Breakin’ his way into the finals Katimavik man moves on in So You Think You Can Dance Canada JESSICA CUNHA KOURIER-STANDARD Katimavik resident Christian “Cee” Ancheta is off to the finals of So You Think You Can Dance Canada (SYTYCDC). With flips, spins and freezes, Ancheta flew through the Toronto auditions on season three’s first audition episode, which aired Sunday, Aug. 15. “I always get nervous but something I always do is say a prayer and tell myself ‘Shake it out and come out with confidence,’” said Ancheta, an Earl of March Secondary School alumnus. “After the routine I felt amazing; in my head I killed it. So whether the judges liked it or not I felt good about what I did. And that’s seriously all that matters to me.” The judges liked what they saw, sending him straight through to the finals audition round with a much-

coveted boarding pass after his multi-style routine. “I practiced a lot of different styles,” said the 23-year-old. “I took lots of different style classes: contemporary, hip hop, jazz, popping, house, salsa. I almost forgot about my BBOYIN (breakdancing).” This was Ancheta’s second year auditioning for the show and he brought back a special piece of clothing from his season two audition; the unitard. “I trained every day in this one piece just for this time,” he said. “It was my image. I felt it brought a little life to the show so I had to keep it up. I loved it and I would probably do it again.” Ancheta said he spent a lot of time working on his dance steps in order to be ready for the auditions – although he freestyled most of his routine. “I feel I came more prepared this year since I didn’t think of doing it last minute,” he said. “It was all freestyle; I knew what I wanted to do but then I messed up my head slide and then just freestyled the rest. That’s what bboys do; I just knew I wanted to do a couple flips and freezes and then kill the beat. “Dance is my passion in life. It is in me forever.” The finals audition episode will air on Aug. 19, with the reveal of the top 20 finalists on Aug. 22. “You’re going to have to wait and see,” said Ancheta about the finals. “Dance to express not to impress, that way you’ll never be disappointed.” jessica.cunha@metroland.com

An Algonquin elder will be holding a special traditional tobacco offering, blessing and prayer for the Beaver Pond lands on Tuesday, Aug. 24. The night of the full moon, Albert DuMont, Algonquin elder, poet and community activist has invited the community to participate in the ritual. “We’ve had politicians, scientists and activists,” said Adam Caldwell who is actively involved in protecting the South March Highlands. “We want to get a different perspective. The Algonquin people have been in this land for many thousands of years. They’ve got such a unique perspective.” DuMont will be addressing the relationship humans have with the earth and how people have a duty as protectors and stewards of the planet. “It comes down to our relationship with the planet that we live on,” said Caldwell. The ceremony is a non-denominational celebration and perspecFILE PHOTO tive on the human relation to ecolA lone person stares out across the Beaver Pond. An Algonquin elder will be performing a ogy.

DEVELOPMENT A subdivision planned for the Beaver Pond lands will see 182 hectares of the woods demolished and 3,200 houses built by KNL Development Ltd., a partnership of developers Urbandale Corp. and Richcraft Homes. The developers agreed to preserve 40 per cent of the forest, which includes Trillium Woods. “KNL has a right to develop the lands,” said city solicitor Tim Marc at a public meeting about the development of the South March Highlands at the Mlacak Centre on July 15. “Let me be clear on this, the trees are going to come down.” Nothing will stop the development of the Beaver Pond lands, he said. But city council passed a motion last month preventing KNL from starting work on July 19 as originally planned, until the company completes a set of conditions, including a tree conservation plan, a detailed inventory of species at risk, more information about buffers used for natural environment areas and grading and drainage plans. ‘MAGICAL EXPERIENCE’ The offering, blessing and prayer will start at 7:30 p.m. but people must arrive around 7 p.m. in order to set up the ceremony, said Caldwell. BEAVER POND, SEE 5

“Without action and awareness, this land will be lost forever,” he said. “Really what were trying to underline is what’s going on here is it’s a microcosm of the issues the world over.” About 12,000 BC when the Ottawa Valley was at the bottom of the Champlain Sea, the South March Highlands was a significant sub-glacial island. There are indications that this area supported a thriving hunter-gatherer society, and today this area is just as rich in archeological potential as Gatineau Park, and contains significantly more biodiversity than Stony Swamp and even Mer Bleue,

People with disabilities will be able to vote independently in this fall’s municipal election thanks to a new technology being introduced for the first time in Ottawa. Voter Assist Terminals (VATs), which enable people with disabilities to mark their ballot privately and independently, do not count or store votes. They include high contrast touch screens, a zoom to enlarge type size, and tactile buttons marked with Braille. Other features include a sip/puff device, a rocker paddle, and an audio

function that allows voters to hear candidate choices through headphones. Throughout the week of Aug. 23 to 26, the public will be able to test the VAT in several locations across Ottawa: • Aug. 23: Ottawa City Hall and Carlingwood Shopping Centre. • Aug. 24: Bayshore and Place D’OrlÊans shopping centres. • Aug. 25: St. Laurent and Billings Bridge shopping centres. • Aug. 26: Rideau Centre. Alcohol and driving don’t mix well at any age It is official: as of Aug. 1, anyone aged 21 and under cannot have any alcohol in their system when getting behind the wheel. Previously, anyone who held a full G licence could have a blood alcohol level of up to 0.05. Following an announcement by the Ontario Transportation Minister and Mothers Against Drunk Driving on Monday morning, that number now only applies to drivers 21 and up. Young drivers who are caught with any alcohol in their system will face an immediate 24-hour suspension of their licence which could last up to 30 days with up to $500 in fines. According to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, the peak ages of drinking and driving are 19 to 21. New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Manitoba already have similar regulations in place. Some may argue that this new law is an example of ageism. Many young drivers are responsible and would be able to handle having a glass of wine and hitting the road responsibly later on. However, there are many who can’t. And that doesn’t just go for young drivers. Everyone handles their alcohol differently, depending on gender, weight, size, metabolism, etc. Over the years, countless police reports have come across the news desk about impaired driving. People of all ages, from teens to seniors, have been caught drinking and driving in Ottawa. What about the over21 population who can’t seem to handle their alcohol? Drinking and driving does not seem to be going away anytime fast. It remains a reality, often ending in tragedy. Perhaps limiting youths behind the wheel is just the beginning. It may not be a bad idea to start at the 16 to 21 demographic and work up from there. Alcohol and driving has never been a good mix.

To the editor: OC Transpo has denied equal access to persons with disabilities going to the Navan Fair. A shuttle service was provided by OC Transpo for people going to and from the fair. People using this shuttle were being charged regular transit fares and the shuttle ran every half hour. When I asked OC Transpo if regular urban fares would be charged to use ParaTranspo, I was told that the shuttle is a charter service and that those needing to use ParaTranspo would have to pay the Rural 2 Zone fare which is $9.50 (one way) or $19 return. ParaTranspo is funded by the city so why not include one ParaTranspo bus? I feel it is totally unacceptable that persons with disabilities including many seniors who must rely on ParaTranspo have not been included in the planning process. Catherine Gardner Nepean

LETTER

Saying goodbye, but not forgotten Open letter to the Governor General,

Your Excellency, once again, I write to you by means of an open letter. It is with sadness that I will see your term end, especially since the effort on behalf of our “Volunteer Veterans” has not resulted in any recognition. In April of 2007, I wrote to express how thrilled I was with the level of your activity as our Governor General. Your words were the fuel that encouraged me to continue looking for an honourable way by which all our troops, servicemen and servicewomen could be fully recognized for the act of “volunteerism.” Something each and everyone of them has fulfilled by dedicating a period of their lives, sometimes an entire career and even the supreme sacrifice in the service of Canada. Not since the end of WW II, (after March 1, 1947), has there ever been a

Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with the exception of the Volunteer Service Medal for Korea. At that time I also indicated that never had a Military Medal been directly attributed to Canadian Governor Generals. I had openly put forth the idea of the Volunteer Medal to be known as the Governor General’s Volunteer Service Medal (GGVSM). Since then, a GGVSM Petition was initiated in Parliament so Canadians could petition to our Government indicate their support to give honour and dignity to our medal-less Veterans. A very significant issue is the belief that Commonwealth countries hold to a specified period of retroactivity when it comes to Honours. Recently, in 2009, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth approved of the “Elizabeth Cross” and its issuance may be retroactive to as far back as 1948. Her Majesty also approved the Australian Defence Medal in 2006 and its period of retroactivity 61 years going

back to 1945. The Canadian Volunteer Service Medal for Korea was established in 1991 and was retroactive to the events of 40 years before. With the cessation of the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal (1947) thousands of Canadians that have voluntarily served in our nation’s military forces have never been honoured or recognized by way of a “Canadian” Volunteer Service Medal and I believe that the GGVSM is still a worthy endeavour to right that wrong. It has been my honour to participate in this effort, and I still hold fast to your belief that anything is possible especially when it comes to bringing about a way to remember our Veterans. City offers environmental grants CITY OF OTTAWA The City of Ottawa website has an environmental grants directory to help people who want to beautify their community through the planting of greenery or cleaning up debris. The directory helps groups to locate funding opportunities for a wide range of environmental projects. “Under the categories of ‘general environment’ and ‘school/park naturalization,’ there are a variety of city and external programs that may be able to assist a resident wanting to complete a greening project,” said a city official. The environmental grants directory increases awareness of different funding opportunities for different projects. This directory sorts funds available by project type. Sources of funding include groups like the Tree Foundation of Canada, Ducks Unlimited, the City of Ottawa and the Wildlife Habitat Fund. There are new funding opportunities being created each year so the directory is updated bi-annually to ensure that the most current information is available. In order to certify a person meets all the requirements, criteria and deadlines, the city website said it is best to contact each source to get the most up-to-date information. Funding programs change quickly and sometimes without notice, so be sure to collect all information that is available. For more information, visit www. ottawa.ca/residents/funding/enviro/

Jane Clarke, left, sits with her neighbours, Debbie Dooher and Margaret and Jim Bedford, along with their dog Charlie, in the court’s garden. Clarke spends a lot of her own time and resources maintaining and beautifying the area, said Margaret.

Kanata’s gorgeous greenspace Jane Clarke spends her spare time tending court garden JESSICA CUNHA KOURIER-STANDARD A sense of community; Longboat Court has it. Jane Clarke, a resident of the Kanata Lakes court for 17 years, spends a lot of her free time tending to the garden in the median of the road – which is owned by the city. “She’s the most humble person you’ll ever meet,” said her neighbour, Margaret Bedford, who has lived in the court for 16 years. “I’d like to see her recognized.” COG OF THE WHEEL Clarke, who works shift work at the Ottawa Civic Hospital as a nurse, can be seen working on the garden at all hours, said Bedford. “She comes out here in the muck,” said Bedford. “In the rain, 10 p.m. at night, her days off; whenever she has the time.” Clarke is quick to point out that she gets help from her neighbours with weeding, watering and mulching. “When we get the mulch, everyone comes out,” said Clarke. The city drops off mulch in the fall. “Our neighbours donate perennials and annuals. They help out a lot.” Although her neighbours agree that they help, they also agree that Clarke is the piece holding it all together. “She keeps us all organized,” said Deb-

bie Dooher, who lives across the court from Clarke. “The little bit that everybody does is so minimal compared to what she does,” said Bedford. “More neighbourhoods need more people like her.” Bedford’s husband Jim, agreed wholeheartedly. “She’s the cog of the whole wheel.” ENJOYMENT Clarke said she does it because she enjoys doing it. “It gets me out in the evening instead of sitting around at home,” she said. “To me it’s about the enjoyment.” Clarke started to spruce up the court’s median about four years ago with her former neighbour Elaine, who recently moved. It took them two entire summers to get rid of the dead and excess foliage, she said. Clarke said she learned a lot of what she knows about gardening from Elaine. “It builds community. It’s fun and everyone plays a part.” Tree branches were overgrown and had to be cut down, and there was dense green foliage everywhere which had to be cut back and cleared away in some places. “None of the other courts look like this,” said Margaret. Indeed, a quick walk around the area showed two court medians with trees and shrubbery – all overgrown and unkempt. Clarke receives no compensation from

the city for her own money put into the project. She said she was told at one point that she could submit receipts to the city for reimbursement under the green partnership program. However, the program was cancelled in 2008 by city council due to budget constraints, according to a city official. The pilot program provided funds for community greening projects on city property. “To me it’s not about the money,” said Clarke. “But there should be some money somewhere in the government.” The court median is city-owned. City officials did say that there are other funding opportunities for environmental projects to assist residents wanting to complete a greening project. TEACHING TOOL The children who live in the court learn a lot about the different plants that grow in the garden and have an area to run around and play in, said Clarke. “We’ve opened it up so the kids can play here.” Margaret said her young granddaughter learned and memorized her colours thanks to the garden where they took walks to look at the flowers. “We are so fortunate to live here,” she said. “It’s very special.” jessica.cunha@metroland.com

Carp air show moves to Ottawa NEVIL HUNT KOURIER-STANDARD Airplane enthusiasts will get an Ottawa show in 2010, but it won’t be in the west end. Because of financial difficulties, Air Show Ottawa cancelled last year’s Carp airport showcase and will not run an event this year either. The organizers hope to have planes back in the air above Carp in 2011. For the fifth year, another organization – Flightworks – will present the Classic Air Rallye on the grounds of the Canada Aviation and Space Museum at Rockcliffe Airport, on Aug. 28 and 29. This year’s highlights include: • A salute to the Westland Lysander aircraft. For the first time in 20 years anywhere in the world, three of these iconic aircraft will come together at the rallye. • A lineup of Second World Warera aircraft, bush planes and amphibians in the air and on static display. • The world’s most advanced fighter, the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter inside the aviation museum, where you can also fly the F-16 and F-18 cockpits and simulators. • Military re-enactors in Second World War uniforms and vehicles, including vehicles from the Canadian War Museum collection. • A tour of the aviation museum’s storage wing and see the treasures not normally on display. • Visit the displays and booths commemorating the centenary of Canada’s Navy. Organizers say pilots will make themselves available to talk to visitors. Admission to the site includes

entry to the Canada Aviation and Space Museum. Two-day admission to the event is $20 for adults, free for accompanied children under 12. Parking is free and the site is accessible by

Did you know that working smoke alarms can cut your chances of dying in a fire by 50 per cent? In Ontario, having working smoke alarms is not only a good idea -- it’s the law. Ottawa Fire Services recommends you install a smoke alarm on every level of your home, and outside your sleeping areas. Test your smoke alarms every month and change the batteries twice a year when you change your clocks. A working smoke alarm and a home fire escape plan will significantly increase your chances of surviving a fire.

Samuel Coyne is a journeyman of junior hockey. The 21-year-old has played for nine different teams in over his junior hockey career. Coyne started his hockey career when he was only five years old, living in Smiths Falls. He played for a variety of teams growing up including the Rideau St. Lawrence Kings and the Ottawa Valley Titans. He moved to Perth in Grade 8 and a few years later he was playing for the Perth Blue Wings. He said his favourite hockey memory to date was helping the Blue Wings win the Valley Division Championship. Unfortunately, Coyne’s junior career has not panned out the way he hoped. “My junior career has been a bit of a mess,” he said. “I had two major injuries, a torn MCL in my knee and a major separated shoulder with several torn ligaments. When I was younger I was predicted to a lot better than what I’ve done. In Titans I had back-toback seasons where I had 100 points.” Coyne said when he was growing he modelled his play after NHL superstar and power forward Eric Lindros, who also dealt with a number of serious injuries throughout his career. Coyne has been sidelined due to injury for a significant number of games over his junior hockey career and he said it often resulted in him being traded. Over his junior hockey career, Coyne has played for the Perth Blue Wings, Kanata Stallions, Brockville Braves, Smiths Falls Bears, Carleton Place Canadians, Gloucester Rangers, Bancroft Hawks, Kingston Voyageurs and the Ontario Hockey League’s Erie Otters. “I bet I have the biggest suitcase you could find,” he joked. The majority of his junior hockey career was played in the Central Junior Hockey

League (CJHL) where he played 122 games. He scored 38 goals and had 40 assists for 78 points over that time with 43 penalty minutes. The stumbling blocks Coyne has encountered have not deterred him from chasing after his dream. He intends to tryout for University of Ottawa’s team this fall, when he goes back to school to pursue a degree in marketing. Coyne plans to play for the Ottawa West Golden Knights in the EOJHL if tryouts with the university do not go as planned. “I had a lot of negative experiences with reaching some of my goals, but I still know I have the ability to play professional hockey and love the sport enough to pursue it,” he said. “I’ve been training really hard this summer and I think ill have a legitimate crack at making the team.” Coyne decided to return to school to increase his career options, in case his hockey career does not turn out the way he hopes it will. “I realise that in hockey all it takes is one bad shift and it can all be gone pretty quick,” he said. For the remainder of the summer, Coyne plans to continue training before tryouts start, while working at his family’s business, Coyne’s Maintenance, an asphalt repair company. He said that he is extremely excited to get back to playing hockey in the fall. “The junior career was a bit of a mess but I’m healthy and strong now and I’m ready for a fresh start,” he said. Despite the injuries, Coyne remained positive and said that his junior career has taught him valuable life lessons. “If you really want something you can’t lose faith that easily,” he said. “You have to keep battling for the things that are important to you. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket, but don’t give up on the things that you love, and I love hockey.”

FIRST REAL SIX STRING Call it a talent, an intuition or a gift, the Kanata musician was born to play guitar, a skill the nearly blind musician has nursed since the age of six. Haneman got his first real six string in the spring of ’93. The budding musician couldn’t read sheet music; he was blind in one eye and had 25 per cent vision in the other. Lucas learned to play by listening to a song and then plucking the strings of his Degas metal guitar to produce similar sounds, eventually memorizing his music. In 2003, Haneman helped create the Kanata rock band Eppiphane, a four-person group that included Lucas on guitar, lead singer Adam Kavanagh, bass guitarist Alex Mastronardi and Jiash Wu on drums. The band moved from house parties and school coffee houses

Guitarist Lucas Haneman will have to make room on his mantle for yet another trophy. The 23-year-old Kanata man won the second annual i Factor, a national musical competition for people with vision loss at the Canadian National Institute for the Blind’s Lake Joseph Centre in Muskoka, Ont. on Aug. 7. Haneman has won many awards and musical scholarships including the Robert D. Ball Memorial Scholarship (2009), the Oscar Peterson scholarship for jazz performance at Concordia University (2008) and the Ontario Independent Music Award (best blues song, 2008) for How to Dance, co-written and recorded with Elyssa Mahoney. Haneman was one of 10 musicians selected by an online audience who were brought out to the Lake Joseph Centre where they received musical and performance training from some of the top professional musicians in Canada from Aug. 4 to 8. The finalists competed for the i Factor crown during two rounds of live performances with commentary from celebrity judges, featuring Canadian Idol judge Farley Flex, singer and songwriter Shirley Eikhard and musician Terry Kelly. The grand prize was a chance to open for Juno-nominated singer and songwriter Kelly at a concert somewhere in Canada. “It was a life-changing four days,” said Haneman.

When he graduated from Earl of March Secondary School, Haneman was courted by university and college music programs in both the United States and Canada. Haneman graduated from Concordia with a fine arts degree with a specialization in jazz studies. FUTURE Haneman expects to keep busy this year, performing in three bands while working to form another. “Within the next year I’m going to get a band together, where I get to sing,” said Haneman. Meanwhile, the guitarist will perform

with the Lucas Haneman Quintet, which is producing an instrumental jazz album this September. He’s also working on two other albums, a folk/reggae/blues project with Montreal’s Robbie Sinclaire Band and Pull Me In, the first album produced by the Alyssa Mahoney and Lucas Haneman Band. But Haneman said he is most looking forward to his future as a lead singer and guitarist, fronting for the band he wants to form this year; he’s considering calling the group The Monocles or Blind Ambition. “It’s exciting – it’s sort of exhilarating,” he said. “I feel more directly connected to the audience. It’s that feeling of having a more direct impact on what

people are feeling.” Haneman compared his singing style to Eric Clapton and the front men for Radiohead and the Dave Matthews Band. Haneman said he will also keep busy offering guitar lessons from his home in Kanata. Haneman will perform during the following dates this month: • Aug. 21: Lucas Haneman and Alyssa Mahoney, PJ Quigley’s Bar and Grill, 250 Greenbank Rd., 7 p.m. • Aug. 23: sitting in with the group Search Engine, Le Petite Chicago, 59 Prom. BAR TALK Kealey said the idea for the tour was born during a chance meeting of two of his friends at a bar in Guangzhou. Frank Levine, the co-producer of Kealey’s first album, ran into Rob Turnbull, another old friend, and their conversation naturally steered to Kealey. Turnbull, who manages Hooleys, an Irish bar in Guangzhou, called Kealey and offered to book him a tour in May, starting at Hooleys. China was a bit of a culture shock for Kealey. Even simple things like crossing the street presented a challenge, he said. “It’s like a game of chicken,” Kealey said. “If you don’t go (cars aren’t) slowing down for you.” Food and lodging are cheaper in China than Canada, he said. For instance, a bottle of beer costs $1 and a really expensive hotel room goes for about the same rate as a mid-range hotel room in Canada, said Kealey. During his tour Kealey judged a battle of the bands, which featured groups of western expatriates, Filipino and Chinese musicians, including a Chinese Hank Williams cover band, called Jambalaya. “The guy even had the Hank Williams inflections down,” said Kealey. Rock music is popular in China, he said, with bands performing covers of the Eagles, Michael Jackson and the Beatles. “There’s a lot of western music,” Kealey said. “Like pop music – pop, rock music that people enjoy listening to.” Kealey remembers performing a cover of Hey Jude at a bar and hearing a Chinese girl in the audience singing along two octaves higher. Kealey isn’t the first Ottawa musician to tour China; he follows in the footsteps of local musicians Peter Voith and Hollerado. Kealey released a five-song CD,

Performing in front of an audience who can’t speak English is a challenge, said blues/jazz/pop pianist and singer Tyler Kealey. It’s difficult to form a relationship with an audience without a little banter in between songs, said the Kanata native, who recently returned from a month-long tour of China, where he performed 11 shows, starting in Guangzhou in May. Kealey performed his first show at Hooley’s, Irish Pub & Restaurant in Guangzhou with an audience of mostly western expatriates, allowing the musician to ease into the tour. “The second and third show it was more of a Chinese show so you lose that communication you have with the audience,” Kealey said. “So you can’t talk that much off the microphone – you can’t rely on those things.” But there were positives lurking behind the language barrier, he added. “The Chinese audience was more intent on listening,” said Kealey. At the end of one set at a bar in Xi’an, Kealey was surrounded by dozens of admirers who wanted to purchase his CDs. “We had to run back to the hotel and get more CDs because we were selling them out,” Kealey said. “People were explaining in broken English how much they like the CDs.” The CD sales and the tour covered the travel costs of Kealey and his girlfriend; and in between shows the couple toured the cities, visiting the Great Wall of China and they went to see the Terracotta Warriors. The 29-year-old musician grew up in Katimavik and attended Holy Trinity Catholic High School. He performs at the Brookstreet Hotel (the occasional Friday, starting Sept. 24) in Kanata and at Fat Tuesdays (Saturday nights) in downtown Ottawa, with Dave Kalil. “Most people who go to Fat Tuesday’s call us the dueling piano

show,” said Kealey. “We can pretty much do anything from Elton John to Eminem to CCR, the Beatles and even stuff like some hip hop.”

Kanata Theatre puts focus on clash of sexes ROBYN PEKARCHUK KANATA THEATRE What do you get when you mix a pregnant woman, a classic battle of the sexes, a brothel full of headstrong women, a government investigated scheme, Horton and the Whos and a few good men? You get the show lineup for the upcoming 2010-2011 season of Kanata Theatre.

The season will feature some fantastic shows that will have you roaring with laughter and crying with joy. A common thread throughout the season is a definite clash of the sexes. So go ahead and pick a side of the gender fence, come out and join us to see who wins. • Having Hope at Home: by David S. Craig and directed by Alain

Chamsi. This play is a charming tale of a young woman pregnant with her first child and intending to have a home birth with a midwife present for delivery. Her father, however, has an opposing view and tries to instill his ideas of modern medicine and the benefits of a hospital. • Taming of the Shrew: by William Shakespeare and directed by Jim Holmes. This piece is the clas-

sic Shakespearean comedy about war of the genders. • Jenny’s House of Joy: by Norm Foster and directed by Jon Alkan. Jenny’s House is the story of a Midwestern brothel staffed by four ladies that brawl, bawl and will touch your hearts. • Cash on Delivery: by Michael Cooney and directed by Rosemary Keneford. This play is a madcap farce involving identity theft, scamming the government for security cheques and all the mayhem that ensues when trying to cover it up. • A Few Good Men: by Aaron Sorkin and directed by Shelagh Mills. This piece is the dramatic courtroom story of two marines caught in the midst of another marine’s death. The question is, who will emerge as the few good men? • This year’s holiday treat is

Seussical, based on the works of Dr. Seuss and directed by Andrew Williams. A funtastical musical for all ages. Magical, fun, and all that is Dr. Seuss. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to pick a side of the gender fence all season long with a 20102011 season subscription. If you would like to see what it’s like to be on the other side of the footlights and be a part of theatre action, get involved and become a member of Kanata Theatre. For further information please call the box office at 613-8314435 or visit the website at www. kanatatheatre.com. Or feel free to visit the box office at 1 Ron Maslin Way, just off Terry Fox Drive in Kanata. No matter what side of the gender fence you’re on, Kanata Theatre has got something in store for you.

Kanata hopeful for bobsleigh team

SPEED AND POWER Cleary, who has a bachelor of arts from Carleton University, is a brakeman – he has 50 metres to push his bobsleigh into a competitive position at the start and must break the sled at the end. “You have to get it moving pretty quick,” he said. Breakers have about five seconds to get their sleigh going as fast possible – reaching speeds of over 40 kilometres an hour. “Without a competitive start – at least within a tenth of a second of the fastest crew – a

medal finish is next to impossible,” said the Bobsleigh Canada website. Cleary said there’s nothing like the rush of hurtling down the track. “I think it’s a great sport in terms of speed and power,” he said. “But once you get the sled going on the track it’s quite an adrenaline rush.” OCTOBER The national teams will be chosen in October. “October is when they have another camp and from there they have selection races,” said Cleary. There will be six or seven national teams, he said. “It would mean quite a bit,” said Cleary if he’s chosen. “I’m just trying to train hard and get my test results.” He hasn’t given much thought as to whether he would train to compete in the next Winter Olympics. “I’d like to but I think it’s too far away to think about that now,” he said. “Take it one step at a time I guess.” The most difficult part of competing is the funding necessary, said Cleary. “Once you’re on the team there’s only a few days until you leave. You have to find sponsors for that.” People interested in sponsoring Cleary for the 2010-11 season can reach him at andrewmatthewcleary@gmail.com. “The competition, and obviously if I was successful, doing something to represent your country is probably the best part,” he said. jessica.cunha@metroland.com

Kanata’s Andrew Cleary is a potential candidate for the Canadian National Bobsleigh team this year. Cleary, 27, will be heading back to Calgary this month to partake in a national training camp where participants are rated on everything from sprinting speed to weight lifting. “It’s pretty rough compared to what it looks like on television,” he said about the sport. “You get banged around a lot. You have to build up some courage to go down. The first time I was pretty nervous but you get used to it.” The former hockey player only started participating in bobsledding in March of this year. “A lot of people come from other sports,” said the Earl of March Secondary School graduate. “They make the transition over. The goal is to get more people into the program.”

Hole-in-one for breast cancer fundraiser JESSICA CUNHA KOURIER-STANDARD Many people’s lives are touched by cancer in one way or another: a spouse, a child, a relative, a friend. Around 1,200 women in the Ottawa region are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. And for the past 18 years, the Ladies Golf Classic has been raising money to provide these women with informational and inspirational booklets to help them through the ordeal. “I don’t think people realize how many women in our community get diagnosed each year,” said Juliette Hillock, this year’s co-chair for the Ladies Golf Classic. “My mother is a breast cancer survivor. My mom had breast cancer in 1999. “There are a number of breast cancer survivors that attend and participate in the tournament, which is really great.” Her mother is a survivor, having been in remission for a number of years now. “It’s close to my heart as well in terms of why I’m doing it,” said Hillock about helping organize the event. In its 19th year, the Ladies Golf Classic has raised over $250,000 for the booklets. Last year, the event raised $12,000, a number Hillock said she is expecting to surpass this year. “Any of the funding that we raise either through sponsorship money or at the actual tournament goes to the Ottawa Hospital’s Woman’s Breast Health Centre (WBHC),” said Hillock. “All the

money is used to create a guide for breast cancer patients that has a number of tools and inspirational items in it for breast cancer patients to help them through their road to recovery. The guide helps a few thousand women every year.” Many women battling the disease have found the book helpful. “The book was a godsend,” wrote Laurie Schrier in a testimonial. “I keep reading everyone’s experiences over and over to give me strength. I wrote all my appointments and kept all my results in it until I ran out of room. I brought it with me to all my appointments. “I still have it hidden away in a drawer like a security blanket that you don’t want to give up. And when I feel anxious I know that it is there if I need it. Thank you to everyone one at the Women’s Breast Health Centre. Without all their kindness and support I am not sure I would have made it through those first four months.” The 2010 Ladies Golf Classic will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 24. starting at 9 a.m. at the Kanata Golf and Country Club, located at 7000 Campeau Dr., Kanata. Registration fees are $150 and include breakfast, 18 holes, dinner and charitable tax receipt for $20. For more information or to register for the tournament, visit www.ladiesgolfclassic.ca or you can email Hillock at infoladies@ladiesgolfclassic.ca. “It’s a very fun day,” said Hillock. “It’s very rewarding for us to see.” jessica.cunha@metroland.com

KANATA RHYTHMIC SPORTIVE GYMNASTICS CLUB The Kanata Rhythmic Sportive Gymnastics Club (KRSG) earned a spot on the Canadian team at the World Gymnaestrada in Lausanne, Switzerland next year. The team, consisting of gymnasts from ages 10 to 23, was awarded the coveted spot after performing at the Canadian Gymnaestrada in Winnipeg this past July. Also performing and gaining a place at the World Gymnaestrada were the KRSG’s adult group, coached and managed by three time provincial rhythmic gymnastics champion Sharon Fryer. Competitors added an extra four hours of practice time to their overall gym time – which ranges from four hours a week for interclub individuals to over 18 hours, depending on the competition level for national and provincial gymnasts. The team included girls who are in their first year of advanced training in rhythmic gymnastics as well as those attending their third Canadian Gymnaestrada, truly meeting the aim of the competition of participation and inclusion.

Their Viva rope routine was well received by the judges from the Canadian and International gymnastics federations and the audience of over 2,000 fans at the Athletic Centre at the University of Manitoba. The team was honoured by being selected to perform at the closing ceremonies. The Kanata Rhythmic Gymnastics Club had the largest number of participants from Ontario at the Canadian Gymnaestrada. The 800 participants, ranging in age from 10 to 86 showcased the many aspects of gymnastics, and the health benefits of participation in gymnastics in a variety of routines. One routine told the story of Noah’s ark using gymnastic skills such as tumbling and lifting, and another focused on the history of Saskatchewan. During the spectacular event, judges selected teams to represent Canada at the World Gymnaestrada. KRSG will be participating in its third World Gymnaestrada next year, having previously attended the event in Austria in 2007 and Portugal in 2003.

Young soccer players flock to Beckwith Park A soggy soccer tournament didn’t stop Eastern Ontario players from enjoying their time in Beckwith on Aug. 14 and 15. Teams gathered at Beckwith Park and Notre Dame Catholic High School in Carleton Place on Saturday and Sunday to compete in the annual Mississippi Invitational Soccer Tournament. Tournament co-ordinator Nora Kazda said the tournament, featuring boys’ teams from Ottawa, Lanark County and Smiths Falls, Belleville, Kingston and Toronto, was a success, despite questionable weather on Sunday. “For sitting (on Sunday), I am sure it was miserable but the players enjoyed playing in the rain,” said Kazda. “But there was a lot of shoveling water out of the goal creases.” The gold medal winners from each age

group were: • U9: Cumberland Cobras • U10: CP Lanark United • U11: Goulbourn Gladiators • U12: Cumberland Cobras • U13: CP Lanark United • U14: Cumberland Cobras • U15/16: Darlington Strikers of Toronto. Games of the older players and gold medal matches were on the new turf field at Beckwith Park, which Kazda said presented another challenge – anyone not used to playing on artificial turf would notice the ball bouncing more and rolling farther. “It was just a different game,” she said. “I think it made things more interesting.” Kazda said the annual tournament brings a number of people to the area, which was evident by the lineups at Tim Hortons and other restaurants and shops. katie.mulligan@metroland.com

Local Kanata girl makes Team Ontario U16 Baseball Team for the second year. Lindsay Cook, who played last year for Team Ontario, headed to the bronze medal game at the Canadian Championships in Toronto and came just a little short, losing 11-10. This year, not only has she made Team Ontario again, she was fortunate to also get invited to play in the Woman’s Canadian Championship in Toronto as well. This was truly a great experience as she played against women ages 18 to 38 years old. Players were picked from this tournament to represent Team Canada and she saw the caliber it takes to represent this team. This years’ Team Ontario championship will be held in Richmond, B.C. from August 25 to August 30. She is so excited. Lindsay would like to thank her sponsors which contributed to help make her dream come true and most of all her family for all their support.

Have you always wondered how people get into Sears catalogues, Zellers flyers, McDonalds TV commercials, movies, magazine ads, music videos and more? It’s no secret – many of those people got their start by attending a StarCast Search. The film and advertising industry is booming. Scouting all looks, shapes, sizes and ethnicities. 5 years and up. Experience not required.

A former St. Pius X High School teacher has been charged with indecent assault. Father Kenneth O’Keefe was arrested August 11 in Toronto and appeared later that afternoon in the Ontario Court of Justice. Charges were laid after an investigation into a complaint of inappropriate behaviour between the priest and a student. Liam Maguire, a former student, had Fr. O’Keefe as an English teacher for Grades 10 and 11. He said he couldn’t believe the accusations. “He was an outstanding teacher, very gregarious, Maguire said. “I’m not suggesting – by any means – that whoever the student is, is making it up but you’re just hopeful that maybe it’s not 100 per cent factual. Fr. O’Keefe’s alleged inappropriate behaviour occurred during the early 70’s – nearly 40 years ago. The historic assault was the around the same time another priest accused of indecent assault – Fr. William Joseph Allen – occurred. “In the span of four/five weeks, we hear of two priests from the era that myself and my brothers were (at St. Pius), it was quite disconcerting, Maguire said. “Since I had the teacher, I find it even more disturbing to hear the allegations. Fr. O’Keefe taught at St. Pius X until June 1980, when he stopped teaching at high schools and left Ottawa.

College Coun. Rick Chiarelli attended St. Pius X high school and encountered Fr. O’Keefe in the hallways. Chiarelli declined to comment on the allegations directly but admitted to knowing the priest. “I knew him, I knew him very well actually,â€? said Chiarelli. “I actually knew both of them very well.â€? Maguire remembers O’Keefe as a good teacher who pushed him to do better in school. One vivid memory of the priest was getting a test handed back with a perfect score. “I was sat right in the very back of the class and he walked up to me and handed me the paper,â€? he said. “He did it in such a dramatic fashion, the kids all started clapping ‌ I think it was somewhat based on that he thought I should look at an enriched program.â€? The Archbishop of Ottawa, Terrance Prendergast, pledged the continued support of the community with Ottawa police. “On learning about the criminal charges against Fr. O’Keefe, C.S.B., a Basilian Father who was a high school teacher in our diocese in the 1970’s, I want to advise the community that our offices cooperated with the Ottawa police service in the investigation,â€? he said in a press release. “I pledge our continuing cooperation.â€? The Catholic school board refused to offer any comments on the matter. O’Keefe’s next court appearance is Sept. 1. jamie.doggart@metroland.com

CITY OF OTTAWA Members of the Kanata Seniors Centre enjoy an afternoon of cards on Wednesday, Aug. 4. BLAIR EDWARDS PHOTO

TERRY FOX UPDATE – I toured the construction site with city staff, recently and was able to travel the entire length of the road. The section from Goulbourn Forced Road to Second Line Road, together with the extension of the Second Line to Terry Fox Drive, and the section from Kanata Avenue to Richardson Side Road are scheduled to open by the end of this year. The remainder will be completed early next year. The section of the Richardson Side Road from Kanata Avenue to Terry Fox Drive will remain closed for safety reasons. A group that wishes to halt the Terry Fox Extension has initiated a court action that will be heard on Sept. 13. It is not expected that they will succeed as the city has met all requirements and obtained all necessary permits. FALL CLEANING THE CAPITAL – Thank you to all the residents who continue to undertake activities to beautify our communities. Join in the upcoming Fall Cleaning the Capital program where groups and individuals sign up to clean up areas of their communities. Visit the city website for clean up supplies and a chance to win prizes: http://ottawa.ca/residents/environment/community/capitalcleaning/index_en.html.

Peggy Feltmate Kanata South BRIDLEWOOD SPLASH PAD OPEN FOR FUN – It was great to open Bridlewood’s first splash pad last week. The splash pad is in Bluegrass Park off Bridgestone Drive. It will be operating between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. The number of families there for the opening was a reminder of how much the splash pad is needed. As soon as the splash pad opened it was filled with children. With a new recreation facility, there are sometimes questions about whether the facility will benefit the community. For anyone watching children having fun at the splash pad, the answer to those questions was a definite yes.

CANADIAN FEDERATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN KANATA The Canadian Federation of University Women/Kanata are proud to announce that they have presented seven $1,000 scholarships to female high school graduates living in Kanata, Stittsville and West Carleton. Stephanie Cherry, an Earl of March graduate, was a member of the concert band for four years, did a co-op at a local corporate law firm, volunteered at several sporting events and participated in the Model United Nations. Besides tutoring in French, she also held a part-time job. Cherry will be attending the University of Ottawa for a Joint Honours B.A. in lin-

guistics and psychology. Gabriela Carbo, of All Saints Catholic High School, must be congratulated for being on the honour roll for her four years in high school. Carbo participated in a Dominican Republic experience where she travelled to the Dominican for a humanitarian program after outstanding fundraising for necessities in the country. She also volunteered at a kid’s church camp. We wish her every success at McGill University where she will be studying for her Bachelors in international development studies. Vitalie Nyembwe, a graduate from Holy Trinity C.H.S., enjoyed tutoring, swim team and social justice events.

In the community she participated in competitive swimming, competitive dance, Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest and the Ottawa International Children’s Festival. This fall she will attend the University of Toronto in mental health studies. In world issues, Charlotte Nahon-Rura, from A.Y.Jackson H.S., did a project on the Darfur Genocide. Learning about this disheartening occurrence, she decided to present it in her international business class. The result was Mission Possible: Darfur, a global leadership project where the class raised funds and awareness of the genocide. She has been accepted at Concordia University for communication studies.

Clean up the capital city campaign starts in fall CITY OF OTTAWA Residents of all ages are invited to join the city’s annual Cleaning the Capital Fall Campaign that runs from Sept. 15 to October 15. Cleaning the Capital is a great opportunity for high school students to add to their community involvement program volunteer hours and for families and friends to work together on community cleanup projects that help make Ottawa clean, green, graffiti-free, and litter-free. It’s easy to get involved. Pick a cleanup location; for the fall, cleanup efforts are encouraged in areas where litter has accumulated such as a park, woodlot, ravine, shoreline, bus stop, pathway, schoolyard or any public property requiring tidying up.

Suggested spots to target include along fence lines, in open spaces with tall grass, along trails, and around drainage ditches and catch basins. While cleaning up open areas that are maintained and mowed by the city such as in our parks, please don’t pick up the leaves, as they will be mulched by city staff to return their nutrients to the soil. Register your cleanup project on or before Sept. 14 to be eligible to win early bird prizes. Registration continues until October 15. Cleaning the Capital volunteers who submit their online Cleanup Reports by Oct. 31 are also eligible to win one of many prizes donated by our generous sponsors. For more information and to register, visit ottawa.ca/clean or call 311 (TTY 613-580-2401).
