‘It was a once-in-alifetime opportunity’ Katimavik girl greets Queen JENNIFER MCINTOSH KOURIER-STANDARD Madison Trudeau has a great story to tell her friends this summer. The 10-year-old Katimavik girl met the Queen of England during her visit to Ottawa on Wednesday, June 30. Madision presented a bouquet of flowers to the Queen after she stepped off the plane at Ottawa International Airport. “She said that it was very thoughtful,” said Madison. “I didn’t know what to say.” Madison, who said she was nervous about “messing up” during the event, remembered to curtsy after she presented the bouquet. “I learned how to curtsy,” said Madison, a Grade 5 student at Castlefrank Elementary School. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I’ll remember it for the rest of my life,” said the Katimavik girl. Madison said she was given the honour because she is the niece of Transportation and Infrastructure Minister John Baird.

After she presented the flowers, photographers and reporters surrounded the 10-year-old, and Madison held her own impromptu press conference, said the girl’s mother, Virginia Bertrim. “The Queen is a remarkable woman,” said Bertrim. “Quite stunning. Just lovely.” Madison and her mother also shook the hand of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. The royal visitors arrived in Ottawa after departing from Halifax where they began the nine-day tour of Canada on June 28. NAC VISIT Her majesty was in Ottawa for the unveiling of a statue dedicated to jazz musician Oscar Peterson at the National Arts Centre on June 30. Heritage minister James Moore said the monarch and the Duke were entertained by Peterson when he played at the sovereign’s Golden Jubilee Gala in Toronto in 2002.

Public or private — who owns the beach at Constance Bay? The City of Ottawa has thrown its hands up in the air saying the only thing it can say with all certainty is that it’s not the municipality. Landowners along the shoreline say the beach is private property. The hundreds of people from the city’s west end who regularly use the beach say it’s traditionally public property. The Kourier-Standard will explore the dispute in a three-part series: Beach battle. This week in part one we talk to the land owners who say the beach is private property.

According to homeowner John Nightingale, it all started back in 2008 when an article about Constance Bay beach ran in a local newspaper with West Carleton Coun. Eli El-Chantiry calling the community beach “a jewel.” Before then, local residents who own beachfront property would see 100 to 150 people up at the Point Beach on a nice summer day during the weekend. After that article was printed, the crowds soared to over 800, said Nightingale, who lives on Lane Street and whose house backs on to the beach. “Manageability and control of the crowds was impossible,” he said. “Lawless behaviour increased proportionately. Why did the crowds escalate so dramatically? Three things come to mind.”

Those three instigators, said Nightingale, were social networking tools, police inaction and the above mentioned article with “Our councillor talking about the beauty and water quality of this fantastic resource. In my opinion, our councillor was essentially inviting anyone from the City of Ottawa to visit our property.” PLAN 412 The nine Lane Street residents who own beachfront property are considered a part of Plan 412. The stretch of beach they live on is the landowners’ property down to the shoreline, or the low water mark, according to the property deeds. “Judge (Claude) Paris found that the lots on Plan 412, because of the original Crown Patent and the wording on Plan 412 itself, do indeed extend to the water’s edge (low water mark),” wrote the law firm Soloway, Wright, Houston, Greenberg, O’Grady,

However, since that time, the notion of ownership has come under question. Out-of towners, people from Kanata, Dunrobin, Stittsville, and as far east as Orleans, have enjoyed the Point Beach for years. As the numbers in the beach crowd grew, so did the threats, garbage, lawless behaviour and vandalism, said Nightingale, who has been named chairman of the Lane Street residents. BEACH BATTLE, SEE 5

“It is a fitting tribute to a man who was Canada’s musical ambassador,” he said. “The statue is a wonderful rendition of this larger-than-life man.” While most of the crowd was craning to catch a glimpse of the royal couple, there were a few out to enjoy the musical and the Jazz Festival. Pamela Lawler, a resident of Centrepointe, said that she just happened to be having lunch at Confederation Park and wandered over with her seven-month-old daughter Neve to see what all the fuss was about. “It’s really exciting,” she said, having caught a glimpse of her majesty’s glove as the car drove up Elgin Street. Jeannette Churchill said she came out with her friends because of the legacy of Oscar Peterson. “We love jazz and the Queen being here is just a really nice bonus,” she said. Bernice Wyce is a royalist and came out with her friends and family to catch a glimpse at our head of state. “I try to come out and see her every time she is in the city,” Wyce said. Nepean’s Laura Weaver got a good look at the Queen too. She said being at the NAC to see Queen Elizabeth was important to her because of her father. “The Queen gave my father a medal,” said Weaver, adding that the award stemmed from her father’s wartime service. “He went to Buckingham Palace and he shook the Queen’s hand. “My mom saw (the Queen) the last time she was in Canada, and I wanted the same thing, so it’s a full circle.” Asked if the wait for the Queen’s arrival was worth the trip, the traffic and the

crowds, Weaver didn’t hesitate: “Oh yes. Totally worth it.” Even though Nepean resident Bob Algie knew he wouldn’t see much, he came out to see her majesty Queen Elizabeth during a visit to the National Arts Centre in honour of his late mother. “She was a royalist,” he said. “She died awhile ago at the age of 101, but I guess I am here for her.”

Algie said the atmosphere was kind of exciting, but it wasn’t new to him. “I have seen the queen before she was married, even before she was queen,” he said. “But I think it’s important, it’s part of our history and our legacy as Canadians.” This trip marks the monarch’s 22nd visit to Canada. Other stops on the trip include Waterloo, Ont., and Winnipeg. With files by Blair Edwards

“There has been public drunkenness, threats against the elderly, public urination, public defecation,” said Nightingale. “We can’t deal with crowds this size. It’s just not acceptable. “The majority – certainly not all – of the new visitors coming to our property were doing so because this was the beach where apparently no laws existed. The visitors knew that you could drink alcohol, smoke dope, litter, urinate wherever you saw fit. You could do anything you wanted without police interference. This would never happen at any of the City of Ottawa beaches.” UNLAWFUL BEHAVIOUR His neighbour, Joyce Nightingale, who is of no relation, said she is tired of fighting with the rude people who settle themselves on the beach behind her house. “People used to be nice and respectful,” she said. “Now they just start threatening.” Joyce Nightingale has lived in her cottage for 75 years. “It’s got a lot of memories for me and I have a lot of neighbours,” she said. “None of us are that young. They’ve had enough; for the last years of our life we don’t need this.” She said she has had her lawn furniture burned during beach bonfires and has encountered a number of rude beachgoers who refused to clean up after themselves after drinking. “We don’t know what to do about the liability,” she said if someone got hurt. “We’re all liable.” Since the Constance Bay beach is not cityowned, the homeowners are at risk if something happens, she said. City-owned beaches like Britannia Beach, Mooney’s Bay Beach and Petrie Island Beach have lifeguards, changing areas and public washrooms. “If this was a public beach, we’d have all those things,” said John Nightingale.

‘STOP BEING DEFIANT’ The advocate group Friends against Privatizing Constance Bay Beaches hasn’t won any friends among the Nightingales. “Rick (Dooher) doesn’t live in Constance Bay,” said Nightingale. “He lives in Dunrobin. 95 per cent of their members are outside Constance Bay.” Dooher and Jane Currie are in the process of creating the Beach Protocol Implementation Committee as a way to identify and resolve the issues in the community surrounding the beach. However, Nightingale said they are not interested in collaborating with the group. “It’s absurd,” he said. “Where else have you ever heard of a group of non-owners who can decide what to do with your property – when and how to use your property? They have two options: take it through a recognizable community association or raise the funds to take it to a higher court judge and get his opinion. I guarantee they will lose. “Show some respect, stop being defiant. Go through the proper channels. We bought a prime piece of property. I don’t want to have to apologize for that.”

NO TRESPASSING A few of the property owners decided to place No Trespassing signs where the access lanes ended to deter people from settling down on the beachfront behind their houses earlier in May this year. The signs say “Private beach to shoreline;

no stopping, no alcohol, no walking after sunset.” It doesn’t mean that people can’t walk or jog along the sand, that’s not the issue, said Nightingale. “For them to just ignore all the signs and plop their butts down, it’s disrespectful,” he said. The police presence at the beach has increased since the privatization issue escalated at the beginning of May this year. Homeowners are to ask the offending party to leave, and if they don’t comply, then an officer will get involved, escorting the beachgoers to a public access area, 20-metres wide on Bishop Davis Drive, said police. The warnings are considered part of a period of education for the public but Nightingale said the period should be over by now. “My plea is to the police to do their job, to enforce the laws; that means being firm, articulate, decisive.” The police need to start handing out tickets JESSICA CUNHA PHOTO to trespassers, he said. “They just can’t keep being nice guys. OPINION EDITORIAL

LETTER

Screening the sunscreen

All shook up

Ottawa was mired in a heat wave last week with thermometers rising over thirty degrees and the city choking in a blanket of humidity. With the heat, out comes the age old question: is sunscreen good for our health? Sunscreen has been touted over the past several decades as an essential protector from the sun’s burning rays and the advent of skin cancer, but some Canadian dermatologists say that incidence rates have more than doubled in the last 20 years for all types of skin cancer. Not applying enough, not reapplying frequently and not purchasing the proper kind of sunscreen are a few of the mistakes that people make. Look for a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. Also make sure the active ingredients are listed as some sunscreens have chemicals that can enter our bloodstream through continued topical uses. Ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, popular UVB and UVA sun blocks known for giving the skin a whitish glow, are being decreased to nanoparticles to reduce visibility on the skin. Although they have been cleared by the U.S. FDA and U.S. national toxicology program, a survey by the Chemical Sensitivities branch in Manitoba found scientists are concerned about particles’ ability to penetrate the skin, inducing free radical formation. They agree there haven’t been enough studies to be sure of the safety of using nanotechnology in personal care products. Like most personal products, it is probably best to stay away from scented products and use those with organic materials whenever you can. But, whatever the research, it is important to remember that sunscreen doesn’t take the place of sensible sun avoidance measures. It is important to wear a hat, keep well hydrated and stay indoors during the middle of the day, when the sun is hottest.

To the editor, On Wed., June 23, I experienced the Ottawa earthquake along with many other people. I heard someone on the radio mention, “Imagine if we would have been sleeping?” Well, on Jan. 17, 1994 at 4:31 in the morning, I experienced a level 6.8 earthquake (Richter scale) in the San Fernando Valley, southern California, known as the Northridge earthquake. I woke up in the dark with things tumbling down around me. Thank God, I made it out safely but even the level 5.0 earthquake shook me up (literally). By the way, I wrote an article “Nightmare never ends” for the Kanata Kourier-Standard after that event. Joan Morin Beaverbrook To see video, go to yourottawaregion.com /videozone

LETTER

Blame city staff for Beaver Pond fiasco To the editor, Re: Disturbed over Beaver Pond development, letter, July 1, Kourier-Standard. In his letter Matt Muirhead, inappropriately, in my view, essentially blamed Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson for the impending destruction of the hill on the north side of the Beaver Pond in Kanata north. Among the many facts that he ignored is that Marianne was primarily responsible for obtaining the deal with the early potential developers of Kanata Lakes north for 40 per cent “open” land. Compare that with the provincial requirement of five per cent. Yes, the golf course and hydro corridor were included but we still ended up with much more than open land in that area than anywhere else in Kanata (or Ottawa for that matter). The real culprits for the ridiculous situation we now face were the members of the city planning staff of seven years ago. There was much discussion about where development would go.

Editor in Chief Deb Bodine deb.bodine@metroland.com 613-221-6210 Managing Editor Suzanne Landis suzanne.landis@metroland.com 613-221-6226 Associate Editor: Blair Edwards blair.edwards@metroland.com 613-221-6238 Reporter Jessica Cunha jessica.cunha@metroland.com 613-221-6239 Flyer Sales Bob Burgess bob.burgess@metroland.com 613.221.6227

As president of the Kanata Beaverbrook Community Association at the time, I had a conversation with the senior executive of Urbandale about swapping the rocky Beaver Pond hill for another area. He was quite amenable to that idea. However, the city’s plan showed the sewer connection for the proposed development around the Goulbourn Forced Road running in a straight line from Kimmins Court through the rock outcrop. Apparently no one even looked at a contour map. If the city was going to blast the hill for the sewer line, the developers saw no compelling reason to change the proposed plan. When I had a chance to speak with the then head of the city’s planning department (who had been appointed following amalgamation) his response was, “We blast rock all the time.” In September 2003 the city held what normally would have been one of their obscure “open” sessions regarding the plan.

Through an article in this paper, citizens were alerted to the situation and some 600 showed up. Instead of acknowledging that concern, the city staff took this as an affront to their planning and became more arrogant. Subsequently, city council, in its typical fashion, accepted the recommendation of the staff. Today’s planning department is more open to citizen’s concerns, but city council cast the plan “in stone” years ago and appears uninterested in reopening it. Fred Boyd Former president KBCA

Check your smoke alarm CITY OF OTTAWA Did you know that working smoke alarms can cut your chances of dying in a fire by 50 per cent? In Ontario, having working smoke alarms is not only a good idea -- it’s the law. Ottawa Fire Services recommends you install a smoke alarm on every level of your home, and outside your sleeping areas. Test your smoke alarms every month and change the batteries twice a year when you change your clocks. A working smoke alarm and a home fire escape plan will significantly increase your chances of surviving a fire.

‘I felt the fire again’

11 Kanata Kourier-Standard - JULY 08, 2010

O’Brien announces run for mayor BLAIR EDWARDS KOURIER-STANDARD Ottawa mayor Larry O’Brien announced he will seek a second term in office on Wednesday, June 30. “I’m here to tell you probably the worst kept secret in Ottawa,” said O’Brien outside his downtown condo. “It is my intention of running for another term for being mayor of the capital of Canada,” he said. “We’re on the brink of something magnificent, something wonderful and quite frankly I want to finish the job that I started in 2006. “This morning when I woke up I felt the fire again.” The announcement comes a day after city council approved the controversial Lansdowne Park development on Tuesday, June 29. “What we have done in the last term of council is simply outstanding and I want that to continue,” said O’Brien “Therefore, I’m putting my name in the hat to be mayor of my hometown, Ottawa.” O’Brien said the city has made great strides forward under his leadership, adding he wanted voters to elect him based on his performance in office. “If they think the city has pro-

gressed forward (in the past) three and a half years then I’m going to ask for their vote, because there’s more to be done,” said O’Brien. The mayor said he didn’t want the city to go back to being “Nottawa”. O’Brien campaigned in 2006 on a “zero-means-zero” tax platform, a promise he was unable to achieve during his nearly four years in office. “I will never stop trying to get zero as a tax rate,” O’Brien said. O’Brien’s 2006 election campaign was also marked by a promise to scrap the north-south light rail plan. Council later cancelled the route leaving the city on the hook for a $36-million settlement with Siemens, the firm hired to design and build the north-south line. The federal and provincial governments have since agreed to spend $1.2 billion on the City of Ottawa’s new light-rail plan, starting with an east-west line from Blair Road to Tunney’s Pasture passing through a downtown tunnel. Under O’Brien’s watch the city has voted to renovate the Ottawa Congress Centre, to provide more convention space for businesses, and to reduce the amount of sewage flowing into the Ottawa River.

Ottawa Mayor Larry O’Brien announced he will seek a second term of office outside his downtown condo on June 30.

Council has also approved sewer system upgrades and the city’s new green bin program. O’Brien’s term in office was also marked by charges of influence peddling during the last municipal election, ending in a full acquittal. “I think the trial certainly had an effect on my public persona,” said O’Brien. “I was exonerated.” O’Brien said he decided to run after looking at the list of names on the mayoral slate, including Bay Coun. Alex Cullen and former Ontario cabinet minister and mayor 379610

of pre-amalgamation Ottawa, Jim Watson. Recent polls by the city’s media indicate this is Watson’s race to lose, placing him well ahead in the popular vote. O’Brien said the 2010 mayoral election will be about leadership. “Leadership is about getting things done,” O’Brien said. O’Brien called Watson a professional politician. “I’ve told Jim many times that he’s the single best politician that I’ve ever met,” said O’Brien.

“I don’t think that’s what the city needs. I think the city needs progress.” O’Brien said he couldn’t think of a single thing Watson did as a former mayor of Ottawa to make the city a better place. “We will not go back to the constipation of amalgamation, the inability to make decisions, the inability to forward in this city,” O’Brien said. “In 2006 the city voted for change. In 2010 I want the city to vote so I can finish the job.” blair.edwards@metroland.com

More money needed for long term care

LAST IN A FOUR PART SERIES

By Mike Adler and Rob O’Flanagan

T

he answer to gridlock across Ontario’s longterm care system is an injection of new money, elder advocates say. For nursing-home operators, a top priority is the fulfillment of a long-standing promise from the province to fund more staff. Ontario’s Health Quality Council, a watchdog agency, sees more assisted-living homes as a potential pressure relief valve for overwhelmed nursing homes. For thousands of Ontario families battling the system’s long waiting lists and cumbersome bureaucracy, any relief measure would do. “I think the first thing that is needed are more homes,” Denise Riekstins of Toronto wrote in a typical e-mail response during research for Metroland’s special report. “The waiting lists are ridiculous, especially for newer homes. I also think that more thought should go into how to improve home care, maybe make it more affordable, so the person can stay in their home as along as possible. Institutional homes are certainly not like home.” Health Minister Deb Matthews says quality improvements are taking hold now in all nursing homes, with a focus on reducing traditional health risks such as falls and bed sores. Efforts to make more home care available as an alternative are in progress under a $1.1-billion program created in 2007. More short-stay beds are being created, to help reduce the number of seniors placed permanently in long-term care. Such “restorative” beds, as Matthews calls them, allow elderly people with short-term needs to be placed temporarily

in nursing-home beds to regain their health, and then go home. But what exactly has to happen to produce real change? “I think more time,” Matthews said. “I mean, it does take time to change a system.” Christina Bisanz, CEO of the Ontario Long Term Care Association, believes in a conversion that would see nursing homes become a “hub” for all types of care. With the right kind of planning, she says, Ontario’s existing 625 homes could feature day programs for the frail elderly who have dementia or chronic diseases, “to help them to live in the community as long as possible.” Bisanz said nursing homes can become “more than just the residence where 24-7 care is given.” In some Ontario long-term care homes, that’s already happening. At Shalom Village in Hamilton, residents pump iron to help maintain functional mobility. Shalom’s health-club concept was originally regarded skeptically by potential funding bodies, said Pat Morden, the home’s chief executive. A longterm care home is traditionally viewed as a place of restful care. That’s changing. Experts in the field of gerontology say such workouts help prevent falls and other debilitating mishaps, and can also improve cognitive ability. Benefits flow to the home and the resident. Attitudes about what longterm care settings should be like and what services they should offer are changing rapidly. Researchers are looking at ways to incorporate brain-benefiting music classes and computer games, and body-strengthening practices such as yoga and tai chi, into daily routines to make the final years of life more rewarding, positive and healthier. Morden has witnessed the ca-

pacity of activities such as music to reactivate mind and spirit. One resident who had a musical background but was debilitated by Parkinson’s and dementia began to participate in the home’s long-standing drum circle. He hadn’t spoken for two years. “He was in the drum circle and he was drumming, and he was sobbing,” Morden said. “He just sobbed and sobbed. And then gradually he took over the leadership of the drum circle. That’s the magic, to find those moments for people, at some level.” Demands on long-term care in Ontario are mounting as the population ages, and as a more affluent and informed population demands better care and more services. Expectations of long-term care

have steadily increased in recent decades, said Dominic Ventresca, director of seniors services for Niagara, who oversees eight municipally run homes. Residents who grew up during the Depression were content with “a bed and a meal,” and an occasional visit from a doctor or nurse, Ventresca said. Ontarians now expect care that is above that base level, Ventresca and others said, with a greater selection of meals and activities, and more timely service — not just having nursing or personal support available, but having it delivered in a timely way, such as more frequent changing of diapers and other incontinence products. Gerry Phillips, Ontario minister responsible for seniors said that the province is also encouraging development of tech-

nology — from high-tech pushbutton devices to summon help or monitor health, to low-tech kitchen sinks people in wheelchairs can use — that could help seniors stay home longer. As demand for senior-friendly devices grows, Phillips said, costs should go down. In a decade, the first of the baby boom generation will hit 75. By 2036, the number of Ontarians 75 and over will rise to 2.2 million, from 850,000 today. Seniors will outnumber children in the future, and one might expect that a scramble to build as many new nursing homes as possible would be under way. But that’s not what the province is doing, contrary to what some experts on the elderly advise. Indeed, the focus is on aging in place. Ontario elder advocate Doris Grinspun said Scandinavia incorporates the elderly into dayto-day life, and embraces them as vibrant members of the community. Every senior in Denmark gets a phone call at 75. “Happy Birthday!” says the nurse on the line. “We’d like to discuss how to help you stay in your house as long as you want.” Grinspun, cochair of the Elder Health Coalition, an adviser to the province of Ontario since 2004, said “we haven’t made enough progress” on helping seniors age gracefully at home, and there’s no time to waste. In many places, small steps and shifts in attitude are inching toward a future where it’s intended that most Ontarians won’t need a nursing-home bed, no matter how long they live. Long-term care in Ontario is undergoing “total renovations,” and elder advocates Concerned Friends of Ontario Citizens in Care Facilities said it is pleased with the province’s new patientcentred direction, said Phyllis Hymmen, the group’s president. “There’s a lot of encouraging things happening,” she said, adding people are still afraid of what the future may be like, “but increasingly less so.”

I had to give that up just to do the surgery,” he said. “It was a day or two before the ceremony. I missed receiving two awards and my diploma.” The device implanted in his leg was used to stretch the bone. Every day, he had to turn a key to elongate the device and his leg. “It would extend the leg and the bone would grow back in later on,” said Zeidan. His leg had to be elevated and he was confined to a wheelchair during the recovery process. Because of this, he was advised not to start his post-secondary education right away. “The doctors told me I couldn’t leave the house,” he said. “I had six pins holding the device into my leg. “I did not want to miss it (university) so I decided I would enroll into my program, just to keep up with it. said. “I could not even wear pants for that long. I had pants with a zipper on them. “It was just a matter of dedication, and bearing the pain when it’s unbearable. You want to give up but I had a goal in mind.” That goal was to be the best in his program. “The first year I got the highest mark in class in both classes I took,” said Zeidan. “That pushed me. I thought, you know what, this is possible.” In his second year, Zeidan went back to campus walking and with a full-time course load. He went to his academic advisor and asked how he could achieve the University Medal in International Business, which is awarded by the Senate to the top student in the program. His advisor was shocked. Zeidan said she answered, “‘I never get this question. I normally have students here in tears, looking for a second chance. It’s refreshing to have someone this dedicated.’” UNIVERSITY MEDAL, SEE 15

Light Rail Transit and the Downtown Transit Tunnel Tunney’sPasture T Tunn Tunne unne n y’s y’’sPastur y’sP asture astur e

The growth of population and transit riders in Ottawa over the last 30 years has outgrown the City's transit systems capacity to providing Bus Rapid Transit through the downtown to serve surrounding communities. In November 2008, after input from tens of thousands of Ottawa residents, the City of Ottawa finalized a Transportation Master Plan, adopted overwhelmingly by City Council. This plan sets a bold vision to 2031 for world class public transit in the Nation's capital that will make the City more economically, environmentally and socially sustainable. The cornerstone and first phase of this plan is to run light rail transit from Tunney's Pasture Station to Blair Station along the Transitway and through twin tunnels underneath the downtown core. With $1.2 billion in announced funding from the Federal and Provincial governments, this $2.1 billion 9-year project is on track to deliver many benefits to the residents of the City of Ottawa.

A World-Class System for a World-Class City A Better Environment

Return on Investment Generates $3.2 billion in economic returns from construction alone. Creates 20,000 person-years of employment. Reduces transit-related operating costs by up to $100 million per year once it opens. Increases surrounding commercial property values by as much as 14% and private property as much as 6%.

Operates with virtually no emissions of greenhouse gases or air pollutants and will result in improved local air quality. Net reduction of Green House Gases of 38,000 tonnes per year by 2031. Reduces the City's fuel consumption by 10 million litres annually and stops 5600 tonnes of road salt from leaching into our ecosystem. The Right Transit System

A Better Downtown Cuts the number of buses in the downtown by half. Provides opportunity to dramatically change the downtown core and make the area safer and more pedestrian- and cycle-friendly.

Increases overall transit system reliability especially in inclement weather. Reduces average commute time by 15 minutes. Meets Ottawa's projected transit demand to 2031 and beyond.

Muirhead challenges Wilkinson for Kanata North Community association president declares his candidacy for councillor

349914

A candidate has stepped forward to challenge Marianne Wilkinson for councillor of Kanata North ward. Matt Muirhead signed the papers declaring his candidacy for councillor in the City of Ottawa’s 2010 municipal election at the Kanata Client Service Centre today, July 5. Muirhead is president of the Briarbrook Morgan’s Grant Community Association and a teacher at Sacred Heart Catholic High School. In 2006, Muirhead ran against Wilkinson for councillor of Kanata North, finishing third with 21 per cent of the vote. The 36-year-old Morgan’s Grant man said he has been a long-time supporter of Wilkinson, but was disillusioned with the incumbent councillor’s actions over the past few months. “The first issue that started to in-

furiate me was the special services levy without consultation,” said Muirhead. Wilkinson proposed a motion – that was later approved by council – charging residents of Kanata North a $15 to $18 surcharge annually for 10 years to pay to bury hydro lines on a stretch of Kanata Avenue between Goulbourn Forced to Richardson Side roads. Residents voted at a Kanata North ward council meeting twoto-one in favour of the proposal. But the meeting was only promoted among those who supported the plan, charged Muirhead. “It was not so much the burial of the hydro lines and it was not so much the tax,” said Muirhead. “It was the lack of consultation.” Muirhead said the second issue that brought his candidacy to boil was Wilkinson’s call to stop development of the South March Highlands with only a few months before the developer was scheduled to begin clearing trees for construction.

What if you downsized to Domicile? Why empty nesters are choosing a vibrant urban life

Like any other significant stage of life, seeing your children leave home can be an emotional challenge. Imagine transforming that challenge into an exciting opportunity with the city’s best entertainment, dining, and recreation at your fingertips, ready to fill a new chapter. What would life be like?

You would reinvent your calendar. In the summer, you have beautiful, manicured parks just steps from your door. During the winter, you know that the night’s snowfall will be cleared for you by morning. Someone else oversees your home’s upkeep, from the insulated roof to the heated underground parking garage, while you follow your interests—wherever they lead. Welcome to Domicile—Ottawa’s most respected builder. For over 35 years Domicile has been focused on distinguished urban homes conceived for distinguished urban living. Invest yourself in the pursuits that stir your soul. Donate time to a beloved charity. Learn to play an instrument or speak a new language. Pursue a professional goal that you once set aside to raise your children. When your home takes care of itself, you can take care of all your cravings.

Your kids would beg to visit. Whether you’ve invited old friends for a lively soirée, or your kids are planning a trip home, spoil them with the food prepared in your contemporary kitchen, the personality of your well-crafted living space, and the unique neighbourhood outside your door just waiting to be discovered. Wherever you make your home, Domicile’s expertly designed buildings will set you apart as an exceptional host. Hold a party on the rooftop terrace of one3one, overlooking Ottawa’s hip Wellington West. Invite friends to spend a leisurely weekend in the guest suite of The Glebe’s Second Avenue West, a feature unique to Ottawa condominium buildings. Celebrate a milestone by treating your family to a mouthwatering dinner in Ottawa’s Little Italy, just steps from The Radcliffe. Three state-of-the-art boutique buildings. Three reasons to simply love playing host.

from your memory and make them part of your everyday reality—and part of your backyard. Domicile homes are carefully located to accommodate your passions, from fitness to fine dining, live theatre to lingering evenings over a table for two. All of it is waiting for you. All of it is closer than you ever imagined. Choose to explore. Choose to reinvent. Choose to make a Domicile building your new nest, and make the next chapter of your life the most exciting one yet.

You would rekindle old love affairs. Remember the joy of an afternoon browsing one-of-a-kind shops? Or of hanging on a symphony’s last note, moments before thunderous applause? Or bicycling down a quiet, leafy pathway next to the canal? Mine these pleasures

Check your smoke alarm CITY OF OTTAWA Did you know that working smoke alarms can cut your chances of dying in a fire by 50 per cent? In Ontario, having working smoke alarms is not only a good idea -- it’s the law. Ottawa Fire Services recommends you

install a smoke alarm on every level of your home, and outside your sleeping areas. Test your smoke alarms every month and change the batteries twice a year when you change your clocks. A working smoke alarm and a home fire escape plan will significantly increase your chances of surviving a fire.

The Kanata Cubs 1 Senior Team won the A Side Championship for District 2 and 8 for the spring season. They won the game against the Pinecrest Patriots on Thursday, June 24 with a score of 10-9. The game was down to the bottom of the last inning when Kanata managed to score the winning run to claim the championship. The team had to battle back from a fourrun deficient earlier in the game and managed to narrow the gap and come out ahead. The players would like to thank their coaches for a great season and all of their parents for their support and cheers.

Pinhey’s Point will host the first of its it’s weekly summer workshops for children on July 8: Colours of the Rainbow. Above, children enjoy a summer archaeology program at Pinhey’s Point last year.

Let your tots and toddlers show their true colours at Pinhey’s Point Historic Site this summer. On Thursday, July 8, Pinhey’s Point presents the first installment of a weekly July workshop for kids called Colours of the Rainbow. The charming 88-acre estate on the shore of the Ot613-221-6239 tawa River will likely inspire budding young artists and get their creative juices flowing. Whether your children are just learning about all the colours of the rainbow or are already fascinated by them, this workshop will be sure to please their colour palettes. Write us The hour-long program consists of several different at news@ activities designed to help participants learn about and yourkanata. gain a new appreciation for all the wonderful colours that exist around us. com Workshop coordinator Jillian Dakin said children will be encouraged to identify, combine and play with colours. By the end, Dakin said she expects participants will be able to grasp basic colour theory and use a colour wheel. To facilitate this, Dakin said she will be organizing a game of ‘I Spy’, a race, and a craft. Participants will also be able to tap into their emotions in order to understand how colours can affect mood. “We will discuss how colours make us feel,” said Dakin. “For example, the colour yellow makes me feel happy; the colour blue makes me feel sad.” Later on, things could get messy when food colouring and shaving cream are thrown into the mix. Dakin recommends that participants dress comfortably and be prepared to wear their works of art by the end of the day. Dakin said all activities are scheduled to take place indoors, unless the weather cooperates. Parents and other family members are also welcome to join in on the fun. The next WonderKids workshop will be held on Thursday, July 15. The theme is Farm Friends, with a focus on farm traditions, responsibilities and farm animals. WonderKids: Colours of the Rainbow takes place Thursday, July 8 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Pinhey’s Point Historic Site located at 270 Pinhey’s Point Rd., in Dunrobin. For children ages 2 to 4. Advanced registration is required. Admission is $6 per person or $15 per family. For more information or to register, please call 613832-4347 or visit Ottawa.ca/museums. 400199

Castlefrank ES wins national entrepreneurial award Castlefrank Elementary School had another moment of inspired invention this year. For the second year in a row, the Kanata public school has won a national entrepreneurial adventure program. Barbara Robertson’s Grade 8 class took first place in the enterprising spirit category of the BMO Financial Group Student Innovation Awards. This year’s win is for producing a film about the life of a Grade 8 student, titled iPods, Bubblegum and Homework. Every year, teacher Barbara Robertson asks her class come up with a project through the learning partnership’s regional entrepreneurial adventure program to teach students creative and innovative business skills. “The goal of this program is to provide authentic learning and business skills while providing a community service,” said Robertson shortly after the film was made. This year, the class of 27 students decided to create a documentary so people could see that not all teenagers deserve the bad rap they have. The 15-minute documentary features interviews with the students along with glimpses of their daily lives. “It’s to let people know who we really are and what we do,” said Skylar Skinkle, 14, during an interview last April. “We’re stereotyped. If a group of us go into the store down the street, we’re watched carefully because we’re around that age.” “It’s about our life in Grade 8,” said

Brooklyn Lewis, 13. “It shows who we actually are.” The students accepted the award on June 10, receiving a plaque and a cheque for $500 to be used at their discretion. The class voted to use the money to plant a tree at the back of the school. “There’s a need for shade at the back of the field,” said Andrew Canham, principal of Castlefrank Elementary. “So the students said, ‘You know what? Let’s do that.’” The students screened the film at Castlefrank Elementary during an evening event called A Night at the Oscars, charging parents and schoolmates for popcorn and the price of admission. We Make Your Vacation Dreams Come True!

Lansdowne proposal a good partnership for city. In the final vote, I voted for the partnership as I felt it was the most effective way to revitalize Lansdowne, including a stadium and public spaces, without a substantial cost to the city. I had spent much time going through the proposal, particularly the financial aspects. In November, I put forward a motion to change the payment schedule, which will provide about $1.6 million more in annual revenue to the city. This week, the Corporate Services Economic Development Committee received an economic development strategy prepared by a subcommittee, on which I was a member. There is a lot that can be done to strengthen Ottawa’s economy and I will continue to be an advocate for it. What a wonderful Canada Day we had in Kanata again this year! This event is entirely organized and run by volunteers with costs covered by sponsorships, donations and contributions from on site businesses. A big thank you to all of the volunteers who gave us such a great event.

MOTHERS....

CARD OF THANKS RORY BRADLEY

IF YOU ARE EXPECTING OR HAVE A NEW BABY

As you can appreciate, the past weeks have been a difficult time for us, but a time made bearable by the support we have received from family, friends and neighbours. The love you have expressed for Rory – and the kindness and compassion you have shown for those he left behind – have touched us deeply, and helped us through this most devastating time. Rory would have appreciated everything you have done for us, from offering a shoulder to cry on, food to keep us nourished and company when it was needed most. There are so many people to thank, beginning with my four pillars – Shelley Clarke, Susan Oliver, Donna Price and Jody Thomas. I can’t begin to list all that you did for us. We could not have made it through without you. We also want to thank the following businesses and individuals for their generosity and services: Jake’s Landscaping, Stittsville Pool and Spa, Dave White at Mementos, Pat Kelly of Bradley Kelly Construction, Dan Burnett of D&S Appliances, the Stittsville Legion, Stittsville Arena Staff, Rob Rafuse and Jeff Jerome, Guardian Angels and Sacred Heart High School and Karen Von Jagow. The players from the Stittsville Juveniles and Ottawa Senators Women’s hockey teams provided a fitting honour guard at Rory’s funeral, and the KGHA girls did a wonderful job as greeters. Thank you also to Peter Oliver and Deb Bradley for their moving eulogies, Mark Kelly for his endless hours of video editing, to Canon John Bridges for providing a special tribute, to Justin Sterling for taking over the wheel and being with us each day, to pall bearers John and Tom Bissonnette, Jim and Peter Oliver, Dave Waterhouse and Liam Maguire. On behalf of the entire Bradley and Leroux families, we say thank you for your support and kindness over the past weeks. We take comfort in knowing that Rory meant so much to so many people, and in knowing that we can continue to count on such a caring group of people.
