Express bus routes will make fewer stops in the morning starting April 17 in an effort to get commuters downtown faster. Buses will still drop off passengers if they request a stop. Kanata, Stittsville, Richmond and Bells Corners routes will make drop-offs only from the Queensway to Westboro station. OC Transpo says customers who normally board express routes at these stations can use other routes. Express routes will continue to make all stops in the afternoon rush hour. There will be a few other tweaks to bus service as part of OC Transpo’s regular quarterly service changes. Kanata South residents will likely have less crowded buses starting April 17, said Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley. Hubley sent out a press release to announce that he was successful in getting OC Transpo to add 11 more articulated buses on routes 61 and 66 during peak hours. That will add between 18 and 24 per cent more capacity during the morning and afternoon commutes, Hubley stated. “We will receive some of the first double-decker and new articulated buses as they are delivered,” Hubley stated. Commuters who work in Gatineau will be able to hop on the 96 bus to Kanata on the Quebec side of the river for a few afternoon rush-hour trips. Route 63 will be expanded to start earlier in Stittsville.

A woman who was assaulted in her Glen Cairn home two weeks ago has been released from hospital and is now recuperating. The 24-year-old Glen Cairn woman, identified as Amanda by her co-workers at the LCBO at 457 Hazeldean Rd., was taken to hospital with severe injuries to her head. Amanda was discovered unconscious and brutally beaten in her home on Spearman Lane by a co-worker on March 9, according to the Facebook group Ottawa Girl Needs Your Help, created by friends and co-workers. She has since been released from hospital. “From what I heard she’s fairly isolated right now and not allowed to talk to too many people,” said a co-worker. “It is unimaginable to even believe for a second what Amanda is going through at this time,” said an entry on the Facebook page. “As Amanda recovers she will be unable to work and will require your financial support.” Robert James Johnston, 24, who lived in the same house as the victim, has been

charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, forcible confinement and uttering threats. He appeared in an Ottawa courtroom on March 14. Police will not comment on the case as it involves domestic abuse and is still under investigation. Amanda works part time as a cashier at a Kanata LCBO and teaches young children at a Bridlewood day care. Amanda volunteered at the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre’s early years centre a few years ago, said Terry Beeton, an employee of the early years centre. “She was a very strong young woman,” said Beeton. “She’s overcome a lot in her personal life, so this was a real shock.” Friends and co-workers at the LCBO have set up an account at the Toronto Dominion bank branch at 457 Hazeldean Rd. for the woman to help her pay her bills and care for her 18-month-old daughter Hannah. Donations can be accepted at any Toronto Dominion bank; the branch number is 3295 and the account number is 6423231. The group has also set up a Facebook fundraising group, Ottawa Girl Needs Your Help, which already has a membership of 335 members. “I think we’re up to 287 members in 24 hours,” said a co-worker who wished to remain anonymous.

Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley is calling on the National Capital Commission to allow the city to start work planning the extension of Hope Side Road. The City of Ottawa needs permission to complete an environmental assessment for the project on Greenbelt land owned by the NCC. Once the EA is completed, the city can choose between alternatives to reduce traffic congestion in Bridlewood: either expand Richmond Road or extend Hope Side Road to Hwy 416.

“I want the EA completed this year so I can get money (for) whatever recommendation,” Hubley said. Out of the two choices, Hubley favours the Hope Side Road extension. “I like the idea of having two different routes going out of Bridlewood,” he said. “If we extend Hope Side Road you won’t disrupt traffic and you’ll provide an alternate route.” The NCC is currently pre-

paring a Greenbelt Master Plan, which is expected to be completed in the fall of 2012. “I believe that the EA work can proceed concurrently with the Greenbelt Master Plan review that is presently underway, rather than sequentially,” said Hubley. MPs Gordon O’Connor and Pierre Poilievre and MPPs Norm Sterling and Lisa McLeod have written letters to the NCC in support of the EA study.

“Traffic congestion in Kanata South is an ongoing issue for many residents,” said Hubley. “We need to move forward to identify the traffic corridors that will meet the needs of constituents in Kanata South. “People in Bridlewood have waited long enough for action on this file.” The Kourier-Standard is waiting for the NCC to comment on the Hope Side Road EA request.

Other changes include cutbacks to east-end routes due to declining ridership. Routes 101, 102, 105 and 118 will have reduced service. The Rack & Roll program, which makes bike racks available on some bus routes, will be expanded to include Route 94. Other routes included in the Rack & Roll network are 12, 85, 95, 96, 97, 99, 101, 106 and 118. Racks are sometimes available on other routes as well; there are more than 350 rack-equipped buses. Use the travel planner at www.octranspo. com to check which routes will have racks. These changes are all part of the regular service adjustments OC Transpo makes every season, but more substantial changes were set to be announced earlier this week (after the Kourier-Standard’s press deadline). On Wednesday, March 23, the city’s transit commission was set to discuss even more changes and cutbacks to bus routes across the city that will likely mean passengers will have to walk further to their stops. Watch www.yourottawaregion. com and next week’s Kourier-Standard for updates.

Express buses will be making fewer stops in the mornings come April 17, which should speed up commute times.

Big changes are coming to OC Transpo bus routes, and you can have your say. On Wednesday, March 23, the city’s transit commission was set to receive a report outlining a redesign of the transit map (view the report at www.octranspo.com). The changes are aimed at making the transit system more financially sustainable by cutting down on duplication and making routes more direct. (The report was released after this newspaper’s press deadline; watch www.yourottawaregion.com and next week’s edition for more coverage.) The changes will likely mean some riders will have to walk farther to get to their bus stop, OC Transpo boss Alain Mercier told city councillors in February. Right now, 98 per cent of Ottawa residents live within 400 metres, or a five-minute walk, from their stop. The changes could push that to 800 m, or 10 minutes, for many users. The city could also reduce the number of buses running during off-peak hours for certain routes. In all, only 60 of OC Transpo’s routes will remain untouched or could be enhanced. But those 60 routes represent about 90 per cent of transit trips that will remain the same as they are now after the

transit map changes. The final, approved route changes will take effect on Sept. 4, after public consultation and a second round of debate by the transit commission. Residents can weigh in on the proposed changes at a series of public meetings over the next two weeks. The second in a series of public information meetings on West Management of Canada’s controversial Carp Landfill project will be held next week. The first of the three open houses will be held Tuesday, March 29 at the West Carleton Amateur Sports Club (3790 Carp Rd.). There will also be sessions Wednesday, March 30 at the Lions Den at 90 Castlefrank Road in Kanata and Thursday, March 31 at the Stittsville Legion. The meetings will run from 4 to 8 p.m. The sessions are a part of the environmental assessment for the proposal that would expand the landfill commonly called Carp Mountain into a more integrated waste diversion and recycling operation. If approved, the new-look West Carleton Environmental Centre will include landfill, composting and renewable energy aspects and recreational land for community uses. In this second phase of meetings, the public will be able to discuss the proposed project and various options

OPINION

Kanata Kourier-Standard - MARCH 24, 2011

6

Not yet open enough New Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson entered office with a flourish of transparency, boasting that openness at city hall would come “first and foremost” under his leadership. Moves like putting councillors’ expenses online and the expected appointment of an integrity commissioner have established an aura of openness that was missing in the past. But do the day-to-day workings of city hall stack up to the same standard? Even under this new leadership, information is held with a tight fist. City councillors reacted to the tabling of the draft 2011 budget with what can only be described as stupor – so overwhelmed by their first glance at the hundreds of pages of numbers they couldn’t conjure any probing questions for city staff. At the city’s transit commission, city councillors have yet to see a major report hit their desks before they show up for a meeting. Unlike most reports, which are distributed and posted on the city’s website before committee meetings, councillors aren’t permitted to see important transit reports until a staff person starts the presentation.

Councillors don’t even get the reports at the beginning of the meeting. It’s that sort of tight-fistedness that led to a furor last week over the proposed overhaul to the OC Transpo map. Residents have been waiting for the changes with bated breath since they were first alluded to in January, so it was no surprise that people jumped all over a draft of the report posted on an OC Transpo community blog after it was discovered on a section of the OC Transpo website that was supposed to be kept under wraps. But it was surprising that city councillors were also left to refer to the leaked information, which city staff confirmed as real but not final, ahead of this week’s transit commission meeting. The report was set to go to the transit commission on Wednesday, and it details changes to dozens of routes. But without the leak, city councillors wouldn’t have had any context of what the changes would mean to their communities. “I have had some conversations that I should know what is in it for my own ward by now and I don’t, except for what was leaked,” said Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson.

Remember tail fins? Remember baseball?

ostalgia, as they always say, is not what it used to be. In fact, it is becoming bigger. We used to think of nostalgia as having to do with big cars with tail fins, the Cold War and dance bands on Saturday night. Now, as our society changes at a rapid clip, more and more things we used to think of as the latest thing are heading for nostalgia land. The printed book, perhaps. Maybe the daily newspaper, at least on paper. Look what is already there: television sets that are too heavy to carry, VCRs, CDs and – suddenly – video stores. Remember the chain video store on the corner? Look again. Your grandchildren won’t remember them. And here’s a question: will they have any memory of baseball? Various events bring this thought on. The days are suddenly long and with that comes an urge to play outside after supper. Mind you, this being Ottawa, playing outside would mean playing in the slush, but still, it could be baseball any day now. At a gathering of a particularly intense group of fans the other night, an audio tape of an old baseball game was playing. Remember audio tape? It was a Montreal Expos game played KANATA

CHARLES GORDON Funny Town in the early autumn of 1986, the last game with Duke Snider in the broadcast booth. Snider, a great outfielder and a great broadcaster, died late last month. You don’t have to be ridiculously old to remember when the voices of Snider and Dave Van Horne, calling the Expos games on Ottawa’s country music station, were the sound of summer. Snider went away in 1986. The Expos went away in the season of 2005. Only country music radio seems to have thrived. You can’t say the same for baseball, especially in this country. The Expos are gone. The Blue Jays have not been drawing anything like the crowds they did in the last millennium. What used to be known as the Lynx Stadium has no Lynx in it. Baseball there fights for survival while the parking lot

shrinks. In our neighbourhood, the park across the street, which used to be busy with Little League ball every night, now has soccer (and a terrifying array of minivans parked beside it). It is true that huge salaries are still made by baseball players south of the border and huge profits are made by owners and broadcasters and the people who resell tickets on the Internet. But the ordinary person has lost the ability to identify with millionaires and billionaires, particularly when the behaviour of many of them has been less than exemplary. Their pictures are not taped onto kids’ bedroom walls. Worse than the lack of adulation is the lack of emulation. Kids still want to be Sidney Crosby. Do they want to be Roy Halliday? The game won’t survive if people don’t play it. Even in the U.S., there are signs that young athletes are turning to basketball or football, rather than baseball. Here it is hockey, of course, and, increasingly, soccer, and, even more increasingly, stuff kids play while sitting in front of a computer screen. It is not fun to consider baseball as something we used to do, like square dancing or renting videos. The game,

while considered too slow by some and not violent enough by others, has many qualities that other games lack. Unlike hockey, it has no clutch-and-grab, no headshots. Unlike football, coaches do not send in the plays. Oddly, athletes and fans in other countries are finding this out, while baseball edges into nostalgia in North America. In Asia and Latin America, particularly, baseball is hot. Here, we miss the Expos and we miss what used to be the enthusiasm for the Blue Jays. We miss seeing kids in the park across the way learning how to field ground balls. The nostalgia grows as the days get longer.

Blazers deserve a star To the editor, The word “sportsmanship” in Webster’s dictionary includes the words fairness,

ANNA OSTAPYK

To the editor, Last Saturday I had the misfortune of losing my wallet (in the Farm Boy parking lot, as it turns out). Needless to say, I was getting a little panicked as I started thinking about replacing all of my credit cards, debit cards, health cards, etc. Compounding my anxiety was the fact that I was leaving on Sunday for a week-long business trip – now having no easy means of paying for the hotel, meals, travel, etc. for myself and my employees who would be travelling with me. Do I begin cancelling my cards now? How quickly can I get things replaced? What’s involved in getting a new health card? It was all a little too stressful for a night where I was supposed to be enjoying a nice evening as we were hosting dinner with our extended family. I was thinking that the odds of someone actually returning it were something akin to the Sens making the playoffs this year. But then the phone rang. Ten minutes later, Louis and his young daughter showed up at our front doorstep. He did more than return my wallet – he reaffirmed my faith in the people of our great little community. It was also a great lesson for me on how much of a difference one simple act of kindness can have on someone’s life. Thank you again Louis – for everything. Shaun Belding Kanata

respect for one’s opponent and graciousness in winning or losing. On Saturday afternoon, I found a few more words that should be added to that list: the Kanata Blazers hockey team. I was at a game at the Bell Sensplex between the Kanata Blazers Minor Peewee AA hockey team and the Capital City Condors – a team of children and young people with physical or learning disabilities. The sportsmanship I saw in that game brought tears to my eyes and to the eyes of many other family members and friends in the crowd. I saw Blazers players taking dives, being checked and ending up flat on the ice. I saw failed attempts to get the puck and many failed attempts to score. I saw players from the opposing teams actually talking to each other and in one case, a Blazers player being given advice on where to stand and how to hold his hockey stick by a Condors player. That Blazers player actually did what he was instructed to do. There were a lot of proud parents at that game, but none should be prouder than the Blazers’ parents and coaches. You have raised a fine group of young sons and hockey players. This game was organized so well; from the singing of the National Anthem and the introduction of the players, to the hockey stick arch made for the Condors to leave the ice at the end of the game. This was a wonderful day for a group of young people to experience something that they had only been able to watch others do. The final score was 24-2 for the Condors. Usually, I think the majority of ‘Stars’ come from the winning team; in this game, all the players from both teams were winners – but I think the first ‘Star’ honour should go to the Kanata Blazers. Thank you, Blazers, for your friendship and sportsmanship. Good luck to you with the rest of your hockey season. Betty Ling Friend of the Condors

A local grandmothers group is hosting a Disney’s The Lion King fundraising gala at the National Arts Centre on July 14 to help African grannies raising children orphaned by AIDS. The event, being hosted by the Kilimanjaro Grannies, includes dinner, seats to the very first performance of the stage production in Ottawa and a chance to meet the cast and crew after the show. All funds will benefit the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign, which seeks to raise awareness and mobilize support in Canada for African grandmothers. “The African theme jumped out at us initially,” said Barbara Carriere, a member of the Kilimanjaro Grannies. “It’s almost the tail end to our story; we began with the dream of climbing Kilimanjaro.” In October 2007, a group of six women (Giséle Lalonde Mansfield of Dunrobin, Liza Badham of Fitzroy Harbour, Tina Courier of Arnprior, Barbara Carriere from Kanata, Nepean s Trudy Stephen and Janet Carriere of Ottawa) realized their dream of climbing Africa’s tallest mountain. 456937

Since then they have written a book, Kilimanjaro: A Purposeful Journey, to help raise money and awareness about the struggle of African grandmothers raising grandchildren orphaned by the AIDS epidemic. Carriere said the group’s goal for The Lion King gala is to raise $50,000, adding if people want to attend the event and donate to the cause, they have to purchase their tickets by April 8. “After April 8 then they will just be general tickets to The Lion King and we will not benefit,” Carriere said. She said it’s been difficult promoting the event because it’s so far away, but the group is hoping for a large turnout. “This is going to be huge, an exciting event,” said Carriere. “We are hoping to have a keynote speaker at the dinner, and of course this is the first time that The Lion King is coming to Ottawa.” Funds raised help pay for education fees, uniforms, books and other necessities for African children attending school. Due to the AIDS epidemic, it’s been estimated that between 40 to 60 per cent of the 13 million AIDS orphans live with their grandmothers. “We would be thrilled to have the community come out and support a wonderful cause,” said Carriere. “In Africa they live on $1 a day; for $350 or so a child could have…all things necessary to go to school for an entire year. That’s not a lot by our standards.” Other fundraising efforts include a “tree of life” students in the All Saints Catholic High School arts program are building to be displayed in the NAC lobby. “It will be bare when the show opens but we hope people will be willing to purchase a leaf for $5 and help our tree get in full bloom,” said Carriere, who

Tickets for the Kilimanjaro Grannies Lion King fundraiser must be bought by April 8 in order to benefit the Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign. added the grandmothers’ book will also be on sale in the lobby. The Kilimanjaro Grannies are also hosting a children’s matinee show on Aug. 4. Carriere said Broadway Across Canada will donate $2 per ticket sold to the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. “To be able to have children come out for the matinee – we fundraise for the grandmothers in Africa who are taking care of the orphans, whether their grandchildren or orphans in the village – the connection has a lot of meaning,” said Carriere, who has experienced the play before and added it’s well-worth seeing. “This time, I think it’s going to be extra special because I have a special place in my heart for Africa, so my heart will be singing along.” For more information on the gala event, visit the website at www.kiligrannies.com/gala or for the children’s matinee, visit www.kiligrannies.com/ campaign/matinee.

Plans are in motion that could see a lifesize bronze statue of a soldier installed in Carp before this November. Stuart Hodge said it’s a shame the village doesn’t have a proper memorial for locals killed in the First and Second World Wars. Most towns and villages in Europe do, but to have a crumbled concrete monument beneath the snow is worse than having nothing at all. “There are so many things wrong with that. Many people don’t understand how wrong that is,” said Hodge, a retired Royal Air Force member who grew up in Wales. “I have a strong understanding of what it means for someone to stand up and do something for their country.” He managed to get crucial stakeholders on board, including a village business group, West Carleton Coun. Eli El-Chantiry, Roly Armitage and more. He is also hoping Huntley Centennial School students, like his son in Grade 1, can help out in some way when the time comes. “I want them to say in 10 or 20 years that

they helped build it.” A Kanata architect, Malcolm Wildeboer, has already donated his time and talents. Karson’s has offered excavation equipment. Others have already filled out cheques. But it’s also a race against the clock. In order to raise $111,111 before Nov. 11, 2011, fundraising had to begin now. The sculptor needs four months and three other people to help with the statue, which will be located in the 280- by 80-foot triangle in front of The Swan at Carp. The location is ideal, at the bottom of Falldown Lane, Hodge said, since it is the spot of a former communal well that many of the village’s fallen would likely have visited in their youth. The bronze soldier will be reading or writing a letter, he said, something that stuck out in the memory of veterans. It will also include the 20 names of people who died in the First World War and 16 names of those who died in the Second World War on a granite base. While Hodge says the cenotaph is to honour all veterans, including those who served in the Korean and Afghanistan wars, none from Carp died in those conflicts. He also doubts the Legion in Constance Bay will be offended by a second cenotaph in West Carleton, indicating there can never be too many monuments to the fallen. Anyone interested in learning more can log onto carpbia.ca or call Hodge at Koallo, a web hosting company on Craig Side Road: 613-369-5046, ext. 250.

There were no losers in the hockey game between the Kanata Blazers and the Capital City Condors. The Kanata Blazers Minor Peewee AA team hosted the Condors in a friendly game of hockey at the Bell Sensplex on Saturday, March 19. It was one of the first games the Condors have played against another hockey team since its inception three years ago, said Shana Perkins, general manager of the Condors. The Condors are made up of youths with physical and intellectual disabilities, from age six upwards, who are ineligible to play on other teams. Family and friends of both teams filled the stands and cheered as the announcer called every player’s name as he or she skated onto the ice. The Condors quickly took the lead with a 6-0 score in the first period. There was a smile on every face on the Condors’ bench as players went through their on-ice rota-

tions. Sticks were smacked against the boards and raised high in the air by both teams every time the Condors scored a goal; fist bumps and words of congratulations were exchanged. The Blazers managed to score two goals in the second period but the Condors wouldn’t let up. In the end, the Condors won 24-2. The Blazers created a hockey stick arch for the Condors to skate through on their way off the ice. The game also raised a number of food donations for the Kanata Food Cupboard instead of charging an admission. The Condors will be heading to Marlboro, Massachusetts at the end of April for the Special Hockey International Tournament. The Condors began with only a handful of players when the team was created three years ago, said Perkins. Now, the team has grown to 40 players with many more on a waiting list. She said they hope to be able to expand to include two hockey teams in the near future.

The two teams battle for control of the puck.

There were smiles all around after the game wrapped up when both teams posed for a group photo.

Tories nomination battle looms At roughly 1,000 supporters each, the March 31 final battle between Norm Sterling and Jack MacLaren is proving to be as exciting as any provincial election. The two have campaigned for several months to the right to represent the Progressive Conservative party in the riding of Carleton-Mississippi Mills. Sterling, a centrist, is the elder statesman with 33 years experience in provincial politics. MacLaren, on the right side of the party, is a former president of the Ontario Landowners’ Association and a farmer and engineer living in MacLaren’s Landing. The campaign has been feisty, with some calling exposure of internal party politics a sign of a “robust democracy and others calling it a fight that threatens to split the party to its core. Sterling countered the charge he is a career politician by talking up his days as a lawyer. Some said Sterling doesn’t do enough to solve constituents’ issues; he insisted he has “helped a lot of people. MacLaren answered every challenge to his libertarian values with assertions that today’s governments lack the moderate, middle-way they once held. Some said his preoccupation with rural property rights issues puts him out of touch with suburban voters in Kanata and Stittsville, to which he responded

On Feb. 10, MacLaren sent out a campaign email that routed through the MPP’s constituency website to his own. If the commissioner establishes that MacLaren’s email account is paid for through Hillier’s constituency funds, an “improper use of tax dollars meant for non-partisan purposes would be leveled. Hillier calls the “frivolous controversy a technical error by a website operator, and isn’t worried over the outcome. “This is politics. It’s just another partisan shot by the Liberals, Hillier said. “It’s a technical error by a third party. He also denied supporting MacLaren, saying he never gets involved in nominations. However, that’s not the way Sterling sees it, linking the two as closely as possible. “They are either sloppy or doing something wrong, he said, then refusing to comment further. Observers say the internal bickering could open the door for the Liberal candidate to steal the Tory stronghold in the fall election. But when Ottawa-West Nepean Liberal MPP Bob Chiarelli was asked on repeated occasions to address the campaign and provide an update as to whom might represent his party in the election, he was unavailable for comment. The nomination meeting at Scotiabank Place on March 31, is open to riding members of the Progressive Conservative party. With files from Geoff Davies.

with “property rights affects urban landowners as well. Sterling said MacLaren is on the wrong side of major local issues such as the Carp Landfill expansion (which Sterling opposes) and the Nortel pension fiasco. He said MacLaren has little interest in other issues such as providing more classroom spaces in Kanata. MacLaren, for his part, said Sterling can’t possibly stay fresh and offer new ideas after three decades in office. He promised to serve no more than “two or three terms and will dedicate his time to reducing the size of government. He maintained the way for the PCs to lose the coming election is to fight the McGuinty Liberals for the centre. The campaign spilled into local and national newspapers when MacLaren attempted to displace the long-time riding executive with his own people, a move many saw as too aggressive. It failed. Then came the now-infamous letter to a Toronto newspaper from Conservative MP Scott Reid, accusing Sterling of neglecting his constituents. Reid, MPP Randy Hillier and MacLaren are further to the right on many issues than Sterling. The latter two have been accused of doing more than showing support for one another. Liberal backbencher Rick Johnson sent a letter to Ontario’s integrity commissioner accusing Hillier of “abusing taxpayer dollars by using his website and legislative resources to help MacLaren win the nomination.

Quilting community helps woman with MS JESSICA CUNHA jessica.cunha@metroland.com

A Kanata-based quilting company is hosting a fundraising dinner to help an Almonte woman with multiple sclerosis. Sherry Read was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the age of 23. Within six years, Read lost the ability to move on her own and was in a wheelchair. Now 38, Read underwent an experimental procedure called chronic cerebro-spinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) in California last December, where the veins are opened to allow for better blood flow. The treatment, which is not available in Canada for MS patients, is believed to help by opening up veins that have been partially or completely blocked, allowing the blood to flow properly through the body. Because Read was unable to get follow-up care in Canada, she only had part of the procedure completed and is heading back to Albany, NY this year. “While we were there they were successful in opening her left jugular vein, which was 88 per cent blocked,” said Read’s mother, Joan. Only a portion of the lower right vein could be opened. The higher portion of the right jugu-

lar was 100 per cent blocked. The family saw improvements in Sherry almost immediately, said Joan, who added it can take anywhere from three to six months to see the full range of progress. Before being wheeled in to surgery, Sherry said the letter on the exit sign were blurry and her speech was slurred. “When they wheeled her (out of) surgery she said, ‘Mom, as soon as they open that vein I could see every letter as clear as a whistle,’” said Joan. “(Her) speech had improved and her voice was stronger. She said ‘Mom, feel my hands.’ Sherry had been icy cold, there was no circulation. I’m telling you, you would swear she was hot flashing. She would feel that surge of blood. Those were some of the big things.” Sherry, who used to be a figure skater, baseball player and played basketball at South Carleton High School in Richmond, lost about 20 pounds since her diagnosis because she had great difficulty chewing and swallowing. “Because Sherry’s condition was getting worse and worse that’s why we went to California, she was almost paraplegic,” said Joan. “Right now she weighs around 110 lbs. Had we not taken

A Kanata quilting company is hosting a fundraiser for Sherry Read on April 2. her there she would probably be in bed with a feeding tube because that’s the only way we would have kept her alive.” Since her treatment, her severe leg and neck spasms have been reduced and she has better control of her muscles, said Joan. Sherry, who graduated from Carleton University with a degree in psychology and from Algonquin College as a dental hygienist, was only able to work about two and a half years before having to go on disability, said

her mother. The cost of medication, a new wheelchair, body support rests, physiotherapy, massage treatments and the CCSVI procedure have taken their toll on the family financially. “The expenses are unbelievable,” said Joan. “But any improvement in quality of life for MS patients is worth every penny.” Although the family can claim some of the cost, very little is covered. MS patients are entitled to a new wheelchair every five years, but Sherry needed a new one with back and neck support before the time limit was up so the family had to cover half the cost, on top of a new wheelchair accessible van. After learning that The Running Stitch, along with Bravo Quilt Studio, was going to be hosting a fundraiser in Sherry’s honour, Joan said the family is “just overwhelmed.” “Every penny helps,” said Joan. “They’re just amazing here for helping people out.” Joan met Jody Taylor, who works at The Running Stitch, about four years ago at a quilt guild meeting; both women are long-arm quilters. “I hadn’t seen Jody in about

three years when the phone rang out of the blue,” said Joan. Taylor’s mother also has MS and recently went to Poland for the CCSVI treatment. “I saw how expensive it was and I saw the struggle,” said Taylor. “She’s a person with MS and she had to travel across the world to get treatment.” A fundraiser was held for Taylor’s mom where $10,000 was raised to help pay for the trip. “She (Taylor) wants to give back so she said she’d like to do a fundraiser if Sherry’s willing,” said Joan. “All the proceeds are being donated to the family,” said Taylor. “Their cost of going to California was upwards of $12,000 US.” Taylor said she felt the need to help the Read family financially. “The quilting community is a really small community, everybody knows everybody,” said Taylor. “We both have an ill relative in common.” The event is going to be hosted at St. Paul’s Church, located at 20 Young Road on April 2, starting at 7 p.m. Tickets for the spaghetti dinner and auction are $25 and available at The Running Stitch, which is also accepting donations from people who can’t make the event, said Taylor.

Friends and family are rallying around a 28-year-old Kanata man who became paralyzed last winter after suffering a rare and debilitating spinal injury. Ian Cope lost all movement and feeling below the waist, and has no medical coverage to help cover his mounting expenses. Just after Christmas, Cope was walking to a local store when he felt a sharp pain in his back. The ache soon became excruciating, said Jason Dorken, a friend of Cope’s since Grade 5, and he was rushed to the hospital. Doctors diagnosed Cope with an acute spinal subdural hematoma – a blood clot on his spine – and emergency surgery was performed. However, the young man hasn’t regained feeling or movement below the waist, said Dorken, who added the doctors don’t think he ever will. “It was completely random, a one in a million shot,” he said about the injury, which can happen for no apparent reason. Cope, who started his own DJ company, Summit Entertainment at the age of 18, has no medical

Faced with months of rehabilitation, equipment such as a wheelchair, stair lift for his parents’ house and other items, Cope has to pay out-of-pocket for the expenses, said Dorken.

His friends and family are hosting the Raising Funds to Raise Spirits event on Saturday, March 26 at Don Cherry’s, located at 320 Eagleson Rd. Tickets are $5 in advance and $10 at the door. With carnival-style games, a silent auction and raffle draw, Dorken said they hope to raise at least $5,000. “One hundred per cent of the proceeds are going to be donated to the cause,” said Dorken. “We’re just trying to raise awareness about the situation.” A PayPal account has been set up on the website supporting Cope’s cause and Dorken said he is in the process of starting a trust fund. Cope, who is completing rehabilitation at the Ottawa Hospital general campus, is doing ok despite the circumstances, said Dorken. Musical fundraiser for Japan The month of March marks the third year anniversary since Yoga & Tea Studio first began offering yoga in the village of Carp and served their first cup of complimentary Yogi Tea – a blend of chai spices and black tea. They are celebrating their anniversary and recent “Health & Wellness Business of the Year” People’s Choice Award from the Kanata Chamber of Commerce by offering door prizes in each class during the week of March 20-26. Each day a five-class pass will be given away, as well as t-shirts, teas and are offering a 15 per cent spring sale on class passes until March 31. To end the anniversary week of celebrations, they will be hosting a free musical event called “kirtan” with local Ottawa musicians Bhakti Connection. Kirtan is a traditional Indian call and response style of singing with traditional Indian instruments such as tablas and harmonium. This kirtan night of music and sacred song will be a fundraiser for Red Cross efforts in Japan, to aid survivors and to help rebuild the devastated country. “We come together in song to find peace, to give hope, to express faith and our prayers for grace and strength when faced with challenges” said Nina Sidhu,

owner of the studio. “We change one another’s vibration, uplift and carry eachother through the power of our intentions, our voices, our words. It is a wonderful opportunity for our community to experience the healing of power of yoga music and see just how empowering it can be.” The kirtan night is free admission by donation to the fundraiser. It takes place at 7 p.m. this Saturday, March 26 and reservations are required as space is limited. Kirtan reservations and details about the week-long anniversary celebrations can be made by calling 613-304-6320 or by going online to www.yogaandtea.com.

Hot Tots hosting kids’ consignment community sale HOT TOTS Hot Tots is hosting its sixth semi-annual community event on April 2. Hot Tots is a large children’s consignment sale event and gives parents the opportunity to recycle their children’s outgrown clothing, toys, books, equipment and more, without

placing limits on the number of items they can sell. It also provides families in the community with the ability to meet their children’s growing needs at a fraction of the cost when compared to retail stores. Not to mention it is great for the environment. We try to give back to the

No assault charges were laid following a Cornwall police investigation after Colts forward Michael Borkowski hit Stallions goaltender Scott Shackell, pictured, which resulted in a concussion for the netminder. Borkowski was suspended for two games by the CCHL.

Waste Management of Canada Corporation Environmental Assessment for a New Landfill Footprint at the West Carleton Environmental Centre OPEN HOUSE #2 Waste Management of Canada Corporation (WM) are undertaking an Environmental Assessment (EA) seeking approval for a new landfill footprint at the existing Ottawa Waste Management Facility (Ottawa WMF). The new landfill footprint will be one component of the proposed West Carleton Environmental Centre (WCEC). The proposed WCEC will be an integrated waste management facility that will include: • A new landfill footprint for disposal of residual waste materials; • Waste diversion and recycling operations; • Composting Operations; • Renewable energy facilities; and, • Recreational lands for community uses.

File photo

Cornwall case cleared Colts player handed two-game suspension, no assault charges

The new landfill footprint is the only component of the WCEC that requires EA approval under the Environmental Assessment Act (EAA). The proposed location of the WCEC and the new landfill footprint component is within the City of Ottawa in the area shown on the map below. The purpose of the EA is to study the potential environmental effects (positive or negative) of the proposed new landfill footprint. Key components of an EA include consultation with government agencies and the public; consideration and evaluation of alternatives; and, the management of potential environmental effects. Conducting an EA promotes good environmental planning before decisions are made about a proposal.

DANIEL NUGENT-BOWMAN daniel.bowman@metroland.com

Consultation WM recently held a series of Public Open House events as well as a Workshop to discuss the EA for the proposed landfill footprint and other ancillary facilities to be located at the WCEC. As part of the next phase of the EA, WM will be hosting a series of Open Houses scheduled for the week of March 29th - 31st, 2011. No assault charges will be laid following a Cornwall police investigation stemming from a hit in Game 3 of a Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) series between the Kanata Stallions and Cornwall Colts. The hit by Colts forward Michael Borkowski on Stallions goaltender Scott Shackell did, however, result in a two-game suspension by the league. Borkowski collided with Shackell in the opening minute of the March 13 game, knocking his helmet off and forcing his head to hit the ice. Shackell left the game with a concussion and the Stallions lost 7-1. A parent of a Stallions’ player then filed a complaint with the Cornwall police. “Police have interviewed relevant witnesses in this case and also have conducted an extensive review of original digital video as well as consulted with the Crown Attorney’s office,” read a Cornwall police press release. “It was determined that the collision and resulting injury did not fall within criminal standards as per the provisions under the Criminal Code of Canada.” Borkowski was given a major penalty and game misconduct for charging on the hit and sat out Game 4 on March 15 as the investigation began. Cornwall won the game 4-3 in overtime, giving them a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Cornwall wrapped up the series win with a 5-1 victory in Game 5 on March 17. Shackell was sidelined for the remainder of the series. Bruce Baskin, CCHL vice-president of hockey operations, travelled back-andforth between Cornwall and Kanata trying to watch various video feeds of the hit. He said he had to wait to view the Cornwall high-definition video of the hit until the police were finished with it. The Cornwall police were given video footage of the entire game. A final decision on the suspension was finalized early on March 17 but Baskin believes, upon talking to Borkowski, that the Colts forward’s hit was not malicious. “Borkowski did not attempt to injure

Shackell,” he said. “It was an unfortunate collision.” Baskin, who has worked for the league for five years, added that parents are within their right to get the police involved in on-ice incidents. But given that the incident was a “bang-bang play” and provided “inconclusive” evidence, he is surprised it went this far. “I’ve been involved in situations in the past where parents have taken that step,” Baskin said. “It’s a very unorthodox step in my opinion. Normally these types of decisions are looked after by the individual league.” In addition to the Borkowski-Shackell collision, Game 3 saw a host of incidents the league had to review. Stallions forward Nick Samoluk was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for charging, however he was not suspended for Game 4. Teammate Ryan Bradley received an automatic one-game ban after being called for a “travesty of the game” misconduct when he gave Colts fans a one-fingered salute. Colts defenceman Matthew Zanardo was given a four-minute penalty for spearing Stallions forward Brandon Bussey, plus a match penalty for attempting to injure Bussey after cross-checking him in the back of the head while he was on the ice. Zanardo was suspended indefinitely following the game. He was issued a sevengame ban. “While no injury occurred, the predatory nature and the video and referee report showed there was intent and the potential for serious injury existed,” read a press release from the league. Baskin thought the Zanardo incident was the worst of the lot. “I’m definitely not disagreeing with you,” he said prior to rendering a decision when asked if he though the Zanardo incident was worse than the Borkowski one. “When my final assessment is done, I think it’ll reflect that.” League president Kevin Abrams agreed with his colleague’s assessment of the two incidents. He added that the Zanardo play was an “atypical” act for CCHL play. “It’s something in our league we have no patience for,” he said. “My suspicion is that was a terribly played game. Hopefully we’re now beyond that for good.” The CCHL semifinal matchups are now set. The Pembroke Lumber Kings will play the Gloucester Rangers and the Cornwall Colts face-off against the Brockville Braves.

Check your smoke alarm VOLLEY SHOTS

CITY OF OTTAWA Did you know that working smoke alarms can cut your chances of dying in a fire by 50 per cent? In Ontario, having working smoke alarms is not only a good idea -- it’s the law. Ottawa Fire Services recommends you install a smoke alarm on every level of your home, and outside your sleeping areas. Test your smoke alarms every month and change the batteries twice a year when you change your clocks. A working smoke alarm and a home fire escape plan will significantly increase your chances of surviving a fire.

Beyond the tap: A look at the city’s drinking water JENNIFER MCINTOSH jennifer.mcintosh@metroland.com

Most of us don’t think about how the water in our tap gets there every day, but according to Tammy Rose, manager of drinking water services for the city, every household gets an average of one cubic metre of water pumped to their home daily. The cost for that averages out to about $1.27 versus the nearly $2 it costs for half a litre of bottled water. The Britannia Water Purification plant draws from the Ottawa River, which is a large watershed — measuring 146, 300 square kilometres — or bigger than the surface area of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island combined. Rose described the water source as pristine, with virtually no outside pollutants. “A lot of the tea colour comes from organic decay,” she said. “And there are microbials.” Rose said the city uses the five elements of a safe water drinking system developed out of a report on the E. coli contamination in Walkerton, Ont. in 2000. The first step starts with the source water, or the Ottawa River and keeping it as clean as possible. The second step is treatment barriers. “The key is to have many parts to the treatment so even if one part fails, the other ones are still in operation,” Rose said. During this stage the river water is treated with sulphuric acid and alum — a compound used in Roman times to treat water. Then flocculation happens, where the particles come out of suspension in the form of floc or flakes and the particles are removed. Then fine particles are removed through filtration. Next the water is disinfected with sodium hydrochloride and then chlorinated with carbon dioxide, ammonia and fluoride. Finally, chloramine, a combination of chlorine and ammonia, is now added to the water before it travels through the distribution system. Chloramine is an effective and long-lasting disinfecting agent that is safe for drinking, cooking and bathing. Once water is treated, it is sent into the transmission system, then to water storage and finally consumed. “The chloramine helps to preserve the water and keep it clean as it travels through the system,” Jim Guthmann, the Britannia plant manager, said. “Sometimes the water can travel from treatment to a home in minutes, but in some cases it takes up to 10 days to go to areas like Manotick.” The third step in the multiple-barrier process is the distribution system. The city maintains 2,850 km of water main and more than 206,000 services — including valving, hydrants, leak detection and cathodic protection — all of which are 100 per cent monitored. Rose said that the whole system is pressurized; meaning that in the case of the January break of Woodroffe Avenue’s water main, the system shoots water out, rather than taking in possibly contaminated ground water. “It’s virtually impossible for ground

water to get into the system,” she said. As part of the fourth step, the city performs 100,000 water quality tests per year, with 300 test parameters — including physical, microbiological, chemical and aesthetic — and all the data is reported to the public annually. The fifth step is to have properly certified personnel. The requirement, which became part of the recommendation, once the inquiry into the Walkerton incident found that Stan Koebel, plant manager did not have sufficient training. The incident killed seven people from E. coli contamination and made 2,500 people ill. At Britannia the city employs 170 treatment and distribution operators who receive 40 to 50 hours of training per year. The Britannia plant treats about 289 megalitres of water per day. The Lemieux Island plant does about 400 megalitres per day. Despite the media attention over sewage overflow, the water in Ottawa’s drinking water was rated as one of the safest in the world in the Ministry of Environment’s chief drinking water inspector’s 2006-07 annual report, released in June 2008. “We have the fourth cleanest drinking water in the world,” Rose said. Travelling the marble hallways of the Britannia plant, it could be mistaken for a museum rather than a water treatment plant. But, just down the hall is a series of settling tanks where the water sits once the filtration process is started. The temperature is a cool 10 degrees Celsius and a staff member says that in this

early stage sometimes fish can still be found in the water. The water is moved around in steel and concrete tubs to be filtered and mixed with alum. The water is then sent to “settling tanks” where the floc settles and moves to the bottom to have the particles removed and sent to waste management. Once the water is filtered and settled, it continues along the system to be chlorinated and finally out into the system. The blackout in 2003 or major ice storms haven’t been able to stop the plant’s operations, which are backed up by a large natural gas generator and several diesel ones. Some of the challenges for the facility include aging infrastructure and an aging workforce — along with the challenges of climate change which could change the pathogens in the water. But, all in all, the Britannia plant runs like a finely-tuned machine, with constant surveillance and a smaller scale test plant to try out new treatment possibilities. “It’s a really great thing to have,” Dixon Weir, manager of drinking water services said. “We can test out things like Ozone on a dinky scale. In that case we found it didn’t offer an advantage and were able to avoid a multimillion dollar test.” Weir said the city is in good shape and extends services to the Township of Russell. Council approved the extension of the City of Ottawa’s drinking water supply to Russell in 2006. The existing Township municipal residential drinking water system serves Embrun, Rus-

sell and Marionville. Weir said that extended to the provision of drinking water supply about a year ago. “They found that having us (City of Ottawa) taking care of their drinking water to be a better investment,” he said. “So obviously we are doing a good job.”

Three Valley musicians were in the national limelight during Canadian Music Week. The aesthetics, a band made up of Paul Gillespie from Kanata, Andrew Bryant from Carp and Fraser Holmes from Renfrew, were one of the 12 regional finalists for the $10,000 prize at the recent 18th annual Canadian Radio Star National Songwriting competition.

Christian girls hold fundraiser for summer camp BLAIR EDWARDS blair.edwards@metroland.com

A Christian girls group is holding a fundraiser for its summer camp at the Kanata Legion, located on 70 Hines Road, on April 16. Canadian Girls in Training hope to raise between $5,000 to $10,000 from the event, which runs from 7 to 10 p.m. and costs $5 per person or $10 for a family of four. The fundraiser offers a family dance, a face painter, games and a silent auction. Camp Kalalla, a girls Christian summer camp, is located in the Gatineau Hills and offers three weeks of programming for girls ages 7 to 15, including swimming, kayaking, crafts, archery, arts and bible study. “I honestly think it helps the girls develop a firm foundation and develop a moral compass,” said Brenda Hamilton, a co-ordinator of the Camp Kalalla Beach Party fundraiser. The money raised will support the programs offered at the camp, said Hamilton. Canadian Girls in Training (Kanata) is a youth group comprised of 12 girls who meet every Wednesday night at Kanata United Church. Cash donations for the camp can be made by calling 613-831-7281 or by email: singersoloist@sympatico.ca

The event was one of many Canadian Music Week Conference activities which ran from March 7 to 11. The other finalists, from across the country, included the song Holmes wrote with Jordan Rutledge, Sweat You Out. Holmes, 23, now lives in Ottawa where he’s focusing on a music career as guitarist and lead vocalist for the aesthetics, which formed last fall. Gillespie is on drums and vocals, and Bryant on bass and vocals as they focus on a wide variety of pop music. It was a busy week for the trio, with trips back and forth to the national and provincial capital. They did an acoustic set on the Thursday at Toronto’s Global Village Backpackers hostel, one of 50 locations for Canadian Music Week. The band was back in Ottawa Friday night to open at Electric Six, at Mavericks in the Byward Market. They were then back in Toronto for the Saturday morning announcement of the national songwriting contest and to play Saturday night at The Hideout. The winner was Heather Longstaffe of Winnipeg with her song Waste of Gas. “We’re getting a little bit busier and booking more shows,” said Holmes. “Certainly our music is getting exposed

The band is also pushing its name out there by distributing three-song CDs that features Sweat You Out and two other song selections, often Feeling

This Way and All But Your Pride. They also produce and record their music at the drummer’s home studio. As a regional winner, the band has already picked up a guitar, studio gear and other equipment as prizes. The band’s recent shows have earned them opening slots for such Canadian groups as Bleeker Ridge, Michou and Jimmy Swift Band. Kanata man on stage for Opening Night LAKESIDE PLAYERS Lakeside Players is celebrating its 21st anniversary as a grassroots, community theatre group by performing Opening Night, written by one of the best playwrights in Canadian comedy theatre, Norm Foster. Local actors are sure to have patrons

doubled over in laughter. The antics begin as Jack and Ruth Tisdale celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary with an evening of theatre. It’s a dream come true for Ruth and an imposition for Jack, who would rather be home watching the World Series. However, after the events both on and off the stage that frightful night, their lives

are irreparably altered. Kanata resident Bill Horsman, who plays Jack Tisdale, said he’s pleased to be returning to the stage with Lakeside Players, where he last appeared in a cameo role for The Big Leap. Over the years he has appeared in a number of plays for Lakeside Players, including The Butler Did It, California Suite and Cinderella (the panto). More recently, Horsman has appeared in a number of roles for Kanata Theatre, including as Baptista Minola in The Taming of the Shrew and Bill Hogan in Having a Wonderful Time, Wish You Were Here. Horsman also sings bass with the Orpheus Choral Group and enjoys playing guitar. Opening Night will be performed at the Ron Kolbus Centre, located at Carling and Pinecrest, from April 28 to May 1.

On Saturday, guests can come for dinner and a show, catered by the famous Grenfell Catering. For more information, visit www. lakesideplayers.com.

Canadian filmmakers as good as Americans: producer Ottawa cinematographer looking to make film a hit EDDIE RWEMA eddie.rwema@metroland.com

After wrapping up a frigid winter film shoot in the area, an Ottawa-based producer is optimistic his latest film will show that Canadian filmmakers can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with their more popular American counterparts. The film, called Eddie, is a satirical dark-comedy about a once-famous painter who finds new inspiration after he befriends a sleepwalking cannibal. Produced by Michael Dobbin, Eddie was shot here in February and it is currently in its postproduction phase. “The footage looks great, the performances were very fantastic, and the cinematography is stellar. It’s going to be a very good film,” said Dobbin He was full of praise for the crews here in Ottawa for braving freezing cold temperatures during the four-week shoot that ended March 4. “It was a tough shoot. Filming in winter is difficult but we got there in the end and we are really happy with the results,” Dobbin said. “They were particularly good at dealing with the cold weather and the timeframes that we had. “We were only able to do it because they were able to run the marathon with us.” Dobbin, who runs Quite Revolution Pictures Inc., said Ottawa worked very well for the story, which is set in a fictional Ottawa-area town called Koda Lake. “Ottawa is a great city. The quality of life is amazing and people here don’t seem to know it,” he said. “It is a very film friendly city, people are very supportive of the film here and it is a very good stepping stone to the world.” Dobbin, who grew up in the Glebe and currently resides in Old Ottawa South, thinks Eddie will challenge those that still don’t value Canadian made films. “Canadian distributors are not really paying attention because their business is not to distribute Canadian film; their business is to distribute

American films,” he said. He thinks its high time Canadians started taking a closer look at what the industry is selling them. “Why is a small town in Ottawa any less interesting than a small town in the U.S.?” Dobbin said. “It is an issue that needs to be addressed in order for our films to be successful.” Recently, he said, there has been increased volume of work coming in to the Ottawa region. His business model has been to co-produce films internationally because then he can rely on the foreign market if the domestic one lets him down. “It sounds like a backwards way of doing it, but it is the only way at the moment.” He hopes to see Eddie premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this September. There will be an Ottawa premiere for the cast and crew, likely at the end of the summer. Dobbin’s past work as a producer includes director Toni Harman’s debut horror film The Devil’s Curse, a film by Capital Ward Coun. David Chernushenko called Powerful: Energy for Everyone as well as Endre Hules’ The Maiden Danced to Death.

JESSICA CUNHA jessica.cunha@metroland.com

A Kanata resident has been nominated for a Y Women of Distinction Award in the notfor-profit and public service category. Jane Fjeld, associate executive director with the Youth Services Bureau (YSB), was nominated by Cherry Murray for her continuous work with youth and young adults in the field of mental health and addictions. “I’m very flattered that she would want to do something like that on my behalf; humbled by the women who have gone before me,” said Fjeld. Murray called Fjeld selfless, passionate and dedicated in her nomination submission. “Jane’s dedication to young people coping with mental health and addiction issues has benefited countless over the past 30 years,” said Murray. “In addition to working directly with

them, Jane excels at developing programs and initiatives that bring the maximum long-term benefits possible.” The National Capital Region YMCA-YWCA Y Women of Distinction Awards, now in its 16th year, honour and recognize women who contribute to the health and future of the community through activities and achievements. “(Fjeld) is a stellar representation of the Y values,” said Murray. Fjeld has been involved with the YSB for the past three years. Prior to that, she worked with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, where she helped develop projects surrounding youth, mental health and addictions. “We put together different intervention strategies that were sent across the province,” said Fjeld. Before that, Fjeld worked as the executive director for Young Offender Services where she concentrated on developing programming. Fjeld also held a position with the Elizabeth Fry Society’s Ottawa chapter, which provides service to girls and women in the justice system.

Youth worker Jane Fjeld has been nominated for her work with youth and young adults. Fjeld said she has always been interested in helping youth ever since she worked on her masters’ degree in criminology. Her thesis looked at the Young Offenders Act. “I think it’s been an interest of mine since way, way, way, way back,” she said. “Something I

never lost was being committed to the needs of young people and their families and the communities that try to support them.” She said her dedication to youth stems from her belief that if young people can get help early in their lives, they have a better chance of having the adult

life they deserve. “It’s a very hopeful area to be involved in. Typically folks that are involved in youth and youth programming share that belief that young people can and do change,” she said. “It’s an energizing group to hang out with.” She said she gets to see successes every day in her job. “Any time a youth makes him- or herself vulnerable or open to whatever change someone is offering them is a success. Over 30 years I’ve seen amazing, what would be classic success of young people that have gone from being so marginalized or street involved… to having a life that includes all the things they want in it. “We need to pay attention to the smaller successes too... It doesn’t always need to be as grand as that to be a success. Showing up to appointments, being engaged with a service worker – those are successes.” The awards ceremony is set to take place May 31 at the National Arts Centre. “It’s a humbling kind of experience to be nominated,” said Fjeld. “There are a lot of great women who have come forward in the nominations.”

Potholes popping up across the city LAURA MUELLER laura.mueller@metroland.com

“Ker-chunk!” It’s a sound that Ottawa drivers loathe. While warm temperatures are something to look forward to in the spring, they also bring the arrival of potholes – the tire rims’ nemesis. It is well known that “freeze-and-thaw cycles” lead to potholes, but what does that actually mean? Potholes are more likely to happen when it’s warm, said Jason Staniforth, who oversees the crews that repair the city’s potholes. But cold temperatures are also needed to create the perfect conditions for a pothole. The process of creating a pothole starts when water begins to creep under the pavement. Heavy rainfall (or any precipitation) kicks off the process. As temperatures heat up and the sun beats down on the pavement, melting snow and ice can make roads even more water-logged. The cycle continues from there, Staniforth said. “When it freezes overnight, it pushes the asphalt up,” he said. “When it melts again, it pushes the asphalt back up and vehicular traffic tends to break it up, cre-

ating a pothole.” Potholes can be created when water builds up between layers of asphalt, or between the asphalt and the ground itself. It’s hard to tell whether there are more potholes than last year, but heavier rain so far in 2011 is likely putting more strain on the city’s streets. “I can’t speak to whether there are more or less this year, but last year there was less precipitation,” Staniforth said. That meant crews had more opportunities to get out and patch up the roads last year. The work needs to be done when conditions are dry in order for the patch material to bond to the road, Staniforth said. However, if a pothole is bad enough city crews will still patch it up if the road is wet. Even if the patch isn’t permanent, it can prevent the pothole from becoming bigger. The city uses two methods to tackle potholes. Traditionally, roads were repaired using a cold-patch method. Cold-patch asphalt doesn’t need to be heated before it is shoveled into the pothole and stamped down. In the past couple of years, the city has also started using hot patch as-

phalt to repair potholes. The mix of liquid asphalt, sand and different sized gravel needs to be kept hot to flow, and hardens to a more durable surface as it cools. The city keeps the material warm with 14 hot boxes that crews tote around the city. “If the pothole is dry, it’s a more permanent fix than cold mix,” Staniforth said. Crews are out with the hot boxes “whenever possible” during pothole season, Staniforth said, which basically means anytime it isn’t raining or snowing. What makes a road more likely to become riddled with potholes? As the city’s roads reach the end of their lifecycles, they are more likely to crack under the pressure of weather changes, Staniforth said. “We find that some of those we have to return to more frequently than others,” he said. Roads that have a high volume of traffic tend to get more potholes. So far this year, the city has received 929 calls from residents about potholes, Staniforth said. Last year, there were a total of 541 calls regarding potholes to the city’s 311 line. That was down from 981 the year before, but there wasn’t much precipitation in 2010, so that created fewer pothole-headaches for the city.

“If people see something that is a problem, a call to 311 notifies us that it’s there and we can attend and get the pothole filled,” Staniforth said. “When crews are out, they don’t just fill potholes that are identified through 311, they fill whatever they see.” That’s why the city doesn’t track the actual number of potholes each spring – it’s too difficult to pin down.

POTHOLE TIPS Follow these tips to help reduce the wear and tear on your car due to potholes: • Pay attention to tire pressure – it will help protect your vehicle’s wheels and tires from being damaged from pothole impacts. • Don’t swerve to avoid potholes. Swerving can cause the front wheel and tire on the car to hit the edge of the pothole at an angle, which might do more damage than hitting it straight on. • Don’t brake just because you see a pothole: heavy braking compresses the front suspension of the car and could force the tire and wheel down into the pothole, instead of gliding over. Early on a winter evening, Pastor Terry Orchard cradles his Bible and heads down to a small, run-down motel in Britannia. He knocks on a wood door that’s worn and chipped. A man from Haiti answers, wearing a big cross around his neck. The man opens the door just a crack. A bed, that his children likely share is visible behind him. Orchard asks the man if he needs any food. The man hesitates for a minute, and shakes his head “no.” A small hand suddenly emerges from the man’s side and gently grasps his white shorts that have stains and tiny rips. A boy, as young six or seven years old, peeks out behind the protection of his father - curious to see who’s at the door. Later, Orchard learns that the family did need food for that night – the man just had too much pride to ask for help. The Britannia Baptist Church pastor lives down the street from this motel, which houses refugee families while they patiently wait for subsidized housing. While the families wait, they also receive help from the church led by Orchard in an initiative called Mission to Moms – a new organization that helps make life a little easier for them. “We want to be proactive in helping these families,” said Orchard. “People often say that these families have benefits and social assistance – but it’s not enough. You can only stretch what you

Pastor Terry Orchard has been leading Mission to Moms – an organization that helps refugee mothers and families transitioning into subsidized housing and life in Canada. have so far.” That’s why Mission to Moms has a mandate to collect food, clothing, toys, furniture – even offer moving services – to refugee families in Ottawa’s west end who are in transition to subsidized housing. Other churches have also started helping with the cause as Mission to Moms waits to receive charitable status. Orchard said Mission to Moms started out of the Britannia Baptist Church be-

rival to motels up to their move into subsidized housing. Kanata resident Martha Lavictoire is Mission to Mom’s program co-ordinator and she often helps these families make the move into new homes. She also helps set them up with furniture since many don’t have any when they first move. “I have two little kids and I’m married, and it’s still hard,” said Lavictoire. “I couldn’t imagine what it is like for these refugee moms. They don’t even speak English. My heart goes out to them.” Orchard hopes Mission to Moms will eventually expand to cover the entire city, since there are so many other motels and shelters in Ottawa that are housing refugee families. He added that whether these families are part of a church or not, he wants to help them. Orchard said he wants to raise awareness of what refugee families go through in Ottawa and that people will gain a better understanding of the issue. “Often within any community, you have two bubbles of population – those who are well off and those who are struggling through no fault of their own,” Orchard said. “People have stereotypes of what it’s like to live in that lifestyle, but I think it is so quick to judge based upon lack of experience.” For more information on Mission to Moms or how to help out, visit the Britannia Baptist Church website at www. britanniabaptistchurch.com

The woman, who didn’t want her name used, is currently living in a single room with her three children as she waits for subsidized housing. She has about five months left until she can move into her new home. Mission to Moms has been vital to her and her children’s survival, she said, adding that she usually receives about $600 a month from her social assistance checks. “It means a lot for sure,” the single mother said of Mission to Moms. “I don’t have enough money to buy toys for my children or food. It helps so much.” Orchard said many of these families flee places like Haiti, Rwanda and Sudan because of the poor economies, but also because of political oppression. Many of the women have husbands who have abandoned them and are even separated from some of their children who might still be in their home country. The refugee children who are here in Canada often run risks of getting involved in gangs, said Orchard, and the Britannia Baptist Church has a choir specifically for these children to help keep them busy and give them a sense of purpose. Where have all our good books gone? MICHELLE NASH michelle.nash@metroland.com

The recent release of an iPhone application now offers instant knowledge of books at your local Ottawa Public Library. Technology has taken libraries by storm and speaking to a Rockcliffe Park crowd, the head of the Ottawa Public Library spoke about the future of books and that eBooks are indeed here to stay. At the Rockcliffe Park speakers program on Feb. 23, Barbara Clubb spoke to the full house about the future of libraries and explained the structure of eBooks and audiobooks which are now widely offered in the library database. Clubb, a ten year veteran with the Ottawa Public Library said the library is prepared for the changes. “I believe if people are reading eBooks we will find a way to provide for them,” Clubb said.

The new mobile library catalogue app for iPhone lets people interact with the library where ever they are. It offers users the ability to see if a book is checked in, which library they can retrieve it with built in GPS, they can renew a book and they can manage their accounts. The Toronto based company; BiblioCommons developed the app with funding from the Edmonton Public Library. The Ottawa Public Library jumped on board to offer their patrons the new mobile extension to their services. “It is a great way to interact with the library,” Jennifer Stirling, manager of digital services said. Prepared for digital interest, the library has appointed staff like Stirling for digital services to handle the requests and calls for eBooks. New books are added weekly to the online catalogue. The library has had eBooks since 2008, but the library digi-

tal service has noticed a large influx of calls, tweets and emails about the new eBooks offered. They believe it is because of the mass amount of eBook readers given as gifts this year for Christmas. “It seems like everyone ended up with an eReader and we are trying hard to give them the technical and digital support they need,” Clubb said. A service which offers users the freedom of no library fines has a definite appeal with users added Clubb. Stirling brought five eReaders; IPad, Kindle, Sony eReader, Kobo and the Aluratech eBook reader to the event for interested individuals to look at. Ross Murray came to the Speakers Program because as a self-professed techie, he wanted to see how the library is planning on integrating the eBooks into their catalogue. He was happy with the news of how many books will be offered and how quickly new books will

be added but still finds fault with the eReaders and the current, bumpy system the library offers for taking out eBooks. “We hope to make the service as easy to use as something like Amazon,” Clubb said, admitting that at the moment the service could be more functional. Compatibility and preference are two main issues the library is currently tackling. The Kindle does not work with anything but Amazon, where as the other four eReaders work with certain eBooks offered at the library. “With books, you can just stick them all on a shelf, but with eBooks, they all may not be compatible with the eReaders,” Clubb explained. The advice was for interested eReader shoppers was to do their research and make sure the reader they purchase does what they want and need it to do. “People like their devices and they like having everything on one device – and so far, we haven’t seen the best eReader to accomplish that task,” Murray said. Security, price and the time it takes to download the eBooks were all questions Rockcliffe residents raised at the event. “It takes about a minute to download an eBook,” Stirling said. As for the concerns to security – Overdrive, the library’s service provider is as secure as online banking Stirling assured. Current prices of the five The library has allotted $70, 000 for eBooks this year, which still only amounts for 1.4 per cent of the total of book purchasing they plan on doing. At the moment, they plan on focusing on popular fiction books, such as the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo as they have noticed a large amount of requests for such a book. Clubb herself owns a Sony eReader, but still loves the feel of a real book in her hand. “We are dealing with constant change... these things are happening all around us and we need to be prepared,” Clubb said. The face of the library is indeed changing, Clubb noted. But libraries are still being built, renovated and remain a place people flock to. “If books are only becoming digital, someone isn’t getting the message because they keep on building,” she said. Although, circulation of materials is only a third of what the Ottawa libraries are being used for these days. Libraries have become more than just a place you can lend books. They are the hub for the community; a place where people meet, where kids play and where conferences can be held. And eBooks still only represent a small number compared to the print available in the library. “There is a long way to go before they make the same numbers as print,” Clubb said.

Laura Gagné is a member of a Toastmasters group and speaks to various Ottawa groups. She joined about six years ago when her fear of public speaking began to have an affect on her goal of becoming a professor. “I had to control my fear of speaking,” said Gagné, who is now an area governor for toastmasters. Gagné and Braden said they both agree that the first speech, called the icebreaker, is the hardest. Gagné said people should try out different clubs until they find one that fits. “Some clubs are very shirt and tie,” said Braden. “Our club is a nice mix of friendly but we interrupt each other (to give feedback).” “The best thing you can do is go out there and do it,” said Gagné. Braden added he believes Toastmasters clubs are not only for working adults. “When you get out of university, one of the best things you can do is go out and join a club and practise,” he said. The West End Toastmasters meet every Wednesday night from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. Those interested in learning more or joining can check out the Toastmasters website, at www.westendtoastmasters.org, and are invited to come to the open house on Wednesday, March 30 at 6:30 pm.

The West End Toastmasters are hosting an open house with special guest Harry Kingston at the Kanata Seniors Centre on March 30. Kingston will be speaking about how the Toastmasters can be a great benefit in all areas of a person’s life. The goal of Toastmasters, an international organization with more then 235,000 members worldwide, is to improve personal communication and public speaking skills. Brenda Richardson joined the group last November because she wanted to improve her presentation skills for work. “It’s great,” said Richardson. “I find it fun, interesting and a lot more challenging.” Rob Braden, president of the West End Toastmasters, has been a member for about 15 years and said he believes that only through practise do people improve their communications skills. “It’s hard to tell someone to come to toastmasters,” said Braden, because some people don’t realize the value they can get from attending the meetings. “When you come, you are focusing on the delivery (of a speech),” said Braden, who added it’s important to be succinct and know how to frame an answer.

DAVONNE FOSTER Three years ago my husband and I started a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) food box program as a means of extending our family farm business. But that wasn’t the only reason we wanted to do it. The more we researched different CSA programs, the more excited we became about it. Over the past few years, there has been a media push for participating in the 100 mile diet. Eating food grown within 100 miles of where you live. But why? Long before fast food restaurants became popular and eating on the go was a part of our everyday life, people depended on fresh-grown food. In fact, every home had a garden that fed its occupants. So what exactly is a CSA program and why do we encourage people in our city to participate in one? The term CSA consists of a community of individuals who pledge support to a farm operation so that the farmland becomes the community’s farm, with the growers and consumers providing mutual support and sharing the risks and benefits

ery week CSA members receive fruits and veggies that have been picked that morning. They’re picked when they’re freshest and most nutritious. Imported produce are often picked while they’re unripe, ripened during

transportation with gas and then sometimes stored before they’re put out for sale. Not the freshest you can get. You also keep family farms running and reduce your carbon footprint. Ottawa has more

farmland that any other major city in Canada. If that’s the case, we should be the healthiest city in Canada eating the most fruits and veggies. But we’re not. We’re the fifth healthiest city, with Victoria and Montreal eating way more veggies than we do. With all this great farmland in our backyard we should be taking advantage of it. The more family farms we have operating in Canada, the less food we need to import and in doing so we reduce our carbon footprint. Another benefit of participating in a CSA program is that you get to know how your food was produced and also how to store and prepare your food. Farmers take pride in the foods they grow and want you to enjoy them too. So they are more than happy to share their knowledge with you. So whether your goal this year is to eat more veggies or to just eat better, we encourage you to join our CSA food box program. You’ll enjoy 14 weeks of the freshest vegetables you have ever eaten. For more information contact us at csa@ fosterfamilyfarm.ca or check out our website at www. fosterfamilyfarm.ca. You’ll be glad you did.
