TRANSFORM AND RESTRUCTURE

TRANSFORM & RESTRUCTURE

ABOUT Transforming and re-structuring are about changing or converting a particular form into a totally different form or an evolution of a form. In this project, it was about bringing different perspectives of a form around the human body, keeping in mind the space in and around the body. It’s about how there is no restrictions that the human body presents. This project was aimed at understanding the unconventional ways of designing, moving away from the existing paradigm of garment and the body. It was important to understand how we can fashion two-dimensional and the three-dimensional ways of handling shape, form and surface. Understanding forms, visually exercising the forms were an integral part of the project, It is also supposed to be playfully explored in terms of color, shape and texture to articulate the form. The project also aims at building vocabulary of approaching form by exploring various ways of pattern making and draping simultaneously increasing the knowledge of building a process of making a garment. We were introduced to various techniques which could be culminated during ideating our design developments. The final outcome was supposed to be made from building a personal narrative from the most mundane statements that sound like oxymorons.

PACKAGING- FORMS

The first task to the start of this project was to bring a interesting package, unique and interesting in terms of its shape, folding direction, size, details and the form. It aimed at understanding the package throughly to visual it around the human body which would later help us come up with a different perspective to creating a wearable piece. i started to sketch out the package to understand it and repeated elements-subtracted elements-added elements to explore different possibilities it could arrive at.

UPSCALED EXPLORATIONS OF THE PACKAGE 2. This exploration was very open and free to the body, the back has panels and

The back view of the exploration. There is a certain form of structure that we can see.

1.

The side view of the exploration, the head area could be considered as a hood or an exaggerated version of a collar.

In this exploration I tried to make the back of the body more explorative than the front.

5. Here i tried to create sleeves with joining the together but was only possible on one side due to the layout of the packaging.

The back was quite were open, the head area could be considered as a hood.

3.

The front only has two could be attached together with joineries.

This again was a structured kind of an exploration. The back looked like a box with tw

The box could be a functional use, like a pocket, The front is to be secured by joining the tw around the bust.

There was a certain fall of

body which could be considered as an exaggerating element etc.

4. This exploration basically was done by k and panels around the body to see what kinds of outcome it would generate.

We were supposed to built a personal narrative keeping in mind the oxymoron that we have chosen. For starters, I kept building some narratives that were generic and could be seen in our day-to-day lives.I came up with some keywords that affiliated with the oxymoron:

Taking forward these words I started building the stories, the stories came from general situations we face and our day-to-day lifestyle : 1. Focusing on goals or anything in particular is quite distracting, especially when there are troublesome thoughts that’s surrounding our mind. 2. Focusing on comparisons and enviousness is distracting and unsettling for developing oneself. 3. How even a little defect or difference grabs our focus onto it rather than the actual point of the whole scenario. 4. Multi-tasking, trying to focuson one particular thing while trying to focus on others simultaneously is a huge distraction. 5. Focusing on being perfect is a distraction to live life fully. There was also a thought about how focusing on distracting could also be positive, it doesn’t always have to be negative.

WHAT ARE OXYMORONS?

Oxymorons are the combination of two different word that make meaningful phrase.

Initially I had brainstormed as many oxymorons i could come up with by myself to understand which would best suit my project. I started mindmapping the few selected ones and then finally realized a oxymoron.

FOCUSED DISTRACTION

, my final oxymoron.

EXPLORING DIFFERENT COLOUR VARIATIONS FOR THE GARMENT

These were some of the explorations which I did to derive at the final selection of colour for the garment, these are all water colour based variations.

MUSLIN PROCESS OF THE GARMENT

These were the circular structures that I tried to create by gathering at one side and attached at the end.

The first layer trial didn't turn out the way I wanted it to., after a number of explorations i could see the desired shape.

It was a struggle to make both sides similar, I used copper wire to support the structure to its form. The panels were to be placed at center distributing them equally and tucked at the last layer.

SOURCING OF MATERIAL and exploring the mat

Initially for materials i started listing down things that are stiffer, stronger compared to the usual fabric properties. I wanted materials take could take a shape or help in taking a shape for the garment, starched fabrics, heavy fabric etc. The materials that i sourced wereCanvas Organza Organdy Felt Acrylic sheet Copper wire

Then i tried exploring it with the materials to see which one coyuld take the best form.

FINAL MATERIALS CANVAS (for the garment) ACRYLIC SHEET (for the panels) COPPER WIRE (to give shape to the garment)

FINAL PROCESS OF THE GARMENT

Gathering the layers wasn't easy because the canvas fabric was heavy and tougher to create gathers on it.

Final colour variation and size of the layer

Executing the final layers, stitched them all together at the inner part to hold in place.

Placing of the panels onto the garment, tucked each individally on the last layer.

Back of the garment, attached with a button on the topmost area.

THE CALLING

The form that you see has been derived from ideating some forms around the body, here the oxymoron that reflects this structural garment is ‘Focused Distractions’. The layering and gathering in the space between the arms and the torso reflect a sense of distraction and confusion, the colors has also been shown in different shades to create that distracting element whereas, the panels at the center of the body seeks attention from the viewer. The whole idea of the garment was to create a sense of the Oxymoron into it and connect the story of Multitasking in our everyday life which leads to ‘Focused Distractions’. The materials chosen were Canvas for the layers and gatherings, and, Acrylic sheet for the panels at the front. Because of the nature of the materials, we could say that the heaviness of the garment caused by the canvas and wire reflects how distractions are very much loaded within our heads and the lightness of the sheet for the panels reflect how focus nowadays has been found less with human being because of multitasking and sort of patience.
