Stop Beaver Pond development: Elder ‘We are adding our voices to call for a halt of the expansion’ BLAIR EDWARDS KOURIER-STANDARD An elder of the Algonquin First Nations is calling for a stop to all development of the South March Highlands. “We are adding our voices to call for a halt of the expansion of Terry Fox Drive and housing development at this ancient sacred site,” said William Commanda, a 96-year-old Algonquin elder and spiritual leader. Commanda made the comments in Remarks Regarding Development at South March Highlands, a paper signed by him and Romola Thumbadoo. “This special area is also a place of extremely important archaeological significance to the nomadic Algonquins of the Ottawa River watershed and beyond,” he said. “Evidence has recently emerged regarding its occupation by our ancestors 10,000 years ago.” KNL Development Ltd., a partnership of developers Urbandale Corp.
and Richcraft Homes, wants to begin clear-cutting trees on eight hectares of land north of the Beaver Pond, where Urbandale plans to build a 3,200-home housing development. But Ottawa city council passed a motion put forward by Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson preventing KNL from starting work on July 19 as originally planned, until the company completes a set of conditions. City of Ottawa staff is waiting for KNL to present a tree conservation plan, a detailed inventory of species at risk, more information about buffers used for natural environment areas and grading and drainage plans. Paul Renaud, a member of the Coalition to Save the South March Highlands, is asking the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Culture to step into the dispute and press the City of Ottawa to request an updated archaeological survey of the South March Highlands.
