Technology Trends In today's ever more technology-centric world, the stodgy IT department isn't considered the home of innovation and business leadership. Yet that might have to change as some of the biggest advances in the history of technology make their way into the front lines of service delivery. Here's an exploration of the top IT trends in the next half decade, including some of the latest industry data, and what the major opportunities and challenges are. Much or most of these topics are in back burner mode in many companies just now seeing the glimmerings of recovery from the downturn. Much has been written lately about the speed at which technology is reshaping the business landscape today. Except that's not quite phrasing it correctly. It's more like it's leaving the traditional business world behind. There are a number of root causes: The blistering pace of external innovation, the divergent path the consumer world has

taken from enterprise IT, and the throughput limitations of top-down adoption. As a result, there's a rapidly expanding gap between what the technology world is executing on and what the enterprise can deliver. Many

now think this gap may actually become untenable, and they may be right. Yet recent large surveys of CIOs continues to show an almost exclusively evolutionary and internal focus. Many feel that a technology emphasis is

Fitag Times reaches to 21,000 retailers / dealers across Gujarat Flipkart are the live examples of the same. Few of these portals have also started selling ICT products which will shrink our margins further.......... We thought of ways and means that can give you increased margin in this competitive world of ICT and ITES. And that is why we are covering few very important trends in ICT for current and the coming year in the main article. If you are able to catch up with any of these trends, not only you survive for another few years but also can grow...........The key is to change with the changing time. We are adding few interesting sections from this edition, out of which "FITAG Wi-5 Mentor Mantra" by our offi-

cially appointed mentor Shri Nandak Pandya will be of great help to all Fitagians. On the other hand Google has become a lifeline for any IT professional, but what all we can do other then searching the web with the help of Google is a mystery to many. "What all you can do with Google?" will surely be a very informative series for all. wrong right now, and they're certainly right, if it's not integrated with top priority business objectives. However, these days it's technology advancements and new digital markets that are often the key to an organization's future. At the end of the day, businesses must be able to effectively serve the markets they cater to, and doing so means using the same channels and techniques as their trading partners and customers. Organizations must adapt to the evolving marketplace to succeed. Fortunately, I do believe there are approaches that can yet be adopted to address this increasingly significant challenge. Here are the 10 hottest IT trends: 1. Cloud reliance reshapes device needs. More than 50 per cent of tablet users and well above 40 per cent of smartphone users in USA, Japan, Australia and Sweden appreciate the improved ... Contined on page 2...

simplicity of having the same apps and data seamlessly available through the cloud on multiple devices. It's obvious to the casual observer these days that smart mobile devices based on iOS, Android, and even Blackberry OS/QNX are seeing widespread use. But comparing projected worldwide sales of tablets and PCs tells an even more dramatic story. Using the latest sales projections from Gartner on tablets and current PC shipment estimates from IDC, we can see that by 2015 the tablet market will be 479 million units and the PC market will be only just ahead at 535 million units. This means tablets alone are going to have effective parity with PCs in just 3 years. So, while it's still early days yet, it's also quite clear that we must start treating tablets as equal importance in all IT strategies. 2. Computing for a scattered mind. From desktops, files and folders to flat surfaces, apps and cloud services, consumers are increasingly turning their backs on a computing paradigm for the focused mind. Tasks are handled at the spur of the moment – as we stand in a shopping line or talk to someone at a cafÊ. Purchase intent is higher for tablets compared to desktop PCs, and for smartphones compared to laptops. 3. Bring your own broadband to work. A total of 57 per cent of smartphone users use their personal smartphone subscriptions at work. Personal smartphones are increasingly being used for work, to send emails, plan business trips, find locations and more. 4. City-dwellers go relentlessly mobile. By relentlessly accessing the internet always and everywhere, consumers are now an unstoppable force making internet truly mobile. Total smartphone subscriptions will reach 3.3 billion by 2018 and mobile network coverage is one of the most important drivers of satisfaction for city life. 5. Personal social security networks. As a result of eco-

nomic turbulence, trust in traditional structures and authorities is decreasing and consumers increasingly trust their personal communities. Personal networks online serve as a safety net and social media is shaping up to be a serious contender to the traditional job agency.

connect and exchange ideas with others, making it the third most common reason for social networking after staying up-to-date with friends and keeping them updated. 8. In-line shopping. A total of 32 per cent of smartphone users already shop

Simultaneously governments and institutions look for new ICT solutions in order to be more efficient. Connectivity changes the outlook for children on a global scale. In India, around 30 million of 69 million urban children aged 9 to 18 own mobile phones.

Fitag Times reaches to 21,000 retailers / dealers across Gujarat While mobile phones technically have a broader reach than any communications device, social media has already surpassed that workhorse of the modern enterprise, e-mail. Increasingly, the world is using social networks and other social media-based services to stay in touch, communicate, and collaborate. Now key aspects of the CRM process are being overhauled to reflect a fundamentally social world andexpecting to see stellar growth in the next year. Leading organizations are becoming social enterprises. There now seems to be hard data to confirm this view: McKinsey and Company is reporting that therevenue growth of social businesses is 24% higher than less social firms and data from Frost and Sullivan backs that up across various KPIs. The message is that companies are going to -- and have every reason to -- be using social media as a primary channel in the very near future, if they aren't already. It's time to get strategic. 6. Women drive the smartphone market. New figures clearly show that women drive mass-market smartphone adoption. No less than 97 per cent of female smartphone owners use SMS. A total of 77 per cent send and receive photos, 59 per cent use social networking, 24 per cent check in at locations and 17 per cent redeem coupons. The figures for men are lower in these areas. 7. Cities become hubs for social creativity. City centre dwellers have significantly more friends online than people in suburban areas. 12 per cent of people that live in cities say that the main reason for using social networks is to

with smartphones; they now start to combine in-store and online shopping aspects. They want to see products, get information and make price comparisons, and make purchases immediately without having to queue up at the cash register. Give an option of look and feel to the customer. 9. Learning in transformation. Learning is transformed through both internal and external forces: Young people bring their personal technology experience into the classroom, driving a bottom-up pressure for change.

10. Adoption of Cloud technology. Of all the technology trends on this list, cloud computing is one of the more interesting and in my opinion, now least controversial. While there are far more reasons to adopt cloud technologies than just cost reduction, perceptions of performance issues and lack of visibility into the stack remain one of the top issues for large enterprises. Yet, among the large enterprise CTO and CIOs, cloud computing is being adopted steadily for non-mission critical applications and some

2

are now even beginning to downsize their data centers. Business agility, vendor choice, and access to nextgeneration architectures are all benefits of employing the latest cloud computing architectures, which are often radically advanced compared to their traditional enterprise brethren. Be a part of cloud computing solutions. In nut shell, the trends are revolving around consumerization of Information technology. People wants less problems and support as far as devices and gadjets are concerned and they also want maximum output always from the same. Enterprise IT also is being influenced by this consumerization of Information technology at user level and allowing BYOD trends in work atmostphere. 2

What is Obsolescence?

(a) From the business point of view Obsolescence is the state of being which occurs when an object, service, or practice is no longer wanted even though it may still be in good working order. Obsolescence frequently occurs because a replacement has become available that has, in sum, more advantages than the inconvenience related to repurchasing the replacement. (b) From the businessman's point of view Obsolete refers to something

3

that is already disused or discarded, or antiquated.[1] Typically, obsolescence is preceded by a gradual decline in popularity. (c) From the employee's point of view "Obsolescence occurs when there is a gap between the job needs and one's capabilities." Obsolescence as the discrepancy between job performance and an expected level of competence which incorporates new knowledge being introduced into a profession.

Types of Obsolescence

There are two types of obsolescence: 1. Ability Obsolescence--the employee's/businessman's abilities and skills are no longer sufficient for him to keep up with the jobs;

and 2. Attitudinal Obsolescence-the employee/businessman fails to maintain flexibility in attitude and approach, and to changing problems and conditions.

Factors Responsible for Obsolescence

¢ Systems Related: the IT

Individual Factors 1. The denial of obsolescence, 2. Lack of awareness of change in IT industry, 3. Resistance to change. 4. Lack of confidence 5. Complacency Organizational Factors Under the broad category of Organizational Factors three categories: ¢ Job Related: a mismatch between the person and the job, lack of autonomy or non-involvement in decision-making; ¢ Relationship Oriented: the impediments from the businessman as he is non-supportive;

5

Consequences of Obsolescence

The problem of obsolescence has deep-rooted consequences, for not only can it affect the individual, but also his business and the organisation. The consequences of obsolescence can also be categorised into... (a) Those affecting the person At the individual level an awareness of obsolescence in self and subsequent inability to overcome it can lead to feelings of incompetence and

business policies and practices like lack of reward/ recognition; inappropriate promotion policy; ineffective performance appraisal system and lack of training & development.

low levels of self-esteem and self-confidence, helplessness and frustration. (b)Those impacting the IT business organization. The adverse effect on an individual can also lead to low levels of involvement in activities, especially involving working in teams, avoidance behaviour and absence from duty when there are heavy demands on the individual. All these can result in low levels of productivity at the organizational level.

How can it be Tackled?

In our IT industry, the problem of obsolescence can be tackled by a two-pronged approach: A. Initiatives at the Individual Level 1. An employee should Develop short and long term goals which expand his knowledge and skills. Pursue life-long learning and take ownership for self development. 2. Keep abreast with current developments in your field: Know how far your

the key to elevation & excellence. B. Initiatives at the Organisational Level The onus for providing the right environment for its workforce rests on the organisation. 1. Organisational Climate means the extent to which organisational climate encourages autonomy, innovativeness and rewards high performance The businessman should Create an environment where Attitude towards learning is elevated. 2. People with high potential should move through a series of challenging jobs. And Motivation should be provided to update oneself & organization. Jobs should provide a range of challenges and at the same time Self-initiated updating activities are happening. Employees need to learn from highly skilled colleagues, superiors as well as training sessions. 3. Jobs should provide sufficient headroom (authority and responsibility) and elbow room (scope and variety). Make sure that Professional knowledge/ skills are acquired ongoingly. Organisational should provide Support for enhancing education and career planning for its professionals. 4. Performance appraisal should focus more on the potential appraisal to assess a manager to perform additional and higher responsibilities rather than one which is based on past performance alone. The appraisal should be followed by giving feedback, coaching, mentoring, and training. Only our industry has proved to be in tune with all the obsolescence happening all around. Till date we have used it to our advantage. It has been a boon to us. Let's keep it as it a Boon forevern

Google’s 5-minute downtime plunges global internet traffic by 40% n August 17, the unthinkable happened- Google, and all its services such as Gmail and YouTube, went dark for a duration that spanned a single minute to five minutes starting from 4.22 AM to 4.27 AM IST. As a result, global internet traffic crashed by 40% as users couldn’t access any of the dozens of hugely popular services that the search giant runs. The numbercrunching was done by GoSquared, a Web analytics company who also noticed that global web traffic spiked once Google was back up and running. This number (scarily) proves how intensely everyone relies on Google. Inspite of the clear effects that its health has on the global internet, Google has refused to divulge any details about why the blackout happened, responding merely with a statement that sid: “Between 15:51 and 15:52 PDT, 50 percent to 70 percent of requests to Google received errors; service was mostly restored one minute later, and entirely restored after 4 minutes.”

India must be more A serious about cyber security: EC-Council C- Council has called for more stringent actions to secure cyber infrastructure in India. Citing the recent spate of cyberattacks on the websites of the Indian government, ECCouncil has expressed concerns over the lack of professionals in the cyber security domain. It has suggested that the country should invest more into training young IT professionals as well as into creating a sturdy infrastructure for robust cyber defence. At an event held in New Delhi, EC-council Global President Jay Bavisi pointed out that China is estimated to have 25 million cyber security experts whil 1.25lakh are from the local government. The US has 91,080 experts in the government while India has just 556 experts. Bavisi also emphasized on the successful model of the US Cyber Security Plan, which envisages 15% more cyber security experts every year. EC-Council pointed out a recent study revealing that 5.39 million local malware threats were detected on computers in India. According to the organisation, India is lagging behind in its fight against cyber warfare. Any attack will result in financial loss, no mater how sophisticated. In regards to the government’s Cyber Security Policy 2013, Jay Bavisi said the policy seemed to be great on paper, but there should be greater focus on its implementation. He was also sceptical about the government’s target of creating a work force of 5,00,000 prefessionals skilled in cyber security in the near future. Relevantly, as many as 78 government websites fell prey to hackers in the first half of 2013, revealed Minister of State for Communications & IT Milind Deora in the Parliament.

What you can do with “Google” GOOGLE MAPS oogle recently unveiled a huge makeover to its Google Maps. Currently available in beta mode, it lets you discover changes in its interface and improved accessibilities. However, the search results in this version remain more or less the same as in the earlier version. You'll find some changes in the form of search inputs and queries. Unlike the older Version of Google Maps, it has a bunch of new and improved functionalities such as advanced filters for search queries.

G

Search on the new Google MAPS Let’s say you’re looking for coffee shops near Mumbai’s Marine Lines railway station, you can use the term “near”in your search query. Therefore, the most appropriate search query would be “coffee near marin liness”. In the results you’ll be shown all the coffee shops located around Marine Lines railway station. You can do the same for other similar search queries.

Instantly share URLs Whenever you want to share the URL of a particular map, all you have to do is click a button called “link” on the older version of Google Maps. The new Google Maps will allow you to always have a permalink of any place you search for. Whenever you search for any location,

you‘ll find its URL present inside the address bar, ready to be retrieved and shared instantly with your friends.

View all available information for a location at once Say you have a friend’s wedding in Kolkata and you want to tour the place while there. Once you’ve entered the city name in the search field, related imagery for the place will automatically show up. All you need to do is simply click on any location on the map and explore the area with the help of photo tours that will appear below the search box Earth view can be accessed at the bottom -left corner on the new interface of Google Maps.

Zoom in as you please If you think pinching the screen is the only way to zoom in and out of G o o l g e M a p s , You’re not well acquainted with all of its capabilities, because in addition to this, you can also double-tap your screen, hold, and then scroll up and down to zoom in and out.

Get offline Google Maps If there are particular locations on Google Maps that you’re fond of, you don’t need to be online and connected to access them each time. You can simply make them appear offline for later use. Whil you’re online, go to the Google Maps application on your phone and open the

map. In the search box, you’ll find search suggestions for recently accessed places. Select “Make this map area available offine” and you’re done. Note: This feature is currently available only on Android, and not on iOS.

Start using turnby-turn navigation instantly To enable GPS support for turn-by-turn navigation, you don’t have to get into your mobile settings. GITA- Gandhidham Successfully Completes First Ever IT Expo We are pleased to share with you the success story of our (Gandhidham IT Associaiton GiTA) Association’s 1st IT Expo-2013. In November 2012, the core committee decided to finally do the Expo. We met for a week, discussing & pondering the way to execute it, but again we found that with a mere strength of 6 core-committee, it’s a behemoth kind of task to face. And the Expo project once again was shelved. But again, on the persistence of our President, Mr. Satish Awatramani, the core committee met. And on his insistence, on 17th of August 2013, Expo was declared with date as 24th & 25th of September, 2013 and the venue, Yoga Mandir was finalised on 22nd August 2013. We had thought of an Expo, necessarily not a grand one, but something, which we could proudly call OURS. Mr. Ricky Sharma (Vice President of GiTA) was appointed as the Project Head. Mr. Satish Awatramani (President of GiTA) took the responsibility of marketing along with loads of other responsibilities and the whole team, Mr. Manish Patel (Secretary of GiTA), Mr. Ketan Gohel (Treasurer of GiTA), Mr. Vikasdutt Sharma (Joint

Secretary of GiTA), Mr. Brijbhushan Choudhary (Joint Treasurer of GiTA) and Mr. Hardik Naryani (past Treasurer of GiTa) worked hard to realise the dream of Expo. When time came, Mr. Suresh Chaturani, GiTA member, extended his help in media support. Along the way, there was tremendous support & encouragement from FiTAG representatives viz. Kaushikbhai, Gaurangbhai, Miteshbhai, Sejalbhai and others. We have not expected, but the end result was surprising. The highlighting points of the Gandhidham IT Associaiton’s IT EXPO 2013, organised on 24-25th September, 2013 from 10:00AM to 09:00 PM are :First IT Expo of Kutch. That too done in a short span of 35 days. Inaugurated by Mr. Bachubhai D. Ahir, President of Gandhidham Chamber of Commerce & Indutry, Gandhidham.
