FLOURISH KNOWLEDGE NETWORKING POWER PROTECTION -Editorial Dear Fitagians, Greetings!!! FITAG has completed 7 years since its inception and FITAG times has also completed 2 years i.e. 24 issues. I must mention at this juncture that we have lost something which was very closely associated with FITAG as well as FITAG Times. Mr. Sejal Patel, who had been doing a business in Mahesana, joined FITAG as an executive member and graduated to the level of General Secretary of FITAG. He has permanently shifted to USA and we as FITAG will not be able to get his extra ordinary services any more. He is one of rarest

7 Storage Trends That Will Transform Your Data Center With so much change and innovation in the storage industry, it can be hard for an IT pro to keep up. Here are key technologies and trends that are poised to radically alter data center storage.

character I have seen. A keen observer, a true and honest person, hard worker and fully dedicated to FITAG. He had helped FITAG growing and remained an integral part of the federation since its inception. He also served as assistant editor of FITAG Times. This post if now vacant and I am in a serious need of a person who can take up this challenge. Those interested may please come forward. Hail FITAG!! <

e now have 16TB solid-state drives, exceeding even the densest bulk storage hard drive in capacity. With mid-tier SSDs priced 50% lower than “enterprise hard drives while running as much as 1000x faster, the latter are about to fade away. Once the new innovations in 3D NAND and wear-life extension really kick in, sometime in the 2017 timeframe, SSDs will be within the price range of even bulk storage hard drives, and the era of the spinning drive will come to an end. Products such as XPoint storage and ReRAM, together with closer coupling approaches such a Hybrid Memory Cube and its variants, will

impact systems from 2017 onwards, though it will be a battle royal to usurp a wellentrenched flash technology. A number of vendors are looking at variations of HMC designs, where 3D die stacking and the use of TSVs extends to stacking the CPUI/GPU and memory devices on modules with unprecedented bandwidth, possibly exceeding a terabyte per second. XPoint-type designs seem to fit this model, though there are other technologies in competition, such as ReRAM (HP) and spintronic memories. SPONSOR VIDEO, MOUSEOVER FOR SOUND The bottom line is that server performance will take a big step upward, changing

how jobs are distributed in the server pool and the size and layout of next-generation data centers. Primary storage is rapidly evolving in two directions, with and very fast direct-attached PCIe-NVMe SSDs in virtual SANs competing with all-flash arrays. It is too early to declare a winner and this will lead to a period of confusion involving hyperconverged systems battling storage appliances and a repositioning of all the vendors.

Ethernet has surpassed Fiber-Channel on every front

and is evolving faster. With Ethernet also underpinning new storage approaches from object storage to big data, the writing is on the wall for the

SAN approach. SANs will take a while to go away, but the modern data center needs to be built around the new approaches or face rapid obsolescence. We face a Linux-like revolution in storage. Traditional vendors mark up COTS gear heavily, creating a sense of injustice, while the barriers to self-integration of reliable solutions have fallen dramatically. The key is that COTS

process. From a user perspective, the new approach will allow access to the same technology that the large cloud service providers

use, providing the benefits of their volumes and low pricing. The concept of moving control code into virtual server instances looks set to reduce storage costs even further. The benefits of more agile operation and even lower appliance costs such make this approach compelling for users and bring much more competition and innovation to the storage market. Another benefit of SDS will be the explosion of innovators in the storage space. This will add a great deal of value aside from the lowered costs we can expect, and will introduce a healthy level of competition. The cloud is a driving force for much of the change

we’ll see in storage. The cloud brings new economics of scale and the innovation the cloud to the market place, which is forcing change for IT technology. Whether all storage eventually ends up in the cloud is

something for a larger debate, though the issue will not be resolved before the telcos provide widespread fiber WAN connections. Until then, we will be shackled by the need to feed systems fast enough.<

8 Back-To-School Gadgets IT Pros Will Want, Too

Here's what all the cool kids will be bringing back to school that you can use in your daily job or home life, too. Equally at home in dorms or offices, these aren't the gadgets you must have, but they'll quickly become the ones you want to have. This is no ordinary Bluetooth keyboard. Logitech's keyboard lets you use it with three devices at a time, including your phone, tablet, or PC -- regardless of operating Logitech K480 system. A simple switch togBluetooth Keyboard gles you between devices. Text via your phone, then switch to writing a report on your tablet with a turn of the dial. A welcome device in a world of mobile devices with tiny touchscreens. Perfect for the student in the library or the IT pro on the go. Never again worry about your kid, or yourself, if the power goes out. Candle Charger is a portable charging kit for your phone. Fill it with 5 oz of water and light the special candle. You'll have light for six hours - plus it will fully charge two smartphones. That way you've got access to your phone in an emergency, and a source of light until the power comes back on. Fully funded on Kickstarter, it seems like a great addition to any emergency kit.

The Hydra is a water bottle with a built-in Bluetooth speaker, a charger for your phone, a flashlight, and 12 oz. or 20 oz. of capacity for water. According to its Indiegogo page, the device is designed for cyclists who want to minimize the amount of gear they carry. I see it as the perfect party in a tiny box. Seems like the ideal camping or picnic device. With a colored LED it even seems like a nifty nightlight for kids. Of course, we've not heard the speaker because it is in pre-order after a successful crowdfunding run. Even if the sound turns out to be less than adequate, this is a still a fun device, weighing in at a mere 1 lb. (sans water). Yeah, that rainbow light-up thing is your new water bottle. The company that makes this is touting it as the most technologically advanced backpack in the world. iBackpack is a combination of components that make for a convenient set of capabilities. The backpack has a portable WiFi hotspot, a power supply to power said hotspot and recharge your many devices, a retractable USB power cord, a Bluetooth speaker, and GPS tracking to find it if it is lost (or to help you track your kid). iBackpack is water resistant and can accommodate a 15-inch laptop. It's a handy product for road warriors and helicopter parents alike. It was almost 500% funded at Indiegogo in its first 10 days.

Distractions are bad whether you're in the office or in school. Saent is basically an "I'm going to work now" button. Push the button, and it creates a predetermined focus environment for you. It turns off the software on your computer you have deemed distracting, such as social media, and tracks how long you work. It gives you reward points for each

uninterrupted block of 10 minutes. If you try to turn on any of the software you deemed distracting, it will remind you that you should be working. Why a physical button instead of software? The company claims science has proven a physical connection to work is important. Saent is 96% funded on Indiegogo. If it works (which is probably a personal thing) you can easily earn the $40 price back in productivity. If it doesn't work, it will make an attractive paperweight.

Suggested retail price: Ranges from $25 to $33 and includes three months of Evernote premium service. Evernote's camera can capture handwritten images and translate them into notes for Evernote. Now, Moleskine has created a line of paper notebooks designed specifically for users who want to create digitized versions of handwritten notes. Evernote is offering the books with a few little touches to make its software more useful. A group of stickers can be used as tags to automatically organize notes. A small green ribbon can be used as a book mark, and also signals to the camera that there is a page break. These physical touches combine with software for a useful way to translate physical notes to digital ones. continued on page 4...

THE

INTERNET OF THINGS The IoT is a technology in the making and we can experience it in small ways, even now. The author presents an ‘appetite whetting’ article on it, highlighting its vast potential while also raising concerns about data security and privacy.

T

he internet of Things if often referred to by other name – the Internet of ‘Everything’ of the Internet of Intelligent Objects. It is a network of objects that can communicate with each other. Thery could be in sensors, electronics or analyse the data between various devices which is further used for management, planning and decision making. The IoT enables direct connection between physical devices and computer based systems. So this has led to an era in which the connection between devices of objects will be more than the one between human beings. The IoT concept is such that anything with intelligence fed into it, can be connected. With the continuous evolution in technology, today, the communication between people is reducing while human beings are getting more connected to their devices. Today, many organizations such as Cisco, GE, etc, are using the IoT for developing their applications. The importance of the IoT is continuously increasing due the growth of cloud computing, mobile technology and data analytics. IoT will greatly impact human life. Consider a word in which, based on the time you set for your alarm to ring, the coffee maker will start preparing coffee and the geyser will begin to heat the water for your bath. Outside home, the car will automatically track how heavy traffic is and will apprise you of the situation. When the vegetables in the refrigerator run low, the fridge will re-order more, automatically, from the nearest store. This is what IoT technology is all about. It includes various technologies that cover wireless senor networks, RFID enabled track-

ing, embedded systems, Internet connected wearables, Bluetooth – enabled devices that connect to the internet, etc.

The IoT reference architecture It is difficult to formulate standard architecture for this technology due to the wide variations in devices, network configurations and so on. So let’s consider a reference architecture. Requirements for a reference architecture are based on from factors and the power available for the IoT devices. It also depends on how the de-

made up of low-power circuits and support wireless communication, which enables them to be available at a low cost. This enables the creation of devices made up of a large number of intelligent sensors which are used for sensing, data gathering and analysis in various environments. Sensor data is shared between various nodes and then stored at a centralised network for analysis. The components of a WSN or wireless senor network are WSN hardware, the communication stack, middleware, se-

and o develop custom applications. And SaaS provides the platform for users to run applications. Visualization is one of the important aspects of the IoT. It helps users to interact with the environment. The continuous development of touchscreen technologies has led to higher usage of smartphones and tablets. This has helped the lay man to understand and visualize the technology. With the help of visualization techniques, more useful and meaningful information can be extracted/analysed and depicted. This improves decision making capabilities.

Using IoT technology It can be useful in various day-to-day scenarios as shown in Figure 6.

Challenges

vices are manufactured and used. The basic requirements for the design of the architecture can be summarized in Figure 2. IoT architecture comprises three main components as shown in figure 3. The IoT uses electromagnetic fields to transfer the data which can be used for tracking and identifying the objects. It basically depends on small electronic devices consisting of a chip and antenna for transmission of data. These chips are capable of transferring huge amounts of data. These devices work just like a bar code scanner. Every object in the network is provided a unique identity. The devices scan the objects in order to identify them, by recognizing the unique ID. The advantage of these devices is that they don’t need such precise scanning as required when using bar codes. Now a days, devices are

cure data aggregation systems, etc. The success of the IoT depends on each object or device’s unique address. Features of this address are uniqueness, persistence, reliability, etc. handling such a large number of devices requires a platform that is reliable, agile, elastic and easy to use. Such a platform is provided by the cloud. Cloud computing supports the IoT. It is an architecture that provides various technological capabilities such as affordable storage, multi-tenancy,on-demand services, quality of service, a ‘pay per use’ model and so on. It provides three types of services which are infrastructure as a service (IaaS), Platrorm as a service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS). IaaS provides a platform to use the hardware, which can be provided to the user as a cloud resource. PaaS provides the platform to access the IoT data

Like every other technology, there are some challenges with IoT also, such as small organizations finding it difficult to adopt due to budget issues, security risks and so on. Some of the challenges encountered with IoT are: Security: The IoT connects many devices together. Many

devices in a network may be less expensive, and might not have been tested for malware and bugs. So in such a situation, a security assurance cannot be given. Moreover, there are many layers of networks, so communication between various devices at the same time can increase the risk factor with this technology. Complexity, confusion and integration issues: As the IoT connects various networks which are based on different protocols, testing and integrating them will be very difficult. Currently, there are no standards available, which creates confusion during integration. Privacy: As there are no universally-accepted compliance parameters available for medical and lifestyle applications, concerns about privacy and trust increase. Multiple users will be accessing the same network, in which case, data security, data accuracy and privacy may get compromised. < Courtesy by - OpenSourceForu By: Priyanka Agashe and Mitesh Soni

LibreOffice 5.0 comes with major performance changes

L

ibreOffice has been a great open source office suite for a long time now. The suite also hasa version for Android. LibreOffice just released its latest version 5.0 for users. Unlike Microsoft Office or Apple’s iWork, Libre Office 5.0 is absolutely free. The latest version is faster and better than the previous ones. On the front-face, the latest version comes with several major interface changes. It still follows a retro office suite look. The real change is in terms of performance. It’s much faster than previous versions. It can open and save files in the blink of an eye. There is tremendous performance enhancement while working with PDF files as well.

LibreOffice’s spreadsheet application, Calc, is now compatible with Excel files. You can load an Excel file and edit it. However, not all functions are compatible with Excel functions. The new features are as polished and as fast as Microsoft’s Excel and Google Sheets. Calc has new powerful conditional formatting and table addressing features. The latest version has simplified complex formulae and image cropping. The latest version of Writer has also improved. You can now experience aetter word processing experience with Writer. The compatibility is also not an issue anymore. LibreOffice 5.0 is fairly compatible with Microsoft Word’s documents. You can easily perform formatting and editing of Word documents using LibreOffice Writer. There are features to export and import form MS Office, PDF, RTF and more. Users can now time - stamp PDF documents. The latest version is a necessary upgrade for current LibreOffice users. If you are a Microsoft Office or an iWork user, you should try this as an alternative.

ITAG Times Any new operating system arrives with a few minor niggles and bugs. Windows 10 is no exception, so we've put together some quick tips to solve common problems. Step 1 of 9: Quick fixes for common Windows 10 problems: Adjust the amount of Virtual Memory your system uses

then at the prompt type netplwiz and press enter. In the User Accounts dialog box, click the account you want to automatically log on to. If it is available, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer check box. Click OK. Then in the Automatically Log On dialog box, enter the user’s password twice and click OK. Step 3 of 9: Quick fixes for common Windows 10 problems: How to make sure Cortana works in the UK

The virtual memory settings in Windows 10 are a little on the frugal side. This is fine is you have plenty of RAM in your machine, but for others this can become something of a bottleneck and affect performance. Thankfully fixing it is easy. Open the Start Menu, select Settings, then type Performance. Now choose Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows>Advanced> Change, check at the bottom of the Window what the Recommended value is and how it compares to Currently allocated. If the recommended is less then click Automatically manage paging file size for all drives>Custom Size, then enter the Recommended value into the Initial Size box, and a larger figure in the Maximum box. Click OK and you’re good to go. Step 2 of 9: Quick fixes for common Windows 10 problems: How to log in automatically, even with a Microsoft account

Microsoft’s digital assistant, Cortana, is a very handy addition to Windows 10, but if your PC settings aren’t all set up for a single, compatible region, and you don’t have certain language packs installed, then you’ll receive the ‘Cortana isn’t supported in your region’ message whenever you try to use the service. You’ll be glad to know then that we’ve created a short guide called How to Make Cortana work in Windows 10. Step 4 of 9: Quick fixes for common Windows 10 problems: How to change startup programs in Windows 10

If you don’t want to be fiddling around with passwords and prompts when you turn on your PC, then you automate the process. To do this press WIN+R,

When Windows 10 was first installed on your PC it may well have been as sprightly as a gazelle, but after a short while your start up times became akin to a heavily

laden tortoise with motivation issues. One potential source of this is too many programs automatically loading when you reboot your machine. To fix this issue follow our How to change Windows 10 startup programs tutorial. Step 5 of 9: Quick fixes for common Windows 10 problems: Reinstall printer drivers

A common complaint is that the printer won't print after upgrading to Windows 10. To fix it, right-click on your printer in the Devices and Printers section of the Control Panel and remove it. Now download the latest drivers from your printer manufacturer (they can be Windows 7 or 8.1 drivers - don't have to be Windows 10) and install them, remembering to set this printer as your default if its the main printer. Step 6 of 9: Quick fixes for common Windows 10 problems: Importing your Favourites into the Edge Browser In Windows 10 Microsoft has introduced the Edge browser, which has many cool new features. In fact you can read about them in our How to use the Edge browser tutorial. One common problem with changing to a new browser

though is that of bringing your bookmarks with you. Thankfully this is an easy fix. To do so simply open the Edge browser, click on the three lines in the upper right hand corner, then select Import Contacts. Now you’ll see a list of browsers that you have installed, each with a tick box next to them. Select the ones you want to include, then click Import. Step 7 of 9: Quick fixes for common Windows 10 problems: Stop pop-up ads

in the Edge browser Pop-up ads can be incredibly annoying, therefore getting your browser to prevent them appearing is an almost essential function. To do this in the Edge browser you need to click on the three dots in the top right hand corner, then scroll down and select Advanced Settings. In here you’ll see a slider switch for Block pop-ups. Make sure it’s turned on and you should be safe from intrusive ads. Step 8 of 9: Quick fixes for common Windows 10 problems: Fix icon sizes in Windows 10 There is reportedly a bug that some users are encountering which makes icon sizes on Continued from page 7...
