Destruction rains down on Campeau ‘They went on a rampage from one end of the street to the other’ JESSICA CUNHA KOURIER-STANDARD Campeau Drive was severely vandalized during the early morning hours of Sunday, Aug. 1. “It was after midnight,” said resident Joan Keegan, who awoke to find soil in the wheel wells of her son-in-law’s car. “They went on a rampage from one end of the street to the other.” Bell electrical box covers were thrown around, some of the boxes were knocked over and OC Transpo bus stop seats were detached from their base and heaved into the ditch at the side of the road, said Keegan. “We found it all in the morning,” she said. Residents along Campeau Drive have been pitching in setting things to rights. “People in the neighbourhood have been putting things back,” said Keegan.
Gardens and potted plants were ripped up, soil was thrown over peoples’ cars and shoved in the wheel wells of vehicles, she said. “This usually happens when schools out,” said Keegan. “Do you know what your children are doing after midnight?” She said she’s unsure whether or not the police and city have been called regarding the vandalism. NOT A NEW PHENOMENON Keegan said this sort of behavior is not new to the area and usually happens every summer during school holidays. She said one of the worst events took place four summers ago. “By the side of our house is a bus stop seat,” she said. “When the children were out of school they set fire to it and it melted to nothing. The asphalt is still showing signs where the fire was.” VANDALISM, SEE 4

A Kanata Knights player pushes past a member of opposing team, the Bell Warriors, to score a touchdown during Game 1 of Friday Night Tykes on Aug. 6 at the Kanata Recreation Complex. The National Capital Amateur Football Association (NCAFA) showcases the sport’s newest players at the event, which is for ages eight to 10. The goal of the evening is not to win, but to have every player get an equal chance on the field and really enjoy the game.
