About
The Kamloops Symphony engages, enriches, educates, and inspires through the power of music. Our 2019-2020 Season was a year of both new beginnings, and unexpected endings. Although it may not have concluded as any of us envisioned, the Symphony experienced growth and success in many ways, and is well set up for the transitionary period to come. Considered a cornerstone of the cultural fabric of Kamloops, the KSO’s primary activity is the presentation of high quality professional orchestral concerts, based in Western classical music. Historically, this has been accomplished through the presentation of nine to ten annual programs, and up to eighteen performances in Kamloops and the neighboring city of Salmon Arm. An important part of the Symphony’s mandate is to provide educational opportunities for the citizens of Kamloops. The Symphony also presents concerts for school children, and educational presentations in public and private district schools. Since 2002, the Kamloops Symphony Music School, a division under the Kamloops Symphony, has provided opportunities for music education to citizens of the region, and given further employment opportunities to local musicians. The school has extended our community connections and helped attract professional musicians to live and work in Kamloops.

Message from the President If I said we faced unprecedented challenges in our 2019-2020 season, I would be understating the fact. So, I’ll put it this way: COVID-19, almost brought our organization to its knees, like so many other arts organizations across the globe, in the spring of 2020. However, with great resilience, determination, and an innovative spirit, we succeeded to conclude the 2019-2020 season and to revise our planned 2020-2021 program. We began to re-invent ourselves, as many organizations in our arts and cultural sector in Canada and beyond have often done in the past, to become a beacon of hope and positive change. In the midst of the pandemic crisis, we saw future possibilities which we worked to realize. The artistic leadership strived to keep musicians employed. Our administration kept up communication with our audience. The Board of Directors continued to govern and to keep the organization financially healthy. We would like to thank many foundations, donors and sponsors, and federal, provincial and municipal government agencies for their understanding and extraordinary financial generosity. We also like to thank our staff for their dedication and their will to soldier through these difficult times. We give special thanks to our Music Director & Conductor Dina Gilbert and the KSO musicians, who comprise the heart and soul of the organization. Financially, emotionally and professionally, they lost out on the most due their inability to play and perform. All round, we hope the worst is behind us and the best before us. Concerts and performances provide aesthetic, emotional and spiritual connection between artists and audiences. This connection only happens in real time and space. We are determined to continue such a connection in various shapes and forms in the 2020-2021 season, which will take us to the edge of the future.

Message from the Music Director Even though the 2019-2020 season stopped abruptly with the arrival of the pandemic, the Kamloops Symphony offered its public seven of the nine concert programs originally planned in Kamloops and Salmon Arm. Highlights of this past season were numerous and were focused on two majors axis: the continuous artistic development of the orchestra and working conditions were improvements that had a positive impact on our craft. Dedicated to celebrating the talent of Canadian composers, we started our season with the well-received Four Elements, by Salmon Arm composer Jean Etheridge. We performed excerpts from the Symphonie minute by José Evangelista in November, and our last concert in March featured a commissioned piece by composer Katia Makdissi-Warren and Indigenous artist Csetkwe Fortier. This collaborative work Whispers of the Mountain featured Csetkwe singing and included the participation of Charli Fortier on the traditional hand drum. Over the season, we hosted remarkable soloists such as the stellar Timothy Chooi in the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, guitarist Thierry Bégin-Lamontagne in the beloved Rodrigo Concierto de Aranjuez, pianist Linda Ruan in virtuosic Clara Schumann Piano Concerto, the cheerful members of Quartom for our Christmas concert, and baritone Micah Schroeder for our festive Evening at the Opera. Our own KSO musicians Elyse Jacobson and Breanne Jamieson shined in the Ethel Smyth Concerto for Violin and Horn and the KSO Chorus, under the guidance of KSO Chorus Master Tomas Bijok, provided an energetic performance of well-known opera choruses. In addition, we are proud to that two of our musicians, Assistant Concertmaster Elyse Jacobson, and Principal Second Violin Boris Ulanowicz, received tenure in their positions. Each concert of the past season was an occasion to witness the continuous artistic development of our orchestra, be it by the personality of our musicians or our common dedication to deliver uplifting orchestral performances. Particular highlights include works such as the Bizet’s Carmen Suites, Marquez’ Danzon No. 2, Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3. Finally, the acquisition of professional equipment as well as the hiring of qualified staff also contributed to our success this past year. We are grateful for the donations that allowed the orchestra to purchase our fourth timpani and a complete set of musicians' chairs and are appreciative of having the expertise of a Stage Manager at each orchestra service.

Message from the Executive Director Stepping into the role of Executive Director of the Kamloops Symphony in June 2019 has been a significant personal privilege. On the personal front, this year has been full of challenge and growth: trying to balance my new life here in Kamloops, while getting accustomed to the role and all the responsibilities that came with it. And of course, just as I thought I might be settling into the role, the year ended how none of us predicted. After a summer of working away in the office, it was a joy to finally hear the Symphony perform in September 2019 and each concert since has featured incredible moments that I will cherish. Personal highlights of my year include travelling up to 100 Mile & 108 Mile House with our musicians for our Conducting 101 Workshop, getting to know our patrons and volunteers who so passionately support the orchestra, and exploring the orchestra’s place in our local cultural fabric. On the administrative front, I was not the only new addition to the team. This year we were able to hire a new Office Administrator, Sue Adams, and a new Production Manager, Adrien Fillion, both who have brought new perspectives and expertise to our operations. Complimenting the rest of the administrative team are Ryan Noakes, Olivia Martin, Sally Arai and of course Dina Gilbert who make sure all the pieces of the puzzle fall in place behind the scenes. We also thank long-time supporter of the Symphony, Judy Wiebe, for her services as our contracted accountant, who was able to pass on the reins at the end of December 2019. And of course, I must acknowledge the Board of Directors who govern the Organization. Internally, we also made several steps to strengthen the organization, further enhancing our brand as a professional orchestra. We began the process of standardizing our visual identity, by establishing a consistent look to our documents and branding. We also made technological improvements to our office systems, which became particularly useful during a shut-down of the office in March of 2020. In terms of fund development, this was a year for us to renew our relationships with supporters and remind ourselves why they choose to support the Symphony. We were particularly proud of the fundraising initiatives that took place this year, with a record-breaking Barb’s Used Book & Music Sale, and very fruitful Mayor’s Gala for the Arts (both economically, and in terms of fun!). Although we may not have been able to finish our season as originally planned, there were plenty of steps taken that have further strengthened our organization, and we are so grateful for the community support that has kept us relevant and active in the unexpected downtime we experienced at the end of the year. We are set up well for the experimental year to come, and I feel honoured to help get the orchestra through this next transitionary phase of operations. Sincerely,
Daniel Mills Executive Director Kamloops Symphony

KSO Chorus
The KSO Chorus had another year of growth under KSO Chorus Master Tomas Bijok. They dazzled audiences as part of An Evening at the Opera in January and were diligently working on Fauré’s Requiem for an April 2020 performance when the pandemic struck. During the year, new members and more structured rehearsals meant growing the skill level and increasing collegiality. We were also thrilled the Chorus was able to put on an impromptu performance at the Mayor’s Gala for the Arts.

Education & Outreach Educational Concerts Another three educational concerts over the 20192020 Season reached over 1,300 students, by bringing them right into the Sagebrush theatre for a taste of a Classical Music. Students learned about performance practice from guest artist Thierry BĂŠgin-Lamontagne as part of LOVE! In November 2019 and learned the basics of opera as part of KSO at the Opera in January of 2020. Teacher guides were distributed in advance to all those who attended.
Conducting 101 Workshops We held another successful run of our fun and interactive program for elementary students, featuring Music Director Dina Gilbert, and seven musicians who travel into schools to give students an introduction to what goes in to being a conductor. We visited 5 elementary schools and reached over 1,100 students. Thanks to the generous support of many partners, including the Musicians Pension Trust Fund, and the Hamber Foundation, we were able to bring this show on the road to 100 Mile House & 108 Mile House in March of 2020.
Other Initiatives Throughout the Season, Music Director Dina Gilbert also participated in several workshops for those in School District No. 73, including offering a professional development workshop for music teachers in the city. We also continued our partnership with the Kamloops Performing Arts Festival, and their annual award to a promising emerging classical musician.

Kamloops Symphony Music School The Kamloops Symphony Music School had another successful year of stable growth. In the fall, we welcomed Heather Macleod to the Music Faculty, and had over 240 students pass through our door, from the ages of 3 to 83.
Although COVID-19 forced us to reexamine and reimagine our operations, thanks to the flexibility of our faculty and students, we were able to transition to an online method for the remainder of the year, with minimal loss to the student enrollment. We were able to reopen on a limited basis back in June of 2020. We saw very successful student recitals at Christmas and in February, ahead of the Kamloops Performing Arts Festival Season. In 2019-2020, we were able to create a second award from the proceeds of the Peter Collins Memorial Fund: one specifically for a student pursuing post-secondary education in Music. We were proud to announce Jas Schweitzer as the winner of the inaugural award, as part of a virtual recital that took place in June 2020.

Fundraising & Community Support 2019-2020 marked a productive year from community support. We secured over $60,000 in gifts from individuals over the year as part of our normal annual campaign and acquired many new donors. We are also very grateful for several targeted gifts, that allowed us to purchase new equipment such as a fourth timpani, new orchestral musician chairs, and to replace some of our technological systems. In addition, once COVID-19 took over and forced the cancellation of our last two concerts of the Season, we were very endeared to see how many of our ticket holders chose to donate the value of their tickets back to the organization.
Barb’s Used Book & Music Sale Barb’s Used Book & Music Sale was back and exceeded record levels of sales. Over $50,000 was raised from the November edition of the sale. Unfortunately, our spring edition of the sale was postponed due to COVID-19, however the positive results of the fall sale helped stabilize us at the end of the year.
2020 Mayor’s Gala for the Arts This annual celebration of the arts in Kamloops took place on January 18, 2020 at the Colombo Lodge, in collaboration with Western Canada Theatre and the Kamloops Art Gallery. The event sold out for the first time in years, and there was a particular buzz around the event. The Kamloops Symphony was represented well at the evening. Of particular note, all three finalists in the category of Emerging Artist were alumni of the Kamloops Symphony Music School, including clarinetist Marcella Barz. Additionally, long-time supporter and original cellist in the Kamloops Symphony, Michael Powell, won the award for Enduring Supporter for his contributions to Kamloops’ Arts Community. The KSO Chorus even made a “surprise’ pop-up performance.

Financial Position The Society has a strong financial position with cash of $124,000 and net assets of $72,600 at June 30, 2020. Revenue and expenses have decreased from the prior year due to the inability to finish our planned season. However, with the generosity of our ticket holders as well as the reduction in related production costs, the Society was able to end the year with a surplus of just under $80,000. This leaves the Society in a good position going into the 2020-2021 season. Kamloops Symphony Society Statement of Operations*
