VISC 414 Publication and Editorial / Patrick Dooley Book Redesign
Synopsis of project assignment
The Project was designed to take a book that has already been publication and relevant that way the material would be presented to better understand the book. The book was a text heavy writing of any kind and needed to included many different pieces inside with text parts such as; body text, pull quotes, side bars, sub heads, titles, chapters, and page divisions. The final product would be a sample selection of the reproduction of the book using its many text parts. Supportive material should also be used such as photography and illustrative elements if necessary to help the reader understand the book. We as designers came up with the grid size paper size and trim size that would be natural for our book selection
day-by-day synopsis
Jan 17 — given project outline and detail versions of how to execute the book, did research on the book and started to collect text parts, analyzed the book and dig deep into the meaning for its creation and the direction you want to take it with your design Jan 19 — Question why you design books and magazines and for what reason, analyze the parts of the book and create divisions of text parts within the book start thinking about layout directions Jan 24 — Make sure on thumb nails you start to develop a flow line and a grid structure. Stay true to your grid and flow line and mix up layout divisions but make them cohesive also Jan 26 — Start going on the computer and creating half scale mock ups that are detailed in where text and image would be placed Jan 31 — Create mood boards and color pallets and type treatments look at the texture that can be created with different text elements, pull your hang line down a little and pull in your gutter too small right now Feb 2 — make sure book is cohesive work on how to show your guideline icons in an easier way. take icons out of the boxes for the chapter. Create the whole book and printout for show Feb 7 — Try book binding and correct a couple little placements of boxes and color fields. Correct text fields to make sure that body text is 3 boxes and other text is 2. Feb 9 — review text parts make sure they are all in alignment with eachothr change some of the spacing between lines and work on paper quality of printing Feb 14 — make cover and mock up book with test parts make sure materials are correct
Feb 16 —print one more mock up of full book make cover wrap around
The analysis
TITLE: Your Child’s Health (A Pediatric Guide for Parents) by Barton D Schmitt, M. D. CONTENT: This pediatric book is all about health and the growth and development of a child. There are many different chapters and parts to the book. The book explains first emergency procedures and guides for how to act in situations. It then goes on to explain development from newborn to adolescence years. Then the book goes into medications needed and doses allowed. The content of the book is to be a quick grab and read about health and an encyclopedia of medical terms that explains what doctors are saying about their children. TEXT PARTS: Body text – explanatory paragraphs and pages about definitions List – examples and growth charts Prevention & personal examples Dosage Charts –by age and year Related Topics – many topics in the books reference each other If – Then action and solutions charts ILLUSTRATIVE PARTS Photos of children Photo of examples of health conditions Illustrative body parts of examples Illustrative how to (apply or take medicine) AUDIENCE The target audience for the book are new parents of children ranging from conceived to teenage years. It is written for both mom and dad and can be a quick help to look at and reference for health concerns ranging from minor scrapes to large catastrophe. WHATS WRONG WITH THE DESIGN There is no design or hierarchy within the type elements. The text paragraphs are blend together and the sizes of text are just large and bold and there is a one font throughout the book. Lines adding a little bit of graphic embellishments to the book break up some parts. APPROACH TO REDESIGN I want to create hierarchy with text and breaking up the paragraph and pull out the lists from the paragraphs. I want to incorporate design with medical elements and photography and graphic illustrations. I want it to be a an easy read and quick read for parents to be able to have near by in case of any questions pertaining their child that is faster than looking the answer up on the internet My design will allow for the viewer to be able to break up reading sections from lists and warnings. It will be a quick handy skim through to find the answer but still have large content so if time is allowed the viewer can read consistently and thoroughly information. I wish also to add photos and illustrations that better explain the content that will also be a guide reference when the child is in the situation that is explained. Final Project Concept Statement Synopsis Final Project Grid Structure
Concept Statment
The concept of this project was to redesign a book of our choice using the text parts created with any addition text or photography/ illustrations we felt needed to be included to enhance the book. The pediatric medical book is to be designed with a symbol guiding system and quick reads throughout the book to be able to be a quick read as well as an informational guide for new parents. My target audience for the book is young parents with new children that are interested in learning about many different medical instances that would come their way. The goal is to design a book that was a friendly doctoral reference in the palm of their hands.
Synopsis
The book had great text parts of different variety however in its original form it was laid out in paragraphic form. There was no hierarchy on the page and was designed more as a novel than an inviting medical book for young parents. My goal was to incorporate the text parts in a way that would be interesting to the layouts of the page as well as bring in photography and illustrations for examples of what the text was speaking toward. Color was limited to black and white in the original, but I wanted to ad a range of color throughout the book that would help organized the chapters and informational sections of the book.

Reflection
Reflection
This book pulled many new techniques into my tool box of design. I felt that taking a large text heavy project was a new and difficult project at first to be able to grasp how to design the page with so much text on the page as well. Creating a grid structure and page layout design actually feel pretty easy in this project. I thought that I was able to grasp more of the whole design element within each spread and it was pretty easy to be able to execute my layouts with my different text parts. The actual making of the book was a great skill to acquire with the project and after making the first book I felt more comfortable to complete the final book cover. All in all I felt this project reasonably challenging and I thought for the elements and content that needed to be displayed on a page I did a good job in executing the whole feel and reason behind the books contents.
