West Ottawa name change opposed by Ottawa chamber Jessica Cunha

News - The Kanata Chamber of Commerce has hit a roadblock in an effort to rebrand itself. The business organization proposed a name change to the West Ottawa Chamber of Commerce in May, pending the approval of its members, but the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce says it owns the legal rights to the Ottawa name. The Ottawa chamber sent a letter to the Kanata chamber expressing its opposition to the new name and threatening potential legal action should the new moniker be approved. “From their point of view, I guess they don’t like the use of Ottawa in the name,” said Rosemary Leu, executive director of the Kanata chamber. “We were a little surprised at the wording of the letter from the Ottawa chamber because this is not a done deal – We don’t know if our members will support this at our meeting.” The west end organization, which represents businesses in the communities of Kanata, Goulbourn and West Carleton, is in the process of renaming itself, said Leu. “Our name as a standalone doesn’t fully represent our geographic base,” she added.
