Self-confidence key Self-confidence key - Editorial Equitymaster.com/Free-Book It is not the RBI alone but the Government too that should facilitate re-pricing imports and restoration of export competitiveness The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) latest monetary policy review is notable for the absence of a clear signal on its future stance with regard to the recent liquidity tightening measures aimed at ‘restoring stability’ in the foreign exchange market. While the RBI was unlikely to say how long these measures would be in place – despite market players looking for a rough indication of the intended timeframe – the least it could have done is explain what ‘stability’ means. After all, when it came to inflation, the RBI had a clearly laid down objective of containing the annual wholesale price index increase within five per cent in the short-term and three per cent over the medium term. Everyone, therefore, had an idea of what the RBI was going to do with its policy rates in Dr. Kalp System this case: Come what may, the central financial bank wouldn’t budge unless headline inflation was contained and firmly anchored within its targeted range. Corporates, bankers and even Finance Ministry mandarins could fret and fume at such rigidity, but they knew there was some basis to it and could plan accordingly. The latest policy has made addressing risks to macroeconomic stability from ‘external shocks’ as the RBI’s top priority, ahead of concerns over growth (as in the last couple of policies) or the re-emergence of inflationary pressures (as in the ones preceding those). Linked to this reordering of priorities is also the new monetary policy guidance, which it says will be aimed at “checking undue volatility” and “restoring stability” in the forex market. The fact that the current set of liquidity tightening measures will continue till the above goals are met, even as neither ‘undue volatility’ nor ‘stability’ are properly defined, only adds......
Sterling rises after UK industrial output data beats forecasts
Fitag News Paper S
terling rose on Tuesday after Britain's industrial output beat forecasts, adding impetus to the view that the economy was firmly on the path of a recovery. But market participants refrained from pushing the pound much higher before Wednesday's Bank of England Inflation Report, in which the central bank could provide forward guidance and indicate that interest rates will stay at record lows for a prolonged period. Sterling was up 0.1 percent at $1.5366, having hit a session high of $1.5392. The euro was down 0.1 percent at 86.29 pence, off a low of 86.185 pence. Britain's industrial output in June rose much faster than forecast and hit its quickest pace in over two years, driven by manufacturing. The numbers followed data on Tuesday showing British retail sales
least until late 2015/2016. Money market rates, such as overnight indexed swaps
had their best July performance since 2006, while UK house prices rose at their fastest since 2010. "UK data has been good but sterling is still below that $1.5380 level, which is significant," said Kathleen Brooks, research director at FOREX.com. "There is a bullish bias but people are unwilling to go very long sterling ahead of tomorrow's BoE Inflation Report."Short-term inter-
est rates are being anchored by expectations that the central bank may signal it will keep its key policy rate low at least until late 2015/2016. Money market rates, such as overnight indexed swaps , are pricing in the possibility of the first move in the bank rate, currently at 0.5 per cent, in three years. A 25 basis point rate hike is fully factored in only in four years. "Our favoured statement in
the Inflation Report would be that no rate hikes until the unemployment level has fallen below 6.5 per cent unless wage growth exceeds 4.5 per cent," said Saeed Amen, currency strategist at Nomura. "If they put explicit thresholds around forward guidance or some sort of message similar to that sterling would fall." But witiv the central bank

usiness degrees are among the most versatile options for those looking for new career opportunities. Business skills are required in all major industries, financial institutions and the government sector. People in all walks of life can benefit from additional exposure on managing people and resources. A business degree will thus allow you to keep your options open and prepare you for roles requiring responsibility and leadership. The best thing about business degrees is that they are designed to be practical and tailored to
the current requirements of the market. Schools that offer business degrees often collaborate with local employers to design the curriculum. This ensures that curriculum does not grow obsolete and graduates are well prepared for the nuances of the job market. In fact the linkage between employers and business schools is so strong that it is extremely common for these same employers to recruit the business graduates. Business degrees are thus a safe and lucrative investment of your time and resources.
