant is known for its entertainment. The Moroccan band plays every night and part of the programme is Sabrine, the famous singer and Diane, the belly dancer. The best times to visit the restaurant is after 10 pm when you want to relax and enjoy the music of Sabrine, the famous singer and watch Diane, the belly dancer as she enchants the guests with her rhythmic swaying and athletic grace. Diane belted out a Lebanese song titled “Ala Dalouna” during the evening and the dining place was filled with fun, with the diners singing and clapping with her. It was very entertaining and everyone was having a great time. A very relaxing and exhilarating night. To say the mood was festive is an understatement when dining at Marakesh Restaurant during the Ibn Battuta nights. It was a pleasant and unforgettable first encounter. This place is such a great escape from the busy street and the fussy cuisine that’s popping up all over. – Flor B. Pamintuan 67

B
ab Al Shams Resort and Spa is well known in the region for its uniquely serene ambience created by its architecture, its impressive giant pots and its land and waterscaping. While its quality restaurants, characteristically Arabian-styled accommodation and the pleasantness of its staff place it high on the tourist’s ’must see’ list, it also houses a delightful spa within its walls. The Satori Spa has always been an integral feature of the resort, but if you tire of convalescing by the pool, dozing in front of the open-air fire, or being entertained at the Al Hadeerah Fort, it is yet another aspect a supremely relaxing stay that one comes to expect from Bab Al Shams. The design of the spa is in total keeping with the other interiors of the resort space with its smooth, sandycoloured walls, hefty pillars and subtle Arabian-style multicoloured lamps which gently illuminate the dark corners, all harmoniously blending the traditional with the modern. This interior ambience lends itself perfectly to the relaxing atmosphere necessary to get the greatest benefit from your massage experience. Once you enter the Satori Spa your welcome is assured, and you are offered an extensive menu of treatments to choose, whether you want a facial, foot or a full body massage. There are also a range of Satori Signature treatments which include a dry acupressure massage, an after sun cooling treatment and a lemon ‘lustrous hair’ treatment. If you’re unsure exactly which you want, you can simply choose from a relaxing, revitalising or de-stressing massage and let the trained therapists and masseurs take care of your every need. Having chosen your treatment - I chose the de-stressing massage - your masseur leads you down a corridor past various treatment rooms with individual massage tables as well as rooms with two single tables so couples can share the experience. With gentle and relaxing new world music playing in the background your treatment begins. The de-stress massage concentrates on the removal of tension from the spinal area, from the lower back up to the shoulders, so for most of the session the masseur is manipulating the back muscles. Using essential oils containing lavender, coconut, citrus and ylangylang, the treatment is as much an aromatherapy experience as a thorough penetrating massage, but the masseur is constantly attentive to the amount of pressure and potential discomfort to the client. One particularly pleasant element of the de-stressing massage takes place when you are lying on your back. The masseur mixes essences of peppermint, eucalyptus and teatree and holds it above your nose to help clear the respiratory passages before continuing to massage the arms and legs. When the massage is over, you are allowed to rest for a while in the treatment room before dressing and returning to the serenity of the resort landscape. Although I did feel as if there was a little excess oil on my skin after the massage and was not advised to shower before replacing my clothes, I did feel very much de-stressed, rather sweet smelling and ready to face the late afternoon sun, poolside. These reviving, relaxing and de-stressing treatments last for around an hour – which, in my view, is still too short! – while the longest Satori Signature treatment, the Indulge, lasts 4 hours and features a choice of body scrub or massage, then an oil body wrap, blower bath, moisturizer and facial, and is accompanied by delicious and healthy herbal teas. As with all aspects of the Bab Al Shams Resort, the Satori Spa is focused on untying those knots pulled tight after long weeks of citylife tension, making it the perfect oasis within an oasis. As if looking out over the infinity pool towards drifting dunes and a fireball sunset is not exotic enough, try doing it after an hour of completely indulgent pampering. Wonderful!

Aqaar to spearhead Ajman
as niche residential and tourism destination
Ajman Investment and Development Authority (AIDA), the government body behind the development of Ajman, one of the seven states making up the United Arab Emirates, has unveiled a semi-governmental company charged with developing its burgeoning real-estate potential and its first project Ajman 1, which will herald its transformation into a niche residential and tourism destination. The vision of His Highness Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Ruler of Ajman, is to utilise the development company’s to transform the emirate into a popular world-destination for both tourism and business, by spearheading the creation of quality residential and commercial projects. “The evolution of Ajman is being driven forward by a solid foundation of government bodies and international expertise, this has lead to an intense focus on creating and delivering a quality environment in which all those living in the emirate will benefit and succeed,’ said His Highness Sheikh Ammar Bin Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Crown Prince of Ajman. Aqaar – the real-estate and property development company created in 2006 - will oversee Ajman 1’s mixed-use development. The company has partnered with Dubai-headquartered Asteco, one of the UAE’s largest property services
74
companies, to handle the project’s sales. Investors buying into the 12 freehold residential towers, which will be built on a podium structure allowing up to four storeys of car parking underneath, will have residence visas automatically issued as part of the sales process. “Ajman 1 will be the first of many projects being developed by Aqaar,” explained His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Head of Ajman Municipality and CEO, Aqaar. “This is a major step forward for Ajman. The creation of Aqaar signals a stepping up of the emirate’s economic progression, with Ajman 1 being a beacon for future growth. “Aqaar will be the driving force behind the municipality and AIDA’s progressive plans for Ajman. A solid infrastructure is being implemented that focuses strongly on road development to improve connections with neighbouring emirates. It is important to make sure that the latter elements are not overlooked or rushed, as this will only cause problems in the future. Concise planning is essential, and this is how we are operating. “Ajman 1 is symbolic of the government’s intention, under the wise leadership of the Ruler, His Highness Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, to create an alternative gateway for business and
tourism. Ajman 1 is a physical demonstration of the emirate’s renewed economic openness.” Ajman 1, which will be at the entrance of the emirate’s coast road after leaving the Coral Beach roundabout in Sharjah, will be developed in two phases, with construction due to begin in the first quarter of next year. The 72,000 square metre plot will be a seamless fusion of residential, commercial, hospitality and lifestyle elements. “The residential offering will target the mid-range segment and prices will be highly competitive. The 3,000 apartments will have quality finishes, and all will have full bathrooms and balconies. The project will fill the void that has been left with the development of so many super luxury projects that people are struggling to afford,” added Rami Dabbas, Head of RealEstate Development, Ajman Investment and Development Authority, and COO, Aqaar. Phase 2 will concentrate on the construction of a world class hotel to be managed by an international operator, one freehold commercial tower, serviced apartments and a tower for leased apartments. The UAE’s National Engineering Bureau, one of the country’s leading design consultants, is behind the Ajman 1 master plan. “Aqaar and Ajman 1 will bolster the Ajman government’s strategy of increasing business and tourism in the emirate. The UAE has the world’s fastest-growing population with a staggering increase of 75 percent in the last ten years, and Aqaar has been created to develop affordable quality projects to cater for the ever increasing demand,” added Dabbas. “An extensive feasibility study was conducted to asses the residential, tourism and commercial landscape in the UAE. The study highlighted the need for more affordable quality living and working environments. Therefore, we have formulated a solid plan to tackle the void that has appeared in these sectors as Ajman is the perfect platform to fill this gap.” Master planned to take full advantage of its proximity to Ajman’s pristine beachfront and strategically positioned only 20 minutes away from Dubai International Airport (DIA), the residential 26-32 storey towers offer a combination of studio, one, two and three bedroom apartments that will eventually be home to 6000 residents. The Ajman 1 community will benefit from gyms, swimming pools, children’s playgrounds and family barbeque areas. A technologically advanced commercial tower will form the centre point of the business offerings. State-of-the-art features have been integrated into the structure to create an efficient and comfortable work environment. The prices of the residential towers will start at around AED 330 per square foot, which compared with a majority of developments in neighbouring emirates is incredibly competitive.
New Brand Ambassadors for Baume & Mercier
Kim Basinger & Gary Sinise new brand ambassadors for Baume & Mercier After Meg Ryan and Kiefer Sutherland, the image of Baume & Mercier watchmakers will now be represented by Kim Basinger and Gary Sinise. The message, Baume & Mercier & Me, already well anchored in the brand’s history, illustrates the close ties it has built with its public around the world - a bond composed of simplicity, a taste for a particular lifestyle and shared values. Within this context, Kim Basinger and Gary Sinise have accepted the roles of brand ambassadors and were photographed by two
renowned artists - Jeff Lipsky and Black Little. All of the image rights of the celebrities and photographers have been donated to charitable organizations - environmental protection and the education of underprivileged children, two causes supported by this campaign. Baume & Mercier has demonstrated on numerous occasions the importance it places on others through fundraising sales activities and partnerships with charitable organizations. The notion of caring for others unites the
Baume & Mercier watchmaking house and the two celebrities to work together on this campaign. The Baume & Mercier Swiss watchmaking house had made luxury accessible to all thanks to a powerful claim: « Baume & Mercier & Me »… but for the benefit of others as well. A style of luxury at the service of others! Thus, the Swiss Baume & Mercier watchmaking maison has adopted a charity approach to develop this new international communication campaign: Baume & Mercier and Me. The campaign’s philosophy is focused on proximity and is conveyed by means of: A claim that is well anchored in Baume & Mercier’s history and which has contributed to creating strong and close relationships with the brand’s exclusive distribution network and end-customers alike. The choice of celebrities made by the brand to support this new campaign includes personalities that have something in common with the watchmaking house; authentic public figures displaying true human qualities who are both easily approachable and close to people. Meg Ryan and Kiefer Sutherland amply displayed the prerequisites of generosity and spontaneity for this charity campaign in 2005 and Kim Basinger and Gary Sinise will take it forward in 2006-2007. They underlined the choice of humanitarian causes - the education of underprivileged children, the fight against cancer and the protection of the environment - that this campaign wishes to serve.

The FIRST enhancements, which follow the recently unveiled overhaul of the airline’s Club World business class cabin, is yet another innovation by British Airways to constantly improve premium travel. “The Turndown Service, offers our FIRST passengers departing Dubai and Abu Dhabi the premium service of having their fully flat beds made up for them at any point during the flight – ensuring a full night of uninterrupted sleep,” said Paul Starrs, British Airways’ Commercial Manager, Middle East. “FIRST passengers can board the aircraft, put on their British Airways slippers while we take-off, then, while they change in to their sleeper suits, the cabin crew will make up their bed so passengers return to nestle down for a good night’s sleep at 35,000 feet.” The Turndown Service sees crew lay out a mattress, pillow and duvet - all dressed in Egyptian cotton – on the flat-bed, while passengers can slip into the airline’s ever-popular sleeper suit, and make
the most of updated amenity kits. The airline, which revolutionised the industry when it introduced the world’s first ‘flat bed’ - featuring individual cabins with electronicallycontrolled seats that convert to a six foot six inch bed – said the enhancements to the existing FIRST class cabin comfirms the airline’s position as the market leader in premium airline travel. “We led from the front when we introduced FIRST on board all our aircraft in 1978 and there have been a number of enhancements and improvements since,” continued Starrs. “These latest modifications raise the bar even higher and offer our premium passengers the choice of whether to sleep, work or relax at anytime during their journey in complete privacy in an onboard environment which is calm and uncluttered – luxurious, yet simple.” Starrs said the airline also plans to make further changes to the FIRST menu options and table layout, including designer crockery. British Airways currently operates 17 weekly flights to London Heathrow from Dubai and operates daily from Abu Dhabi International Airport to the UK capital’s principal airport.

Printed on high quality matt paper, From the Diplomat’s Kitchen is a collection of multi national recipes, prepared through the contribution of the diplomatic community in the United Arab Emirates, representing many countries worldwide. For those not involved in the diplomatic life, the cookbook also serves to provide an insight into the colorful cultures and wealth of tradition enjoyed by each country through the introduction of its traditional cuisine. In addition to providing an understanding into how countries’ representatives entertain in a foreign land, this cookbook is also symbolic of how the diplomatic community has grown in the United Arab Emirates. “When you leaf through the pages of this cookbook to plan your own dinner party menus, you can derive a greater pleasure from the knowledge that all the money you have spent to buy the book has gone towards educating the needy”, said Thomas van Opstal, General Manager of the Sheraton Dubai Creek. Conferences and Incentives Tourism in Cyprus
The three lucky winners of hotel stays in Cyprus with Mr Vassilis Theocharides Cyprus Tourism Organisation’s Middle East and Arabian Gulf Office in Dubai organized a press conference in Murooj Rotana Hotel, Dubai, dealing with the subject: Conferences and Incentives Tourism in Cyprus. MICE and Corporate Business executives of major travel agencies, event organizers of leading companies and media representatives attended the press conference which focused on the new developments in the MICE sector in Cyprus. As a destination, Cyprus has emerged in the business tourism market in the past three decades, after having a head-start of thousands of years. The exchange of ideas, cultural elements January 2007
and mentality began in the ancient times. Dubbed “the jewel of the Mediterranean”, the island where the ancient goddess of beauty and love – Venus or Aphrodite emerged through the foam of the Paphos sea waves, has a special connection with myth. Scientists and scholars are currently in the process of verifying findings that lead to whether Cyprus used to be the lost mythical city of Atlantis. A unique combination of history, legend and cultural heritage that spans from the Stone Age to the Copper Age, from Medieval times to Byzantine times and Ottoman rule, Cyprus is a myth by itself. Boasting an average of 360 days of sunshine per year and all-year-round magnificent weather, coupled with its position between three continents, ease of accessibility, warm hospitality, delicious food, breathtaking landscapes, wealthy and legendary heritage, safety, luxurious facilities and most of all professionalism, in a compact size where the combination of all above can be experienced in a couple of days, Cyprus has it all to make any type of business meeting an unforgettable experience. Cyprus is one of only a few places on the planet, where you can conveniently enjoy downhill skiing and swimming in the sea on the same day without having to travel hundreds of miles. Within a five minute distance by car from
many luscious sandy beaches you can reach mountain areas. From forests up in the heart of Troodos that include mystic and refreshing waterfalls and cedar trees to citrus tree orchards or bush-like areas along the coast or fields that span as far as the eye can see. Water in the sea is so clear that you can see the pebbles in the water from a cliff 30m high. A visit to Cyprus will confirm the high standard of facilities. Due to the fact that the island has long being a holiday destination, the tourism industry has developed dramatically – it is the one of the major contributors to the country’s GDP. There are plenty and excellent hotel facilities that cater from holiday only to business hotels or a combination of both. The rating of hotels is above world average which is usually a pleasant surprise to visitors. There are approximately 350 conference rooms available island-wide, offering 30.000 person seating capacity. As far as conference centers are concerned, Nicosia has also the Cyprus Conference Center – with 1.200 person seating capacity – and the State Fairs Conference Center with similar capacity. With three (3) world-class golf courses and about 30 awardwinning luxury spas, all of which are part of luxurious resorts, Cyprus is climbing fast to the preferred list of well-being destinations.

The resort, previously known as Hotel Lav, has undergone an 80 Euro-million renovation and is the first Le Méridien hotel in Croatia and is the latest addition to Le Méridien’s growing portfolio since Starwood acquired the brand in November 2005. Global travelers will embrace Le Méridien Lav not only for its creative flair and cosmopolitan flavor, but also for its prime location in Split, the largest of all the cities in Dalmatia. One of the busiest ports and most popular leisure destinations of the Mediterranean, Split is the main artery for those exploring Croatia’s breathtaking coastline and picturesque islands in the Adriatic Sea. The only internationally-affiliated hotel within the area of Split, Le Méridien Lav is located in Podstrana, five miles south of downtown Split and approximately 15 miles from Split International Airport (SPU). “As Le Méridien grows its global footprint, we continue to focus on international destinations that bring to life the brand’s passions for art, architecture, design, cuisine and fashion,” said Eva Ziegler, Senior Vice President of Le Méridien brand. “With Split’s rich history, cultural offerings, spectacular art and architecture, it is an ideal location for Le Méridien.” Split’s most awe-inspiring attraction is Diocletian’s Palace, the summer residence of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Known for its diversity of architectural forms, the palace combines both classical Roman elements with foreign influences. In antiquity, the nine-acre edifice served as a fortified camp, but later was converted into a town and today serves as Split’s bustling residential and commercial center, packed with quaint boutiques, squares, markets and a Christian cathedral. After exploring Split’s dramatic historical center, visitors will marvel at Split’s other spectacular sites such as Jupiter’s Temple, Diocletian’s underground vaults and Mausoleum, and the city’s attractive promenade along the waterfront, home to many charming restaurants, bars and coffee shops. “We are truly excited to be opening this magnificent Le Méridien resort in the spectacular city of Split, the cultural hub of Croatia known for
its rich blend of art and architecture,” said Roeland Vos, President, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Europe Africa and Middle East. “The debut of Le Méridien in Split is a further sign of Starwood’s commitment to developing its brands in fabulous destinations that appeal to the ‘creative guest.’” In addition to offering ferries to Croatia’s many beautiful islands including Hvar and Korcula, Split has a well-run bus network and car rental agencies for those wishing to visit the outlying areas of the city. After exploring the city, visitors can spend a day visiting Split’s romantic beach or venture 30 minutes outside the city to beach Trogir, a village showcasing cultural treasures from medieval times. “Croatia is fast building a reputation as an international tourism hot-spot, with its natural beauty, pristine waters and unique cultural heritage,” said resort co-owner Ivica Kurtovic. Le Méridien’s 364 spacious guest rooms offer stylish, yet comfortable design, decorated with fabrics and colors inspired by the hotel’s natural surroundings. Additionally, the resort’s 17 suites and its 394 square-foot Presidential suite all offer breathtaking views of Split and its neighbouring islands. “With its array of resort attractions, prestigious
accommodations and stunning vistas, Le Méridien Lav, Split is the perfect locale for visitors from across the world to come and experience Croatia,” said the other resort co-owner, Jim Bosnjak. “As an Australian of Croatian heritage, I am proud to have helped play a role in the revitalization of Split’s local economy with the rebuilding of this iconic hotel.” The fully integrated, beach-front resort features a selection of seven bars and dining outlets including a fine-dining restaurant, a brassiere serving meals throughout the day, a casual pub, a Champagne lounge, a coffee room and an outdoor grill. Guests will relish the opportunity to pamper themselves in the three-story, Romaninspired, Diocletian Spa and fitness center. There is no shortage of entertainment available for visitors: diversions include the hotel’s night club, casino, shopping arcade, tennis academy, outdoor and indoor pools and bars, private yacht marina and full range of water sports. “With the opening of this resort, Le Méridien is poised to take its place as Croatia’s leading leisure outpost, said John G C Wood, General Manager of Le Méridien Lav, Split. “Le Méridien’s emphasis on chic, cultured discovery will resonate with the resort’s savvy, international guests.”

National Air Services (NAS), a private Riyadhbased aviation company, announced that it will invest US$2 billion in fleet expansion, including the purchase of 75 new aircraft by 2010. These aircraft will form the core of NAS’s newly licensed low-cost carrier (LCC) to be launched early this year.. In addition, the fleet will serve to expand the company’s highly successful Aircraft Fractional Ownership and Leasing program (NetJets) and Al Khayala Airlines. Following these acquisitions, NAS’s total fleet will include more than 100 aircraft. With investments of over US$2 billion, the company’s initial acquisition will include Airbus, Gulfstream and Raytheon aircraft. The selection of aircraft, in terms of seating capacity and haul range, will be determined by the specific needs of each business unit. According to senior company officials, the acquisition will be financed by leading Saudi, regional, and international financial and leasing institutions. Ayed Al Jeaid, NAS Chairman, said that the company’s acquisiton plans are reflective of the growing demand at the company’s different aviation units. “This is also in line with NAS’s ambitious strategy to diversify its business portfolio and tap new markets,” said Al Jeaid. Known across the Middle East as a leading provider of private aviation services, NAS recently expanded its business lines to include commercial aviation services. In 1994, the company launched Al Khayala Airlines, a business travel category that is new to the region. Earlier this month, NAS became the kingdom’s first private-sector company to be awarded government air transport license to operate flights from the Saudi capital, Riyadh. The NAS Chairman said: “The company is expanding its target base to include a wide range of customers with varying needs, and is focused on providing them with innovative services and tailor-made solutions – all delivered at the highest service levels by committed employees. In the process, NAS is also delivering increased value to its stakeholders.” According to recent market research, the growth in the aviation industry in the region stems from booming regional economies, increasing wealth and ongoing deregulation of the sector. “This creates attractive opportunities for NAS,” said Al Jeaid. “The overall growth of Middle East aviation and travel market has served as the catalyst for our significant expansion plans.” NAS has recently completed an internal reengineering process marked by the appointment of Taher Agueel as Chief Executive Officer as well as a team of world-class aviation experts to occupy senior management positions.
“The Sky is the Limit” at Le Royal Méridien Shanghai
In an extraordinary installation of light and art, Le Royal Méridien Shanghai opened with a First NightSM celebration entitled “The Sky is the Limit”. The internationally acclaimed artist Thierry Dreyfus illuminated the Shanghai cityscape, unveiling a permanent and contemporary light installation that enriched the electric Shanghai skyline. Five powerful “light cannons” beamed red light vertically into the sky and gently pulse, creating a beating effect that established Le Royal Méridien Shanghai as the “heart of Shanghai”. Inside the hotel at 789 Nanjing Lu Bar, located on the top 64th, 65th and 66th floors of the hotel, guests saw Shanghai in a new light through a unique one-ofa-kind art installation of multi-colored filters on the expansive windows, providing a new perspective onto the city of Shanghai. Le Méridien brand’s First Night celebration is the brand’s signature artistic experience designed for new hotel openings worldwide and is illustrative
of the new direction of Le Méridien since it was acquired by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc (NYSE: HOT) on November 1, 2005. Focused on transforming Le Méridien into a leading edge lifestyle brand that the “creative guest” is drawn to, Le Méridien has launched a number of nontraditional cultural initiatives. Le Méridien is forming partnerships with contemporary art institutions around the globe and recently appointed Jérôme Sans, a Paris-based arts provocateur, as the brand’s cultural curator, who is responsible for creating relationships with artists, museums and galleries worldwide, designed to truly elevate the guest experience . Le Méridien, with the guidance of Jerome Sans, identified acclaimed lighting artist Thierry Dreyfus to design artistic light installations for all three introductory FIRST NIGHT events in 2006 & 2007. Beginning with First Night San Francisco on November 1, 2006, Le Méridien San Francisco was transformed into a work of art through Thierry’s colorful reinterpretation of the building’s exterior into Mondrian-like light installation. The 24-story building became an ever-changing piece of contemporary art designed so that each guest interacts with the experience. First Night San Francisco will remain until January 31, 2007 and First Night Croatia will be unveiled in April 2007. “We are proud to engage artists of this caliber to strengthen Le Méridien. Through their contributions, we will stimulate our guests’ passion for art and culture by providing artistic experiences that inspire and stimulate them. To do so in the most forward-looking and modern city of Shanghai makes this event even more unique,” said Eva Ziegler, senior vice president, Le Méridien Brand. Thierry Dreyfus’ involvement in the project was conceived of by Jérôme Sans, the internationally renowned curator of The Baltic gallery, Gateshead (UK) and co-founder of Paris’ acclaimed Palais de Tokyo museum.

January 2007
On speaking about the aim of his work with Le Méridien he said, “The goal for Le Méridien is first to become a cultural hub for all people attracted to art, design, fashion, by discovery, people who appreciate chic culture in general.” As part of its ongoing pursuit to bring art and culture alive in a new light for guests and host cities alike, Le Méridien has formed an alliance with The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Shanghai. The partnership will offer Le Méridien guests special access to MOCA as part of their stay on presentation of their room key. The room key itself has become a piece of art as it has been designed by the renowned Franco-Chinese artist Yan Pei-Ming whose paintings are a bridge between East and West. The latest triumph from this talented painter was an immense portrait of French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, exhibited last spring at the Grand Palais in Paris. Located in the heart of the city as the tallest building in Shanghai Puxi, Le Royal Méridien Shanghai stands between the historic Nanjing Road East and the greenery of People’s Square. Dominating the skyline with 66 floors, it offers unparralled views over the Shanghai Museum, Grand Theatre and Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in the Puxi district and Pudong with the Huangpu River and the Bund. Le Royal Méridien Shanghai boasts 770 luxurious rooms and suites with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and an ultra modern design. The services include; 10 restaurants and bars, 2000 square metres of meeting space, two grand ballrooms, a spa, sauna and gym plus an indoor swimming pool with Jacuzzi, sauna and steam bath.
