Former staffers demand apology from MPP MacLaren Derek Dunn

Junior B hockey moves back into Glen Cairn Ottawa Canadians home ice now at Jack Charron Arena Jessica Cunha

jessica.cunha@metroland.com

Junior hockey is coming back to the Jack Charron Arena. The Ottawa Canadians Jr. B team will move into Kanata for the upcoming season and work closely with the Lasers Jr. A and midget AAA teams on player development. “The Kanata Lasers showed an interest and we wanted to get closer,” said Tasso Vasilas, owner and head coach of the Jr. B Ottawa Canadians. “It’s very exciting. These kids have dreams of playing at a higher level.” The Canadians used to play out of the Sandy Hill Arena in the east of Ottawa. The move from the city core to the suburbs will allow the Lasers to keep an eye on

potential draftees and Jr. B players could be used as callups. “We’ll be right next door to them,” said Vasilas. “If you're 17 or 18 (years old), they most definitely can be playing Jr. A.” The Canadians first game of the season is Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. against the Ottawa West Golden Knights. “They’re a pretty big rival of ours,” said Vasilas. “Hopefully, we can attract some people to come and watch.” Jeff Jordan, head coach for the Kanata Lasers Jr. A and midget AAA teams, said he’s looking forward to the collaboration between teams in different levels of hockey. “It’s very convenient they’re moving out there,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity to work with Tasso

midget AAA players are from Kanata and Stittsville, while a chunk of local players recruited for the Jr. A team are also from the west end, said John Hill, operations manager for the Kanata Lasers and former general manager of the Ottawa Canadians. Adding a Jr. B team into the mix allows for additional training options. “We’re trying to keep more local kids playing for the local teams,” Hill said. “This way we can have them play in Jr. B and then move

them up to Jr. A, depending on how they develop.”

ship in 2009-10 and again in 2012-13. The Lasers used to play out of Jack Charron, before the team moved to the Kanata Recreation Complex. The team attracted a sizeable crowd for its games at the Glen Cairn arena. “There are quite a few people in a five minute walk from the arena,” said Hill. “The problem we have with the Lasers playing at the KRC – it’s a great facility but it’s in a bad location. On a cold winter’s night you can’t walk to the KRC.”

HOCKEY COMMUNITY

The Ottawa Canadians will play every Tuesday at the Glen Cairn arena during the regular season. With a large community surrounding Jack Charron, the goal is to draw more people to the games. “Its not the old goon-style hockey that you used to see years ago in Jr. B,” said Vasilas. “It’s pretty good hockey.” The Ottawa Canadians won the league champion-

Divers recover drowning victim in Ottawa River John Carter

john.carter@metroland.com

Constance Bay’s idyllic beach has a dangerous side. That was driven home Saturday when a 10-year-old boy from a family visiting from Toronto drowned in its waters. Ottawa Police report the boy got into trouble while wading in the Ottawa River off the Point beach just before 4 p.m. The boy and his 21-year-old brother separated from the family group and were walking out into the river when they came to an area where the shallow water along the sandbar suddenly drops off to a depth of about 15 feet. The child slipped into the deep water and couldn’t get back to safe ground because of the swift moving current. His elder brother attempted to assist him, but also ran into difficulties, report police. Neither boys were strong swimmers. As the elder brother was rescued, the 10-year-old was observed to slip beneath the

Chantiry tweeted: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the 10-year-old drowned. Thanks all emergency services.” It’s a “sad day for all,” tweeted Ottawa police Chief Charles Bordeleau. The Ottawa Police sent out their “prayers and thoughts to the family.”

‘He said he learned that words can hurt, then immediately blamed us’: former MacLaren staffer

at the moment. The executive assistant position she held for two years in MacLaren's office was her first foray into the party side of politics. The Torontonian holds firm to conservatism, and even stands by MacLaren through his numerous recent debacles. She wondered if political correctness (and “He’s a farmer”) played a role in the furor over his vulgar joke about an MP. And she felt it not a big deal that MacLaren was a Twitter follower to a racist who is a previous Conservative riding president and executive director (the MPP cut the Twitter ties after the story broke). However, she did denounce J.P. Dorion’s tweets. Still, she liked the job, saying it was fun and crazy and satisfying. It is also difficult to get back into the field with a tarnished reputation.

MacLaren said his former staff were at fault for the fake photos, but has what he termed superior people in place working in his office now. “We, his former employees, wish to set the record straight,” Jessica Lauren Annis and Debbie Wilson penned in a letter to the editor published in the July 25 Toronto Star. “Both of the above statements are untrue, as MacLaren alone made the decision to use stock photographs; and, his former staff members are in no way inferior to his current staff members.” They said a private letter was sent to MacLaren when he first made the claims, asking for a public retraction and apology. They received no response. MacLaren did not respond to interview requests either. Spokesman Billy Morrison’s emailed response reads, in full: “MPP MacLaren’s position is that it is not appropriate to comment on matters concerning former staff. He values all those who have worked hard in his constituency office.” The public rebuke by the former staffers raises the question of whether Jack MacLaren deceived Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Patrick Brown over who was to blame. Brown is keeping tight-lipped as well, not responding to an interview request. That leaves Annis in a difficult position. The former agriculture lobbyist turned political staffer isn’t working

“I don’t have any ill will. I’d like to see Jack retract those statements and own up,” Annis said. “Inferring someone is unethical or inept – it’s kind of a small political world.” Wilson is less concerned about career prospects. She lives in the rural part of the riding and has returned to her job as a caretaker. If anything, her reputation has benefited rather than taken a hit since leaving MacLaren’s office, she said. Wilson is no longer a MacLaren defender either, noting a level of irony in his return from “sensitivity training” that Brown sent him on following the vulgar joke incident. “He said he learned that words can hurt, then immediately blamed us for what happened,” said the former constituency assistant. She noted nine employees have come and gone from MacLaren’s office, but cited a pre-hire non-disclosure agreement both women signed as reason for not going into details about morale and other office issues. Both women called his claim that staff members made the decision to use false testimonials defamatory, yet do not plan to sue him. They fear a prolonged “he said-she said,” as Annis called it, will benefit neither side. “We are really not allowed to say anything, but we couldn’t let the lies go through,” Wilson said. MacLaren is running for the PC nomination in the reconfigured Kanata-Carleton riding. He faces at least two contenders.

Member of Parliament Kanata-Carleton Canada Child Benefit – Information Session I was thrilled to be joined by Anita Vandenbeld the MP for Ottawa West-Nepean and Chris Rodgers, the 2015 Liberal Candidate for Carleton, for an information session at Tiny Hoppers Daycare in the Riding of Carleton. We had the opportunity to discuss the positive impacts the Canada Child Benefit will have for eligible families across the community. This event provided me with a great opportunity to listen and receive feedback from parents that are helped directly by the Government of Canada’s program. The CCB is simple; families will receive a single payment every month, tax-free, and they will not have to pay back amounts received when they file their tax returns. It is also better targeted to those who need it most; low and middle-income families will receive more benefits while those with the highest incomes will receive lower benefits than under the current system. I could not agree with our Prime Minister more when he says, “The new Canada Child Benefit means more money for healthier groceries, kids’ summer programs, and back-to-school clothes. This is about putting money in the pockets of families who need it most, investing in our future, and helping the Canadian economy grow for the benefit of all.” I encourage everyone to visit http://bit.ly/2aL2gJo to calculate the amount of Child Care Benefit middle and working class families will receive. Prime Minister’s Youth Council The Government of Canada is committed to listening to the issues that matter most to young people. That is why our Prime Minister, in his role as Minister of Youth, committed in Budget 2016 to create a Prime Minister’s Youth Council. Canadians, aged 16 to 24, will provide the Prime Minister with non-partisan advice on national issues such as employment, access to education, building stronger communities as well as climate change and clean growth, among others. Young Canadians who would like to participate are encouraged to apply online by 12 August 2016 at: https://www.canada.ca/en/ campaign/prime-ministers-youth-council.html Grey Cup! – Ottawa 2017 Ottawa is going to be the place to be for 2017! Kanata Food Cupboard welcomes new chair Organization has charitable status reinstated Jessica Cunha

Jenna Sudds has taken over as chair of the Kanata Food Cupboard. A board member for seven years, Sudds has filled various roles including treasurer, operations committee, and vice-chair for the past two years. “To me, giving back to an organization like the Kanata Food Cupboard, it fits well with what I can contribute and how I can help,” said Sudds, who is also executive director of the Kanata North BIA. “The chair position – it’s a unique role to be able to help guide the future of the organization.” The food cupboard board is working on a number of projects this year that include introducing healthier food options. “It’s just such a relevant and critical service in our community,” said Sudds. “The fact we are serving 250 families a month is a

The glitch didn’t affect the organization’s ability to accept donations or continue its operations. “We felt like we needed to be transparent. It’s not something we want to hide,” said Sudds. “When it gets reinstated in a situation like ours it’s like it never happened.” HEALTHY OPTIONS

for children. “About half of who we serve is children,” she said. “We’re working on developing some new messaging around our healthy food preferences and what would be most helpful for the families coming to us.” The food cupboard serves an average of 250 families every month and school snacks are a big need, said Sudds. “We have a kids snack section and we’re looking at what we’re giving out and reflecting, ‘Is that what I feed my children?’ How can we make this look like what these kids should really be getting from a nutrition point of view?” See FOOD, page 7

Food cupboard seeks healthier donations for shelves Continued from page 6

The food cupboard is asking for donations of healthier snacks such as: • healthy granola bars that are peanut free; • unsweetened fruit cups; • unsweetened apple sauce; • juice boxes with less added sugar; • perishable donations of fruits, especially apples and oranges. Alongside healthier options for children is a similar project for all food donations and to “encourage donors to be donating healthier food choices,” said Sudds. “We’re really focusing on the healthy food initiative … and working towards encouraging more healthy food donations, be it perishable foods that are healthy and non-perishables as well.” The food cupboard introduced its fresh foods initiative in 2012, which gave more control to clients when selecting food for their families and offered healthier choices. “We’ve made some great strides in the last five years as far as changing some of our policies, how we go about serving our clients,” said Sudds. “We have improved the food selections. But I do think there’s still considerable work that can be done to enhance those food choices to ensure families are getting the healthiest food choices possible.” A revamped website, modernized logo and improved

Hazy pot rules becoming a joke

T

he organic growth of the pot dispensary business across Canada has almost been laughable — almost. We know how this happened, but it shouldn’t have. The majority of Canadians over recent years have clearly indicated through public opinion polls that they are fine with legal marijuana, and not just for medicinal purposes. The new federal Liberal government campaigned on making pot legal, and says it will do so next year. And in that opening rushed in the clowns. These dispensaries, some of which admittedly seem to be more medicinal focused than some others that come across as glorified head shops, are popping up like weeds across the country and in Ottawa. One of the newest, which seems to be one of those more attuned to the medical angle of the emerging above ground pot trade, is opening up in Stittsville and the local councillor is not amused. Coun. Shad Qadri says he’ll be watching the new medical marijuana dispensary opening in his com-

munity on Iber Road. He says it’s within walking distance of four schools, there was no public consultation about the facility prior to setting up shop, that it hasn’t gone through a zoning process and, by the way, it’s illegal. That’s a pretty damning list of objections, and on all counts Qadri is right. The store’s owner told Metroland Media at an open house that he acknowledges he’s operating in a legal grey area. He said the city and the federal government need to work on improving access to medical marijuana. But the fact is that at this time there is no legal grey area when it comes to opening a business selling pot, for whatever reason, to the public. That is still illegal, and the rush to open these is like a low-tech Uber attack on local government’s ability to maintain order. In this “legal grey area is it silly to enforce minor pot possession cases in light of the pending legalization? Perhaps. But there is nothing hazy about the blossoming of a full-scale pot store industry in the meantime. It is out of control, and these rogue operations should be nipped in the bud.

Marijuana and the legal grey area

I

love my neighbourhood. I can be in nature in two minutes, launch my kayak on the Ottawa River, buy fresh bread at the bakery, I can get my licence renewed at the Ministry office, and now I can buy pot. It was only a matter of time. Within the last few weeks, a marijuana dispensary has opened in my residential Ottawa neighbourhood. I happened to run by it one morning, on my usual route through houses and past the local elementary school. Yes, the dispensary is a block from a school and a few doors down from a music studio that caters to children. But, last time I checked, it’s illegal to sell marijuana. On June 30, a joint statement from federal ministers of justice, public safety and health on the establishment of a task force to legalize and regulate marijuana noted the following: “The posses-

BRYNNA LESLIE

sion, production, and trafficking of marijuana remains illegal. This includes storefronts selling marijuana, commonly known as ‘dispensaries’ and ‘compassion clubs. And yet, dispensaries are showing up everywhere. Why aren’t we shutting these things down? Personally, I don’t see the point in legalizing marijuana. I see the benefit of it for medicinal purposes in a controlled way. Otherwise, I prefer marijuana as a socially unacceptable drug. I don’t want my kids using it. I don’t want them to think it’s a socially acceptable habit. I prophesize that

governments will try to revoke legalization 20 years from now when they realize that marijuana is a public health burden comparable to alcohol or smoking. I also realize I’m in the minority on this one. The majority of Canadians support the legalization of marijuana. A poll of 1,000 people conducted by The Globe and Mail and Nanos in February found 68 per cent of Canadians support legalization. In Ontario, more than 70 per cent support legalization, while British Columbians are 75 per cent in favour of legalized pot. Most of those polled believe weed should be sold at marijuana dispensaries, similar to the ones emerging in neighbourhoods across the country, except regulated. Even me, in my conservative stance, could accept this. But why are we allowing illegal shops to operate in the absence of laws?

There seems to be little, if any, appetite among local officials to shut down these places, which are emerging rapidly in urban centres and residential neighbourhoods across the country In Vancouver, it’s rumoured there are more pot shops than coffee shops. The city has placed restrictions on locations near vulnerable populations, but not much else. In Toronto, a raid of 47 dispensaries in May and June led to the arrest of 90 people. Police laid more than 250 criminal charges, including possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking and 71 proceeds of crime, yet some of the raided locations simply reopened the following morning. And despite the opening of up to eight dispensaries in Ottawa in recent weeks, the police have yet to take any significant action. Marijuana is illegal. operate is not in the same realm of regulatory safety as eventual legalization. Don’t take my word for it. Canada Child Benefit will help middle class families To the editor,

Today, too many middle class families struggle to get ahead. It is harder and harder for families to save money for the high cost of raising their children as the cost of living keeps rising. During our first year in government we announced the implementation of the Canada Child Benefit: a simpler, tax-free, more generous and better targeted federal tax benefit for those who need it most. This will help Canadian families to save, invest and grow our economy. We are delivering on our promise to replace the Universal Child Care Benefit and the Canada Child Tax Benefits with the Canada Child Benefit. As part of our government’s first budget tabled

on March 2016, families are now receiving this benefit. Eligible Canadian families who have a child under 18 will receive their first Canada Child Benefit cheque, and this single monthly benefit will be recalculated every July based on information from families’ income tax and benefit return from the previous year. It is tax-free and Canadian families will not have to pay back the amounts received when they file their tax returns each year. Parenting is one of the most important jobs; the CCB will give nine out of 10 Canadian families more money in their pockets to help with the high costs of raising their kids. It will provide a maximum annual benefit of up to $6,400 per child under the age of six and up to $5,400

per child aged six through 17. We are proud that we are now giving back to Canadian families, while we continue to build an economy that works for the middle class. I encourage everyone to visit bit.ly/2aL2gJo to calculate the amount of Child Care Benefit middle and working class families will receive. I hope everyone is having a great summer and enjoying the warm weather with their families. It is an honour to represent our community of Kanata-Carleton. As always I am happy to hear any feedback you may have and I encourage you to let me know what your priorities are by visiting my website at bit.ly/2aQ5qwc.

The creation of a Business Improvement Area is being proposed for the Kanata Centrum, Signature Centre and surrounding area. The retail area is starting to see some vacancies, said Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson, and a BIA could help in promoting the area both to new businesses and patrons.

BIA proposed for Kanata Centrum, Signature areas Business organization could be running by New Year if approved Jessica Cunha

jessica.cunha@metroland.com

A group of business members are discussing the possibility of creating a business improvement area in the Kanata Centrum, Signature Centre and surrounding area. Tentatively calling it the Kanata Central BIA, Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson said she’s been in talks with 10 people from a mix of businesses in the area so far and the feedback seems to be positive. “I didn’t realize how interested people would be,” said Wilkinson, who is working to put together a steering committee that will lead the discussion moving forward. The group – which includes Jask Salon and Day Spa, the 3 Brewers, the Unrefined Olive, La Mode Fine Jewellers and Tag Along Toys, among others – has met three times since June to see if the interest is there. “We’re at the very early stages right now,” said Wilkinson. “We want

to make sure people are prepared.” Jenna Sudds, executive director of the Kanata North BIA in the high tech business park, said she applauds the plan. “I think it’s a terrific idea,” she said. “I think a BIA in that area, one that could focus on that area, on marketing and promoting those businesses, would be worthwhile.” If area businesses vote to implement a BIA, the goal is to have the organization running by the New Year. “They think it’s really important to have it sooner than later,” said Wilkinson, adding the final decision will be up to the businesses that would be encompassed by a BIA. “We have to go through the process and the process has to be done right. If people don’t know what it is they’ll just say ‘no’ and that will destroy the ability to go ahead.” See BIAs, page 12

BIAs help attract new business, patrons

A draft of the potential boundaries of a Kanata Central BIA include the Centrum and Signature centres, and surrounding areas.

Continued from page 11

A public meeting is being planned for the fall and two months would be needed for voting. BIAs are formed by local businesses, property owners and employees within commercial districts to promote and improve the area where they work. A “small cost” based on a property’s total assessed value is added to property taxes to help fund the organization, said Wilkinson. A Kanata Central BIA could look at improving pedestrian paths to connect the shopping areas, beautifying through joint landscape efforts, and combined marketing plans. “As a large retail community they can work together to do things to beautify the area and improve it,” said the councillor. “It puts local control into doing things in that part of the community. You can relate better to people in your area.” There are 18 BIAs

Wilkinson said she and her staff will be starting to meet with businesses in the area to explain the process and answer questions people may have. Up to 80,000 expected at annual GreekFest Melissa Murray

mmurray@metroland.com

GreekFest will leave attendees feeling far from Ottawa without having to leave home, Aug. 11 to 21. “You just feel like for those 11 days you are part of a culture that we all hold true to our heart,” said Eleni Dellis, general manager of the Hellenic Community of Ottawa. “And for those 11 days we kind of feel

like we are taken back to Greece. We have the Greek food, we have the Greek music, we have the Greek entertainment and everyone is feeling very festive.” From when the gates open to the time they close, musicians will be there to entertain. For much of that time, the sounds of the festival will blend with some traditional dancing and other entertainment. See FOOD, page 15 FILE

Students from the Hellenic Community of Ottawa Dance School perform a traditional dance during the 2015 edition of Greek Fest on Prince of Wales Drive. The festival celebrates all that is Greek, from roast lamb dishes to traditional Greek folk music.

Food expected to be a major attraction for festival goers Continued from page 14

Anywhere between 60,000 and 80,000 people are expected to attend this year’s festival, said Dellis. It is located at 1315 Prince of Wales Dr., between Baseline Road and Meadowlands Drive. The festival takes place each year around Aug. 15; it’s a day commemorating the Virgin Mary, for whom the Greek Orthodox Church is named. That day hosts the official opening ceremonies, beginning at 12:30 p.m. and followed by an Olympic torch lighting cer-

emony. The festival first started as just a one or two day celebration, then in 1975 it took off, said Dellis. Now, it’s an 11-day rain or shine party. The festival operates on an “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” policy, Dellis said, adding festival favourites such as the food and entertainment are staples. The tented area showing off lambs roasted on spits is something people are always attracted to, she said. Food at the festival includes souvlakis,

gyros, greek poutine and roasted lamb and desserts ranging from baklava – a thin pastry stacked and topped with honey, sugar, cinnamon and nuts – to milopita – an apple cake. The festival is bringing in a new band from Montreal for this year. Alexandros will perform Aug. 14 to Aug. 17. There will be church tours in English and French, Greek language lessons, the popular Zorba dance show, olive oil tastings, Greek mythology seminars, dance groups and more. There will also be a bit of a change in the layout of the festival. Food will be grouped

together under one tent, Dellis said. She added the change will be more efficient and better for festival goers. “On our very busy days we have line-ups that literally go right down Prince of Wales, so we are trying to make ourselves better and more efficient.” The festival is free to attend, and is open during the week from 4:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. On the weekends the festival runs from noon to 11 p.m. There’s also a free shuttle service to and from St. Pius X School on Fisher Avenue.

Melissa Murray

Local police have a new target for August. Ottawa and Gatineau police will be on the hunt for impaired drivers and and will be monitoring roundabout safety this month. According to statistics kept through the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP), due to impaired driving there were 1,680 collisions involving pedestrians, resulting in 17 deaths and 717 injuries between 2010 and 2014. When it comes to roundabouts, during the same period, there were 403 crashes, resulting in 44 injuries. STEP uses geographical statistics from the RCMP, OPP and Ottawa Police, as well as provincial safety campaigns to determine a focus for monthly enforcement. Ottawa police Const. Marc Soucy said the selection is in line with the time of year, the public’s priorities and also traffic issues. “We try to target specific incidents that are specific to

In others, much like distracted driving, we continue to see that any given day when staff go out and do enforcement there are really far too many people doing it,” Wilkinson said. In the 2015 police annual report, criminal code traffic offences were up 1.7 per cent over 2104. That’s attributed to an increase in impaired operation offences (two per cent) and Dangerous Operation of motor Vehicle (nine per cent), provincial traffic offences were down none per cent. Barbers, hairstylists to give free haircuts to Pinecrest Terrace kids Megan DeLaire mdelaire@metroland.com

Using their experience as immigrants and a snippet of help from community sponsors, three Kanata teens have made it their mission to give haircuts to kids who might not otherwise get them. Cuts for Kids organizers Ibrahim Musa, 17, Johnny Xi and Ahmed Mohamed, both 19, and a team of volunteers from Hair Fellas Barbershop and a local salon will do just that at Pinecrest Terrace Community House, on Aug. 11. The west Ottawa event – their third since founding Cuts for Kids – will invite children whose families struggle to pay for extras like hair cuts to climb into a barber or salon chair and ask for whatever style of haircut they want. For girls, Cuts for Kids will partner with a salon whose stylists will also be taking haircut requests. Musa, who founded Cuts for Kids, said although the nonprofit organization hosted its first event at the Overbrook Community Centre on May 21, the idea that sparked its creation occurred to him last summer. “I had the idea about a year ago to start an organization to give back to the community,” he said. “And it was something that I wanted to do as a former refugee to help make the world around me a little better.” Musa and his parents arrived in Canada as refugees from Iraq in 2002 when he was three years old. Similarly, Xi moved to Canada from China with his mother when he was six years old, and Mo-

Bekkir Bouzioukh from Hair Fellas Barbershop works on a hair cut during a Cuts for Kids event at the Overbrook Community Centre on May 21. hamed moved to Canada with his family after living in Cairo, Egypt for 14 years. Musa said he was inspired to create Cuts for Kids when an acquaintance who worked at a day camp for underprivileged children told him about a boy at the camp who was intensely self-conscious about his hair because his parents couldn’t afford to have it cut. “And that kind of brought me back to my childhood,” he said.

“Because as a newly arrived refugee we didn’t have money at all to do anything, especially haircuts.” He said Cuts for Kids’ work so far has been made possible with help from St. John’s Ambulance, who provided free first aid training for Cuts for Kids Volunteers and a first aid kit, Staples Copy and Print, where Cuts for Kids does its promotional printing at a discounted price, and Couns. Tobi Nussbaum, Marianne Wilkinson and Mathieu Fleury, who have

covered some of the administrative and travel costs of the organization’s three events. “We’re supported by the community and we run by the generosity of the community,” Musa said. “If it weren’t for all these folks helping us out, giving us sponsorships, giving us free training, we wouldn’t be here today.” But one community partner has been with Cuts for Kids from the very beginning and plans to

stick around for the foreseeable future. Musa said he approached Hair Fellas Barbershop owner Carlos Noja for help with the project last summer. Since then, four barbers from Noja’s shop have been at every each event, cutting hair for four hours at a time. “When I thought of the idea I first brought it to them and they’ve supported me and encouraged me,” Musa said. “And they’ve done every event and are doing every event on my calendar so far.” Noja said the partnership has breathed life into a project he himself had already considered before. The timing and the concept were perfect. “When (Musa) came to me and proposed his idea I was like ‘that’s exactly what I was thinking and that’s when we did it together,” he said. “He kind of read my mind.” Although he and his busy staff use their personal time to join Cuts for Kids at each event – the second session took place at Morrison Gardens Community House in Nepean on July 14 – Noja said it’s well worth their time. “What we gain from it is the experience of working with kids,” he said. “And just really seeing them smile is all we care about. Because at the end of the day when they grow up they’re probably going to end up in the shop. So at least they get a demonstration of who we are.” For more information about the Cuts for Kids Pinecrest Terrace event, visit facebook.com/ events/509758619214209. For more information about Cuts for Kids, visit cutsforkids. org. It runs Aug. 11 from 3 to 6 p.m. at 2483-B Iris St.

The shipping company submitted a site plan to the city in July for a parcel of land located at 8825 Campeau Dr. The subdivision, which the city is calling the Kanata West Business Park, is expected to contain a mix of retail, service, employment and light industrial uses. to David Wise, program manager of development review, said the application fits within the current zoning and the application is “compliant with the Official Plan direction for this area.” The application from UPS features a proposed building with 40 loading bays measuring about 3,770 square metres, with the ability to expand in the future. The terminal would have three entrances off Campeau Drive – two for large trucks, and one for employees and visitors that would enter a 127-space parking lot. A propane fuel pad is also in the application. UPS is planning to purchase the currently vacant parcel of land, which measures about 4.2 hecatres from Taggart Realty Management, according to the application. A UPS spokesperson said details on the application couldn’t be provided as the project has not been finalized. 2016 garlic crop ready for sale Volunteers have done all the hard work and all local cooks need to do is serve dinner. The 2016 crop of garlic is available at Silver Spring Farm at 1701 Robertson Rd. The annual sale of garlic raises funds for the Ottawa-Carleton Association for Persons with Developmental Disabilities. Despite a fairly dry start to the growing season, organizers say the crop looks good and – following the recent harvest – the garlic is drying before going on sale at the farm on Aug. 11. The garlic is for sale every day from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. To check on availability, you can call the garlic hotline at 613-5698993, ext. 409.

City Councillor Kanata South Inlet Control Device installation in Bridlewood The City of Ottawa has been installing Inlet Control Devices (ICD’s) in Bridlewood catch basins this summer. ICD’s help to manage the flow of storm water by controlling the rate in which water drains from the roads into the sewer system. The ICD’s that the City of Ottawa has been installing add an extra layer of protection to the homes in our community, as without these devices the sewers can get overloaded and the water can backup the sewer lateral into your home.

Jessica Cunha jessica.cunha@metroland.com

Construction is set to begin in earnest on Hein House before the end of summer. A ground-breaking celebration was held May 31 for the residential wing of the Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice in Kanata. Now that all approvals are in place and the tender process is underway, the builder is expected on site towards mid-August, said Kristina Voth-Childs, communications co-ordinator. “It’s been a long time coming,” she said, adding staff, volunteers and others in the community are excited to see the residence move from dream to reality. “We’re finally seeing some progress,” she said. “Our need every year is growing. We need more services so this is a step in the right direction.” The 10-bed residence will provide free around-theclock care for people in their last days and weeks of life, while the two respite rooms will offer a space for shortterm care. To help finish the project, Hospice Care Ottawa has launched a “Brick by Brick” fundraiser to outfit the rooms

Inlet Control Devices have been installed in all areas of Kanata and throughout the entire city. There have been over 750 ICD’s installed in Bridlewood and as a result, you will observe water on the street more frequently during rain events. Water on the street is a sign that your basements are being protected.

The

organization receives no government funding for capital projects. “While $6 million has been raised towards the build of Hein House many donations were made in the form of pledges, which will come in over the next few years,” said Voth-Childs. “We do have a need for additional cash on hand to help cover the costs of construction.” It will take about a year to complete the 12,592-squarefoot addition, which will feature bathrooms in each room and access to the gardens. Hospice Care Ottawa has 19 beds – nine at the May

Court Hospice in Old Ottawa South and 10 at Central West Hospice located in the west end. The beds located at Central West are a stopgap until Hein House is built. “We hope this is one step in the right direction in getting more hospice beds and getting more exposure,” said Voth-Childs. Last year the organization served 357 people in residential hospice – up from 290 in 2014. All programs are provided at no charge. YEARS YEARS

The ICD’s that have been installed will keep the water on the surface for a longer period of time to allow for significant amounts of water to drain into the sewer system at a constant rate as opposed to too much water entering the system all at once. The ponding/ puddles that you see on the roadways are normal and should only last for about an hour or two after the end of the rainfall. If you notice water ponding beyond a couple of hours then please call 3-1-1. We all need to know that one of the impacts of controlling the flow of storm water mean that for a short time there will be water on the streets. Sometimes small debris may collect around catch basins (drain cover) in the road. While many residents are able to clear the catch basins of debris themselves more quickly, you may also want to create a service request to advise the City of a catch basin that is: • Blocked (causing flooding on the road) • Missing • Sunken or raised • Broken You will be required to provide: • The street name and number or street name and intersection closest to where the catch basin is located. For further information, please do not hesitate to contact my office, or visit the City of Ottawa’s website, www.ottawa.ca.

SERVING KANATA NORTH

City Councillor, Kanata North REMINDER - PUBLIC MEETING - BUS SERVICE CHANGES, August 18, 7-9 pm, Richcraft Recreation Complex Kanata (Minto Room), 4101 Innovation Dr. – Due to the new Park and Ride at Innovation Drive bus routes will undergo major changes starting on January 3rd. There are a number of issues with these changes, so review the details on the OC or my website and send in your comments to OC with a copy to me. Do attend the meeting to ensure that we get routes that will provide the best service possible. TOWN HALL MEETING, SEPT 12, 7 PM, KANATA SENIORS CENTRE features development proposals for 3 apartments adjacent to Village Green and UPS facility on Campeau at Palladium. BUDGET CONSULTATION MEETING – SAVE THE DATE, Sept. 15th, 6:30 pm, Beaverbrook Library for your chance to input into the 2017 budget, through a workshop process, before it is finalized. MY ROLE AS COUNCILLOR – Last week I wrote about my role in the community, stating that what is important is the residents and meeting their needs, rather than my position. Meeting these needs is complex, particularly when residents have different views. As promised, here are some examples: an early issue in my career related to child care. At that time there were no childcare facilities in Kanata, other than informal arrangements. After a serious accident where a mother of two small children was killed, I was contacted about getting a facility in Kanata. Some felt it was wrong to have children in childcare but after dialogue with many, putting a support group together and finding a place in a local church, the first municipal childcare facility in the region opened here. A year later, with a grant from the province, the Elsie Stapleford Child Care building was constructed and continues to provide service to this day. A similar situation, led to construction of 40 units of public housing for seniors in Kanata. More recently the ‘mosquito’ issue, led to a program being implemented. In that case my role was to hear about a problem, find a potential solution, check with residents on their view of the solution and then undertake the technical approvals to implement it. Presently dealing with bus route changes in the community is underway. REGISTRATION FOR FALL & WINTER RECREATION PROGRAMS – started on Monday. It is likely that many of you may have experienced delays on opening night, particularly for Aquatic registrations. The current system cannot meet high demand, so last year the City started a process to get a new system that will resolve those issues. Proposals have now been received and are being evaluated. It will take about 18 months to have a contract finalized, the specific solution designed, the system implemented and staff trained. The ‘Go Live’ date is projected for January 2018. In the meantime, please be patient and do plan to shake up your routine and take part in the many activities provided by the City and outlined in the fall/winter Recreation eGuide on Ottawa.ca.

Kanata hockey academy hits the ice in September Lasers, Holy Trinity partnering to offer hockey co-op class Jessica Cunha jessica.cunha@metroland.com

A new partnership between the Kanata Lasers and Holy Trinity Catholic High School will see a hockey academy program hit the ice this September. Based on the Hockey Canada Skills Academy model, students enrolled in the program will have one class in the first semester dedicated to their on-ice development, said John Hill, operations manager for the Kanata Lasers. “It’s a big move for us to get kids who may not be in our organization but who want to get more time on the ice,” said Hill. “It’s a complete program.” Hockey Canada recently accredited the local program. Paul Robert, educational liaison with the Lasers, approached a number of school boards and junior A teams to create skills academies this year. Programs are also being launched in Brockville, Carleton Place and Cornwall this fall. The Kanata academy is the only one in Ottawa, said Robert. “Hopefully next year this venture will grow,” he said. “It’s a win-win-win for every-

former assistant coach of the Ottawa 67’s, will run the onice instruction at the Kanata Recreation Complex. “The skills academy provides players with an opportunity to get extra ice time and develop their skills as part of the curriculum,” said Jordan. “For us it’s a great opportunity. I'm really anxious to see it take off.” SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

levels of hockey. About 15 to 20 spots are being offered for the first semester, which runs September to January. The only restriction is students must be registered for classes at Holy Trinity, said Robert. “If someone is interested, they’ll have to ask for a transfer to Holy Trinity,” he said, adding the parents will be responsible for transportation to the school in the morning and from the rink in the afternoon. See HOCKEY, page 25

Hockey academy to increase ice time for players Continued from page 24

A study space will be provided at the rink following instruction where students can wait to be picked up by their parents. The program costs $2,000, which covers the ice rental at the Kanata Recreation Complex, busing to the rink and paying the instructors. “For the cost it’s very affordable,” said Robert. “It’s cost recovery based – that means they’re not making money – the school is not making money, the Lasers are not making money.” The skills academy isn’t a league and is not competitive, he stressed. Instead, the program aims to help players develop on-ice skills they wouldn’t otherwise have time to work on. “Here the mandate is totally different – there’s no team. You're there to improve the player, not improve the team,” said Robert. The program will also

bring in sports physiotherapists, nutritionists and other professionals who can help players develop their game, said Hill. The Hockey Canada Skills Academy model aims to make hockey better by increasing the amount of ice time players receive. It promotes co-operation between school boards and hockey associations to better use available ice time – which is often during school hours. “The problem is everybody wants the ice from 6 to 10 (p.m.),” said Hill. “That’s why we want to do a skills academy and use the ice during the day.” For more information on the program, email skillsacademy@kanatalasers.com.

After listing off what the money will be used for, including fixing sloping floors and patios, and resurfacing driveways, Naqvi said the funding is extremely important. “I know all this sounds very unsexy. We’re not building a new building, we’re not doing something incredible and new, but I think that every single one of you know … how important this is,” he said.

Question: I have been off work since May 2016 and have been trying to obtain short-term disability insurance since then. My doctor has provided me with three sick notes since then and at our last appointment she told me not to work. However, my application for short-term disability insurance has been denied. I’ve given the disability insurer the notes from my doctor and I’ve gone through the appeal process but have been denied again. My employer is now asking when I will return and I’ve booked an appointment with my doctor to see what she thinks. What should I do? It is not uncommon for disability insurers to deny an initial application for short-term disability benefits. Often the reason cited for the denial is a lack of medical evidence of a disability. If the only documentation you have provided to the insurer are sick notes from your doctor it is usually of assistance to obtain further medical records from your doctor including something documenting your diagnosis. Often, after receiving such additional documentation an insurer will approve an application for disability benefits. There’s also money to replace two old windows and repair the driveway, which makes for challenging access to the residence building and is a safety issue. “It’s definitely needed,” she said, adding without the money the organization would have had to pull resources from programming or put together a fundraiser. “It’s affording us the privilege of the things we need without putting a lot of time and resources into trying to get that funding elsewhere.” St. Mary’s Home is among nine local nonprofit agencies which in total will receive $701,400 for repairs and renovations from the provincial government. Other agencies receiving funds include: • Youville Centre Ottawa-Carleton: $15,300 • Crossroads Children’s Centre: $48,900 • Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre: $15,000 • Roberts/Smart Centre: $160,000 • Talitha House Inc.: $9,700 • The Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa: $63,500 • Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health: $60,000 • Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa: $173,000 Roberts/Smart Centre, a children and youth mental health centre, will use the money for its three residential program buildings, including the secure treatment unit. She said the bathrooms haven’t been updated since the 1980s. Redoing the driveway and fixing a patio will also help the treatment centres blend into the neighbourhood. “When we fundraise, we put that towards school programs and bursaries for kids. People

Kanata singer ‘the One’ after winning female artist competition Sixteen-year-old working on single with Toronto record company Jessica Cunha jessica.cunha@metroland.com

A 16-year-old singer from Kanata Lakes is working with a Toronto record company after winning a Bluesfest competition last month. Emma Lamontagne surprised herself by taking top honours at the She’s the One competition for emerging female artists at RBC Bluesfest. “I was sitting backstage with really talented performers – I didn’t understand when my name

was called out,” said the Grade 11 All Saints Catholic High School student. “The stage manager was laughing. She said she wished she had a camera to capture my expression.” Lamontagne will work with Universal Music Canada and Cadence Music Group to record and release a single, with Bluesfest covering all expenses related to the production. Next year, she’ll be invited back to the music festival to perform her

own set. She said she didn’t enter the contest expecting to win but is very excited for the year ahead. “I was just happy with the exposure,” she said. “A year ago I wouldn’t have seen me in this situation at all.” SHE’S THE ONE

Lamontagne has taken classical piano and voice lessons since she was three years old but it wasn’t until last November that she began performing more modern and contemporary pieces at school events. Lamontagne wowed the Bluesfest judges with a mixture of her vocal performance and stage presence. Technical difficulties with the piano caused her to improvise and talk with the audience until the problem was fixed. “I was talking about school – I had an essay due and the teacher wouldn’t give me an extension even though I was performing at Bluesfest,” she said. “I just kept talking and talking.” See MUSIC, page 33

Music about affecting others: singer Continued from page 31

Lamontagne performed Sweater Weather, by the Neighbourhood, as one of her two covers. Describing her style as acoustic pop, she chose not to perform any of her original material because she thought it could be “risky” if the judges didn’t like it, she said. And it paid off. “They liked my voice and my personality,” she said. Lamontagne said she enjoys singing and performing as a way to connect with others. “It tends to make people

happy and it makes me really happy,” she said. “There are some songs that just hit you – they affect you and you’re different after listening to it. That’s my goal, to affect people.” She plans to study music and songwriting, with a minor in psychology, once she finishes high school. “You can help a lot of people through music; the same with psychology,” she said. “I’m just attracted to helping people.” Check out Lamontagne’s YouTube channel “Emma Lamontagne” to follow her progress.

Coalition makes recomendations following Abdi death Melissa Murray

A coalition is calling for acknowledgement of what they say is a crisis in how police interact with members of visible minority communities and those with mental health issues. That was one of 10 recommendations put forward by the group, called Justice for Abdirahman, at a press conference on Aug. 4. The coalition represents Somali community members and Somali organizations in Ottawa. The coalition formed after the death of

Abdirahman Abdi, a 37-year-old Somali man, who died following what witnesses say was a violent confrontation with police on the steps of his apartment building. The confrontation is now being investigated by the Special Investigations Unit. Police had been called multiple times to respond to a man engaging in “assaultive” behaviour at a Hintonburg coffee shop on July 24. At the press conference, there were statements from organiza-

based director of anti-racism and human rights with the Canadian Labour Congress, added it’s time people held the mayor accountable for the city’s police service. “My message to the mayor of Ottawa: make sure no other Abdi gets killed under your watch,” he said. The group emphasized they aren’t going to sit back and wait for change. They’re hoping the recommendations will be looked at while the SIU investigation continues, .COM

“While we look at these cases, we see a clear pattern – a black man in distress, police are called and the black man ends up dead,” Parsons said. She said in Abdi’s case and others, race is an issue. “Race makes the difference,” she said, adding she has little faith in the SIU’s investigation. Mayor Jim Watson also took some heat at the event. Several of those who spoke said the mayor attended Abdi's funeral as a public relations stunt and photo opportunity. “If the mayor had any backbone instead of showing up for a nice packaged photo op at Mr. Abdi’s funeral he would have already arranged a meeting with the Somali community,” Parson said. Watson has told media he was invited to the funeral and is scheduling meetings with the Somali community. Yamikani Msosa, public education/media co-ordinator and support worker, agreed with Parson’s statement. “It’s clear the mayor’s response is sending a message that black lives are not as valuable as others,” she said. David Onyalo, Ottawa-

and they’ll continue to make sure that Abdi’s name stays in the news. “We are in for the long haul,” Parsons said. The other recommendations put to local, provincial and federal governments, the police service, the police services board and police oversight agencies include: • Strike a task force to examine how police interact with members of racialized communities and those with mental health issues and commit to programs to address the systemic problems. • Respond to the Ontario Human Rights Commission’s assertion that there isn’t an effective mechanism to hold police accountable. • Amend legislation to ensure the SIU makes reports public until the oversight organization is overhauled. • Reassign police officers under investigation and prohibit public interaction. • Implement ombudsman recommendations made in the A Matter of Life and Death report. • Require agencies to collect and publicly report racebased data on police encounters. • Create a task force to review and implement Coroner’s Inquest recommendations made since 2001. • Require all police to wear body cameras and have cameras in police vehicles.

In living colour A group of local youth, with the support of the Kanata Chinese Seniors Support Centre, put on a night of performances, food, and cultural experiences in Whalen Park on Aug. 3. Everyone enjoyed watching the performance of the Chasing Dreams dance group, a local senior’s dance group that regularly dances in Whalen Park. After watching some performances, audience members were invited to learn some simple dances, taught by the group. SUBMITTED

Missing pie becomes a real mystery for Mother

F

ather, sitting in his chair with the Ottawa Farm Journal folded on his lap, was eyeing the two berry pies Mother had made and where they were now sitting on the bake table at the back door. She was at the old pine kitchen table, and without taking her eyes off her diaries, she told Father his bedtime snack would not include a slice of the berry yelling at the top of her lungs, ordering Everett to pies. “There’s a couple sticky fetch Father from the barn buns in the cupboard you at once! “He has taken a pie, and can have,” she said. It always amazed me how probably has eaten most of Mother could see and know it by now, and will expect to everything anyone was do- have a full breakfast when ing or thinking without he comes in.” She was sure hoppin’ mad. benefit of raising her eyes! MARY COOK Memories put it someplace, or maybe Earl, who sometimes walked in his sleep had taken it off the bake table. “Well, it’s gone, and I’ll find out who took it, and there’ll be hang to pay, I can tell you,” she said. The day passed and there was still no sign of the pie, and the remaining pie had to be sliced in small wedges to go around that night for supper, and no one had yet owned up to taking the missing one, plate and all. Well, the next morning, was a repeat of the morning before. Mother was yelling at the top of her lungs to get Fa-

ther from the barn at once! Then we saw what she was yelling about. There on the bake table was the empty pie plate, spotlessly clean, shining like a new nickel, with a note written on the back of a cigarette box thanking the lady of the house for the best pie he had ever eaten! Shivers ran up and down my back when we finally realized a tramp had jumped the freight train that passed through our farm, climbed the West Hill, and came up to our house in the dead of night. Father said the smell of the berry pie was more than he could ignore, and he made off with it, pie plate and all. He had the good manners to wash the tin in the river, and return it to our kitchen, putting it exactly where he had found it the night before. Well, that had Mother ranting about unlocked doors! No one in Northcote locked their doors.

Ours didn’t even have a key! For a couple of nights Mother propped a chair under the doorknob, but Father convinced her the tramps meant no harm. He said he knew they often slept in the barn. And they were hungry... always hungry.

It didn’t take long for the tramps to know they could come over the West Hill, day or night, and there would always be something there to fill their aching stomachs. Like so much else in those lean Depression years, the tramps were simply a symbol of the times.

Well, Father came in and was as surprised as Mother, and swore up and down he hadn’t laid eyes on the pie since going to bed

Riding the rails was their life, and getting a meal or a snack wherever they could, kept them alive. After that, Mother often left a paper bag of sandwiches on the back stoop in a pail with a lid on it.

session at home before flying to Rio. Most sported red and white, inspired by the Canadian flag. Some wore t-shirts printed with ‘go Erika,’ and some lined up for autographs and photos with Kaba. Seltenreich-Hodgson, who was already in Brazil by then, later joined the party via live video chat. Kaba and SeltenreichHodgson, both graduates of Nepean high schools, earned spots on Canada’s Olympic team for the first time this year – Kaba for the men’s 110-metre hurdles race and Seltenreich-Hodgson for the women’s 200-metre individual medley swimming event. After a barbecue dinner, Nepean-Carleton MPP Lisa MacLeod praised Seltenreich-Hodgson for her dedication and character before the swimmer addressed the room from 8,275 kilometres away. “Erika, I am so proud of

you,” MacLeod said. “You’re brave, you’re talented, you’re dedicated to excellence and if there’s somebody from this community that I think will win the 200-metre women’s individual medley, it’s Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson.” The first-time Olympian appeared on a projector screen via live video chat as the crowd chanted her name, and she thanked everyone for turning out to show their support. “I just popped in to say ‘hi’ and thank everybody for coming,” she said. “It’s an honour to have a crowd come out to celebrate this event. I think that’s awesome. I wish I could be there in person.” Seltenreich-Hodgson and Kaba talked with each other through laptop screens about the excitement both at home and in Brazil, and then MacLeod told the audience the story of the day she learned all about Kaba’s character. Kaba, she said, had agreed to join her on a tour of Cana-

About 150 fans, relatives and former class mates and teachers gathered at the Barrhaven branch of the Royal Canadian Legion on Aug. 3 to wish good luck to Sekou Kaba and Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson, two Nepean athletes competing in their first Olympic games this summer. da Day events across Ottawa on July 1, but when the day came, he did more than just take in the sights and sounds of Canada Day in Ottawa. “Sekou not only decided to come and show his celebrity and wear his Canadian uniform and meet people and shake their hands,” she said.

“Sekou brought his hurdles to every event, and he did a demonstration for the kids, young and old.” As the crowd chanted his name, Kaba took to the stage to give his own address. He traced his route to Rio from his native Guinea to the United States, where he moved with his family in

2001 and was bullied for not speaking English, and finally to Nepean, where he relocated in 2007 and began his career as a serious athlete. “Things get tough in life,” he said. “But you need to go with the mindset that eventually it will be okay and you’re not the only one who is either

currently going through that problem or has experienced that problem. So reach out to those around you.” As he scanned the crowd for familiar faces, he pointed out his long-time girlfriend Kashani Thomas and his high school track and field coach, whom he credited with enriching his high school experience in Ottawa. He also thanked the rest of the 150 supporters gathered at the event for their encouragement and enthusiasm. “When I get some downtime later tonight I’ll think about every single one of you,” he said. “And be truly appreciative that you came out here tonight to show your support as I make my way to Rio to make all of you guys proud.” Seltenreich-Hodgson and Kaba are scheduled to compete on Aug. 8 and 15 respectively. This week’s puzzle answers in next week’s issue

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, you know how to lay on the charm to get a job done, and you might need to work your magic this week. Some might scoff, but the end results will be positive. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, your work ethic is recognized by superiors this week. Accept this well-earned praise, but keep working hard to maintain your reputation. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, while you may have one foot on the ground, your head seems to be up in the clouds. Make an effort to regain your focus so you can finish the tasks at hand. CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Problem-solving does not interest you this week, Cancer. You just want things spelled out to you in black and white. If things become too complicated, ask for clarification. LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, the pressure to make decisions is easing up, and you can finally relax and focus on entertaining things. Take some time to strengthen an important relationship as well. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, ideas in your head are developing so quickly that you can’t pin one down. Your creativity is a feather in your cap, so make an effort to sort out your ideas.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Decisions that seemed so easy to make just a few days ago now seem like uphill battles. Don’t sell yourself short, as you can handle the challenges ahead. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 You have an ability to attract power and love, Scorpio. Make the most of this power and try to help others as much as possible. You will be glad for having done so. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, recent contributions on the job are finally getting you some special attention. Your efforts paint you as a team player, and others are taking notice. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, a big decision has you mulling all of the potential outcomes. Take a few breaths and some extra time to reevaluate your priorities in the next few days. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, beauty is everywhere if you just look for it. Pay attention to the little details that can show you the potential of others. You may be surprised at what you find. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, you are much more comfortable when surrounded by a close network of friends. Organize a get-together with your social circle. 0811
