The battle for the Beaver Pond may not be over, according to Paul Renaud, a member of the Coalition to Save the South March Highlands.

“It’s unwise for any government to ignore the public that they represent,” he said. “Council made a mistake.

It’s not too late for them to fix that mistake.”

City council agreed to a land swap that will protect an 80-metre wide, 2.5-hectare trail connecting Trillium Woods to the Beaver Pond during a council meeting on Dec. 15.

“The land swap that was proposed is completely meaningless,” said Renaud.

“I think council isn’t fully apprised of all the facts.

The Beaver Pond forest is one of the largest eco reservoirs in this city. To reduce it all to smithereens is simply unwise.”

Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson tried to come up with a deal for the city to purchase more than 29 hectares of land in the area from KNL Developments to protect it from a 3,200-home subdivision planned for the area.

That idea fell apart last week.

“The first motion I had was to do the swap for the full 10 to 12 acres,” said Wilkinson.

She said after meeting with all the councillors, she only had three who were prepared to support her: Capital Coun. David Chernushenko, Somerset Coun.

“There were no funds,” she said.

“I didn’t want to fail miserably and not get anything.”

The Beaver Pond forest isn’t the only area that may be chopped down in 2011. Developers are also planning to ask the city for permission to cut down trees for another phase of its development near Kizell Pond.

Tree cutting can begin on that section once a tree preservation plan is submitted to the city, said city lawyer Timothy Marc at a Dec. 15 council meeting.

That’s because the land can be developed within the next two years, meaning there is a demand for housing in that area.

The land in question is about 60 hectares, approximately half of which is covered in trees, said KNL Developments spokesperson Mary Jarvis.

KNL plans to submit the tree preservation plan next year, and would start cutting trees as soon as the city signs off on the plan.

of six metres of trees in the backyards of the homes. The rest of the site needs to be clearcut to allow for roads, underground water and sewer works and other construction.

That buffer of trees is considered temporary, since the trees may need to be cut down to make way for a trench or to put in a fence that is required by the subdivision plan, Jarvis said.

Tree cutting near the Kizell Pond would follow on the footsteps of cutting and construction at KNL’s development site at the Beaver Pond forest.

Council didn’t pursue a plan to acquire 29 hectares of land near the Beaver Pond, which is part of Phase 9 of the development. That gave KNL the green light to start removing trees and building the subdivision.

Construction on that portion will begin early in the new year, Jarvis said.

Just after the holidays, all the Beaver Pond area trails will be closed off for at least two years while the site is under construction, Jarvis said.

The plan, which can be read at www. ottawasgreatforest.com, would focus on four key areas: • Mobilize financial support from community groups, corporations, funding agencies and individuals to remove all the city’s ongoing operating costs.

• Showcase the venerable old-growth forest, archaeology, wetland complexes and wildlife in the area in ways that would draw visitors to the city.

•Create a vision and plan of leveraging the value of the green infrastructure for ecotourism, education, dry-land training and recreation.

• Establish a mechanism for managing and working in tandem with local, provincial, national, corporate and

community agencies to achieve educational, conservational and financial objectives.

“We’ve created what we feel is a fair proposal to everyone, including the developer,” he said. “I think it’s important to recognize that council has not given the public an opportunity to present an alternative proposal.”

A BIG MISTAKE Renaud said council made a mistake in not buying the land.

“Our view is that it’s never too late to do the right thing,” he said. “It’s our job to convince council to do that.”

He said issues such as the stormwater management plans, loss of cultural heritage and the discovery of a possible 10,000-year-old aboriginal burial site need to be addressed.

“We’re bringing those matters forward to council, to get them to try to do the right thing and act on these genuine issues,” said Renaud. “Contrary to what some people might believe we’re not giving up, we’re not going away.”

Renaud said he wouldn’t be surprised to see people out protesting the destruction of the forest when KNL moves in to start cutting.

“It’s highly likely that when push comes to shove we might see people do extreme things. People believe Urbandale is not acting responsibly in this matter.”

Council wasn’t prepared to go to the Ontario Municipal Board because KNL could have won and the city could have ended up with nothing, she said, which is why they settled on saving the trail.

“That connecting link is important,” said Wilkinson. “It’s not as nice as saving the whole thing but it does make a huge different in accessing the natural environment lands.

“At one point I thought we were going to get nothing. They have no idea how hard it was to get what we got.”

She said KNL will begin cutting in early January and trails near the developer’s property will be closed for at least a year and a half, as well as the parking lot on Goulbourn Forced Road.

The walkways around the pond will remain open, she said.

“They could have started (construction) this week but they decided to leave it until after Christmas,” said Wilkinson.

She said there is still a fight ahead to save the lands close to Trillium Woods, which are part of KNL’s last phase of development.

“I think there’s still a role for people to play to save the lands close to Trillium Woods. Eventually they’re going to be asking for that too.”

Steve Hulaj, a member of the Coalition to Save the South March Highlands, said people in the group were saddened

that the decision was made to not move the issue to committee.

“The city deciding that it’s not prepared to go to the OMB in any and all cases where there is opportunity to do so is unfortunate. Saving an 80-metre wide path in a pristine forest demonstrates exactly what is happening throughout Ottawa – the destruction of wildlife and wilderness for nothing but money. I was hoping to hear we were better than that.”

“The location of the swap is the same, it’s just that we’re not getting 12 acres for 12 acres (5.2 hectares),” Wilkinson said.

“The park is getting smaller, but not by the same size as the corridor in Phase 9,” Jarvis said. “There will still be a very small amount of park,” she added, referring to open space in Phase 8. That phase isn’t expected to begin construction for another couple of years.

Disturbing lack of council debate Gentlemen, start your bulldozers and rev up those chainsaws.

The trees are coming down.

Ottawa city council has given the final thumbs up for KNL to start work on a housing development on 29 hectares of forest north of the Beaver Pond.

Saying council approved the development is a tad misleading.

You see, they didn’t actually debate the issue.

Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson said she couldn’t put a motion on the table asking council to buy the land because she didn’t have the support of council.

Didn’t have the support of the mayor.

Didn’t have the support of the west-end councillors even.

The only ones to offer even leukwarm support were councillors Shad Qadri, Diane Hol-

mes and David Chernushenko.

KNL had agreed to swap 2.5 hectares of land (in exchange for five hectares of land protected by the 40 per cent greenspace agreement) — but that offer was good only if council agreed to allow the development to proceed with no more roadblocks.

And if council persisted with its meddling, the threat of an OMB hearing loomed in the background.

Apparently, our newly-elected council doesn’t have the stomach to fight developers at the Ontario Municipal Board.

In their defence, this development has already been vetted through the OMB — its outcome was as much in doubt as the drum-head trials of the French Revolution.

Most irking in this non-decision, was that council didn’t even have the courtesy to debate the issue.

The matter was settled backstage, beyond the prying eyes of the pesky public.

Don’t want to raise a fuss, don’t you know.

Never mind the thousands of residents pressing to save a valuable forest.

Never mind the development never should have been approved in the first place.

Pass the buck, and focus on more important issues like saving money by not buying sandwiches for councillors during meetings.

The Beaver Pond decision raises a number of disturbing questions.

Will this council continue along the vein of settling issues backstage?

If so, why even bother with debating issues at council?

Might as well replace it with a muppet show — at least you’ll entertain the public.

Except that the only thing on the television set, aside from poker and wrestling and real housewives from somewhere, is a movie about a man and a woman who want to announce their engagement on Christmas Eve but can’t because Rudolf got lost on 34th Street and has to be rescued before the Christmas pageant can go on, and the man and the woman quarrel over some misunderstanding, meanwhile the Spirit of Christmas is being held hostage by an evil banker and only Hannah Montana can persuade him to let it go but first she has to sing a Christmas song and her band is stuck in a snowbank in Beverly Hills and none of the usual angels are available, so the call goes out to the neighbour’s collie dog . . .

That’s on every channel and you know how it turns out — with big fluffy globs

of snow falling slowly and everybody hugging and looking up in the air and saying “Happy Holidays” to each other.

The preponderance of Christmas movies on our airwaves must be particularly annoying to those of us who don’t celebrate Christmas, but it is annoying enough to everybody.

But just as all Christmas music is not icky — think of the traditional carols, the Messiah, even the Charlie Brown music of Vince Guaraldi — not all Christmas entertainment is pointless and insulting.

The play nativity just concluding its run at the National Arts Centre is an enjoyable combination of spirituality, music and farce.

Despite its irreverent treatment of the subject (coyotes in the manger!), it doesn’t seem to have offended anyone, which goes to show that audiences are more resilient and open-minded than they are often given credit for.

And of course there are the classic movies that you can watch again and again — the original Miracle on 34th Street, just about any version of A Christmas Carol, It’s a Wonderful Life (with its brilliant portrayal of the hellish life of Bedford Falls had there been no George Bailey).

A couple of the newer ones aren’t so bad. A Christmas Story (1983) has its moments and there is nothing like watching Billy Bob Thornton in Bad Santa to comfort the truly grouchy among us.

The problem is that Hollywood has to keep pumping out new holiday movies each year, the majority of which associate the miracles of the season mostly with couples getting engaged.

It all makes you look forward to the New Year, when people go back to doing what they do best on TV — running through hospitals and shooting at helicopters.

The elves at Katimavik Elementary School loaded up 17 vehicles with food, presents and clothes on Dec. 16.

The school has been adopting families throughout Ottawa for the past 30 years.

This year, Katimavik provided Christmas and holiday cheer to 17 families living in the area.

“They’re always really happy and really thankful,” said Isha Mittal, a Grade 6 student.

Each family gets two to three shopping carts full of food, gifts and clothes, depending on what they need.

Parents and volunteers offer their vehicles and time to drive around the city and deliver the goods to the families. “(The recipients), they’re so emotional,” said Chantal Heins, a teacher and the master elf behind the drive. “They only expect two boxes.”

The school works with the Shepherds of Good Hope to identify families in need.

The families go through a screening process and they provide the school with a list of dietary concerns, ages of children and what items are needed.

“Ninety-eight people will be receiving gifts and food today,” said Heins, who teaches Grade 2. “This is a group effort, a community effort. I’m trying to educate our students by reaching out to our own community.”

EXCITING PROCESS The students were full of excitement and eager to help fill up the vehicles lining the drive at the school.

“We’re really fortunate for what we have,” said Christine Murr, a Grade 6 student taking part in the drive for the first time. “Seeing them getting the gifts, it makes me really excited that we’re helping people.”

The students really enjoy being a part of the process, said Shirley Mander, a retired teacher from Katimavik Elementary who continues to volunteer with the holiday

drive.

“I think it shows the children that giving is something to be treasured,” said Mander, whose granddaughter now attends the school. “I think it helps them realize how fortunate they are.

“This year we’ve collected more than I’ve ever seen in gifts and food,” she said.

Every family gets a turkey, unless there are dietary or religious restrictions, in which case the family gets something else for the main course.

The library at the school was full of boxes each baring a number from one to 17, which represented each family the school adopted.

Family number five was the largest family the school adopted, with eight kids between the ages of 4 to 16.

“I think it’s important because there are some families who don’t have food or gifts for Christmas,” said Katherine Birkenhead, a Grade 7 student. “It makes me feel happy because other families are feeling happy and joy.”

Grade 5 teacher Trina Legault said it’s wonderful to see the students, parents and the community work together.

“The kids are enthusiastic about giving,” she said. “It’s a sense of community; everyone pulls together for one common goal.”

Manoj Mittal, Isha’s father and a volunteer driver for the past three years, said the hamper drive helps to give the students perspective on Christmas day.

“They’re helping families who live in the community,” he said. “There’s a lot of satisfaction. As a parent I try to see what else I can do.”

During this season of peace & goodwill it is with pleasure that we pause and express our best holiday wishes.

AN IMPORTANT PROJECT “I think it’s the most important project we do all year,” said Grade 5 teacher Will Maloley. “It’s the only one that involves the entire school.”

KOURIER-STANDARD STAFF Transportation is about more than roads, says Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson. It’s also about planning for cycling, pedestrians and transit infrastructure.

That’s the message Wilkinson sent to begin her term as chairperson of the

city’s transportation committee.

Committee members and chairs were chosen at council’s meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 15.

The transportation committee was the only committee that saw two members nominated to lead it.

Orleans Coun. Bob Monette’s name was put forward, but he declined to stay in the

running and Wilkinson was acclaimed.

Wilkinson will also sit on the Ottawa Public Library Board, the interim transit commission and the finance and economic development committee (called “FEDco�). She will also return to the information and technology subcommittee, which she previously led, as well as the audit and member services subcommit-

tees.

A holiday tale of fire safety and survival and call 911. Damage was kept to a minimum and no one was harmed.

Ottawa Fire Services would like to remind everyone to mix some simple precautions in with their holiday merriment.

The best way to protect your family and home from fire is to prevent one from starting in the first place. The most common causes of home fires during the holidays are candles and careless cooking. Alcohol is often a contributing factor.

Give yourself the gift of prevention by following these simple fire safety tips: • Always stay in the kitchen when cook-

ing something on the stove.

• Place lit candles away from anything that can burn and where they can’t be knocked over. Keep them out of the reach of children and pets. Remember to snuff out candles before leaving the room or going to bed.

• Make sure extension cords are in good working order and never run them under carpets.

• Drink responsibly. Many fire deaths are caused by people attempting to cook or smoke while impaired.

• Turn your tree off when you’re not in

the room.

If a fire does occur, take these steps to give yourself the gift of escape: • Have working smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas.

• Develop and practice a home fire escape plan so that everyone in your home knows what to do if the smoke alarms sound.

• If your clothes catch on fire, remember to stop, drop and roll.

While the holiday season can be one of the most festive times of the year, it is also surrounded by fire hazards.

An Ottawa couple learned this lesson on Dec. 8 after a fire broke out in the basement of their home. However, they also proved that working smoke alarms can save lives.

While sleeping at 5:43 a.m. the couple was awakened by all three smoke alarms in their Terrebonne Drive home.

A candle in the basement had set off a fire in the middle of the night.

493 teams to vie for Bell Capital Cup

Over 8,000 hockey players will descend on Ottawa from Dec. 29 to Jan. 3 for the 12th annual Bell Capital Cup. The tournament, which runs from Dec. 30 to Jan. 3, will see teams come from as far as Beijing, China.

“Average-wise, I’d say we are expecting around 8,380 players,” said Matt Bennett, the general manager for the Bell Capital Cup. Last year’s cup saw 8,500 players take part.

Players from 19 divisions will take to the ice during the five-day competition, with 493 teams vying for a championship spot.

“When everything is all said and done we’ll have 993 games played,” said Bennett.

Fourteen teams will be attending from various parts of Europe and Asia, and for the first time South Korea will take part in the cup tournament, said Bennett.

Ottawa, December 14, 2010 How do we first learn about Emergency Rooms (ER)?

We’re getting better.

I was 12, visiting a farm in Cantley, Quebec. My brother Stan and I spent hours exploring the barn.

Yet the system is slowest for those waiting for admission to a hospital bed. The target wait time in this case is 8 hours. Here, we have not improved.

We found hay stacked from ceiling to floor. We jumped from bales perched several meters up, to those down below.

Why?

The fun lasted until Stan took aim at pile of hay from high above, and landed on a floor, hidden under only centimeters of hay. There was a loud “crack!” He got up holding his broken arm. He turned pale. We ran for help.

My mother drove him to the closest ER. The wait took forever. I didn’t see him until next morning.

How much has changed? Long ER wait times are still the norm.

But there’s been significant progress. Dedicated nurses, doctors and other health professionals ensure most emergency patients receive timely care.

Take our hospital, for instance. Critically injured patients and those with life threatening conditions are seen within moments.

Otherwise, an ER nurse aims to see a patient within 15 minutes, assigning them to one of three streams of care.

Zoe Gong of W. Erskine Johnston Public School won a bronze medal in pre-novice ladies at the Skate Canada 2011 Challenge where the top four skaters from each of the 13 sections across Canada compete.

It took place in Mississauga, Ontario from Dec. 1 to 5.

NHL Ottawa Senators alumni will be present, along with a Hockey Hall of Fame exhibit and a sports memorabilia auction with funds going to the MakeA-Wish Foundation of Eastern Ontario, said Bennett.

“It’s just to kind of welcome everybody into town and get everybody in the mood for the week ahead,” he said.

“We’re hoping to make it an annual event.”

Players also get the added bonus of attending an Ottawa Senators game.

“On Dec. 29 we’re going to send 6,100 kids to the Sens game against Carolina, and about 500 kids to the Leafs (vs. Sens) game (on Jan. 1),” said Bennett.

He said the Bell Capital Cup is expected to bring in around $15 million for the local economy.

Tournament passes sell for $12 and cover all five days. Adult day passes go for $5, senior day passes for $3. Children under 12 attend for free. Ticket sales are used to support local minor hockey associations and charities.

Two CHL alumni have been picked by hockey great Mark Messier to play for Canada at the upcoming 2010 Spengler Cup. Former Nepean Raiders goaltender Tyler Moss and Kanata Valley Lasers defenceman Cory Murphy were selected by Messier – the team’s head coach – on Dec. 16.

Moss played with the Raiders during the 1991-92 season before moving onto the Ontario Hockey League’s Kingston Frontenacs.

The Ottawa native was drafted in the

second round, 29th overall of the 1993 NHL draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning and went onto play for the Calgary Flames, Carolina Hurricanes and Vancouver Canucks.

The 35-year-old currently plays for Langnau of the Swiss league.

Murphy, 32, played for Kanata before moving onto Colgate University in 1997.

The Kanata native played 91 career NHL games for the Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning and New Jersey Devils, recording nine goals and 27 assists.

Murphy signed a two-year contract to play for the ZSC Zurich Lions last June and has seven goals and 16 assists through 33 games for the Swiss-A league team.

A novice hockey team is bringing a little Christmas cheer to a financially-struggling local family.

The Kanata Hurricanes is sponsoring a couple and their four children and have raised $1,300 to buy presents and food for them.

Everyone contributed what they could, said the team’s head coach, David Sik, with some of the seven-year-old players offering their allowance for the cause.

“It’s awesome,” said Sik. “The generosity from the parents has been amazing. It’s a hard time of the year.”

The team came up with the idea from an article in last year’s Kourier-Standard, said Sik, about another team who raised money to give Christmas to a local family. One of the player’s families kicked things off with a substantial donation.

The Kanata Hurricanes raised $1,300 to buy presents and food for a local family this Christmas.

“Our goalie put up $30 of his own money,” he said.

On Christmas, each of the four children from the family will receive a brand new pair of Asics running shoes and a variety of toys and presents.

The coach asked the family for a wish list and the parents submitted a list of items, but asked for nothing for themselves.

But the team decided to include a few items for mom and dad anyways.

Sik and his wife shopped at local

stores buying staple goods like toilet paper, Kleenex, a case of Kraft Dinner, canned goods and soap, as well as a turkey and all the fixings.

“It’s been a lot of work organizing it,” said Sik. “But I’d do it all over again.”

The fundraiser has taught the Hurricanes the true meaning of Christmas, he added.

“What they’re taking away from this is there are kids who have less than us,” Sik said. “This could also be us.

“Christmas is not just about gifts under the tree,” said Sik. “It’s about giving too.”

Michael Curry, 7, said it felt good helping others during the holiday season.

“We got to help people,” he said.

Reid Wilson, 7, said it was nice to help others during Christmas.

Watch out Winterlude.

The National Capital Commission’s annual February event will face a little competition in the city’s west end this year.

The Kanata Chamber of Commerce is looking to organize a winter festival for western Ottawa on Feb. 5-6 (the first week of Winterlude) in Kanata, Goulbourn and West Carleton.

It is contacting businesses and community groups, encouraging them to hold both outdoor and indoor events during the west-end’s version of Winterlude.

“If you want to get outside and enjoy winter you can do it on this side of town,” said Megan Cornell, president of the Kanata Chamber.

A west-end winter festival will only serve to enhance Winterlude, providing outdoor activities closer to home for west-end residents, she added.

“The NCC has a mandate to expand

Winterlude out of the downtown core so they might be interested in what we’re doing and supporting it.”

The Kanata Chamber chose the Feb. 5 and 6 dates because that is when the Kanata-Hazeldean Lions Club holds its annual winter events at the Lion Dick Brule Community Centre in Glen Cairn.

Every year the Lions club offers sleigh rides, a pancake breakfast and arts and crafts activities the weekend of Feb. 5 and 6.

The chamber has contacted a number of community associations in Kanata and the response has been all positive, she said.

“We’ve got a number of community associations who’ve said yes,” she said. “Some community associations are just coming on board – it’s really in its infancy right now.

The Kanata Lakes Community Association has agreed to participate and is planning to sell beaver tails at the Beaver Pond and offer skating (if the pond is sufficiently frozen).

“It sounds really exciting and what a great time to have an event like this,” said Gary Sealey, president of the Kanata Beaverbrook Community Association.

“I’m looking forward to hearing more of the details and how we can help.”

Some groups will need time to recruit volunteers before they will commit to joining the event.

“We’re aware of it right now; we’re looking for people who are interested in running with the project,” said Margaret Kellaway, president of the Bridlewood Community Association.

The BCA needs people to help run it, she said.

“At the moment we haven’t committed to it, we need the manpower first.”

The Stittsville Village Association has opted out of organizing an event, as it is holding its annual winter festival during the end of February.

“It just means someone else must spear ahead,” said Cornell.

But that doesn’t rule out some other organization from stepping forward to organize and hold an event or events during the west-end winter festival, said Cornell.

Dancers dazzle at Christmas showcase All Saints students ring in the holidays JESSICA CUNHA jessica.cunha@metroland.com

The dance class at All Saints Catholic High School wowed students, staff and parents during the annual Christmas showcase on Dec. 17.

“It was fantastic,” said teacher and co-ordinator Ann Marie Vanneste. “I think it was the best one.

The audience was really entertained.”

The school set up 1,000 chairs in the gym and each one was occupied.

So many people turned out to watch it was standing-room only, said Vanneste whose been teaching for 13 years.

“I was pretty blown away. The whole wall was filled with parents.”

It was the ninth annual Christmas show at the school and over 200 students took part in 32 acts.

The last day before Christmas holidays is a traditionally light day for attendance at most schools, said Vanneste.

“The kids that come to school on the last day of school want to be

there. It becomes a tradition where it’s a really fun day.”

She first started the Christmas assembly to showcase her semester one dance class.

“I created the Christmas assembly where the dancers do get to perform and other kids get to audition and perform their talents as well,” she explained. “The main reason is because second semester I put on a huge dance show. I had to create something for my dancers to perform at first semester.”

And boy can they dance.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT With the dancers all decked out in sparkly red dresses and reindeer antlers, Vanneste held a full dress rehearsal the day before the show to ensure everything would work smoothly.

Her dancers range in ability and style from jazz and ballet to hip-hop and contemporary, and some with little to no dance background at all.

But you can’t tell them apart.

Lauren Snuggs, a Grade 10 dance student, said she joined the class “to get out of my comfort zone.”

She said the pep talk the dancers get from Vanneste helps to calm everyone’s nerves.

“I’m looking forward to (the show) but I get nervous very easily,”

she said.

“It’s exciting,” said classmate Gina MacDonald. “Everyone else is pretty nervous too, so that helps.”

The girls said they like to listen to the radio and sing along really loudly to pump themselves up.

They all gather in a circle, hold hands and pray before a show.

“The best part is when your friends come up after and say ‘that was really cool,’” said Hailey Cuddihey, a Grade 10 student who takes dance outside of school, with a focus on jazz, tap and lyrical.

One thing all the girls agreed on was that they had a great teacher.

“Ms. Vanneste’s great, make sure you get that in there,” they said.

With full make-up, costumes and stage props, the show doesn’t typify a regular high school assembly.

“They feel like a million bucks up there,” said Vanneste about those who get to perform. “I’m really anal about how I do the show. I was strict and it paid off. The kids get a chance to feel like they’re in a real show.

“It’s really special to see the growth. It touches your heart.”

She said two hours of entertaining students isn’t easy, but the show is something everyone has come to look forward to.

“It’s a whole heck of a lot of work but when it’s all done, it’s worth it.”

Directed by Andrew Williams, this funtastical musical— which is playing at Kanata Theatre during the last week of December—weaves together some of Dr. Seuss’s most famous tales and characters in unexpected ways.

The one-act musical incorporates bits and pieces from as many as 15 different Dr. Seuss stories, and has 6 performances for you to catch.

In Seussical we follow along with Horton the Elephant as he discovers a tiny world of the Whos, existing on a speck of dust. He

takes on the duty of protecting this newly discovered world while a cast of quirky and unusual characters join him.

Director Williams, who is second generation Kanata Theatre, has said there are great rewards that come from working with a big cast of varying ages. The cast of 28 members spans in age from nine years old all the way to adulthood and operates as a big family.

Another reason the cast has come together so easily as a family is party because many of them are related. There are more then a few family members sharing duties both on and off stage, brothers and sisters, parents and children.

Clare Flockton, who plays the Sour Kangaroo is excited to be sharing the stage with her 11-year-old daughter, Abbey, who

appears as a Who. “It’s great fun to do a family show with your own family,” says Flockton.

Kyra Weichert, who plays Mayzie La Bird, says “I have made friends from the production that have now become like family.”

Sue Levy-Rick and Kathy Paunins started a fundraising effort last year to build a school in Sierra Leone with the help of their grades 2 and 3 classes.

Through the students’ efforts, and generosity of the school, they managed to raise over $6,000 during the school year.

This year they are ramping up their efforts in hopes of seeing the school completed, stocked with supplies and students.

“Our big goal was to have the children reaching out,” said Levy-Rick, who teaches grades 2 and 3. “All the activities

Buy-A-Tile: Buy your place in the future What does it take to build a modern state of the art Recreation Center? A supportive community - just ask Councillor Marianne Wilkinson.

One of Councillor Wilkinson’s stated goals, during her last campaign, was to see the completion of Kanata’s new Recreational Centre by 2012 (KanataRec 2012). The new facility is about to go under tender. One of the unusual features of the massive building is an eight lane swimming pool.

“The City has a policy to support the building of six lanes for our pools.” Wilkinson said. “We knew before we started building that six lanes would not accommodate our community’s needs.”

The Community Steering Committee, Chaired by Steve Hulaj presented a plan to add two extra lanes to the building. The City agreed as long as the community raised the extra 1.75 Million dollars the extra lanes will cost.

Terry Sheldon, Chair of the KanataRec 2012 Fund Raising Committee, is spearheading an ambitious, multi-staged campaign (see ad this page) to raise “those necessary bucks!”

“This is nothing if not a worthwhile cause,” Sheldon said. “Our burgeoning Kanata community has long outgrown its once generous recreational facilities. KanataRec 2012 is designed to meet community needs for today and well into the future.

“Community is key. The idea behind KanataRec 2012 is that it will be a facility created, in no small part, by the people and for the people.”

As Sheldon tells it, community involvement at every stage is key to the project’s success. “Steve Hulaj, a community pheom, well known for his active, continuing, leadership in spearheading the move to save Kanata’s South March Highlands and Beaver Pond, Chaired the Steering Committee. Now they have turned the next stage over to the Fund-Raising Committee.

“I believe that with the support and involvement of Kanata residents, we will see the ribbon cut, the facility opened, and the first swimmers into the pool in 2012. But to do that we need the Community’s help.”

Buy-A-Tile, a fund-raising incentive kicking off today, just in time for Christmas, will allow individuals, families and, ultimately corporations, to “buy into the future,” in Sheldon’s words.

Theoretically, the pool is composed of 32,000 individual tiles of which 10,000 are being made available, on a one-time basis, to buy in support of the new Centre.

“We’re going to start releasing those first 10,000 tiles to the public immediately – just in time for Christmas,” explains Sheldon. “But it’s a limited unique opportunity. Once they’re gone they’re gone!

“Talk about getting the perfect present for the person who has everything! From grandmothers to toddlers, to that difficult friend ... spend ten bucks, yes just ten dollars, and you not only get a personalized, numbered certificate but your name (or the name of the person for whom you buy the tile) will be spelled out on the walls of the centre.”

Furthermore, “Your name, or the name of that special person as well as their tile number, is immortalized. It’s there from the time the pool opens and remains there for the life of the pool; the owner’s own particular future footprint.”

But this will only happen with the first ten thousand tiles. “These will never, ever be re-sold,” Sheldon stated categorically, adding “and if people are inspired to dive down and see their tile site, a map showing the numbered placements will be displayed on the wall.”

The rule is one tile per name. If a family of four buy four tiles “they’ll obviously be in a block of four tiles,” explained Sheldon – and as for buying, “we’re making it easy and – most important at this time of year – affordable.”

After payment (credit cards and cheques are accepted: see ad this page) the donor receives an attractive certificate with an area left blank for the name of the individual receiving the gift. Each certificate also bears the number of a tile that matches the legend on the wall of the Centre where every tile is identified.

“Affordability is very important,” said Sheldon. “We want as many people as possible to get involved and to know that through their investment, they take ownership in an important facility that Kanata has needed for some time.

“They don’t get an education.”

“If we help build a school there, they can learn a lot more,” said Carson Norkum, a Grade 4 student who took part in the efforts last year.

“Other people need to learn, not just us,” said Elizabeth Tackabury, a Grade 2 student.

Paunins said she and Levy-Rick wanted the students to learn not everyone has the same opportunities.

“We wanted them (the students) to think about others and not just themselves.”

This year, the two classes have raised close to $2,000 in three months.

“We sold candygrams,” said Thungath-

urti.

Over 4,000 of the treats were sold from Nov. 29 to Dec. 10.

The students had to advertise the candy grams by making posters, put the treat bags together and deliver them to the students in other classes, said Paunins.

“We’d like to see the school be completed,” she said. She and Levy-Rick are hoping once construction is finished they can set up correspondence with those who will attend the Sierra Leone school.

Members of Free The Children are visiting Roch Carrier in January.

After learning of the classes’ efforts to build a school, they were chosen to take part in a workshop.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for the kids,” said Levy-Rick. “We want to get the kids to become ambassadors of change.”
