Arsonist torches Glen Cairn car, home ‘We’re just lucky we didn’t go back asleep’: homeowner BLAIR EDWARDS KOURIER-STANDARD Seth dodged a bullet last weekend – a bullet that could have killed his entire family. The Glen Cairn man woke up in the early hours of Saturday, Aug. 21, to discover someone had torched his car parked in the driveway of his home on Country Lane. The blaze quickly spread to the house, as Seth and his wife gathered their children and fled to a neighbour’s house. A gasoline jerry can was later found near the destroyed car – the Ottawa police arson unit believes someone poured gasoline over the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe and lit it. Detectives who canvassed the street later learned that someone had broken into three sheds on Country Lane the morning of the fire – the jerry can belonged to a neighbour four houses down the street from Seth’s home.

“Somebody coming down our street picked through some sheds and found some gas,” said Seth, who asked that his last name be witheld. Police believe the fire was arson. DODGED A BULLET Seth and his wife were sleeping, when they heard a loud noise outside at around 5 a.m. on Saturday morning. “It was like a bang sound,” said Seth. “We’re just lucky we didn’t go back asleep.” At first the couple thought their fiveyear-old son might have fallen out of bed. Then they looked outside the window and saw the problem. Their car was on fire. Seth called 911 and then he and his wife grabbed their son and eightmonth-old daughter and ran to a neighbour’s house.
