EMC news - Ottawa police are warning residents to stay away from land north of the Beaver Pond, where a developer is cutting down trees on eight hectares of land. Police have received reports of joggers, cyclists and people out for a walk who are ignoring or bypassing no trespassing signs and fences to use a trail that runs between Kanata Lakes and Morgan’s Grant. “There’s a lot of access points and people going through,” said Const. Ryan Strotmann, who checked out the work site on Wednesday, Aug. 22. “Someone’s going to get hurt if they don’t pay attention. We saw foot traffic and bicycle traffic, people disobeying the signs.” TREE CUTTING

After more than a year’s delay, KNL Developments, a partnership between Urbandale and Richcraft Homes, received a permit from the Ministry of the Environment to resume work on clearing the land. The work is the first stage of a plan to build 400 single homes and townhouses. See WORK, page 3

Katimavik kids hold fundraiser ‘I felt like I needed to help the world’ Blair Edwards

EMC news - Nine-year-old Jasmine Quirk hopes to one day become a doctor and discover a cure for cancer. But she’ll have to wait about a decade before she can enroll in medical school. Until then, the Katimavik girl plans
to keep busy helping improve the world one charity fundraiser at a time. She started her career in philanthropy a few years ago by asking her parents to send donations to the Kanata Food Cupboard and CHEO in lieu of birthday gifts. This summer, Jasmine decided to expand her efforts and form a charity group
made up of 12 of her friends, ranging in age from five to 12, all children who live on Beaufort Drive and Brodeur Crescent in Katimavik. “I wanted to do more (fundraisers),” said Jasmine. “So I decided to do it by the Charity Group.” Jasmine and the group’s co-founder, Grace Dixon, 7, came up with the name during a play date and charity planning session in June.
