Bob Easy has been a staple on rinks and baseball diamonds in Munster and Richmond since the 1970s. He’s also a familiar face on local ball diamonds and has been involved in fastball in Kanata for a number of years. Easy was given the Mayor’s City Builder Award Feb. 22. Easy thanked his wife for allowing him the time to help out the community he loved. “There were some weeks where she would only see me 10 hours,” he said. Easy said he didn’t do the work on his own.

new computer lab co-ordinator and instructors who can help teach older adults how to use computer programs, smartphones and tablets, such as iPads. “More seniors are getting these as gifts from their children and they don’t know what to do with them,” said Dubie, adding more than 60 people attended the computer group’s seminar and workshop last month. The cafe, open Monday to Saturday, is short cooks and volunteers to work the counter. “When the cafe opens in the morning and we only have two volunteers, we feel we have to close for the day,” said Dubie. Council president Sarah Trant, who is taking a temporary leave of absence for personal reasons, said she doesn’t want to see the programs close because both are popular services in the community. “I really believe in what the council does,” she said.

“We’ve got a café people rely on and computer lessons people can afford.” POSITIONS

The computer lab co-ordinator should have a background in technology, be able to train new instructors and organize workshops, said Dubie. The co-ordinator will oversee eight instructors and ensure the products and equipment are maintained. “We have really good equipment, we have up-to-date programs,” said Dubie, adding the council has free public access computers. “We just need somebody who’s the co-ordinator of all this.” On the kitchen side, volunteers are needed to cook, work the counter, serve coffee and bus dishes. The council provides food preparation and safety training. “The younger volunteers like to travel, they like to go away in the winter,” said Dubie. “That puts a big dent in our service.”

Sarah Trant/Submitted

Kay Dubie, director and past president of the Kanata Seniors Council, says the council is in need of more volunteers to keep its café and computer and tablet lessons running. Although the seniors council is for older adults ages 55 and up, volunteers of all ages are welcome. On average, the commitment is one day a week for four to five hours. “Ten new (volunteers) would be lovely,” said Dubie. “If you want a fulfilling way to spend your day and the opportunity to meet new friends,

why not give us a try?” For more information or to volunteer, contact Dubie by email at ked.dubie@sympatico.ca or by phone at 613270-9581. The Kanata Seniors Council and its programs are run out of the Kanata Seniors Centre, 2500 Campeau Dr. For details, visit kanataseniors.ca.

MacLaren to host property rights consultation in Kanata MPP reappointed critic of natural resources BY JESSICA CUNHA jessica.cunha@metroland.com

Carleton-Mississippi Mills MPP Jack MacLaren will host a public consultation on property rights in Kanata on Thursday, March 9. MacLaren announced the meeting and the launch of the Blue Ribbon Panel on Property Rights on March 6. “It’s a subject people have a tendency to take for granted,” said MacLaren, who was appointed chair of the property rights panel in the fall of 2015 by Ontario PC Leader Patrick

Brown. “It’s the basis of democracy and the basis of prosperity.” The Progressive Conservative MPP recruited members of the Ontario Landowners Association for his team, which includes: • Tom Black, president of the Ontario Landowners Association; • Marlene Black, editor of Landowner Magazine; • Mark Breckon, president and CEO of Fraser View Group; • Frank Burke, president of the North Renfrew United

Landowners Association; • Donna Burns, president of the Renfrew-NippissingPembroke Landowners Association; • Shirley Dolan, president of the Carleton Landowners Association; • Tim Mount, director of the Carleton Landowners Association; and • Mike Westley, director of the Carleton Landowners Association. The panel released its preliminary report in January 2017. “The objective is to develop a policy leading into the next election,” said MacLaren, adding he and his team spent the

The report says the three basic elements of property rights — the rights of possession, use and disposition — have been compromised in Ontario. “Increasingly we find that provincial legislation is drafted without a second thought for the impact it might have on your property,” states the report. The panel will develop and implement a plan to “cham-

pion the value property rights” to benefit all Ontarians and ensure the rights are respected by all levels of government, says the report. Brown reappointed MacLaren as critic for Natural Resources and Forestry for the Ontario PC Caucus on Feb. 7. “We’re kind of excited and very happy about it,” said MacLaren. “Ontario lost 10,000 jobs in the natural resource sector (last year) — that’s a lot of jobs. We’d like to see what we can do to reverse that trend.” MacLaren was first named critic for natural resources in the fall of 2015. He was removed from that role, and others, in April 2016 when Brown ordered him to undergo sensitivity training following inappropriate comments MacLaren made at a charity event in Carp.

The city is looking for feedback on two design concepts for the Andrew Haydon Park’s play structure renewal. Comments are due by March 13.

LD

It’s time for the nautical play structure in Andrew Haydon Park to be renewed. And the city is looking for input on the theme and design for the upper playground, which can be seen from Carling Avenue. “I took my kids there, my two daughters who are 22 and 15 now,” said Bay Coun. Mark Taylor, adding it’s the same play structure they used when they were toddlers. “It’s at least 20 years old, barring the odd individual feature that may have been replaced when it was broken.” The park was inherited from Nepean in the west end, near the Nepean Sailing Club. It’s what Taylor calls a regional destination park. There are a number of different structures in the park, including the Nepean Kiwanis Bandshell. The two different options for the play structure renewal include a marine theme

this spring, but some design tweaks could be made through the summer, Taylor said. The budget for the project is $365,000. The price includes testing, inspection, consultation and construction costs. “By spring of next year, kids will be able to play on the new stuff.” Taylor said comments on the project have been slow to trickle in, but he expects people from across the city will want to have their say. “It’s fairly early in the process. Typically, you have to do a bit of nudging,” Taylor said. Comments on the renewal will be accepted until March 13. and one called shipshape. Shipshape includes a big ship for the playground structure. The marine theme includes a junior structure that’s a smaller ship and also a whale-shaped climber. “The play structure in there has just become old and worn and tired and there’s some pieces we had to decommission because they were splintering and stuff like that, so it’s time for new,” he said. Taylor said he has a favourite, but ultimately just wants to see families using the park. “I’m most anxious to see the thing renewed and see kids playing on it again,” he said. The current structure will remain this spring and summer and work is scheduled for around October and November, depending on the weather. City staff will make a decision on what to tender

Drug testing can save lives

N

ever have we known such gargantuan problems due to something so small. Fentanyl is a strong opioid – 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine. Minuscule doses of the drug can kill. On Feb. 27, the city’s deputy police chief told a Kanata audience that enforcement will not keep the scourge of fentanyl from our streets. When thousands of doses of a drug can be imported in a single envelope, complete eradication is beyond any agency. But all is not lost, and we don’t have to throw our hands up in the air and simply hope no one else dies from an overdose of opioids. We do have some tools available to reduce the harm. Education is job one. The people most at risk need to know that any drug that they buy from illicit sources may contain opioids like fentanyl. One dose can kill. A few doses can create an addiction, even if the user has no idea there is fentanyl mixed into their counterfeit pills or powders. That message should reach everyone in the city, starting with children. The school boards are clearly redoubling their efforts to make sure students know the risks. Secondly, naloxone – the medication that can reverse an opioid overdose – should be made as

widely available as possible. The city plans to have doses in every fire and police vehicle. The province has made naloxone freely available. If someone still chooses to consume a drug – and that would be a bad decision – we can make the outcome less risky if we allow them to test their drugs for fentanyl. Test kits exist. If one of our levels of government makes them available to would-be drug users, those people can find out if there is fentanyl in a drug they have purchased. A user who sees a positive result for fentanyl can avoid potential death or addiction. And at the same time, they learn that the person who sold them that pill or powder cannot be trusted. Drug testing like this has been offered at some concert festivals in the past, and it is controversial. Some will say testing condones or encourages drug use. But which is better: 1,000 people use drugs at a festival and one dies, or 1,000-plus people use drugs at a festival and no one dies? That’s the crux of harm reduction. It’s why we provide free needles to IV drug addicts. It’s what the Insite safe-injection site in Vancouver does. It simply saves lives. Drug-testing kits have potential. They should be part of the discussion.

Chasing away aging with healthy living

H

ave you heard about the 105-year-old French cyclist who broke a world record in February? Robert Marchand completed 22 kilometres in 60 minutes, setting the world record for cyclists 105 and older. Who knew such a thing existed? Between you and me, I’m not sure I could ride 22 kilometres in an hour and I’m less than half this guy’s age. That he broke the record, however, is not the most remarkable thing about Marchand — a former trucker, gardener and lumberjack who’s been retired for more than a quarter-century. A two-year study examining Marchand’s exceptional physical health determined that he’s actually become healthier since he turned 103 years old. This is unprecedented. Prior to

I don’t know about you, but the moment I read that, I decided it was time to get my 30-somethingyear-old butt off my office chair and return to the gym with vigour. I may not have Marchand’s genetics, nor am I the same gender, and I probably don’t have the same social contacts and positive outlook on life that may have helped him to become a centenarian in the first place. But my thought was, if this old guy can do it, why not me? There’s enough evidence out there to show that sleep, a healthy diet and regular exercise will slow the aging process. Marchand, who apparently eats a simple diet of dairy, chicken and a daily glass of red wine (love this guy), has proven that we can possibly reverse the aging process if we’re diligent about doing the right things for our bodies. RCMP looking for kids to submit names for 14 horses STAFF

It’s time to name that foal. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police has opened up its naming contest again this year, in the hopes that kids 14 and younger can help name 14 foals born at the RCMP breeding farm in Pakenham. According to a press release, a winner will be selected from each of the 13 provinces and territories. The final name will be chosen from entries submitted by a school class. “Here's a chance for kids to be a part of history, by coming up with a name for one of the 14 foals," said Insp. Patrick Egan, officer in charge of the musical ride, in the release. "This year, with adding the school class entries, it gives a

great opportunity for students to work together and come up with a name.” To enter, names must begin with the letter “O”. The entry must include a child’s first name only, school, city, province or territory and an email address. School entries must include the teacher’s name, school, city, province or territory and an email address. All entrants must be 14 years old or younger, and only one entry is allowed per child. Online entries must be received no later than April 30.

Winning names are chosen by instructors of the RCMP musical ride branch, and the winners and names will be announced in May on the RCMP website. "We look forward to meet-

ing some of the winners during this year's cross-country tour in celebration of Canada's 150th birthday. The tour will include visits to all 10 provinces and one territory," said Egan. "Get your entries in and you can

play a role in the musical ride of the future." Those whose names are chosen will receive prizes, including a 2017 Musical Ride pennant, a framed photo of the foal, a Tshirt and pins.

Entries can be submitted to rcmp-grc.gc.ca/en/name-foalcontest or by mail to Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Musical Ride Branch, c/o RCMP Name the Foal Contest, P.O. Box 8900, Ottawa, Ont., K1G 3J2.

Birth centre celebrates three years with funding announcement BY BRIER DODGE brier.dodge@metroland.com

There have been lots of literal birth days at the Ottawa Birthing and Wellness Centre in south Ottawa. But they celebrated their third birthday with an announcement from MPP John Fraser about an increase in provincial funding for midwifery. Midwives, parents and children born at the centre celebrated the third birthday party for the centre, which features birthing suites that women can give birth in with support from a midwife. Fraser announced that Ontario will fund midwifery practices with an additional $27.3 million in 2017. The funds will allow another 87 midwives to practise in Ontario. Almost 600 babies have been born at the centre in the three years it’s been open, with people travelling from all over the city and further to give birth at the centre. Laura St. Cyr has had two babies at the birthing centre, after starting with a doctorbased birth plan but deciding

She had such a good experience with her first labour, a water birth, that she returned when she was pregnant a sec-

ond time to give birth again. A new practice in Ottawa has received funding and joined in on the celebrations. The Community Midwives of Ottawa are based out of the Ottawa Birthing and Wellness Centre, and began taking patients in August 2016. Before the Community Midwives of Ottawa started, there were midwives with privileges to be able to use the centre, but no midwives that were based out of the birthing centre and delivering pre-natal care on site. Ola Levitin, a midwife with the group, said women choose to give birth outside of the hospital “because they believe birth is a normal physiological experience and they’re not ill.” The fact that the centre can facilitate water births, which the hospitals in Ottawa do not, is also a bonus for some of the mothers who choose to give birth. Birthing suites at the centre have birthing tubs and large beds and are available to mothers having a low-risk pregnancy and giving birth with a midwife. In 2016, midwives attended approximately 22,554 births, according to the province.

Stains and how to treat it! CARPET STAIN REMOVERS • Rub light carpet stains with a mixture of 2 tablespoons salt dissolved in 1/2 cup white vinegar. Let the solution dry, then vacuum. • Larger or darker stains, add 2 tablespoons borax to the mixture and use in the same way. • Tough, ground-in dirt and other stains, make a paste of 1 tablespoon vinegar with 1 tablespoon cornstarch, and rub it into the stain using a dry cloth. Let it set for two days, then vacuum. • Spilled paint, use a solution of 1 1/2 teaspoons vinegar, 1 1/2 teaspoons laundry detergent, and two cups water, sponge away the paint before it sets in and rinse with cold water.

• Fruit or juice stains, blot the stain, pat it with a wet sponge, squirt some shaving cream on it, and then wipe clean with • Gum - freeze gum with ice cubes in a plastic bag, then lift it off with a safe tool such as spoon - blot with a ‘dry cleaning fluid’ • Pet Urine - blot up excess urine first with paper towel, then pour club soda onto the stain and blot again and clean with a carpet shampoo

a damp sponge. Shaving cream also works great on grease and oil stains; simply work the cream into the stain, let dry, and rub off with a damp soft cloth. • Ink stains, mix milk with cornstarch to make a paste. Apply the paste to the ink stain. Allow the homemade concoction to dry on the carpet for a few hours, then brush off the dried residue and vacuum it up. Cornstarch is also great for soaking up grease and oil stains. Sprinkle the spots liberally, let sit for several hours, and vacuum up. • Greasy food stains, mix up 1 part salt to 4 parts rubbing alcohol and rub it hard on the grease stain, being careful to rub in the direction of the rug’s natural nap. • Can’t tell what the stain is? Mix a teaspoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide with a dab of non-gel toothpaste. Rub the paste on the stain with a soft cloth. Rinse.

• Ink - spray WD-40 onto stain, wait a couple of minutes, then clean with carpet cleaner or warm soapy water. • Red Wine - pour white wine onto stain to dilute the colour, then blot clean with a clean cloth and water. After, pour salt onto the stain and let sit for approximately. 10 mins. then vacuum.

• Coffee/Tea - Beer believe it or not works on coffee/tea stains. Pour beer on to stain and rug it out gently with a clean cloth. Repeat if necessary. • Blood - cover stain with equal parts cold water and meat tenderizer and let stand for 30 mins. Then clean with cold water.

Calling all redheads. The Irish Society of the National Capital Region is looking for individuals with the rarest hair colour out there — red — to participate in this year’s annual St. Patrick’s Parade on March 11. Involvement is up to the gingerhaired participant — volunteer, watch from the route, or take part in the parade. The parade begins at city hall and follows a route along Bank Street to Aberdeen Pavilion, at Lansdowne Park. Currently, the society is looking for more parade marshals to help out. According to organizer Lauren Strevens O’Neil, marshals are needed all along the route. “We do also have a need for some banner-carriers, Strevens O’Neil. “Some energetic folks who are willing and able to walk the parade route carrying our sponsors' banners. Aside from banner-carriers, the parade also collects food and money donations for the Ottawa Food Bank. All volunteers must be 16 years or

older — students can earn up to six hours of volunteer hours. Volunteers can register at city hall at 8 a.m. on March 11. Interested individuals can contact volunteersisncr@gmail.com. The annual parade celebrates Irish culture and heritage every year during the Ottawa Irish Festival, which ends at the Grand Irish Party. Beau’s All Natural Brewing has partnered with the society to create the second annual Beau’s St. Patrick’s Party. The Irish Society, along with other Irish organizations in Ottawa, host a variety of events across the city embracing Irish culture during the Ottawa Irish Festival. The festival begins with a proclamation at by Mayor Jim Watson on March 9 at city hall. Refreshments and live entertainment will be available between 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Over events include: • The Rose of Tralee Ottawa Centre holds its selection on March 12. • On March 14, see musicians Matt Cranitch and Jackie Daly in the pub at St Brigid’s Centre for the Arts For full event details and more information about the festival, visit irishsocietyncr.com.

t wasn’t as if Emerson had done some dastardly deed like stealing money out of the sugar bowl, but what he did earned him a sound cuff on the ear from Mother. What he did was say, “God, I sure would like a real hockey stick, instead of the one Father made out of a piece of wood. It wasn’t that wanting the hockey stick got him into trouble; it was saying “God outside of praying. It was a sin to take God’s name in vain, and Mother wouldn’t tolerate it, and that’s all there was to it. Mother didn’t say a word. She didn’t have to. The cuff on the ear said it all. And yet, it seemed to me, as I watched Emerson take his punishment, that adults were forgiven for taking the Lord’s name in vain. Father never quite got the word God out. He would say, “by gad, which to me was too close to the actual word for comfort. And as I sat and thought about all the

MARY COOK Memories ways God’s name was worked into everyday conversations, I had a very hard time figuring out what was right and what was wrong — and then there were the times when it seemed perfectly normal.

For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out why God would object to our going anywhere. Mother had a host of sayings all relating to God’s mercy, such as the time old Granny Hines died. Mother clutched her breast with her right hand, then made the sign of the cross, and in a solemn voice said, “God rest her weary soul. I

Mother saying, “God willing. For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out why God would object to our going anywhere. And “if God favours was another of Mother’s favourite expressions, or “if God allows, as if there was some doubt in

her mind as to where we would all be in a few days hence. Hardly a day went by that Mother didn’t say, “Only God knows, used when she couldn’t come up with a reason or something had been mislaid. But, what terrified me the most was when a neighbour came to visit who was said to be the biggest gossip in the county. She was an enormous woman, and when she was telling a story — usually one hard to believe — she would clutch her chest and say, “If that isn’t the truth, may God strike me dead. Well, that sent chills right up my back. And I would pray silently that what she said was the gospel truth. I wasn’t as concerned about her expiring as I was about how we would get her out of the house. Certainly, no one could lift her. And I had visions of Father bringing the stoneboat up to the back door, and with the help of my three brothers, rolling her across the kitchen

floor, and out the back door and onto the stoneboat. When I talked to my older and much wiser sister Audrey about the God issue, and asked why Mother called upon Him so often, she said it had everything to do with what she called an abiding faith. “Faith I knew. “Abiding was a new word for me, and I looked it up in my little red dictionary and found it meant enduring and lasting, and it was then I knew why Mother so often worked God’s name into whatever she was saying. It was simply because back then, when every day was a struggle to make ends meet, we certainly needed God to survive from one day to the next. Audrey said His mercy was enduring and lasting, and that made perfect sense to me. Back then, there wasn’t too much we could depend on. So, it wasn’t hard to understand why God was called upon so often. We needed all the help we could get.

Favourite backwoods comedy returns to Kanata SUBMITTED BY JIM HOLMES

By any measure, Norm Foster is Canada’s and Kanata Theatre’s favourite playwright. Foster’s early hit comedy The Melville Boys now joins the select group of plays Kanata Theatre has seen fit to repeat. What is it that puts this play in the company of The Importance of Being Earnest, Noises Off, You Can’t Take It With You, Harvey and The Waltz of the Toreadors as pieces Kanata Theatre wished to return to? The Melville Boys is early proof of Foster’s uncanny ability to connect with every audience. That ability probably stems from

an intuition for plot and dialogue that has been felt rather than learned and that is charged with that increasingly rare commodity, truth. As he himself has said: “I wrote that play from pure instinct and raw emotion. I could not write the play today because I know too much about the ‘craft’ of writing now.” In The Melville Boys, Foster’s favourite themes of sex, booze and death are not far below the surface, but the overwhelming emphasis is on comedy. Not cheap comedy, but comedy arising naturally from character and situation. It is not an exaggeration to say that

Norm Foster has been the saviour of Canadian regional theatre. Since 1984, Foster has written over 50 plays which have been performed from coast to coast in Canada as well as in the U.S. Foster has helped our regional and community theatres maintain a Canadian identity. For 20 years running, his plays have been the most-produced in Canada. The Norm Foster Theatre Festival in St. Catharines is the first to honour the work of a Canadian playwright. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in December 2016. Kanata Theatre’s connection with Norm Foster has been a long one. Fit-

tingly, his saucy first play, Sinners was Kanata Theatre’s first Norm Foster. His second, The Melville Boys was also Kanata Theatre’s second Foster. Steve Truelove directs Kanata Theatre’s new production of The Melville Boys. Truelove has been active in most aspects of Kanata Theatre’s backstage life for many years, especially in the areas of stage management and lighting design. He played the role of Medvedenko in the company’s awardwinning production of Chekhov’s The Seagull. A mix of new and familiar faces will bring The Melville Boys to life in the Ron Maslin Playhouse. Renaud as Owen appears for the fifth time on the Kanata stage. Most recently, he played multiple roles in November’s Equivocation. Solly Balbaa, who plays Owen’s brother Lee, was also many characters in Equivocation. Balbaa has spent the past 11 years as an actor, director and writer, and has appeared in more than 40 short films, four feature films and ten plays. Stephanie Beaulne brings to the role of Mary, her first for Kanata Theatre, experience gained in theatre companies throughout Ontario from Thunder Bay to Toronto to Ottawa. She has appeared in several awardwinning short films. Also in her first Kanata show is Shauna MacEachern as Loretta. She began acting in high school and remembers fondly her first stage role in Anne of Green Gables. From Sea To Sea To Sea on May 13 at Glen Cairn United Church SUBMITTED

When one thinks of Canada, water likely appears as a mental image. Rightly so. Canada has the largest amount of fresh water in the world and it is bordered by three oceans. Thoughts of water automatically bring forth the rhythm of waves lapping the shore and paddles digging deep. Nature sets a pace either calming and reflective or loud and stormy, each with its own message. Our waterways are highways to the interior, providers of food, visions to delight and a resource to cherish. It’s no wonder that much of the music written about this vast country is about oceans, lakes and rivers. This spring, the West Ottawa Ladies Chorus’ spring concert will celebrate our waterways, its diverse peoples, looming mountains and vast plains. Robert Dueck, Direc-

tor of the West Ottawa Ladies Chorus (WOLC) has captured the flavour of our country by selecting some songs about the waters of Canada — waters lapping, running, raging, threatening, calming and entertaining. In three and four part harmony the chorus will celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday through song. He has chosen pieces that celebrate our people, our landscape, our culture and our history. Away From the Roll of the Sea by Allister MacGillivray is a rolling tune describing boats at rest in the harbour. It connects with almost any group or any age. The words imply more than one meaning — on the surface they state that no one can know by simply looking at the boats in safe harbour what adventures or hardships they have endured. MacGillivray noted that his song was written in response to a photo of Glace Bay Harbour (Cape

Breton), as taken by noted photographer Warren Gordon. “I wanted to write a song with no people in it, only boats at rest, he said. Popular on the west coast as well as the east, this is truly a Canadian song. That ever-intriguing invitation of go west young man is told in Four Strong Winds by Ian Tyson when a young man goes to Alberta. A folksong out of Quebec tells of loading logs on a rail car called a donkey. And of course we celebrate our national sport, hockey — all in song. And there is more, much more with music and narration at the concert From Sea To Sea To Sea on May 13 at Glen Cairn United Church, 140 Abbeyhill Dr., Kanata at 7 p.m. From Sea To Sea To Sea is an Ontario 150 sponsored event. City hosts Canada Games Council to show off all Ottawa has to offer BY MELISSA MURRAY mmurray@metroland.com

There can only be one winner. The Canada Games Council visited Ottawa on March 2, touring several of the city’s facilities that make up Ottawa’s bid for the 2021 summer games. The visit was the last step in the bid process before the council selects the host city for the games. “It’s like sports; there can only be one successful person and that’s the unfortunate part because really all four communities can do a great job,” Wayne Carew, chair of the Canada Games Council, said during his visit to the city. The committee started its week in Sudbury, then visited Kitchener and Waterloo, the Niagara region and finally made its way to Ottawa. “We are pretty excited about what we’ve seen and what we are going to see for the rest of the day,” Carew said at a break for lunch at the Nepean Sailing Club. Carew said he enjoyed the tour of Carleton University’s campus, which would be home to the athlete’s village. “It’s a beautiful campus; it’s very compact for the athletes and the games are all about the athletes so that’s what we kind of look for,” he said.

As much as the day was about checking out the facilities to make sure that they can accommodate the 270 summer events and more than 3,400 athletes, the visit is also about meeting the people in the community and those that will run the games. The members of the council have previously spent nine to 10 hours reading the city’s submission. “This isn’t about the paper, it’s about the people. We’ve read the paper. We want to meet the

of the city’s bid during the tour. “I feel very confident, but it’s in the hands of the committee and we’re just trying to showcase some of the great venues that we have,” he said. He said the city does face a bit of a challenge as it would be the largest city to ever host the Canada Games. “That’s the one challenge we have to overcome to let them know that while we may be a big city of a million, we are also a city that’s made up of dozens

people that are going to make a commitment to put the games on,” Carew said. After the visit, the committee will rescore each potential host city before making its recommendation to the national board. A final decision on who will host the 18-day, 2021 summer games will be made in Toronto on March 30 with representatives from each city in attendance. Mayor Jim Watson said the committee saw a cross-section of the venues and the highlights

of smaller communities.” Hosting the games could cost as much as $43 million, but the city’s portion would be $10.5 million. The games would also mean about $8 million in facility upgrades. The bulk of the funds would go to spruce up the Nepean Sportsplex – to the tune of $5.8 million. The Terry Fox Athletics facility would get a $1 million facelift. - With files from Jennifer McIntosh

HEALTH

Connected to your community

My story: working on health Following on from our last article, here is another personal ‘health’ experience from someone in our community. We present it here as an unbiased account of the power of a healthy diet on one’s life. Needless to say, we agree wholeheartedly with what she has to say. Jake Cole & Allen Coldham There is nothing special about me. I am your average 57-yearold woman. I am not sick with any affliction, except for postconcussion syndrome from a nasty fall in 2015. I am not on any medication and I am not expecting to get sick from any diseases any time soon. Of course, nature might have different ideas — but not if I can help it. In the fall of 2011 I decided

to start working with a health coach for two reasons. First, I wanted to lose weight. Second, I wanted more information on how to eat healthier. I was thinking a lot about my future and how I wanted to live a long and healthy life, not a long and prescription-assisted, chronically ill life. I know that people are living longer, but not necessarily living longer and healthier. I started working with health coach Donnalyn Murphy. She was the catalyst that moved me to a plant-based way of eating. I worked with Donnalyn for about one year. In that time she taught me much about nutrition. She also provided an incredible amount of resources about whole food plant based (WFPB) eating, a treasure trove

24 Kanata Kourier-Standard - Thursday, March 9, 2017

of research information supporting this way of eating, along with the names of doctors, nutritionists, scientists and other professionals who had published peer-reviewed evidence-based research. The scientific evidence that is available to support this way of eating is astonishing. Just look at Dr. Michael Greger’s website nutritionfacts.org for a small sampling. By the spring of 2012 I was ready to try changing my diet, but now it wasn’t to lose weight, it was to maintain and improve my health. So, I decided to try the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine’s (PCRM) 21-day Vegan kick-start. That was the starting point for me. From then on I’ve been progressing toward a WFPB diet, I’m at

about 90 per cent right now. I do fall off the WFPB wagon from time to time, cheese is my Achilles heel. My goal is to eventually be 100 per cent WFPB and no oil. A big part of my success in maintaining a WFPB way of eating is that my partner and I support each other in this process. He also follows a WFPB diet and has seen remarkable results. Over these past six years I have learned so much about the science and nutrition that supports this way of eating that I cannot even imagine going back to eating meat. Initially my motivation was for better health, but I have to say now my motivation also includes environmental and animal-cruelty issues. See DIET, page 25

Once you know the truth about the violence in animal agriculture — you can never not know. Suddenly bacon becomes the sounds of pigs screaming for their lives. I am not a radical, or someone who preaches about this way of eating. Anyone interested can ask me any question they like, I will gladly answer, but I will not judge or preach. Everyone starts somewhere. Do I feel better after eating this way? Absolutely! The mid-afternoon fatigue is gone and I don’t feel as sluggish as I used to. So my changes haven’t been earth shattering, mostly peace of mind that I am taking care of myself and doing what I can to live long and healthy. And I still don’t take any medications — which apparently is unusual for a woman my age. In June 2016 I had the great privilege to meet a woman who told me her story of surviv-

ing stage 4 cancer by adopting a WFPB diet. Her story appeared in the last column of this series. This has inspired me. I have read a lot of stories about how this way of eating has changed lives, but I had never met anyone who saved their life by removing animal protein from their diet. Meeting that lady changed my understanding of the power of a WFPB diet. Imagine, all the loved ones who could be with us now. Imagine the quality of life we could live if not riddled with chronic disease and prescription drug side effects. But I digress. The resources that have had the most impact on me are as follows: Donnalyn Murphy, Heart and Soul Health Coaching The China Study by T. Colin Campbell Becoming Vegan, Express Edition by Brenda Davis Dr. Michael Greger’s daily videos and book How Not to Die

Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease by Dr. Caldwell B Esselstyn, Jr. The Starch Solution by Dr. John MacDougal Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and Dr Neal Barnard The Spectrum by Dr. Dean Ornish Forks Over Knives, documentary Plant Pure Nation, documentary The Plant-Based Journey by Lani Muelrath My favourite saying is by Dr. Caldwell B Esselstyn, Jr: “Genetics loads the gun, diet and lifestyle pull the trigger” If anyone wants more information about being whole food plant based or would like more resources, they can contact me at wfpbottawa@gmail.com. If you have a health story that you would like to tell through our health series, please feel free to contact us. — Jake and Al colejster@gmail.com acoldham@icloud.com

DRUG OVERDOSE IN OUR COMMUNTIY – The community meeting last week demonstrated the concern of many parents about the use of drugs by their children, leading to addiction and sometimes death. Since August counterfeit pills manufactured to look like prescription opioids have been in Ottawa. These pills may have illicit fentanyl added to them, significantly increasing the risk of overdose or death. Many at the meeting were anxious to get help for their children with heartbreaking stories from those who have lost a child due to these drugs. The City has a limited role in meeting these needs so we need to work with our federal and provincial governments to increase services and make them more accessible. At the same time the police are continuing investigations, have recently made a number of arrests and the school police officers are assisting schools in getting out the word about these deadly drugs. Parents can phone Ottawa Public Health and speak with a nurse to find out where help is available. The Youth Services Bureau has a 24 hour crisis line, 613-260-2360 and an online chat room. I am supportive of parents setting up self-help groups or other actions that will help our youth survive. For more information go to www.StopOverdoseOttawa.ca and www.Ottawa.ca/health OTTAWA HI TECH MISSION TO TORONTO - This week I had the pleasure of joining a delegation to Queen’s Park that met with Ministers of the Government of Ontario in support of high-tech initiatives and opportunities for Ottawa. The trip was to implement my motion on autonomous vehicles that Council approved last fall, as well as get support for next-generation networks. The delegation was led by Mayor Jim Watson and Sir Terry Matthews, of Wesley Clover International and included many Kanata North businesses that are world leaders in these areas. THE CITY’S OF OTTAWA SPRING ACTIVITIES - Enrollment for Spring activities is underway this week. Don’t forget to sign up soon as many activities fill up quickly. Check the Ottawa.ca website for registration information. WOMEN ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT A CAREER IN POLICE SERVICES – The Ottawa Police are holding an information session on March 18 for women only. The sessions will be held at Algonquin College Woodroffe Campus, P Building. For more information please visit the Ottawa Police website. KANATA NORTH COMMUNITY AWARDS for Citizen, Senior, Youth and Organization of the Year are now being accepted. About 35 people went to city hall for a public consultation on Stage 2 LRT during an interactive session taking questions from the audience, a satellite location at Hunt ClubRiverside Park Community Centre and from Facebook.

At a city hall public information session on the second stage of the light rail plan, residents peppered staff with questions ranging from the 16-month shut down of the Trillium Line to the need for more public consultation. “Why does the city want to rush through this process? What is the big urgency? We need more consultations, especially in the west end,” one resident Anna Bevilacqua

asked on Facebook. Coun. Stephen Blais, chair of the city's transportation commission, said the city has held more than two dozen public consultations. The March 1 meeting was hosted following the finance and economic development committee's approval of the project's procurement process on Feb. 24. Council will have the final say on March 8. In the Champlain room at city hall, about 35 people came to listen to Chris Swail,

Concerns arise about possible 16-month closure of O-Train Continued from page 31

The city has identified eight potential locations. However, the National Capital Commission will have to approve any location on their land. Swail said as many as five of those proposed locations have been struck down by the commission already. “We’ll end up with three that we’ll go out and talk to the public about,” he said. If an appropriate location can’t be found, that facility will have to wait until the line gets extended to Kanata. The move to go to Moodie was applauded by Bill Fen-

of the line. That information only came out on Feb. 17 during the technical briefing and for the new plan. Swail said the rationale is tied to not just extending the line, but also enhancing it. “We’re hearing from people because it’s new,” he said of the plan to stop operations for a year and four months. “We want to have a train that actually runs on a schedule.” The shutdown also has a lot to do with the procurement plan. Whoever is chosen for the project will be

ton, a member of the Crystal Beach Lakeview Community Association. “It’s a great decision to go to Moodie,” he said. Following the meeting, he added, “The access to recreation and the greenbelt just brings the whole city together.” According to GloucesterSouthgate Coun. Diane Deans, many people at the satellite location were concerned about the proposed 16-month closure of the OTrain. Previously, said Swail, the city was proposing two consecutive summer shutdowns

responsible for the quality of the overall system. “In order to improve the quality of the overall system, we simply need more time to ensure ourselves that we are giving the people bidding on the job the time required to do all that additional work.”

Many people at the satellite consult location were concerned about the proposed 16-month closure of the O-Train, according to Gloucester-Southgate Coun. Diane Deans. Metroland file photo

Earl of March tackles The Mystery Of Edwin Drood SUBMITTED

Since opening its doors more than 40 years ago, Earl of March Secondary School has developed a reputation for producing top-quality musical theatre. This year, staff and students at the Kanata-based high school hope to continue this tradition with their production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood, slated for early April.

Based on the final and unfinished novel by Charles Dickens, this comedic Broadway musical-within-a-musical by Rupert Holmes employs a unique solution to the story by having the audience vote on how it should end. The result is a hilarious chooseyour-own-ending musical with over 200 possible conclusions. The opening performance will take place Thursday, April 6, at 7 p.m. (doors open

Member of Parliament Kanata-Carleton Community Health Update

I would like to send my sincere appreciation to city councillors Shad Qadri, Allan Hubley, Marianne Wilkinson, Eli El-Chantiry, and Scott Moffatt for organizing an information session on the recent surge in reported drug overdoses among youth in the city. It is so important to talk about and understand the challenges that our parents and youth are facing, and to provide the necessary resources to help. There is much we can do to help each other.

I had the incredible opportunity to help select the student-designed flag from St. Michael School in Fitzroy Harbour that will accompany Bear Witness Expedition Director David Read and his team as they circumnavigate Bylot Island this April, in Canada’s arctic. This semester, students at St. Michael School have been learning all about Canada’s arctic, its inhabitants, wildlife and the challenges we face from a changing climate. The expedition is taking place to help celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary as a testament to our nation’s history of exploration. Congratulations to all the students who took part, all the flags were exceptional!

The Latest Hydro Hoax

Only low polling numbers could have convinced the government to do something about the crippling price of hydro.

The government has proposed a 17% reduction in hydro bills. This will result in some small savings in the short term. But the long-term cost will be an extra $14 billion – paid for by our taxes for decades to come. This is outrageous, and it won’t solve the problem. The Green Energy Act is the problem. We need to abolish the Green Energy Act. We need to use more of our cheap and clean hydro power. We need to stop signing more and more expensive contracts for wind and solar energy that we don’t need. The next election can’t come soon enough!

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Police officer faces manslaughter charge BY MELISSA MURRAY mmurray@metroland.com

An Ottawa police officer is charged with manslaughter in the death of a Somali-Canadian man in Hintonburg this summer. On top of the manslaughter charge, Const. Daniel Montsion also faces one count of aggravated assault and one count of assault with a weapon. The charges came about eight months after the death of Abdirahman Abdi outside his apartment on Hilda Street following a confrontation with police on July 24. His death prompted an investigation by the Special Investigations Unit — a civilian police watchdog. News of the charges came on March 6. That morning, according to the Abdi family’s lawyer, Lawrence Greenspon, the family met with a representative from the SIU and two Crown attorneys who told the family of the forthcoming charges. “It has been a long and difficult wait for the family,” Greenspon said. “They are pleased that the investigation has finally concluded.” He added the family awaits the results of the criminal trial with the understanding that the next step is going to be a long one. “These are serious charges, the family is happy the investigation has been completed and we can move to the next stage.” Greenspon added the charges were to be laid that afternoon and Montsion was expected to turn himself in, before being released on conditions. His first court appearance is scheduled for March 29. The family will launch a civil case within the two year time frame required and will be looking for damages for loss of care, guidance and companionship, Greenspon said. “This has been extremely difficult not only do

they have incredible grief … it’s magnified because the public light shed on this tragedy for eight months now,” he said. “They continue to weather the storm.” In response to a question about precedent, Greenspon referenced the Sammy Yatim case in Toronto, where the teenaged boy was Tasered and shot nine times in a street car in 2013. The officer involved in that case was charged with seconddegree murder. He was ultimately convicted of attempted murder in 2016 and sentenced to six years in prison. “I don’t believe there have been an awful lot of

these serious charges being laid against police officers; it’s not a first, but it’s not a common occurrence for sure,” Greenspon said. Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau said in a press release he will not comment on the details of the case. “It is important that we remain patient and respectful of the judicial process that is now underway,” he said in the statement. “What I can say is that the officer involved, like any member of the community going through a similar process, deserves to be treated fairly.” The statement goes on to say that Abdi’s death

Each week, a lawyer from the Kanata based Allan Snelling law firm will answer a reader’s question. A weekly guide in legal matters

A bedrock principle of corporate law is that, subject to some exceptions, the officers, directors and shareholders of a limited liability corporation are shielded from personal liability for the debts and obligations of the corporation. This limited liability shield distinguishes a corporation from other forms of business entities including proprietorships and partnerships. Suppose your business is the retail sale of imported furniture. You purchase and pay for the furniture from your supplier and have the furniture delivered to your customer directly from the supplier. The furniture is delivered badly damaged, is not accepted by the customer, and your customer demands return of the monies paid. You seek compensation from your supplier but find out your supplier is bankrupt. You do not have the money to refund the customer. Are your home and other personal assets exposed to the customer’s claims?

Q: I’ve read that incorporation of my new business venture is a good asset protection strategy. How does incorporation protect my home and personal assets?

If your business is incorporated, you rely on the protection of limited liability to shield your home and other personal assets.

Dr. Graeme Ferguson

has been difficult on the entire community, including the police service. He said they continue to work on building relationships of trust and confidence. After announcing the charges in a press release, the SIU said it would not make further comment as the case is now before the courts. Abdi’s death sparked protests in Ottawa, Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver and Montreal, with protesters calling for charges against the officers involved in the case, public release of the full SIU report, the release of all race-based data by the SIU and more.

Allan Snelling LLP is Kanata’s full-service law firm. Collaborative in approach and focused on solutions, our dedicated team of lawyers and support staff are committed to client satisfaction. We recognize that each client is unique and our firm has been structured to meet the diverse legal needs of every person and business in Kanata and the surrounding community.

About J. Robert Allan

Robert Allan obtained his Bachelor of Commerce Degree (Honours) from Carleton University in 1983. He was awarded his law degree from Osgoode Hall in 1986 and was called to the bar in 1988. With his 25 years of experience Robert’s approach is simple and direct: Get it done right and deliver value that exceeds the price of the service. His primary focus is business enablement and transactions, and wealth preservation.

By contrast, had you carried on business as a proprietorship, your home and other personal assets would be fully exposed to the customer’s claims. There are exceptions. You cannot rely on corporate protection to shield yourself from your own unlawful or tortious acts. You must ensure that your contracts clearly identify the corporation as the contracting party. There are also statutory exceptions that may expose directors to claims, such as claims by CRA for the failure to remit HST or make employee source deductions. Use of a limited liability corporation is an important tool that limits exposure of your home and other personal assets. Your professional advisors can inform you how to fully utilize the advantages of incorporation, and on the use of other strategies to limit or legally avoid other risks including the use of properly structured contracts and appropriate insurance.
