Stop Beaver Pond development: Elder ‘We are adding our voices to call for a halt of the expansion’ BLAIR EDWARDS KOURIER-STANDARD An elder of the Algonquin First Nations is calling for a stop to all development of the South March Highlands. “We are adding our voices to call for a halt of the expansion of Terry Fox Drive and housing development at this ancient sacred site,” said William Commanda, a 96-year-old Algonquin elder and spiritual leader. Commanda made the comments in Remarks Regarding Development at South March Highlands, a paper signed by him and Romola Thumbadoo. “This special area is also a place of extremely important archaeological significance to the nomadic Algonquins of the Ottawa River watershed and beyond,” he said. “Evidence has recently emerged regarding its occupation by our ancestors 10,000 years ago.” KNL Development Ltd., a partnership of developers Urbandale Corp.
and Richcraft Homes, wants to begin clear-cutting trees on eight hectares of land north of the Beaver Pond, where Urbandale plans to build a 3,200-home housing development. But Ottawa city council passed a motion put forward by Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson preventing KNL from starting work on July 19 as originally planned, until the company completes a set of conditions. City of Ottawa staff is waiting for KNL to present a tree conservation plan, a detailed inventory of species at risk, more information about buffers used for natural environment areas and grading and drainage plans. Paul Renaud, a member of the Coalition to Save the South March Highlands, is asking the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Culture to step into the dispute and press the City of Ottawa to request an updated archaeological survey of the South March Highlands. Renaud said the archaeological study of the lands prepared for KNL in 2003 fails to consider the heritage of the Algonquin Nation. Robert McGhee, a former curator of Arctic archaeology at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, said the 2003 KNL report ignores the land’s archaeological potential. “The major problem with this report – and I see it as a fatal flaw – lies in the fact that is statements regarding prehistoric land use appear to be based on an assumption that the local geography and physiography described at the time of European settlement continued unchanged from the ancient past,” said McGhee
in written comments about the 2003 KNL archaeological assessment. McGhee said the report ignores the fact the region underwent significant physical changes since the last Ice Age over 9,000 years ago. Between 9,000 and 11,000 years ago the Carp Ridge emerged as a series of rocky islands surrounded by the Champlain Sea, and would have made an ideal hunting area for indigenous people during early post-glacial times. “When this fact is taken into account, the rocky upland areas of the proposed development can no longer be ignored as of low archaeological potential,” wrote McGhee. “In fact they should be considered to be of high potential for occupation by early post-glacial

Q
Why does one of my turn signals flash faster than the other?
A
This is most likely caused by a burnt signal bulb; it’s an indication that a bulb needs to be replaced. The electrical circuit contains a resistor style flasher, it turns a signal on and off when there is ample electrical current. If a bulb is damaged, the circuit is also damaged and therefore the remaining signal bulb will flash faster. 34 Edgewater | Kanata

sea mammal hunters along the subsequent shorelines.” In 2006, primitive stone tools used for cutting and scraping were discovered on the southern tip of the South March Highlands, near Kanata Avenue and Richardson Side Road. The tools are now on display at the Algonquin Way Cultural Centre at Golden Lake Ont., near Bancroft. Renaud said the Coalition to Preserve the South March Highlands will ask Ottawa city council to consider requesting another archaeological survey. “The city’s refusal to require KNL to do the obvious is incredible,” said Renaud. blair.edwards@metroland.com

Call it the Obama factor. Ever since U.S. President Barack Obama popularized using Facebook and Twitter during the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election, the use of social networking media as a campaign tool has been gaining popularity. “Certainly social media played a huge role in that and everyone took note,” said Bruce Graham, spokesperson for the Jim Watson mayoral campaign. “I think it’s wonderful to engage voters, especially a younger demographic. Politicians should be front and centre using this.” Watson had never really used Twitter before he declared his candidacy for mayor of Ottawa, said Graham. “Now 1,000 people are follow-
ing him,” he said. “It’s a learning curve.” Twitter allows Watson to instantly respond to residents asking a question about his election platform, said Graham. “You get more plugged in,” he said. “You get more of a pulse of what people are talking about.”

But Facebook and Twitter are valuable tools for instantly connecting with the electorate and gathering ideas and suggestions from people, Helleman said. “I’m a high-tech guy,” he said. “I’ve got all the tools at my disposal, and I’m using them all.” Helleman uses Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to keep connected with voters in Kanata South – he recently launched an iPhone application, that allows users to receive Facebook and Twitter updates about Helleman’s campaign on their phones. “The iPhone is a one-stop shopping approach,” he said. So far nearly 200 people have signed up for Helleman’s Facebook and Twitter campaign sites. “I’m also going to be using my Facebook and Twitter to launch my platform,” said Helleman. “So they’ll be the first to know.” The new media also allows “experts” in various fields – such as scientists, engineers and city employees – to quickly suggest ideas and express concerns about various issues in Kanata South. “Twitter’s great because I’m getting great feedback from people,” Helleman said. Allan Hubley, who is also running for councillor of Kanata South, uses Facebook but not Twitter. “What I’m hearing from most people is they don’t have time for Twitter – they’re not interested in what candidates are eating for lunch.” Hubley said he relies on door-to-door campaigning – he said he’s knocked on nearly every door in Kanata South.
“I believe the best contact is to reach them at the door and spend the time at the door talking about what’s important to them.” Marc Favreau, another candidate for councillor in Kanata South, said the social media is an effective way to organize volunteers and to get campaign information out. “Residents like knowing … what you are doing,” he said. “I think over the years (the use of social media) could grow. “The biggest benefit of Facebook and Twitter is just hitting a new generation of residents, a younger generation – such as my generation,” said Favreau. “We all use Facebook and Twitter.” Most people want to see candidates visit them at the door, said Favreau, but there’s still a place for the new media in municipal campaigns. Helleman said that if he’s elected he plans to continue using social media to stay connected with his constituents. “The city has to change and adapt, to become 24-hours accessible,” he said. “That’s where I see the new technology helping – not just campaigns.” LAWN SIGNS Lawn signs are a valuable low-tech tool for gauging a community’s support for a candidate, said Hubley. The City of Ottawa’s election rules allow candidates to post signs on the front lawns of supporters starting two months before a municipal election. “To me that’s a powerful message from the community,” said Hubley. “All you have to do is drive around the streets to see what your neighbours are saying.” Candidates can’t manipulate public perception by placing signs strictly on

public property, he said. Hubley said that so far 400 signs have been placed on the front lawns of Kanata South residents. Helleman said he’s moving away from putting up lawn signs, relying more on social media networking to gather support for his election campaign. The Helleman campaign has 1,000 small signs and 200 lawn signs. “We don’t anticipate putting them all out,” Helleman said. “It’s just to be competitive not overwhelming.” In August, Helleman called on his fellow candidates to join him in a pledge to put up signs a month before election day. None of the other candidates agreed to hold off on putting up the election signs, said Helleman. blair.edwards@metroland.com

Herntz Golmann said it’s time for a change in city council and he’s hoping it starts in Kanata North ward. The 58-year-old driving instructor and school bus driver said he knows he’s an underdog heading into the Oct. 25 election running against incumbent Marianne Wilkinson. With only a few weeks until the nomination deadline of Sept. 10 Herntz for the City of Ottawa’s 2010 municipal election Golmann it looked like Wilkinson was going to be acclaimed as councillor of Kanata North. Golmann said he didn’t want to see an acclimation in his ward. “If she’s going to win she’s going to have to fight for it,” Golmann said. Besides, running for city council has been on his mind for a long time, after watching Ottawa Mayor Larry O’Brien’s struggle to push through a tax-freeze budget, he said. “When I see this Larry O’Brien, what (council) did was gang up against him, some councillors,” said Golmann. “I didn’t like that. “When you have a few councillors ganging up against the mayor nothing is going to get done,” said Golmann. Wilkinson has decades of experience in politics, but council needs some fresh faces with new ideas, Golmann said. The Morgan’s Grant resident studied business accounting at Algonquin College, but didn’t complete the diploma program after he was offered a job as a driving instructor. NEW IDEAS When the City of Ottawa amalgamated in 2001, the politicians promised savings, but they have yet to materialize, said Golmann. City council needs to find those savings by reducing the head count at City Hall,
Golmann said. “Do you see how many people are working at City Hall?” he asked. “Close to 19,000.” Golmann wants to reduce that number to 15,000 over the next four years through natural attrition – by simply not hiring to fill positions created by retirements. “That will reduce our taxes,” he said. “We are paying too much taxes – we are, all of us.” Golmann said he also hopes to bring more money into the city’s coffers by attracting more businesses to set up shop in Kanata North. Every large new business will employ between 100 to 300 people; new residents and companies that pay taxes. More money translates into a potential tax break, Golmann said. “We never get a break,” he said. “Each year is the same – you have to get a four to five per cent increase.” Transit is another important issue in Kanata North, said Golmann. “Kanata North’s bus system is no good,” he said. “Around here people have to walk a long distance in order to get a bus.” Golmann said he wants to improve the city’s bus system and bring more money to road improvements. These are “must haves”, said Golmann, more important than “nice to have’s” like the city’s multi-billion-dollar light-rail project. Golmann said he’d like to create an organization that recruits young people to spend time with seniors, a group he calls Adopt a Senior. “They can go and spend an hour with a lonely senior citizen,” he said. Golmann said he has many other ideas, which he will roll out during his campaign. Golmann said he’s looking forward to campaigning in Kanata North, and that he’s not worried about going up against incumbent Wilkinson. “It’s not going to be a battle of the sexes,” he said. “It’s not going to be a battle of the races – it’s going to be a battle of ideas.” blair.edwards@metroland.com

$57-million price tag. Tremblay and several other residents also expressed concern over pedestrians and cyclists at the Moodie termination point. Cullen said that the city made some concessions and would be building a path. Tremblay said it’s not enough. “We need to have a separated path,” she said. “Cyclists are going to be navigating around pedestrians and cars, we just don’t feel that it’s safe. I think we should hold off on this phase and wait and do it right.” The report was to go to council on Sept. 8 after the Kourier-Standard went to press. jennifer.mcintosh@metroland.com

The City of Ottawa’s transportation committee is moving forward with a plan to extend the transitway from Bayshore station to west of Moodie Drive, despite some concerns from residents. Staff has chosen the contentious Queensway north route, which residents don’t like because they feel it comes to close to their homes and will increase traffic and noise in their neighbourhood. Bay Coun. Alex Cullen said that he thinks a motion to have noise barrier fittings put in will ease some of the concerns. “The MTO (Ministry of Transportation) approved that section of the 416 and 417 for noise barriers, but there are so many other projects being done, we thought we could do it for them,” he said. “I think we have made
some concessions and while, the residents are not happy with the route, they are happier.” Ruth Tremblay, president of the Crystal Beach-Lakeview Community Association, said that the group supported but another route should be considered. Tremblay said the southern side of the Queensway is the farthest away and threatens the least amount greenbelt land. The north route threatens the Stillwater Creek and the regionally rare Black Maple. The Bayshore to Moodie route is the first phase of the transitway extension. The second phase includes grade separation of Moodie Drive for westbound transitway buses and a transit station at Corkstown Road — expected around 2021. Cullen said he expects shovels to be on the ground in 2012 for the first phase at a cost of $40 million. The total project will have a

Public school board trustee Lynn Scott is running for re-election, and is currently the only person nominated for the Oct. 25 election. The deadline for nominations is Sept. 10. If re-elected or acclaimed, Scott said she and other trustees will likely have to work with limited funds. “One of the big things is moving ahead with very constrained budgets,” Scott said earlier this week. “We’ll have full-day kindergarten and three more years of that to phase in.” Full-day kindergarten is being instituted school by school, with some starting as soon as next week. Scott said she’d like to see the next school board create a new strategic plan, with more flexibility and a review of its goals each year. With some schools closed in West Carleton in the past term, Scott said she’d like to see the vacant buildings “retained for community use.” “I’m very pleased to see groups trying to put together business plans (to use the buildings),” she said. nevil.hunt@metroland.com

Lynn Bilson looks frail and moves slowly. With each step she makes sure her four-footed cane lands squarely before she continues. But Bilson doesn’t feel sorry for herself. If anything, she’s happy to be moving so well. Bilson was in hospital not long ago, and soon after became a client of the Going Home program, which helps the frailest of the frail with day-to-day activities after they are released from the hospital. “I appreciated all the help I got with transportation, meals on wheels and basic house cleaning,” Bilson said during the Aug. 31 announcement of more provincial funding for Going Home. She added that the assistance around her house helped speed her recovery: “It certainly made a difference for me,” Bilson said. The province will spend $1.1 billion over the next four years on a strategy to help seniors live in their own homes. The local Going Home program operates across the Champlain Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), which covers most of eastern Ontario. The network will receive more than $27 million this year to provide health services to seniors at home. A successful fall-prevention program will also be beefed up in an effort to reduce injuries that tax the hospital system and may lead to seniors being forced to move from their homes to longterm care. Seniors who decide to stay in their homes – instead of moving to institutions – get the personal satisfaction that comes from independence. The province and its taxpayers benefit too, with fewer emergency room visits thanks to the fall-prevention program, and shorter hospital stays because of Going Home. “We provide seniors with choices to stay in their own home and in their own community,” said

Lynn Bilson uses a cane to get around, but credits her post-hospital care for speeding up her recovery from an operation. Bilson received help from Coming Home, a local program that assists seniors with chores after a hospital stay. The program helps seniors get home sooner and stay at home, rather than choosing a seniors residence or long-term care home.
LHIN senior director of planning Chantale LeClerc during the funding announcement at the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre in Kanata. LeClerc said the current Going Home and fall-prevention programs decrease visits to emergency rooms and – if an injury does occur – gets the patient home sooner. “(Going Home) helps with the basics: shopping, meals, transportation and maintenance at

home,” LeClerc said. Going Home assisted 1,200 clients in 2009, which saved an estimated 1,200 days of hospital care while making hundreds of potential return emergency room visits unnecessary. LeClerc estimated Going Home may serve as many as 1,800 people this year across the LHIN’s area. For information on Going Home, call 1-877-818-0884. HOME LIVING, SEE 9

Come to Kanata’s mayoral meeting
Run for smiles
On Sept. 15 the Kanata Kourier-Standard, a publication of Metroland Media will partner with the Kanata Chamber of Commerce to host a mayoral all candidates meeting at the Brookstreet Hotel. You should be there. This is your chance to hear the candidates explain their vision for Ottawa. So far, 15 people have declared their candidacy for mayor of the City of Ottawa. All the candidates who participate in the meeting are showing they care about the concerns of westend residents. The mayor is arguably the most important voice on council; he or she only has one vote, but is responsible for finding consensus and sets council’s legislative agenda. Who will you vote for? City council makes decisions that affect all of us, ranging from how much we pay for water and sewer services to what kind of development is allowed in our communities (even though the Ontario Municipal Board has an annoying habit of overturning many of those council-directed decisions on development). Upset about how much you’re paying in taxes? Worried about development outpacing the city’s capacity to handle sewage and waste water in your community? Do you want to know which of the candidates support reducing the number of councillors and introducing a borough decision making model – where council handles big ticket city-wide issues and allows wards to make decisions on local issues? Don’t just sit there and wonder. At the mayoral all-candidates meeting, residents can ask those questions. It’s your city. Your vote. Ensure that whoever wins the 2010 mayoral race earns their victory. Not only that, this is an opportunity for voters to educate the candidates – let them know what the important issues are in Kanata and surrounding areas. The event runs from 7 to 10 p.m. Make an informed decision.

Take more care on our roads I am asked quite often why I ride. I have held my motorcycle license for over 25 years and have owned four motorcycles. I did take a long break from my earlier riding days until last year getting back on a bike and felt like I had never been away from it. In the past seven months of recent riding, I have put 19,000 kilometres on my sports bike and have had relatively few incidents. When I first started riding, I did not meet another female rider so I was unique but it has certainly now proliferated across genders and age groups. I took count and of the vehicles that passed by me recently over the course of a few moments on a sunny day on Carling Avenue and was surprised to discover that one in 10 of the vehicles was a motorcycle. So why do I ride? There is a sense of freedom, an en-
joyment of feeling like you are part of nature, unencumbered by the walls of a car, seeing the view from “over the bars”, being on a fast machine that gets to 100 kilometres per hour in a couple of seconds . . . to name a few. But it can be mentally exhausting and physically challenging especially on long trips but most of us riders are always looking for excuses to just get out on ride as either a solitary ride to clear away the cobwebs or gather together with others for social time. We bikers wave to each other as we pass by in acknowledgement of our solidarity. My favourite rides recently have involved riding for charity. My brother, who rides a Harley out in British Columbia, is the president of his military-related motorcycle group whose mission is to ride, have fun and help others. How beautiful and amazing it must

New discussion group opens for Alzheimer caregivers JESSICA CUNHA KOURIER-STANDARD Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias affects an estimated 13,000 people in the Ottawa area alone. This number doesn’t include family members. For every person afflicted with the disease, eight to 10 other people are directly impacted; such as family members, friends, neighbours and care givers. For this reason the Alzheimer Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County have started a Kanata caregiver discussion group as a way to provide support for those who work directly with people affected by the disease. “Family caregivers are facing changes in their loved one in terms of the disease affecting a person’s ability to do their normal daily living tasks,” said Caitlin Brydges, program staff support with the Alzheimer Society. “The aim is to offer an opportunity for family caregivers to come together, to share and to gain support in a confidential setting; to know that they’re not alone.” The group is open to all family
members caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia. “People may feel that they are dealing with an issue that is solely happening to them,” said Brydges. “There’s great comfort and reassurance when they come together

”
with others who are dealing with the same thing.” Those who participate in group discussions can learn from others who have been in a similar situation, she said. “It’s an opportunity for people to talk to one another, an opportunity to discuss with other people who
are facing similar circumstances. When they come to a discussion group it’s often a rich discussion on tips on how to care for their loved ones.” COMMUNITY SUPPORT The Alzheimer Society has been providing support in the Ottawa area for 30 years. Recently there’s been a large demand for more support in the city’s west end. “People have asked for support in their community,” said Brydges. “A support service that’s close to them.” The group will provide support for Kanata, Stittsville, West Carleton and other surrounding areas, said Brydges. The Kanata caregiver discussion group will be held at the Glen Cairn United Church, 140 Abbeyhill Dr., Kanata, on the first Tuesday of every month. The first meeting will be held on Oct. 5, starting at 10 a.m. and running until noon. To register for the meeting, call 613-523-4004 or email info@ asorc.org. DISCUSSION GROUP, SEE 13

Wayne Ronstadt (who not only drives the tour bus) and General Rick Hillier (ret.) both co-chairs who are avid motorcyclists also gave us uplifting speeches as well as others who brought tears to my eyes. It also just goes to show that we motorcyclists come from all different backgrounds but are united in our passion to ride. Often, the biker mentality crosses over into peoples’ lives hence the phrase Live to Ride. My personal moto is “the passion is in the risk” and what risks we all face out there on the roads. Obviously, there is in the back of our minds at all times we get on our motorcycles, something may happen and quite often does without serious repurcussion but it is not and should not be a reason for us not to ride. My teenage son refuses to ride on the back of my motorcycle because it is too dangerous and I totally appreciate the sentiment. I cannot count how many
times I have been cut off this year. The most scary being a young kid in a pickup truck running a red light and almost creaming me under his front tires. I had the green light at the intersection and was moving into my left but had to slam on my brakes leaving me within an inch or two of the front of his truck. He did not even brake or slow down... he looked at me in the eye as he passed by at excessive speed. Other times, drivers are not shoulder checking or are distracted by cell phones and unfortunately do not see us. I am thankful about the recent ban on cell phone use in cars but still hear about these incidents all the time from my fellow riders. I will acknowledge that drinking and driving (I have a zero tolerance for alcohol on my motorcycle) and excessive speed account for a large portion of motor vehicle fatalities but if all it takes is a shoulder check or an unanswered cell phone call in order that we can all return to our friends and families without incident, we all, no matter what we drive should be more attentive. Please, for all of us operating our motor vehicles, take care on the road! Beth Montgomery Kanata

Garage destroyed in Sunday fire
Kanata Kourier-Standard - SEPTEMBER 09, 2010
14
KOURIER-STANDARD STAFF A Kanata family was forced out of their home after their garage went up in flames on Sunday, Sept. 5. The blaze on McCurdy Drive was put out quickly by responding firefighters and no injuries were reported. The family will be staying with friends.
“FINALLY! A BRA that offers comfort and support without underwires!”
According to officials, a neighbour noticed the fire and warned the family so they were able to evacuate in time. The fire started in the garage and extended to the inside of the house and attic but fire crews managed to control the fire before it spread to the rest of the house. The blaze is under investigation but preliminary reports said it is not considered suspicious.

Three Kanata finalists in Idol top 21
Samantha Jotham finished in the top 10 of Kiwanis Idol. A self-taught singer, the 17-year-old said the experience of the competition is one of the most important things to her as a learning tool. PHOTO BY HADAS PARUSH
JESSICA CUNHA KOURIER-STANDARD Three Kanata competitors in the Kiwanis Idol singing contest made it to the top 21. Julia Dods, Samantha Jotham and Ashley Marcinek gave it their all over the Sept. 4 weekend during the finals competition. “I’m so excited about it,” said Marcinek before the semifinals on Thursday, Sept. 2. “I’m so happy that I made it this far especially with all the other singers, they’re so amazing this year. I’m just going to do my very, very best. That’s really all I can do and then we’ll go from there.” Jotham, who lives in Marchvale Estates, agreed Kiwanis Idol is a great opportunity. “It’s really rewarding,” said Jotham on Friday, Sept. 3. “I’ve never really been in a big competition like this. I’m a little nervous, also because it’s in a big mall. It’s a little intimidating because there’s a lot more people watching.” Dods said the experience can be nerve-wracking but the experience is a huge gain. “I’m really nervous but kind of excited,” she said about the semi-finals. “I really love to sing but I’m really, really shy. It will be good for me (to get up and sing).” Usually only the top 20 make it through to the semi-finals, but this year the number of amazing singers was too much and an extra spot was added. TOP 21 Marcinek, who lives in Kanata Lakes, chose to sing Use Somebody by Pixie Lott, originally done by Kings of Leon. “I love the way her voice sounds,” said the 19-year-old. “And that’s kind of an inspiration for me too – to sound like myself but to sound a little bit like her too. Marcinek has been taking singing lessons on and off for the past five years, she said. Along with piano, she also dances ballet, jazz, tap and contemporary. “You have to have some natural ability and I think I did,” said Marcinek about her singing ability. “I just worked at it. I’m just fortunate enough that I got into (Kiwanis Idol) and that I get to perform in front of people. It gives me an opportunity to learn.” The second-year McMaster University student tried out last year but had to leave the competition. “I had to drop out because I had to go to school,” she said. This year, she’s leaving for the campus right after Idol finishes. Jotham, 17, said she’ll be singing Last Name by Carrie Underwood. “I like singing the bigger songs,” she said. “Carrie Underwood has a big voice; there’s a big note at the end of the song and I think that will make me stand out. I like choosing big songs that make my voice stand out.” Jotham said she’s been singing all her life but only started taking it seriously about five years ago. Self-taught, she took lessons for a month
or so before continuing on her own. She also taught herself to play the guitar and has been busy writing her own material. “I’ve always dreamed of pursuing (singing) as a career so no matter what I’m always going to keep trying to pursue it,” Jotham said. “I have covers on YouTube and I’m going to keep adding to them and I’m going to keep doing competitions.” She said the experience means to most to her; performing in front of a large crowd helps her grow her confidence. “Obviously it would be great to win or come in the top three but really I just want to have fun and experience it,” said Jotham. That’s the most important thing for Dods as well. “It helps me become a better singer with their criticisms,” said the 21-year-old who lives in Glen Cairn. “They say really good things, they’re very constructive.” Her first singing competition ever, Dods said she was surprised she was chosen. “You never really know if you’re good or not.” She’s been singing all her life and started taking professional lessons three years ago. She chose Yesterday by the Beatles as her song for the semi-finals. “I just really like it, I really like the Beatles,” said Dods. FINALISTS Dods and Jotham finished the competition in the top 10. Amanda Nantsios, 13, came in first place, Jordan McIntosh, 14, finished as the second runner-up and third place went to 14-yearold Vivianne Clemot. “It was a good contest,” said Eldon Fox. “Everyone had fun.” jessica.cunha@metroland.com

Barbara Carriere fulfilled her life long dream in October 2007 to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, yet even after reaching the summit, it was still surreal, unbelievable and amazing. Did she and her team-mates really make a difference? Of course, as their impact has raised much awareness of the devastating effects of the AIDS pandemic sweeping sub-Saharan Africa. Their valiant efforts raised many funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation to support African grandmothers as they struggle to raise their orphan grandchildren alone with few resources. Come out and share in these Canadian Grandmother’s adventures of a lifetime. Barbara wants to inspire you to make some, if not all, of your dreams come true. The event will be held at the third floor boardroom in the Heron Community Center, 1480 Heron Rd., on Sept. 25, from 1 to 3 p.m. For more information email racafaubert@rogers.com.

Math-rock indie band We Fled Cairo released its first album Adult Braces, which showcases its new style. Made up by duo Dave Mandia and Richard Monette, they changed the original sound of keyboard and drums to drums and guitar. “Our intent is to have that push and pull with guitar and drums,” said Mandia, who grew up in Glen Cairn. “We just started exploring sounds.” He said they don’t use sheet music when putting together their songs, they just go with the flow. “We don’t sit down and figure out timings,” said Mandia. “Sometimes the drums and guitar don’t match up but we do that on purpose.” Math-rock is a rhythmically complex, guitar-based style of experimental rock, with irregular starting and stopping, sharp melodies and jarring chords. The sound works for the band. The two work well together, creating unique music that never sounds the same from one song to the next. Adult Braces is “essentially what you would hear live,” said Mandia who is taking his masters in chemistry at the University of Ottawa, while Monette is taking his at Carleton University in information systems technology.

Holy Trinity student competes at national level KANATA RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS CLUB Breanna Rich, 17, has been a top rhythmic gymnast ever since winning the gold medal and provincial championship title as a 12-yearold. She has three individual Ontario Championships to her name, as well as two Ontario Championships as a duo with friend and fellow Kanata rhythmic gymnast Emily Kawai. This year, the Grade 12 Holy Trinity Catholic High School student made the leap to the senior national stream of competition and showed that she can compete with the best in Canada. Among her many successes over the competition season were a gold medal at the Ontario Winter Games, and the silver medal overall at both the Elite Ontario Championships in Toronto and the Eastern Canadian Championships in Montreal. These accomplishments earned her a free trip to the National Championships in Edmonton
where, in her first ever Canadian Championships, she placed 10th overall. A member of the Kanata Rhythmic Gymnastics Club (KRGC) since age eight, Rich also found time to choreograph and dance in her high school’s production of Romeo and Juliet where she was awarded best dancer. Rich competed at the Maadi Cup in Cairo, Egypt, and placed 11th overall. In July, Rich went to the Canadian Gymnaestrada in Winnipeg as a member of the KRGC team, helping to earn the club a place in the World Gymnaestrada in Lausanne next year. Rich will be continuing her career, coaching at the KRGC and continuing her education at the National Circus School in Montreal. At the Gymnastics Ontario Technical Assembly in June, Rich was voted onto the committee as the athlete’s representative, an indication of the high regard in which she is held by the rhythmic gymnastics community throughout Ontario.

Sept. 19 marks the 30th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run. There really wasn’t supposed to be a 30th anniversary in my mind. When I participated in the first Terry Fox Run as a volunteer on September 13, 1981, my participation certificate had space for stickers up to the year 2000. Being young and naive, I figured after 20 Terry Fox Runs, we’d surely have a cure for cancer by then. I was wrong. While cancer continues to be beaten, including the type of cancer Terry had, we still have a long way to go. Before I had heard about Terry Fox, the only big fundraiser I can remember was the Muscular Dystrophy Telethon. Having lost my sister at age three to cancer, I wished somebody would have a telethon for cancer. Then along came Terry Fox. He started his run on April 12, 1980 and ended it on September 1, 1980 when the cancer spread to his lungs. Terry realized his dream of raising a dollar for every Canadian dur-
ing a subsequent cancer telethon. He lost his fight when he died on June 28, 1981, but the run lives on 30 years later as Canadians and people around the globe continue to run, walk, bike and rollerblade in his memory. Thirty years later the run has raised a staggering $553 million. In Kanata, the run has raised over $478,000 to date. Last year, 413 participants raised almost $29,000. Terry Fox once said, “Somewhere the hurting must stop.” For that reason, I have participated in every Terry Fox Run. While I never had the honour of meeting Terry Fox, I stood by his grave in silent reflection when I visited a friend in Port Coquitlam, B.C., Terry’s home town. Two years ago on Canada Day, my children and I had the privilege of meeting Terry’s parents, as they toured Canada with the retrofitted van that Terry spent so much time in during his run. I was able to tell his parents that Terry Fox was my all-time hero. Although my children were born long after Terry died, they know all about Terry and participate in the

“BY GEORGE IT’S SOLD!”
Terry Fox Run each year. After many scheduling conflicts, my son’s baptism happened to fall on the same day as the Terry Fox Run. That didn’t stop us. At three months old, he completed his first Terry Fox Run in his stroller, and was baptised later in the afternoon. In the last 30 years, I have watched family and friends battle this disease. Some have beaten cancer, and some have not. Participating in the Terry Fox Run is just something we have to do. It doesn’t matter what the weather is. After all, Terry ran a marathon a day for well over 100 days in rain, snow and blistering sun. It’s the least we can do. The Terry Fox Run takes place on Sept. 19, starting and finishing at the Canadian Fitness and Squash Club, 200 Terence Matthews Cr., Kanata. Registration starts at 8 a.m. with the run taking place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. For more information, or to volunteer, contact Michael Ward at 613-271-9616, or kanatatfr@rogers.com. high-tech learning environment. With two SMART Boards already in place, Holy Redeemer is receiving three more, one of which will be used in the kindergarten classroom. The SMART Board is an interactive white board that makes learning more collaborative, said Bailey, who has been teaching for six years. Students can come up to the board and manipulate images and words, whatever is on the screen. Grade 5 teacher Shannon Kalil, who has been teaching at Holy Redeemer for eight years, even uses her board to take attendance. “When the students come in they move their names over (to the right section),” she said. “There’s software for everything,” said Maxwell. The senior kindergarten class will start right away, with students becoming familiar with a routine, while the junior kindergarten class takes about two weeks to get in the swing of things, said Bailey. First the students and their parents come in to talk with the teacher and get comfortable, then the children are introduced in small groups over a week period and after that the class starts running at full steam. “In this profession we’re so blessed,” said Maxwell. The students will be blessed too, having teachers making every effort to make this school year the best it can be. jessica.cunha@metroland.com

The toys have been pressure washed, cleaned of any remnants of the past year. The books have been organized and put away according to category. The walls are full of colourful Bristol boards and banners that teach numbers are put up with magnetic tape as a border. There is coloured construction paper covering half a desk as supplies are organized and put away. The tiny chairs are pushed up against the equally low-to-the-ground desks that create a maze through the room. Now the finishing touches are being completed to prepare the junior and senior kindergarten classrooms for the first day of school. Maureen Maxwell and Colleen Bailey, both teachers at Holy Redeemer Catholic Elementary School, have been busily preparing their classrooms for new students for three days and were still hard at work on Wednesday, Sept 1. The week before they took three days of training courses; and over the course of the summer they read up on new theories and curriculums, and spent time with other teachers talking about and planning for the new school year. “We’re learning as a board how important it is to work with your colleagues,” said Maxwell, who has been teaching for 17 years. “It’s a lot of work, but I love what I do.” Maxwell and Bailey said much of the preparation done over the summer is on their own time, such as reading up on new studies. “The big payoff will be (this) week when all the little faces come in,” said Maxwell. This will be Maxwell’s first time teaching senior kindergarten after moving from Grade 2. Bailey, who teaches junior kindergarten at Holy Redeemer in the morning and a junior/senior kindergarten split at St. Isidore Catholic Elementary School in the afternoon, has been helping her prepare, said Maxwell. “She’s just such an amazing resource,” she said of Bailey.

Remember safety in school zones
UNSAFE MANEUVERS IN SCHOOL ZONES Parents often drop their kids off at school then return home or continue to work, necessitating a U-Turn, three-point turn or other dangerous maneuver in the vicinity of the school. These are very dangerous maneuvers when pedestrian volume is high, as it is at the start and end of the school day. You may think there is no harm in one vehicle making such a maneuver. The reality is that several vehicles converge on a school in a 15 to 30 minute time frame and can create a dangerous situation in and of itself.

SPEEDING The speed limit in most school zones is 40 kilometres. If you are traveling at 60 kilometres an hour it takes almost twice the distance to come to a stop. At the beginning and end of each school day there is an influx of pedestrians around our area schools. That extra stopping distance can be the difference between stopping in time and causing serious injury or death to a pedestrian.
RUSHING SCHOOL CROSSING GUARDS Sadly, some drivers travelling through school zones are in such a rush they honk, yell or otherwise mistreat school crossing guards who are entrusted with getting children safely across the street – all in the name of getting through the intersection 10 seconds faster. Some drive through the intersection while the crossing guard is assisting children across, refusing to wait. If you are one of these people, the crossing guards are there because of people like you. If there is a crossing guard present it is because this area was identified as potentially hazardous to students crossing. A driver approaching an intersection while a crossing guard is stopping traffic must stop and proceed only when pedestrians and the crossing guard have left the roadway. If you commit this offence and your license plate is recorded by a witness you can be charged. Upon conviction: three demerit points and $180 fine. Other problem issues related to school crossing guards: • Parking too close to the crosswalk obstructs the view for the guards. • Bicyclists biking through cross walks are dangerous for pedestrians. Bikes should be walked through crosswalks. • Parents stepping out with their kids into traffic before directed by the crossing guard. If the crossing guard is present pedestrians should follow the direction of the crossing guard.
BUSES Drivers need to be cognizant of school buses stopping to pick up and drop off students. With the start of the school season there will be a volume of school buses on the road. It is an offence to pass a school bus that is stopped while it has its flashing lights and stop sign engaged. If your license plate is recorded by a witness you can be charged with this offence. Upon conviction: six demerit points and $490 fine. Most parents who drive through school zones have children attending school somewhere. As you travel through school zones please exercise the same level of caution that you would if these pedestrians were your children.

September is here, which means it’s time for thousands of kids to return to school. With this comes a change in routine as parents and students plan to get to and from school. At the beginning of every school year the police experience a spike in the number of traffic complaints related to school zones. We would like to remind you of some traffic safety issues in and around school zones.
Vehicles making dangerous maneuvers only multiply this situation. If you must change direction it is safest to do so outside of the school zone away from the congestion.

Marianne Wilkinson Kanata North LAST COLUMN UNTIL AFTER ELECTION – Due to municipal election rules, making it fair for all candidates, councillors will not be writing columns, sending mass emails, updating city websites or doing city advertising from Sept. 10 to Oct. 25. Municipal business continues, however, so email or call my office on items of concern in the community and that concern will be addressed. CONSTRUCTION, PARKS AND RETAIL – The March Road widening construction scheduled has been revised to have the ultimate configuration operational by end of October, between Morgan’s Grant Way and Maxwell Bridge Road, with signals at Klondike and Maxwell Bridge, and final configurations at Klondike and the Halton pedestrian accesses at Klondike are being reviewed to make movements as safe as possible during construction. The contractor building Sandhill & Brookshire parks is to complete the parks in October. Resident volunteers are helping select the appropriate play equipment from the tenders received. The developer of the retail plaza on March Road at Maxwell Bridge has submitted a revised site plan to increase the size of the Sobey’s from 3716 to 5057 square metres. Construction will be starting soon here, with opening of businesses in 2011.
