Candidates clash over development Show political leanings: Allan Hubley BLAIR EDWARDS KOURIER-STANDARD Candidates should reveal their political stripe to voters during municipal elections, said Allan Hubley during an all-candidates meeting for Kanata South ward last night. Hubley encouraged voters to Google candidates to learn their history and find out “who’s hiding what.” “One candidate said he’s a fiscal conservative,” said Hubley, referring to his opponent, Aaron Helleman. “Once it came out he’s NDP he’s changed his tune.” Helleman was criticized by his opponents throughout the meeting as a left-leaning candidate who will follow the same policies as the ward’s current councillor, Peggy Feltmate. Feltmate has endorsed Helleman in this election. More than 150 people attended the meeting – which at times teetered briefly towards a debate – held at St. Anne Catholic School in Bridlewood on Tuesday, Oct. 12. Only four of the ward’s six candi-
dates showed up: Hubley, Helleman, Marc Favreau and Rodney Tellez. Michel Tardif and Perry Simpson did not attend the meeting, which was hosted by the Bridlewood Community Association. The candidates agreed on many of the issues: improving transit within the ward, fast-tracking the widening of roads such as Eagleson and Richmond, and ensuring the city’s infrastructure can handle growth in the suburbs. They also agreed Kanata South wasn’t receiving its fair share of services, deserved a pool and needed improved recreation facilities. Hubley and Helleman clashed several times during the meeting over raising development fees to cover the cost of extending city services to new communities. DEVELOPMENT FEES Hubley said Helleman has been using developers as a scapegoat for traffic problems in Bridlewood and flooding in Glen Cairn.
