Arsonist torches Glen Cairn car, home ‘We’re just lucky we didn’t go back asleep’: homeowner BLAIR EDWARDS KOURIER-STANDARD Seth dodged a bullet last weekend – a bullet that could have killed his entire family. The Glen Cairn man woke up in the early hours of Saturday, Aug. 21, to discover someone had torched his car parked in the driveway of his home on Country Lane. The blaze quickly spread to the house, as Seth and his wife gathered their children and fled to a neighbour’s house. A gasoline jerry can was later found near the destroyed car – the Ottawa police arson unit believes someone poured gasoline over the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe and lit it. Detectives who canvassed the street later learned that someone had broken into three sheds on Country Lane the morning of the fire – the jerry can belonged to a neighbour four houses down the street from Seth’s home.

“Somebody coming down our street picked through some sheds and found some gas,” said Seth, who asked that his last name be witheld. Police believe the fire was arson. DODGED A BULLET Seth and his wife were sleeping, when they heard a loud noise outside at around 5 a.m. on Saturday morning. “It was like a bang sound,” said Seth. “We’re just lucky we didn’t go back asleep.” At first the couple thought their fiveyear-old son might have fallen out of bed. Then they looked outside the window and saw the problem. Their car was on fire. Seth called 911 and then he and his wife grabbed their son and eightmonth-old daughter and ran to a neighbour’s house. CAR FIRE, FROM 1

“We didn’t know our house was on fire at that point,” said Seth. “”But our car was on fire.” The fire – the car was parked in the driveway – quickly spread to the side of the house, moving up the eaves trough and underneath the roof to the attic. Firefighters arrived within minutes of the 911 call. The car was engulfed in flames, but firefighters ignored the vehicles and concentrated first on putting out the house fire. “The fire was contained to the exterior of the building so it never got inside,” said Marc Messier, spokesperson for the Ottawa fire department. A fire marshall later told Seth that it was “a matter of a minute” before the fire would have spread inside the house. “We dodged a bullet,” said Seth. The 16 firefighters at the scene put the house and vehicle fires out at 5:26 a.m.

The Ottawa fire department estimates the fire caused $30,000 in damage to the car and house – but Seth said it will cost $25,000 alone to replace his vehicle. “The entire car’s a writeoff,” he said. The Glen Cairn family also lost some clothing and camping equipment that were destroyed in the vehicle fire. No one was injured and Seth and his family were allowed to return to their home after firefighters had put out the blaze. The vehicle fire is the fourth case of suspected arson in Kanata this summer – the arson unit is investigating a fire set to a housing development in Bridlewood last May, a fire set in a classroom at Georges Vanier Catholic School in Beaverbrook this month and a suspicious fire at a restaurant in the Kanata Centrum on Aug. 26. None of the fires are believed to be connected, said Const. Kathy Larouche, a spokesperson for the Ottawa police. blair.edwards@metroland.com

Algonquin elder leads prayer for Beaver Pond An Algonquin elder held a special tobacco offering, blessing and prayer for the South March Highlands last week. Nearly 100 people gathered at the Beaver Pond for the special ceremony the night of a full moon on Wednesday, Aug. 24. “We’ve had politicians, scientists and activists,” said Adam Caldwell who is actively involved in protecting the South March Highlands. “We want to get a different perspective. The Algonquin people have been in this land for many thousands of years. They’ve got such a unique perspective.” Albert DuMont, a poet and elder in residence of Iskotew Lodge, Health Canada, carefully prepared the fire with pieces of bark and

dead wood carefully arranged over pieces of stone next to the Beaver Pond. Dumont dropped tobacco into the “sacred fire” representing prayers delivered into the spirit world, he said. The forest is a sacred place, he said, and the rocky landscape has endured unchallenged for thousands of years – the Beaver Pond lands is the only land mass in the Ottawa-area that never fell underneath the waters of the Champlain Sea. “I’d hate to see it go away,” he said. “It’s that rocky landscape that would be dynamited. “It’s withstood everything, but is it going to withstand Urbandale Homes?” asked Dumont. “It’s a sorry (thing) that things of money would ruin it.” KNL Development Ltd., a part-

Urbandale wants to start work on a 3,200-home housing development. But city council passed a motion put forward by Kanata North Coun. “The initial intent was for Albert to go out there and in the traditional way to make prayers for the land,” said Caldwell. “It sort of morphed into a situation where we decided we wanted to get the community involved in order to have everyone come out and essentially be there for the forest and reflect on the importance of ecology and reflect on why it is the community is fighting for this forest and indeed all forests that are endangered around the planet.” With files from Jessica Cunha Blair.edwards@metroland.com

Bay Coun. Alex Cullen officially dropped out of the mayor’s race at a press conference on Aug. 31. Cullen sited dwindling campaign funds and a desire to unseat Terry Kilrea as the top spot in Bay ward. some of the candidates in the ward to let them know he was going to be seeking reelection. Mark Taylor calls the move suspicious. “I think it was kind of like a Jedi mind trick to get people to drop out of the race, well it won’t work on me,” he said. “I think it’s very hard to believe anything he (Cullen) says. In January he said he wasn’t going to run. Now he won’t commit to not running in the provincial election, which could cost taxpayers the money for a by election.” Terry Kilrea sent out a press release with much the same message. While Kilrea sympathized with Cullen — saying he shouldn’t have to go in to debt like Kilrea did after the 2006 election, the public should question his motives.

“Cullen will not rule out running in Provincial election in 2011 for NDP in Ottawa Centre and is registering in BayWard once again to be Councillor,” he said in the release. “Being elected is an honour and privilege. A candidate should commit for 4 years the term lasts and if only running to bail in 2011 is really not proper and will cost about $500,000 of taxpayer’s money.” Other candidates are: Ike Awgu, George Guirguis, G.J. Hagenaars, Peter Heyck, Oni Joseph, Terry Kilrea, Erik Olesen, Greg Ross, Shawn Little and Mark Taylor. With 10 other candidates in the crowded Bay race, Cullen has his work cut out for him. “I won’t take my competition for granted,” he said. jennifer.mcintosh@metroland.com

Did you know that working smoke alarms can cut your chances of dying in a fire by 50 per cent? In Ontario, having working smoke alarms is not only a good idea -- it’s the law. Ottawa Fire Services recommends you install a smoke alarm on every level of your home, and outside your sleeping areas. Test your smoke alarms every month and change the batteries twice a year when you change your clocks. A working smoke alarm and a home fire escape plan will significantly increase your chances of surviving a fire.

OTTAWA POLICE SERVICE Ottawa police will be focusing on school bus and school zone safety, as well as tailgaters, in September as part of the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP). Over the past five years, 39 collisions occurred on Ottawa roads involving school bus traffic control violations, resulting in 15 injuries – one of which involved a schoolage child exiting the school bus. The penalties for a driver passing a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing include fines ranging from $400 to $2,000 and six demerit points for a first offence. A second offence yields the driver a fine between $1,000 and $4,000, six demerit points and a possible jail sentence of up to six months. Penalties may not be limited to the driver. The vehicle owner may also be charged for school bus traffic control violations, with fines ranging from $400 to $2,000. Police officers are not required to witness the vehicle passing a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing in order to lay charges against the vehicle owner. Citizens who witness such occurrences can contact the police and provide the make, model and colour of vehicle; license plate number; location, date and time of the incident; and, if possible, a description of the driver. In 2009, tailgating caused 4,973 rear-end collisions – the most frequent type of collision accounting for one-third of Ottawa’s total collisions. These collisions resulted in one death and 1,373 injuries – 17 of them life-threatening. Each month since 2004, STEP has been profiling and enforcing two initiatives that target specific traffic safety priorities. These initiatives support the larger Integrated Road Safety Program (IRSP) public awareness and enforcement campaigns. In 2003, two city departments – Public Works and Ottawa Public Health – and the police developed the IRSP to provide a comprehensive approach in promoting road safety. Ottawa residents have identified traffic safety as a top priority.

OPINION EDITORIAL

LETTER

An electrifying idea

Stand up for veterans

A handful of people waited in Allan Poulsen’s driveway last week for the arrival of Sparky, the next generation of all-electric-powered cars. But you know the saying. Big things come in small packages — in this case, big events attract small gatherings. The electric car is nothing new, but it was exciting to see one of the first mass-produced electric vehicles roll into Beaverbrook on Aug. 26. Currently, Poulsen is one of only a handful of Ottawa residents who drive an all-electric car. According to Poulsen there are only six such owners in the city. But the introduction of Sparky and its iMiEV brethren promises to increase that number for many reasons. First, the car is affordable — the vehicle sells for between $30,000 to $40,000, according to Mitsubishi Motors, the manufacturer of the car. Second, the car company will provide trained technicians to work on the car in case it ever breaks down — what use is a car if you don’t have anyone to fix it if it breaks down? The key to the success of this vehicle will depend on serviceability and constant improvements to the battery that powers it. We’ve already seen a move from acid based batteries to the modern and more efficient lithium ion batteries. The success of the car will also depend on how quickly shopping centres and other commercial centres embrace the new technology by providing industrial size charging stations. An industrial charger can charge a car to 80 per cent capacity in less than an hour, compared to the 14 hours required to fully charge an iMiEV using a standard 100-volt plug. Yes, we know, a lot of ifs. But the development of an affordable and convenient electric car will one day mean considerably less reliance on vehicles that depend on fossil fuels. We can’t think of a better way to reduce our carbon footprint and improve air quality in Canada. Hopefully, we’ll see more and more electric cars on the highway over the coming decade.

To the editor: As an Afghanistan veteran I am thoroughly disgusted by the Harper government’s disrespectful treatment of the veterans ombudsman, retired Col. Pat Stogran and I am absolutely outraged of the disregard that has been paid to Canadian Forces personnel who have suffered physical and mental injuries during their tours of service. Pat Stogran is being forced out the door by the Harper government for his outspoken criticism of the government not doing enough for Canadian veterans. Each time an IED kills one or two soldiers, it also maims several more. To date, more than 150 Canadians have lost their lives in Afghanistan. Hundreds more suffer debilitating injuries only for having done their duty on behalf of our country and government. LETTERS, SEE 7

Motorists should keep an eye out for school buses To the editor: Ottawa police will be focusing on school bus and school zone safety, as well as tailgaters, for September’s selective traffic enforcement program (STEP). In 2009, tailgating caused 4,973 rearend collisions – the most frequent type of collision accounting for one-third of Ottawa’s total collisions. These collisions resulted in one death and 1,373 injuries – 17 of them lifethreatening. School zone and school bus safety are also serious issues. Over the past five years, 39 collisions occurred on Ottawa roads involving school bus traffic control violations, resulting in 15 injuries – one of which involved a school-age child exiting the school bus. The penalties for a driver passing a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing include fines ranging from

$400 to $2,000 and six demerit points for a first offence. Citizens who witness such occurrences can contact the police and provide the make, model, colour of vehicle; license number; location, date and time of the incident; and, if possible, a description of the driver. Each month since 2004, STEP has been profiling and enforcing two initia-

BLAIR EDWARDS KOURIER-STANDARD The Ottawa police arson unit is investigating the scene of a fire at a fast food restaurant in the Kanata Centrum early Friday morning, Aug. 26. Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after 3 a.m to find smoke billowing out the front door of Extreme Pita restaurant on Earl Grey Drive. Police are treating the fire as suspicious as firefighters reported they found the front door to the restaurant broken open. “Someone saw something thrown through the window and

saw someone running away,” said Const. Kathy Larouche, a spokesperson for the Ottawa police. The fire caused $150,000 in damages. It took 20 minutes for a team of 33 firefighters to put out the fire. Two nearby businesses, First Choice Haircutters and the Bell Store sustained some minor smoke and water damage. blair.edwards@metroland.com The Ottawa police arson unit is investigating a fire at Extreme Pita in the Kanata Centrum that took place during the early hours of Aug. 27. We cannot let these fine Canadians down. We must stand up for them and ensure that they are afforded the very best care and support possible. We must have a dauntless Veterans Ombudsman to advocate for veterans and their families, one who is willing to tell the government the difficult truths it would rather not hear. I salute Col (ret’d) Pat Stogran for his integrity and courage.

Council sees the signs: digital given green light

9

JENNIFER MCINTOSH KOURIER-STANDARD Digital signs in the capital got the green light from council on Aug. 24 despite some concerns expressed by Gloucester-Southgate Coun. Diane Deans. The current sign bylaw doesn’t allow such signs in Ottawa. But the city — which last month approved a dozen billboards on cityowned properties — expects sign companies will be interested in digital billboards, which can offer ad time by the minute and bring in more money. Staff proposed to council that three locations be selected across the city to place

digital signs as a pilot project. After a year or two, staff hopes to have enough data to say if the signs are worth rolling out city wide. “I don’t know why we are doing this as a pilot project, if there are possible public safety and traffic concerns,” Deans said, adding that she didn’t want one of the three sites selected to be in her ward. John Manconi, the city’s general manager of public works, said that there isn’t enough data to assume there would be any kind of safety risk. “There is no data to prove the signs are safe or unsafe,” he said. “The only way to do it is through a pilot study.”

Manconi did say that the ward councillors would have a say in the test sites. “If a councillor really doesn’t want a sign in their ward we can look for another location,” he said. Gloucester-South Nepean Coun. Steve Desroches was all for the project. “This council is always faced with budgetary concerns,” Desroches said. “And now that we are faced with a possible revenue-generating solution we hesitate.” Desroches said driver distraction and safety were weak arguments and that he thought the signs could prove useful in altering the public to lane closure or construction work. “This technology is not new and is used in

a lot of other jurisdictions,” he said. Barrhaven Coun. Jan Harder suggested that the Nepean Sportsplex sign could be upgraded and used to generate revenue. “I don’t think that sign has been replaced since the building went up,” she said. Harder expressed some concern that the city would treading on the toes of private business by using city signs to generate ad revenue. “I think there are a lot of businesses excited to take advantage of the prime land that the city is in possession for their advertising,” Deputy city manager Steve Kanellakos said. jennifer.mcintosh@metroland.com

Allan Poulsen is excited to see the next generation of electric-powered cars roll into his driveway on Wednesday, Aug. 25. Above, Poulsen and his wife Julie Gourley and children, Emily, 11, and Katrina, 14, take an up-close look at Sparky. Left, a close-up look at parts of iMiEV car, manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors.

Sparky meets Sparky on steroids BLAIR EDWARDS KOURIER-STANDARD Allan Poulsen was excited to see the next generation of electric-powered cars roll into his driveway on Wednesday, Aug. 25. “What a really neat car,” said Poulsen. “It’s so quiet.” The Beaverbrook man, the proud owner of Kanata’s only car powered entirely by electricity – a converted 2002 Ford Ranger known as Sparky – said he was interested to see the i-MiEV sub compact car (coincidently also nicknamed Sparky). The sub compact car, manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors and currently only on sale in Japan, will be available in Canada by the end of 2011. The iMiEV will sell for between $30,000 to $40,000. “I think it’s awesome,” said Poulsen’s wife, Julie Gourley. “Now we have the major car companies taking the task of building the electric vehicles.” The iMiEV is the second mass-produced zero emissions vehicle powered entirely by electricity that will be sold on the Canadian auto market. Last year, Nissan introduced the Leaf in Vancouver. Mitsubishi has sent two cars – Sparky and its twin, a vehicle nicknamed Zippy – on a cross Canada tour. Sparky is driven by freelance writer Andrew Bardwell.

“It’s a nice car to drive,” said Bardwell. Sparky attracts a lot of attention on the road said Bardwell. “We had a fellow pull off the highway and follow us in the parking lot (in Ottawa),” he said. The car’s battery can be charged in 14 hours using a standard 100 volt plug, seven hours using a 200 volt plug and half an hour using an industrial-sized charger, that Mitsubishi hopes will eventually be supplied at condo and office buildings as well as shopping centres. SIX OWNERS Poulsen said electric car owners are a select group, adding that he knows of only six of them in Ottawa. The software designer at Alcatel-Lucent bought a Ford Ranger in 2002 and spent $20,000 to convert it to an all-electric vehicle. “For the daily commute it’s perfect,” said Poulsen. Sparky the Electric Vehicle can reach a maximum speed of 100 kilometres per hour on a fresh battery and can travel about 50 kilometres before needing a recharge. The back of the truck is filled with 24 six-volt batteries, connected in a series and packaged in a box. Underneath the hood, where there once was a gasoline engine, is a nine-inch DC motor. “Basically it’s a golf cart on steroids,” said Poulsen. Poulsen has to replace at least one of the lead-acid batteries

a month – by comparison, the lithium ion batteries used by the iMiEV can last a decade before needing a replacement. He charges his batteries by plugging into an outdoor outlet. Poulsen commutes 10 kilometres to work at Alcatel on March Road and back home five days a week and he also uses it for short trips around the neighbourhood. Susan Lawrence, a Manotick resident, and Darryl McMahon, a Bells Corners man, were on hand for the visit of iMiEV. Lawrence drives around Manotick in a converted 1990 Volkswagon Jetta. “I wanted to reduce my consumption of gasoline,” said Lawrence. “It’s great, a smooth vehicle. “People will follow you and they’ll roll up beside you and give you the thumbs up,” said Lawrence. McMahon keeps a fleet of electric vehicles: a tractor, a boat, a motorcycle and a converted 1973 Porsche 914. “I’ve really just come to love the quiet and reduced maintenance,” said McMahon. McMahon’s electric Porsche can reach a top speed of 140 kilometres per hour. Both McMahon and Lawrence – who hired a technologist to convert their vehicles from gasoline to electric – said it was encouraging to see a large automobile manufacturer start to mass-produce electrically-powered vehicles. blair.edwards@metroland.com

TYKE The Kanata Knights looked in mid-season form in a 25-7 win over the Bel-Air Copeland Lions on Sunday, Aug. 29. With the help of some powerful team blocking, Shabach Kerr impressed the crowd by rushing for 95 yards and scored two touchdowns, while Sutton Allard added another rushing touchdown. Quarterback Mackenzie Murphy had a solid game with one touchdown and was 2-2 in passing. The Knights defence was led by strong tackling performances from Jarod Wakeman, Adam Goodfellow and Sebastien Vienneau, while both Britton Quirk and Kane Obas fought hard on the line and each came up with

a fumble recovery. The Knights also had a spectacular interception made by Christian Meliambro. MOSQUITO The Kanata Knights Mosquito team fought valiantly against a tough opponent, and intense heat, during their second game of the season Sunday, Aug. 29, facing off against the Bel-Air Lions at Notre Dame High School. Knights offensive line players Nevan Carter, Patrick Massia and Tyler kept up their own heat as they drove again and again, chipping away at the Lions’ defensive line. On the other end of things, Knights defensive team members Kevin McGuinness, Jacob Cuffley and Michael Kraeker worked to cool the Lion’s attack. Despite their efforts, the Knights lost the match but will be prepped and ready when they face Myers Riders Saturday, Sept. 4 at the Nepean Sportsplex.

NEPEAN KNIGHTS MINOR LACROSSE ASSOCIATION As the Nepean Knights Minor Lacrosse Association (NKMLA) celebrates its 40th Anniversary, it has its first all-girl competitive box lacrosse team. At the beginning of the 2010 competitive season the NKMLA sent an email to the association members inviting girls at all age levels to an information and tryout session. The girls in the above photo came out to the session and showed such enthusiasm that the association decided to go ahead with a competitive team at Peewee level. The Nepean girls’ team consists of girls from the Tyke, Novice and Peewee levels. During the competitive season they practiced twice a week and had a number of games against the Gloucester Peewee girls team. In July, the girls travelled to Whitby for a one day tournament where they played against Whitby and Clarington and came out with a win and a loss, which was fantastic for their first real tournament experience. From Aug. 3 to 5 the girls headed to Whitby for the Ontario girls box provincials where they played against four other teams. Their record was 1-3, but the girls and their coaches were extremely pleased with their performance because the Whitby and Center Wellington teams were made up of almost all Peewee aged players. The girls came away from the provincials in high spirits and looking forward to getting their friends involved next season. Many thanks go out to the coaches, John Kyte and Don Osborne, for there never-rending support and coaching the girls to be better players and show exceptional sportsmanship. We cannot forget the Knights association and especially president Peter Drisdale for offering this program and donating the floor time to help get girls box lacrosse up and running.

Liam Mellor lead the team with 203 rushing yards, 20 yards on kick off returns and put the first touchdown points on the scoreboard for the team this season. Quarterback, Jake Hamm managed the team to the win throwing numerous complete passes including one to Paul Caissie who took it in for the touchdown. Keenan Tanti had a stellar day at fullback blasting through the Bel-Air defence gaining 52 rushing yards on the day. Joey McKiernan also had success moving the ball forward. The O-line of Will Johnson, Rob Labrie, Duncan Jarmyn, Evan Gammon, Patrick Heika, Carson Fischl and Chris Farah-Poirier provided superior blocking allowing for the scoring opportunities. Receivers Jacob Macartney, Matt McSheffrey, Mike Weir, Jake Kellett and Liam Dubois will be hard at practice this week preparing for the next game. Defence was lead by veteran players Kyle King, Logan McKenna and Amar Knight. Knight, with great pass rushing from the D-Line intercepted a ball late in the game and with Logan McKenna blocking took it into the end zone scoring the first defensive touch down of the season. King had a spectacular 60yard punt return and a dozen hard hitting tackles. The D-line’s Peter Pucci, Peter Fillmore, Geordin Langill, Cameron Fischl and Andrew

Clarke kept Bel-Air off the scoreboard. Strong tackling was provided by Tom Kenny, Grant Moser, Nathan Carter, TImi Amaebi-Okoro, Tom Ogilvie, Duncan Miller and Brandon Phelps, who also had a kick off recovery. Evan Yourth had a fumble recovery and a successful day on kick off and punts. BANTAM The Kanata Knights Bantam’s won their 2010 season opener with a 17-0 win over the Lions. The offence scored on its second series with a 55 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Nick Gorgichuk to rookie receiver Chris Bumstead. A safety in the second quarter added two points for the Knights. The offence charged back after the half as The Hoggies, consisting of Joe Borrello, Connor MacKinnon, Jacob Schwenger, Lake Johnston, Michael Langlois and Jason Lachance opened huge holes all afternoon long and allowed the game’s leading rusher, Jeffrey Marcus to punch through for a 45-yard touchdown run. Marcus ran for 151 yards on the day. The defence held the Lions at bay all afternoon and didn’t allow their offence out of the cage. Lead by Mitchell Graham (5 solo tackles and 4 assisted, 1 forced fumble and 1 solo and assisted sack), Harrison da Costa (3 solo tackles, 2 assisted, 1 assisted sack and 1 batted ball) and Justice Maci (3 solo tackles and 2 assisted tackles), the entire D shut down the Lions offence recording two sacks and a timely interception by Jordan Gorgichuck. Jacob Nicholson, the Knights Kicker put two through the up rights and John Allaire added one more point with a 30-yard punt into the Lions endzone.

The Ontario government is investing $1.85 million in three Kanata high-technology companies, a move that is expected to create 87 new jobs. The province announced it will give $850,000 to MDS Nordion through the biopharmaceutical investment program and $1 million to YOUi Labs and Seregron Solutions through the Investment Accelerator Fund. “Ontario is investing strategically to help innovative companies compete in markets where Ontario can be a global leader,” said Glen Murray, Ontario’s Minister of Research and Innovation. MDS Nordion, a health-sciences company, will use the money to develop and manufacture radiopharmaceuticals that help diagnose and treat disease, including cardiac and neurological conditions as well as several forms of cancer. The money will create 22 new jobs and help the company retain five existing positions. “Ontario’s support will help enhance our global competitiveness and provide physicians and the patients they serve with effective diagnostic tools and treatments,” said Steve West, CEO of MDS Nordion. YOUi Labs and Seregron Solutions will

use its money to support new technology development and create 65 new jobs over the next two years. YOUi Labs design software applications and user interfaces for smart phone and personal electronics manufacturers. “Investment from the IAF provided us with the capital we needed to reach customers and gave us the credibility we needed to approach other investors,” said Jason Flick, president of YOUi Labs. Seregon Solutions creates mobile applications for handheld devices. “The IAF was a key component to our expansion,” said Julian White, CEO of Seregon Solutions. “Not only did it make sense for the company and its stakeholders financially, but we were able to complete the financing quickly and without a huge amount of legal overhead. This enabled us to stay focused on the business and our customers.” “We’re proud to support the exciting new thinking and technology of companies like Seregon and YOUi Labs,” said Bob Chiarelli, MPP for Ottawa West-Nepean. “They demonstrate how innovation is building our quality of life – with new products, services, jobs and growth in Ottawa. Publishing all of the ads from our newspapers will only enrich the local shopping experience for our audience,â€? said Chris McWebb, publisher of Metroland Media – Ottawa Region. “Flyerland is not only a tremendous shopping tool – but also a friend to the environment, which is a very positive combination,â€? he said. Flyerland was rolled out about two-and-a-half years ago and is one of the most popular Canadian websites, with more than a million unique users monthly. If a reader logs on in Nepean, Ont. they have access to 61 yers and countless coupons to take to their local merchants. There are about 400,000 products available on the site from 100 Canadian retailers. “We have about 80 per cent of national advertisers on the site,â€? Frye said. “So you can print out a coupon from Payless today and put it with your list and go to the store.â€? Frye said research from the National Retail Federation shows the average Canadian spends $620 on back-to-school supplies, that’s why they timed Ottawa newspaper ads for the fall. “It was really about simplifying the process of getting the local ads online,â€? she said. “And now that people have access to those ads and can comparison shop, we are hoping to help them save of those expenses.â€?

The web will be bringing readers the best deals locally now that Flyerland has moved ads from the region’s Metroland papers online. Debbie Frye, general manager at Flyerland.ca, said that since Flyerland rolled out their system to put ads from weeklies in Ottawa last month, residents have gone to more than 550,000 pages. “We are keeping an eye out for August but we are expecting those numbers to grow exponentially,â€? she said. “What it means for the reader is that they will have electronic access to all the ads they are seeing in their local Metroland newspaper. And can now compare prices at more than one retailer locally.â€? Readers can search for ads by geographic location and get the same deals with coupons that they print out at their home desktop — rather than clipping out the coupons from the paper. Frye said 15 minutes of surďŹ ng can save readers $50, by allowing them to do a little comparison shopping. “You can end up spending more money even going to the discount stores if you don’t come prepared and end up overwhelmed,â€? Frye said. “Everyone should go shopping with a list.â€? “We are extremely proud to be providing this value added service to all of our advertisers and readers. A group of young girls break fast after sunset during Ramadan, the ninth month in the Muslim lunar calendar. It’s a time when Muslims make an extra effort to improve themselves as human beings and practice their religion as best they can. Muslims fast during the daylight hours throughout the month, an obligatory element in the practice of Islam. Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, this year running from Aug. 12 to Sept. 10.

Councillor seeks to protect character of Stittsville Main JENNIFER MCINTOSH KOURIER-STANDARD Despite a go ahead from the city’s planning and environment committee on Aug. 24, StittsvilleKanata West Coun. Shad Qadri asked for staff to take a second look at a contentious development on Stittsville’s Main Street at council on Aug. 25. Qadri said that a bylaw created in 2007 protects the character of the colonial-style architecture that lines the main street. The building, at 1491 Main St. would be 11 metres in height and hold five storeys. It would also be set back about 2.2 metres from the road, something Qadri said doesn’t fit with the design of existing buildings near the location. Qadri made a motion to have staff take the 2007 bylaw into consideration and have another look at the application.

He said he has no problem with the intensification factor, merely the height. “The 24 units are fine,” he said. “But the building would swallow the street.” Mayor Larry O’Brien sided with Qadri, saying that in the spirit of giving more autonomy to the wards, staff should have another look. “If the ward councillor thinks it is inappropriate, then I think we need to take a step back,” he said. The mood of council was to delay the item to give everyone time to review since it had only been given to councillors that day. “Making a decision at this point doesn’t make sense until we have time to review it,” KnoxdaleMerivale Coun. Gord Hunter said. “It’s unusual to have shadow arc architecture with colonial. It may be a good thing in the future but it’s tough to take right now.” jennifer.mcintosh@metroland.com

Take two or three friends, raised by terrific moms, mix in a sibling or two and a few dedicated volunteers, and what do you have? You and Me for Memories, a local grassroots group of volunteers committed to raising funds for much needed research into all aspects of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Alzheimer’s disease is quickly becoming epidemic worldwide. According to the World Alzheimer Report 2009 (released by Alzheimer‘s Disease International), the number of people with dementia in North America is expected to increase by 63 per cent over the next 20 years. There is currently no cure, although lifestyle changes can decrease your risk. It is fatal. The idea was conceived over a beer on a cottage deck, while a couple of friends talked about the progression of the illness in their mothers and the devastating impact it was having on their families. Co-founders Bruce Levis of Kanata and Dave St-Jean of Stittsville decided that they needed to do more than just talk about the problem and You and Me for Memories was born. In partnership with the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine, the group is committed to raising awareness of Alzheimer’s, while raising funds to support research. “Wishing for a cure won’t make it happen,” said foundation chairman St-Jean. “Research is the key to a cure.” The group sold out its first fundraising event, An Evening to Remember gala dinner and dance, in Sept. 2009. The Gala was a huge success, attracting over 325 attendees, and raising over $49,000 for Alzheimer’s research. All proceeds raised from the Gala go directly to support Alzheimer’s research at the University of Ot-

tawa. This year, An Evening to Remember will be held on Friday, Sept. 10 at the Hellenic Meeting and Reception Centre, 1315 Prince of Wales Dr. in Ottawa. Emcee Mike Sutherland of Team 1200 will be back again to keep the event moving along and entertain the crowd with his unique sense of humour. Guest speakers include Bruce Firestone, whose own family has been touched by Alzheimer’s. Featuring music by local band Sweet and the Backbeat, a silent auction, great food and a group of fun-loving volunteers, it promises to be an evening of unforgettable entertainment. Tickets are $75 each, with a portion to be receipted for income tax purposes. A highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the Baton Rouge Caregiver of the Year Awards. Care workers at long-term care facilities are on the front line of care-giving for Alzheimer’s patients and are often not recognized or fully appreciated. You and Me for Memories, with the sponsorship of the Baton Rouge restaurants in Kanata, Ottawa and Gatineau, will honour four deserving candidates and the award winner with certificates and gifts to show our appreciation for the work that they do. These finalists will be chosen by a panel of judges from the many worthy care workers nominated by patient families, co-workers and supervisors. You and Me for Memories thanks all of our supporters and our other sponsors. To purchase tickets for the Gala, make a donation, or sponsor the event, please visit our website at www.youandmeformemories.ca. ROBYN PEKARCHUK KANATA THEATRE First comes love, than comes marriage, than comes the baby in a baby carriage. Well, not exactly in the opening play of Kanata Theatre’s 42nd season, Having Hope At Home, written by Canadian playwright David S. Craig and directed by Alain Chamsi. This charming comedy is the story of Carolyn, a nine months pregnant young lady, played by Dayna MacDonald, who lives with her boyfriend Michel (Shane Bouchard) and her wisecracking old grampa Russell (Joel Rahn). Carolyn has decided to have a home birth with a midwife present. On the eve of her labour, her parents Bill and Jane (Bruce Rayfuse and Lilly Bianchi, respectively) are due to arrive for a previouslyscheduled dinner. Carolyn’s midwife, Dawn (Susan Monaghan), also gets a last minute invite, not to dinner, but to deliver the baby! Chaos erupts when Carolyn’s father, a noted doctor, finds out she is having a home birth. Bill has an opposing view and tries to instill his ideas of modern medicine and the benefits of a hospital. The first show of the season touches on a three-generational family, the meaning of home, new beginnings and the differences that will, of course, result. Director Chamsi has a place in his heart for this touching comedy. “It’s about relationships, dysfunctional families and how it all ties together,” he said.

He really stands behind his hardworking cast of whom four of the six actors are new to the Kanata Theatre stage. “Kanata Theatre is always open to new people, and I really wanted my actors to have a good first impression of Kanata Theatre,” said Chamsi. MacDonald has said of her leading-lady role, “this role is challenging and emotional.” Having started at Kanata Theatre when she was 11 years old she said the theater is like a second home. Bianchi, who plays Carolyn’s mother Jane, also has a strong connection to the content of this play having been a midwife. “I was fascinated by birth and am interested in women’s health,” said Bianchi. Artist John Mlacak is being featured in a solo exhibition of recent oil paintings at Gallery on the Lake. Some of his new works include large paintings of northern Ontario and Quebec woodlands, which reflect nature’s beauty, and backyards in the Spadina Avenue neighbourhoods of Toronto where clutter and garbage pails abound with late spring snow. A Kanata resident since 1965, Mlacak has been painting full-time for over 30 years. An elected member of the Ontario Society of Artists and the Society of Canadian Artists, Mlacak participates in numerous groups and solo shows annually and has won many awards for his art in juried exhibitions. Mlacak has studied with a number of renowned artists. He was influenced by the late Canadian artists Brodie Shearer and Bruce Heggtveit, and greatly admires Canada’s own Group of Seven, Tom Thomson and the French Impressionists. The exhibition will run until Oct. 1 at Gallery on the Lake, located in Buckhorn, Ont. For more information visit www. galleryonthelake.com.

THE INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY

A Kanata man has won the Present Around the World engineering competition for the City of Ottawa on Aug. 17. Mario Mahendran will represent the Ottawa chapter of The Institution of Engineering and Technology at the competition’s North American finals to be held in Ottawa on Sept. 11. The winner will move on to compete in the global final in November. Mahendran won the Ottawa competition, hosted by the local chapter of The Institution of Engineering and Technology, for his presentation Feasibility Study of Closed Cavity Bag Moulding for Novel Mouldless Manufacturing of Carbon-Epoxy Composites. His presentation, based on his research at Carleton University, covered low cost composites design and manufacturing for unmanned aircraft systems. Mahendran graduated from Carleton with a bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering and is currently pursuing his master’s degree there. Mahendran is one of 12 students and young professionals that will be traveling from all over North America to present at the engineering competition. Participants at the competition make a 10-minute presentation on a science or engineering topic. They are judged 75 per cent on their presentation and 25 per cent on the technical content. The winner of the North American competition will receive $600 and a seat at the Present Around the World (PATW) finals in London, England in November. The PATW competition is a chance for students and young professionals from around the globe to showcase their academic prowess and their ability to communicate technical topics at a comprehensive level. Since its inception in the United Kingdom in 1871, the Institution of Engineering and Technology has become a world-leading professional organization. The IET has more than 150,000 members in 127 countries and offices in Europe, North America, and Asia-Pacific. Providing a global knowledge network to facilitate the exchange of ideas, the IET promotes the positive role of science, engineering, and technology in the world.

New Fall Service New Service September 5 Several improvements will be introduced in Kanata that will improve your transit options to get to work or school. Effective Sunday, September 5, new fall schedules goes into effect on most routes, so be sure to get your new timetable. Maps and timetables are available at OC Transpo Sales Centres and City of Ottawa Client Service Centres, or by mail by calling 613-741-4390, and at octranspo.com.

Fall Highlights Route 60 will be revised slightly to operate north of Shirley’s Brook via Marconi to Maxwell Bridge at March Road, replacing Route 162. An earlier trip will also be added to accommodate early morning commuters. Service will be removed from a small section of Shirley’s Brook and Helmsdale, but residents will still be within walking distance of Route 60.

Route 184 will be extended into the new community west of Eagleson Road to reduce walking distances to peak period service for new residents. Route 184 provides a connection to rapid transit service and downtown at Eagleson Park & Ride, as well as connections to Hazeldean Mall and Kanata Centrum. Service will be removed from a small section of Eagleson Road and rerouted via Romina and Fernbank. In the future, as the community grows and roads are available, service will be extended along Templeford and Cope.

Travel Planning Automated travel planning is available at octranspo.com. Just enter the information about your trip and the system will create your own personalized travel plan. For the scheduled arrival times of your bus, call 613-560-1000 plus your fourdigit bus stop number.

An earlier trip will be added to Route 61 to accommodate early morning commuters.

Labour Day

Route 162 will be cancelled and replaced by an extension of Express Route 60, as described above. Service will be removed from a small portion of Helmsdale and from Terry Fox east of March Road.

On Monday, September 6, a Sunday schedule will operate, so only those routes that normally run on Sunday will be in service. Holiday schedules are available at octranspo.com, and OC Transpo Sales Centres and the Information Centre will be open. HAZELDEAN

1) Approximately 2.2 million women are affected by migraines in Canada. 2) Medical science has discovered that most headaches are caused by damaged structures around the neck like joints, ligaments, muscles, and cervical discs, all of which have complex nerve endings. 3) Research has proven certain natural treatments have great success with headaches – even better than massage and medications – and with no side effects. Why not get rid of those debilitating headaches today? Read the full facts on this page!

My name is Dr. Craig Hazel, and I’ve been helping patients with neck tension, headaches and migraines live pain free for years now. Every week I hear how women suffer from severe headaches – statements like‌ • “I feel like my head is in a vice.â€? • “My eyes hurt and I feel so drowsy.â€? • “I have to lay down.â€? • “I’ve had migraines since childhood.â€? • “Muscle tension in the neck and pain into the shoulders.â€? They tell me they’re sick and tired of jumping from one headache medication to the next. Here’s what I hear‌ “I am tired of being looked upon as someone who is only out there to get medicine. I only want RELIEF. I don’t know why that is so hard for people to understand. I don’t want to be treated badly anymore. I want to get help, and I want to get rid of the headaches.â€? Imagine being able to live life like a normal person again, pain free and without headaches -- being able to play with your kids, enjoy time with friends, and not have to worry that your headache will hit you at just the wrong time.

Could This Drugless Treatment Be Your Headache Solution Too? Numerous studies have shown the beneďŹ ts of spinal adjustments with headache patients. The Boline Study This study compared two groups of headache patients, half went for chiropractic adjustments, the other half took amitriptyline, a medication often prescribed for the treatment of severe tension headache pain. After six weeks, researchers found that chiropractic patients experienced almost no side effects. And only the chiropractic patients continued to report fewer headaches when treatment ended. The Duke Study Medical experts concluded that spinal manipulations resulted in almost immediate improvement for headaches. Patients also had signiďŹ cantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of headaches than a commonly prescribed medication. Recurring Headaches Are Not Normal No question‌ if you are having headaches then something is wrong. Pain is your body’s way of telling you something is wrong. Finding the problem and ďŹ xing it has got to be top priority! Call today‌ Phone 613-591-9151 Call anytime between the hours of 7:00 am and 6:00 pm. Tell the receptionist you’d like to come in for the Special Headache Evaluation. Look, you have very little to risk and a lot to gain. Call today and we can get started with your consultation, exam and x-rays as soon as there’s an opening in the schedule. Our ofďŹ ce is called Synergy Chiropractic Wellness Centre and you can ďŹ nd us at 329 March Road, Unit 106 in Kanata. Sincerely,

Kanata Council Notes Marianne Wilkinson Kanata North BEAVERBROOK LAWN LIGHTS – The globe light posts are in need of maintenance so the city will be undertaking a re-habilitation program in 2011 to start addressing that issue. Residents can help the city maintain uniform night-time visibility by maintaining their lawn lights with the existing globe-style fixtures. Report a burnt-out light by calling 311, or call 613-580-2424 ext. 23036 and leave a message or email streetlighting@ottawa.ca. Please contact my office with questions or concerns or call the city’s program manager for street lighting, Scott Edey at 613-580-2424, ext. 23197. Health, comfort and appearance – the key functions to a proper ďŹ tting bra. Until recently, the topic got little attention, but Oprah changed all that with her famous bra makeovers. Bras today come in a rainbow of colours, styles and prices, but most don’t really give proper support and direction necessary for health and appearance. A woman often buys what she wore previously, ignoring changes in age and weight. The right bra can make a woman look younger and slimmer – what woman doesn’t want that! An expensive outďŹ t doesn’t look its best when a poor ďŹ tting bra lies underneath. But a well ďŹ tted higher quality bra will enhance any outďŹ t regardless of cost. Proper measuring is the key. Have a professional ďŹ tter assist you. A woman’s individual shape, size, and tissue distribution means that, even with identical measurements, women won’t necessarily wear the same size. The back riding up, straps digging in, tissue that ows out of the cup, or underwires that poke in are all signs of a poorly ďŹ tted bra. It’s not just comfort, its 410671

about health too. Healthy breast tissue requires proper circulation and support. Improperly ďŹ tted bras can reduce circulation and often create back, neck and shoulder strain as well. Avoid the mistake of focusing too much on cost. A imsy, cheaply made bra soon needs replacing while a quality bra, properly cared for, will last a very long time. Better two or three well ďŹ tting bras than a draw full of poorly ďŹ tting ones. Dunrobin’s Todd Nicholson retires from sledge hockey DEREK DUNN KOURIER-STANDARD One of West Carleton’s most inspiring and renowned athletes, Todd Nicholson of Dunrobin, has hung up his sledge hockey blades. Nicholson was left with paraplegia in 1987 following a tragic car accident on route home after his high-school prom dance. A motivational speak who has uplifted

thousands of school children over the years, Nicholson saw the accident as a blessing. “My accident was the best thing that could have happened to me,” Nicholson said Tuesday, after issuing a press release on his retirement the day before. “It’s opened so many doors for me. I’ve met kings and queens and prime ministers; I was honoured with the Golden Jubilee. And I was such as a shy kid. I never

would have made it this far.” Some of Nicholson’s accomplishments include: Canada Paralympic team captain All-Star team member at both the 1998 and 2002 Paralympic Games Canada’s flag bear at the 2006 Paralympic Games in Torino helped Canada win two Paralympic medals and four world championships Queen’s Jubilee award recipient

Todd Nicholson Day proclaimed in West Carleton on June 6, 2000 Volunteering to help raise funds for numerous charities A favourite moment over his illustrious career came in 1994 at the Lillehammer Games when Nicholson was skating around the ice and he spotted his parents in the stands. Another was seeing his wife Emily and children Gwen and Tate in the stands at the Vancouver Games.

However, Nicholson, now 41, says the wear and tear on his body is setting in and it is time to let younger players carry the sledge hockey torch for Canada. “I had an amazing ride and some experiences I will never forget,” he said. “My dreams have now become reality, and reality is telling me – along with my shoulders – that it is time.” He was close to retiring before the Turin Games, after five surgeries. But after receiving 6,000 letters from kids – he rose to the challenge. Plans are in the works to throw a huge retirement party for Nicholson in West Carleton. He won’t miss it, saying he has many people to thank. He is also planning to set up a charity, scholarship or bursary for disabled athletes in the village. “I want to be able to give back, in a financial way,” he said. “I owe so much to so many people. I have to give it back.” derek.dunn@metroland.com

Kanata Lakes club golfer competes in jr. nationals JOHN CURRY KOURIER-STANDARD Even the ultimate winner, Cole Kent of Peterborough, commented on the very fast greens at the Copetown Woods Golf Club, site of the Mizuno Canadian Junior Golf Association (GJGA) National Golf Championship last week. Competitor Ryan Turner of Stittsville would agree with this assessment of the greens, calling them “quick and some of the fastest ones that he has experienced. But despite the speed of the greens, Ryan never once three putted during the two rounds which he played in the competition and he never missed a putt within six feet. He found that if he just took his putter back and stroked the ball properly, the ball would roll true on these greens. Indeed, his putter almost saved the day for him in his second round and came oh-so-close to getting him into the final two rounds. Thinking that he needed birdies on the last three holes to make the cut, he came close, with each of his putts on the last three hopes lipping out – he was that close to making his sought-after birdies. As it turned out, he would have needed four birdies rather than three to make the cut as he ended up shooting rounds of 87 and then 79 on the par 72, 6965 yard Copetown Woods Golf Club near Hamilton, Ontario, considered one of the best courses in Ontario. Playing in the boys’ age 15 to 19 category, Ryan, who is 17, admits that he had a lot of struggles getting his tee shot in play at Copetown Woods which is a links style course with no trees, lots of bunkers and the aforementioned fast greens. He found that the wind always seemed to be blowing across the course, making it more difficult to control a shot. Ryan acknowledges that chipping and putting is the strength of his game, although he admits that he is usually pretty straight off the tee.

“I like to call myself a scrambler, he says, adding that when he does get in trouble, he can usually get out of it. Despite missing the cut at this national championship, Ryan enjoyed the experience. “It was fun, he says. He earned his invitation to this Muzuno CJGA National Golf Championship by finishing second in a CJGA qualifying event at the Eagle Creek Golf Club at Dunrobin earlier this season. Players from across Canada, played in the championship which ran from Monday, Aug. 16 to Thursday, Aug. 19. A total of 74 golfers played in the boys age 15-19 category, with 46 making the cut after two rounds. A total of 163, three less than Ryan’s 166 total, was needed to make the cut. Ryan was not able to play a practice round at Copetown Woods on the Sunday before play began because he was competing in the club championship at the Canadian Golf and Country Club, one of the two local courses where he belongs. He is a member at both the Canadian as well as at the Kanata Lakes Golf Club. He finds that playing at these two courses helps his game because of their differences: Kanata Lakes has larger and quick greens while the Canadian is a tighter course with accuracy required. He usually plays two or three rounds a week at each course if he is not involved in competition that week. Ryan started playing golf for leisure three or four years ago and started playing in local tournaments two years ago. He readily admits to liking the competitive environment and this year, besides playing in the Muzuno CJGA National Golf Championship, he played in the provincials at Quebec City, just missing the cut with rounds of 80 and 77. He says that he likes the individual nature of golf where the result relies on what a person himself does.
