Margarita Gorbounova had a golden run at the Canada Winter Games, held in Halifax, NS from Feb. 11 to 27. Gorbounova, who trains with the Kanata Nordic Ski Club, came in first place in all three para nordic crosscountry races. “It was my goal to win as many gold as I could and I’m happy to have accomplished that,” she said. “I was really lucky to have people to ski with (to train); the Kanata Nordic Ski Club has been really helpful.” The 26-year-old won the women’s 2.5-kilometre standing freestyle race, the 1,000-metre standing sprint para-nordic race and the five-kilometre standing classic mass-start race. “It was great to be able to make history that way,” said Gorbounova. “It was especially great to be the first one to win gold at the Canada Games.” She said she was a little nervous about racing with her guide Vesta Mather, who she’d only raced with once before. “It was a little scary that I was just going to race with someone I hadn’t done that with before but I had confidence in her,” said Gorbounova. “She did a great job guiding, some people are just so good at picking that up.” This is the first time that cross-country skiers with disabilities competed in the Canada Winter Games. Gorbounova has a condition called aphakia and is legally blind, with less than 10 per cent of her vision. “It was awesome to have more para nordic skiers,” she said. “I’m just happy for the opportunity to promote the sport and become more visible and teach people about what we can do.”
