First mayoral debate heats up Bridlewood Watson roasted for being absent JESSICA CUNHA KOURIER-STANDARD There was a notable absence during the all-candidates mayoral debate held at the Eva James Memorial Community Centre in Bridlewood on Monday, May 17. Dubbed the front-runner in the campaign by some observers, Jim Watson was a no-show. The six candidates who did attend, criticized his absence. Charlie Taylor, a Carleton journalism student, asked the other mayoral hopefuls to join him in writing a letter to Watson asking him to attend all future all-candidates debates. Watson said he wasn’t attending because he had agreed to go to a Polish community event; but he also said he didn’t think it was right to hold an allcandidates meeting before registration closes on Sept. 10. If Watson waits until then to attend debates that leaves only 30 working days, said mayoral candidate and Bay Coun. Alex Cullen.
“This has been called a one-horse race,” said Taylor. “And that horse didn’t bother to show up tonight.” Many topics were broached during the debate, which was hosted by the Bridlewood Community Association, but the dominant two were transit and taxation. TRANSIT The issue of light rail and the proposed downtown tunnel were front and centre. “Light rail has to die,” said candidate Stan Pioro, who is against raising taxes and spending millions on what he calls non-essential projects. “The huge mega projects have to be stopped.” Mayoral hopeful Mike Maguire, who was the chief policy analyst for candidate Terry Kilrea in 2006, said he thinks “light rail is an inappropriate expenditure.” Maguire proposed an alternative modelled on the GO Train in Toronto that would use existing rail. Cullen attacked Watson for his stance on light rail. “The biggest issue is to provide more services,” he said. “It’s the beginning of a larger plan for light rail. But Mr. Watson suggests to drop the downtown tunnel.” Candidate Sean Ryan said he had a “watershed moment” during the bus strike and wants to fix the transit problem, which includes adding light-rail transit. “It would take buses off the road downtown and I would push them out here (to the suburbs),” he said. “Light rail is one of those projects that will save money,” said Taylor, who added he would like to see OC Transpo privatized, as well as see employees’ salaries cut. TAXES Cullen said its “impossible” to balance the
budget without increasing taxes or cutting services. “Your taxes pay for services,” he said. Taylor agreed, saying Mayor Larry O’Brien’s slogan in the last election of “zero means zero” taught residents that a tax freeze is not possible, and instead his goal is to “keep the tax increase below inflation.” However, Pioro disagreed, saying, “anyone who says tax increases are inevitable is insane and isn’t trying hard enough. We need a rollback; it has to be like Wal-Mart – we have to start cutting taxes.” Candidate Jane Scharf said an overhaul of city hall is needed. “I think if we get the old boys’ hands out of the cookie jar we’d have more resources available,” she said. “We should be demanding a cost-benefit analysis.” Over 70 people attended the all-candidates meeting.

Tempers boiled over at a ward council meeting in North Kanata on May 17. Two hotly debated issues were at the forefront of the meeting – the extension of Terry Fox Drive and the burial of several hydro lines on Kanata Avenue. Councillor Marianne Wilkinson made presentations on both issues with, project manager, Steve Stoddard also speaking about Terry Fox Drive. Wilkinson said she understands opposition to Terry Fox project, but assured the people in attendance that there are few options. “Anyone can go and talk to OMB but right now intervention can only happen from a provincial level,” said Wilkinson. Wilkinson outlined a map of the area that will be affected, singling out several areas that will not be harmed
by the construction of the road extension. “The Trillium Woods area will be saved,” said Wilkin-

All Saints Catholic High School students brought in the big gun during their campaign to raise awareness about mental health issues; Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson. Kay-lee Welch, Samantha Paul, Amica Ferras and Blake Scott contacted Alfredsson through the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre using a video cleverly titled, “We know who you are, but do you know who we are?” Alfredsson addressed the grades 10 and 11s during a school assembly to raise awareness about mental illness on Thursday, May 13. “It’s something you have to discuss,” said Alfredsson. “Too many kids suffer in silence.” Scott said the focus of the campaign was how to help a friend in need. Alfredsson has been labeled as a champion for mental health; his sister, Cecilia, who lives

in Sweden, was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder around 10 years ago. Alfredsson told the students when his sister was first diagnosed, he didn’t know how to help her because he didn’t understand what was happening. He joined the Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health’s “you know who I am” campaign, as a way to demonstrate his love for his sister. “Help me and eliminate the stigma,” he said.

McGuinty’s faulty prescription Imagine you’re sick and need some medication. It’s become less expensive, so you can afford a hamburger on the way there. You enjoy the burger and head over to the pharmacy that you have been going to for years. One problem: the pharmacy is closed. So you come back the next day when they’re open and ask for a pharmacist who can guide you to find the proper medication you need. Another problem: his hours were cut, so he’s off for the day. Wouldn’t you be slightly miffed? Now, think back to that hamburger you had for the couple of extra bucks you are now saving off your medication. Do you still want that hamburger or would you rather have the staff and services of a pharmacy? The choice does not even exist because McGuinty has spoken and you have to eat that hamburger. That is what citizens all across Ontario are facing now, in light of Dalton McGuinty’s new bill. In the latest of McGuinty’s “good in theory, terrible in execution” ideas, the pharmaceutical industry will stop receiving $750 million a year in subsidies and will be forced to cut hours, staff, and in some cases, close locations. McGuinty swears up and down that this is what the people want. Everyone wants cheaper drugs, he says, but the question is, do those people want to have the same access to services that they do now? The bottom line – with McGuinty’s bill you’ll save a few dollars but your local pharmacist will not be able to provide personalized consultations, extra staffing and may even have to charge for delivery. Do you consider this a fair trade-off? Now imagine your child is violently ill and you rush them to the hospital only to wait for hours before being seen because all the doctors are too busy answering questions that pharmacists could be answering. Thanks Dalton!

Preparing young drivers for the road
COMMENT
Red light cameras create bad drivers So, if safety isn’t the reason...you’re right, it IS the revenue. But there is a bigger problem – a driver, knowing that there is a red light camera at an intersection, defocuses from the traffic around them, concentrates solely on whether the light is going to change, and if it does change to caution, actually accelerates through the intersection to avoid a sizable ticket. I’ve been caught at March and Campeau, it was a February evening, raining, having passed northbound over the 417 bridge was approaching Campeau, downhill and my dash display indicated the temperature as -1 C. The intersection is very wide and there was no way I was going to slam on the brakes or accelerate through the intersection to avoid a ticket. Flashes popped off seemingly everywhere from cameras and nailing half a dozen cars heading in both directions in multiple lanes who had the commonsense not to do what the city required and we were all had by the City of Ottawa to the tune of a one or two thousand dollars in a fraction of a second. Now, I have not made a study of it, but this intersection is wide enough and the yel-

low light brief enough, I suspect the city catches at least one and probably more with EVERY light change every day of the year, good weather or bad road conditions, and every day those cars are going to go through faster and faster as more and more locals are caught or become aware of The Trap – just human nature. Taking your eyes off the road, staring at flashing ‘don’t walk’ signs trying to get a hint of when the intersection will go yellow, slowing down inexplicably in anticipation of a caution light or speeding up through an intersection are not exactly hallmarks of great drivers, but that is exactly what the city is encouraging through these revenue generating methods. They accomplish nothing else and are actually very dangerous and solidify bad driving habits. Clearly, in the absence of any proof that these cameras reduce accidents and compelling commonsense evidence that they actually are dangerous, the city should reconsider their further deployment. Our 17-year-old just received his G2 driver’s license which enables him to drive independent of a licensed driver in the car. Does this necessarily make him a good driver? Years of experience may or may not prepare a veteran driver for an unexpected occurrence but what prepares a young driver full of pride at having attained this level of independence? As parents, we can only instill in our children the importance of obeying the rules of the road and following all they were taught in their driver’s education classes. Trusting whether or not they listen is another matter for far too often we are witness to yet another young driver thinking mortality applies to everyone else. The day he received his G2 and first time he took our car solo, I closed my eyes and said a prayer that he would come back in one piece. The next morning, before I left for the office, I kissed him goodbye and swallowed hard. Perhaps the nervousness will ease with each passing day as he gains that vital experience necessary to qualify him as an “experienced driver,” but then again, perhaps not. Donna Mulvihill Kanata

Schacter explained what it’s like to grow up with OCD; how she would miss classes because if she stepped on a crack on her way to the classroom, she would have to go back to her locker and start the process again. “I was so stuck doing rituals,” she said. Her parents decided to talk to her class and explain what was happening. Schacter said she was amazed at how many people stepped up to help her out – including getting piggy backs to class so she wouldn’t have to walk on the floor. “Everybody here knows someone,” said Schacter. “It affects everyone in this room.” One in five people will experience some variation of mental illness in their lifetime. The goal of the “you know who I am” campaign is to erase the stigma attached to mental illness and to help people seek treatment if they are at risk.

Wilkinson proposed a special services levy that would require residents to pay, on average, $18 a year per household in order to shoulder the cost. “What I’d like to do is change the policy,” said Wilkinson. “However, there isn’t much we could do outside of this special services levy.” The overhead lines caused a stir among Kanata Avenue residents with complaints ranging from the safety of children to the aesthetics of the area. “All 10 of us voted for this levy,” said Gordon Henderson, the president of the Beaverbrook Community Association. “What we want to do is to fund this and bury these lines.”
Wilkinson. “It may only be one piece of the road but we should all get together and help.” Barristers and Solicitors After much debate, the final word went to Bill Teron, known as “the Fawww.rickassociates.com ther of Kanata,” who was staunch in his W. While there was strong support for the levy there was some sharp opposition as well, particularly from residents in the Morgan’s Grant area of Kanata. “What she calls the last resort should be no resort at all,” said Matt Muirhead, the president of the Briarbrook Morgan’s Grant Community Association. “I’m very sympathetic to their cause but this sets a bad precedent. Taxpayers will soon be paying for other roads and other segments if this goes through.” Wilkinson maintained her stance that this is necessary and promised to help lower-income families in the area pay their share through fundraisers and other money-collecting ventures. “As a community, we’ve always supported the entire community,” said

Pharmacists across the province are not happy. The pharmaceutical industry in Ontario will lose $750 million in subsidies thanks to a new bill put forward by Dalton McGuinty. McGuinty is offering $150 million worth of funding to balance out some of the lost money although he has made it clear that his goal is cheaper drugs rather than the health of the pharmaceutical industry. Additionally McGuinty has pledged to set aside funds to help smaller pharmacies with the transition, local pharmacists are not backing down their staunch opposition to the funding cuts. “They’re underfunding our economic model that we’ve had for 30 years, said Wayne Law, pharmacist and owner of Kanata Pharmasave. “There’s going to be a lot of close analysis of how we can function with the cuts the government is imposing. I think there’s going to be a lot of reduction in health care services. All pharmacies will be hurt by the cuts, including big budget retailers such as Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall however the most impact will be felt by independently owned pharmacies.
“It’s going to be pretty devastating to smaller pharmacies,â€? said Amish Patel, a pharmacist at HMA Pharmacy in Nepean. “People may start having to pay for services they didn’t pay for before and the service level itself may drop.â€? The divide between pharmacists and the government has spread to the point that protests are being held in opposition of the changes and petitions have been created in many pharmacies. If the changes become a reality, it will make life difďŹ cult for local citizens. “The other day, one of our regular customers came in and was confused about how her medication should be taken and I sat with her for 15 minutes and sorted everything out,â€? said Law. “I don’t think you’ll get that access anymore. Unfortunately, pharmacists won’t be able to spend that time with patients anymore.â€? With the cutbacks, hospital emergency room wait times could become much longer. “With the inability to see pharmacists, more people will contact the ER about issues that pharmacies can usually handle,â€? said Law. “So I don’t see how it’s saving money when the ER will be ooded.â€? pdukarsky@metroland.com

‘We do own to the shoreline,’ resident of Lane Street hopes the partying will stop DEREK DUNN KOURIER-STANDARD After many years of pleading with police and the municipality, waterfront homeowners along the street next to The Point Restaurant will have their property rights protected. Joyce Nightingale has been a part of the campaign of some 11 homeowners on Lane Street to have the beach unequivocally declared private property. She said she hopes it will mean hordes of beachgoers from outside the community will no longer descend on the sandy beach. “We just heard today (Monday), we do own to the shoreline,” Nightingale said. “Police are now going to lay trespassing charges, drinking charges and the rest.” The residents are planning a photo opportunity for media on Saturday morning when the first of some 17 private property signs will be erected along the street and near the beach entrance at the end of Bishop Davis Drive. An educational awareness campaign is also in the works.

According to Rapoch, the problem many have moved from the west side of the Bishop Davis Drive entrance to the east, since the city’s opinion only applies to Lane Street residents. Kerry Bourgaize, and assistant to West Carleton-March Coun. Eli El-Chantiry, confirmed the possibility of the problem arising again. He said when Fred Baldwin put the neighbourhood up for development in the early half of the last century, he had plan 412 when the Lane Street homes were zoned as private property. But the plan 410 area to the east is considered public. Either way, Nightingale is claiming a small victory. “I’m not an activist, but I do believe people do have some respect. I don’t spend my life protesting, I’m not crazy,” she said. “If I really don’t believe in something, I don’t sit there and do nothing.” derek.dunn@metroland.com

‘I feel like the luckiest person in the world’ Allison Leslie, founder of 10k is the Way, raises funds to fight cystic fibrosis JESSICA CUNHA KOURIER-STANDARD Allison Leslie, at 18 years of age, has accomplished a lot, including founding 10K is the Way, an annual walk dedicated to raising funds for the fight against cystic fibrosis. Her motivation is seven-yearold Kaelie Coombe, who was diagnosed with the disease, which attacks a person’s respiratory and digestive systems. “I met her when she was about four and I have to say she’s one of my biggest inspirations for doing this,” said Leslie. “She is my angel. When no nurse could get me out of bed at CHEO she could do it every time; just hearing her voice. “We’re still in touch all the time for holidays and sleepovers. She’s seven and she’s already been through so much, so many hospitalizations; one of her lungs collapsed soon after she was born. KATIE MACNAMARA AND GABRIELLE DOUCET CANTERBURY HIGH SCHOOL
VERONICA SCHLEIHAUF PHOTO
The graduating drama class of Canterbury High School has been given the rare opportunity to perform at the world renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland this August. Organized through the American High School Theater Festival (AHSTF), a program which had 2,400 applicants this year, Canterbury was one of 60 North American schools chosen, and one of only eight from Canada. The drama class will be performing their original movement piece, The Neon Bible Project, a production based around the music of popular indie rock band Arcade Fire, with special rights to the music granted graciously by the band. Canterbury contacted the band through Canterbury alumni Richard Parry, who plays multiple instruments in the band. Director Paul Griffin felt the musics’ theatrical, atmospheric quality was an ideal backdrop to a physical theatre piece of this kind. The Neon Bible Project is unique in its story-telling through movement. There is minimal speaking in the play. “It’s a really exciting concept because I’ve been told that communication is 80 percent physical, but how often do we ever get to see this demonstrated?” said Gabrielle Doucet, a member of the ensemble.

NEON BIBLE, FROM 13
“And it also gives us a great chance to gain experience, as most of us have never had a chance to do work like this” said Katie Macnamara, another student involved in the project. The story exists in a futuristic world, over-run by technology. As with all utopian societies, the world slowly crumbles, throwing the second act into a destitute and primal habitat in which its members must fight for their very survival. Since the group is travelling overseas, an elaborate set was not an option. Instead, they are using costumes, masks, and fabric they have
designed and created. “It’s been really interesting watching the costumes evolve from start to finish, especially because they have had to change with the story to become more meaningful and relevant,” said Liz Davies, a Kanata resident and one of the costume designers. Each student involved plays a role in the production aspect of the show such as publicity, lighting design and stage managing. Perhaps the most difficult task taken on so far by the students was fundraising, as they have an ambitious goal of $21,000. The entire class agrees that the rehearsal process is, and will continue
to be, an intensive learning experience. “To think that this is the culminating event of our four years at Arts Canterbury is surreal, and I know we will have a great deal of pride in our final product,” said student Veronica Schleihauf. The class will be performing The Neon Bible Project from May 26 to May 29 at the Barrie Alexander Auditorium in the school and at the International Children’s Festival on May 30. For more information on the show, visit www.neonbibleproject.com or email neonbibleproject@gmail.com to order tickets.

Students running for a reason JESSICA CUNHA KOURIER-STANDARD

Earl of March Secondary School students are lacing up their running shoes to take part in the 2010 MDS Nordion Run for a Reason Challenge on May 29. The students are raising money in support of the Ottawa Hospital during the fundraising component of the Ottawa Race Weekend. “These young philanthropists are committed to their community and are helping us build a better hospital through their involvement,” wrote Ingrid Gingras, media relations and marketing officer of the Ottawa Hospital Foundation in an email. Physical education teacher Drew James explained the reason behind their choice in charities. “I took a poll at the beginning and I asked them, ‘Where do you think we want to donate this stuff, should it be to where it’s needed most?’” he said. “Personally I’ve lost my mom to cancer, I lost my father-in-law to cancer, and I said, ‘How many people here have lost somebody that they were close to or related to from cancer?’ There was about 85 per cent of the kids’ hands went up. It
was a group decision, it wasn’t just me. They decided yes this is where we needed to go; they made that their own choice.” The students have set their goal to raise $2,500. “Last year my fitness class was able to raise just over $2,300 and this year we’ve set a goal for $2,500,” said James. “Hopefully we’ll surpass that. Tony Graham (car dealership) is matching up to $200,000, dollar for dollar, every donation we get.” Running a 10-kilometre race is the class summative, and the students have put a lot of effort into their training. “In the spring, we start off with mostly anaerobic-type training, and then we go into our race training,” said James. The students start running in increments, working from two kilometres up to eight before the race. “They definitely ramp it up,” said James. “We give them heart rate monitors. We make sure we explain to them all the different benefits of this type of exercise. We give them the idea of where their target training heart rate should be, how to calculate it. It’s not just a ‘Go run’;

A Kanata family had the experience of a lifetime when they travelled to Vancouver for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Last week we published part one in the three-part series where we saw the Chatigny family arrive in B.C. and begin their Olympic journey. Here is part two of the family’s firsthand account at the Vancouver Olympics. On February 24, we packed up the Dodge Grand Caravan and left for Whistler, B.C. I have never been on the Sea to Sky before and I have to say it is something not to be missed. The scenery was like nothing I have ever seen. As the name Sea to Sky entails, you leave Vancouver at sea level, with the Pacific Ocean very much in view, and start travelling north into the mountains. Once we made it to Whistler, we were off to the next Olympic event – women’s two-man bobsled. We didn’t have a lot of time, as you were supposed to get to the venue approximately three hours in advance. We walked over to the bottom of the Excalibur Gondola in Whistler Village and waited in a long line for our turn. Once off the gondola, we again went through security and into the venue. We were running slightly late, so the third run was already underway. We entered the spectator bowl just in

time to see a blue bobsled come screaming down the final turn – upside down! The entire crowd gasped with dismay and held their breath until the bobsled came to a stop in the finish area and the two women from Great Britain got out safely. Surprisingly, in bobsled, as long as competitors both cross the line in the sled, even if they are upside down, they still get a time and are able to do the next run.
Competitors are only disqualified if one falls out of the sled, which we would see in run number four. The Canadian sleds were very well placed after the third run – in first and third – so we knew the fourth and final run would be exciting. The third place sled crossed the line in second place, so we knew we were guaranteed a silver medal. OLYMPIC, SEE 17

The top Canadian sled was last down the run and did we tell them why they’re doing this and what they should be not disappoint. They won the Olympic gold medal and it looking for. was a one-two finish for Canada. I didn’t think this could “They’ve been really training hard. I’ve been surprised by get any better. how quickly they’ve taken to the training.” We immediately trekked up the hill to watch the flower Some students from last year’s class also signed up to parpresentation. ticipate in the run. As we fought our way through the throngs of people, I was surprised that I could not find it in me to cheer loudly and proudly – I was too busy wiping tears of joy off my face. The morning of Friday, February 26, we were off to yet another venue, the women’s alpine skiing slalom event, at Whistler Creekside. We stood out in the rain and wet snow for almost two hours until the first run was completed. My daughter and I stood beside a woman who was one of the volunteers in blue. I found out that she and her son hailed from Ottawa and she was the buyer at one of our local ski stores in town. I don’t know exactly how many thousands of people were at a venue of that size, but it amazed me that we would end up standing beside somebody from our home town. After the first run, we decided to leave the venue. We were all very wet and tired, so we decided it was best not to return for the afternoon runs. It would have been miserable as we were already soaked. Saturday afternoon we were back at the Whistler Sliding Centre, this time for the men’s four-man bobsled event. Once again, Canada was well placed going into the event, sitting in second and fourth. YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY FLOORING After run number three, our Canadian sleds were still sitting second and fifth, so the venue was full of excitement. In the end, the Canada #2 sled, piloted by Lyndon Rush, ran to a spectacular bronze medal finish, just 1/1000 of a second out of second place. “I don’t think we could have done anything differently,” he said. “We’re very proud of this bronze medal.” And so were we.

We’ve got about 27-30 kids depending.” The run starts on May 29 at 6:30 p.m. in front of the Provincial Court House at Laurier Avenue and Elgin Street. jessica.cunha@metroland.com

Which Of These Neuropathy Symptoms Do You Suffer From?
Write to us at
If You Suffer From A Single One Of These Torturous Symptoms – Numbness, Tingling, Or Sharp Nerve Pain – THEN THE FACTS BELOW MAY BE THE MOST IMPORTANT YOU HAVE EVER READ IN YOUR LIFE! Neuropathy affects every part of your life -walking, sitting, and even sleeping.
Numerous studies have proven chiropractic's effectiveness in helping nerve conditions...
Maybe you've had multiple tests, only to find out no one has any idea what you have. Maybe you've even been put on a drug with heavy side effects.
“Manipulation [chiropractic adjustments], with or without exercise, improved symptoms more than medical care did after both 3 and 12 months.”– British Medical Journal
x x x x x
Pins and needles feeling Numbness in the hands or feet Tingling or burning sensations Weakness in the arms or legs Sharp shooting or burning pains
Patients showed an 85.5% resolution of the nerve symptoms after only 9 chiropractic treatments. - Journal of Chiropractic Medicine 2008 What these studies mean is that with chiropractic care, you could soon be enjoying life...without those aggravating nerve problems. How to Find Out If This Will Work For You
If so you may have a condition called peripheral neuropathy. My name is Dr. Craig Hazel, owner of Synergy Chiropractic Wellness Centre. Over the past few years we’ve opened the doors. I’ve seen hundreds of people with neuropathy and nerve problems and have them leaving the office pain free. More than 20 million North Americans suffer from peripheral neuropathy, a problem caused by damage to the nerves that supply your arms and legs. This painful condition interferes with your body's ability to transmit messages to your muscles, skin, joints, or internal organs. If ignored or mistreated, neuropathy can lead to irreversible health conditions. Why not get help by those trained to correct the major cause of peripheral neuropathy? Data from the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners' Job Analysis of Chiropractic lists arm and leg neuropathy as the second most common nerve problem treated by chiropractors. Often neuropathy is caused by a degenerating spine pressing on the nerve roots. This can happen in any of the vertebral joints from the neck all the way down to the tail bone. The Single Most Important Solution to Your Neuropathy By using gentle techniques, I'm able to release the pressure that has built up on the nerve. This allows the nerve to heal and the symptoms to go away.

Be careful, aware, when discarding cigarettes With warmer weather comes higher risk of fires warns Ottawa Fire Services OTTAWA FIRE SERVICES Ottawa Fire Services is warning smokers to carefully discard their cigarettes to prevent both home and outdoor fires. “Every year firefighters responded to fires where the cause has been determined or suspected to be related to improper or unsafe discarding of cigarettes,” said fire
chief John deHooge. With more people smoking outside, a handy spot to put out their butts is over the balcony or the closest flowerpot or planter. The cigarette can smolder for some time, creating a fire and igniting other combustibles in the immediate area. So far this year, improperly discarded cigarettes have accounted
“
for over $2.6 million in fire loss and displaced dozens of people in Ottawa. The Ontario fire marshal office’s 2004 to 2008 Fire Trends Report attributes careless smoking as the number one cause of fire related death in Ontario. A small measure of prevention and good housekeeping habits can go a long way in reducing the
number of fires caused by unsafe discarding of cigarette butts. Use large, deep ashtrays or appropriate fire-safe containers like outdoor ashtrays. • Never smoke in sleeping areas or near upholstered furniture. • Never smoke while using drugs or alcohol. • Never leave lit cigarettes unattended.
•
Never throw cigarette butts out of your car window. In addition, never discard cigarettes in a planter or potting soil. Potting soil that is sold by retailers often contains a mix of materials – such as peat moss, shredded wood and bark and fertilizers. When these materials dry out, a fire can easily start when a lit cigarette is put out into this soil mix.

Pay attention: national road safety week kicks off Drivers 23 times more likely to crash if texting while driving, according to study CANADA SAFETY COUNCIL From cell phones and GPS’ to mp3 players and a morning coffee, distracted road users are an issue facing all Canadians. Whether you are a driver, a motorcyclist, a pedestrian or a cyclist, road user distractions affect everyone. During National Road Safety Week, May 21 to 27, the Canada Safety Council wants you to take precautions while you are out and about. Keep your eyes on the road and on other road users. Be vigilant and stay aware of your surroundings at all times. During the spring and summer months is it especially important for car and truck drivers to keep their eyes on the road, as vulnerable road users – pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists – are more prevalent on Canadian roads. They are at greater risk of potential injury or death should they
become involved in a collision on Canada’s roadways. Vulnerable road users make up approximately 25 per cent of road users killed or seriously injured each year in traffic crashes. In 2007, 662 vulnerable road users were killed and 3,485 were seriously injured. Drivers must be aware of pedestrians crossing at intersections and people coming out between parked cars, especially small children. Drivers must also share the road with cyclists and motorcyclists. If you are distracted by a ringing phone or trying to program your GPS it becomes harder to react and avoid potential collisions with vulnerable road users. It is essential to limit your distractions behind the wheel to ensure the safety of you, other drivers, and vulnerable road users. Distracting activities that take your eyes off the road are more likely to lead to collisions.
Teens and young adults under 35 are the most frequent users of cell phones while driving. Studies show that a driver using a cell phone is four times more likely to be in a crash than a driver focused on the road. Other studies show that dialing and texting carries the highest degree of risk of all cell phone-related activities. A driver is 23 times more likely to get into a collision if they are texting or typing behind the wheel. Text messaging takes driver’s eyes away from the road for 4.6 seconds over a six-second interval. This compares to driving an entire length of a football field without looking at the road while travelling 90 kilometres per hour. Canada Safety Council urges you to always make driving your first priority. Hands-free is not risk free. When you’re talking on a tele-
phone, whether it’s hands-free or hands-held, the attention is to the conversation and less on the road.
• •
•
•
•
SAFETY TIPS Avoid unnecessary distractions and always make the driving task your top priority. Keep both hands on the wheel or the handle bars and keep your eyes on the road and looking for potential hazards. Turn your phone on silent so you are not tempted to answer it if you receive a call or a message. Learn how to program and operate your hands-free device without the need to look at it. Don’t get so wrapped up in conversation that you drift into the other lane. Pull off the road if safe and legal to do so; this is critical if it’s an

important or emotional conversation. Keep conversations brief by telling the caller that you are driving so that you can return your full attention to the task. Drive defensively; watch out for other road users who are not paying attention. Always be on the lookout for and yield to vulnerable road users, even if they don’t have the right-of-way. Be prepared for inexperienced and vulnerable road users to appear unexpectedly at both intersection and non-intersection locations, on both urban and rural roadways. As a vulnerable road user it is important to be visible and predictable to others.

Peggy Feltmate Kanata South Kanata Recreation Complex renovations will turn little used space into a community asset. I recently had a chance to go through the second floor of the Kanata Recreation Complex where renovations are taking place. When the work is complete our community will get much-needed meeting and recreation space. Even though space for meetings or activities is hard to find in Kanata, for much of the time the second floor of the Kanata Recreation Complex is vacant. It is an awkward size and the acoustics are terrible. With the renovations, the space will be converted into a large meeting room and program space for recreation activities.

When summer sun doesn’t lead to summer fun: stay safe and healthy during the warm months CANADA SAFETY COUNCIL Participating in activities and sports outdoors during the summer months is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. However, you must remember to protect your skin from harmful ultra-violet (UV) rays. During National Summer Safety Week the Canada Safety Council encourages you to protect yourself in the sun all summer long. Always apply plenty of sunscreen before going outside, whether it’s sunny or cloudy, hot or cool. Make sure it has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 against both UVA and UVB rays. Use it generously and re-apply after swimming and exercise. HARMFUL RAYS Nearly one in five Canadians is likely to develop skin cancer sometime during their lives. Melanoma – the most dangerous type of skin cancer – is the type most likely to be fatal. It makes up one to two per cent of all cancers, and incidence rates continue to increase with every passing year. It is also one of the most common cancers among young people in Canada aged 15 to 29.
Young women seem to be the most vulnerable to melanoma. For the year 2009, the Canadian Cancer Society had estimated that 940 Canadians, or three people a day, would die from melanoma and 5,000 more would be diagnosed with it. The good news? Skin cancer is almost totally preventable. When you get a sunburn, the long-term effects of skin injured by the sun can be very serious. The more time young people spend unprotected in the sun, the higher their risk for developing skin cancer later in life. Dermatologists describe a burn as being the skin cells’ response to injury. Getting a tan also injures skin cells. When skin cells are damaged, skin cancer can result from these irreparable cell mutations. Outdoor physical activity can be healthy, fun and safe if you remain protected. Follow the Canada Sun Guide, created by Canada Safety Council and other partners, to help Canadians combine sun safety with outdoor activities. MINIMIZE SUN EXPOSURE Schedule outdoor physical activities when UV rays are at their weakest – before 11 a.m. and after 4 p.m., especially between

the months of April and October. Always keep children under the age of one out of the sun. Remember that skin doesn’t have to be hot to burn, so don’t be fooled by cloudy or overcast weather. Remember too that water, snow, sand and concrete can reflect and increase the sun’s burning rays. SEEK AND CREATE SHADE Seek natural shade from trees and buildings. Plant trees in schoolyards and other play areas. Use shade umbrellas, or create other forms of shade if natural shade is not possible. Keep playpens, strollers and carriages in shaded areas. COVER UP Eighty per cent of skin cancers occur above the neck. Cover children’s heads, necks and ears with a broad brimmed hat when outdoors. Protect arms and legs with tightly woven, loose fitting, cotton clothing. Children should wear a T-shirt over their bathing suit, and long shorts instead of short shorts.
Wear UVA/UVB protective sunglasses – children can wear them too. USE SUNSCREEN Have children use a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays with an SPF of 15 or more. Apply sunscreen generously before all outdoor physical activities such as swimming, skateboarding, biking or even walking. Remember to apply at least 20 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply often, as perspiration will reduce the effectiveness. PAY ATTENTION Pay attention to the UV index – a measure of the strength of the sun’s burning ultraviolet rays. The higher the number, the stronger the sun will be. UV rays usually reach their peak around noon, so minimize exposure to the sun in the middle of the day. When you are outside, stay in the shade, and make it a habit to wear a wide-brimmed hat, long sleeves and protective sunglasses. A City of Ottawa guide for wild animal care CITY OF OTTAWA Many well-intentioned people needlessly remove juvenile animals from a healthy, natural life in the wild. They think the animal is sick, injured or orphaned when that is often not the case. Where an animal is in need of help, it requires specialized care to recover and return to the wild. You cannot keep wildlife in captivity without approval from the Ministry of Natural Resources. However, a person may possess a wild animal for up to 24 hours to transport it to a wildlife custodian or a veterinarian. DETERMINING IF WILDLIFE IS ORPHANED It is normal for some species to leave their offspring temporarily alone, especially during the day. For example, deer and cottontail rabbits spend much of the day away from their well-camouflaged offspring to minimize the chance of predators finding them. To determine if young wildlife is truly
orphaned: • Check the animal periodically for 24 to 48 hours to see if it is still around, but keep your distance. • Keep cats and dogs away from the area where the young animal is; the adult will not return if it is noisy or if predators or people are close by.
• • • • • •
SIGNS OF INJURY OR ILLNESS Blood, wounds or swelling on the body Body covered in fleas Unusual or uneven loss of fur or feathers Difficult or raspy breathing or sneezing A dangling leg or wing Closed eyes; head tucked under wing
CARE NECESSARY TO HELP THE ANIMAL Contact a wildlife custodian who can help you assess the situation and will provide advice on what action to take. • If specialized and immediate care is
•
•
•
necessary to help the animal, take it to a wildlife custodian or a veterinarian within 24 hours of capture. If you must handle the animal, follow the instructions provided by the wildlife custodian on how to minimize risk of injury to yourself and to the animal. Wear protective clothing and equipment, such as leather gloves, to avoid bites or scratches, and wash hands well after handling the animal. It is important to recognize that many of the volunteer-operated organizations have limited capacity to accept animals, especially during the spring.
DISEASED OR DEAD WILDLIFE To report dead animals, birds or bats contact the Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre, www.ccwhc.ca or 1866-673-4781. If you suspect there is a public health risk from a sick wild animal, such as rabies, or you or your pet had contact with a suspected rabid animal, contact your local
public health unit immediately. Rabies is fatal for humans and animals if not treated. Symptoms of rabies and several other diseases in animals can include tremors, aggressive behaviour, partial paralysis, convulsions and loss of fear of humans. CONTACT INFORMATION: Public Health units: Call 1-866-532-3161 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday to Friday or visit www.health.gov.on.ca/english/public/contact/phu/phuloc_mn.html for a list of offices. Do you want to be alerted on your handheld device if ice time becomes available last minute? There could soon be an ‘app’ for that. City Council today made a bold move in support of opening City data not protected by privacy laws to the public to encourage innovative new uses. “I am proud that Ottawa has embraced the rapidly growing open data movement,” said Mayor Larry O’Brien. “Open data will give free access to machine-readable information that will leverage the city’s data to improve community experience and stimulate economic growth.” Nearly two dozen data sets – including information on basketball courts, pathways and sports fields – are now available at www.ottawa. ca/opendata. More will be added soon. People can use this data for any number of reasons, including mobile device applications. To that end, Council today approved an ‘Open App’ development contest to run this fall. Prize money and incentives will total $50,000. “The mayor’s task force on eGovernment and now city council have recognized the value and importance of being open to the public in
this way,” said Coun. Rob Jellett, chair of the corporate services and economic development committee. “We are pleased to launch the Open Data Ottawa site and we are confident that a growing bank of open data sets will encourage innovation, economic growth and improved service delivery.” The initial release of data focuses primarily on parks and recreation information, such as recreational facilities, skating rinks and parks data that are some of the most popular on the city’s website but that, until now, has not existed in reusable formats. “Through user feedback and consultations planned in the coming months, Open Data Ottawa will continue to evolve as we gain insight into where to focus our efMaking outdoor living beautiful, since 1995. forts,” said North Kanata Coun.
