A 24-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder following a domestic dispute in Glen Cairn that sent a woman to hospital with severe head injuries last week.

Robert James Johnston was also charged with aggravated assault, forcible confinement and uttering threats and was scheduled to appear in an Ottawa courtroom on Monday, March 14.

A co-worker said the victim, who he identified as Amanda, 24, was awake and conscious in the hospital on Monday.

Ottawa police and paramedics responded to a call at a semi-detached house on Spearman Lane at 10:26 a.m. on Wednesday, March 9.

Police discovered Amanda lying in a pool of her own blood in a bedroom.

She was wheeled on a stretcher to an ambulance and a police officer carried the woman’s two-year-old daughter from the home.

Police will not comment on the case as it involves domestic abuse and is still under investigation.

Officers were in the duplex during the weekend and on Monday, March 14, guarding the evidence.

Amanda works part time as a cashier at a Kanata LCBO and teaches young children at a Bridlewood day care.

The woman is recovering from her injuries in hospital and improving everyday, said a co-worker from the LCBO, who asked to remain anonymous.

Amanda suffered numerous wounds to her head during the attack, said the man.

Traffic will be redirected from Fernbank Road once construction starts to upgrade the stretch of pavement from a rural section to an urban roadway.

The city hosted a public meeting on March 7 at the Glen Cairn Community Centre where about 30 residents reviewed the proposed plans and provided comments on the reconstruction.

Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley said there was a slight change in the original proposal; the land along Terry Fox Drive at Fernbank is still being farmed. He said when the curb is constructed a cut must be made in order to have room for the width of farming equipment to get on and off the roadway.

“They’ll do what it takes to accommodate him,” said Hubley about the farmer who raised the issue.

During construction, traffic will be redirected to Terry Fox Drive and Eagleson Road using Cope Drive and Romina Street.

As well, Templeford Avenue is being finished and paved before construction on Fernbank begins.

“Templeford will be connected to Fernbank and will be completed in order to access Cope,” said Hubley.

The project includes repaving Fernbank, the addition of sidewalks, cycling lanes and curbs, as well as realigning the intersection at Fernbank and Eagleson roads.

Hubley said the job should be done quickly with as little inconvenience as possible to residents.

The intersection at Fernbank and Eagleson is being realigned so that the two roads will meet at a 90 degree angle. This is being done because a shopping plaza, which Hubley said is set to contain a large grocery retailer and a well-known coffee chain, is set to be constructed across the street.

“We’re doing a slight change to (the intersection) so it comes out at the same point of the new shopping centre,” said Hubley, who added it was easier to do that part of the realignment now instead of waiting for the complex to be built.

Left and right-turn lanes will also be installed at Romina and Templeford, and crews will be replacing the signal lights at Terry Fox to account for widening of the road due to the introduction of cycle lanes and sidewalks.

Project manager Luke Foley said the construction of cycle lanes, sidewalks and curbs is a standard practice in residential communities.

Hubley added he hoped to be making more announcements on other roadwork projects in the area in the coming weeks.

“It was barbaric,” he said. “The friends who have (visited her) are just saddened.”

Police have asked friends and witnesses to keep information about the assault under wraps during the investigation.

Friends and co-workers at the LCBO have set up a trust fund at the Toronto Dominion bank branch on 457 Hazeldean Rd. for the woman to help her pay her bills and care for her two-yearold daughter Hannah.

“We just want to get her moving forward on the road to recovery,” said the co-worker.

“There’s been an outpouring of community support from people who walk into the store,” he said, adding that Amanda appreciates the notes, letters and flowers she has received.

“Amanda is very generous and positive. A lot of people who came into the store knew her because she was such a happy kid.”

Amanda bought a duplex in Glen Cairn about three years ago, said the man, and lived there with the accused.

The woman has no family living in the area, said her co-worker.

“She’s on her own and has been for years,” he said.

Amanda often talked about her daughter at work, said the man.

“It was all about her daughter,” he

said. “I think her daughter has become a focus and a guide for her.”

Julie Martin, who lives across the street from Amanda, said Amanda and Johnston were a quiet couple who kept to themselves.

“She is really nice, a very nice girl,” said Martin. “We’ve seen her at Halloween with the little one dressed up.”

Amanda volunteered at the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre’s early years centre a few years ago, said Terry Beeton, an employee of the early years centre.

“She was a very strong young woman,” said Beeton. “She’s overcome a lot in her personal life, so this was a real shock.”

The Constance Creek Wildlife Refuge is in the running for a $25,000 grant from the Pepsi Refresh Project.

Although the Dunrobin centre did well when it ran for the grant in the fall of last year, finishing 11th, it couldn’t secure one of the top two spots needed in order to claim the money.

“It was encouraging because we got up to number 11 our of 77 ideas in our $25,000 category,” said CCWR founder Lynne Rowe. “I was very encouraged we did that well the first round. We’re hoping we can spread the word further – we have to get in the top two in order to win the money.”

So far, the centre is ranked 14 out of 87 ideas in its category.

“I’m very optimistic this year,” said Rowe.

The Pepsi Refresh Project calls for individuals, businesses or notfor-profit organizations to submit

ideas that will benefit their communities.

The public votes for their favourite ideas and the top-ranked ideas in each monetary category are awarded to help fund their proposals.

“If we get the funding for this, it will make a huge difference on how quickly we’re able to answer the needs for wildlife services in the area,” said Rowe. “We’ll be able to get up and running that much faster.”

Rowe said she signed up for the $25,000 grant because the amount will help get the wildlife refuge up off the ground.

“We really felt that that’s the amount it would take to get us up and running quickly,” she said. “That’s a breakthrough amount for us to be well set up to begin taking in animals this summer.”

It’s Rowe’s goal to have the Ministry of Natural Resources approve the CCWR and be able to foster wildlife this coming summer.

“That’s a hard position to be in,” she said about waiting for ministry approval.

“I know there’s going to be a huge need for animals. I’m hoping we can get enough money to complete what we need to do.”

She said people can vote for the CCWR everyday under the heading “open a wildlife rehabilitation centre for fawns and other wildlife.”

“This is a totally different approach; getting your community caring about your project and wanting to help out, getting them excited about us,” said Rowe. “It’s a very easy way for them to help us out.

They don’t have to fork any money over to us themselves but just vote. We’re asking people to try and find two friends to vote as well.”

Outreach co-ordinator Melissa Kerr started a Facebook photo project with Magnus the stuffed raccoon to help remind people to vote everyday.

“I wanted to give daily reminders to people to vote for us that didn’t feel pushy,” said Kerr, who lives in Katimavik. “Get them excited about voting.”

She chose a raccoon because they are one of the animals that have a hard time in Ottawa.

“I chose Magnus the Raccoon because I feel that he really embodies an animal in

Ottawa that is having a really rough time,” she said. “Often raccoons are in need of rehabilitation and have no where to go.”

She said it’s fun thinking up concepts for where to photograph Magnus voting for the refuge, such as in bed, while eating and even during a visit to Parliament Hill.

“I thought taking photos of plastic wildlife would be something fun and a reminder that people wouldn’t feel uncomfortable with,” said Kerr.

She said she hopes the refuge makes it into the top two because as Ottawa keeps growing, so will the need for wildlife rehabilitation.

“There is no plan for wildlife in Ottawa and we’re constantly growing as a community. It leaves us with displaced wildlife,” said Kerr. “This is important to me because it think wildlife deserve a hand – we live where they live.”

FUNDING Last year, the CCWR managed to raise enough funds to do a 100-foot portion of solid wood fencing for the beginning of an outdoor enclosure.

If the centre wins one of the top two spots, the $25,000 will go towards: • Finishing the wooden fence enclosure.

• Build more individual wildlife enclosures for different species.

• Outfit the clinic with an electrical connection.

• Start up a wildlife hotline.

“I recently attended the national wildlife rehabilitators’ association conference in the states,” said Rowe. “I was really sold on the huge benefit that a wildlife hotline can provide so we’d really like to get something like that up and running. A lot of wildlife issues can be resolved as long as someone is there over the phone.”

Rowe said she has a few fundraisers in the works for the centre, including an event for National Wildlife Week, which is in April, and a baby shower event for spring birth season.

One Katimavik women took an alternative route to dealing with her cancer diagnosis by turning to holistic therapy.

Margaret Maier, who has worked as an environmental health specialist for over 20 years, was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer in 2008 after a trip to her doctor revealed a small lump on her thyroid gland that contained cancerous cells.

Before her diagnosis, Maier had been to her doctor a number of times to deal with issues of depression, lethargy and other complications.

“I received no diagnosis or treatment,” she said. So she completed a hair analysis test and the results were shocking.

“I had high levels of arsenic, lead and antimony,” said Maier, who began researching different detoxification methods that pull heavy metals out of the body. She found one called the ionic cleanse through a friend.

The ionic cleanse uses volts of electricity to stimulate the pores to open in a person’s feet, allowing heavy metals to escape.

“This one I find pulls out the most heavy metals, toxins and acidic residues,” said Maier, who started a detox program with the machine.

Shortly after, she was diagnosed with cancer. She said the doctors told her the best course of action would be to remove the entire thyroid gland.

“It’s a critical gland,” said Maier. “I believe the removal of any gland in your body puts more pressure on the rest of the system.”

Instead, she decided to treat herself with a mixture of holistic remedies and alternative therapies. She said she thinks others should be aware of other treatments for cancer aside from surgery, chemo and radiation.

“When you’re diagnosed with cancer you’re terrified,” said Maier. “There is no alternative information offered. I was still terrified but I chose to opt out of surgery and continue my detoxification.”

Once a week for three months, Maier used the ionic cleanse machine in conjunction with acupuncture and glutathione supplements.

“The acupuncture was effective in combination with the detox to keep my energy stronger,” she said. “The glutathione, which is produced in the liver, as we age we produce less. It’s an antioxidant, immune booster and detoxifier. I really started to feel an improvement in my en-

ergy, my mood, my skin colour and my blood circulation. I knew at a deep level I was healing; my health was improving on a weekly basis.”

The second biopsy done sixth months later revealed there were no more cancerous cells.

“Within six months I was cancer-free,” said Maier. “The doctor gave me no credit whatsoever. As a doctor it’s critical to be open-minded. You can learn from your patients.”

PRACTICE Maier runs Naturally You, a holistic therapy clinic, which offers various alternative services, such as massage, environmental home and workplace inspections, ear candling, and the ionic cleanse detox for people and animals.

“It was through my own experience that this machine was introduced to the practice,” she said. “I’m a results-oriented person. I wouldn’t use this if I didn’t get results.”

She said people need to know what sort of alternative treatments are available to them.

“It’s being overlooked,” she said. “If you focus on detoxifying the body you will feel the benefits. I think it’s critical people are given alternative choices to take back control of their own bodies.”

She said she’s had people come in for various issues, both physical and mental, including cancer, arthritis, joint pain, skin conditions, depression, ADD and ADHD, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Chemicals in a person’s body can come from the air, food, water and unhealthy environments.

“I help the person clean out their body,” said Maier.

Dave Falle said he only decided to go and try it out after seeing the improvements in his wife and a friend of the family.

“I know that I was skeptical, a non believer going into it,” said Falle, who lives in Stittsville. “I think that’s an important point. Most people wouldn’t, I wouldn’t in a million years have done this but I saw the benefits of both my wife and my friend. It does sound a little bit quackery, snake-oilish but I felt the benefits immediately.”

During his first session, he said Maier commented on how the machine was working on his joints.

“You live with it so long, you don’t even think about,” said Falle about his joint pain. “If you had asked me going in, I would have said there’s nothing wrong with me,

I’m fine. While I was sitting in the chair, Maggie looks at the water and says ‘Oh, it’s going into your joints.’ I didn’t even think of that.

Falle, who plays the position of goalie on his hockey team, was thinking about giving up the game before he tried the alternative therapy.

“I was getting to the point where I was ready to give it up because it was hurting too much,” he said.

“I’ve played 11 times this week. I love to be able to do it.”

Maier said being able to help people is the best part of her job.

“At the end of the day I consider myself a teacher of alternative therapies, to help others heal themselves,” she said. “Instead of giving your power away to a doctor it’s about empowering yourself.

My cancer experience has taught me this whole world of alternative therapies and they work. They’re effective.”

A test of endurance

T

he old adage “slow and steady wins the race” doesn’t seem to be something Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson buys into.

Ottawa’s mayor has blown through his first 100 days in office with nary a flinch, and blew even faster through the city’s 2011 budget – in a mere four hours, with little protest from his fellow councillors who applauded him from around the table.

He’s been spotted at what seems like every single community event in the city since inauguration, popping into a Kanata school concert at 9 a.m. and showing up at an Orleans art show half an hour later, keeping a running commentary on Twitter all the while.

The question is, can he keep it up?

Watson may not be a long distance runner, but he could learn a lesson from one if he expects to keep up the pace heading out of his honeymoon stage and into the real work of mayoral marriage.

He’ll especially need a strong endurance strategy if he hopes to fast-forward the city’s light rail plans, getting the controversial project tendered and under way this year, as he told the Kourier-Standard he plans to do.

In a noble effort to save the city some embarrassment, Watson has supported several councillors’ requests that city staff push the whole painfully slow project ahead two years in order to avoid any clash with the 150-year anniversary of Confederation in 2017, instead of drawing out construction to 2019.

But skepticism for the light rail project runs as deep as the proposed tunnel under downtown, and later this month Watson will likely face his toughest and longest battle yet to nail down the details of his transit plans for light rail and OCTranspo route cuts and amendments. He’ll also need some energy for OC Transpo contract talks beginning around the same time, which promise to add some colour to his otherwise monochrome mayoral record so far.

On top of all that, he still plans to run from one end of the city to the other attending the many community events he could be sending his deputies to.

With a schedule like that, Watson risks burnout or at least a damaging slip-up or two.

The moral, then, is a preventative one: slow down and take a breather, or risk losing the race entirely.

Yes, it’s the 21st century – so what?

he weakest of all arguments is that we’re in the 21st century.

You hear it all the time. Somebody makes a proposal. Somebody else opposes. Then the supporters say to the opponents: “Don’t you know it’s the 21st century?”

Those of us who grew up in the 20th century remember the argument. It’s just been updated a bit.

There are provincial government proposals to loosen liquor laws at outdoor events. The police say they’re worried.

The police are accused of not knowing it’s the 21st century. The police have a feeling that drunken louts in the new century will closely resemble drunken louts in the previous one.

There is a proposal to put up some giant flashing billboard by the new convention centre, shining video and maybe, just maybe, advertising down on Rideau Canal skaters, tourists and distracted motorists. “It’s the 21st century,” the proponents say, when others ask why we need to complicate the natural beauty of that part of the city with humongous flashing pixels.

He would not want to be skating in the 21st century with that thing beaming pictures down on his head.

In the 21st century that we all recognize it is possible to do all sorts of things that were not possible in the 20th. This does not, however, mean that we have to do them.

Take Twitter, for example. With Twitter, you can tell the entire world, more or less, what you think in 140 characters or less. On the day the great editor and writer Jim Travers died, tributes began appearing on Twitter, little notes saying how much Travers was appreciated, how

much he would be missed. It was kind of a tribal ritual, with virtually everyone on Parliament Hill and many people beyond it, adding their abbreviated voices.

Travers, who loved to laugh, would have laughed. Here was this technological miracle and people, one after the other, were using it to write five or 10 words saying, in effect, “I’m sad too.” It’s not that they weren’t sincere, it’s that this piece of 21st century technology trivialized their sincerity.

A few days later, a memorial gathering was held at the Ottawa Conference Centre – a railway station for much of the 20th century. Many of the same people came and many others, 500 in all, and they behaved in an old-technology way.

They talked and they listened and they laughed and they cried and they hugged each other. There was more power and emotion in that gathering than in a billion tweets.

The 21st century gives us the choice.

We can tweet or we can show up. Showing up still works best.

In Ottawa, the second-weakest of reasons for doing something is that the city’s image needs changing. People think Ottawa is dowdy, we are told by proponents of giant electronic billboards. We need to show some more

Ottawa residents will see an extra 2.45 per cent (about $75 for an average home) tacked onto their tax bill this year.

City council made quick work of its budget on March 8, passing the budget in about four hours with few changes.

After the budget passed, councillors broke out in a standing ovation for Mayor Jim Watson Jim Watson, whose first Mayor budget met his election commitment to keep the tax increase under 2.5 per cent.

Some councillors, such a Rideau-Rockliffe’s Peter Clark, weren’t happy with the congeniality around the council horseshoe and said there should have been more debate.

“If we are going to start out the process with ‘Thou shalt approve this budget,’ we don’t need all this discussion,” Clark said.

Most of the discussion on the budget happened during committee meetings that have been taking place since the draft budget was tabled in January. Those discussions led to a few tweaks before council voted on it last week.

The water and sewer rate is also going up 3.9 per cent, or about $24 for an average household.

Last year’s tax increase was 3.77 per cent, and it was 4.9 for the two years before that to catch up from the 0.3 per cent increase in the first year of the previous council’s term.

Councillors sped though each of the budgets for committees such as environment and community and protective services. Council had already passed the operating before a handful of councillors

(Rainer Bloess, Bob Monette and Doug Thompson) raised their hands to object to portions of the transit budget.

There was some discussion surrounding the perceived benefit of purchasing 75 double-decker buses for OC Transpo.

Some councillors, including Monette (Orleans) suggested the money could be better spent to prevent route cutbacks. But Alain Mercier, the head of OC Transpo, said the ongoing savings from the buses, which are cheaper to run and maintain, will pay off in the long run.

The move is expected to save the city $10 million a year by 2015.

Another concern raised by Capital Ward Coun. David Chernushenko was the cost of the Alta Vista Transportation Corridor link, a new $62-million, 1.2-kilometre section of road from Riverside Drive to the Ottawa General Hospital campus.

Vivi Chi, the city’s manager of transportation planning, said the city will be looking to save on costs by finding efficiencies during the engineering process.

Some councillors bemoaned the lack of investment in roads and sidewalks in their wards. The city is spending about $30 million on infrastructure renewal in 2011, but it should be spending more than twice that amount in order to replace aging infrastructure, said Wayne Newell, general manager of infrastructure services.

Councillors did vote to add the election rebate program back into the budget for a year so city staff can study the impact the program has before deciding whether to axe it or keep it.

The program reimburses people who make contributions of $50 or more to municipal election candidates.

Rideau-Goulbourn Coun. Scott Moffatt wants to streamline the budget process.

He introduced a motion asking council to consider developing multi-year budgets.

The city treasurer’s office will study that possibility, and council’s governance renewal subcommittee will debate it, likely in the fall. Coun. Stephen Blais (Cumberland) also introduced a motion aimed at changing the budget process – he wants the city to think about adopting a “balanced scorecard” approach. That involves comparing the city’s priorities to what it is spending in different areas.

First, rather than spend money on field staff such as by-law officers, the City of Ottawa and other area municipalities adopted a complaintsbased approach years ago, whereby the onus was put on citizens to call in complaints about potholes, unplowed roads, ice-covered sidewalks, littered parks, burnt-out street lights, plugged storm drains, abandoned buildings, overgrown hedges, garbage-strewn properties, barking dogs, noisy parties, and so on.

Small wonder then that numerous calls are made, including multiple, repeated complaints about matters that might never have arisen had proper standards and by-law enforcement procedures been put in place by our municipal government.

Second, many 311-related incidents involve strangers rather than well-

To the editor, Some City of Ottawa officials are now complaining about the people who use the 311 system primarily to report matters needing attention by the city, and much is being made of calls about “neighbours.”

However, the notion that citizens should try to sort things out with the source of the problem, and if that does not work then call 311, has aspects which are both bizarre and potentially dangerous.

Two points should suffice to persuade our municipal officials to play the hand that they dealt themselves, and to stop blaming citizens for using 311 as it is intended to be used.

Watson says he keeps a binder of his 65-or-so election promises at his desk, he opens it once a week to check the progress he has made on those promises.

“I see those campaign commitments I made as my contract with the public,” Watson said. “They gave me my marching orders on Oct. 25 (Election Day) and they expect me to follow through on those promises.”

So far, he has knocked off about 15 of those promises in his first budget.

The biggest one was keeping this year’s tax increase to 2.5 per cent. It’s a commitment he made for each of the four years of his term. The first year, Watson’s “honeymoon” budget, will stick out as the eas-

iest, particularly because the province took on the cost of some social programs, freeing up about $25 million for the city this year.

Under former mayor Larry O’Brien’s tenure, the tax hike was small in the first year of the term, was double the rate of inflation in the last three years of the term. That’s because past council’s raided the city’s reserve funds to head off tax increases.

“The city went through a number of years of tax freezes, and guess what happens the following year? The taxes go up above the rate of inflation, Watson said.

“We saw that in the last council.”

Both councillors and citizens expressed their support for a 2.5 per cent increase, Watson said.

Mayor marks 100th day with first budget “They see that as a figure that allows us to grow as a city, and also that it’s in the rate of inflation,” Watson said.

Still, the city will be spending more this year than last year, especially on social housing (Watson made a $14-million commitment to bolster funding) and freezing recreation fees – another campaign promise.

Watson said much the new money the city is spending is due to new developments and growth.

“As new subdivisions open, there are more roads to plow and sidewalks to plow,” he said. “If you go down to Riverside South, month to month you wouldn’t even recognize it because there are so many houses going up there. You see what’s happening in the east end. You see what’s happening in Kanata – these are huge developments that are taking place … The populations are exploding there and we have to provide those services.”

There are also 75 kilometers of new roads for the city to maintain, not to mention new parks, and that is not possible without adding more staff, Watson said.

This year, the city will hire 295 net new positions: 45 firefighters, 24 paramedics and 75 bus drivers who will help the city save money be reducing the amount of overtime drivers work.

“It’s mostly people on the front line providing services because our city is growing,” Watson said.

While making appearances at events is usually an election tactic, Watson said he won’t be cutting back on public appearances now the campaign – and his first 100 days – are behind him.

“I don’t want to lose touch with the community and the quickest way to lose touch is to get engulfed in splendid isolation down here at city hall,” Watson said.

mission will hear ideas to make the bus system more efficient, including route cutbacks, as well as a new business plan for OC Transpo.

“For far too many years, the system has been micromanaged and cobbled together to the point where it is no longer financially sustainable,” Watson said.

The debate could prove to be the most divisive yet for this congenial council.

“It’s going to be a challenging debate because it becomes very personal,” Watson said, with councillors defending individual routes in their wards that will affect their residents.

Transit is also on the mayor’s mind when it comes to the city’s planned $2.1billion light rail system.

Keeping the costs within the budget, which is estimated in 2009 dollars – won’t be easy.

“I’ll be fully at ease when the tenders come in,” Watson said. “Until those figures come in, we can estimate as best we can, but the reality is it will be up to bidders to come up with a price.

But Watson said he’s committed to seeing the project through.

“Until we have the numbers nailed down, I am not going to be celebrating the start of the project. But I am very much committed to getting on with this,” Watson said. “I certainly will view it as a failure on my part if we’re not able to get the transit system on light rail construction started during this term of council,” he added.

Cornwall police are investigating an alleged assault after a Kanata Stallions goaltender was injured during a Central Canada Hockey League playoff game between the Stallions and the Cornwall Colts on Sunday, March 13.

Stallions netminder Scott Shackell left the game with a concussion after he was checked by Colts forward Michael Borkowski while playing the puck behind the net, causing him to lose his helmet as he fell and hit his head on the ice.

Borkowski was given a major penalty and game misconduct for charging Shackell just 57 seconds into Game 3.

Cornwall police Const. Brenda MacIntosh said the investigation is in its preliminary stages and that they are gathering evidence based on the entire game.

Without Shackell, the Stallions lost the game 7-1 and now trail the best-of-seven series 2-1 heading into Game 4 in Kanata on Tuesday, March 15.

The Stallions, who said the concussion will sideline their goaltender for the rest of the series and maybe the entire playoffs, are calling on the league to crack down on goaltender interference.

The CCHL announced it will issue indefinite suspensions to players who received game misconducts on both teams following last Sunday’s game.

The league said it will take further action once the police investigation is completed.

Colts defenceman Matthew Zanardo was given a four-minute penalty for spearing Stallions forward Brandon Bussey, plus a match penalty for attempting to injure Bussey after cross-checking him in the back of the head while he was on the ice.

Zanardo will have to face the music for his actions, Colts head coach Ian MacInnis said.

“He did lose it for an amount of time – his emotions took over,” said MacInnis. “He must deal with the consequences coming at him.”

Stallions’ forward Ryan Bradley received a “travesty of the game” misconduct during the March 13 game after he gave Colts fans the one-fingered salute, while teammate Nick Samoluk was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for changing.

CCHL president Kevin Abrams said he has also taken issue with

the conduct of both coaches – MacInnis and Stallions’ Adam Dewan – even though no penalties were called on them.

“It’s clear there has to be a level of respect with the coaches,” he said. “That’s something we’re going to address as a league going forward. They’ll be a higher expectation placed on those coaches to, first of all, control their own emotions and secondly, to make sure their players are under better control.”

Abrams wouldn’t comment on the issues specifically, but said coaches could be fined or suspended in the future.

ZERO TOLERANCE Shackell’s mother said the league needs to take action to clamp down on hits to the head and goalie interference.

“There should be zero tolerance for this,” said Mary-Ann Shackell. “This is not part of the game.

“I think it’s time they did something about this kind of behaviour. This is not part of hockey and nor should it be – it’s sickening,” she said. “Some education has to start happening from the NHL down with regards to hits to the head.”

Shackell has played 15 years without a concussion and was close to landing a partial athletic scholarship at the University of Michigan.

This year he has suffered two concussions, both in games against the Cornwall Colts.

Sunday’s hit left Shackell with a bump on the back of his neck and whiplash.

Shackell is still experiencing headaches, said his mother.

“These headaches are ongoing,” she said. “He had a previous concussion in November – after a day he was feeling fine, but not this time.”

Shackell was scheduled to meet with a specialist in head injuries on Wednesday, March 16.

On Tuesday, March 15, Shackell made a statement to Cornwall police about Sunday’s game.

Dewan said the league should have clamped down the first time a Cornwall player ran the Stallions’ goaltender on Friday, March 11, when Colts forward Kyle Baun upended Sheckell.

“None of this should have happened,” he said. “If they had suspended him right away that would have set the bar.”

WARNING Instead, Abrams sent a directive to all of the league’s officials and coaches on March 13, outlining that no leniency would be permissible regarding any contact to goaltenders.

Baun was assessed a two-minute goaltender interference penalty late in the game when he collided with Shackell behind the net.

Abrams said the right call was made by the on-ice officials and that he was told the Kanata goaltender was not injured on the play. The play was not reviewed for supplemental discipline by the league.

“If the letter didn’t do that (prevented another incident), then I don’t know why a suspension would have,” Abrams said. “That player (Baun) wasn’t involved in any transgressions the next game. I don’t think there’s any connection.

“We have to support the referees on the ice. We can’t re-referee the game.”

The hit induced a skirmish, resulting in three 10-minute misconducts on each team.

Kanata was leading 3-0 at the time of the incident. They would go on to win 3-1 as Shackell made 61 saves.

“The frustrating thing from my perspective is I sent this out on Sunday morning (March 13) and in that game alone there were three contacts to goaltenders,” said Abrams.

“I don’t know if that’s a terrible coincidence or just being disrespectful of the league direction, but it’ll clearly be part

of what happens when we issue the suspensions. Going forward there will become clear direction as far as what the league’s policy will be.”

Dewan said the Colts may be trying to win the playoff series by running the Stallions goaltender.

“He’s probably, in my mind, the best goalie in the league and they intentionally knock him out,” he said. “Is there a set plan to run our goalie and try to win games?”

MacInnis said he has never told his players to run the Stallions crease.

“It’s not what I do,” he said.

“I’ve been at this for some time. I have no intention of asking kids to go out and do things that don’t make sense.”

MacInnis said he felt bad about Shackell’s injury.

“He’s a great kid and a great player,” he said.

“At no time have I instructed, nor would Mike Borkowski, do what (he’s) accused of,” he added.

“Borkowski was clearly trying to retrieve the puck.”

Colts forward Michael Rowbotham said MacInnis told his players not to run the goaltender before the start of Game 3.

“He made it very clear we weren’t supposed to go near the goalies,” said Rowbotham. “We’re hoping Scott Shackell can get back in the game. You don’t like to see stuff like that in hockey on either side.”

Abrams said league vice-presi-

dent of hockey operations, Bruce Baskin, has met with team officials and would talk to both coaches prior to the start of Game 4. Abrams added he has talked to both owners that he expects the shenanigans will subside.

“This is a terrible string of events,” he said. “My hope is that what usually happens, happens (in Game 4). When that conduct to the game happens the next game is usually much more controlled.”

Although he wouldn’t be playing in Game 4 for the Stallions, Bradley said the league has to do something to reduce the number of hits to the head in the league.

“In all of hockey head contact, even in the NHL, is something that needs to be changed – fine players, fine coaches,” said Bradley. “A lot of guys don’t care if they hurt another player.”

Bradley said he had a concussion earlier this year in a game against Cumberland, and the Stallions best centre, Brent Bisbee, was knocked out indefinitely with a concussion in a game against Hawkesbury this month.

“He told me yesterday he’s having trouble reading – he’s not going to be able to play for two weeks,” said Bradley. “I just think (hits to the head) should be a suspension.

“There’s only so many hits to the head you’re gonna take before they’re going to say, ‘Either you’re going to die if you take another hit or you can’t play anymore.’”

Adam Dewan led the Kanata Stallions to a 27-point improvement over last season, allowing them to reach the Central Canada Hockey League’s playoffs for the first time since 2008.

On March 8, the Stallions rookie bench boss was named the league’s Coach of the Year for his efforts. Dewan was also named to the league’s first all-star team three days later. “It’s something you don’t expect,� Dewan said. “I think every coach in this league is a good coach and there are teams with higher records than us.

After a rollercoaster season, Kanata finished the season in seventh place with a 28-28-6 record and secured a playoff berth for the first time in three years thanks to a 4-1 victory over the Hawkesbury Hawks on Feb. 25 – their second-last game of the season.

Dewan – who was hired last August after working as an assistant coach with the Ottawa 67’s – credits the cohesion on the team as a key reason for their success. “We didn’t make that many changes at the trade deadline,� the Kanata native said. “We just made a couple of key trades at the start of the year.�

Chief among them was the acquisition of goaltender Scott Shackell from the Carleton Place Canadians on Sept. 23.

Shackell went 25-17-2 with a .915 save percentage, 2.93 goals-against average and three shutouts after he was traded to his hometown team, along with forward Zach Rodier, for a thirdround 2012 draft pick and a player development fee.

His play allowed the team to make quite the turnaround after starting the season 0-4-1 prior to his arrival.

He was named also named to the league’s second all-star team for his efforts. “With 10 rookies and a lot of new faces to the team this year, bringing in Scott definitely solidified our goaltending and helped us win a lot of key games,� Dewan said. “It helps our young guys, for the mistakes they

Dewan was hired after former bench boss Vince Malette got a job as an assistant coach of the German Elite League’s Berlin Eisbaren last July.

When Dewan was brought on, the hope was the Stallions would go from earning 35 points in 2009-10 to making the post-season dance this year.

There reward: a matchup with the powerhouse Cornwall Colts, which started with Game 1 on March 10.

With Game 4 scheduled for March 15, after press deadline, the Stallions

were trailing 2-1 in the series.

Kanata went 1-4 against the Colts this season. “That was the goal from Day 1 – to get this team into the playoffs,� he said prior to the start of the series. “It’s a whole new season. There are no more rookies. Everyone’s played a full season. You go out and play hard and don’t worry about them – worry about yourself – and play as a team, good things will happen.�

With the Stallions hosting the Fred Page Cup – eastern Canada’s junior A championship – in 2012, becoming an elite team will be the next step.

It was déjà vu all over again for Mark Borowiecki at Scotiabank Place.

Only three years ago the then 18year-old Bridlewood native was pulling on a Sens jersey after Ottawa had selected him with their 139th pick in the fifth round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft held at Scotiabank Place.

Last week, the 21-year-old blueliner took the next step up the ladder of professional hockey, signing a two-way entry level contract with the Senators, agreeing to start playing for the team’s American Hockey League farm team in Binghamton, N.Y. “It was kind of surreal when I got down there,” said Borowiecki. “I remember walking out and giving a big sigh saying ‘I can’t believe that just happened.”

Borowiecki surrendered his final year of eligibility at Clarkston University in Potsdam, N.Y., to play for the Binghamton Senators next year.

“For me that was probably the most difficult part,” said Borowiecki. “I can’t say enough good things about the (Clarkson) coaches and the team.”

The Bridlewood native was named captain of the Clarkson Golden Knights during his junior year and led his team into the East Coast Conference playoffs until they were bounced

by Harvard last week.

Borowiecki played for the Smiths Falls Bears for two years in the Canadian Junior Hockey League before heading to Clarkson.

He was named CJHL defenceman of the year and a league first-team all star during his final season with the Bears.

Known as a physical two-way defenceman, Borowiecki said he knows he’ll have to ramp up his game to play in the AHL. For now, Borowiecki is just soaking up the prospect of one day playing for his hometown team in the NHL. “I’ve been a Sens’ fan for as long as I can remember,” said Borowiecki. “To get a chance to play and just be in the organization – I’m pretty excited.”

and to be recognized among this group for this year it was a high honour,” said Lelli, who founded the Kanata Rhythmic Sportive Gymnastics Club in 1975 with former Ottawa Gymnastics Club president Sandy McManus.

Lelli, who hails from the former Czechoslovakia, first started her path in rhythmic gymnastics at the age of five. After coming to Canada to study at the University of Ottawa, Lelli said she noticed a lack of gymnastics clubs in the area.

So she set about the task of creating one in Kanata. She sat in on meetings when the Bridlewood Community Elementary School was built and had some input into its design.

“I wanted to make sure it had a nice high ceiling because of the props that are used. They compete with ropes, ribbons, balls and hoops and I wanted this gym to have a ceiling that was high enough,” Lelli said. “And it also has a nice wooden floor.”

The club has grown into the largest rhythmic gymnastics club in Ontario – but it doesn’t have a permanent home.

“I’ve been on a crusade…for 35 years it seems, to get a permanent home for this club,” said Lelli. “We are always on the move – different halls and gyms and churches in and

she said. “The obvious would be love for physical activity in general. But it goes beyond that; it’s values that can be easily transferable in their every day life and decorate their lives, such as team work, such as comradeship.”

Ottawa may face its darkest hour on March 26 – but in a good way.

Earth Hour, the worldwide event that began in Sydney, Australia in 2007, asks individuals to turn off the lights and reduce their energy use from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Last year, an estimated 10 million Canadians participated in the effort to raise awareness about sustainability issues.

Earth Hour has become the most successful voluntary event in the history of humankind, said Hydro Ottawa’s chief conservation officer Roger Marsh at city hall’s unveiling of an Earth Hour banner on March 7. This is the fourth consecutive year that Ottawa will take part in the event.

Hosted by the World Wildlife Federation (WWF), Earth Hour saw a record 128 countries participating in 2010. But there is always room for improvement, said Paulette Roberge, head of communication for Ottawa’s WWF bureau.

“The main focus this year is to try to get Canadians to think beyond the hour,” she said. “Yes, we’ve had a very successful campaign since 2007, but it’s not enough to have people do it for only one hour.”

Canadians should think of ways to minimize carbon emissions and cut down on energy consumption every day, said Roberge. She also stressed the need

Lelli ‘like a mother to us’ LELLI, from 16 Three of her young charges were quick to gush kind words about their mentor.

Caitlin Somers said she turned to coaching when she blew a knee during competition. And once she turned 18, she decided to give back to the club that has given her so much.

“Dasa was my coach when I started at age six,” Somers said.

“I moved away and then came back, just so she would coach me. She’s like a mother to us but when she asks us for our best, she expects us to deliver.

It feels good to please her. I love this sport and I wouldn’t want to do anything else, even after not being able to compete anymore.

I see how much she gives as a coach and I thought I could too.”

For younger students, Sarah Manyoki, 13 and Marie Arsenault, 12, they echo the same sentiment.

“Dasa is like our mom. She supports us and gets us through everything,” said Sarah.

“Not just gymnastics, but life,” added Marie. “She asks us to colour our life and we do that through gymnastics - eating healthy, getting exercise, making new friends at competitions… and travelling to events – that’s the fun part.”

Lelli, who is a full-time coach and a new grandmother to a beautiful baby girl, says it’s about enjoying all life has to offer.

“It is also about enjoying the competition in a very healthy way. It teaches them to feel confident about their lives through exposure in gymnastics. They become better at public speaking, they carry themselves much better. And they give back to the community. Many of them become coaches.”

She says she’s looking forward to her trip to Switzerland this summer to take part in the World Gymnaestrada when she will take 20 athletes to showcase what they’ve learned in their club.

“I’m so excited I could burst,” she said. “It’s a chance for them to show how much they enjoy gymnastics and what it means to them. The focus is on team work and what we can all do together as a club. That’s what it’s really all about.”

Nine awards were presented to male and female coaches from Ontario for their contribution to sport and leadership.

This year’s edition of the Ottawa Folk Festival will see a new format and venue for the popular annual concert event.

The festival, which had been held at the west-end Britannia Park for 16 of its first 17 years, will move to Hog’s Back Park, and will run over four days from Aug. 25 to 28.

“We thought we can attract more people by moving into a more central location,” said festival supervisor Mark Monahan.

Monahan said the new venue will be easier to access by public transit.

“We wanted to come up with a better location that can be served by public transit and allow people to use their other means since Hog’s Back is right on the bike path,” he said.

The relocation, according to Monahan, is imperative to solidify the festival’s future as is the addition of a fourth day to the lineup.

The plan is intended to meet the needs of the festival’s existing patrons with its central location and to attract and develop new audiences by showcasing one of Ottawa’s more beautiful public parks, adjacent to the stunning Ottawa landmark known as Hog’s Back Falls.

“Our feedback was that the public wanted more diversified programming and this will give us an opportunity to do that,” Monahan noted.

The festival lineup will be unveiled on May 25, with tickets going on sale to the general public on Saturday, May 28. This will be preceded by a special pre-sale for Ottawa Folk Festival insiders.

The festival is a celebration of music, dance, visual arts and community, featuring an eclectic mix of musical performances, plus participatory music workshops, special children’s and family performances, wellness activities, beer gardens, artisan and craft vendors.

Ottawa Hospital receives better breast cancer detection KRISTY WALLACE

Ottawa women now have a chance to get better breast cancer detection thanks to new and innovative breast cancer equipment at the Ottawa Hospital’s Civic, General and Riverside campuses.

“(This new equipment) lets our radiologist see more,” said Guy Morency, director of medical imaging at the Otttawa Hospital. “What you see is what you get. This technology lets us get the best quality we possibly can.”

The hospital received more than $100,000 from TELUS’ Go

Pink Campaign, which donated $25 from every pink Blackberry sold across Canada to new digital mammography machines in regional hospitals. The campaign started last May and raised more than $2.45 million nationally.

“I know from personal experience the wait for a new test after an inconclusive result from an

older style analog machine can be agonizing,” said Jill Scharr, vice-president of TELUS community affairs. “Digital technology would have allowed the radiologist to get a better look the first time.”

Scharr said the new equipment will be able to detect smaller tumors, saving lives and taxpayer dollars by reducing re-testing caused by inconclusive tests.

There are currently two mammography machines at the Civic Hospital and one at the General Campus. Two more will be ar-

riving shortly at the Riverside Campus.

Morency said these machines will also help reduce wait times for women getting mammograms done.

The Civic Hospital sees 21,000 patients per year from all age groups.

“The digital mammography machine allows our staff to process four cases per hour, up from three with the traditional mammogram X-rays,” Morency said.

It’s tax time, but don’t stress out – you may be eligible for free services offered by the Nepean, Rideau and Osgoode Community Resource Centre.

There is a free community volunteer income tax clinic April 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Barrhaven Fellowship Reform Church.

“It’s the first time at this location, and we are hoping to have two full clinics which would be 14 appointments per day,” said NROCRC’s Kim Ethier.

Trained volunteers will help you complete your income tax and benefit returns or answer any questions you may have.

“We provide this service because we feel that low-income clients should have access to filling their taxes at nocost, their financial struggles should not include having to pay for services

in which they may receive benefits,” said Ethier.

The most stressful issue for some clients, according to Ethier, is if the client owes money to Revenue Canada. “We will review their return for discrepancies or if an error was made. But if at the end they still owe we can refer them to different supports from our partner agencies ie. Entraide Budgetaire or InCharge Canada or our other services like Counseling or Housing Loss Prevention,” said Ethier.

The tax clinics are for low-income individuals: families, seniors, students and newcomers from the NROCRC catchment.

“We only do personal tax returns,” she said.

Those eligible include singles earning up to $30,000; couples earning up to$35,000. If there are children, the amount of $2,000 is added to the income for each dependent.

New machines have better images MAMMOGRAPHY, from 22 Geoff Doherty, a radiologist with the Ottawa Hospital, said the new machines have a much crisper image than the traditional mammogram.

The X-rays from the new machines look kind of like a high-definition television compared to the older machines, he said.

“We can find smaller cancers in difficult-to-read dense breasts,” Doherty

said.

According to the Ottawa Hospital Foundation, traditional mammogram Xrays do not penetrate dense breast tissue – so it’s harder to find tumours. The new digital equipment generates magnified images of breast tissue.

“This partnership with TELUS will continue to allow us to provide patient care with state-of-the-art equipment,” said Morency.

COURTNEY SYMONS Trips to the pump are packing a punch these days as gas prices continue to rise in Ottawa, across Canada, and around the world.

Although filling the tank is hard to avoid, there are ways to save money and maximize fuel efficiency.

GasBuddy.com, a website based out of Regina, offers a list of the cheapest gas prices in many areas.

“Most of the time, you won’t even have to go that far out of your way,” said Jason Toews, cofounder of the GasBuddy website. “You can save money just by knowing where to go.”

Prices are constantly updated, allowing users to compare gas stations in their vicinity and choose accordingly. GasBuddy even has a downloadable application for the iPhone.

In addition to gas prices, GasBuddy offers tips for drivers to maximize their mileage.

“It’s actually better to use the AC on the highway than it is to open the windows,” Toews said.

The air flowing through the vehicle increases aerodynamic drag, causing the engine to burn up to 10 per cent more fuel with the effort.

With snow still on the ground, however, air conditioning isn’t yet a concern. Many Canadians begin their days by warming up the engine as they slough off snow and ice from their vehicle.

“There is a misconception about how long is needed to warm up your car before driving,” said Korey Kennedy, manager of public and government affairs for the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) of north and east Ontario. “Many people think that five minutes are need-

ed to fully warm up the engine, but thirty to forty-five seconds will do the trick,” he said.

Idling a vehicle for more than a minute is a waste of fuel, he added. Turning off the car and restarting it requires less gas than to keep it running.

Kennedy also suggested taking anything unnecessary out of the trunk or back seat. More weight within the vehicle requires more fuel to move it.

The “jack rabbit start,” as Kennedy called it, should be avoided at all costs. That means taking time to stop or start, and attempting to maintain a constant speed. A good way to maximize fuel efficiency is to use cruise control whenever possible.

Additionally, the faster a vehicle goes, the more the drag increases. Driving 100 kilometres per hour instead of 120 reduces fuel consumption by about 15 per cent, said Toews. Most cars achieve optimal fuel efficiency at about 90 kilometres per hour.

larly is another way to get the most out of the gas tank. One tire that is under-inflated by two pounds of air per square inch (PSI) increases fuel consumption by one per cent. Kennedy suggested checking the tires once a month to ensure proper inflation.

Gas prices will continue to fluctuate and potentially keep increasing. This variance happens for a number of reasons, Toews said. Recent revolts in Libya, the supplier of two per cent of the world’s crude oil, have certainly contributed to the rising costs, but are not the only reason for increased prices.

“We’ve been cooped up inside all winter long,” Toews said.

“We’re tired of it. We want to get outside and go places.” As the weather gets nicer, people drive more, and with this increased demand comes increased domestic gas prices.
