‘It was a once-in-alifetime opportunity’ Katimavik girl greets Queen JENNIFER MCINTOSH KOURIER-STANDARD Madison Trudeau has a great story to tell her friends this summer. The 10-year-old Katimavik girl met the Queen of England during her visit to Ottawa on Wednesday, June 30. Madision presented a bouquet of flowers to the Queen after she stepped off the plane at Ottawa International Airport. “She said that it was very thoughtful,” said Madison. “I didn’t know what to say.” Madison, who said she was nervous about “messing up” during the event, remembered to curtsy after she presented the bouquet. “I learned how to curtsy,” said Madison, a Grade 5 student at Castlefrank Elementary School. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I’ll remember it for the rest of my life,” said the Katimavik girl. Madison said she was given the honour because she is the niece of Transportation and Infrastructure Minister John Baird.

After she presented the flowers, photographers and reporters surrounded the 10-year-old, and Madison held her own impromptu press conference, said the girl’s mother, Virginia Bertrim. “The Queen is a remarkable woman,” said Bertrim. “Quite stunning. Just lovely.” Madison and her mother also shook the hand of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. The royal visitors arrived in Ottawa after departing from Halifax where they began the nine-day tour of Canada on June 28. NAC VISIT Her majesty was in Ottawa for the unveiling of a statue dedicated to jazz musician Oscar Peterson at the National Arts Centre on June 30. Heritage minister James Moore said the monarch and the Duke were entertained by Peterson when he played at the sovereign’s Golden Jubilee Gala in Toronto in 2002.
