A land swap that would have protected four hectares of land slated for development north of the Beaver Pond is now off the table, said Mary Jarvis, the director of planning and land development for Urbandale Corp.

The company had agreed to swap the land in exchange for an equivalent parcel of land that had been reserved as greenspace near Kimmins Park.

City council approved the land swap during a meeting on Nov. 22, and also agreed to look at buying the rest of the 29.5-hectare development, owned by KNL — a partnership of Urbandale and Richcraft Homes.

But that wasn’t the deal, said Jarvis.

KNL only agreed to the land exchange so long as the city abandoned any plans to acquire the rest of the Beaver Pond land slated for development,

“That takes the land swap off the table,” said Jarvis.

“The land swap was improperly described at council and we didn’t have a chance to speak to it.”

BEAVER POND TRAIL CLOSED The company has now started fencing off all of its land north of the Beaver Pond – including a trail connecting Kanata Lakes to the Kanata North Business Park – and it has posted no trespassing signs.

“We’ll be advising people it’s private property,” said Jarvis. “We will be closing off the site shortly, once council deals with the motions coming forward.”

Fifteen candles were lit at the Kanata Baptist Church on Monday, Dec. 6, while Christina Aguilera’s song Beautiful played through the silence.

Fourteen of the flames honoured the women killed in 1989 by Marc Lépine at École Polytechnique, the last represented all the nameless women who have suffered violence at the hands of others.

“We need to stand up and not let this happen anymore,” said Cathleen Lavoie from her wheelchair.

Lavoie was shot in the neck in 2008 by her boyfriend, Alvin Persaud, who she had broken up with earlier that same day.

“The doctors said I shouldn’t have lived,” she said.

“It’s a miracle.”

Lavoie and her boyfriend were together for five months, she said. During that time she saw warning signs but didn’t heed them.

“It’s not until he has a gun in his hand that you’ll know if he’s a psychopath.”

Her three children are still adjusting, she said. All three were home at the time of the shooting.

“He blames himself,” said Lavoie about her middle son.

“I’m not worried about me,” she said. “I’m worried about the teenagers. Guys out there, it’s not cool to carry a gun. They hurt, they kill people. It doesn’t just hurt one person, it hurts the whole family.”

“I think they’re just trying to point out it’s their land,” said Wilkinson.

“I think that it was unnecessary, we’re going to be dealing with it at council next week.

“I’m disappointed they put it up at this stage,” she added. “It’s almost like they’re saying they don’t want anyone to look at this land again.”

The Coalition to Protect the South March Highlands is asking the city to push the Beaver Pond development to a committee for review – either the planning and environment or corporate services and economic development committees.

The group has sent a list of 47 questions to City of Ottawa staff concerning the environmental assessment studies supporting the Beaver Pond development.

“They’ve (city staff) continued to ignore them,” said Hulaj.

He said there are significant questions concerning the city’s ability to use the Beaver Pond as a stormwater management facility.

Also, KNL’s environmental assessment is incomplete and there are important unanswered questions, Hulaj added.

“The entire file needs to go back to committee so that the public can be assured that the questions are answered and that the city is not held accountable for its inaction or appropriate management of the approval of this subdivision,” he said.

Ottawa’s eyes could be bigger than its stomach

From the bleachers, and the press box, it would appear to be an exciting time for sports in the nation’s capital.

Minto CEO Roger Greenberg announced on Nov. 30 that his Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) is likely to lock up a North American Soccer League Div. 2 team by the end of the calendar year for the 2013 season.

Ottawa’s latest Canadian Football League franchise – to be renamed Rough Riders if Greenberg has his way – is scheduled to attempt its third try that same year as well.

On top of that, the Toronto Blue Jays have even been rumoured to be bringing a minorleague affiliate team to town.

Throw in one-off events like the 2012 NHL All-Star Game and, to a lesser extent, the 2015 Canadian Little League Championships, and everything appears to be nice and rosy.

But has Ottawa bitten off more than it can chew?

Remember this is the same city that has already lost two CFL franchises – albeit more so for ownership reasons.

It is the same city that’s gone through three separate baseball franchises in as many years and doesn’t exactly pack Ottawa Stadium for games involving the Inter-County League’s Fat Cats.

But, most alarmingly, Ottawa is also the same city whose fans couldn’t sell out the Scotiabank

Place for the return of Dany Heatley on Dec. 2. Sure those who did attend were a boisterous bunch, denouncing public enemy No. 1 every chance, but to have a reported 1,000 empty seats doesn’t exactly paint Ottawa as a strong sports town.

Undoubtedly, the price point for any new sporting business will cater more to families than those wearing suits and ties, but this is supposed to be “Hockey Country.”

And if your stomach is too full to enjoy bread and butter, dessert might not be the best option.

So while it certainly looks like Ottawa’s sporting scene is ballooning quickly, it could end up being just a lot of hot air.

A debate that keeps going around in circles The subject of roundabouts is moving up on the list of topics people in and around Ottawa like to fight about. Right now it trails the two leaders — lawn chairs at music festivals and pedestrians vs cyclists on bicycle paths. But, as a scan of the letters-to-the-editor pages shows, the roundabout is moving up and could soon hit the top.

The topic owes its current popularity to the introduction of a roundabout at St. Joseph and Jeanne d’Arc Boulevard in Orleans. Some are delighted by it.

Some are confused. Some may still be going around inside. All have an opinion.

As an example, check out the CBC and CTV news websites, where readers offer dozens of contradicting opinions.

Actually, the subject is not all that new. For years people have been offering their view that traffic congestion could be eased by replacing stop lights and four-way stops signs with the roundabout, which is said to work wonders in Europe.

Now these people have been joined by less enthusiastic citizens, who say that the roundabout system is too confusing to work here. Some have not driven the Orleans roundabout, some have.

To complicate matters still further, many have driven the Prince of WalesExperimental Farm roundabout where

Only years of practice will determine whether the roundabout system will work here. Meanwhile, it is fun to ponder why we argue so hard about such matters.

My theory, which took a while to get to, is that Canadians are divided into two irreconcilable solitudes once again.

In this instance, the two solitudes are Euro Wannabes and North American Diehards.

The Wannabes want Canada to be more like Europe. Having people drive around in circles would be a step in that direction. Euro Wannabes also like the idea of having children drink wine at the age of 12. They can’t figure out why North Americans don’t vote for policies that work really well in Sweden. And

they can’t for the life of them figure out why soccer, which is such a beautiful game, has not displaced hockey and our version of football from the hearts of North Americans.

North American Diehards embrace the culture that has developed here — including baseball, drive-thru fast food, gigantic cars and loud music and eightlane intersections with turn arrows pointing in all directions. They complain about European countries having so many elections, although Diehards Canadians have stopped talking about that so much in recent years.

As you can see, there is a little bit of unreality in both positions. In a perfect world, North American cities would be full of pretty little squares, tiny cars and cute cafés where people actually sat down to drink coffee, rather than rushing along the street carrying it in a takeout cup. Mind you, in a perfect world, Europe would be a bit more welcoming to immigrants and have places to park.

Also comfortable chairs in restaurants.

Clearly it is not a perfect world. Still, the debate could be useful if people recognized that we are different and that elements of one culture don’t always transfer to another. Some North American free spirits think the permissive drug policies of the Netherlands would

be splendid here, but that will never happen. On a more basic level, the siesta is a wonderful feature of some European countries. But it will never happen here, and we know it.

As for baseball, a truly beautiful North American game, being adopted in Europe, forget it.

Now, it is not true that we, or they, are completely unable to change. Just think how little smoking there is now, compared with 30 years ago; think how many designated drivers there are now, compared with then.

This may give encouragement to those who think North Americans can learn to drive in circles. Belgians playing baseball might take a little longer.

The Kanata Blazers Major Atom A team got a taste of fame at the Kanata Recreation Complex on Nov. 30.

Camera crews filmed the players as they introduced the NHL game for the CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada, which aired on Dec. 4.

“I am really, really excited,” said Ben Whalley, a left-winger for the

team, during the taping.

“I can’t wait for my parents to see me on TV.” Twenty-five teams from across Canada were chosen as part of The Scotiabank Hockey Tonight Kids program and the Blazers were just one of three teams selected out of Ontario.

“It’s the memory of a lifetime,” said Blazers coach Drew Warren. “We are very thankful for Scotiabank for putting this all on.”

Warren said the team only got the call confirming it was chosen a week before the taping was set to take place. Even with the short notice the players put a lot of preparation into the night.

“The kids have been deciding who is going to say what and watching previous teams’ videos online to prepare themselves,” he said.

The team did find out that sometimes the star treatment isn’t always glamorous.

“The hardest part is having to do the takes over and over again,” said right-winger Dan Vu. The players took the entire experience in stride and are looking forward to being featured on a show they all watch.

“My favourite part of Hockey Night in Canada is when Don Cherry talks,” said Gregory Price.

“Millions of people are going to see me,” said Mackenzie Murphy. “So that’s cool.”

The team was competing in a tournament when the show aired but that didn’t stop the players from missing their NHL debut.

“We are planning on getting together as a team and having a pizza party and watching the festivities and the boys on TV,” said Warren.

In a divisive battle some compared to a rigged Latin American election, Carleton-Mississippi Mills MPP Norm Sterling saw his preferred slate of candidates elected to the local riding executive on Dec. 1.

Former Ontario Landowners Association president Jack MacLaren put forward 14 names for the riding association’s board, only to see Sterling’s slate of 14 names elected during the riding’s drawn-out annual general meeting at Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Stittsville.

MacLaren is now preparing for the riding’s nomination meeting, expected in March or April. If MacLaren wins that vote, his name will be on the ballot as the PC party’s candidate in the provincial election next October, effectively ending Sterling’s 33-year run as MPP. Dec. 1 was round one, and MacLaren’s supporters came away claiming the match was fixed from the start.

MacLaren said the party’s head office denied membership to many people he and his supporters signed up as party members. He put the number of disputed members at 150.

Metroland Media spoke to multiple people who showed up to vote, only to find out their names weren’t on the list of eligible members. MacLaren said the

disqualifications targeted only those people he or his supporters signed up as party members.

“The Progressive Conservative party thinks democracy isn’t important in this riding,” he said. “We didn’t even know the format of the meeting until we got here.

“We had to find out from (PC party headquarters) in Toronto when the meeting would be. They did everything they could to be unco-operative. It’s a goddam farce.”

Because the riding’s incumbent board members decided the meeting’s agenda, Sterling had a chance to speak to the roughly 700 party members before they voted. The riding association president, Steven Lewis, also spoke, thanking all the incumbents by name, while the challengers were not given a chance at the microphone.

When the voting process was explained, many people were confused and tried to yell out questions over the noise of those departing the auditorium to vote.

Volunteers friendly to the incumbents handed out ballots bearing the names of the Sterling slate. Voters had to write in the names of the challengers or use a printed handout of the MacLaren slate as their ballot. The MacLaren team’s printed handouts ended up being in short supply.

MacLaren said the uncertainty worked to Sterling’s advantage.

“I think a lot of people left (without voting) because they were confused by the ballot,” he said, adding that the important battle is still ahead. “We’re going to carry on, and we’ll be a little wiser. It’s interesting that (the incumbent board) got more votes than they

have members.”

The riding executive didn’t release the exact vote count, but a number of scrutineers provided numbers that indicated Sterling’s preferred slate won by 356 to 203 votes.

Both camps will now have a few months to sell party memberships in an attempt to garner the majority of the votes at the spring nomination meeting that determines which of the two men’s names goes on the provincial election ballots.

The date of that nomination meeting has not been set, but residents of the riding must become PC party members at least 30 days prior the meeting in order to be eligible to vote.

The Kanata Food Cupboard called for help and the community listened.

Volunteers collected 14,515 kilograms of food – the weight of two adult African bull elephants – during its annual Christmas food drive on Saturday, Dec. 4.

That’s more than twice last year’s total, said Karen Waters, the volunteer co-ordinator for the food bank.

“That’s awesome,” said Waters.

The food cupboard collected the donations at three local grocery stores: Laura’s Independent Grocer in Glen Cairn, the Real Canadian Superstore in Bridlewood and the Loblaws in the Kanata Centrum.

Two O.C. Transpo buses and a cube van (provided by Abbotsford Moving and Storage) carried the bags of food to the food cupboard’s Christmas site, a warehouse on Leggett Drive in the Kanata North Business Park.

The Food Cupboard also accepted $2,000 in cash donations.

The money and food is badly needed to fill more than 215 holiday hampers for needy families throughout Kanata, said Waters.

And the list keeps growing, said Waters, adding that she has received eight or more enquiries by telephone about the service every day this month.

“Right now I’m at 215, but I know that will increase,” she said.

More than 100 residents gathered at the food cupboard’s Christmas warehouse in the Kanata North Business Centre on Saturday night, Dec. 4.

The volunteers, which included four minor league hockey teams, crowded into the loading station early that night and listened to music played by the Holy Trinity Rhythm and Blues Band.

When the first O.C. Transpo bus arrived, loaded with food donated by shoppers at the Real Canadian Superstore, the volunteers formed two chains leading from the bus to the warehouse.

“Look at that bus, it’s loaded,” said one of the volunteers.

Then they got to work.

It took nearly half an hour for the two chains to unload the first bus, but they had fun doing it, sharing smiles all around and more than the occasional joke.

Waters said that this year’s turnout of people to unload the Christmas donations is even more than last year.

“Last year we had a little over 100,” she said.

This year, more than 150 people helped unload the buses and cube van.

The food cupboard still needs the following items for its holiday season hampers, which will be handed out on Dec. 17 and 18 to needy families in the community: • Frozen turkeys.

• Size 6 diapers.

• Toilet paper.

• Pudding cups, fruit cups, granola

But not peanut butter, said Waters – the food cupboard’s shelves are loaded with jars of the nutty spread.

Debra Scott, a volunteer with the food cupboard, said donations are needed to fill Christmas gift baskets: popcorn, canned hams, specialty coffees, jams and jellies, shortbread, cookies, chocolates, crackers and chocolate bars.

The Food Cupboard is also collecting items to put under clients trees for Christmas, such as toys for children and items for adults and seniors.

“We always have a problem (collecting gifts) for older teens and adults,” said Scott. “We do have a problem with the seniors (as well).”

This is Scott’s fourth year creating Christmas baskets and organizing gifts at the food cupboard.

“I have the time to do it and it’s nice to do the little extra for the families.”

The following are ways to get involved and help the Food Cupboard this holiday season: • Food drives: those wishing to donate perishable food items, such as frozen turkeys or vegetables, should contact the food cupboard first to ensure there is freezer space. Non-per-

ishables are always welcome.

• Gifts: many organizations in the community donate gifts through the Angel Tree program, which provides presents for children, teens and adults.

Donations of new gifts for all ages are appreciated.

• Sponsor a family: call the food cupboard at 613-836-7847 (line 2) or email adopt@kanatafoodcupboard.ca to adopt a family. Registration is open up till Dec. 10.

• Transportation: the food cupboard requires vans and trucks to pick up canned goods from schools and businesses the week ending Dec. 17 and help delivering the Christmas hampers Dec. 17 and 18. On Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings the cupboard will be moving sorted food to its second storage facility.

• Volunteers: volunteers are required for all the food cupboard’s initiatives.

Grades 7 and 8 students at Jack Donohue Public School held a vow of silence – which was developed by Craig Kielburger, Canadian founder of Free the Children – last month to bring awareness to the struggle of children worldwide who are silenced by poverty, war and oppression.

During the vow of silence, which is part of character education for the students, Grade 7 students learned about the issues surrounding child labour while the Grade 8 students were taught about child soldiers.

“We learned about child soldiers, how they have no voice,” said student Curtis Lehmann.

The students were shown videos depicting the lives of child soldiers in Sierra Leone and the roles they are expected to carry out.

The young soldiers are forced into cannibalism and covered in the blood of the fallen to teach them not to fear death, said student Caroline Le. “It was really graphic sometimes,” she said. “These child soldiers are forced to do such horrible things at such a young age. Things they shouldn’t be exposed to at that age.”

Intermediate teacher Stephen Eisenhauer said character education is important to introduce to students.

“You shouldn’t underestimate people based on their age,” he said. “We wanted to explain to the students not to feel guilty but to feel empowered.”

The students were given time to process what they learned during the two periods of silence.

They were encouraged to react in any way they felt fit, provided that it could be placed on a standard letter-sized paper to be published in a book for the school li430905

brary. Some wrote poems, some drew pictures and some wrote letters to the prime minister.

Many students decided to continue the vow of silence for the entire school day.

One of them was Hanna Zhang, who drew a poster of two hands touching – one with the words safety, family, happiness and hope flowing around it, the other with silence, horror, blood and no way out – with the message that “Every child has rights. Give them a voice. Help get them out of the war.”

“We’re children too,” said Zhang. “So we understand them.”

Le drew a poster and included a letter she wrote from the point of view of a child soldier.

In the letter she wrote, “I’ve been here for three months and if there is a hell out there, I would rather be there right now…

They tell you not to fear death and make you smear blood on your arms. I want to get out of here and tell someone but I have seen what they do to runaways…

Someone please spread our story!”

For the past three years students at the school have been participating in Minga, a global awareness initiative designed and facilitated by teachers to help increase students’ awareness of global issues.

The word Minga comes from the Native South American language of Quechua.

There is no English equivalent of the word but it essentially means “coming together for the common good.”

It is a word and movement used by Free the Children and many of their supporters in their Me to We initiatives.

The school meetings enable students and teachers to focus attention and efforts on short and long-term fundraising and service goals in local, national and international areas of need.

A former federal NDP candidate for Carleton Mississippi Mills has been elected president of the Briarbrook Morgan’s Grant Community Association.

Paul Arbour, a hightech worker who recently moved to Morgan’s Grant, said preserving the area’s green space will be a priority for the community association. “The big issue we’re working on, at least as a community, is to try to preserve the forests in the Paul Arbour area – the South March BMGCA Highlands,� he said. “It’s a big issue for everyone in the area – it’s a beautiful forest. It would be a shame to turn it into a parking lot and some houses.�

The community association will work closely with the Ottawa’s Great Forest stewardship group, an organization lobbying the City of Ottawa to purchase the more than 24 hectares of land near the Beaver Pond slated for development.

Arbour will have the support of the newly-elected president of the Kanata Lakes

Community Association, Steve Hulaj, who is a leader of the Coalition to Protect the South March Highlands.

Transit will always be an issue, said Arbour. “The previous president and his committee have done a great job of getting those things sorted out,� he said. “You can only scream so much.�

The executive will have their hands full over the next two months organizing for its annual Christmas Lights contest, judging the most festively-decorated homes in the community and Winter Family Fun Day in January.

The judging for the Christmas Lights Contest will take place on Dec. 19.

If winning the CHEO dream home in Manotick this December seems like a miracle, it’s nothing compared to the miracles taking place every day at the very place the lottery tickets support.

Owen Varty, a six and a half year old Riverside South resident, is one of those miracles, getting transferred to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) the day he was born and undergoing emergency surgery at only two days old.

After his c-section birth, doctors discovered that his stomach and intestines were pushed into his lung cavity and that his lung had collapsed. A mobile CHEO team put him on life support before transporting him to the hospital.

“They showed me what he was going to look like beforehand, because that’s a real shock to see them all hooked up, and they let me say goodbye and then they took him,” explained Owen’s mother Monica Coyne, who was a first time mother that day. But Owen survived, and from then on he has been in and out of CHEO for a number of reasons, most recently to receive his sec-

ond cochlear implant to account for severe progressive hearing loss.

Although no parent wants to take their child to the hospital, especially on a regular basis, Coyne said the CHEO staff have made the experience more bearable.

“The things we had to experience were hard but they really do keep you upbeat and they never let you lose hope. No one ever did,” she said. “Owen thinks going to CHEO is a blast, and his sister’s like, ‘Why can’t I go?” she joked.

Owen’s experience at CHEO is one among thousands, and the ongoing CHEO lottery sales are meant to drum up cash for research and resources to further help the hospital treat and save children.

Walking through the CHEO dream home is another kind of miracle altogether: it’s the culmination of an entire community coming together for a good cause, said Connie Lebrun, a corporate development officer at CHEO who is responsible for soliciting and facilitating the many trades, products, and donations that make the dream home possible.

Life got a little brighter for children undergoing treatment at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario on Dec. 2 with the arrival of the latest video gaming gadget, the Kinect for Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

To mark the fifth anniversary of the Child Life Interactive Computers for Kids (CLICK) program, Microsoft Canada announced the donation of more than 200 Kinect devices, which allow players to use their body and voice to play games.

The CLICK program provides patients and their families access to technology, helping to provide a sense of normalcy for the children while staying at the hospital.

It allows them to stay in touch with family and friends, to explore the Internet or keep up with school work.

“I think kids continue to be kids while they’re in hospital,” said Maureen Jones, Child Life specialist at CHEO. “The fact that they can (use technology) to keep up with their friends while they’re here and continue to increase their level of profi-

ciency with the gaming is a big thing.”

Video games provide a distraction for children undergoing sometimes difficult treatments at the hospital and can serve as a therapy enhancer, Jones said.

“Kids can actually utilize (the games) to focus away from any pain from treatment, and really allows the treatments to go a little easier.”

The event was attended by Laureen Harper, wife of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who expressed her support for the program.

“I never cease to be amazed how stoic the children are,” Harper said. “But even the bravest youngsters find illness and hospitals a little scary. The CLICK program goes a long way to easing their anxiety.”

The donation was an expansion of the CLICK program, a partnership between Microsoft and Children’s Miracle Network hospitals.

CHRISTMAS Go Green With Holiday Cleanup The holiday season has arrived. Celebrations and gifts will be at the forefront of the festivities.

Once all of the gifts are torn open, there are bound to be mounds of wrapping paper in each and every home, which can mean damaging waste for the environment.

Wrapping paper, boxes and ribbons tossed straight into the garbage can mean that pounds of added trash will end up in landfills across the 427624

country. According to the Clean Air Council, an additional 5 million tons of waste is generated during the holidays in the United States. Four million tons of that waste is wrapping paper and shopping bags.

There are smarter solutions to dealing with holiday clean-up.

The first step is choosing environmentally responsible wrapping materials.

Glossy, metallic or embellished wrapping paper may not be easily recycled -- or even recyclable at all.

Instead, look for wrapping paper that is made from recycled materials and can, in turn, be recycled once more. Consider wrapping gifts in plain, brown mailing paper and decorate the outside with earth-friendly paints.

Next, nix the tissue paper inside of gift boxes. It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really serve a functional purpose, except for further delaying the reveal of the gift inside. Tissue paper alone accounts for a lot of extra trash. Skipping it means a person will be saving money and the environment. Here are some other green cleanup tips. * Designate a child or adult to gather the discarded wrapping materials and sort the piles into trash.

As part of its Aging at Home strategy, the Champlain LHIN has expanded its assisted living program, which helps older residents live independently and with more dignity in their own homes.

Over the next several months, 10 new assisted living projects will be launched in the region, resulting in 545 new assisted-living spaces for high-risk seniors.

Assisted living services include 24-hour on-call response, personal support, homemaking, and care coordination.

“The assisted living services will be provided to seniors where they live ¬– in their own homes, apartments, subsidized housing, condos, and townhouses – so they are spaces and not beds,” Chantale LeClerc, RN, MSc, GNC(C), senior direc-

tor planning, integration and community engagement with Champlain LHIN said.

“The only exception is 50 units in a building on Murray Street in the Byward Market. The rest of the spaces will accommodate seniors living in Centretown, Alta Vista area, Ottawa East, Vanier, Orleans, Ottawa West. We have not been able to make the services available in Nepean or Barrhaven yet.”

Funding for the new projects is roughly $9.4 million annually. A significant portion of the spaces will be provided to high-risk seniors currently in hospital who need support to return safely to their homes.

One of the many aims of the program is to relieve pressures on hospitals.

“The assisted living services include help with every day activities such as

bathing, dressing, grooming, shopping, meal preparation, housekeeping, banking, home maintenance, etc,” LeClerc said.

The services are available seven days per week, 24 hours per day. Services also include care coordination (that is linking seniors with other complementary services they need to stay at home) and ensuring an overall plan of care is monitored and adjusted accordingly.

“For the time being, as these services start ramping up in December, we will be working with hospitals to identify seniors who no longer need acute hospital care and could go home with these services as well as community agencies who may already be caring for a senior who is at very high risk of becoming hospitalized if they don’t receive this type of care,” noted LeClerc.

The central point of intake is the Com-

munity Care Access Centre. In the future, they will publicize the availability of these services to the broader community. People will have to apply through the CCAC. “The Ontario government, in partnership with the LHINs, is leading the way in innovation by expanding community-based health services for an aging population,” says Jim Brownell, MPP for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry.

“The new assisted-living programs provide seniors with the type of assistance they both want and require.”

The projects are located across the Champlain region, including Almonte, Carleton Place, Cornwall, Iroquois, Killaloe, Ottawa and Renfrew. Services are delivered by community support agencies. The Champlain Community Care Access Centre is also a partner.

What started off as an email between relatives has turned into a children’s book.

Never Say Never is the story of the Dunlop family.

Kami Dunlop’s son, Hunter, was diagnosed with moderate to severe autism at the age of three. The doctor’s told her and her husband, Jamie, that Hunter would never know the value of money, have a sense of humour or be able to integrate and learn in a regular classroom.

Now in Grade 9, Hunter knows the value of money – he delivers the Kanata Kourier-Standard to Bridlewood residents, he can be found laughing at humourous situations and he attends regular classes at Holy Trinity Catholic High School.

The doctors weren’t wrong about their diagnosis, said Dunlop, but Hunter, now 14, has excelled thanks to his parents’ guidance.

“I wanted to show him, this is what the doctors said you would never do,” said Dunlop. “A book carries so much more weight then me just telling him.”

TOO TECHNICAL Dunlop said most books dealing with autism are technical and textbook-like; they can be intimidating with all the recommendations for parents, she said.

“When Hunter was little, so much reading material was recommended to us. It was so technical,” said Dunlop. “I felt like all the weight of the world

was on my shoulders.”

So she decided to write Never Say Never, an easy-to-digest book for children and parents alike about a story of hope and success.

“It’s quick, light reading, and uplifting,” she said. “Regardless of who you are you have something to offer. It’s really just a story about hope.”

The book follows the Dunlop family through the diagnosis to when Hunter proudly showed off his Grade 3 science fair entry – an egg beater that used kinetic energy.

“It was more than we were told he’d ever do,” said Dunlop. “This is a story of him living and succeeding with autism.”

Hunter participates in competitive swimming with the Goulbourn Seahawks in Stittsville and is an air cadet with the squadron in Kanata. He also snowboards recreationally and plays the guitar and piano.

“We always treated the boy first and the diagnosis second,” said Dunlop. “I never look at it like ‘this is it’.”

Writing the book also helped Dunlop fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a published author.

Her illustrator, Sharon Anne Martin, a Nepean resident, also realized one of her life goals by becoming a published artist.

Both women work as education assistants at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Barrhaven.

“I wrote it for him and to fulfill something for me,” said Dunlop. “I think it’s a story for anybody who is told something is never going to happen.”

Nicolas Ruszkowski VP, Communications Ottawa Hospital Ottawa, November 30, 2010 I spent much of my youth in rural France, surrounded by friends and neighbours whose parents were often obsessed with perpetuating traditional, often stereotypical, roles for men and women.

It was not uncommon to hear â&#x20AC;&#x153;men have careers, and women have jobs, until they ďŹ nd a man who has a career.â&#x20AC;?

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why I was inspired by women whose attitude said â&#x20AC;&#x153;to hell with tradition, I have a vocation, and I will turn it into a life-long careerâ&#x20AC;?.

As it happens, I married one. My wife Amy is managing an impressive career in Canadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s public service. Through her, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve built family ties with two other women, my mother-in -law and my sister-inlaw, who have a different vocation.

Linda and Sarah are nurses. They defy old stereotypes. In addition to caring for patients on their wards, facilitating the work of doctors and other health professionals, and enabling the

Linda moved from nursing, to educating nurses, to designing programs to educate nurses, to helping schools design programs to educate nurses. She did this while raising two daughters, making a home with her husband and anchoring the family life of her 5 siblings. As if that wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enough, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spent her retirement sitting on boards, seeing to the quality of health services.

This level of commitment â&#x20AC;&#x201C; though exceptional â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is not entirely unusual for nurses. Three weeks ago, led

by Chief Nursing Executive, Dr. Ginette Rodger, close to 400 nurses from The Ottawa Hospital celebrated a major career milestone achieved in 2010.

Some completed a Masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Degree. Some moved from a Registered Practical Nurse to a Registered Nurse role (with the additional clinical responsibilities that this entails). Others presented research to healthcare conferences in Canada and abroad. Still more obtained recognition from peers and patients for their compassionate care.

All have one thing in common. They make the hospital a better place.

The next time a doctor cures you thanks to their skills, technique, or technology, take a look around.

A Bridlewood father-son duo recently received their fourth-degree black belt in taekwondo – no small feat due to the hundreds of movements both had to memorize and present during their testing.

There are hundreds of movements put into patterns taekwondo students must master.

Each level adds more movements to the ones previously learned; there are 258 movements to memorize for those with a yellow to black stripe, and 819 in total for a fourth degree black belt.

“It was good, he cried tears of happiness,” said Steven Duford about his father Wayne during the presentation.

“It was an emotional experience,” added Wayne.

Both began their martial arts journey almost 11 years ago.

Steven joined the taekwondo classes at Black Belt Excellence Martial Arts Academy after a friend told him about the experience.

Wayne joined a few months later after observing his son in class.

“I’d take him every week and watch,” said Wayne, who is set to retire from his work in the government. “Instead of sitting out

“You have a responsibility to teach the next generation,” he said.

Wayne and Steven both teach at the academy.

“Every student has the potential,” said Wayne. “You bring that potential out.”

Nguyen said the life skills taught in taekwondo help set people up to deal with what life has to offer.

“Focus, discipline, determination and passion; you improve yourself and the world around you,” he said.

Nguyen’s academy, which is located in Bridlewood, is one of the longest-running in Kanata. Black Belt Excellence will be celebrating its 25th anniversary next year.

Young rhythmic gymnasts at the Kanata Rhythmic Gymnastics Club had the chance to show their new skills to parents, coaches and judges on Sunday, Dec. 5.

The gymnasts attended the first Badge Day of the new season and earned their badges in the club’s I’ve Got Rhythm sixbadge program.

In the New Year, they will continue to improve their skills for the next badge, while working on a group routine for the club’s annual spring performance.

Buy-A-Tile: Buy your place in the future What does it take to build a modern state of the art Recreation Center? A supportive community - just ask Councillor Marianne Wilkinson.

One of Councillor Wilkinson’s stated goals, during her last campaign, was to see the completion of Kanata’s new Recreational Centre by 2012 (KanataRec 2012). The new facility is about to go under tender. One of the unusual features of the massive building is an eight lane swimming pool.

“The City has a policy to support the building of six lanes for our pools.” Wilkinson said. “We knew before we started building that six lanes would not accommodate our community’s needs.”

The Community Steering Committee, Chaired by Steve Hulaj presented a plan to add two extra lanes to the building. The City agreed as long as the community raised the extra 1.75 Million dollars the extra lanes will cost.

Terry Sheldon, Chair of the KanataRec 2012 Fund Raising Committee, is spearheading an ambitious, multi-staged campaign (see ad this page) to raise “those necessary bucks!”

“This is nothing if not a worthwhile cause,” Sheldon said. “Our burgeoning Kanata community has long outgrown its once generous recreational facilities. KanataRec 2012 is designed to meet community needs for today and well into the future.

“Community is key. The idea behind KanataRec 2012 is that it will be a facility created, in no small part, by the people and for the people.”

As Sheldon tells it, community involvement at every stage is key to the project’s success. “Steve Hulaj, a community pheom, well known for his active, continuing, leadership in spearheading the move to save Kanata’s South March Highlands and Beaver Pond, Chaired the Steering Committee. Now they have turned the next stage over to the Fund-Raising Committee.

“I believe that with the support and involvement of Kanata residents, we will see the ribbon cut, the facility opened, and the first swimmers into the pool in 2012. But to do that we need the Community’s help.”

Buy-A-Tile, a fund-raising incentive kicking off today, just in time for Christmas, will allow individuals, families and, ultimately corporations, to “buy into the future,” in Sheldon’s words.

Theoretically, the pool is composed of 32,000 individual tiles of which 10,000 are being made available, on a one-time basis, to buy in support of the new Centre.

“We’re going to start releasing those first 10,000 tiles to the public immediately – just in time for Christmas,” explains Sheldon. “But it’s a limited unique opportunity. Once they’re gone they’re gone!

“Talk about getting the perfect present for the person who has everything! From grandmothers to toddlers, to that difficult friend ... spend ten bucks, yes just ten dollars, and you not only get a personalized, numbered certificate but your name (or the name of the person for whom you buy the tile) will be spelled out on the walls of the centre.”

Furthermore, “Your name, or the name of that special person as well as their tile number, is immortalized. It’s there from the time the pool opens and remains there for the life of the pool; the owner’s own particular future footprint.”

But this will only happen with the first ten thousand tiles. “These will never, ever be re-sold,” Sheldon stated categorically, adding “and if people are inspired to dive down and see their tile site, a map showing the numbered placements will be displayed on the wall.”

The rule is one tile per name. If a family of four buy four tiles “they’ll obviously be in a block of four tiles,” explained Sheldon – and as for buying, “we’re making it easy and – most important at this time of year – affordable.”

After payment (credit cards and cheques are accepted: see ad this page) the donor receives an attractive certificate with an area left blank for the name of the individual receiving the gift. Each certificate also bears the number of a tile that matches the legend on the wall of the Centre where every tile is identified.

“Affordability is very important,” said Sheldon. “We want as many people as possible to get involved and to know that through their investment, they take ownership in an important facility that Kanata has needed for some time.

Nepean Raiders centre Brent Norris and Kanata Stallions left winger Kyle Rankin will soon have a chance to show NHL scouts what they’re made of.

The CHL players will participate in the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s (CJHL) sixth annual Prospects Game, which was created to showcase the top 40 NHL draft-eligible players in the CJHL, the parent league announced on Nov. 25.

Norris and Rankin will play for Team East in the two-game, total-goal series against Team West at the Credit Union

Centre in Dauphin, Man. on Dec. 7 and 8.

The Team East roster is selected from the CJHL’s five eastern leagues, which include the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League, Ontario Junior Hockey League, Ligue de hockey junior AAA du Québec, Maritime Hockey League and CHL. Player selection is a joint initiative of the CJHL and NHL Central Scouting.

As of Dec. 6, Norris has 22 goals and 14 assists in 33 games, while Rankin has eight goals and 23 assists in 31 contests.

In total, 11 CJHL players were selected in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

Kanata Stallions goaltender Scott Shackell has been named the CHL’s Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 5.

The league made the announcement on Dec.7.

Shackell led the Stallions to two victories during the week as Kanata beat the highly-touted Pembroke Lumber Kings 4-3 in a shootout on Nov. 30 and then knocked off the Nepean Raiders 5-2 on Dec. 5.

The netminder sported a .932 save percentage in the two victories.

Since coming to Kanata from the Carleton Place Canadians with forward Zach Rodier in a deal for a third-round 2012 draft pick and a player development fee on Sept. 23, Shackell has been impressive.

The 20-year-old is 10-6-2 for the Stallions, with a 2.21 goals-against average, a .930 save percentage and two shutouts.

His play has helped the Stallions to a 12-15-5 record as of Dec. 5, which puts them in ninth place, three points behind the Ottawa Jr. Senators for the final play-off spot. The Stallions were 0-4-1 before Shackell was acquired.

The Kanata native was also named the league’s goaltender of the month for October for his efforts.

The Kanata Rangers Bantam C team won gold at the Brockville Girls’ Hockey Association Freeze Tournament held November 26 to the 28. The Rangers were victorious in a shoot-out against the Brockville Angels after being tied at 1 each after three regulation periods and two overtime periods.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: â&#x20AC;˘ Develops and maintains manufacturing routings for components and assemblies, which optimize production flow while minimizing total process costs and lead times. Develops and maintains set-up and run time estimates for each manufacturing operation. â&#x20AC;˘ Structures manufacturing bills of materials to optimize production flow while minimizing total process costs, inventories and lead times. Ensure accuracy of bills of materials. â&#x20AC;˘ Identifies tooling and fixture requirements to meet design specifications and reduce set-up time. Coordinates design, manufacture and/or procurement of tooling and fixtures. â&#x20AC;˘ Improves product manufacturability, reduces costs, and achieves Total Quality objectives by working closely with Engineering, Purchasing and Shop personnel. â&#x20AC;˘ Selects manufacturing batch quantities which are small enough to minimize inventory levels and avoid creating work centre bottlenecks, but large enough to avoid excessive set-up costs. â&#x20AC;˘ Schedules manufacture of components and assemblies to meet product completion schedules and customer requirements.

Monitors and reports progress. Identifies potential shortages and action required to meet schedule targets, and follows up as necessary. â&#x20AC;˘ Incorporates design changes into production to meet schedule requirements and minimize inventory write-off or rework costs. â&#x20AC;˘ Performs other duties as appropriate to this level.

BMGCA holds Christmas lights contest Rudolph won’t be the only one lighting up the night this Christmas, as residents in the Brookside, Briarbrook and Morgan’s Grant neighbourhoods get into the holiday spirit and decorate their homes for the annual Briarbrook and Morgan’s Grant Community Association (BMGCA) Lights Contest.

“I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love to see Christmas lights, and for at least a few weeks a year, at the start of the dreariness of winter, we get to turn our community into a festive wonderland,” said Paul Arbour, BMGCA’s newly elected president and the winner of last year’s contest.

This year, the BMGCA is pleased to partner with three local businesses from the Klondike Crossing plaza – Shopper’s Drug Mart, Willy’s Pizza and the Sippy Cup Café – to offer prize packages to the top three decorated houses in the community.

“The contest is a great way for people to get creative and make our community an even more beautiful place to live,” said Margaret Sambol, secretary for the BMGCA. Briarbrook and Morgan’s Grant residents are invited to nominate the best decorated houses in their neighbourhood by sending an email to bmgca.ca@ gmail.com with “BMGCA Lights Contest Nomination” in the subject line. The email should include the street address of the nominated home, the reasons why you admire the decorations and your name.

Houses will be judged on use of colour, overall esthetic and degree of difficulty.

A search and rescue for a missing Ottawa man ended last week after police and firefighters located him in Stony Swamp.

Ottawa police shut down Richmond Road between West Hunt Club Road and

Stonehaven Drive on Dec. 1, sending 15 firefighters, police, all terrain vehicles, an ambulance bus and paramedics.

A team of four police officers and three firefighters located the man 500 metres off the National Capital Commission walking trail’s parking lot at approximately 3:09 p.m.
