Kanata singer-songwriter releasing first album 11-year-old has impressive list of performances on her resume BY JESSICA CUNHA jessica.cunha@metroland.com

An 11-year-old singersongwriter from Kanata will release her first CD of original music on July 9. Marlayah McLeod, who goes by the stage name Miss McLeod, wrote, sang and performed most of the instrumentals on the five-song EP. “I just want other people to see how my music is and get a taste of it,” said the Bridlewood girl. “Music brings me happiness and I want it to bring other people happiness.” Admission to the release party, to be held at Bridlewood Community Church, is a non-perishable donation for the Kanata Food Cupboard. Any proceeds from CD sales will also be donated to the organization. “I want to help people,” said Marlayah. “I know that there’s a lot of people that

don’t have food.” Marlayah, who graduated Grade 6 at Bridlewood Community School and will attend Glen Cairn Public School this fall, will perform a few of her songs at the CD release party. Her brother Maxwell will open the show with his band. Marlayah started seriously performing last year after taking part in a Blues in the Schools camp. “She wrote her first song (at the camp) with a group of

‘I’m going to be the first strongest runner in the world’ Continued from page 1

The Bridlewood runner – who owns an extensive collection of Disney movies and can quote characters from any film – said he’s going to channel his inner Dash Parr, the young superhero with superhuman speed from the animated picture The Incredibles. Des Brisay uses bits from Disney films to relate what he’s feeling and thinking. “I decided to be like Dash Incredible,” he said. “I must find some way to be the first

toughest runner in the world.” Sometimes he says he wants to be the fastest runner, or the happiest or the strongest. The words change, but his passion for running doesn’t waver. “He’s gotten to know more athletes from all over Canada and gotten to know coaches,” said MaryAnn. “Now for him to be selected to go to worlds … it’s helping him grow as a person and helping him become more self-sufficient.” Des Brisay has excelled at long-distance running and the evidence hangs on a wall in his

bedroom, which is crowded with medals, trophies and ribbons. Among his long list of running accomplishments are a first-place win at the Canada Army Run half-marathon last year where he finished ahead of 8,500 participants with a time of 1:12:25; a silver finish in the 5,000 m at his first international race, held in Italy in 2016; and three years running he’s been named Road Racer of the Year at the Ottawa Sports Award banquet. Des Brisay began running competitively at age 14 with his father, Peter, a past member of the national cross-country ski team and former runner. “Tommy’s dad was always going out for a run and Tommy really liked being active,” said MaryAnn. “The idea was that maybe he would like the routine and maybe it would give him a new outlet for some of his energy.” Des Brisay took to the sport. He began competing in high school track, and then cross-country and road races. He does interval training with his dad in the basement and is a member of the Ottawa Lions Track and Field Club, where he trains three times a week, “Monday, Wednesday and Saturday,” he said. “It’s been such a transformation for him; it’s given him so many opportunities for socializing and being part of this community,” said MaryAnn. “When you get a diagnosis like autism, it’s kind of like people saying that your child has all these limits, all these disabilities – and he is very disabled, he’s still very autistic, he needs a lot of support – but when he gets on that track and he runs, he’s independent.” Around the same time he began competitive running, he also launched a YouTube channel. He enjoyed watching other people’s videos and wanted to make his own. “He told me to put him on YouTube, it wasn’t my idea,” said MaryAnn, adding she figured they would post a couple of videos “very discreetly” because she was concerned about online safety. “I didn’t foresee (this),” she said, laughing. The channel now has more than 21,500 subscribers. It features videos of him at races and while training, as well as trips to Disney, playing guitar and family celebrations.

Des Brisay, who was next in line to race at the 2016 Rio Paralympics, is a Paralympic hopeful for Tokyo 2020. His goal, he said, is to represent Canada and compete at the Paralympics. “I like being active,” he said. “I’m going to be the first strongest runner in the world.”

The family has received messages from people around the world, some who were inspired by Des Brisay to take up running, while others have written that the videos helped them when they were depressed. “That means a lot when you really think about how autism is a thing where you supposedly can’t communicate, but Tommy has communicated a really strong message to a lot of people,” said MaryAnn. “He’s touched a lot of lives.” Des Brisay leaves for training in Switzerland on July 7 before flying to London on July 12. Social isolation of seniors is a real concern A BRYNNA few years ago, a friend of ours was contemplating a move out of the home she’d lived in for more than 35 years. It was a lot to care for the place. Her children, in their 60s and on the verge of retirement themselves, urged her to look into a seniors’ home. “I can’t move into a seniors’ home,” she said. “I’m too young to hang out with that crowd.” She was 88 at the time. Despite having suffered some hearing and vision loss due to age, she was in good overall health. Every day she would walk for fitness. Having lost her driver’s licence due to her eyesight degeneration, she walked to appointments, the grocery store and to visit friends, most of whom were in care homes. She had regular appointments at the National Arts Centre and various galas as well, among the reasons she eventually moved into a condo closer to downtown. She often commented on how well she slept, which struck me as odd. It’s a proven fact that, as people age, their sleep deteriorates, and yet here was an octogenarian frequently saying that she felt fresh after a good night’s sleep. New research out of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania may help explain the connection between my friend’s good sleep and her active social life. Researchers there studied the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster

ers note that, “the number one emerging issue facing seniors in Canada is keeping older people socially connected and active.” Although social isolation is different from loneliness, the authors report that a lack of social interactions can contribute to depression and greater feelings of loneliness among seniors, even when they’re in the company of others. It’s estimated that one quarter of Canadian seniors live with depression. can harm cells,” writes Science Social isolation also puts Daily. “Long-term, harmful ac- seniors at risk of negative health tivation of the UPR is suspected behaviours including drinking, as a contributor to the aging smoking, being sedentary and process and to specific age-relat- not eating well. appear to diminish feelings of isolation. More than 40 per cent of seniors living in residential care homes exhibit symptoms of depression on a regular basis, nearly one-third more than the average. I know from experience that, with a busy family life, managing our own work and social schedules can be trying. The seniors amongst us are often easily forgotten. With Canada’s over-65 population now outnumbering children for the first time since Confederation, however, we all have a responsibility to ensure the elders in our lives are respected as valuable contributors to our society.

that seniors who are socially isolated “have a higher likelihood of falls; and, have a four-to-five times greater risk of hospitalization,” than those who are more socially active. “Research also indicates that social isolation is a predictor of mortality from coronary heart disease and stroke.” There are a number of things that contribute to seniors’ isolation. In rural areas, a lack of public transport and poor Internet connections leave many older people unable to connect with their communities. And while we often think the answer is installing seniors into care homes, this doesn’t

Graduates have what it takes

L

ast week was high school graduation time. Mortarboards and gowns, that traditional graduation garb, set the fashion trend for the week as Grade 12 graduates at every high school strode and received a secondary school diploma from a principal, vicepresident or teacher, with beaming smiles all around. These smiles were not only on the stage, but throughout the audience, on the faces of proud teachers, parents, family members and friends of the graduates. These secondary school graduation diplomas represent more than just the successful completion of 14 years of schooling, starting with junior kindergarten and continuing through to Grade 12. Quite simply, these diplomas represent the future. You only had to be at one of these high school graduation ceremonies to appreciate not only the accomplishments of these graduates to date, but also the unprecedented opportunities which await them in the coming years. Whether they are off to university, college or the world of work, these graduates have before them endless possibilities for further personal growth and additional learning. Whether it is in nursing, law, social work, interior decorating, software development, animation, marketing, engineering, construction or any other field of endeavour, these young graduates have been armed with all of the tools necessary to succeed in their chosen pathway.

But more than this, this generation of graduates has developed a sense of social justice and community volunteering that will ensure a future that is not only more compassionate, but more participatory. That’s because the high school education of today goes beyond just the “three R’s” and the curriculum. In high school, youth get to know about taking responsibility for this world of ours, for preserving it and for making it a better place to live, work and play. They get to know how to do this in part thanks to the clubs and extracurricular activities in which they participate in their high school years. But they also know how to do this because, besides their learning, they have developed what it takes to succeed in today’s world — skills like collaboration, digital fluency, critical thinking, resiliency, perseverance and empathy. They are globally aware. They respect and accept others for who they are. This all gives so much hope, not only for where society is headed in the future, but also for seeing how our goals and aspirations as a country of communities are going to be realized. It will all happen because of these young people who this past week strode across a stage to receive a secondary school diploma. They have what it takes to take us to the next level as a country and as a society. We can’t wait for it to happen.

There’s something to be said for team sports

o, the kids are out of school — at loose ends — complaining about being bored, while you try to figure out how to keep them away from screens. It’s an age-old dilemma, although there are a lot more screens than there used to be. Myself, I’d get them into team sports. Yes, they went out of fashion some time ago, when lots of people decided that competition was an ugly thing — and indeed it can be, when carried to extremes. That goes for life, not to mention politics, as well as baseball. One of our great national heroes, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, was not a team sports guy. Dubbed a “single-combat warrior” by the great Canadian journalist Richard Gwyn, Trudeau preferred judo and canoeing to baseball, although he was knowl-

innings contests, the 50-50 draw. A new one on me is the Poutine Batter promotion, in which one opposition player is designated the Poutine Batter, and every time he comes to bat, the crowd has a chance at free poutine if he strikes out. Although this has the virtue of being a uniquely Canadian event, it seems a bit petty of us to be wishing ill on a player just because we’re hungry. One day I was there, the Poutine Batter was a member of the Cuban National Team called Juan Torriente. He disappointed the fans five times, although he got to two strikes twice, causing brief excitement. By contrast, on the smallest scale of baseball — the Little League diamonds — I didn’t hear anybody cheering for opposing players to strike out. I also didn’t hear any parents or coaches yelling at the 10-year-

old players or 14-year-old umpires. I just saw kids, boys and girls, bonding, encouraging the other players on their team and saying “good try” even when they failed. That’s how team sport is supposed to work. I’m glad it still does.

Watching out for the vulnerable OC Transpo drivers honoured

who went above and beyond to keep people and transit users safe. The men honoured took action in a variety of situations, including returning lost children or seniors with memory disorders back to their homes.

BY BRIER DODGE

LOADED PURSE

brier.dodge@metroland.com

If it wasn’t for a Para Transpo driver who performed CPR, a woman probably would have died. Orléans’ Jean-Marc Pilon was one of 16 OC Transpo drivers honoured at the Shenkman Arts Centre on June 20 for their actions in 2016. On Dec. 12, 2016, Pilon was dealing with one of his OC Transpo clients when the escort of a different woman on board the Para Transpo bus came to tell him the woman couldn’t breathe. “I rushed back in, I looked at my passenger, and I noticed she was not breathing any more, so I went to the radio, told them to send (paramedics) and started CPR,” Pilon said. Pilon had gone through the mandatory first aid and CPR training, but he’d never performed CPR before. “You don’t think of what you need to do next, you just go and do it,” he said. “I went along, and did what I had to do, and it worked out for the best.” Medical staff said if he hadn’t done anything in the seven to eight minutes it took them to respond, the woman would have died. Pilon was joined by 15 other recipients

Stephen Malcolm, a bus driver from Bay Ward, put in a different type of call – he found a purse on board that had $10,000 in it. He returned the purse, and all the cash. Another group of drivers performed CPR on an operator in distress at the OC Transpo building on St. Laurent Boulevard, performing chest compressions until a defibrillator could be used – actions a doctor at the hospital said saved their coworker’s life.

Cumberland Ward driver Kert Berneche stopped robbery suspects by recognizing they were aboard his bus when he heard descriptions broadcast. He pulled the bus over, telling passengers he was ahead of schedule, until officers arrived. Another driver, south Ottawa resident Mozafar Mostafavi, rescued a woman on his bus who had attempted to die by suicide. Another stopped to get an autistic boy, who was running in busy traffic on Scott Street, to safety. Barrhaven’s Frank Boushey took home top honours for being the stand-out in 2016. “I didn’t expect this,” he said. “It was quite the shocker getting this. I’m proud.”

Young passenger was assisted by driver, at South Keys Continued from page 11

Boushey was driving his regular 97 route early in the morning on Nov. 20 when he stopped at South Keys and saw a young girl wearing just shorts and a tank top, carrying bags. He said she approached the bus, but then turned around,

so he and went to see if she was OK. She told him she was pregnant, and had just been thrown out of the house by her boyfriend. “She was carrying, four, five bags with her. She was a young girl in shorts and a tank top in the winter, it was cold out,” he said.

He was able to get transit operators to meet him along the route and pick up the young woman, who was escorted to a safe place. “It was like -15. She said, ‘I was afraid to approach your bus, I had no money, I didn’t want you to say no to me.’ “I said, ‘Sometimes you just need to ask.’”

Women have made major gains in the past 30 years but they still face barriers in business that their male counterparts don’t experience, says CEO Nora Spinks. Spinks is chief executive officer of the Vanier Institute of the Family, a national charitable organization dedicated to understanding the reality of family life in Canada. She and five other female leaders spoke on a panel about women in leadership at the inaugural Women, Wine and Wisdom event, hosted by the West Ottawa Board of Trade on June 28 at Next restaurant in Stittsville. More than 100 women attended. “We really wanted to have an evening of substance,” said Sueling Ching, executive director of the board of trade. “We wanted not only to network but to learn from

each other and create an environment that would inspire each other.” ENERGY AND WISDOM

Spinks, an Almonte resident, started her first business in 1986. “When I started my business and went into the bank and asked for some seed funding, the bank manager thanked me very much for my ideas but (said) he’d be willing to give me a $500 credit card – if I could get my father to sign the application,” said Spinks. “I look at men who started businesses in the same industry as me back in the late ’80s and they were being given $150,000, $250,000 with no collateral, no anything, and I was given a $500 credit card if my father signed. So I thanked them very much and politely left.” Although huge strides have been made since then, women

still face conscious and unconscious biases when they assume leadership positions, she said. “We know that there are a variety of additional challenges for women, whether it’s accessing capital or whether it’s finding the right people or balancing your personal and family commitments with your job,” said Spinks. “And so what's interesting when a group of women like this all come together is that there’s energy you can feel, there’s wisdom and experience in pockets you never expect, there’s a camaraderie that doesn’t happen anywhere else.” That camaraderie is incredibly important, she said. Having that circle of support offers leaders a place where they can bounce ideas off others and receive important feedback. See WORK, page 14

Kanata Kourier-Standard - Thursday, July 6, 2017 13

It was a great pleasure for me to join the Kanata Muslim Community at the Richcraft Centre to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan. I then joined the larger Ottawa Community at the EY Centre for morning prayers, along with my fellow Ottawa political colleagues. To everyone in our community, I wish everyone a Happy Eid Mubarak!

InBay Technologies I was proud to be on-hand as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Services and Procurement, Steven MacKinnon, announced the Government of Canada will be investing in Kanata company InBay Technologies through the Build in Canada Innovation Program. The made-in-Canada innovation called idQ Trust as a Service enhances security and helps to relieve today’s password burden. This is another example of the outstanding talent we have right here in Kanata!

Canada Company I had the privilege of speaking at the 10th annual Canada Company Scholarship Presentation Ceremony. Canada Company is a charitable, non-partisan organization that serves to build bridges between business, community leaders and the Canadian Military. Transitioning from military to civilian life can be difficult, but assistance through scholarships is a way to mitigate its challenges.

Citizenship Ceremony I was honoured to attend a citizenship ceremony hosted by the Ottawa Senators, to welcome 150 new Canadian citizens to Canada. Along with Ottawa Senators President and CEO Tom Anselmi, it was a great pleasure to welcome hockey legend Ken Dryden to Kanata, who presided over the ceremony. It was wonderful to chat with such an enthusiastic group of people, who were so grateful to become Canadians.

Around the Community More excellent events across the riding, I started the day with a visit to the Bridlewood Community Association Family Fun Day and BBQ. From there I went to see the final installation of the Canada 150 artwork entitled “Wisdom of the Trees”, created by Margit Hideg with workshop participants from local community groups and high tech companies. Thanks to those who work so hard to enhance our great communities!

Visiting US Delegation Over the weekend I had the opportunity to give US Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Mrs. Sessions a tour of the War Museum and Parliament Hill. At the War Museum we were joined by distinguished historian Tim Cook and Director General Stephen Quick. They did an excellent job showcasing the many exhibits that highlight the sacrifices that the Canadian Armed Forces have made throughout our history. During the Parliament tour we showed the Attorney General and Mrs. Sessions both chambers of Parliament and the memorial chamber; they were both very engaged throughout the tour and very interested to learn more about our country.

Working for and Representing Kanata-Carleton It is such an honour and privilege to serve as your Member of Parliament and I look forward to meeting and working with you all. OWN HER SUCCESS

Jessica Cunha/Metroland

When it comes to success, it’s important for women to own it, said Clare Beckton, founding executive director of Carleton University’s Centre for Women in Politics and Public Leadership. A published author and former deputy head of Status of Women Canada, Beckton is no stranger to owning successes. “When I was asked to come to the government to do the equality review, I was a law professor and I had a big grant to go to

More than 100 women attended the inaugural Women, Wine and Wisdom event on June 28. She had never worked in government before, didn’t know the public sector lingo and it required a move to Ottawa. “To be at the foundation of deciding what Section 15 might look like – I’ve got to do this,” said the Nepean resident. That “go for it” attitude has

helped Beckton own her success and pushed her to try new things. “(Women) tend to hold themselves back and say, ‘I don’t have all the qualifications,’ even when they do. Or they say, ‘Oh, that other person is better qualified’ or ‘I can’t do this because I have a family,’” Beckton said. “Women (need) to own

their success – no one else is going to do it for you. You have to own it and be brave, essentially, to do things even though you’re afraid. “They have to look at, what am I going to gain, and if I do nothing, what am I going to lose.” PRIORIRIZE YOURSELF

When Kanata’s Reham Sannoufi gave birth to her third child, she was back at university studying for her MBA two days later. At the same time, her husband was opening La Vie Executive Health Centre, which promotes proactive health care and early detection of medical issues. Her children needed her care, her husband needed her assistance and she needed to complete her classes. “By nature women tend to put others first, but the problem is, if we don’t take care of ourselves, our health as women, how can we truly accomplish all these other responsibilities or achieve our goals?” Sannoufi asked the attendees. When women fail to prioritize themselves, they risk illness, burnout and depression, she said. “Take care of yourself, put yourself as the priority,” said Sannoufi. “If something happens to you, you're not going to be able to manage your family, your children, your business, or anything else.” Her advice to others who find themselves in similar situations is to stop and rearrange priorities. “We are all professionals, career-oriented mothers, partners, family members,” she said. “It’s about finding the right balance between family and business.”

$3.4 million required to fix flood-damaged paths MELISSA MURRAY mmurray@metroland.com

The flood waters have receded, but the damage is already done. Fixing pathways damaged from the flood this spring will cost the National Capital Commission $3.4 million. During the commission’s board meeting on June 29, Marc Corriveau, director, urban lands and transportation, and Gary Lacey, executive director, capital stewardship, gave members an update on the flood that affected 12 capital commission areas in early May. About 20 kilometres of paths were under as much as four to five feet of water. So far, about 17 kilometres have been reopened. Three pathways will remain closed into 2018. That includes a one-kilometre section of the Ottawa River Pathway, behind Par-

liament Hill, between Portage Bridge and the Rideau Canal Locks, the Lac des Fees Pathway, near the soccer field in Gatineau Park. “This spring, we not only had record water levels, but record velocity and when you combine (them), it makes a heavy impact on the shores and the waterways of any region,” Lacey said. Photos of the pathways from when the water finally receded show eroded shorelines, downed limbs and sinkholes. Before water even peaked, National Capital Commission staff and contractors went out to minimize damage. They went to the aboriginal centre on Victoria Island to help secure some of their assets and worked to armour the banks at the navy monument, at Richmond Landing beside the Ottawa River. “It has been a very try-

ing time as soon as the water levels started to recede we immediately began the site cleanup,” Lacey said. SERVING KANATA NORTH

City Councillor, Kanata North

KANATA NORTH PICNIC IS WEDNESDAY JULY 19th at Sandwell Green Park, 4-8 pm – the park is on the Parkway across from the Earl of March High School. Final preparations are being made for this annual free family event where thousands enjoy summer. We have some new activities this year as well as returning groups and entertainers. Thanks to those who have volunteered as I cannot put on this event without them and we need a few more so please email Kanatanorth@ottawa.ca if you can help out. HYDRO CORRIDORS – Hydro One plans to remove all vegetation and encroachments in the Morgan’s Grant Community starting on July 17th. They have also marked trees on easements in the backyard or adjacent to homes in Beaverbrook and Village Green – for work to happen in 2018. Hydro Ottawa, however, is working with me to save as much vegetation as possible on their easement. I have City staff helping and Gary Sealey finding residents to work with me on ways to get Hydro One to work with the community to make the corridors attractive places. We will be holding a public meeting in the fall. More information is available on my website. WOW what a Party! Despite such a wet week it was wonderful to see everyone out celebrating Canada’s 150! Congratulations to all the Canada Day racers and to the volunteers who put on this event each year. It was great to meet many of you and your families and provide Ottawa 150 flags and tattoos. I would like to thank you for dropping by my booth at Kanata Canada Day festivities. We are not finished celebrating, so please go to www.Ottawa2017.ca to see events that are happening throughout the year. MOSQUITOES – It’s been such a wet year that we have mosquitoes, despite having 4 treatments done to date. I met with GDG and the city staff to discuss the increase and how to deal with it. Floodplain areas, puddles on trails or your property, anywhere with water or waterlogged ground are places where larvae can be dormant for up to 15 years and this year they are emerging. To combat this GDG are testing daily and continuing treatments. They have also put out traps for adult mosquitoes to ensure they don’t produce another crop and investigating other potential areas. Some individual properties have wet areas (many larvae are being found there) so please help by checking your property for standing water including ponds, puddles, bird baths etc. These should be cleaned out on a regular basis to prevent the larvae from hatching. If you are still having problems in your area please call GDG directly at 1-877-227-0552 or email at info.mosquito@gdg.ca where your concern will be addressed within 48 hours. GDG will be at the Kanata North Picnic to answer questions and explain what has been happening. UNVEILING OF THE KANATA MONUMENT – JULY 12 @ 4PM Corner of Canadian Shield and Maritime Way – The former City of Kanata created a ‘K’ sculpture to recognize their employees at the time of amalgamation in 2001. Unfortunately it was vandalized and had to be repaired. A permanent location has now been created and it is ready to be unveiled on July 12th. All are invited, particularly the former staff whose names are on the sculpture. Please pass the word to any former staff that you know. PUBLIC MEETING SESSION WITH REGARDS TO PROPERTY STANDARD WITHIN IN THE CITY OF OTTAWA – at McNabb Recreation Centre,180 Percy St., Monday July 10 from 6:30 to 8 pm where you are invited to provide feedback on possible amendments.

to reinvest in those higher standards. For example, a portion of the trail behind Parliament Hill that was reinvigorated remained in tact post flooding. Older sections didn’t fare as well. Some of the reopened pathways received temporary repairs to get them open and the

commission has received some of the geotechnical studies required to move forward with the more permanent repairs. “The damage to our sites … will be a challenge for us going forward, but it’s nothing compared to the people affected with their homes,” said Mark Kristmanson, chief executive officer of the National Capital Commission, during the meeting.

Ottawa Capital Pride wants plain clothes officers only Police officers have been asked to leave their uniforms at home if they plan to walk in Ottawa Capital Pride this year. Ottawa Capital Pride released a statement on June 30 saying at the request of their LGBTQ2 youth, uniformed police officers would not be welcome to attend Capital Pride activities offduty. Other community members have asked for the event to remain inclusive — which includes police. That being said, the organization has asked that police who do participate, do so in plain clothes. “As an organization, Capital Pride supports the participation of individual

LGBTQ2 police officers and their allies in this year’s festival,” the statement read. “ … However, it is of prime importance to us that everyone feels safe at Pride, particularly LGBTQ2 youth, and racialized and Indigenous community members. “Accordingly, we respectfully request that participating officers reserve their uniforms and vehicles for official work duties only this year.” However, Ottawa Police chief Charles Bordeleau said officers who choose to participate in the parade can also choose whether or not to wear their uniform. The Ottawa Police already have made a decision to not have a float in the parade. “Like our past many years of participation in the parade, officers will also have

the choice as to whether they wear their uniform or regular clothes,” Bordeleau said in a statement released on June 30. “We are proud of our uniform, and it is part of our identity — it's who we are and how we serve the community.” According to Capital Pride, this decision was made based on the feedback the organization received from consultations held with stakeholders and LGBTQ2 community members this year. “During our consultation process and in ongoing conversations with stakeholders, we have been particularly mindful of events in the last year concerning police participation in Prides across the country,” the Capital Pride statement read. “On the issue of police participa-

tion in the Capital Pride festival, community members have been passionate in their views.” In 2016, the Ottawa Police liaison committee celebrated its 25 year anniversary. “We are very proud of this, partnership work with the LGBTQ communities,” Bordeleau’s statement said. “We are committed to continuing this important work with long standing community-police partners like the liaison committee.” Both organizations say they wish to continue to work at strengthening their relationship. Pride week in the capital begins on Aug. 21. As with past years, the Ottawa Police will co-host a barbecue for launch Pride on Aug. 21. Capital Pride’s parade will take place on Aug. 27.

Grannies give students homework

& Inform Your Community

SHIRLEY MANDER

Members of the Grassroot Grannies gave students at Bayview Public School a little extra homework as they prepared for summer holidays. The focus of the grannies’ presentation at Bayview was on helping others and keeping fit. The Kanata-based grannies group raises awareness and funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign to help African grandmothers caring for their orphaned grandchildren. Students were able to see that their counterparts in Africa lived lives with significantly fewer resources and opportunities. This was where the helping others part was highlighted. The keeping fit part of the presentation referred to the grannies’ Ride to Turn the Tide event, a three-day, 260-kilometre fundraising bicycle ride that will take place Sept. 6-8. The focus of the ride is to raise funds and awareness for African grandmothers and the children in their care whose lives

As each of the 26 participants in the ride pays for their own expenses, all funds raised go directly to the Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign. Last year, the group raised more than $65,000. As Bayview students head out on summer vacation, they

take along with them the challenge of remembering to help others and to have fun while keeping fit. In the meantime, the grandmothers will be out training and looking forward to a warm welcome from the students when cyclists make a stop at their school on Sept. 8. Dragon boat races at Constance Bay on July 15 Teams, individuals can register now BY JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

The third annual Constance Bay Dragon Boat Festival is coming up on Saturday, July 15, running from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Point Beach. This festival is presented by the Ottawa River Canoe Club (ORCC) in partnership with the Constance and Buckham’s Bay Community Associa-

tion. Everyone is urged to plan to attend for a fun day at the beach while also experiencing the enjoyment of recreational dragon boat racing. In dragon boat racing, each team consists of one steersperson (provided by the ORCC), 20 paddlers and one drummer. Because this is a just-forfun event, each team will receive a training session and will participate in two qualifying heats, with the fastest teams competing in the A, B and C finals to win the Women’s Cup, the Community Cup and the Overall Championship. The dragon boat festival will have

a supervised place for kids to play during the races. There will also be a paddle zone, a beer tent with a view of all the action and Constance Bay’s glorious beach. There will be parking at the Constance and Buckham’s Bay Commu-

nity Centre with a hay wagon shuttle to the beach area. Teams of 21 can be registered or you can register individually to participate. Practice runs start at 9:30 a.m., with the event ending at 6 p.m. The final practice and race sched-

ule will be published on the Constance and Buckham’s Bay Community Association website, www.cbbca.ca, where you can also register to participate. Individual registration is $20 while team registration is $300.

perform Thursday, Nov. 23 at the arena at TD Place, followed by Sloan, Reuben and the Dark, and Dwayne Gretzky the following day. The day before the big game will have the most activities by far. Headlining the concert series are Canadian rock bands Trooper and April Wine along with over a dozen other events throughout the day. The Nissan Titan Street Festival and family fun zone will have activities for those of all ages, and the Canadian Football Hall of Fame will be on site with memorabilia from the last 105 years of Canadian football history. Because all CFL teams will be represented at the event and not just the Redblacks, groups from all over the league will hold events on Saturday. The Calgary Grey Cup Committee and the Spirit of Edmonton will be holding breakfasts for fans. Riderville and the Montreal Huddle will also be there for fans of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Montreal Alouettes respectively. Also on hand at the festivities at the Shaw Centre will be the Gridiron Gals, a clinic held by coaches and players from the CFL for ladies who want to take part in some of the drills and strategy of football.

Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi, clad in his own Redblacks jersey, was on hand to show his and the government of Ontario’s support. “I’m really excited we’re hosting the Grey Cup Festival,” said Naqvi. “I think it’s going to be a great part of an amazing year in our city where all the celebrations are taking place and it’s an amazing opportunity for us to celebrate Canadian Football, to celebrate our team, and, of course, celebrate Canada’s 150th. I’m also very excited that the government of Ontario is a big partner in this Grey Cup Festival.” “This will be, I believe, only the seventh time the Grey Cup has been held in Ottawa,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “We’re not just going to have an amazing game, we’re going to have an amazing week of Grey Cup activities. Lansdowne has turned out to be a great success. We’re really proud to be hosting.” In a report released June 28, OSEG reported a financial loss for 2016 despite a 41 per cent increase of attendance at Lansdowne over the previous year. Those losses are primarily linked to interest rates on loans for the construction of Lansdowne, so it is expected to be a temporary issue as they pay down the principal on those loans. The boost of cash from the Grey Cup event could potentially alleviate some of those losses.

The memories matter most

You spent your entire life on what matters most. Every moment etched in your heart like a collage. You got up in the middle of the night for 2 am bottles and diaper changes; you put the Band-Aids on every scuffed knee, you washed every grass stained, muddied piece of clothing after every game. You helped at the dinner table with every math problem, even the ones you did get yourself. You hugged them at their first heartbreak. You were filled with pride at graduation.

You hurt as they moved away from home and then beamed as you walked them down the aisle. You were moved when you held your first grandchild for the first time. You are proud of the people they have become, still there for every moment, every single memory. You did everything right. Let them celebrate these memories because you planned ahead. The new Geography and Exploration Pavilion offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in Ottawa’s geography. One of ten pavilions open in the capital, the Geography and Exploration Pavilion opened on June 28.

Geography and Exploration Pavilion officially opens Visitors to Ottawa and Ottawans alike will have a unique opportunity to engage with the National Capital Commission this summer. The Royal Canadian Geographical Society partnered with the NCC last year to repurpose the space at 50 Sussex Dr. into the Geography and Exploration Pavilion. The organizations officially opened the pavilion on June 28. From June 29 to Sept. 30, the Geographical Society will host two exhibits. The main floor will feature

The Plan for Canada’s Capital, 2017 — 2067: A Place for Canadians exhibit. This exhibit includes interactive opportunities to familiarize visitors with the NCC and explain its role in the capital. The exhibit will showcase the NCC’s planning, conservation, and development of the National Capital Region, and will focus on the NCC’s plan for federal lands in the region over the course of the next 50 years. “The National Capital Commission is proud to partner with The Royal Canadian Geographical Society to revive 50 Sussex Dr. as the Geography and Exploration Pavilion dur-

ing Canada’s sesquicentennial,” said Mark Kristmanson, chief executive officer of the NCC. All visitors will have a chance to provide feedback on the 50year plan. The second floor of the pavilion will display the work of Alex Janvier, Thirteen Moons. The work is on loan to the society. “The works of Alex Janvier and the exhibit on the Plan for Canada’s Capital will provide visitors with a unique experience in the picturesque heart of the nation’s capital,” Kristmanson said. Residents get answers about new Civic campus BY MELISSA MURRAY mmurray@metroland.com

The new Civic campus will include towers. At a community consultation on June 20, Ottawa Hospital executive vice-president and chief operating officer Cameron Love told a crowd of about 30 a bit about what it might look like at the Sir John Carling site that’s part of the Central Experimental Farm. David Darwin, who lives in Carlington, where the meeting was held, questioned why the hospital would consider building out instead of up. With new developments with towers planned close to the site, Darwin said it would “complement the area” while also preserving some of the green space on the site.

“There’s no question,” Love said in response. “There will be towers.” How high they go, he said mentioning a hypothetical 10 to 14 storeys, will depend on how many beds the new campus needs and the services that are chosen for the new campus. Right now, as part of Phase 1 of the planning for the new facility, what needs to be decided is which programs and services will be offered in the building. In order to do that, the hospital is looking at each of its campuses — Civic, Riverside and General — to see what makes the most sense and putting it there. For example, Love said, it makes sense for the General to take more of the cancer services and care. When Phil Bartlett took a

look at the site breakdown for the health care centre, he noticed there was about as much land dedicated to parking — 15 to 20 acres (six to eight hectares) for an estimated 3,400 spaces — as for the buildings, of about 25 acres (10 hectares). “For me, this would be more well received if parking plans were condensed,” he said. Parking will be a big issue for the community as the project moves forward, said River Coun. Riley Brockington after the meeting. “I think that will be a major issue — how will the Civic accommodate their parking needs and the needs of the whole community,” he said. With the hospital taking over land that is now a parking lot that’s used when there are events at Dow’s Lake, the parking strategy will have to look at

how to accommodate visitors to the nearby area as well. The hospital is still working with Public Services and Procurement Canada on the details of the 99-year lease. Love said he hopes to have the lease signed by Christmas of this year. “If the whole process is 1,000 steps, we are in the first five to 10,” Love said during a quick presentation. Love addressed questions about integration with the community, the plans for the Heart Institute, consultations and what happens to the current building. Love said the Heart Institute must be integrated into the new hospital in the future and a transition plan needs to

be sorted out, but in terms of what’s next for the current hospital, it’s not top of mind. “I’ve not thought anything about it,” Love said, adding there have been a lot of suggestions, pointing to the need for more long-term care or acute care for the elderly. In the fall, the hospital will receive a report from an external group detailing an engagement framework. It will advise the hospital on the best way to engage the public, and the hospital plans to use it to plan its engagement strategy. The province requires a certain minimum level of consultation. The hospital is a large urban community development project, Love said. As a result, neighbourhood associations, hospital staff,

health care providers, patients and families will need to be part of the development of the new facility. Patients and families will help shape what Love described as a significant part of the new hospital. The plan includes about seven acres (about three hectares) of wellness space. While no concrete plans have been made, as the design of the hospital won’t be unveiled until Stage 3 of planning. Getting answers to some of the big questions around the hospital’s relocation was helpful for residents, Brockington said, adding he plans to host this kind of meeting annually. “We’ll be back. We’ll be back a lot. The community has great questions and great ideas,” Love said.

Entertainment came by way of goat

E

velyn wasn’t the most popular girl at the Northcote School. She wasn’t unpopular, either. She was just there, minding her own business, doing exactly what Miss Crosby asked of her, and always had her homework done, and her desk drawer in perfect order. Evelyn wasn’t much of a talker, either. So, although we knew her family as neighbours, I knew little about what Evelyn did at home. Did she play with dolls? Did she have a pet cat, or a pet chicken like I did? I knew she worked hard at the farm, an only child with no brothers to help with chores. But, what Evelyn did at home for fun, I didn’t know — until the day I was invited to her farm on a warm Saturday to play. I was thrilled beyond words. Finally, I would find out what my schoolmate did when she wasn’t at school.

MARY COOK Memories

was right up there with a trip to the movies on a Saturday night. Imagine, eating your lunch in your very own little playhouse. Then, Evelyn looked up at the summer kitchen roof, and in a voice that sounded as mad as a hatter’s, yelled at the top of her lungs, “Buster, you get off that roof this minute.” There, on the very top of the summer kitchen, was a goat — almost the size of a pony. It just glared down at Evelyn, stomped its front foot, and looked like it defied anyone brave enough to challenge it. LONG LANE How it got on the roof was beyond me. “You heard me, Buster. Get off the roof.” Like our farm, there was a long lane She grabbed a branch on the ground, which off the Northcote Side Road, and Father took me over in the buggy and dropped me looked to me like it was always at hand to deal with the goat, which seemed to have off at the gate leading into the barnyard. a mind of its own. She swung the branch Mother sent some sticky buns, as was the custom then. When one visited for the first over her head in the air. “He’s already torn time, a jar of jam or some other little treat the shingles off one side of the house, and my father said if I couldn’t control him, went with you. he was going to sell him to the butcher in Evelyn was waiting for me at the gate, Renfrew.” and she led me right to the kitchen to say Well, Buster either knew of the threat hello to her mother and hand over the over his head or he didn’t trust Evelyn with sticky buns. When we went outside, I was the branch. He made one leap and landed impressed to see that Evelyn had a playhouse, filled with a make-believe stove and on all fours in front of us. Then, he turned his back on Evelyn, made a snort and real little table and chairs. kicked her with his back feet, sending her This little playhouse was right outside sprawling — and then the chase was on. the summer kitchen, and Evelyn said she often had her lunch out there, which to me The two of them tore around the barnyard

SAFETY TIPS

Smoke Alarms: Test your smoke alarms. If a fire starts in your home while you are asleep, you want to know about it immediately. Some homes are equipped with electrically connected smoke alarms that may not work when the power is out. Make sure your home has a batteryoperated smoke alarm on every level.

like two maniacs in a race for survival. Every time Evelyn got near Buster, he raised his hind legs and defied her to come any closer. It was obvious this wasn’t the first time Buster and Evelyn met horns. Finally, Buster ran toward a back field, and Evelyn very carefully put the branch right back where it was when the fight began, ready for the next challenge with the goat. NO IDEA

I asked Evelyn how Buster got onto the roof. She said she had no idea, and neither did anyone else. No one knew how he managed the leap, and she lost count of the times the goat did it. She thought he took a running leap when no one was around, and her father said the goat was too smart for its own good, and if one more shingle was ever seen on the ground, Buster would be taking the trip into Renfrew in the truck. During my short visit, I heard that Evelyn’s pet cat never left the barn since one day Buster kicked it about 10 feet into the air. I asked her if she considered Buster a pet. We were eating cookies in her playhouse. “I did when he was little. But, not anymore. And if he gives me one more kick like that last one, I’ll help Pop load him into the truck myself.” Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Jack MacLaren Member of Provincial Parliament Carleton-Mississippi Mills

Canada 150 We will soon celebrate the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the Dominion of Canada as a constitutional monarchy. Monarchy in Canada goes back even further to the founding of New France, more than 400 years ago. But our constitution is even older than that. All our rights and freedoms, as well as our duties and responsibilities, reach back 800 years to the signing of Magna Carta in 1215 – which is the foundation of every successful democracy in the Western world. We can be proud of the ancient rights and responsibilities of citizenship, together with the history, symbols, and institutions that give us our identity. But we must remember that freedom isn’t free. We must remember those who have fought for Canada both at home and abroad – whether in heated debates in Parliament or on the battle fields of Afghanistan, Juno Beach, or Vimy Ridge. So today let’s cherish our values and traditions while honouring our freedoms and responsibilities, and let’s keep building a better, stronger Canada!

Ride for Autism revs up to thrill BY BRIAN DRYDEN brian.dryden@metroland.com

A nine-year-old girl will get her motor running and head out on the open road when the fifth annual Motorcycle Ride for Autism rumbles out from the parking lot at the Brown’s Your Independent Grocer in Stittsville on July 8. This year a father, who asked that his daughter’s last name not be published, will bring his daughter, Anika, on the ride with him for the first time. Anika is on the autism spectrum. “She’s quite excited that her father will be taking her. It is quite an event for her. This is her first time going on the ride, and it’s quite a long route. She’ll be going for four hours or more,” said Suzanne Jacobson, who is the founder of the Kanata-based QuickStart Autism. Last year the Motorcycle Ride for Autism, Ottawa raised $16,000 and this year the goal is to bring in $20,000. This is the second year in a row that the event, which started in Kanata, has been staged at Brown’s Your Independent Grocer in Stittsville. The reason for the shift to Stittsville for the past two years is that the event has grown over the years and organizers needed a larger venue to accomodate all the motorcyle riders that now take part in the event. Speakers at the event begin at 8:40 a.m. and the kickoff is at 9 a.m. with Mayor Jim Watson. The speakers this year are Brandon, a nineSubmitted year-old boy on the autism spectrum, and CharNine-year-old Anika, who is on the autism lotte, a 10-year-old girl on the autism spectrum. “Brandon and Charlotte are ambassadors for spectrum, will ride with her father during autism, and speakers who help raise awareness,” the Ride for Autism.

Jacobson said. Along with the ride, there will be plenty of activities during the day at Brown’s, 1251 Stittsville Main St., during the day of the event. There will be a community barbecue, which starts at around 11:30 a.m. There will also by music that starts at about the same time of the barbecue and an auction to raise money. The motorcycle riders are expected to start returning to the Stitts-

ville starting point at about 1 p.m. The Motorcycle Ride for Autism was started in 2013 by Dave Kuhnle, the grandfather of two girls with autism spectrum disorder. The funds raised benefit the charity QuickStart - Early Intervention for Autism. To date the ride has raised $60,000. This past May alone, nine children applied for the charity’s KickStart Program that it funds at a level of $4,000 per child. QuickStart’s mission is to see that all children have equal opportunity to develop to their full potential through early intervention. All QuickStart programs are offered at no cost. For more information, call 613-791-3757.

NOTICE OF PESTICIDE USE Between April 15 and September 15, 2017, G.D.G. Environnement Ltée. will be applying a biological larvicide by air and ground to stagnant water in order to control larval mosquitoes that impact on the residents of Kanata North and the surrounding areas. The program will use multiple ground applications of the larvicides VectoBac 1200L (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, PCP #21062, liquid) and Vectolex CG (Bacillus sphaericus, PCP # 28008, granular), while VectoBac 200G (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, PCP #18158, granular) will be applied by helicopter. The treatment area map and program details may be accessed on ottawa.ca For further information regarding the larvicide application contact GDG: gdg.environnement@gdg.ca or toll free at 1-877-227-0552

A new exhibit at the Canadian Museum of Nature is really cool. The museum unveiled its permanent Canada Goose Arctic gallery on June 20. The gallery officially opens to the public on June 21. “I hope this gallery inspires Canadians to want to go to the Arctic,” said Meg Beckel, president and chief executive officer of the museum. The 743-square-metre gallery, located on the fourth floor of the museum, aims to take visitors on a trip to the Arctic — and the first stop in the gallery is a multimedia art installation where sights, sounds and even touch bring the Arctic to Ottawa. Beyond Ice is a large art installation made completely of real ice. A partnership between the museum and the National Film Board of Canada, exhibit designer, Daniel Boivin explained Beyond Ice features Arctic scenes and animation by Inuit artists projected on the ice. Touch the ice and it melts, but as Boivin

points out the ice, which is built on steel structures, meant to look like breaking sea ice, will never fully melt — rather consistently stay cool. “The challenge was we had to find an expert in ice display — which we found they are few and far to find,” Boivin said, adding that they found some experts in France who helped design the structure. “It’s live, it melts,” Boivin said. The designer said, however, it would never fully melt — no matter how many excited hands touch the melting structure. “The amount of which it evaporates is equal to the amount that is formed,” Boivin said — meaning it will always stay the same size. When the museum was working on developing ideas for the gallery, Boivin said, whenever they looked to incorporate photos into the exhibit they found the photos just didn’t work. “It just looked like a tourism video,” Boivin said. Boivin credits the NFB for coming up with the creative alternative. “I think they really turned this into an art

form,” he said. Etienne Paquette worked with the NFB to create the installation project, which began in September 2016. He said the end result is all thanks to teamwork. “I’m most proud of is that it speaks to children and adults,” Paquette said. “It’s unusual to express and show film on raw materials.” The film goes from polar night to polar day — and showcases the changes of the Arctic. “I think it’s exceeded everyone’s expectations. No one has ever worked on a medium like this,” Boivin said. ZONES

Visiting the gallery, there is the chance to check out four themed zones covering climate, geography, sustainability and ecosystems — all aimed at immersing visitors in the Arctic’s natural environment and the human connections with the land. See CANADA GOOSE, page 43

Canada Goose Arctic Gallery opened on June 21 Continued from page 42

There are more than 200 specimens and artifacts. Artifacts, interactive games and activities are scattered throughout the gallery. The museum developed the concepts for the gallery with input from an advisory committee, in order to include perspectives of Indigenous communities and experiences. Caitlyn Baikie was a member of the advisory committee for the two years. She said this gallery is truly an act of reconciliation. Born and raised in Nain, Ninatsiavut, Baikie said at first she wasn’t sure whether she wanted to participate in the project — but in the end, said she felt its important for indigenous peoples to actively engage in projects such as this one, in order to ensure indigenous peoples stories and life is shared. “I’m very happy to share a piece of my heart,” Baikie said. There are brief videos, called “people cap-

sules,” in each zone of the gallery, which offer first-person experiences of those who live or work in the Arctic. The advisory committee also helped include another way to showcase indigenous perspectives, by creating a special exhibition space, Northern Voices Gallery located within the permanent gallery, to be curated by Northerners. Its first installation is Inuinnauyugut: We are Inuinnait, which is presented by the Kitikmeot Heritage Society, based in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. The exhibit explores the culture of the Inuinnait (Copper Inuit) and examines the centennial anniversary of Inuinnait contact with Europeans, with around 50 historic artifacts and contemporary items on display. Kitikmeot elders attended the June 20 preview — checking out the display, as well as the entire Arctic gallery. Entry to the Canada Goose Arctic Gallery will be included with general museum admission. For more information about the gallery or the museum, visit nature.ca.

Merrilee Fullerton wins PC nomination in Kanata-Carleton BY JESSICA CUNHA jessica.cunha@metroland.com

Dr. Merrilee Fullerton is the new face of the provincial Progressive Conservative party in Kanata-Carleton. Fullerton won the nomination on June 28, beating out retired Ottawa police staff sergeant Rick Keindel. “This past year has been a tremendous experience speaking with so many residents about the issues concerning them most: health care, mismanagement of hydro, education and the government’s lack of integrity,” she said in a statement. “I appreciate all the encouragement and support that I have received.” She said Ontario can’t afford another four years of Liberal government and she intends to be part of the so-

lution. “The election cannot come soon enough,” Fullerton said. “The PCs are determined to get Ontario back on track and that will begin with defeating (Premier Kathleen) Wynne’s Liberal government.” Ontario PC leader Patrick Brown congratulated Fullerton on her nomination. “I know Merrilee will work tirelessly to ensure Ottawa families pay less and get ahead,” he said in a statement. “I look forward to working with Merrilee as part of our Ontario PC team as we share our positive message of change.” UNIQUE PERSPECTIVES

Fullerton, a Kanata Lakes resident, is a health advocate and retired family physician

with 26 years of experience in family medicine, 17 of those with the Med-Team Clinic in Kanata. She’s lived in the community since 1967. A graduate of the University of Ottawa Medical School, her background includes advisory roles with the Ontario and Canadian medical associations, and membership on the City of Ottawa board of health and local LHIN. “As a result, Merrilee knows firsthand the challenges the Liberal government’s reckless cuts to health care have had on patients,” said Brown. “Merrilee brings a unique perspective to our Ontario PC team.” Her priorities include improving health care, fixing “the energy mess,” supporting high tech, restoring responsible budgets and creating better quality of life.

Even if your car won’t drive, it will drive kidney research.

In an open letter to constituents posted on her website, Fullerton promised she would: • Campaign full-time until polls close election night “to make sure that we win this seat.” • Conduct herself with dignity and respect “and never make you embarrassed that I am your representative.” • Listen to constituents’ concerns and speak at Queen’s Park “with a positive voice for the issues and interests of our community.” • And work co-operatively with other politicians “in the best interests of Kanata-Carleton and the National Capital Region.” The riding of CarletonMississippi Mills will be rejigged into Kanata-Carleton for the 2018 election. Riding incumbent Jack MacLaren was elected as a member of the Ontario PC party but left in May to sit as the first Trillium party member in Queen’s Park. He said he intends to run in the 2018 election.

‘O Canada’ gender neutral changes on hold again BY MICHELLE NASH BAKER michelle.nash@metroland.com

Mauril Bélanger’s dream of making Canada’s national anthem’s English version gender neutral is over — for now. It has been more than a year since the late Ottawa-Vanier MP began his fight for his private member’s bill to have the words changed in Canada’s national anthem to be more gender neutral — from “True patriot love in all thy sons command,” to “True patriot love in all of us command.” It was approved by a vote in the House of Commons. “Just two words — ‘of us’ — would replace ‘thy sons,’” Belanger said in his spring 2016 newsletter. “These two words would make our national anthem more inclusive and pay tribute to all the women who have helped to shape our society. I believe it is important for our national anthem to finally recognize their contribution.” Bélanger, diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in November 2015, died on Aug. 16, 2016. After a year of debate and many proposals for amendments and sub-amendments to the bill, on June 22 the Senate adjourned until September without a final vote on it. Bélanger’s successor, Ottawa-Vanier MP Mona Fortier, said she isn’t pleased there was no final vote on the bill. “I find that it’s very disappointing that we are not moving forward with a vote, and that we are using procedural tricks and game-playing to not go forward with it,” Fortier said. On June 19, Sen. David Wells proposed a sub-amendment to Sen. Lynn Beyak’s proposed amendment that if the bill should pass, it would not come into effect until after July 1. Wells’ sub-amendment replaced July 1 with Sept. 1. “Colleagues, I will be proposing a subamendment to Sen. Beyak’s amendment, but I wanted to make it clear why I was doing that,

and that was the essence of my speech. I don’t think this bill should pass. One thing we can do, as I said, is delay. I know I can’t delay this forever, nor can I do anything single-handedly in here,” Wells said in the Senate. Fortier said she wishes the bill could just pass, noting the House of Commons supported the bill more than a year ago. “It’s hard, it’s not just because Mauril brought it, he pushed it and did great due diligence, but the fact that he passed away. It

makes it hard it’s not going forward,” she said, adding that she thinks this bill would be a great legacy for a man who worked as a parliamentarian for 21 years. The goal for Bélanger had always been to have the anthem reflect the gender neutral changes for July 1, 2017. Fortier, who has many times referred to Bélanger as her mentor, said she supports the bill and the change to make the English version of the anthem gender neutral.

“Hopefully it will be supported in the fall; we are still in 2017,” Fortier said. “July 1 was the objective, but there is still an opportunity to celebrate the anthem.” O Canada was proclaimed as Canada’s national anthem in 1980, one century after it was first sung, in 1880. According to the government of Canada’s website, while the song’s English lyrics changed over the years, no changes have been made to the anthem since the National Anthem Act in 1980.

Each week, a lawyer from the Kanata based Allan Snelling law firm will answer a reader’s question. A weekly guide in legal matters

If you have a general legal question that you would like to have addressed send it via email to Legalmatters@compellingcounsel.com

We are buying our first home. The bank insists that we add my father as a co-owner of the home in order to qualify for the mortgage amount we need. The entire down payment is coming from our savings and we will be making all the mortgage payments. I would rather not include my father as a co-owner. What are your suggestions? Guarantor of the mortgage v being registered on title as owner Adding a person that is not going to be living at the property as a co-owner is generally not recommended, unless you are buying an investment property. You should talk to your bank about whether it would be sufficient to have your father as a guarantor on the mortgage, rather than a co-owner. If the bank still insists on your father’s ownership, there are ways to structure the co-ownership in order to protect everyone’s interest and to minimize your father’s exposure to any tax related consequences of owning a second home. Joint Tenancy v Tenancy in Common There are two ways to structure how two or more individuals can own a real property together. They can either own it as joint tenants or as tenants in common. The main difference between the two is that people who own a property as joint tenants have a right of survivorship, meaning that if either one of them dies, his or her ownership share passes

automatically to the other surviving joint tenant. This is in contrast with tenancy in common, which does not have a right of survivorship, meaning that the share of the deceased tenant in common becomes part of such person’s estate. With tenancy in common you can also specify a size of a share that each co-owner owns. For example, your father can own 1% share of the home and you and your spouse own the remaining 99% share, as tenants in common. This will ensure that your and your spouse’s share becomes part of your estate rather than being transferred to your father in case something happens to both you and your husband.
