Tree cutting started in the Beaver Pond Forest this week, marking the end of months of protest and debate over the controversial housing development. KNL brought in a construction crew to start work clearing 26 hectares of land on the western border of the property. Security guards blocked the entrances to the Beaver Pond trails and police briefly closed down Goulbourn Forced Road to allow workers to bring in heavy treecutting machinery to the western border of the property on Monday, Jan. 31. A handful of protesters picketed on Goulbourn Forced Road and watched a feller buncher and a grapple skidder tear down a swath of trees on Monday afternoon. “I know you don’t care but you’re breaking my heart,” said one protester as a truck carrying a grapple skidder, a heavy tractor used to clear trees, wheeled past her. The protesters, members of the Coalition to Protect the South March Highlands, had planned to picket Urbandale – KNL is a partnership of Urbandale and Richcraft – offices throughout Ottawa as well as city hall on Monday afternoon. The coalition sent an emergency email to its 14,000 members at around noon, asking them to gather at the Beaver Pond to picket the tree clearing on Goulbourn Forced Road. Kurtis Benedetti, a member of the Coalition to Protect the South March Highlands, was one of the first people to arrive at the protest. “It’s happening fast,” said Benedetti.

A protest at the Beaver Pond ended peacefully on the morning of Feb. 1 after two Algonquin First Nations men were told they’d be charged with trespassing by police. Daniel Bernard “Amickwabe” and Robert Lovelace had chained themselves to trees in the area where KNL Developments Inc. had started cutting on Monday, Jan. 31. “We managed to stop the cutting for a few hours,” said Lovelace after the two were escorted down by police to a round of applause from supporters around 11:30 a.m. Bernard and Lovelace began their protest around 7 a.m., Tuesday in the hopes of preventing further destruction. “You don’t have to be an Aboriginal to have common sense. So what’s happening behind us, that’s not common sense,” said Bernard. “That’s full out destruction and a full out slap in the face of the Algonquin community.” Scarborough resident Bernard, who set up the sacred fire at the Beaver Pond in January, said he was compelled to come back. “We’re not going to give up. This is an Algonquin First Nations place,” he said. “We feel compelled to protect the animals, to protect the trees. Where we were tied up there, Bob and I were looking, there are butternut trees and those are an endangered species and they’re going to destroy this,” he said. This needs to stop and should be stopped immediately.”

After the group reviewed the documents, Urbandale and Richcraft, began clearcutting the 26 hectares of land north of it said there was a high potential for findthe Beaver Pond on Monday to make way ing Aboriginal artifacts in the area. for a new housing development. ALGONQUINS, see 4 The company had agreed to delay cutting in the area until Jan. 31 to give the Algonquins of Ontario (AOO) time to evaluate the existing archaeological assessment.

Coalition demands new archaeology study of Beaver Pond Algonquins protest tree cutting “We’re picketing all Urbandale locations starting at 12 and we’re going to 2 – it seems like we have a lot of people willing to drop what they’re doing and help out.” Mary and Solomon Shleifman of Morgan’s Grant said they learned about the tree-cutting when they were driving along Goulbourn Forced Road. “I’ve been living in Morgan’s Grant for 30 years. This is the forest where we bike and we ski in the winter and walk in the sum-

mer.” said Mary. “My kids grew up here and it’s a beautiful place and there’s a lot of animals.” Solomon said it was sad seeing the trees come down. “This is a disaster,” he said. “Look at this.” Steve Hulaj, a leader of the Coalition to Protect the South March Highlands, said he was nearly arrested when he attempted to walk on a path in the Beaver Pond forest earlier that day. mer, said there’s very few places left in Ottawa for people to come out and connect with Mother Nature. “This is one of those places,” he said. “We need more spaces like this, and I don’t see any point in cutting this one down just to make room for another 3,500 ticky-tack houses.” Last weekend, the coalition met at the Beaver Pond Park lot to join in a day of prayer for the forest’s survival. In December, city council abandoned a proposal to spend millions to buy the Beaver Pond land, voting instead for a land swap that will create a two and a half hectare corridor connecting the forest to the Trillium Woods on land surrounding the proposed development. NEW STUDY REQUESTED Earlier this month, KNL had agreed to delay tree cutting a the request of the Algonquins of Ontario to give the group time to investigate reports of sites of possible archaeological significance in the Beaver Pond Forest. Ron Bigbear Goddard, an Ottawa Algonquin First Nations medicine man, said a circle of

stones discovered in the forest last year might be a medicine wheel once used by natives as an astrological, healing and teaching tool. An archaeological review of the site recently completed by the Groupe de Recherché Archaeologique de L’Outaouais concluded the Beaver Pond land has “high potential” for significant aboriginal artifacts within the KNL lands. The Algonquins of Ontario have appealed to the city and KNL to delay tree cutting until another archaeological study of the area is completed. KNL has yet to respond to the request, said Paul Renaud, a leader of the Coalition to Protect the South March Highlands. “We now have two scientific opinions that say that a new study is required,” said Renaud. “The Ontario Heritage Act has been broken in our view.” The coalition has sent a letter to the Ontario Ministry of Culture and Tourism requesting an emergency order to stop construction and protect cultural resources in the area. “This is a travesty – it’s an offense against the Algonquin people,” said Renaud. “This is a travesty of Ontario law.”

ALGONQUINS, from 3 The development has faced criticism from Algonquin groups, residents and environmentalists who all have said the land could have archeological significance. In a memo to council, John Moser, general manager of planning and growth management said he urged KNL to consider another pause in construction. “I have written to KNL with regard to the AOO request that a further pause be provided. In that letter, I have encouraged KNL to give full and fair consideration to this request and keep the city informed of progress. “I also confirmed to KNL that the conditions of draft approval require the preservation or removal and documentation of archaeological resources. Thus, in the event that such resources are found on the site, KNL has been reminded of its obligation to ensure that these resources are properly documented and preserved.” However, KNL was given the green light by the city to begin cutting in mid-January. The city sent the developer a letter saying it had met all necessary preconditions for tree removal for Phase 9 of the development. Bernard said he was disappointed with the government’s inaction. “The government is allowing total violence against Algonquin First Nations. It’s the United Nation’s Year of the Forest and here in the capital city of Canada they’re destroying a jewel.” Police and Urbandale security officers are on-site, directing traffic and keeping people from stopping along Goulbourn Forced Road. “They are concerned about safety,” said Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson. “Goulbourn Forced Road is very narrow and they said if necessary, they said they’d close it.” She added that the pathway along the Beaver Pond itself it open to the public. “They tried to stop them yesterday (from using it) and I clarified it with KNL,” she said. “It’s a public path on public land; it’s not part of their land.”

Ottawa police have realigned responsibilities for community policing in the Bridlewood area. The Kanata South ward will now see the core crime prevention programs on: child print, home security inspections, neighbourhood watch, business crime and combat auto theft, managed through the community police centre located at 211 Huntmar Dr. This realignment does not affect patrol operations or allocation of other police resources. Const. Ryan Strotmann, the community police officer for Kanata, welcomed the opportunity to serve the community of Bridlewood, and said this integration creates a single communication contact for the Kanata and Stittsville communities.

OPINION

End in sight for Beaver Pond A long chapter came to a likley close on Jan. 31 as tree clearing started on the Beaver Pond Forest land. On Monday protesters watched a feller buncher and a heavy tractor clear dozens of trees away on the western portion of a 26-hectare tract of land owned by KNL, a partnership of Urbandale and Richcraft Homes. The Coalition to Protect the South March Highlands still holds out hope that something can be done to stop the housing project. They argue the land is a valuable environmental area and the location of several valuable Aboriginal archaeological sites. Two Algonquin men felt so strongly opposed to the development that they chained themselves to trees on Tuesday, Feb. 1, leaving peaceably after police threatened to charge them with trespassing. Meanwhile, the Coalition is desperately pressing the city to take a hand and order a stop to development. The same day the pair of Algonquin men chained themselves to trees, a group of activists staged a sit-in in front of the mayor’s office at Ot-

tawa City Hall, demanding he take action. But the mayor’s deafening silence on the issue only accentuates a message coming from most muncipal politicians: the city has no intention of fighting this battle. The fight over the Beaver Pond was lost in 2004, when city council gave the thumbs up for a 200-hectare development in the South March Highlands. More accurately, it was lost decades ago, when the land was zoned for development. Possession is nine-tenths of the law — and we can’t forget that KNL owns the land and has the right to develop it in accordance with zoning rules. Unless the province takes a hand — and they, like their municipal counterparts, have shown no stomach for this fight -— the trees will come down and the Beaver Pond land will be developed. If we can take anything aways from this it’s the lesson of vigilance. If we want to preserve our valuable greenspace we must either buy it or protect it with zoning bylaws or environmental law.

Wayne Gretzky is 50 and how old do you feel? The signposts of ageing are many and they get more comical as you go along. You remember becoming a teenager, bidding farewell to all that childish behaviour, and welcoming new varieties of even more childish behaviour. You remember being old enough to drink legally, old enough to leave home for work or university, an adult. This is perhaps the first feeling of being old. Then your baby sister goes off to university. Then you become one of those older people you used to smirk at as a teenager – a married person, with a mortgage and a job, who stays in on weeknights. Where does the time go, you ask. But the process has barely begun. You have children of your own and that’s around the same time that you notice that the police officers are no longer older than you. The children become teenagers and you begin sounding like your parents. I’m old, you think. And it’s all downhill from there. Soon, you are older than the police officers, older than the minister at the church, older than the dentist. Your children grow up, turn 30. You become a grandparent. You take naps. Surely it can’t get older than this. But it can. Last week you open up the newspaper and it says Wayne Gretzky

CHARLES GORDON Funny Town has turned 50. So there you are. You, as a grown-up, watched Gretzky as a kid. Now Gretzky feels old. How does that make you feel? Perhaps it is not as shocking to you as all that. In this Facebook era, people are reconnecting with old friends, going to high school reunions, where they are surrounded by old people. Somehow they sense that they are not kids anymore. And neither is Wayne Gretzky. He is older than the sportswriters now, older than his dentist. But there is a reassuring point in all this. Wayne Gretzky is 50 but he is not irrelevant. Almost all of the dozens of records he set still stand. Someone broke one the other day but it was an obscure thing – most career overtime goals, or something like that. For the rest of it, he

is still the guy. But so are you, when you think about it. Your old records still stand. Sure, they are different kinds of records. But no one flips pancakes the way you do, or finds a parking space, or empties the dishwasher. You can climb ladders like nobody’s business and you never run out of windshield washer fluid. Just because Gretzky is 50 doesn’t mean he’s finished either. He can look forward to future accomplishments, such as the kind of stuff you’ve been doing. You hold the record for reading the most consecutive Dr. Seuss stories aloud. You could be the best at remembering the names of bit players in western movies. You can identify any car made in the last 50 years. You scored six goals that time, when you were older than Gretzky, at the neighbourhood rink. You saved a cat. No one tells a joke like you do. And you just get better the older you are. You can make a soufflé. You can play Beatles songs on the recorder. You can watch four games on TV simultaneously. You can figure out what’s wrong with the computer. And you know how all those sports columnists have been writing about what a considerate guy Gretzky is?

Well, you’re pretty considerate too. You hold the record, shared with a number of others, for never forgetting an anniversary. You are absolutely terrific at putting things into alphabetical order. The Sudoku is child’s play to you, mostly. You make great things out of leftovers. No one is better than you at finding the bright side of things. No one can find a lost ball the way you can. Maybe when Wayne Gretzky gets to be old he’ll have stuff like this to brag about too.

Fernbank development on hold Developers who own land in Fernbank got news that they will have to wait before they develop their land. Construction in Fernbank should be restricted until the City of Ottawa can provide enough water and sewer capacity, said the city’s planning committee on Jan. 25. The news was met with some frustration by a group that represents developers waiting to put shovels in the ground. The Fernbank Land Owners Group, comprised of 10 companies that own property in the community, sent a letter to the city saying the restrictions are more unnecessary red tape. “It’s an additional administrative obstacle,” said Ursula Melinz, a lawyer who represents the land owners’ group. “There is no justification for having theses lands treated differently,” added John Riddell, an engineering consultant from Novatech who also represents the group. The restrictions aren’t even necessary because the lands aren’t even zoned for development yet, Melinz said, arguing that development applications should be considered on a case-by-case basis. But the restrictions are a condition of the Ministry of Environment’s approval for the project, so the city’s planning committee had no choice in the matter, said planning committee chair Coun. Peter Hume (Alta Vista).

A two-part rollout of more water and sewer capacity will begin in the spring. City staff said the first part of the expansion, which involves adding a sewer pump, will allow flows of 1,400 litres of water per second. That work is expected to be completed before the summer storm season – likely by May, city staff said. Currently, it can pump up to 1,225 litres of water per second. The full capacity should be complete by 2012, said Derrick Moodie, a city planner. According to the Fernbank Land Owners Group, existing flows from the station were 921 litres per second in the summer of 2010. The city began upgrades to the Hazeldean pumping station as a way to address the 2009 floods in Glen Cairn. A city staff report says limiting development until the upgrades are complete will prevent another flood. Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley said the process of tabling a report on the 2002 and 2009 floods has been “frustratingly slow,” but the report is almost ready.

Check your smoke alarm Did you know that working smoke alarms can cut your chances of dying in a fire by 50 per cent? In Ontario, having working smoke alarms is not only a good idea -- it’s the law. Ottawa Fire Services recommends you install a smoke alarm on every level of your home, and outside your sleeping areas. Test your smoke alarms every month and change the batteries twice a year when you change your clocks. A working smoke alarm and a home fire escape plan will significantly increase your chances of surviving a fire.

Head games: multiple concussions nothing to play with Former CFL player brings awareness to injury

‘NEED TO EDUCATE’

Dr. Renata J. Frankovich, director with Physiotherapy and Sports Injury centres throughout Ottawa, said there is a concern with multiple concussions in contact sports like boxing, football and hockey. Jessica Cunha photo

Glenn Kulka, former CFL player, has suffered over 16 concussions. After his last one left him out of commission for five months, he started working as a personal trainer helping young athletes excel in their field. Here he trains Mitchell Henselwood from Stittsville, who plays football with the Bell Warriors. Henselwood said he’s had three concussions in his life. more likely it is that he or she will suffer another. “It can often be less trauma that causes a problem. It’s not the huge hit from behind in hockey into the boards,” said Frankovich, who was the assistant chief medical officer at the Vancouver Olympics. “It’s such little force or impact that causes problems. There’s also concern if you have repeated concussions that the symptoms will be more severe and be longer-lasting.” It’s important for children and young athletes to get checked properly after suffering concussions because they may not be fully aware of their symptoms; a lingering headache could be a sign that the brain hasn’t properly healed and any trauma suffered during that time could potentially do more damage. “We still need to do research in younger children to see what the longer-term effects are but what I advise is that you be extra cautious with children because they may not be fully aware of their bodies and what they’re feeling,” said Frankovich.

WHEN ENOUGH IS ENOUGH Kulka started out his contact sports career playing in the Western Hockey League, where he played for the Medicine Hat Tigers and Spokane Flyers. He played 11 years for the CFL, spent four years as a professional wrestler with the World Wrestling Federation, and fought three MMA fights before retiring. “A metal chair to the head is still a metal chair to the head,” he said about his choreographed WWF fights. Kulka wants to bring awareness to the long-term effects that result from multiple concussions. He wants parents to know it’s not worth it to risk the health of their children if they’ve already suffered concussions in contact sports. “I read a comment from a hockey parent after their kid suffered a concussion and he said ‘what’s he supposed to do, become a swimmer?’ The answer is yes – there’s nothing wrong with being a swimmer.

Or look at track and field; anything that minimizes the chance of another concussion. “That’s the worst you can do is push it. Quit living your life vicariously through your kids at the expense of your kids’ health.” The physical and mental effects of suffering too many concussions just aren’t worth it, he said. Along with the short-term memory loss, Kulka has suffered long-term memory loss, anxiety and depression as a result. “It was the most difficult injury or circumstance I’ve ever had to deal with,” he said. “Some of my life I just don’t remember.” Parents need to know when enough is enough, he said. There needs to be an open dialogue between children and their parents. “Kids will turn around and after 16 years say, ‘You know what? I hate hockey. I only did it because you pushed me,’” said Kulka. “Don’t get me wrong, I really want people to understand contact sports, team sports are phenomenal; but concussions are not.”

City heads off OMB fight for Huntmar laura.mueller@metroland.com

The City of Ottawa wants to restrict development at the southern edge of the environmentally-sensitive South March Highlands. The change would ensure the Ministry of Natural Resources signs off of developments in a 7.1-hectare section along the edge of the South March Highlands on Huntmar Road, west of the Terry Fox Drive extension and north of Richardson Side Road (820, 870, 940 and 1030 Huntmar Dr.). The land is owned by Richcraft Developments and no construction project is proposed, but the situation is reminiscent of how development evolved in another section of the 894-hectare South March Highlands: the KNL development in the Beaver Pond Forest in Kanata. That environmentally-sensitive land was zoned for development decades ago, despite residents’ concerns over the effect construction could have on threatened species and sensitive

Toddler in critical condition KOURIER-STANDARD STAFF A toddler sustained life-threatening head injuries and was airlifted to hospital in critical condition after the car he was riding in collided with a SUV on Sunday, Jan. 30. Paramedics responded to a call of a T-bone collision at the intersection of Carp and Richardson Side roads Sunday night around 8:15 p.m. The two-year-old boy, who was riding in the back of a Chevrolet Malibu in a car seat, was taken by helicopter to the trauma centre at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Three other people were injured in the accident, including the boy’s 26-year-old mother who is eight months pregnant. She sustained minor neck injuries and was taken to the hospital in stable condition along with the boy’s 31-year-old father, who suffered neck, arm and leg injuries. The driver of the black Ford Escape, a 17-year-old male, was treated at the scene for minor injuries and taken to hospital in stable condition. Richardson Side Road was closed in both directions from Cardevco Road to Huntmar Drive, while Carp Road was closed in both directions from Cardevco to Hwy 417. Police are investigating the collision.

habitats. The South March Highlands is a candidate for the province’s areas of natural and scientific interest (ANSI) designation, and city staff said the area has high potential for significant endangered and threatened species. The restrictions would allow the Ministry of Natural Resources to block development if it threatens those species. West Carleton-March Coun. Eli El-Chantiry said the planned development would mainly be residential, with some commercial businesses. In the future, if the ministry says a proposed construction project won’t have a detrimental effect on the environment, certain uses such as forestry, bed and breakfasts, animal breeding and lowdensity homes would be allowed. Subdivisions wouldn’t be allowed. This compromise for Huntmar Road prevented the case from going to the Ontario Municipal Board, which would have handed

all the control over to the OMB, said El-Chantiry. Instead, the city had a chance to negotiate with the developer to come to a solution, he said. “It’s the lesser evil,” he said. “I’m just kind of happy we have the opportunity to put this back to the provincial level, where it probably belongs,” said Lynne McCormick of the city’s environmental advisory committee, who is in support of the change. She added that the fight over the Beaver Pond Forest in Kanata began with a similar rezoning 20 years ago. Taking the extra step to ask the ministry to review the environmental effects of developments proposed for the Huntmar Road properties might prevent a similar outcry in West Carleton, but it doesn’t sit well with developers, who have been waiting to build on the land. 447679-05-11

Lowe’s opens up shop in west end JOHN CURRY John.curry@metroland.com

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson admits he has been to many board meetings of one sort or another. But on Thursday, Jan. 27, he experienced his first board cutting, slicing through a wooden board emblazoned with the message “Lowe’s Grand Opening.” And the mayor performed this grand opening ceremonial board cutting using a

good old fashioned hand saw, rejecting the option of a power saw which he quipped might be dangerous in his hands. Assisted by councillors Shad Qadri, Marianne Wilkinson and Allan Hubley, the mayor zipped through the board as if he were using a power saw. Of course, it helped that much of the board had already been pre-cut, leaving only a small portion that needed the mayor’s sawing effort. This all happened in the lumber section of the new 9,569 square metre Lowe’s

ation of 150 in-store jobs as well as many jobs in the recent construction phase of the project. Store manager Kyle Pickett, who was MC for the opening ceremony, commented that a lot of blood, sweat and tears had gone into getting the new store ready. He also presented a $2,500 donation from Lowe’s to the Education Foundation of Ottawa to help with the purchase of hockey helmets for students that need them at Glen Cairn Public School and John Young Elementary School, both in Kanata. Lowe’s, which was founded in 1946, has grown from a small hardware store in North Carolina to become the second largest home improvement retailer in the world, including being the seventh largest retailer in the United States.

Condors celebrate Aviva win The Capital City Condors have 25,000 reasons to celebrate. The hockey team, which caters to youth with intellectual and physical disabilities, was one of 10 winners in the Aviva Community Fund competition, which handed out a total of $1 million in prize money. The Condors were awarded $25,000 on Jan. 25. “We’re still in a state of shock over winning the Aviva challenge and couldn’t be more excited for the kids,” said Jim Perkins, president of the Condors, in an

email. Jim and his wife Shana, who is the general manager, were on vacation when the win was announced. “We still can’t believe we (were) away for this,” said Jim, who added it’s great the kids and families are getting recognition. Board member and on-ice volunteer Ian Anderson was on hand when the announcement was made to the team and parents. “Everybody yelled, hoot and hollered,” he said. “It was very, very exciting.” CONDORS, see 14

Condors plan to expand CONDORS, from 13 The money will go towards helping the Condors expand. Currently 40 players are on the team and there are 16 children on a waiting list. “The biggest plan is to expand next year, get some more ice time and get the kids more involved,” said Anderson. The funds may also be put towards hockey equipment, fees and a possible trip to the Special Hockey International Annual Tournament in the United States this April.

“It’s really going to help out in a whole bunch of areas,” said Anderson. “We’re extremely appreciative of the generosity of Aviva; we’re very fortunate.” The Capital City Condors were up against nine other ideas in the small projects category. “At the end of the day they rose to the top,” said Paul Fletcher, senior vice president with Aviva Canada. “I was very lucky I was able to be there Tuesday morning and meet many of the players on the team and the coaches. It was a great day.” The concept of the competition is to bring ideas to life that impact a community. “(It’s about) giving them a chance to bring their idea to life and have that opportunity,” said Fletcher. “When you look at the good work these guys do we just don’t shout about it enough.” An independent panel of judges critiqued the final-round submissions. Fletcher said people can still donate to submitted ideas that didn’t win at www.avivacommunityfund. org. “It shows you that small investments made in the right place can make all the difference,” he said.

The Kanata-Hazeldean Lions are hard at work on two New Year’s resolutions – providing residents with more fun at their Monday night bingos and adding a taste of New Orleans to the winter carnival weekend in February.

Make Your Own Wine

Bingos are held on Mondays at 7 p.m. at the Lion Dick Brule Community Centre, 170 Castlefrank Rd. For information, call Lamb at 613-836-6618.

MONDAY BINGOS

Making your own wine is easy to do and ready to bottle 30 days after ordering. Efficient sterilizing equipment, automatic corking machines and bottle filling machines that never, ever overflow makes bottling time customerfriendly and easy to complete in 20 to 30 minutes. Call us or just drop in for details.

“We have a new, enhanced prize board at our Bingos,” said Lions president and bingo co-ordinator, Wilf Lamb. “We have added a progressive super jackpot with a $350 grand prize and a $75 consolation prize if the super pay-out is not won. The new games and prizes are based on people’s preferences in a December survey. So, we’re giving people what they want – to have fun.”

The Feb. 5 Bayou Bash will be held at the Mlacak Centre at 2500 Campeau Dr. from 8 p.m. to midnight. The event is part of the Kanata Chamber of Commerce’s West Fest weekend. “We will be featuring New Orleans music and food,” said Todd Sloan, the event convener. “New Orleans is the birthplace of virtually every genre of North American music. And we will have some of everything at the bash.” The dance (tickets $20) will include a Louisiana buffet, a silent auction, various prizes and a cash bar. In line with West Fest’s objectives, the dance will help support the work of the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre. The Lions will also be presenting their daytime carnival activities on Feb. 5 – a pancake breakfast, sleigh rides, crafts and the ever-popular Ray’s Reptiles – at the Lions’ Den. For dance and carnival information, call Sloan at 613-591-3609 or email toddsloan@me.com.

The west end communities of Ottawa are joining forces to celebrate the winter season in style. The weekend of Feb. 5 and 6 will showcase various events running throughout the Ottawa west region. An initiative being put on by the Kanata Chamber of Commerce, Winter West is a celebration of all things winter in the far west end of Ottawa. Community groups, businesses, associations, non-profit organizations and individuals will be hosting winter-themed events that are open to the public on a day and time of their choice that weekend. All events are posted online at www. winterwest.ca so residents can plan their day accordingly, and a map of the

western area will allow a birds-eye view of the plans. President of the Kanata Chamber of Commerce, Megan Cornell, remarked that this inaugural event will be one the whole family can enjoy. “Winter West is designed to promote our communities and local resources,” said Cornell. “The Kanata Chamber believes our vibrant community creates a supportive environment for business, and in turn our strong local business community keeps our region viable as a place to live, work and play.” Sponsorships for this event are also available. Furnace functions Has your furnace quit? It could be just a blocked vent. Drifting snow can bury a furnace air intake pipe. A common symptom of the blockage is the furnace continuously trying to start up, but never actually turning on. So before making a phone call for furnace repair, go outside and check that the air intakes or the outlets for your furnace are clear of snow. You can erect a shelter that keeps the area clear of snow while not impeding air flow into the intake. It is not only snow that can strangle a furnace, a very dirty filter can cause the same symptoms as a blocked vent and your furnace will not operate. A dirty furnace filter reduces air flow and makes your furnace fan work harder; clean filters can save up to five per cent of total electricity use. Make a note of the filter size which appears on the edge of the filter, buy in bulk and replace them regularly each month during the heating season.

The public will now be able to listen to police interact with prisoners in Ottawa cellblocks. Following allegations of police abuse, audio recordings will be added to video surveillance of the central Ottawa Police Service cellblock starting in February, said Superintendant Mike Flanagan. But the sound recording will have to be turned on manually – something that raised the concern of Mayor Jim Watson. “I don’t fully understand why people would expect something else,” police Chief Vern White told media after the police services board meeting on Monday, Jan. 24. The system isn’t meant to keep tabs on police officers during every moment of their workday, White said. “This is about monitoring actions involving citizens in our care,” White said. “It’s not about monitoring people who are working.” Ideally the Ottawa Police Service would prefer to have a recording device that turns on automatically when it needs to, White said, but that technology is not available. As for how the public can be certain the audio will be recorded when it should be, White said the public needs to put its trust in the police force. “I guess you just have to have some level of trust,” White said. “I’m not suggesting mistakes won’t happen,” he said,

adding that he doesn’t believe any officers will intentionally neglect to turn on the audio to avoid being recorded. A supervising sergeant will be in charge of flicking the audio recording device on. Another change is the addition of a permanent staff sergeant to oversee the cellblock at the central Elgin Street station. Previously, the sergeant split time between the cellblock and the Elgin Street courthouse.

The only way of knowing is to take it to a garage to have it inspected. Batteries will normally last 5-7 years, but other factors may shorten this time significantly. Some examples are a bad alternator or cold temperatures. The cold will also cause the oil to thicken, making it harder for the engine to start. Installing a block heater will help prevent this.

Q

Why is it important to avoid premature loss of baby teeth?

Q

My parents are worried about feeling institutionalized in a retirement home, how do I overcome their fear?

Primary teeth first of all help your child digest probably and have normal development of his/her digestive tract. Primary teeth also hold the spot for the adult tooth to come. If a primary tooth is lost too soon it slows the development of the adult tooth. The neighboring teeth will shift into the missing tooth’s position blocking the growth of the adult tooth, causing a misaligned bite needing orthodontics in the future or causing jaw joint pain. Ask us about the importance of baby teeth, call us today.

The last five months have been quite a roller coaster of emotions for all of us with the death of our parents, Doug & Marilyn Davis, so close together. We would not have gotten through this without all the love and support of our family, friends and our great community. To the grandsons, you guys did a great job and would have made Granny and Grandpa proud. To all the people who brought food, sent flowers, made donations and just helped us get through this difficult timeThank You. We would also like to thank the church choir and David George for singing Mom and Dad’s favorite songs. To the ladies of UCW, the luncheons were delicious and so greatly appreciated. To Rev. Carla Van Delen: Thank you for your compassion, kind words and meaningful service for Mom and for Dad. A special thank you to Gary Thompson for giving Dad such a beautiful send off, and to Isabel Thompson for your witty but emotional eulogy for Mom. To Aunt Lorna, We don’t know what we would have done without you! To Sheila and Laurie: Thank you for all the special meals you made Mom and Dad. Also, thank you for the wonderful suppers between the wakes. John Curry: The write up you did for Mom and Dad was amazing and will be treasured for years to come. Bev Saunders and Tubman staff: Thank you for all your guidance, patience, support and direction during and after the passing of Mom and Dad. We are so fortunate to have such wonderful family and friends. The sky is now brighter with two more shining stars. We loved them lots and miss them more.

Rangers ring in New Year with win Congratulations to KGHA Kanata Rangers Novice B - 2011 champions of the Belleville Bearcats New Year’s Classic Tournament held from Jan. 8 to 10. The girls wrapped up a great weekend in Belleville by bringing home the gold; they were determined to win the hardware and came from behind in the final game. The game was exciting to watch in the big rink; at the end of the first period there was still no score against the Nepean Wildcats.

Nepean came back quickly and ended the second period 20. Our girls never gave up, with everyone making a difference on every shift. They found themselves tying the game with just three minutes left in the third period. It all came down to sudden death, or in this case sudden “victory,” in overtime. The team was ecstatic to see that overtime goal go in. For more information on Kanata girls hockey visit www. kgha.ca

Professor Pierre Bélanger taught New Media at the University of Ottawa, in 1994. The internet, web-sites and instant messaging was still considered novel. Perhaps even a little obscure. We actually devoted hours of class time to learn about search engines, web-sites and messaging. Today, four-year olds can do this with no instruction. But we were still asking: what is the art of the possible? What will communications look like thanks to the internet? They would be instant. They would force real-time dialogue. They would become brief, bite-sized, “user-friendly”. They would change people’s expectations of good communications.

The site is built on 5 principles. It is inclusive, not only of different professions, departments or programs, but of our patients, visitors and community. It is bilingual, so that everything is available in English and French. It is accessible, whether you are visually impaired or not. It is dynamic; inviting visitors to share feedback and patient stories so we can always improve. Finally, it is patient and user-centered. For instance, visitors can use the Directions and Maps section of the site to plan their itinerary from home, to hospital, back home. They can search our physician directory alphabetically, by name or specialty. And they can search information about programs, departments or clinics by keyword. For the first time, users can also follow us on Twitter, at OttawaHospital, and Facebook, on The Ottawa Hospital Facebook Group. We will use these tools to inform the community of important news, as well as maintain an ongoing dialogue about how best to serve our patients. Don’t just take our word for it. Visit www.ottawahospital.on.ca and tell us what you think.

Until recently, however, The Ottawa Hospital had been slow to embrace these changes. Our web-site looked like it had been built not long after 1994. It was hard to update, and didn’t allow instant communications. It didn’t seek out patient and visitor advice, nor promote dialogue. It was not “user-friendly”. In short, it did not live up to expectations of good communications.
