When words fails rely on the international language of mini-sticks and outdoor hockey said the families who hosted a team from Budapest, Hungary during the week of the Bell Capital Cup Tournament.

The Kanata Blazers minor peewee B team provided room and board for nine players from the Budapest Drago Scorpions Dec. 29 to Jan. 4.

It was an opportunity to meet people from a different country, and explore cultural differences while enjoying a weekend playing hockey in the largest annual tournament iof its kind n the world, said Diane McFaul, who invited Gabor Bugar, 11, and Kristof Priesinger, 11, into her home during the tournament.

“It’s been very good,” said McFaul. “The language is about the only barrier.”

Her son, Adam Freeman, 11, said he and his two new friends from Hungary used an iPod application to translate English into Hungarian and back again.

“Kristoff speaks a bit of English and Gabor doesn’t speak anything,” he said.

But that didn’t stop the trio from playing a little bit of pickup hockey in the driveway or participating in a friendly duel of Nerf gun combat.

“The three of them look at each other and don’t say a word and then they start pointing and playing with each other,” said McFaul.

Mate Salacz, 10, the goaltender for the Draco Scorpions, said he was very happy to visit Kanata and participate in the Bell Capital Cup. Mate said he likes to play hockey on the Xbox video game system and watch NHL games on television.

News in review: July to December A mid-summer heat-wave, the battle over Constance Bay Beach, the Terry Fox Extension – 2010 was an eventful year in Kanata. This week’s issue looks at the biggest news stories covered in the Kourier-Standard from July to December.

JULY • The Kourier-Standard published a three-part series, Beach battle, about the fight over the Constance Bay waterfront from July 8 to July 22.

Landowners along the shoreline said the beach is private property. The hundreds of people from the city’s west end who regularly use the beach said it’s traditionally public property.

The Kourier-Standard spoke with waterfront property owners, members of the group Friends against Privatizing Constance Bay Beaches, West Carleton Coun. Eli El-Chantiry, Ottawa Chief of Police Vern White and city lawyer Tim Marc.

The landowners said they own to the water. Beachgoers said anything below the high-tide line is public property.

The police decided they would no longer respond to trespassing calls since it wasn’t clear who owned to where along the beach. It was decided that to get a final verdict, one of the sides would have to go to court and get a final decision from a judge.

• Temperature soared to 45 C with the humidex as a heat wave blanketed the city. The Kourier-Standard sought out and spoke with those who have to work in the blistering heat with no air conditioning or sometimes even shade.

The hottest jobs in Kanata included laying gravel for sidewalks, golf club maintenance crews, lifeguards and working a chip wagon.

• KNL said nothing will stop them from developing the lands around the Beaver Pond and turning it into a 3,200 home subdivision. More than 150 people packed themselves into the Mlacak Centre during a public meeting to discuss the development.

Wilkinson prevented KNL from starting work on July 19 as originally planned, until the company completed a set of conditions, including a tree conservation plan.

• The South March Highlands Carp River Conservation Inc. dropped its injunction to halt the continued construc-

tion of the Terry Fox Drive extension on Thursday, July 8. The motion would have put a stop to construction of the roadway while waiting for judicial review. The city also halted its motion for a $50,000 security deposit.

• More than 100 people attended the “no dump” protest, organized by the West End Coalition on June 22.

The City of Ottawa was fighting a proposal by Waste Management Canada to open a new landfill site that would take in 400,000 tonnes of trash every year for the next decade.

Waste Management submitted its terms of reference for an environmental assessment of the landfill expansion.

• Kanata residents looked back with worry on July 26, one year after the huge rainstorm that flooded hundreds of homes in the west-end.

The Kourier-Standard spoke with residents about their worries, the precautions taken and how it’s affected their home insurance.

AUGUST • Kanata band Amos The Transparent finds out its headed to Brisbane, Australia in September for the BIGSOUND 2010 Music Industry Summit and Showcase.

The band is one of two Canadian acts who were asked to perform at the event on behalf of Canadian Music Week.

• Kanata guitarist Lucas Haneman, 23, won the second annual i Factor, a national musical competition for people with vision loss at the Canadian National Institute for the Blind’s Lake Joseph Centre in Muskoka, Ont. on Aug. 7.

• Morgan’s Grant residents phoning to complain about a loss of water service overloaded the City of Ottawa’s 311 service on Aug. 17.

A contractor accidently knocked off a cap to a water main on the corner of March and Klondike roads on Aug. 17, causing a loss of water service from 8 to 10:30 p.m for hundreds of residents.

• Christian “CEE” Ancheta, the Katimavik man who flew through the Toronto auditions of So You Think You Can Dance Canada didn’t make the cut during the finals.

During day three of the finals audi-

tions the judges cut Ancheta after his ballroom routine that aired Aug. 19.

• Kanata native Tyler Kealey returned from a month-long tour of China, where he performed 11 shows, starting in Guangzhou in May. • Adam Dewan, former assistant coach of the Ottawa 67’s took over as the new bench boss of the Kanata Stallions.

After running through four head coaches over the past two years, the Stallions were looking for stability, said Lou Nistico, the team’s general manager.

Dewan replaced Vince Malette, who left the team after accepting a job as head coach of a team in the German Elite League. Dewan, 30, grew up playing minor league hockey in Kanata and for the Ottawa Valley Titans before he was drafted by the Peterborough Petes and then played professionally in Germany.

Detectives who canvassed the street learned that someone had broken into three sheds on Country Lane the morning of the fire – the jerry can belonged to a neighbour four houses down the street from Seth’s home.

• An Algonquin elder held a special tobacco offering, blessing and prayer for the South March Highlands, where nearly 100 people gathered at the Beaver Pond for the special ceremony the night of a full moon on Aug. 24.

Beaver Pond gets special blessing from Algonquin elder Albert DuMont, a poet and elder in residence of Iskotew Lodge, Health Canada, said the forest is a sacred place and the rocky landscape has endured unchallenged for thousands of years – the Beaver Pond lands is the only land mass in the Ottawa-area that never fell underneath the waters of the Champlain Sea. SEPTEMBER • An elder of the Algonquin First Nations called for a stop to all development of the South March Highlands in September.

William Commanda, a 96-year-old Algonquin elder and spiritual elder, made the comments in Remarks Regarding Development at South March Highlands, a paper signed by him and Romola Thumbadoo. He said the lands are of “extremely important archaeological significance to the nomadic Algonquins of the Ottawa River watershed and beyond.”

Evidence emerged regarding its occupation by Algonquin ancestors 10,000 years ago.

• The city held public meetings with areas affected by the 2009 flood to talk about control measures.

City officials met with residents on Kanata North on Sept. 7 and KatimavikHazeldean on Sept. 13. Both areas were to be refitted with new manhole covers to prevent water from entering the sanitary system.

• City council voted to begin negotiations to buy a piece of land between the Beaver Pond and Trillium Woods on Sept. 8.

Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson said it would cost the city $300,000 to $500,000 to preserve the natural pathway that would link the future Kanata North Recreation Complex to the Beaver Pond.

Council also passed a second motion to ask the National Capital Commission (NCC) to think about acquiring property in the South March Highlands.

March Highlands was deferred until Nov. 17. City council directed staff to report on the impact of a delay on plans to extend services and new roads in the area.

• It was announced the NHL all-star game would be coming to Kanata in 2012 on Sept. 15. The game will be played at Scotiabank Place as part of the Ottawa Senators’ 20th anniversary celebrations.

• The Terry Fox Run celebrated its 30th anniversary. Schools across Kanata took part, hosting their own runs and raising donations for the Terry Fox Foundation.

Holy Trinity Catholic High School broke its goal of raising $30,000 for 30 years, raising close to $40,000.

• Earl of March Secondary School went green with the installation of 10 kilowatt MicroFIT solar devices installed on the roof in September as part of the Renewable Energy Funding for Schools program.

• City council gave a thumbs up for the Kanata North recreation complex in September. Construction was expected to start in the spring of 2011 and finish in the fall of 2012.

The 9,848-square-metre building will feature an eight-lane swimming pool, a skateboard park, two outdoor basketball courts, a gymnasium and fitness centre, community meeting rooms and a water play area.

• The Carleton Place Canadians traded veteran goaltender Scott Shackell and offensive threat Zach Rodier to the Kanata Stallions on Sept. 23, for a third-round 2012 draft pick and a player development fee.

• The Kanata Chamber of Commerce and the Kourier-Standard hosted a mayoral candidates meeting at the Brookstreet Hotel on Sept. 15. More than 250 people turned out to watch the candidates clash over taxes and leadership styles.

OCTOBER • On Oct. 6, a motion to delay development on 29 hectares of land in the South

• The city geared up all year for the municipal elections which took place on Oct. 25. Many new faces joined veteran councillors after the city cast its vote.

Jim Watson took over as mayor from incumbent Larry O’Brien, while it was a tight race between Kanata North Coun.

Wilkinson received 4,156 votes while Seeton finished a close second with 3,704 votes. Incumbent Kanata South Coun.

Peggy Feltmate announced her retirement, which paved the way for a win by Allan Hubley, who said he would impose a two-term limit on himself.

• More than 100 people held a vigil of hope for a 14-year-old Glen Cairn boy battling cancer at Walter Baker Park on Oct. 28.

Friends and family of Brodie Rafter stood together at the Kinsmen Baseball Diamond outside the Kanata Recreation Complex holding Candles of Hope in support of Brodie and all those who have battled cancer. Brodie was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in October 2009.

He completed his second round of chemotherapy, radiation treatment and a stem-cell infusion after learning his cancer, an aggressive form of Hodgkins, had returned last spring.

Schools collected surveys from students to develop an anti-bullying plan, as mandated by the Ontario Safe School Act.

• Canadian Parents of Murdered Children and Other Survivors of Homicide Victims, held their first support group meeting at the Kanata Baptist Church on Nov. 1.

The support group also launched its website in November, offering information about support services and a forum: http://cpomc.ca.

• Krisha Stanton, who was sueing the Ottawa Catholic School Board for not protecting her daughter from bullying, settled out of court. She filed the lawsuit last February, alleging her daughter was tormented by her Grade 3 classmates at St. Isidore Catholic School in 2007-08.

Stanton was seeking $325,000 in damages; both sides agreed not to disclose the details of the settlement reached earlier this year.

• Hundreds of friends, family and members of the hockey community at large gathered at the Scotiabank Place on Nov. 17 to celebrate the life of Daron Richardson.

Daron – the daughter of former NHL defenceman and Ottawa Senators assistant coach Luke Richardson – died in hospital on Nov. 13 after complications from a suicide attempt the previous day. She was 14 years old.

• Before digging into a pared-down selection of cookies and coffee, new Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson stressed the need for council to “pinch pennies” and work together.

Watson gave his first official speech as mayor during the 2010-14 council inauguration ceremony held at the Shenkman Arts Centre in Orleans on Dec. 1.

• Two Kanata Stallions were selected to play in the 2011 CHL All-Star Game when the league announced its rosters on Dec. 21. Left winger Kyle Rankin and goaltender Scott Shackell will compete for the Yzerman Division team at the Jan. 12 game, which will be played at the Bell Sensplex.

• The discovery of a possible 10,000-yearold aboriginal burial site is unlikely to halt or delay a KNL subdivision slated for construction on land north of the Beaver Pond, said Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson in December.

• The Katimavik-Hazeldean Community Association is asking the city to make all of the community’s parks on-leash for dogs. Residents are complaining about randomly-encountered dog poop, stray dogs and safety concerns, said Rod McLean, the president of the community association.

• The Ontario Ministry of the Environment approved Waste Management Canada’s terms of reference for an environmental assessment of a proposal to build a 36-hectare landfill at the Carp Road dump that will accept up to 400,000 tonnes of waste per year for 10 years.

• The fight to save the Beaver Pond lands ended with a deal to save less than three hectares of the environmentally sensitive forest.

City council agreed on Dec. 15 to a land swap with KNL. The company offered to provide an 80-metre wide corridor linking the Beaver Pond to Trillium Woods in exchange for twice the amount of land set aside as green space for the city. Kanata North Coun.

• CHL alumni and Kanata Valley Lasers defenceman Cory Murphy was picked by hockey great Mark Messier to play for Canada at the upcoming 2010 Spengler Cup on Dec. 16.

• The Beaver Pond forest isn’t the only area that may be chopped down in 2011.

Developers are also planning to ask the city for permission to cut down trees for another phase of its development near Kizell Pond.

Tree cutting can begin on that section once a tree preservation plan is submitted to the city, said city lawyer Timothy Marc at a Dec. 15 council meeting. KNL plans to submit the tree preservation plan in 2011.

Mate has only studied English for a few years, and his billet buddy, Laszlo Jakab, 10, doesn’t speak any English at all.

“Mate kind of translates for Laszlo,” said Jack Hochreiter, 11, whose family billeted the two Hungarian players.

Tyler Bates, 11, who paired up with Jack as player co-hosts, said hockey is a universal language.

“We all love hockey,” Tyler said.

The Kanata Blazers were one of the Ottawa minor hockey teams who provided billets for 11 European and Korean teams travelling to Ottawa to compete in the Bell Capital Cup. Three teams from China also participated in the tournament, but they stayed in hotels.

The general manager of the Bell Capital Cup, Matt Bennett, a coach of a peewee team in Kanata, asked a few of his fellow coaches in the Kanata Minor Hockey Association if their teams would be interested in providing billets for the visiting Europeans.

“Our team had an overwhelming response,” said Julie Bell, the wife of Steve Bell, the coach of the Kanata Blazers minor peewee B team.

“Everybody is really keen,” said Bell.

“We have a great group of families who like to get involved.”

Each of the families took turns billeting two players.

“We thought we’d leave them in pairs because of the language factor – they don’t speak much English,” said Bell.

“Everybody thought it would be a oncein-a-lifetime experience to live with kids from the tournament and just for the kids to be exposed to a different culture that they’ve never been exposed to.”

The Blazers and Scorpions first met over the Internet, exchanging photographs and emails, a practice they plan on continuing when the Scorpions return home.

“Most families emailed back and forth with the families,” said Bell.

Players from the two teams attended an Ottawa Senators game versus the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday, Dec. 29, and attended a New Year’s Eve party at the home of one of the Blazers families.

James Hanlon, the owner of the Hanlon Tour Company, which arranged the travel of the 14 atom and peewee teams from Europe and Asia who participated in the tournament, said billeting allows players to enjoy a cultural exchange as well as a hockey experience.

“A lot of these kids remain friends for the next three to four years, especially with MSN and all that,” said Hanlon.

Over 100 people turned out with candles lit for a walk along the Beaver Pond on a foggy and unseasonably warm winter evening on Jan. 1.

People bowed their heads as a moment of silence was held for the lands.

“It was simply an acknowledgement that they were sad, that we could be losing that area,” said Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson.

However, those in attendance said they wouldn’t give up without making their point heard. Many signed up to start protesting outside Urbandale’s offices, part of KNL Developments.

“We now have a permit for picketing Urbandale’s offices,” said Steve Hulaj, a member of the Coalition to Save the South March Highlands.

The date to begin picketing had not been chosen at the time of publication, but those interested can visit the Facebook page, “I want to save the land North of Beaver Pond Park in Kanata, Ontario,” for updated information, said Allison Penner, who is helping with the organization.

The developers will begin cutting down trees this month after a revision for the 80-metre wide, 2.5-hectare path connecting Trillium Woods to the Beaver Pond is completed, said Wilkinson. They can start cutting as soon as the pathway has been marked.

There is also the possibility of losing some of the 40 per cent lands marked for preservation to stormwater ponds, she said.

Kizell Pond was recently declared an environmentally sensitive wetland, which means that body of water can no longer be used for drainage.

“No more drainage can go into Kizell, which means we could need stormwater ponds built,” said Wilkinson. The stormwater ponds have to be built in an open area, which is why the 40 per cent lands could be at risk, unless the developers build them off-site.

There has been talk about diverting excess flow into the Beaver Pond area, said Wilkinson. The city is

“Our City of Ottawa is allowing the most bio-diverse area in the entire region to be clear-cut, then blasted flat,” said Hulaj in an email.

He said the city is cutting corners and ignoring laws and procedures in refusing to do a new archaeological study in light of the fact that a 10,000-year-old aboriginal burial site was uncovered.

“What I heard was the comment that they, the builders, have really no other areas to build in Kanata,” said Hulaj. “Why is society allowing laws and procedures to be ignored, as well as the respect for our heritage, when all we’re asking for is to wait for one more season to do an archeological study? The only answer that came out of the city is (the developers) need land to build on.

“So what we’re saying is

GREENBELT STILL A POSSIBILITY A portion of the South March Highlands may still be included in the National Capital Commissions’ Greenbelt master plan, said Wilkinson.

There is a possibility to turn areas of the South March Highlands into a “finger” of the city’s Greenbelt.

Wilkinson said the NCC told her it would release a list of options sometime in January or February of this year.

“They didn’t specify which part of the South March Highlands,” she said. “They just told me that at least one of the scenarios will include the South March Highlands.”

The public will have 90 days to comment on the options once they are released.

“Anything is possible until it’s actually built on,” said Wilkinson.

At this point the city is not requesting a new archaeological study be conducted, said Wilkinson.

Since Aboriginal artifacts have been found in the area many First Nations have written to the mayor asking to halt the development and conduct a new assessment of the area.

“If the Algonquins pressure the city I don’t know what the response will be,” said Wilkinson.

Therapeutic benefits of winter Forget the fact that there is a potential risk of hypothermia, heart attacks, or death, hundreds of intrepid dippers have braved the winter weather to take a dip in frigid waters in January for a number of causes.

Ottawa’s Polar Bear Club held its third annual fundraising event for the President’s Choice Children’s Charity on January 1.

Supervising the event was Steve Stewart, also known as Speedo Steve. An experienced dipper, Stewart was a member of the original club, which was started by the Rideau-Osgoode Karate Club. He resurrected the Polar Bear Club after the tradition was discontinued years ago on the Rideau River.

The number of people who swear by polar dipping, say there are many therapeutic

qualities.

The benefits can be very great — it can stimulate mental processes, produce hormones which make the body able to cope with physical stresses and can increase the level of mental awareness and a feeling of well-being. It can also release stress, remove aches and pains, increase vitality and keep skin looking younger.

Many even treat their asthma or arthritis with cold water swimming.

Benefits of polar dipping outweigh the risk factors, so they say. Aside from shocking the circulatory system it can produce a warm afterglow and a transcendental state that one needs to experience to fully understand. It is a spiritually uplifting ritual which can surpass any normal level of comprehension and it can

reduce wrinkles.

Drastic temperature changes and shivering skin actually exercise shallow sub-cutaneous muscles that firm the skin. If you become a regular dipper, you become part of history rooted in the European tradition of saunas and cold-water swimming.

Besides all that, jumping in near-freezing water wearing little more than a pair of shorts takes a brave soul.

Participants say it builds a sense of camaraderie and valued friendships that can last a lifetime and it helps mentally by shortening the winter season and lifts bouts of depression.

It may be safer than walking on hot coals, but many may opt for the less adventerous route and just donate to a worthy cause.

The penny drops, and who can really be sorry Serious consideration is being given to eliminating the Canadian penny. In the early reaction to a Senate committee’s recommendation to this effect, the usual alarm has been expressed but most people seem relieved not to have to deal with the worthless little things any more.

That’s a realistic way of looking at it. The year 2011 might be the first one without a pennies and what does it matter? We have long since passed the day when nostalgia about the penny was in any way justified. Sure, your parents or grandparents might be able to tell you about actually purchasing something with a penny —usually one solitary piece of a type of candy found in a barrel — but you stopped paying attention long ago.

Maybe when you weren’t paying attention to your father’s penny story, you were thinking about telling your own children about the days when you could buy something with a nickel.

Or a dime.

When were those days, anyway?

What would we be losing if the penny disappears? A little brown coin that doesn’t buy anything. It has a picture of the Queen on one side and a picture of a maple leaf on the other side. Nice, and

In the old days, kids could gamble with pennies, tossing them to see who could land one closest to the wall. That was fun, and we could do that again, except what would we win? Right: more pennies.

Until a few years ago, we could save up those pennies and put them into children’s UNICEF boxes on Halloween night, but that laudable practice was eliminated, apparently for administrative reasons. Even UNICEF found the pennies more trouble than they were worth.

Face it: these days, the penny is something that gathers dust on your dresser while you try to remember to roll it up and take it to the bank or throw it into one of those supermarket machines in

order to trade it in for real money.

Leaving us with the penny, an annoyance for consumers, an inconvenience for merchants, an idea whose time has come and went.

Of course, when change is coming vigilance is called for, especially when it’s the change that is changing.

So there will no shortage of watchdogs on the alert for stores and manufacturers rounding up instead of down, when they can no longer charge $2.98 and must choose between $2.95 and $3.00.

Most of us will take it in stride, especially men, whose stride will improve with fewer coins in their pockets. For a better stride, an extra two cents now and then seems a small price to pay.

Mind you, some of the strategic challenges of shopping will disappear. Not mentioning any names, but I know of a guy who always carried three pennies among his coins when he visited the stores, the object being to get rid of those three pennies. If something cost $1.83, he would offer the three pennies.

If it was $1.81, he would offer two. The theory was that in this way, he would gradually eliminate his weighty stash of pennies.

He could have carried four pennies, for

the sake of the $1.84 purchases, but that seemed too easy, less sporting. Carrying only three pennies added a thrilling element of uncertainty to the outing.

It was a brilliant strategy, and not even remotely successful.

The pennies continued to pile up on the dresser, even as the guy caused holdup after holdup in supermarket lines trying to locate one, two, or three, but not four when he needed them.

The people in those lineups, not to mention the cashiers, will be delighted to see the penny go.

Meanwhile, the guy is noticing that the nickels and dimes are starting to pile up on the dresser.

To the editor: This past week the Ottawa area was visited by almost 500 Minor Hockey teams from as far away as Korea and China. They came to participate in the world’s premiere Minor Hockey Atom and PeeWee tournament – The Bell Capital Cup. This year marks the first time the Korean Eagles have made the long journey to Ottawa. Kanata’s very own Atom A house team, the Kanata Senators, opened their hearts and their homes to 16 young Korean Hockey players. From the time the boys met on Dec. 28 at the first friendly exhibition game until Jan. 2 at the wrap-up mixed friendly game and pizza party, the two teams became fast friends.

At the friendly game, each team swapped seven players.

The Kanata Senators blue team shared their jerseys with their seven new teammates. Each team swapped an assistant coach as well.

Team Korea/Kanata Whites won the closely contested

game 6-5. Language was not an issue as many of the young boys can speak some English.

It became very obvious that these young boys love hockey just as much as any young Canadian. They were so excited to play hockey in the driveways and at the outdoor rinks that they would have played every waking moment if we allowed them. As the head coach of the Kanata Senators I was thrilled to share my passion and time with these children. The two boys that stayed with my family even joined my team at an early morning practice.

Many Kanata teams hosted billeting teams from other countries, and I am sure they would all agree that this was an incredible opportunity to show the world that Canadians are a very warm and caring country. The entire Kanata Senator team and especially the billet families were rewarded with many new lifelong memories and hockey friends. Many of us found it very difficult to say goodbye.

Our two young billets, Jung Won, 11 and Jae Won, 10, along with our son Christopher, 9, played mini-sticks or played hockey in our driveway whenever they had a spare moment. When they found out that I was responsible for

maintaining the Pumphouse Park outdoor rink along with the Scouts (who I might add have had the rink open as early as December 16) they begged me to take them. It was the beginning of the mild temperatures, so we waited until early evening and we took a group of them to Pumphouse park outdoor rink where the boys got to meet some local kids on the ice. There were no language barriers when we dropped the puck.

Starting in the new year, the mixed martial arts community in Ottawa will finally have a fighting chance to show what they can do.

The provincial government will begin accepting applications on Jan. 1 from MMA groups hoping to host professional fights in the province, and Ottawa’s Wreck MMA is looking forward to crossing the Quebec border to prove to Ottawa they are a positive force in the community.

“We’re Ottawa-based, so we’ve been helping local causes in Ottawa ever since we started, but we have to keep going over to Gatineau to fight,” said Nick Castiglia, president of Wreck MMA, explaining that virtually every show they host involves some sort of charitable cause.

For example, their most recent Gatineau fight collected more than a tonne of non-perishable food for the Ottawa Food Bank, and over Thanksgiving they hosted a completely volunteer-run show for troops in Afghanistan.

The organization has also raised $17,000 for terminally ill Ottawa police officer Brian Dick.

“I just ask that the people in the community give the sport a chance. We have this sport played by true gentlemen, who hug after each fight, who are professional athletes. Wreck MMA tries to have the best athletes we can have in the community.”

The move to allow professional MMA events in Ontario has been fairly controversial, with concerns over the violent nature of the sport popularized through the Ultimate Fighting Championship events, which frequently appear on sports-bar television screens across the city.

But Castiglia said the change of heart will be a huge benefit for fans who want to attend an MMA event in the region.

“Some people are just turned off having to go to Gatineau,” he said, adding that the vast majority of their fans and fighters come from the Ontario side. “Most people in Ottawa live their lives in Ottawa, and they don’t want to go over to Gatineau and Aylmer, because it’s not as convenient for them.

fessional MMA event, likely in May, Castiglia said, who will be kicking off the new year with applications to the Ministry of Consumer Services, which will control the MMA applications through the provincial athletics

commissioner.

“Come Jan. 1, I’m putting in my application first thing. I’ve got to get my next martial arts promoter license, and then we’ll put in the event application,” he said.

Although he doesn’t know exactly where the event will be held in Ottawa – “I don’t want to put the cart before the horse” – he said the event will cater to between 1,000 and 4,000 spectators, and ideally would be set in a stadium or bowl-shaped venue, for maximum viewer satisfaction.

The fight would likely involve some of the area’s higher profile fighters, including W1 champion Craig “Farmer” Brown who runs the FIT MMA gym at Scott Street and Parkdale Avenue in Hintonburg.

Applications for such events must be submitted at least 30 days before the proposed date, according to ministry spokesman Stephen Puddister.

Applications require the suggested venue to be safe enough to host the event, and fighters on the application must submit to several medical and drug tests in order to be licensed to fight professionally, Puddister said.

Some fighters, including Brown, have voiced concern the MMA allowance in Ontario will create an influx of ill-prepared fighters in the system and increase the chances of injuries.

“The problem is everybody and his dog is going to try to open up an MMA gym,” Brown said. “People are going to open gyms, and they’ll have guys fighting who aren’t ready, and people will get hurt. The lack of education and people looking to make a quick buck, that’s my biggest worry.”

But Brown’s colleague Castiglia took a slightly different perspective on it.

“When professional MMA got acknowledged and accepted, so did amateur MMA,” he said.

“So we’re not only creating the avenue for professional MMA fighters to be practicing, but we’re also creating a stepping stone for the community’s aspiring athletes to build themselves properly at the amateur level, so they’re properly prepared for the professional level.”

Indeed, Puddister noted that the athletics commissioner will be taking a fighter’s history and skill levels into account when deciding whether or not to approve a match.

“Competitors with significantly different skills and experience would not likely be permitted to fight each other,” he said.

Castiglia said he just hopes the community will give the sport a chance and welcome it into Ottawa.

“It’s not just amount the money. We’re about working with the local athletes, working with local causes, and with local business,” he said.

An environmental lobby group is appealing a court decision allowing the extension of Terry Fox Drive through environmentally-sensitive land in the South March Highlands.

“The question is: are the mitigation measures sufficient,” said Renaud, adding that the public has not been given an opportunity to comment on them.

“There is compelling scientific evidence that the mitigation measures currently in place that will not work and in our opinion (the Terry Fox extension) appears to be an unmitigated environmental disaster that severs eco-connectivity in the South March Highlands until it is fixed.

It could take two months for the court to decide whether to hear the appeal, said Renaud.

If an appeal hearing is granted, the process could take a year to complete.

“There are two subdivisions, one is clear cutting and one is about to,” said Renaud. “The city should suspend those until this situation is resolved.”

The city has already started work on the Terry Fox extension, but the environmental lobby group said it isn’t calling for the road to be “ripped up.”

The group is calling for a new environmental assessment and time for public comment.

Earlier this year an Ontario divisional court dismissed an application from the South March Highlands-Carp River Conservation Inc. for a judicial review of the $47.7-million project.

But the judges misinterpreted the law, asserts the group.

“It’s not too late to do the right thing,” said Renaud in a press release. “This is a nationally important case because it defines whether the public will have an opportunity to comment on mitigation measures which were changed after an EA addendum was last submitted for public review in 2005.”

The lobby group is also looking for more extensive mitigation measures in a new environmental assessment to protect endangered species such as the Blanding’s Turtles.

The city’s green bin program hit its expected target of diverting 53,000 tonnes of organic waste from landfills in its first year.

The program began in January, and the city had hoped to divert between 47,000 and 55,000 tonnes of organic waste from landfills, McRae said.

But it still leaves taxpayers on the hook for around $2.5 million.

That’s the amount of money the city paid for organics collection it didn’t use in 2010. Under the city’s contract with Orgaworld, Ottawa pays the company $93.40 per tonne to collect 80,000 tonnes of organic waste each year of its 20-year contract.

As for when the city could actually use its full 80,000-tonne collection amount, McRae said, “We can’t predict the year if we don’t change some of our behaviour.

“We’ve been very successful so far to get residents participating in the program, but if we want to boost our overall diversion, we have to take it to the next level,” she said.

to continue discussions with residents to find ways to encourage greater use of the green bins.

“Last term’s council I don’t think went far enough in having the debate,” McRae said.

The green bin program helped boost the city’s diversion rate from 32 to 41 per cent this year, which puts Ottawa on par with large cities such as Toronto (which had a 44 per cent diversion rate in 2009).

The province’s goal, which the city also adopted, is a 60 per cent diversion rate. Since Ottawa collects an average of 280,000 tonnes of residential waste annually, it would have needed to divert 170,000 tonnes of organics and recyclables from landfills to hit that target.

Newly minted transportation committee chair Marianne Wilkinson, councillor of Kanata North, is already thinking down the line to Kanata’s commuter woes in the future.

She is asking city staff to look at extending the surface light-rail line from Lincoln Fields to Bayshore as part of the next phase of the city’s rapid-transit plan.

The first phase will involve constructing a rail line from Tunney’s Pasture in the west to Blair station in the east, including a tunnel through the downtown.

The transit plan will create a hub and transfer point at Lincoln Fields, and Wilkinson said she is worried that commuters travelling downtown from Kanata will be faced with already-packed trains coming from Baseline when they transfer at Lincoln Fields.

She envisions the possibility of creating a rail “spur” heading west to Bayshore, similar to the one that is planned to extend rail towards Barrhaven, between Lincoln Fields and Baseline. That would ease the transfer for westend commuters, who are already underserved by the city’s transit

system, Wilkinson said.

“All I was trying to do is get a co-ordination of the planning studies for where the routes are going to go, so that when we do have the funds to go west, we can handle going in both directions, which I think makes sense,” Wilkinson said.

The city currently has two studies underway, and Wilkinson wants to see them linked. The first study is looking at a section of the Transitway from Tunney’s Pasture to Pinecrest, which will connect bus rapid transit from the city’s west end to the future light-rail line.

The second study is determining the route for that light-rail line, which will run surface rail from Bayview (linking with the downtown rail tunnel) to Baseline station.

“I really just want to take those two existing environmental assessments and tie them together so we have the information going in both directions before we have to make a decision, which is probably many years away,” Wilkinson said.

It’s just an idea at this stage, and even if Wilksinson gets her way, it would only mean her idea is included as an option in the report.

If it would be too expensive to

fit a Bayshore extension into the city’s $2.1-billion light-rail transit (LRT) plan, it likely wouldn’t become a reality. And that’s still several years down the line – the study for the western LRT link to Baseline won’t be completed until 2012, and construction would happen after that.

“We don’t even have a Transitway link all the way to Kanata.

You do have one for Orleans, you do have one for Barrhaven and South Keys. It seemed kind of crazy not to have it finished at least to the greenbelt,” Wilkinson said.

An extension to Bayshore in the earlier phase might save costs down the line because light rail will eventually be extended to Kanata in the long-term future, Wilkinson said.

“It would make more sense … to wait until the rail is coming and just build the rail, and not build the bus lane and then convert it, because when they do that there is a lot of extra cost,” she said.

City staff are “already moving in that direction” of co-ordinating the two studies, Wilkinson said. She will discuss the idea with staff and, if required, seek approval through the transportation committee, which she leads.

Thief leads police on drunken chase KOURIER-STANDARD STAFF A 23-year-old Ottawa man has been charged with theft and several weaponsrelated offences after leading police on a drunken chase in an all terrain vehicle in Glen Cairn on Dec. 31.

Ottawa police were called into the Hazeldean and Abbeyhill roads area early Friday morning at around 2 a.m. after a witness saw a masked man in a backyard.

Recent scrutiny on the Ottawa Police Service will not spare it from city council’s tax-increase limit.

As members of the Ottawa Police Services Board heard about measures being undertaken to address allegations of prisoner abuse, the service was also grappling with council’s direction that will force the police budget to trim $6 million.

City council adopted Mayor Jim Watson’s election promise of a 2.5 per cent tax increase limit for the 2011 budgets, as well as all departments – including the police.

After the police services board meeting on Dec. 20, acting police chief Gilles Larochelle said hitting that target will be a challenge for the service.

“It’s going to have an impact to our organization and ultimately to the community,” he said. “So we’re trying to see what we can do to work with the city and the direction of the board to meet that goal.”

Larochelle was filling in for Chief Vern White, who was out of the country for his wedding and honeymoon.

Next year’s draft police budget called for a 5.6 per cent increase, which will have to be trimmed to 2.5 per cent.

Watson, who now sits on the police services board, offered the additional help of the city’s treasurer to help find savings.

Watson said the police service isn’t unique, and all city departments have been instructed to tighten their budgets.

“The police budget will increase by several million dollars. It won’t increase as much, because we’re all living in a postrecession world and we have to show a degree of restraint,” he said.

“There is no question it’s going to be difficult for every group to come in at that level.

We have some belt tightening to do,” he said, adding that there is no public appetite for growing tax increases.

“It’s not going to be easy, we never said it was,” he said, adding that the 2.5 figure matches recent inflation rates.

Following the cellblock audits, the police force will also receive recommendations on how to train officers who work in cellblocks, as well as an audit of use of force complaints.

on behalf of Stacy Bonds filed a lawsuit against the police services board with regards to her arrest and treatment in a cellblock, as shown in a video.

Watson said he couldn’t comment on a case before the courts, but said, “Obviously, the police services board will file a defense within the due time.”

no teeth.” Community groups in Westboro just launched an OMB appeal on this very issue, and even city planning staff are planning to go to bat on this issue – they will instigate a series of public consultations on how to align design guidelines with the city’s zoning bylaws.

Watson said Alta Vista Coun. Peter Hume will be dealing with planning issues as the head of the city’s planning committee.

“These contentious planning issues are very divisive for the community,” Watson said.

Planning and design guidelines must be written in a way that makes them less open to interpretation than they have been in the past couple of years, Watson said.

At the same time, the city needs to take a look at how it approves development projects to reduce the red tape involved, Watson said.

He said he will bring forward a series of motions aimed at simplifying the process, with a view to reducing the number of projects that end up at the OMB. He also wants to see incentives for developers to move construction forward.

Where does the boundary lie? That will be a question for the Ontario Municipal Board in 2011 as developers go to bat to get the city to expand its urban boundary.

That’s the area that defines where new construction can occur, and the developers want it widened – an idea that was popular with former mayor Larry O’Brien. Last year, city council debated expanding the urban area by 840 hectares – much of it in the city’s west end.

Instead, city council chose to promote intensified development and only expand the boundary by 220 hectares – a decision that didn’t sit will with developers, who will take their cases to the OMB this spring. The result? If the boundary is expanded, it would likely put development pressures on the suburbs and rural areas.

But whether or not the city expands its boundaries, intensification and infill development will remain a hot topic.

A number of people are looking at the city’s design guidelines, community design plans and secondary plans and getting fed up with how these plans “have

But before anything else gets underway at city hall in 2011, council will need to take care of the budget.

That’s Mayor Jim Watson’s No.1 priority for the first year of his term at the helm of city council.

“It will set the stage for everything we’re going to do in the year,” he said.

It won’t be easy – Watson was already successful in getting council to put a 2.5-per cent cap on budget increases for all departments, and the entire budget process must be wrapped up by March.

We’ve already seen one department begin to grapple with those limits – the Ottawa Police Service will have to trim more than $6 million in budget increases it had anticipated in 2011.

Watson says that is the new fiscal reality at city hall.

“It’s how you look at it,” he said. “All departments will get more money to operate, they just won’t be getting as much as they asked for. Every department is going to have to live within that.”

The new integrity measures Watson promised during the election, such as online posting of city councillors’ expenses and the appointment of an integrity commissioner – have been given the thumbs-up by council and will be implemented in the first half of the new year, Watson said.

Council and city staff will also be working to set up a reserve fund dedicated to purchasing environmentally sensitive land – something council approved just before the holidays. Watson said he wanted to see that fund created because of the furor over building on land surrounding the Beaver Pond in Kanata. The

While Watson wants to move a number of positive initiatives forward, he will also have to deal with a number of hefty challenges facing the city this year.

All eyes will be on OC Transpo, as contract negotiations with the Amalgamated Transit Union will begin. Looking to diffuse a tense relationship with the transit union and prevent a repeat of the 2008 transit strike, Watson has already reported positive initial meetings with the interim union head, Mike Aldrich.

The Lansdowne Park redevelopment will continue to face obstacles as the courts deal with a legal challenge from the Friends of Lansdowne in April, but Watson said if the court decides in the city’s favour, we could see shovels in the ground before the end of 2011.

Trying times will likely continue for the Ottawa Police Service and the city’s police service board as they grapple with allegations of cellblock misconduct and a resulting lawsuit from Stacy Bonds, a young Ottawa woman whose treatment on a cellblock security video stirred national uproar.

Across the city, people will be watching to see how the Ottawa River Action Plan – a series of 17 projects aimed at reducing combined sewer overflows and improve stormwater management practices in the City of Ottawa – is implemented. City council approved the $251.6-million plan in February of 2010, and there is still about $173-million worth of work left to be done between 2011 and ’13.

The Carp Road landfill issue is really in the hands of the province at this point, but we’ll see what happens with a $75,000 fund the city has approved to allow the community to hire experts to make their case against expanding the dump.

Ottawa residents can also look forward to a seniors’ summit in 2011, which Watson promised during his campaign. The event will bring together experts to discuss how the city can be better prepared to cope with its aging population from a variety of perspectives.

The OPP are investigating two complaints of abuse in cellblocks, and the police services board will need to act on recommendations it will receive from an audit of how police treat prisoners in cellblocks and how officers are trained.

The city’s light-rail plan will need to stay on track if it wants to hit its targets. “The public wants us to proceed on that file,� Watson said, reiterating that keeping costs in check will be high on his radar.

Council will be dealing with these issues with 10 new faces around the table, but Watson said council has the mix of experience and fresh ideas needed to tackle these issues. “We were elected to work in the spirit of co-operation,� Watson said. “We’ve got a lot on our plate,� he said. “But there is a willingness to move things forward in a thoughtful and financially prudent way.�

Making people laugh is what Ottawa Sketch Comedy is all about.

The newest comedy troupe to hit the capital city, Ottawa Sketch is hoping to reach a wide audience through their use of a web series and live performances.

“If it’s something that makes you laugh, we’re hoping it’ll translate to the audience,” said Rachelle Casseus, a Barrhaven resident and member of the troupe. “We want to laugh and make people laugh.”

One of the main focuses for the web series is a segment called Locker Lives, which is loosely based on the ’90s hit show Saved by the Bell, said Casseus.

“Basically it’s about a bunch of washed up actors in their 30s and 40s still playing teenagers in this show,” she said. “We were just trying to think of shows we watched as kids. We wondered what they’re doing now.”

Locker Lives will take a look at what goes on behind the scenes of the show and allow viewers to see what the actors’ real attitudes are.

“It’s another character-based show where we see these washed up actors, their idiosyncrasies and shenanigans that go on off-set,” said Casseus.

Another show Ottawa Sketch will be producing is something called the Chuck Chandler Show.

“It’s a take on a talk show but the host is kind of a character, kind of kooky,” said Casseus. “We’re going to bring on celebrity guests.”

OTTAWA SKETCH, from 20 Sarah Argue, one of the founders of Ottawa Sketch and a member of Rock the Arts, a puppet group based in Kanata, will be on hand for a puppet-filled segment based on the TV show Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader, as well as a take-off on The Young and the Restless with the puppets, said Casseus.

Ottawa Sketch will be launching the troupe through a two-day live show presentation in January.

It will be an hour and a half show filled with standup comedy as well as bits and pieces from the web series segments.

Audience participation is highly en-

couraged, said Casseus.

“Our goal is not to become big and famous. I mean it would be nice if we could make money off of it but our goal is to work and have fun.”

OTTAWA-BASED The members of Ottawa Sketch decided the capital city was a perfect homebase for their idea because there is nothing to compete against, said Casseus.

“We’re all from Ottawa and here we are kind of big fish in a small pond,” she said. “If we were to go to Toronto or Vancouver, there are more actors, more groups like us. Here there’s no group like that; there’s no sketch comedy

group that combines a web series with live comedy.

“So we thought what a great opportunity to start it in our city. We figured if we can stay home and do it, why not?”

No one is assigned any one position within the troupe. Each member can write, direct and act.

“We all bring ideas to the tables,” said Casseus. “There’s no sort of specific leader. We take the lead where necessary and follow where necessary – it works very well that way.”

A web series is a good way to determine whether there is a following or not, she explained.

“It’s a good way to see the popularity of a show. If you get people interested

then you might get TV companies interested in you.”

She said a television show isn’t the main objective of Ottawa Sketch.

“I think the end goal is just the goal we all have in common; we just want to work, we want to have fun and act.

“I think there’s not enough that sparks peoples’ interests. I think if we have the right shows and the right comedy, they’ll bite.”

Ottawa Sketch Comedy will premiere its live show on Jan. 12 and 13 at the Elmdale House Tavern, 1084 Wellington St. West.

The Stallions and the league are looking to Tony House, who has managed the last two AAA hockey provincial championships and most recently the 2010 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships last May in Ottawa, to organize the event.

“It’s good we’re starting now on this – it’s the first time the Fred Page Cup will be in Ottawa. Our number one goal will be to pack the KRC everyday and make this the most memorable Fred Page Cup yet,” he said.

Kevin Abrams, league president, has noticed a vast improvement in attendance at games this year in Ottawa.

“Our league is garnering a lot of attention, having one of our five ‘city’ teams host the Fred Page will be very good for us,” he said.

“I’m confident that we can build on the momentum of this year’s 50th season and host a fantastic championship.”

The Bell Sensplex will play host to the Central Tier 1 Junior A Hockey League All-Star Classic this January.

This most highly-anticipated hockey event features the league’s best players from all 12 teams with the Yzerman Division going head to head against the Robinson Division as they battle for on-ice supremacy.

The All-Star Classic has always been an entertaining evening of hockey; with 50 years of history and tradition, the central league has always showcased some of the best junior hockey players in the country.

President Kevin Abrams said he is very excited about what the game will bring.

“The league has become a real hot-bed for hockey,” he said.

“This game especially brings the very best together – many of them will go on and star at the next level, whether it’s NCAA, CIS and even the NHL.” The central league has been a stepping stone for a number of current NHL stars, with the likes of Claude Giroux, Patrick Sharpe, Wayne Sim-

monds, Ben Eager, Jimmy Howard and Dan Boyle all pointing to this very league for helping them in their overall development.

Both teams will ice solid rosters, the Yzerman and Robinson divisions will be coached by leagueleading Sheldon Keefe, from the Pembroke Lumber Kings, and Ian MacInnis of the Cornwall Colts. Both coaches are looking forward to an entertaining night.

“It’s always a coach’s dream to sit behind the bench in a game like this, the skill level is incredible and sometimes I just get caught up watching it myself,” said Keefe.

“Hockey fans will definitely get treated to a fantastic evening of hockey,” MacInnis added.

The 2011 Central Tier 1 Junior A Hockey League All-Star Classic will take place Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bell Sensplex (Mattamy rink).

Opening Ceremonies are scheduled to celebrate the 50th season with all past league presidents being honored, as well as the silver medalist members of the 2010 Canada East team, which participated in the World Junior A Challenge this past November in Penticton, B.C.

Left winger Spenser Cobbold and defenceman Ryan Duhaime were selected to the Yzerman Division team for the Jan. 15 game.

Cobbold has recorded 10 goals

and 10 assists in 37 games, while Duhaime has nine assists in 30 contests this season. Both players are 16 years old.

The Prospects Game will be played the Robert Hartley Arena in Hawkesbury at 3 p.m.

The game is restricted to first- and second-year players – born in 1993 and 1994 – and is partnered with the main AllStar Classic. The Classic will be played at the Bell Sensplex on Jan. 12.

The Kanata Lakes Community Association is promising to take an active role in vetting all future development.

The association (KLCA) heads into 2011 with a politically-active agenda and an executive that boasts some of the leaders of the Coalition to Preserve the South March Highlands.

Steve Hulaj, a leader of the coalition, was elected KLCA president during the association’s annual general meeting in mid-October, replacing Jim Malone, who

“It just needs to be better organized so we can disseminate information to the community.”

The KLCA also plans to make changes to the community association’s executive to allow members to vote by proxy.

It hopes to encourage an active membership by planning a number of events including: • Participation in the Kanata Chamber of Commerce’s winter festival on Feb. 4 and 5. The association plans to turn the Beaver Pond into a skating rink during the festival and is looking for volunteers to organize the event and help clear the ice.

• Kids Day in the Park at Whalen Park in June.

The community association will also be working with the community steering committee for the Kanata north recreation centre (Hulaj is chair of the board of the committee) to include special activities and programs such as snow shoeing, cross country skiing, and outdoor orienteering.

The KLCA is looking to raise money to buy a staging hut for cross country skiing near the yet-to-be-built recreation centre.

The association meets at SS#1, a schoolhouse located on 400 Goldridge Dr., seven times a year on dates to be determined at its next meeting on, Jan. 21, 7:30 p.m.

Hulaj, who was elected in a 16-12 vote, replaced Jim Malone, who served as KLCA president for 12 years.

Malone said his administration worked many years to preserve as much of the land slated for development as possible.

“We had felt there were other ways – there was a more diplomatic (way) to get some land.”

Malone said he held meetings with the city planners and the developer, KNL, and lobbied the National Capital Commission to look for ways to acquire some of the Beaver Pond land.

“You have to work in conjunction with the developer and the city,” Malone said.

KNL will start work cutting down trees on 29 hectares of land north of the Beaver Pond early this month, preparing the way for a housing development.

The KLCA will keep a close eye on development near All Saints Catholic High School and potential traffic problems on Kanata Avenue and Goulbourn Forced Road, said Hulaj.

But first on the agenda is improving communication between the association and its members, he said.

The KLCA executive is planning to revamp the association’s website and has introduced social media programs like Twitter and a Facebook page to inform

Developers are taking sets of digital information about the city and spinning them into handy tools for people to use on their cell phone and computers.

From finding fun Saturday-morning activities for children, to locating the best dog parks in the city, the applications that will be developed during the event will bolster residents’ ability to use the city’s new “open data” policy.

While creating these intricate techie tools only appeals to a small group of people, the apps can be used by anyone and everyone who has access to a smartphone or computer – and the city is hoping that gets residents interested in the initiative.

The contest closed on Jan. 3, so now it’s up to the public to weigh in on what they think are the best apps. Voting will take place online at www.apps4ottawa.com until Jan. 28 to choose the peoples’ choice award. There is also a panel of judges – including developers, researchers and librarians – who will dole out the rest of the cash prizes: $50,000 in total.

Last spring, the City of Ottawa began a process of making its information available to the public as “open data” – a philosophy that certain government data be openly available in a

digital format.

The move is meant to increase transparency at city hall and remove barriers to information to allow people to find innovative uses for it, and perhaps spur on community involvement and economic development.

The app contest isn’t just a way to get developers and residents interested in how open data can help them – it’s also a way to show city employees how useful it is and convince any remaining skeptics that it is worth their time to convert data into an “open format.”

It takes a bit of work, but the city’s information technology staffers have yet to come across a city department that has said “no,” said Robert Giggey, one of the IT staff members who is working on the project.

“Our hope is that the contest will also do that – help drive home that message,” said Giggey. “Showing them the apps may spark that interest.”

The popularity of open data in Ottawa wouldn’t be nearly as high without the involvement of advocates like Tracy Lauriault and Edward OcampoGooding, Giggey said.

“This group has been very active,” Giggey said. “They are like-minded individuals who have helped out since the beginning.”

an open data advocate and developer, have worked with the city’s information technology subcommittee and IT staff to bolster the initiative.

Ocampo-Gooding was one of the organizers of two “hackathons” held at city hall in 2010, the most recent of which was on Dec. 4. The events bring together members of the public, researchers, designers and developers to create useful apps and encourage the city to create data sets to make the apps work.

On Dec. 4, hackathon participants put their ideas for data sets and apps down on paper, and now that brainstorm is something city staff and the information technology subcommittee can use to fuel the initiative.

Things like the hackathon are helping guide city staff as they navigate which sets of data are in the highest demand and which will be most useful to residents, Giggey said.

A couple of the ideas that came out of the hackathon were an OC Transpo bus locater powered by GPS info found on 90 per cent of buses, a community equipment lock locator and an idea to pool resources and share things like snowplows within a neighbourhood.
