A large number of people living in Kanata North will be affected by the proposed bus changes for the area. Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson addressed the issue at her ward council meeting on Monday, March 28 in advance of OC Transpo’s public meeting scheduled to take place on Wednesday, March 30, after the Kourier-Standard’s deadline. Wilkinson said a number of areas in her ward are losing their service due to route cutbacks and removal of bus stops. “A lot of people will be walking more than 800 metres,” she said. “They are making them (bus stops) very long distances away. “There’s going to be a lot of people with worse service than they have now,” she said. The biggest losers would be the people who currently rely on Route 65, which is proposed to be removed entirely. People who live on the side streets off Knudson Drive between Campeau Drive and Westlock Way, and those who live off Leacock, Varley and Penfield drives would have a fairly lengthy walk to catch either the 60 or the 68. “I think it’s too far for people to walk,” said Wilkinson, who added she is trying to work out a deal with OC Transpo to see the 65 be put back into service with a few changes. “That is the major service for Beaverbrook.” BUS CUTS, see 5

Bus changes coming to Kanata South JESSICA CUNHA jessica.cunha@metroland.com
Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley discussed the proposed bus changes for Kanata South at his first ward council meeting on Thursday, March 24. Hubley met with six advisors chosen
from the community to discuss the changes to OC Transpo service in Ward 23 in advance of the public meeting scheduled to take place on Wednesday, March 30, after the Kourier-Standard’s deadline. “The route changes, there’s a couple changes there already,” said Hubley. “I’ve gone back to OC Transpo and said, ‘This
11 Critical Home Inspection Traps to be Aware of Weeks Before Listing Your Home for Sale Kanata - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away
altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre-inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help homesellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. doesn’t work for me.’ We have been able to make a few modifications already that are going to make it a lot easier for people.” He said although some people will have to walk a little further to reach the bus stop, the majority of changes will help to make people’s lives easier. Instead of having empty buses running down side streets, Hubley said they’ll run down the larger and more populated collector streets. “They’re taking the buses out of the side streets and putting them on the collectors,” he said. “Yes people will have to come out of the side streets to the collectors but the frequency is going to increase.” He said so far there have been no changes made to bus routes in Bridlewood, but the Glen Cairn and Katimavik areas will both see adjustments. “Bridlewood for example, there’s no
route changes. The bus you take today is the bus you’ll take tomorrow,” said Hubley. “Glen Cairn and Katimavik are affected by the route changes (merging three routes into one). About 400 people will be impacted by this and they’ll now have to walk further. But we haven’t found any examples where it’s anymore than 10 minutes to a bus stop. For most, it’s only a couple of minutes extra.” Hubley said he looked at seniors’ residences in the area to ensure buses still pulled up in front. He added modifications can be made as long as it doesn’t include adding routes back into the plan. “If we can modify it, I’m there. I’ll be doing everything I can.” CHANGES, see 3
Many bus routes are expected to change as of September 4th. File photo

The main area Hubley said he is looking at and hoping to get public input on is what to do about the night-time and weekend schedule changes. He said he wants the buses’ late runs defined by the residents. “We have a couple proposals already,” said Hubley. “I need to hear from the residents what time they want those runs at.” He said he’s also looking at the possibility of adding walkways to create shortcuts to bus stops to help shave time off for those who would have to walk further with the new implementations. “We can tweak it that way,” he said. The optimization route proposals are estimated to produce an annual savings of $19.5 million starting in 2012, and when combined with additional changes, OC Transpo said it is expecting $22 million in savings a year. WARD COUNCIL Hubley selected a number of
residents to sit on his ward council to help advise about issues and concerns in the areas of Kanata South. Instead of holding a monthly open ward council meeting, Hubley will meet with his advisors on a quarterly basis unless the need arises for additional meetings. He said he would be releasing the list of his advisors names in the coming weeks. “These will be the people that represent their neighbourhoods and have ties in their community. They will come in and give me their perspectives,” said Hubley. “I didn’t see the point in doing a monthly town hall meeting when there are so many other meetings going on at the same time.” He said it’s easier to deal with issues during concentrated meetings, such as the planned OC Transpo open house, instead of having another monthly meeting where many issues are covered. “People have very busy lives, they don’t need me to try and fill their schedules for them,” said Hubley, who added he would probably hold one or two town hall meetings a year.
Residents with concerns, comments or issues can get in touch with Hubley via his website, email, phone and Facebook page. “There will still be that opportunity where people can bring up issues,” he said. “There’s lots of open communication with residents.” He added he will not post the minutes of his ward council meetings with his advisors. “At this point I don’t see a need for that because all it is, is a brainstorming session.” The councillor added that residents can expect to see him on their doorsteps during the spring months. “I found people appreciated the one-on-one time,” he said. “Obviously I can’t canvass the whole ward this spring but I fully intend, as soon as the sidewalks are cleared, to be out knocking on doors.”

On March 23, OC Transpo revealed a hefty list of changes to the transit map that are aimed at saving the city $22 million by next year while still maintaining close to the current level of service. While the city says around 93 per cent of trips (that’s about 11,000 rides) won’t change, it might mean you need to walk farther or transfer buses. There are also changes to service levels proposed, which means some routes may only operate at peak hours, occasionally with one late-evening run. Kanata and Stittsville will see some of the most

The city is looking at killing routes 65 and 165. That surprised Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson, who said she knew the 165 was on the chopping block, but not the 65. “They had said that they weren’t really going to touch the express routes, then all of a sudden, bang-go they are. I didn’t mind them being consolidated, but actually cancelling (Express Route 165), I was surprised,” Wilkinson said. A city report says people who use routes 65 and 165 could use routes 60, 68, 93 or 168, instead, but it would mean longer walks for about 250 people. It would also likely mean an extra transfer for 50 people who currently take the 165 to Kanata North each day. Kanata would also lose service on Leacock and Penfield and the section of Knudson between Campeau and Beaverbrook. The 168 would be rerouted to run from Terry Fox Station along Kanata Avenue, Goldridge, Stikine, Kanata Avenue, Knudson, Beaverbrook, Varley, Beaverbrook, Teron, and Campeau,
making a stop at Eagleson Station and continue along Eagleson, Katimavik, and Kanata Avenue back to Terry Fox Station. Buses would run in both directions around this two-way loop. The section of Route 168 to Kanata North would be combined with the new Route 93. The city wants to extend Route 68 to Keyrock, which would make the walk to the bus stop shorter for about 35 people each day. Savings in this area would amount to $110,000 each year. Wilkinson said she is also working with staff to alter the Express route system. “I have an idea… about keeping the 65 but changing it through so it picks up some of the overcrowding on the rest of the (Express) routes,” Wilkinson said. KANATA NORTH The city is proposing to combine a slew of routes into one new route through Kanata North. The new route, 93, would connect Kanata North to Bayshore at all times of the week. It would also have a direct connection to the downtown at peak hours. In the future, when the city creates a park-and-ride lot in Kanata North, Route 93 could run directly to downtown at peak hours. Buses would operate from Bayshore Station along Highway 417 to Teron Station, then along Teron, March, Solandt, Leggett, and March to Klondike.
Buses would turn around on Flamborough and Terry Fox before doubling back over the same route to Bayshore Station. When the new recreation centre is built by 2012, Route 93 could be extended to turn around there. In the morning peak period, trips would start at LeBreton Station and run along the Transitway to Bayshore Station, continuing into Kanata North. In the afternoon, trips would start in Kanata North and operate via Eagleson Station and Bayshore Station and on the Transitway to LeBreton Station. The new Route 93 would replace Route 160, the section of Route 101 west of Bayshore Station, the section of Route 182 from downtown, and the section of Route 182 into Kanata North. Because of these changes, approximately 300 people would have to walk farther each day, including 50 people who would have to walk more than 800 metres to get to a bus stop. About 250 people who currently use Route 101 west of Bayshore each day would have an extra transfer. Wilkinson said she would like to work with city staff to modify some of the routes, such as the 93, which she says could better serve people who currently take the routes it would replace. “They’re leaving people too, too far away,” she said. OC TRANSPO, see 9 Route 169 would no longer serve the section south of Eagleson Station and 453570

Kanata North could see significant reductions BUS CUTS, from 1 She said OC Transpo has agreed to sit down and go over her proposals for the area but in order to keep certain services others will have to be cut to keep costs at the same level. “They’ve already promised me to make some changes but the 65 is going to be a tough sell,” she said. SIGNIFICANT REDUCTIONS Wilkinson said the reduced service hours in the evenings and at night will
affect the young people who work late shifts or have night classes. If there are only one or two late-night bus runs, young people could be stuck without a way home. She said Kanata North could experience significant reductions with only a few improvements to add service to newly developed areas. “In some places they’re increasing the services, which costs more,” said Wilkinson. OC Transpo has to balance the costs of improved services against the projected $19.5 million in cuts, which raises the amount of reductions.

The addition of the 93, a major arterial route, would connect Kanata North to Bayshore Station at all times during the week, with a downtown connection during peak periods. The route is currently proposed to start at LeBreton Station, but Wilkinson said she wants to see it operate from Lincoln Fields. As well, the 93 doesn’t go to the Centrum but only the Eagleson park-and-ride. Wilkinson said she wants to get the new route to service the Centrum to help relieve congestion at Eagleson Station. The National Capital Commission won’t allow an expansion of the Eagleson park-and-ride, said the councillor, but there is still parking space available at the Terry Fox Station. She added she’s also looking at getting a parking lot to service Kanata North. OC Transpo has estimated a savings of $110,000 from reductions in Beaverbrook and Kanata Lakes, while a projected savings of $515,000 is expected to come from cuts in Briarbrook, Morgan’s Grant and Brookside. The approximate savings from both Kanata and Stittsville amounts to $2.45 million.

Every election is a privilege
T
he 41st general election is upon us following a historic vote of non-confidence in the House of Commons last Friday that found the government in contempt of Parliament. Amid the finger-pointing by rival politicians who want to lay blame for who exactly triggered the election and groans from voters over whether a fourth trip to the polls in seven years is even necessary at all, we should stop to remember how lucky we are to be living in Canada. Over the past few months, while our leaders have been feuding over who was responsible for writing the word “not” on a government memo and whether members of the House have the right to view cabinet documents on the cost of significant military and justice programs, on the other side of the world millions can only look on in envy that Canadians will be able to decide for themselves whether these things are important to us. For the sea of people who gathered in Cairo’s Tahrir Square to the rebels fighting across Libya to the thousands of protesters marching in the streets of Iran, Syria, Yemen and Bahrain, we are the lucky ones.
On the first Monday in May, every Canadian voter will be able to exercise, through a small mark on their ballot, a right that remains only a dream to the people struggling for democracy in these countries. While most Canadians will never know the hardships faced by people in places like Libya, it does the people there an incredible disservice to treat an election with contempt. Far from being contemptible, elections provide citizens of democracies with their most meaningful opportunity to influence the course of government, at least until the next election. In contrast, the people of Egypt have waited decades to even win that right, let alone exercise it. While the issues at hand in this election may be tiring to the ears of the average Canadian, this is our opportunity to decide for ourselves whether the government was in contempt, whether new fighter jets are worth their multi-billion-dollar price tag or whether the impact of an aging population on our health care system is being adequately addressed. Here in Canada, we should feel lucky to be able do something others will live a lifetime without experiencing.

Politics boring? Not here
W
here Ottawans always stand out is when the pollster asks if they would like an election, if one hasn’t been called, or if they are interested in the election, if one has. This is like asking people at a hockey game if they are interested in the hockey game. People elsewhere might profess a lack of interest, but politics is Ottawa’s major sport. Hockey might sometimes be considered a rival, but certainly not this year. Why would you not want another game? While people in less enlightened parts of the country bemoan politicking, condemn partisanship and generally dismiss the political struggles as ritual, we who live in the shadow of the Peace Tower have quite a different view. Politics gives shape to our community, meaning to our lives. – as politicians, as strategists, as volunteers, as political reporters – and we know that they are real people too. Even the reporters. They go to the church or the pub, they belong to the book club, they have kids who play hockey, they mow their lawns and shovel their snow. So even if we don’t vote the way they do, we can suffer along with them, or take some pleasure from their triumphs.
KANATA
CHARLES GORDON Funny Town To us, politics is not some exotic activity that other people do, like polo or winetasting. It is central to our life. And central to our jobs as well. We don’t have to work in the party backrooms for political events to shape our lives. The public service changes significantly after elections. The change is not so great as in the U.S., where more top jobs are filled in and after elections. But top jobs do change here and the occupants make their appointments and before you know it, you’ve got a new position, maybe a better one, maybe not. And your neighbour, who works for a company that supplies widgets to a government department, is all of a sudden selling less widgets or more, depending on the political decisions somebody made somewhere up the line.

The neighbour on the other side, who works for a non-government organization, is delighted or depressed by something the new folks have done. Even if jobs don’t change, priorities do. More will be spent, or less. The environment is a priority, or not. Foreign aid goes up, or doesn’t. With every decision, somebody’s job description changes. You know that, and even if you haven’t experienced it yourself, you’ve heard the muttering from your relatives, or the people next door. The government doesn’t have to change for any of this to happen. Ministers change and new ministers have new ideas, or no ideas at all. Even if a government wins re-election, it learns things from the campaign. Uh-oh, the government discovers, the people want more of this and less of that. Better make it happen. In the attempt to make it happen, the woman around the corner suddenly becomes more important at work. Or the family suddenly has to sell the second car. All of this means that politics is a spectator sport all year ’round in our town. People have to keep an eye on what’s going on. Even the most routine exchange of rants in Question Period is going to

People are biting their fingernails. Sometimes they would bite other people, if the law allowed it. We should never let anyone tell us that it’s not interesting. It is more than interesting. Kanata residents voiced resistance about adding more houses to a community already suffering from major traffic congestion during a meeting to discuss a subdivision development that would see up to 1,500 new homes built. More and more chairs had to be wheeled into the hall on Monday, March 28 to accommodate the large community presence that assembled at the Kanata Recreation Complex. The South Kanata Development Corporation (SKDC) is proposing a subdivision near Bridlewood called Hope Lands that would cover 30 hectares of land at Richmond and Hope Side Road, and would include four community parks. But residents said Richmond Road and Stonehaven Drive are already a “parking lot” on most days and more homes would only add to the issue. Kanata South councillor Allen Hubley called the traffic issue “one of our highest priorities,” and discussed plans for an environmental assessment study to be done in 2014 to find the best solution to the problem. The study was first proposed in 2008. One possibility to be assessed is the expansion of Richmond Road to three or four lanes to accommodate more cars. Another option, the extension of Hope Side Road to intersect with Highway 416, would cut into the Stony Swamp marshlands conserved by the National Capital Commission (NCC). Discussion around the Hope Side Road expansion has been ongoing for 20 years, Hubley said. One resident argued that extending Hope Side Road is not a feasible solution to the problem because of the environmental landmark. “You can hear the community getting upset about cutting down trees, and you guys are talking about annihilating hundreds of years of swamp land,” he said.
“You’re not going to get permission to do that.” Discussion swirled around many issues, including pedestrian safety and parking, but always came back to traffic congestion. Recent traffic studies have shown that 90 per cent of traffic in the area is heading north. Tim Newton, a project manager for Hope Lands, assured the attendees that the development’s final plan would reflect these studies. “Until the city is satisfied with the traffic study, this won’t go forward,” he said. Another concern was how neighbourhood schools would accommodate children from the new subdivision. One young local student asked how the developers were going to deal with his already overpopulated school, and was met with a round of applause. Protest also arose from changes to the original plan, which proposed only 1,000 new homes. This number was bumped up to between 1,400 and 1,500 homes at the meeting’s discussion, consisting of both single-detached and townhouse units. Miguel Tremblay, an urban planner hired by SKDC, explained that changes like these are natural to an ongoing project. “The plan has been changing, and will continue to change as a function of this evening,” he said. Construction will not begin until after a zoning bylaw has been altered and approval for the subdivision has been granted by the city. From there, detailed designs and blueprints must be drawn up. It could take years before construction begins, and before it does, residents can file an appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board protesting the development. When the construction timeline was discussed at the meeting, residents were quick to shout out, “Don’t forget the appeals.” Any relevant information or updates

Scaled-back Kanata North rec centre project moves forward LAURA MUELLER laura.mueller@metroland.com
Although there was a faint possibility that the National Capital YMCA could have re-instated $6 million in funding last week, the City of Ottawa is moving ahead with plans to pare down the Kanata North recreation centre. The city had been working in partnership with the YMCA for about a year and a half to build an enhanced recreation facility. Kanata North Coun. Marianne
Wilkinson said she first heard rumblings that the YMCA might be pulling its funding last fall, but it wasn’t until March 2 when the organization officially announced it couldn’t afford to give the $6 million it committed to. The YMCA’s board of directors met on March 18 to discuss the possibility of re-instating the funding, and the city expected a decision late last week. Wilkinson said she received a phone call from National Capital YMCA acting president Dierdre Speers say-
ing the board of directors needed more time to make the decision, which was expected by midweek (watch www.yourottawaregion. com for updates). “I’d rather they take their time and come up with a good answer, Wilkinson said. The city is still looking at other possibilities, including business sponsorships and granting programs, but with city council set to vote on the scope of the project on April 13, there are only three weeks left to come up with other

Here is a drawing of the old site plan for the rec centre. The city is looking at a possible redesign. funding options. Instead, the city is looking towards Plan B. That means scaling back the facility by about 1,393.5 square metres. Components the community won’t be seeing include the second gymnasium, a running track, enlarged individual and group fitness spaces, family activity zones and a dedicated childminding/playcare space. With the YMCA’s contribution, the total project was set to cost $49.14 million. Scaling it back will make it worth around $43 million, which is mostly coming from development charges the city has been collecting for the project for many years. Redesigning the facility will

cost another $100,000 to $125,000 said Steve Kanellakos, director of city operations. The original $49-million plan in partnership with the YMCA is still usable if the Y could come back on board with funding before council votes and construction begins. Wilkonson said she hopes another funding partner can be found in time, or that the facility could be built in a way that would allow it to be added to in the future if more funding was found or another partner came on board at a later date. For instance, in order to apply for a grant under the federal government’s private-public partnership program, the city would have to spend about nine months and $400,000 to get the application ready. In addition, with a federal election looming, there is no certainty that specific funding programs will continue. “It’s an additional level of risk, Kanellakos said. Wilkinson said she is still in talks with businesses in hopes of securing some sponsorships. Kanellakos said there is no appetite among councillors to delay the project yet again. As to whether the second gym or other components could be added into the facility later, Kanellakos said the possibility is low. Even if it is built in a “modular fashion that would technically make an addition feasible, it could cost too much, and a new private partner would have to go through the tendering process before that could be done. Council is set to vote on the revised $43-million project on April 13 and construction should start this summer. A public meeting on the redesigned project should take place in early May, Wilkinson said. At the end of May, the city would ask companies to bid on the contract to construct the rec centre. Wilkinson said she would like to see the city ask for bids for both versions of the project (both the $49-million and $43-million plans) in case construction companies can come up with a lower price to include some of the “extra components. The facility is expected to take two years to build and is planned to be open by 2013.

OC Transpo changes Route 169 would no longer serve the section south of Eagleson Station and the section from Kanata North to Bayshore Station. Instead, it would be changed to operate in the morning from Eagleson Station along Teron, March, Herzberg and Leggett to Solandt. Afternoon trips would run in the reverse direction. Route 182 would continue to operate from Lincoln Fields Station through Bayshore Station to the former Nortel location, with some trips continuing to the Defence Research and Development Canada location at Shirley’s Bay. These changes would help save the city $515,000 per year. GLEN CAIRN Routes 63 and 64 would be no more. Those routes would be combined with Route 62, which would operate Rothesay, Glamorgan, Castlefrank, McCurdy, Castlefrank, and Katimavik to Eagleson Station before heading downtown. Those changes would mean a longer walk for about 335 people each day who takes those routes. In exchange, the service would be more frequent, speeding up the trip for approximately 400 riders. Route 167 would be cut and Route 169 would no longer continue south of Eagleson Station. Glen Cairn would also be losing the section of Route 61 on Palomino. Approximately 90 people each day would have to walk farther because of that change. Changes to routes in Glen Cairn are expected to save the city $647,000 annually. PALLADIUM AND HUNTMAR The city is planning ahead to serve a possible park-and-ride lot at Palladium and
Huntmar. Some trips on the 96 would be extended to start at Palladium and Huntmar in the morning peak period (trips would end in the same location in the afternoon). That route would also absorb Route 183, which would no longer exist as its own route. Route 263 would operate along Huntmar instead of Terry Fox and Route 163 would run along Silver Seven instead of Terry Fox and Route.

The Grade 2 student from St. Leonard Catholic Elementary School in Manotick co-wrote Melanie & Tommy Have Two Pet Rats and One Syndrome with his mother, Nathalie Wendling, at the age of six to educate children who were teasing his big sister. “I felt a bit excited and really happy we were going to start selling the book and everyone was going to stop making fun of Melanie,” said Tommy. One student asked why children were making fun of Melanie. “Because she’s a lot different than the other kids at school,” said Tommy. Melanie, 10, has Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS), a rare disorder where there are noticeable differences facial characteristics, which include a short-turned up nose and low set ears. “A syndrome is when you’re a little bit different than someone,” said Tommy in response to a question about what a syndrome is. “You can’t hear well, you can’t see well and you need a lot of help to do those things.” There are only around 100 known cases of CdLS in Canada, said Wendling. AWESOME AUTHOR Tommy began writing short
stories as a kindergarten student, all with a boy, a girl, a villain, a car crash and pet rats that save the day. One day, he came home in tears after children at school had teased Melanie, said Wendling. So she decided to self-publish one of the books to help explain the syndrome and include educational facts about CdLS so parents could teach their children not to make fun of others for being different. “I didn’t think about it, I just tried to publish it is as quickly as possible,” said Wendling. “I think the crucial ages are grades 1 and 2. They teased because they didn’t understand.” The book follows Tommy and Melanie on a road trip where they go on a few adventures, get into mishaps and are saved by their pet rats. Melanie and Tommy said their favourite part and the hardest part about publishing the book was posing for the photographs, which took about eight hours to complete. The book has already sold over 3,000 copies and has been picked up by Costco’s Children’s Miracle Network fundraiser, which takes place during the month of May, said Wendling. She added she’s surprised by the book’s success. “We had planned to do around one presentation a month,” she said. “Now we’re up to at least one a week.” The students at South March enjoyed the presentation, howling with laughter during a short video starring Melanie and Tommy’s pet rats Ninja, Smokey and Cinderella. “I like it when they laugh at the video,” said Tommy. When asked how they man-

Two students compared shoe sizes with Melanie; a 10-yearold girl and a five-year-old boy. Melanie’s feet were the same size as the boy half her age. Even though it can be difficult to sit in front of hundreds of students during the presentation, Melanie said she enjoys
accompanying her brother when he speaks to schools. “I like it, getting to meet kids, laughing,” said Melanie, who has undergone 12 operations in her short life. Tommy said his favourite part of the presentations is teaching kids about Melanie and CdLS. “(The kids) get to learn more about Melanie’s syndrome,” said Tommy, who added the presentation at South March was his sixth event. “It’s really easy, I like public speaking.” Principle Dorothy Baker asked the students to raise their hands if they’d seen a student get made fun of or had ever made fun of someone.
Almost all the hands went up. “What I want you to think about today is that Tommy and Melanie were in the same situation you just described for me today,” said Baker. “You can make this a much better place to be like Tommy did for his sister.” Wendling said they are in the process of writing and publishing a second book, but is not setting a date for the release. “It’s a lot of work,” she said. “I don’t know when this one will come out.” For more information about CdLS, the book or to watch the rat video, visit the website at www.2petrats.com.

HEARING SOLUTIONS CLINIC
CLINIQUE DE SOLUTIONS AUDITIVES 10 YEARS OF HEARING SOLUTIONS! Communication is priceless. With it, we connect with our world on a daily basis. Unfortunately, even the slightest hearing loss can be a significant obstacle resulting in social isolation. Interactions are hindered as speech becomes difficult to understand, loved ones become mumblers, punch lines are missed and repeating becomes a nuisance. Untreated hearing loss can also lead to diminished cognitive abilities. Indeed, untreated hearing loss has a great impact on one’s quality of life. Selecting the right hearing healthcare provider is crucial.
This personalized hearing healthcare approach differs from the larger hearing clinics and hearing chains. Unfortunately, patients there may be shuffled between staff, rushed through consultations and offered a limited choice of hearing aid models. At Hearing Solutions Clinic, the same Audiologist always takes her time to really listen to and understand your concerns. This is followed by the luxury of being able to choose from an unlimited range of the most up-to-date products thereby guaranteeing a hearing solution that is unique to you, your lifestyle and your hearing needs. “It would not be in my patient’s best interest for the clinic to carry only one line of products or even just a few favored manufacturers. It is important to consider all the options across all of the manufacturers because products vary greatly -from a variety of noise reduction systems to different remote options, from rechargeable hearing aids to open ear products and Bluetooth capabilities.’’ explains Rosanne, ‘’Furthermore, hearing aids may not always be the best or only solution. We therefore also carry a wide variety of assistive listening devices.’’ By remaining independent, private, as well as locally owned and operated, Hearing Solutions Clinic has no manufacturer limitations
Left to right are Doctors of Audiology Rosanne McNamee & Maria Perez and very competitive prices. Despite Hearing Solutions Clinic’s ongoing growth, Rosanne protects the special quality of her clinic by hiring professionals that honor her traditional caring views. The Hearing Solutions Clinic team currently consists of two Doctors of Audiology, Rosanne as well as Maria Perez. Both are very diligent at keeping Hearing Solutions Clinic up to date in technology and practice. Consequently, you receive the service of professionals who are not only top in their field, but who pride themselves on offering quality products and the highest standard of care. Dorothy Johnson, the receptionist, completes the team. Her forte is her accommodating and pleasant manner. Like Rosanne and Maria, Dorothy always has your best interest at heart. Together, the members of this team enable Hearing Solutions Clinic to be more efficient than ever without straying from the core values, beliefs and principles that created Hearing Solutions Clinic a decade ago. For unparalleled personalized hearing healthcare, book your consultation with one of our Doctors of Audiology at Hearing Solutions Clinic, conveniently located at 1915 Baseline Rd, suite 202 (across from Home Depot) where parking is free! You are also welcome to come meet our team during one of our upcoming hearing aid demonstration days which will be held Wednesday, April 13th as well as Thursday, April 14th. Either way, you are sure to be impressed.

Rosanne McNamee, Doctor of Audiology, Registered Audiologist, is the owner of Hearing Solutions Clinic. After a year away for a maternity leave, Rosanne is back to celebrate the 10th year of her practice! This 10 year success undoubtedly stems from the fact that Hearing Solutions Clinic offers a kind of hearing healthcare that is lacking elsewhere in Ottawa. At Hearing Solutions Clinic you won’t hear an office jingle, find crowded waiting rooms, be lured by marketing schemes or feel the pressure of sales tactics. Instead, you will find a clinic with old fashion roots where hearing healthcare is the priority, not hearing aid sales. It is large enough to offer amazing service yet small enough to allow for more personal professional relationships. With such a strong focus on patient care, Rosanne strives to offer every patient nothing but the best. ‘’I believe in treating others the way I would want to be treated, so I care for my patients as I would family. I give everyone 100 percent of myself as we work together to reach their hearing goals.’’ explains Rosanne.

Kanata’s Julia Dods will be performing at the fourth annual Kiwanis Idol Red Carpet Concert at Carleton University’s Kailash Mital Theatre on April 3. The 22-year-old singer is planning on covering a range of genres, singing something by rock legends The Beatles, a song by pop-princess Christina Aguilera and one by alternative rock band Paramore. “It’s kind of just a mix of everything; pop, rock, there’s some jazz, country,” said
Dods, who is one of eight Kiwanis Idols performing at the event. It’s the community’s support that really helps get the singers on the stage, said Eldon J. Fox, organizing committee chair for Kiwanis Idol. “It’s to support the local talent,” he said. “We really need the support of the community. It’s an ongoing thing that gets these kids onto a stage and to show off their talents.” He said all the singers are excited as the event draws nearer. “(I’m excited) just to see the expressions Submitted photo

outlet for me,” said Dods, who before trying out for Kiwanis Idol had never before performed in a singing competition. “I’m still not super comfortable performing for people,” said Dods, who’s been practicing at rehearsals every Sunday for the past five months. Her music teacher also gave her some advice to help calm her nerves: eat a banana. “I’ve heard that if you eat bananas it helps calm you down so I’ve been doing that,” said Dods. “It has something in it (that helps calm) so I have those before and I try to imagine that no one’s there. I think if I convince myself that it does help then it’ll help a bit.” She said she’s looking forward to getting the star treatment prior to the big show with a hair stylist and make-up artist. Country CD a flavouring of influences JESSICA CUNHA jessica.cunha@metroland.com
After a year-long process of writing, recording and organizing, a Bridlewood resident is releasing his country CD on Sunday, April 3. Lorne Daley is celebrating the release of a mix of original compositions and cover songs with a wide range of country-inspired sounds at the Westboro Legion. “It’s great, I love it, I’m so proud of it,” said Daley about his CD. “It’s a great accomplishment. I’ve been thinking about it for a long time now. I’ve been working on this really hard since last year. I started working on it last April and this April the 3rd is the big release party and I’m so much looking forward to it. I’m like a little kid.” The CD, titled Country From Where I Stand, is a mix of country sounds, including Bluegrass, Irish, up-tempo modern and the classic country twang. “The genre is country but it has the flavouring of a lot of other influences in there,” said Daley, who added the title of the CD came to him after taking the cover art at the Nepean National Equestrian Park. “I’m standing in the fields behind some trees and fences. It got me thinking; I’m standing in the field, and country, meaning from where I stand, it’s my own feel of country. So that’s why I’m not sticking to the traditional purest concept of classic country. It’s a
flavouring of a variety of things but it’s still the underlying influence.” Daley, leader of the Ottawa country band Ricochet Riders where he sings lead vocals and plays rhythm guitar, said country music has been an influence all his life after growing up in rural Pontiac, QC. “It’s always been an influence. A lot of my family plays music; I’ve been a musician for years. This is actually my third attempt at getting out a CD; I’m very proud of it and excited to release it.” With a mix of cover songs and original works, Daley said one really stands out for him. The track, titled Hoe Your Own Row, is a metaphor for continuing down a hard path and coming out on the other end. “When you’re confronted with a hard road to hoe, and you’re encountering difficulty and struggles with something in life, you don’t give up, you just keep on managing and fighting through and you’ll survive and win,” said Daley. The song speaks to him personally on a deep level. Growing up on farmland, Daley had the tough job of hoeing rows of potatoes. “Being out in the garden hoeing tons of potatoes, no matter how tough the ground might have been you just keep hoeing through,” he said. As a young boy, Daley lost his sight in an industrial accident while working

Bridlewood resident Lorne Daley is releasing his country CD, titled Country From Where I Stand, on April 3. at a tire shop. A truck tire exploded and hit him in the face. “I managed through, I didn’t give up,” he said. “This is the same idea; music is my light. I never quit, I just kept hoeing my own row. ‘Don’t give up, give it all you got,’ is one of the lines in the song. You can survive is the idea.” The album release party will take place at the Westboro Legion, located at 389 Richmond Rd. on Sunday, April 3. The Kanata Beaverbrook Community Association will be hosting a meeting together with the Kanata Lakes Community Association specifically on the issues of dogs in parks and proposed bus route changes on Wednesday, April 6. Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson will introduce city staffer Christine Hartig, who will identify the park areas where dogs must be on leash and where they could run free. Wilkinson will be seeking feedback from Kanata North residents on the issue. This will be the last opportunity for people to express their opinion on the dogs in parks designations. Wilkinson will also present the proposed bus route changes in Kanata North. Among them is the cancellation of express route 65 which services Beaverbrook. Changes are also planned for some of the local routes. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. with a mix and mingle period with light refreshments. The presentation on dogs in the parks is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. with the bus route changes to follow afterwards. ALL SAINTS CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL All Saints Catholic High School students are raising awareness about the right to good-quality water for all with a 12-hour fast for Development and Peace on Friday, April 1. Is bottled water really safer
and cleaner than tap water? Is there no impact on the environment? Why is it that poor people in the global south don’t have access to good-quality water? All Saints is inviting students to reflect on and bring attention to these issues during a 12-hour THINKfast in support of the international development organi-
zation Development and Peace. Development and Peace funds sustainable development projects in Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East and educates Canadians on the realities faced by populations in the global south. Development and Peace would like to see each and every individual make a personal com-
mitment to give up bottled water. “Whenever possible, we should support publicly owned and operated water systems by choosing to use tap water rather than bottled water, said Patti Koeslag, acting chaplaincy leader at All Saints. You can support the All Saints THINKfast by donating at http:// youth.devp.org/THINKFAST.

Drive Safe This Spring Winter is finally in the rearview mirror, and while you may not have to worry about slush and sleet on the roads, the onset of warmer weather doesn’t mean that you can let your guard down when you’re behind the wheel. Drivers need to continually pay attention to road conditions and be aware of vehicles and pedestrians around them. No matter the weather, your full attention is always needed when driving. Below is a list of useful tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe while driving this spring:
Minimize Distractions Focus on the road – keep your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel at all times. Avoid engaging in any other activity. This includes tending to children, using electronic devices, eating, applying makeup, changing the radio/CD/ iPod and adjusting the climate controls.
Be Aware of Road Conditions
Maintain Your Vehicle Make sure your brakes, exhaust, tires, lights, battery hoses and mirrors are all in good working order. Also, keep the inside tidy – a water bottle under the brake pedal is a recipe for disaster.
Stay Visible Drive with you headlights on, even during the day. This makes you more visible to pedestrians and other drivers.
Pedestrian Safety It’s important for drivers to take extra care when turning right at a red light. Remember that pedestrians may not see or hear vehicles approach.
Be Cautious Use extra care around schools and residential neighbourhoods. Keep your eyes on the road and be on the lookout for children who may suddenly dart across the street without looking.
Always check the local weather report of your destination. Weather can decrease visibility and your ability to control the vehicle. The slightest change in the elements can alter your vehicle’s performance.
Buckle Up
Leave a Safe Distance
Don’t Drive Impaired
Maintain at least ‘three steamboats’ (seconds) between your vehicle and the one in front of you in good driving conditions. In wet conditions, leave ‘six steamboats’ and in poor/slippery conditions leave 9 – 12 seconds.
Avoid Road Rage Reduce stressful driving by getting plenty of rest and allowing extra time to arrive at your destination.

PERFORMANCE MATTERS
If you are in a collision, your chances of being injured or killed are dramatically reduced when your seatbelt is fastened. This may seem obvious, however even one drink can impact reaction time. Play it safe - if you are going to drive, don’t drink. Make alternative arrangements. For more information about how you can stay safe on the roads, visit goodhandsadvice.ca, contact your local Allstate Insurance Agency or call 1-800-allstate.
Be Courteous Use your signals – people are not mind readers. In return, give way to other drivers who have their signals on and take turns when merging into a single lane.

Just like your tires, the fluids in your vehicle need to be checked each spring to ensure proper engine performance throughout the seasons. Chances are the radiator in your vehicle uses an extended–life antifreeze coolant to prevent it from freezing. Check the coolant level and quality, and consider flushing the radiator if necessary. Most vehicles require fresh coolant every 240,000 km.

Beyond these measures, helping keep your engine running at its best this spring is as easy as filling up with a high–quality gasoline. “Gasoline primarily contains carbon and hydrogen molecules, and combustion can create a residue, called “gunk, which is a build–up of carbon particles on critical engine parts, says Ken Mitchell, an Engineer from Shell Canada. “This gunk has a porous surface that can negatively affect combustion and the performance of your vehicle. Some high–quality fuels, like all three grades of Shell’s Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines, clean and protect critical engine parts from the

Next, have your tires changed and rotated to ensure best performance and safety on the roads. While winter tires work best in the snow, they can accelerate and brake poorly and offer reduced tread life on dry asphalt. Spring is the best time to swap back to your performance–oriented summer or all–season tires, storing your winter set for later.
While you’re at it, be sure to check your oil and top up the rest of your fluids. The most common grade of engine oil in Canada is 5W30 which should perform well under both winter and summer driving conditions. Consult your owner’s manual for the recommended grade and quality of oil for your vehicle, and perform an oil and oil filter change at the recommended intervals to provide year–round protection.

Why get a spring tune–up? (NC)—One of the most important things you can do to reduce your fuel consumption and emissions is to keep your vehicle properly maintained, especially after our brutal Canadian winters. Did you know, for example, that worn or malfunctioning spark plugs can cause the engine to misfire, resulting in unburned, or wasted, fuel? Dragging brakes can significantly increase fuel consumption because your vehicle has to work harder to overcome the resistance.
Consult your owner’s manual to learn about the proper care and maintenance of your vehicle. Follow all the service recommendations and change the air filter, spark plugs, engine oil and other fluids accordingly to ensure you get optimum performance and fuel efficiency. Community still rallying against Carp landfill JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com
A coalition of citizen groups opposed to any new landfill at Waste Management’s Carp Road site said, at an information session on Monday, March 28, at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex in Stittsville, they will be defending the community against the landfill proposal.
Opponents let Waste Management know they would fight the proposal based on issues of the location, perceived need and capacity requirement, odour and air quality, groundwater and surface water, traffic and transportation, ecosystems and social and economic considerations. Olivia Nixon, a coalition spokesperson at the meeting, criticized the ongoing Waste Management environmental assessment

process of open houses as not providing required information to the community. She also made it clear that the whole process was only in its early stages and contrary to any rumours, the new landfill is “not a done deal.” “Don’t let anyone tell you it’s a done deal because it’s not,” she declared. She noted that in both 2006 and 2007, the community had fought and defeated Waste Management proposals for landfill expansions at the site, stating that this can be achieved again if there is enough community opposition to the current proposal. Nixon cited off-site water contamination, odour problems and land use conflict situations as among the reasons why having a new landfill at the Carp Road site is a bad idea. “Carp Road is simply not an acceptable location for a landfill,” she told the 110 people who filled the meeting hall at the GRC. Among those at the meeting were councillors Shad Qadri of Stittsville, Eli El-Chantiry of West Carleton/March and Marianne Wilkinson of Kanata North. Nixon noted that back in 2006, the community was told there would be a crisis if new landfill capacity was not approved. Now, five years later, there is no such crisis, she proclaimed, providing a graph that showed even with the current status quo and no new diversion initiatives, landfill capacity available to the City of Ottawa will handle the need up to the year 2023. “It’s not Ottawa that has a crisis,” she said. “It’s Waste Management that has a crisis.” She expressed concern about the proposed 6.5-million-cubic-metre lifetime capacity of the proposed new landfill and particularly that the proposed service area for it is all of Ontario – including Toronto.
“It’s very clear that Waste Management wants this capacity to service all of Ontario,” she said, adding that what Waste Management is seeking in this current proposal is the new landfill and all of the other parts of the proposal, like diversion and recycling, are just window dressing to try to make the landfill more acceptable. Nixon said the Ontario Ministry of the Environment (MOE) completely disregarded the community’s input and kept the EA to a restricted focus centered on a new landfill operation when it approved the terms of reference for the Waste Management proposal last November One way the coalition will be fighting back is by submitting its own version of an EA study on the proposal, giving what it views as the community’s outlook on the matter. Harold Moore, another coalition spokesperson at the meeting, noted that the approved EA process requires Waste Management to determine existing conditions at the site through baseline studies, which should then be presented to the community. This has not yet happened, even though Waste Management is moving on in its EA process, he stated. Moore noted that in 2007, there were over 5,000 complaints filed about odours from the existing landfill site. He said that the existing landfill does not smell bad now because it has reached its capacity and is in the process of being capped. “It doesn’t smell now because it is closed,” Nixon said, but predicted that any new landfill will smell – it will just be a matter of time. Moore urged residents to write in about their complaints. The contact point for the coalition is info@nodump.ca.

City spending more on fewer tech projects Ottawa will be spending more on technology this year, but the city is streamlining the number of projects it takes on. Instead of spreading its $41million budget too thinly, the city’s information technology department will focus on 61 projects this year, down from the 131 it had originally planned to tackle. In a year when departments were told to keep budget increases below 2.5 per cent to avoid large tax increases, the IT department received an additional $1 million this year. Much of the $15 million that is supposed to go towards new technologies will be spent on the Service Ottawa initiative – a fiveyear plan that will make many of the city’s services, from arena bookings to purchasing parking passes, available online. Another large undertaking is the city’s fiver-year technology roadmap, which will modernize aging technology and free up the IT department’s resources to focus on new initiatives, instead of
available at the time of the meeting. That didn’t sit well with former IT subcommittee chair, Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson, who wanted to see a full list of the 61 projects. “I think it’s important that we have some idea of what we’re working on,” Wilkinson said. The current chair of the committee, Tierney, said he has been working with staff to create a list that all members of the committee will be able to understand. That list should be ready in time for the next IT subcommittee meeting, he said. Tierney said the committee will be getting a detailed list at its third meeting of the year and of this term of council – a list that had not existed previously during the Wilkinson’s tenure as chair (the committee was created last spring). “You need to have a good presentation,” Tierney said. “Do you know what TPO data-flow strategy is? Probably not. When you put that up there, it’s just going to create a mountain of questions … It will have to be in plain English, that’s the problem.”

maintaining the crumbling, labour-intensive technologies that are being used today. Right now, a great deal of the IT department’s resources are spent maintaining the city’s aging technology, said Coun. Tim Tierney (Beacon Hill-Cyrville), who chairs the city’s IT subcommittee. “Service Ottawa is receiving a very large capital investment, and that is going to allow us to build a foundation that this enormous infrastructure will be built on,” said Fraser Hirsch, manager of information security and project services for the city. “We have an infrastructure just like the roads people have an infrastructure. Ours just happens to be a superhighway, and we need to invest in that.” Other priorities include ensuring the city’s credit- and debitcard payment practices comply with industry standards for data security, and investing in the city’s “open data” initiative. The city’s IT subcommittee heard about the changes on March 21, but a full list describing all 61 projects was not yet

The new landfill footprint is the only component of the WCEC that requires EA approval under the Environmental Assessment Act (EAA). The proposed location of the WCEC and the new landfill footprint component is within the City of Ottawa in the area shown on the map below. The purpose of the EA is to study the potential environmental effects (positive or negative) of the proposed new landfill footprint. Key components of an EA include consultation with government agencies and the public; consideration and evaluation of alternatives; and, the management of potential environmental effects. Conducting an EA promotes good environmental planning before decisions are made about a proposal. Consultation WM recently held a series of Public Open House events as well as a Workshop to discuss the EA for the proposed landfill footprint and other ancillary facilities to be located at the WCEC. As part of the next phase of the EA, WM is hosting a series of Open Houses scheduled for the week of March 29th - 31st, 2011. An additional Open House has now been added. The specific date, time and location of this additional Open House is as follows:
613-229-9977
Thursday April 7, 2011 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Stittsville Legion 1481 Stittsville Main Street, Stittsville The WCEC Open House #2 sessions will provide an opportunity for attendees to speak directly with WM and the consulting team on the alternative methods of proceeding with the new landfill and ancillary facilities. This will also provide an opportunity to further refine the criteria, indicators and measures proposed as part of the evaluation process. Information on current studies (baseline studies), the approval process and future planned consultation activities will also be provided. Your input at this Open House will be reviewed and incorporated by WM and the Project Team in the development of a Recommended Alternative for the new landfill footprint at the WCEC.

Long-time Kanata resident John Hogg was selected to represent the Green Party. is a long-distance, cross-country skier. Hogg has a background which includes management and executive positions in high-tech companies ranging from startups to multinational corporations. He has served and chaired on neighbourhood, community and school associations. Currently, Hogg is the chief executive officer of the federal Green Party riding association. “If we, as a society, focus on the real issues, we can solve them,” Hogg said. “That’s why I joined the Green Party; the party knows what matters and believes that success comes from working together.” Hogg’s campaign kick-off is set to take place at O’Connors Irish Pub in the Kanata Centrum on Saturday, April 2, at 7 p.m. For more info, visit www.johnhogg.ca.

Long-time Kanata resident John Hogg was selected to represent the Green Party as the federal candidate for Carleton-Mississippi Mills on Saturday, March 26. Hogg and his family have lived in the riding for 21 years, and he said he has an excellent understanding of the prevailing issues. “The voters of Carleton-Mississippi Mills say they are looking for something different,” said Hogg in his acceptance speech. “Here is the opportunity to make a lasting, fundamental change.” A critical issue for the riding that has been ignored is the changed global economy of the 21st Century, he said. “The days of cheap energy are gone. There’s an urgent need for us to become more environmentally responsible,” said Hogg, who is a piper in the Highland Mist Pipe Band. “We have to evolve our community to reduce and adapt to climate change. At the same time, our riding has the resources, the people and the entrepreneurial spirit to prosper in a low-carbon society – if we enable it at all levels of government.” He also said there is a need to remove the dependence on landfills, to preserve natural resources, help farmers develop their land to produce food for local markets, move to a mass transit system and fix the health care system. “(We need) to come to grips with a health care system that lets so many down when they need it most,” said Hogg, who
