Beaverbrook gears up for 50th anniversary in 2015 One of the first 10 families remembers life in Kanata’s ‘instant community’ Adam Kveton
adam.kveton@metroland.com
It’s been 50 years since residents first moved to Beaverbrook, and Kanata’s founding community is preparing to celebrate the semi-centennial birthday in style.
Several events are already in the works with the Kanata Beaverbrook Community Association at the helm. The first will be a New Year’s Levee taking place on Jan. 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Beaverbrook Community Centre. Community leaders from

the association, Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson and Jean Teron, wife of Bill Teron who founded Beaverbrook, will be in attendance along with service providers to exchange greetings and memories with former and current residents. Photos and newspaper clippings depicting Beaverbrook’s history will be on display, loaned by one of the community’s first 10 families to move into the community: Ted and Dot Smale. They’ve lived in the same house they bought 50 years ago, and have been heavily involved in the community ever since. You had to be back then, they said, as there weren’t too many amenities and activities available in the community’s early years, especially for a family with young kids. Back then, there was confusion about just where Kanata was, and how you pronounced the name, they said.

Kanata councillors hope to make good on campaign promises in 2015 Crescent and the Fernbank community west of Terry Fox Drive and south of Hazeldean Road, developments that won’t be ready for a few years. Wilkinson also pointed to transit
and traffic as major themes for next year, saying she would advocate to improve transit in the ward. Traffic calming is also on Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley’s radar, saying he plans to continue working

As the year drew to a close, Kanata North and Kanata South’s councillors looked ahead, resolving to make good on projects in their wards such as traffic calming, transit and more. Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson said she wanted to make good on some key issues discussed during her 2014 campaign, including maintaining the characteristics of residents’ communities, “particularly when change is happening.” Change will continue to be a major part of the new year for both Kanata wards as communities continue to grow and preparations are made for thousands of new families to live in undeveloped urban boundary lands north of Windance
Hubley said he hopes collecting sap from sugar maples will be a hit with the community, and encourage residents to volunteer to produce maple syrup. He said he hopes to have the sugar bush up and ready for the 2016 winter season. “This will be a great way for the community to come together to celebrate the many treasures we have in Kanata South,” he said.

on traffic issues in the new year. “We have received great results from painting the speed limit on the roadways, as well as the traffic calming paddles,” said Hubley. “Expect to see more locations added this year, as well as emerging new initiatives.” But 2015 won’t just be about safety. Hubley said he plans to work on the community sugar bush planned for Monahan Landing, just south of Bridlewood. After securing the equipment,

A Sensitive & Engaging Approach to Those Needing Memory Care in OrlĂŠans or Kanata
Those with memory loss are often most comfortable in the “here and now, so the staff at Symphony Senior Living helps residents and their families live fully in the present and treasure each “moment. This approach minimizes confusion, agitation and frustration, hence the name “Moments for this program. At Symphony, staff take a highly personalized approach to each resident’s care and support. Each individual brings a unique set of experiences, abilities, preferences and needs. Lisa Brush, founder of Symphony Senior Living says “It’s important to gain a deep understanding of every resident’s background, so the focus is on what they can do, rather than what they cannot. The approach to wellness is proactive at Symphony residences offering Moments. Each resident receives a comprehensive assessment before joining the program. The wellness team customizes a care plan based upon a detailed health history which allows them to work closely with each resident. This enables staff to quickly identify even small changes in behavior or routine that may signal the need for an adjustment to their wellness strategy. This keeps residents stronger longer and crises at bay. Cutting-edge research indicates that proper nutrition, medication, physical and brain exercise, and routine health monitoring can dramatically influence residents’ daily abilities, quality of life and health. Some of the steps taken at Moments to slow down the effects of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias include:

Moments Manor OrlĂŠans, previously St. Joseph Villa until taken over by Symphony one year ago, is currently undergoing a complete building rejuvenation. The existing chapel is being restored to its former beauty and will become the centre point of the project. Each floor will have a separate comfortable and spacious living area including a resident kitchen & dining room, living room and lounge areas, resident and family laundry areas, a spa tub and accessible shower rooms. The new environment will be smaller and very homelike. This helps improve morale and increase comfort levels, so residents feel calmer and at ease. In addition, features like a hair salon, private dining room and secured outdoor areas with wandering paths and gardens are being added.

Toasting a city’s triumphs
T
he year 2014 was a time of transition for Ottawa, a time of triumphs, tragedy and growth. The city welcomed the opening of two long-awaited bridges, elected a new city council and provincial government, with the promise of a federal election soon to come. We looked on in horror, when a gunman murdered Cpl. Nathan Cirillo while he was standing guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Oct. 22. It was the year of the bridge, as south-end residents celebrated the opening of the Strandherd-Armstrong bridge, which was later named Vimy Memorial Bridge. The city also finally cut the ribbon to signal the completion of the Airport-Parkway pedestrian and cycling bridge, an over-budget project with several construction delays to the frustration of residents and south-end city councillors. In October, we elected a new city council, saying goodbye to a few long-term incumbents and welcoming a new group of councillors armed with a
fresh vision for Ottawa. It was a year of the return of the Canadian Football League, as sports fans cheered the Ottawa RedBlacks at a newly re-constructed stadium at Lansdowne Park. The National Arts Centre will receive a major facelift, courtesy of a $110-million investment from the federal government and the city approved plans for a new Arts Court, complete with an expanded Ottawa Art Gallery. Construction will continue this year, and the decade to come, on light rail tracks and the downtown tunnel, a system that promises to improve the commute from one end of the city to the other and eliminate some of the log jam on our highways. The city will also begin planning a new central library, hopefully a centrepiece for education fitting for a major municipality. This year, Ottawa will continue its transition from a hodgepodge of amalgamated communities into a truly great municipality. Join us in a toast to the “undiscovered country.

Humble predictions for 2015
I
t would be a pretty dreary holiday season if there were no predictions for the New Year in the newspapers. In fact, there would be nothing in the newspapers. In prefacing this year’s predictions, it is necessary to note that all of my last year’s ones turned out to be true, except for the Senators making the playoffs, the one about the Senate of Canada becoming useful and the one about no coyotes in Nepean. The big question for the new year, of course, will be when the demands begin for the Dave Cameron, new coach of the Ottawa Senators, to be fired. Usually, a new coach is given a grace period of at least three days. That period has elapsed. However, simple fairness suggests that critics will hold off until mid-January.
CHARLES GORDON Funny Town Meanwhile, discussions will continue about the possibility of moving the arena where the Senators play to LeBreton Flats. After the discussions have continued for a while, they will stop. This will be partly because of uncertainty over who would pay for the new arena, but mostly because the National Capital Commission will want to study it. It has been less than 60 years since LeBreton Flats became an empty field and the NCC doesn’t want to rush into things.

The building of the LRT tunnel and associated infrastructure will have a serious affect on downtown businesses. However, this will be mitigated somewhat by the fact that thousands of people will found themselves trapped downtown with no clear means of getting out. They will have to eat somewhere and downtown restaurants will thrive. Meanwhile, someone will discover that there is a part of the city that isn’t a construction zone. That’s the good news. The bad news is that there’s no place to park in it. Local school boards will allow trustees to speak to the media this year. the federal government will promise to name several more landmarks after Sir John A. Macdonald, bringing the total to 73. A highlight of the late fall will be the opening of the Sir John A. Macdonald Tanning Salon. With a federal election scheduled for October, the federal government will make several vote-catching announcements in Ottawa, including the opening of a new museum, the Museum of Mould. The Liberals will promise two new bridges over the Ottawa River, one to Gatineau and the other from. The NDP will promise transparency, but people will see right through that. Discussions about the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway will continue. The first part of the discussion will be people asking “Which one is that? Then there will be discussions about whether to put light rail on it, tunnel under it, build a bridge over it, privatize it or maybe put an arena
right in the middle of it. To celebrate the second Jim Watson mandate of the new millennium, Ottawa city council make no decisions whatsoever in 2015. Ottawans will hail this as the best city council ever. The snow will leave, eventually.

Senators Sports and Entertainment will submit a proposal to the National Capital Commission for the redevelopment of LeBreton Flats, the company confirmed on Dec. 23 via email. News the Senators’ ownership group was considering making a proposal to the NCC to relocate the arena from the Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata to LeBreton Flats surfaced on Dec. 10, with Senators’ owner Eugene Melnyk contemplating a possible move during a scrum on Dec. 15. “No comment other than the fact that, if we do qualify, then we will pursue a first class venue and beyond that we can’t really comment otherwise we disqualify ourselves,”
he said, when asked about a possible move. Asked what will become of the Canadian Tire Centre if the team moves to LeBreton Flats, Melnyk said “I haven’t even thought about that yet.” The Senators interest in moving has Kanata politicians and business leaders worrying about the impact it could have on the community. Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley said he is calling on the West Ottawa Board of Trade and the city’s economic development manager to analyse the economic situation and how best to fill the gap the Senators could leave behind. The worry is that businesses like restaurants and bars could be hit hardest, but Hubley said Kanata will be prepared to bolster its econo-
my and keep businesses running, perhaps with a new opportunity to develop the land around the Canadian Tire Centre. The NCC says it’s looking for a proposal that will “serve as an economic driver, feature innovative use of the land and bring design excellence, animation and a unique public experience to the nation’s capital.” The anchor institution would not have to be a public one, said Mark Kristmanson, chief executive officer of the NCC in May. If a move took place, both Wilkinson and mayor Jim Watson said they would not be willing to put up city funds to finance building the new arena. Files from Laura Mueller

Parents to blame for princess-obsessed toddlers
I
Week in Review Thank You! Happy New Year Kanata South! As we begin the New Year I am thankful for the tremendous support the community has shown me this past year and I am very optimistic for 2015 and all that is to come! My wish is for everyone to have a fantastic and prosperous 2015.
Coming up in 2015
Around the ward in 2015, we are looking to finalize the plans for commercial development for several locations along Eagleson and in the Kanata South Business Park. I am working closely with Councillor Qadri on development planned along Terry Fox Drive including the connecting of Abbott Street to Castlefrank. While this intersection does not yet meet provincial warrants for left turning signals, I have been very clear in my expectation that the signals will be included when these streets are connected. The detailed design phase of the Hunt Club to Hope Side Road project will be a high priority focus in 2015 and I look forward to working collaboratively with the NCC to ensure we protect the sensitive lands that border our community while providing capacity for the growth we know is coming. We will also see the completion of two new fitness parks in Kanata South that will be located at the Kanata Recreation Complex on Terry Fox Drive and the second at the Eva James Memorial Complex. There are signs posted at these locations now to provide more details about the fitness equipment. The new fitness stations will be added to the existing parks with installation being complete in the spring of 2015. Each location will have multiple fitness pieces that will offer new opportunities for residents to enjoy the best parks in our city. We will also be adding fitness pieces along our Monahan Trail in the next two years and other parks in the community as quickly as our fundraising efforts permit.
love it when children play make-believe. We have a chest of costumes in the basement that have been the source of many creative theatrics in our house. With boxes of beads and glue and paint and sparkles, our house is frequently cluttered with crafts in various stages of completeness. As for my son who’s been asking for drums for every gift-giving occasion for years – No way! – he finally gave up and made his own drum set, complete with cymbals. No real drum set can match the brass base from an old lamp, my oversized soup pot lid, some large coffee cans and various capacity storage bins. All children have the potential for limitless imaginings, which is why I don’t comprehend the so-called princessobsessed generation of girls. It’s so limiting. My daughter is 2.5-years-old. She is smack in the middle of the toddler demographic that
BRYNNA LESLIE Capital Muse was the subject of a New York Times column, which went viral in December: “How to turn your princess-obsessed toddler into a feminist in eight easy steps.” In the blog, author Devorah Blachor writes a list of eight fairy tale scenarios where little girls can be encouraged to think about the gender imbalance described. It’s very tongue-in-cheek, as the following sample demonstrates: “Wonder aloud, what with Cinderella’s history as a cleaner, if she and Prince Charming are likely to share the division of labor in their home. Remark that, if the immaculate state of his white gloves is anything to go by, it’s difficult to imagine that
he ever takes out the garbage.” I read through the column without cracking a smile. I read through various reactionary Tweets, Facebook posts and online comments with a frown. Parents moaned about their preschool-aged daughters’ complete and utter obsession with pink and princesses. Many asked for or offered advice on how to diminish the “inevitable” princess craze. It was frequently said there was nothing parents could do to deter a two-year-old girl from dressing, acting and eating like a princess. I was left in utter disbelief. First and foremost, I believe wholeheartedly that the
princess obsession is a cultural construct, which means it isn’t inevitable. Girls who are obsessed with pink and princesses have been exposed overwhelmingly to pink and princesses by the adults around them And while Blachor lays the fault on Brothers Grimm, I don’t buy this either. Toddlers are more likely to be on iPads or watching Disney than they are reading centuries-old fairy tales. So if your daughter refuses to wear anything but taffeta, you may want to take a closer look at what she’s watching. To propagate the idea that we, as parents, need to provide an antidote to princess culture in 2015 is disturbing, to say the least. If your child’s only exposure to morals and values is through the rose-coloured glasses of Cinderella-comeroyalty, you may want to reconsider discussions around the dinner table. Yes, parents, if your toddler is obsessed with princesses, like it or not, you are to blame. Just to throw you off, however, I don’t see anything wrong with little girls liking princesses, dressing up like them or acting like them. See DOLLS, page 13

SERVING KANATA NORTH
Continued from page 1
“People thought we lived half way to Toronto,” said Dot. The community spirit was easy to come by because the only way you would get things done was by volunteering your time, so that’s what they did, they said. There were no Scouts programs or Guides, no golf club or outdoor skating rinks. “If you wanted these activities for your kids, then you had to help put it into effect,” said Dot. You couldn’t just talk about what the community should have, said Ted. “If you were going to say something, you had to be prepared to back it up by being active,” he said. Bill Teron called the first families pioneers, and it was that pioneering spirit that brought the community together. But what had the Smales looking to join the new community at first was Teron’s pioneer discount. The first 10 families to buy a house got half of their down payment back: $3,500. “For the next 10 I think it was
City Councillor, Kanata North A NEW YEAR It’s a tradition to start each year afresh, putting aside any anxieties, problems and wishes from the past and looking forward to better things. None of us know what the New Year will bring, but we can dream of what we’d like to see. We can prepare our own individual and family collective “official plan” for 2015. It is then up to us to follow that plan, which we know is easier to write than to do. My commitment to the community is to ensure that you receive your city services efficiently; that your concerns are addressed wherever possible; that you are kept informed on matters that could impact you or your community; and that Kanata North retains its character, where development and nature thrive together.
BEAVERBROOK IS FIFTY! We often think of communities outside the Greenbelt as new places. Yet in 2015, it will be 50 years since the first residents moved into homes in the new Garden City. This was the first community built by Bill Teron, and he built it on 3,000 acres where not even a tiny hamlet existed. It was considered to be so distant from then Ottawa that the first homeowners received pioneer discounts. Some of the original ten owners still live in their original homes in Beaverbrook. Teron’s plan for a city of 60,000, including the town centre and business park which were part of the original vision for Kanata, is now about 120,000 and growing due to amalgamation and increasing lands within the urban boundary. This year, as Beaverbrook celebrates its 50th anniversary, I am undertaking a challenge to document in words and pictures, the stories about how we got to where we are today. I’m going document and share some that I was a part of – from finding Kanata in 1968, to the issues of today. These will include how we got the province to move the Trans Canada Highway to March road as opposed to Teron Road; how we obtained a pedestrian overpass over the 417; the 40% Open Space Agreement; the energy conserving community in Morgan’s Grant; how the Kanata North Business Park came to be; why we have the Centrum and not the award winning town centre originally planned; cows in Beaverbrook; why the amalgamation to form Kanata nearly failed; building the Palladium and more.
$3,000 and it gradually dropped down,” said Ted. “That was actual money in those days,” he said. “That was big bucks.” In 1965, the Smales and their four young children, had outgrown their bungalow in Carlingwood and were in the market for a new house in the city’s west end. Ted, who worked two jobs, one at Atomic Energy Canada Commercial Products (now Nordion), and the other as a defensive end for the Ottawa Rough Riders, found out about this place called “Canata’ or “Kinata” from a teammate. Teron was giving money away to move there, he was told. “But it’s way the hell out by Bells Corners,” Ted recalls his teammate saying. That didn’t scare the family. At the time, Atomic Energy Canada was moving out to Kanata as well, making the move a good one for the family. But Teron’s vision for Beaverbrook was another major selling point, said the Smales. The idea was to create a selfcontained community that takes

These stories impact on all of Kanata North as it exists today, so I’m challenging other residents to tell their stories – whether from 50 years ago or last year. Send them to me and at the end of the year they will be compiled and possibly printed in book form, and become part of the collection in the Kanata Room at the Beaverbrook Library. Frequently social history that tells about families and communities is lost. We have a rich history in our community, please help me to document it - so future generations can better understand how rocky fields became a thriving community.

advantage of its own geography with parks and trees and Canadian Shield rock, and has schools and facilities that people need. Of course, it wasn’t all there when the Smales arrived in August of 1965. To get out to Kanata, you left the paved roads behind at Eagleson Road, they said, until you came upon some pavement near Leacock Way, where the first houses in Beaverbrook were constructed. There was already a school, while the community centre housed a barber shop and mailboxes, all supported by volunteers. It quickly became a community hub. “You would go down and next thing you know you have spent a couple of hours talking to people,” said Ted. One of the first things residents started was a babysitting club, said Dot. No one had any money to pay for it, so they banded together and took care of each other’s children. The way the community was built meant kids had a great opportunity to bike through trails from one end of Beaver-

brook to the other, with parks “sprinkled” throughout, she said. That was the beauty of Teron’s design for the community, said Dot. “He just made it so walkable,” she said. Beaverbrook residents organized and ran Guideing and Scouts groups and maintained outdoor skating rinks. Dot was a strong supporter and volunteer with the Kanata Beaverbrook Community Association, while Ted became a trustee with the public school board, helping to put in W. Erskine Johnston Public School and Roland Michener Public School. Ted laments the way schools are put in now, well after the community is in need of them, leaving many students in portables with an overburdened staff. The arrival of the Queensway shows that not everything according to plan in the community. “Bill was saying that it was going to be here in ’68,” said Ted. He recalls seeing the sign hailing the expected arrival changing year to year, putting it off until the ’70s. But all of the “less than satisfactory” things the family lived through, as well as some of the ways the community has changed over the years all comes out in the wash, leaving the Smales with many happy memories to celebrate in 2015, they said. “I still think Kanata is the best place to live,” said Ted. “It’s just been great.” With 50 years gone, the community continues to go strong, they said, with new families interested in coming to Beaverbrook. The upcoming celebrations will provide opportunities for sharing stories and meeting some of those new families. Apart from the levee on Jan. 4 which will include a family movie called Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates, and refreshments, the Kanata Beaverbrook Community Association is preparing a week-long winter carnival on the Stephen Leacock and Roland Michener schools’ outdoor rinks from Feb. 8 to 16. The carnival will have daily family skating, a snowman competition and a March Kanata Skating Club performance. A 50th anniversary Mayfair celebration is also in the works to be held the end of May, and will include a children’s bicycle parade with prizes for the best decorated bike.
2014: the year in review The start of programing at the Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice and the merger of the West Ottawa Board of Trade and the Greater Nepean Chamber of Commerce were just a few of the important news items in Kanata in 2014. to Disney – mainly because she doesn’t yet have a relationship with the latter. She’s got princesses, but she’s also got farm animals and Lego (not “girl Lego”) and a collection of dresses and jeans in a wide range of colours.

n anonymous man gave a surprise donation of $128,000 in July to a single Kanata mom to undergo the aggressive surgery that could save her life. “This was a God-given miracle,” said Stephanie Headley. “My life will literally be saved.” Headley was diagnosed with systematic scleroderma in 2001, an autoimmune disease that, in lay-
Parenting is ultimately a vanity exercise – I don’t want my kids to be like me; I want them to be better than like me. I want my daughter to know that feminism comes in many shades, just like her toys, books and dresses. Princesses are okay as part of her creative process. But princess obsessed? Not in my castle.

plan to build a retirement home next to an apartment building in Beaverbrook was expected to allow its ageing residents to remain independent for as long as possible, said a Ka-
nata developer. “What we have conceptualized here is a retirement community where people can age in place,” said Paul Taggart, president of The Taggart Group’s realty management. The project came to community members’ attention once again during a public meeting on July 16, offering
a last look at the 100 Varley Ln. proposal before a zoning amendment for the property is considered at city hall.

It seems hard to believe that the holiday season is before us again. I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. 2014 has been a year that we won’t soon forget. I was truly honoured and humbled to receive a very strong mandate from the people of Ottawa during the municipal elections. As we finish a highly successful and collaborative term of Council, I look forward to working with both new and returning Council colleagues preparing for some important accomplishments and projects in the coming years. $URING THE NEXT TERM OF #OUNCIL WE WILL SEE THE completion of the Confederation Line LRT, our single largest infrastructure project since the construction of the Rideau Canal. We will also be celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017. Working with a dedicated group of community leaders, we have begun planning a yearlong celebration that will allow us to showcase our beautiful city. It will also help to further build our reputation as a premier destination for visitors from across Canada and around the world. You will see more and more of our 2017 logo – a maple leaf made up of 13 triangles – representing our 13 provinces and territories. Check out our website www.ottawa2017.ca to find out how you can contribute your ideas for this important milestone. /VER THE COURSE OF THE NEXT FOUR YEARS WE ARE ALSO ON TRACK TO EXPAND AND OPEN A REVITALIZED /TTAWA !RT Gallery and Arts Court, as well as our new Innovation Hub at Bayview Yards – at the intersection where the Confederation and Trillium (current O-Train) lines come together. I hope you can take some time over the holidays to come and enjoy the SENS RINK of Dreams at City Hall, or our new refrigerated outdoor rink at Lansdowne Park. Most of all, enjoy some quality time with your friends and family at this wonderful time of year.

he Kanata North Business Park juggernaut was delcared back on track by the Kanata North Business Improvement Area’s board at the organization’s annual general meeting on Nov. 26. But the area hasn’t been tooting its own horn loud enough, said various members. The business group intended to change that with a new campaign aimed at attracting more businesses to the area and publicizing the resurgence of Kanata’s high-tech sector. A new video was unveiled to the BIA’s membership during the meeting at The Marshes Golf Club, meant to catch the eye of businesses and young talent, and spur them to consider moving to Kanata.
A
fter a year-long process, the membership of the West Ottawa Board of Trade and the Greater Nepean Chamber of Commerce voted unanimously to merge their two organizations on Dec. 8. The decision brought together nearly 600 businesses from Nepean, Kanata, Goulbourn and West Carleton, now represented by a single entity, which should result in a stronger lobbying voice and more exposure for members.
C
anada Post received a poor grade from the Kanata Beaverbrook Association in a report card rating the crown corporation’s introduction of new community mailboxes in Kanata. The association awarded Canada Post a ‘D’, saying the biggest flaw in the process was the company’s lack of com-
munication with community groups and the city.
T
he Ottawa Senators interest in moving the team’s arena to LeBreton Flats had Kanata politicians and business leaders hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley had already called on the West Ottawa Board of Trade and the city’s economic development manager to undertake “some high-level analysis on what the impacts would be and what some of the options are” to reduce the blow to Kanata’s business community. Any move to LeBreton Flats, which is National Capital Commission land, would take 10 years or more, said Hubley and that could happen only if the Senators decide to put forth a proposal to the
National Capital Commission by Jan. 7, and the Crown corporation judges it to be the best choice.

wen Prince, a 25-year resident of Kanata, was recognized by the city of Ottawa with
a plaque unveiling on Dec. 11 in recognition of his service to the community. Prince spent 17 of those 25 years working to convince the former city of Kanata that the community needed a seniors’ centre, the creation of which was perhaps the biggest
reason for the plaque. “It’s not often you get a politician to say nice things about you when you push,” said Prince with a laugh after an introduction from Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson

Superstitions on New Year’s day
A
s far as Father was concerned the whole idea was pure
nonsense. Imagine: not letting anyone through the door of the house on New Year’s day until somebody entered who was fair of hair, and preferably fair of skin. But Mother was adamant. She had talked about it so much, that I was sure if a black haired neighbour came knocking, he would be left standing in the cold until, as Father said, “hell froze over. And so, I silently prayed that Uncle Alec would come across the 20 acre
MARY COOK Mary Cook’s Memories field that New Year’s day before anyone with black hair made a call. His fair hair was streaked with silver, and I was sure he would be welcomed in as our first visitor of the new year. But that was unlikely. It had been snowing for three days, and everyone on the Northcote Side road was pretty well stuck in their own homes.
Now, the reason Mother said it was of the utmost importance that someone fair of head be the first through the door on New Year’s day, was that she knew for a fact if our first visitor was one with black hair it was a sure sign that the entire year ahead would be one of doom, gloom, and very likely send all of us to the poor house. But if someone
with fair hair and skin was the first through the door, then the coming year would be one of prosperity and good health. And that is the reason that year, when New Year’s eve came and passed, and no visitor had come to call, at the crack of dawn on New Year’s day, Mother climbed the stairs, clomped by Audrey’s and my bed in her home-made felt slippers, on her way to the back bedroom, and shook Everett from a deep sleep. Even Father had yet to climb out of bed, it was so early. See IT FELT, page 21

It felt like the middle of the night Continued from page 18
“Everett, you have to get dressed and go outside and come back in before your Father sets out for the barns,” she said in a loud whisper that could be heard through the entire upstairs. Everett was the only one in the family as fair as a lily, with a swatch of blond hair, poker straight, but at least it wasn’t black or red like the rest of us in the family. Poor Everett. He knew exactly what he had to do. By this time Father was up and dressed, and Mother’s next challenge was to make sure if he went to the barns, he wouldn’t set foot in the house before Everett, because his black hair was sure to send us all into the poor house, and we’d become afflicted with goodness knows any number of ailments during the coming year. Everett still full of sleep, crawled into his overalls,
pulled on his socks, and headed for the kitchen. I followed him downstairs, and he looked for all the world like he was about to fall over, still only half awake. He didn’t even bother to put on his coat or hat, just slammed his feet into his gumrubbers, opened the back door, stepped out onto the snow covered stoop, turned around and walked right back into the kitchen, shucked off his boots and headed back upstairs. It certainly looked like it wasn’t the first time he had done the job. With daylight just starting to creep in, the kitchen had an eerie glow, and to me it seemed like the middle of the night. I sat in the rocking chair by the stove, where Father sat to read the Ottawa Farm Journal, as I tried to warm up in the still ice-cold house. I heard Father stomping his feet on the outside step, and saw him slowly open the kitchen door, looking down at
BEFORE
Everett’s footsteps in the snow. Figuring it was safe to come in, he shook his head, as if to say, “well, that’s over for another year.” The new year’s ritual wasn’t the only one of Mother’s concerns when it came to signs and omens, such as a toss of salt over her left shoulder if some was spilled from the shaker, a dropped dishcloth stayed on the floor until someone other than the person who dropped it picked it up. It was often hard for me, at such a young age to tell if something was a good or a bad sign. All I know is that, regardless of the signs or omens Mother believed in, and which Father said were the craziest notions he ever heard of, none of them did much to ease the hardships of those Depression years all around us out in Renfrew County. May I take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you God’s richest blessing for the coming year.

Spicy sausage, lentil winter salad a great winter side Lentils are rich in dietary fibre and go beautifully with the crunchy texture of the home grown apple and cabbage. Caraway seeds add an unexpected twist to the apple cider dressing. Preparation time: 15 minutes. Cooking time: 20 minutes. Serves six to eight. Ingredients
• 175 ml (3/4 cup) dried green lentils • 10 ml (2 tsp) olive oil • 250 g (8 oz) hot or sweet Italian sausages, sliced into bite-size pieces • 750 ml (3 cups) shredded green cabbage • 1 small carrot, coarsely grated Dressing • 45 ml (3 tbsp) cider vinegar • 45 ml (3 tbsp) olive oil • 7 ml (1-1/2 tsp) caraway seeds
• 1 clove garlic, minced • 1 ml (1/4 tsp) each salt and pepper • 1 unpeeled apple, cut into very thin wedges • 50 ml (1/4 cup) chopped fresh dill Preparation
Bring a medium pot of water to boil. Look through the lentils to remove any debris
and then rinse them. Add the lentils to the water. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, until the lentils are tender but not mushy – about 18 to 20 minutes. Drain very well. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, heat the oil over mediumhigh heat. Add the sausage and cook, stirring occasionally, until cooked through, about seven minutes. Remove the sausage with a slotted spoon into a serving bowl. Add the cabbage, carrot and lentils. For the dressing, whisk together the vinegar, oil, caraway seeds, garlic, salt and pepper In a small bowl. Pour the dressing over the lentil mixture and toss. Let everything cool to room temperature and then toss with the apple and dill. Foodland Ontario

City to look at bringing back meeting minutes Laura Mueller
laura.mueller@metroland.com
Coun. Keith Egli is concerned that eliminating full-text records of discussions at city council and committee meetings is making it more difficult for residents to be active in civic life. In 2011, Egli was one of several councillors who voted against a move to eliminate what are called “synopsis minutes – detailed accounts of the presentations, delegations, discussion and voting record for items on city committee
and council agendas. City council axed the written records anyways and instead chose to keep audio recordings of the meetings. Now, Egli wants to know how much it would cost to have the detailed written accounts resurrected. “We want people to participate in local government, Egli said. “One of the ways we can do that is to track what is said, what the votes are in an easy format. The concerns he has heard from the public aren’t about a lack of transparency, Egli said, but rather about making it easier for residents to stay engaged and follow along with issues that affect them. When the detailed minutes were axed in 2011, councillors like Egli pointed out that it takes longer to listen through an audio recording than it would to perform a simple text search for a relevant word. Egli said he heard some con-
cerns about the change in 2011 and those concerns were still an issue on the campaign trail during the municipal election this fall, so he submitted an inquiry to have staff review the matter before April of 2015. Barrhaven Coun. Jan Harder, the new chairwoman of the planning committee, suggested staff also look at any improvements that could be made to make the audio
archive system more user-friendly. “People said ‘I am more comfortable sitting down and flipping through pages,’ Egli said. The potential cost of bringing back written minutes is a concern, Egli said.
Eliminating meeting summaries was estimated to save about $170,000 each year, mostly due to the reduction in staff time needed to prepare the meeting minutes. See CITY, page 34

South Keys Loblaws cashier Julie Kerslake is helped out by Ryan Racicot, 11, a player with the Southend Superstars peewee B hockey team at the grocery store on Dec. 20. The young Superstars and the girls’ Russell-Embrun Coyotes team bagged groceries for shoppers, an initiative that generated more than $2,800 in donations for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Support shown to the team during a similar fundraising initiative in late November impressed the players so much that they wanted to bag groceries for a second weekend to further support the community.

Man in wheelchair struck in Barrhaven while crossing road Alex Robinson alex.robinson@metroland.com
An unidentified man in his 50’s has died after a car hit him while he was trying to cross the street in Barrhaven the morning of Dec. 19, Ot-
O-Train Extension to Riverside South and the Ottawa MacDonald-Cartier International Airport Environmental Assessment Study Open House
tawa police said. The car had been traveling in the southbound lane of Woodroffe Avenue near Deerfox Drive just before 11 a.m. when it collided with the man, who was in an electric wheel chair, according to police.
The man was sent to hospital in critical condition and later died. The accident blocked off traffic well into that afternoon as police conducted an investigation into the crash.
The City of Ottawa has initiated an Environmental Assessment Study to develop an approved plan to extend the City’s existing diesel-powered O-Train service from Greenboro Station to Riverside South (Bowesville Road), as well as a branch line to the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport and new or relocated stations at Gladstone Avenue, Confederation Heights and Walkley Road. You are invited to attend one of the following sessions: Thursday, January 15, 2015 6 to 8 p.m. (presentation at 7 p.m.) St. Anthony’s Banquet Hall 523 St. Anthony Street (at Preston) OC Transpo routes 14, 85 and the O-Train Free parking is available
The study is being undertaken in accordance with the transit project assessment process as prescribed in Ontario Regulation 231/08, Transit Projects. The primary study area includes the existing O-Train corridor between Bayview and Greenboro Stations, the current Walkley Yard maintenance and storage facility, and the proposed southern extension from Greenboro Station to Riverside South (Bowesville Road) and the Ottawa International Airport. The plan will include options to serve the growing communities of Riverside South and Leitrim, the Airport and adjacent lands, as well as new or relocated stations at Gladstone Avenue, Confederation Heights and Walkley Road on the existing O-Train line. The plan also allows for a future conversion to electric light rail transit (LRT) technology. The O-Train extension is one of three environmental assessment studies underway as part of Stage 2, the City’s plan to extend the benefits of rail to residents further east, west and south that will add 19 new stations and 35 kilometres to our LRT network. Accessibility is an important consideration for the City of Ottawa. If you require special accommodation, please call 3-1-1 or e-mail the project lead below before the event.

When the change was made in 2011, the clerk’s office told council that adding audio records would cost $25,900 a year in IT staff time and storage costs – a reduction of $144,100 from the written format. The city also spent an extra $69,500 to upgrade the audio systems in council chambers and the Champlain Room, where committee meetings are held. In 2011, city staff also reviewed the possibility of using voice-to-text software to provide a rough written “translation” of the audio recording, which would not have been considered official minutes. There is no legal requirement for the city to provide a detailed synopsis of a discussion at a meeting in addition to the action minutes. However, the city would still provide written transcriptions of the File audio of a meeting if requested due to Knoxdale-Merivale Coun. Keith Egli wants to city to review the cost of bringing accessibility concerns such as a hearing back detailed written minutes in addition to the audio and video records the city impairment. switched to in 2011.

Community hosts fundraiser for injured Smiths Falls player Alex Robinson
alex.robinson@metroland.com
The Ottawa hockey community has joined the fight to help Neil Doef, a teen from Smiths Falls who suffered a serious injury in a World Junior A game last week. A group of Ottawa-based hockey players and parents held a fundraising game at the Richcraft Sensplex in Gloucester on Dec. 22. Players from the Ontario Hockey League, National Collegiate Athletic Association and Central Canada Hockey League played in the game and a crowd of friends and family attended the event, which raised more than $6,600 for the Doef family.
“I just want them to know all of Ottawa is behind them,” said Kevin Tansey, who plays for Clarkson University and was one of the event’s organizers. “The outreach I’ve gotten in the last four days has been amazing.” Doef, 17, went head-first into the boards after he was hit by a Swiss defenceman while he was playing for Canada East in the World Junior A Challenge in Saskatoon.
He underwent surgery last week and was resting comfortably afterwards with his parents, Bruce and BobbiJean, who flew out to be with him. Doef, who was a star player for the Smiths Falls Bears, was among the CCHL’s top scorers this year. He had committed to playing for Princeton University. Doef’s struggle hit Tansey personally, as he had missed a whole season of
hockey after he was assaulted downtown three years ago. He suffered a dislocated shoulder, broken ribs and a concussion. Tansey had originally booked ice time at the Sensplex to play shinny with his friends over the holidays. But when he heard about Doef’s injury he immediately started contacting other players to put on a charity game, and the effort snowballed from there.
Hockey parents from Smiths Falls, who launched a fundraising campaign called Doef Strong, attended the game to show their support and help collect donations for the Doefs. “The support has been unbelievable,” said Pat Morell, one of the parents involved in the effort. With files from Laurie Weir
