A young girl who drowned in a Kanata wave pool in 2008 loved swimming and was set to take lessons. At the outset of a coroner’s inquest into eight-yearold Edine Ilunga’s drowning death on Oct. 19, 2008, the deceased girl’s father painted a picture of a girl who was happy and comfortable in the water, if not a very skilled swimmer. Edward Ilunga said his children, including Edine, often swam in a pool at the family’s apartment building four years before the girl’s death, and when the family travelled the children always asked to stay at a hotel with a pool. But Edward Ilunga couldn’t say that his daughter could swim in deep water, or swim across a pool. She was enrolled to begin taking swimming lessons after her death. Edine Ilunga was attending the birthday party of a friend at the Kanata Leisure Centre and Wave Pool, a city-owned facility. Edward Ilunga recounted the circumstances surrounding the evening of his daughters’ drowning during the first day of the inquest, which was expected to last approximately five days. He said he knew there was a possibility of Edine going into the water during the party, but noted that the child had attended other parties at community centres with pools and there is no swimming. Derek Foster’s plan wasn’t a get rich quick one, but he was able to quit the rat race at the age of 34 and stay at home with his wife and five children from age one through 10. Foster started saving $200 per month while attending Carleton University studying for his Bachelor of Commerce. This is when he started investing. When he graduated from Carleton in 1993 Foster went to Australia with the money he saved. “When I graduated we were in a recession. I never really got a serious job. I would work at places like Radio Shack and save up money,” Foster said, adding that he backpacked through Europe and taught English in Korea. Over time he developed an investment strategy he says is so simple a six-year-old could illustrate it with a crayon. “A lot of people treat the stock market like a casino. They buy Nortel at $25 (per share) and then hope for it to go to $100. I don’t have a crystal ball, so my method is a lot simpler,” Foster said. While Foster said he made a lot of mistakes at first, he said he has found a formula that works. He looks for everyday things like toothpaste or Coca-Cola then invests in them and waits for the dividend cheques to roll in. Johnson and Johnson is one of Foster’s largest holdings and their dividends have been rising for almost 40 straight years. Foster said investors’ dividends are now 300 per cent more than they were in 2000. “With five kids, it’s nice to know some of the money we spend on Band-aids will come back to us in the form of dividends,” the Barrhaven resident said. He also invests in Wal Mart, a place he probably spends a lot of his time. While he doesn’t have a villa in Spain, Foster said his plan pays the mortgage and lets him and his wife stay home with their children. “I just look for really simple things that people will still need if there is a recession,” he said. “Most people if they lose their jobs tomorrow are still going to brush their teeth.” Foster has written five books on the subject: “Stop Working: Here’s How You Can”, “The Lazy Investor”, “Money for Nothing: And Your Stocks For Free”, “Stop Working

A scaled down plan to build the Kanata north recreation complex was on display during an open house held at the Mlacak Centre on May 10. The City of Ottawa said last month that plans to build the recreation complex would be delayed a year after the National Capital Region YMCA announced it was pulling $6-million in funding for the project. City council told staff to revise the centre’s design to keep within the project’s $43.14-million budget. The project’s architect was forced to shave 1,395 square metres off the complex’s original 9,846-square-metre building, and scrap plans to build family and personal fitness areas, a running track and an expanded cardio area – trademark services of the YMCA. But most of the original plan is still intact, which includes an eight-lane swimming pool, and a double gymna-

sium. It’s not plan A, said Terry Sheldon, chair of the Kanata north recreation complex’s steering group’s fundraising committee – but it’s still a great recreation building. “We now have an enhanced B+ plan,” said Sheldon. “I have been delighted with what they have been able to do – this version has surprised me it’s so good.” The site plan hasn’t changed all that much, said Paul Landry, a senior project manager with the City of Ottawa. The building is a little smaller, and the city was forced to drop plans to include a child care space and a family fitness zone. But adjustments were made to provide a little extra multi-purpose room space. “The redesign is probably a better building,” Landry said. “It’s being built to the city’s program requirements.” The city had altered the original plan to make room for an enhanced cardio-gym and to provide child care space when the YMCA had stepped in as a partner. “Before we were trying to fit with the YMCA,” Landry said. Kanata North Coun. Marianne

Wilkinson said she liked the redesign. “I’m really pleased with how they’ve been able to keep most of the features that were in the original plan,” she said. The plans for the recreation centre include a skateboard park, two outdoor basketball courts, a gymnasium and fitness centre, community meeting rooms and a water play area. The recreation centre will be located on a six-hectare site at 4101 Innovation Dr. near March Road and Terry Fox Drive. The project is scheduled to go to tender by the end of May, with construction to start in the fall. The city hopes to open the building in the fall of 2013. GUINNESS RECORD The recreation complex’s community-led fundraising committee is looking to break a world record for the opening ceremony of the building. But the committee is keeping the project under wraps for now, said Sheldon. The committee is also looking to lease the naming rights for the recreation complex to either an individual or company.

Still, Edward Ilunga said he was satisfied that there would be parents and adults supervising the party, as well as staff at the pool to ensure children “are playing safely, don’t get hurt and don’t go too deep. “I did not have much concern,” when he dropped off his daughter at the pool, Edward Ilunga said. Dr. Roger Skinner, the supervising coroner for the region, was overseeing the inquest.

The inquest will look at the safety standards at the public pool, and jurors may advise Skinner to make recommendations that could prevent deaths in similar circumstances. Lifeguards, the father of the girl celebrating her birthday, the pathologist and a series of experts in the field of safety and lifeguarding were also set to testify. Edward Ilunga said his daughter had never been to a wave pool before. The wave machine was not activated at the time of her death.

15-year-old Megan Wang poses next to her award-winning painting, “A Fleeting Moment”.

City honours Young at Art COURTNEY SYMONS Kourier-Standard

Standing next to her painting titled “A Fleeting Moment,” 15-year-old Megan Wang shrugged her shoulders in modesty when describing her inspiration for the piece. “I was looking through some photos on the internet, trying to find something that caught my eye,” the Earl of March student said. A pair of eyes was what caught her eye, and she combined them with a melting patch of ice covering crystal blue water that matched the eyes exactly. Tear drops fall into the water. “It’s meant to symbolize global warming,” she said. “To make people stop and think.” Young at Art celebrated its fifteenth anniversary at the Kanata Civic Art Gallery this year, and has expanded to include exhibits in the east and centre areas of Ottawa as well. Wang’s art was selected for four different awards by the jury evaluating the works, including the top prize for the painting category. This year, Young at Art received 322 submissions from 53 schools across the city. Allison Fagan, a Kanata artist and MC of the awards ceremony, held at the Mlacak Centre on Sunday, May 15, said she was proud to be part of the event. “We are humbled by the work that comes in,” she said. “These young local artists are showing world-class skills.” Mara Habash, a 16-year-old from All

Saints Catholic High School, won multiple awards for her drawing of an old man. Her work, titled “Rajasthan, India” explains where the man came from. “I guess I like drawing old men,” she said with a laugh. Another award-winner, Abby Cao, is 14 years old and attends Canterbury High School. Her artwork entitled “Perisesarma;” difficult to pronounce, but meaning, “crab.” “I saw a photo of the crab, and the colours were amazing,” she said. “I wanted to see if I could recreate them.” Cao and Habash’s artwork both won New Art Festival Awards. Formerly called Art in the Park, the New Art Festival is held in the Glebe and showcases local artists. This year, the young woman’s eyes and the old man’s face will be displayed there. Fagan says that one of the best parts of being a part of Young at Art is seeing participants come back. “Year after year, we see these young people growing and developing in their work,” she said. “It’s beautiful to see.” The exhibition allows submissions from artists between the ages of 12 and 19, and allows the young artists to be featured in community galleries. Other Young at Art ceremonies took place earlier this month at the Trinity Art Gallery in Orleans and Centrepointe Theatre in Nepean. The Kanata Civic Art Gallery will continue to showcase the Young at Art exhibit until May 24. It will then be replaced by a showcase by adult artists, called Back Atcha!

Celebrating Victoria Day

V

ictoria Day is our gateway to the summer season after a brutally long winter. We head to the cottage, the beach, go on a road trip or host a back yard barbecue. Whatever your reason to celebrate this weekend, we often forget why we have this holiday. What we are really celebrating on this May long weekend — now some 110 years after the death of Queen Victoria in 1901 (she was born on May 24, 1819) — is the birthday of whichever monarch happens to be on the throne at the time. Lumping all the monarchs’ birthdays together seemed to be the way to go. Victoria Day has also been known as the Queen’s Birthday, Empire Day, and Commonwealth Day. The holiday name was changed to Empire Day in the 1890s when enthusiasm for the British Empire was at a peak. By the mid-20th century, however, the Empire had given way to the Commonwealth, so the holiday became known as Commonwealth Day. In 1977, Commonwealth Day was moved to the second Monday in March and Canadians continued to celebrate Victoria Day in May. Victoria was born Princess Victoria of Saxe-

Coburg at Kensington Palace in London, the daughter of Prince Edward and granddaughter of King George III. Towards the end of George III’s life it became a matter of some concern that none of his 15 children had heirs. George’s eldest son George IV took the throne after his father’s death. However, due to the death of George IV’s daughter Charlotte in 1817 and the fact that he was estranged from his wife, the succession was still in question. Under pressure from Parliament and the public George III’s fourth oldest child, Edward, married the German princess, Victoire of SaxeCoburg. She was 31 years old. On May 24, 1819 Victoire gave birth to a daughter. She was christened Alexandrina Victoria, and it is this monumental birth that we have to thank for one of our favorite holidays. But the question remains, why do we celebrate Victoria’s Birthday when there have been five monarchs on the throne since her reign? Well, aside from how obviously amazing it is to have a long weekend just when we need to kickstart the summer season, there is historical precedence at work.

The Canadian quest: anything for 40 per cent off

M

usings about our national character go on all the time and are intensified during a federal election. What sort of people are Canadians? After the federal election, experts draw conclusions that might be correct, at least for a while. For example, we now learn that Quebecers are left-leaning federalists. Who knew? And what will they be four years from now? Meanwhile, somebody writes in the daily newspaper about being sick of the Group of Seven. Many Canadians thought the painters of the Group of Seven saw Canada in a typically Canadian way. Now others think not. We are not about jackpines and sloping rocks on Georgian Bay. At least, not any more. What are we about? It is difficult to keep track. Are we Starbucks or Tim Hortons, hockey or soccer, North American or British or multicultural? Are we still orderly and polite as opposed to raucous and freedom-loving? People used to think that, but they should have a look at some of the road rage around here. Particularly during the construction season. So, where to look for the national character? Well, it just so happens that the season for a splendid display of the KANATA

CHARLES GORDON Funny Town Canadian identity is upon us. That would be the season of the garage sale. Signs sprout on Saturday morning corners like maple bushes. Packs of vehicles creep around the early morning streets like contestants in the world’s slowest scavenger hunt. The reader of these signs, the inhabitants of these vehicles are Canadians, demonstrating one of their national characteristics – the love of a bargain. The bargain is found at the end of someone’s driveway. It is a totally unnecessary thing in many instances, perhaps a relative’s amateurish attempt at a Group of Seven scene, but much cheaper than you could buy it for anywhere else. So Canadians pay $3 for this thing, put it in the trunk and drive slowly off in search of another driveway with totally unnecessary things on display. Another

vehicle immediately occupies the space they vacated. This is a game we play every spring. For every Canadian who decides to donate his excess stuff to charity or school bazaars or church rummage sales, there is another who decides to sell it. In many cases the seller doesn’t need the money. And in many cases, the buyer either doesn’t need what is on sale or could afford to buy something new (thereby helping to keep the economy moving), but can’t resist a bargain. Let’s face it, getting stuff cheap is a hobby for many Canadians. You’ve met them. When you admire their new table, they tell you how they got it for 40-per-cent off. When they describe the trip they just took all they talk about is what a deal they got on the room and the souvenirs they bought at half-price. Here is a big part of our national identity: Canadians are frugal. Let’s say “frugal” rather than “cheap.” Our frugality means that we drive across town, burning up expensive gas, in search of the gas station where it is a fraction of a cent less expensive. Our frugality also means, unfortunately, that locally owned businesses perish in great numbers because multinationally-owned businesses sell stuff cheaper

and we can’t resist a bargain. If you wanted to draw a public policy conclusion from this, you might conclude that Canadians, a frugal people, wouldn’t like to pay higher taxes even if the revenue from those taxes would finance high-quality programs. Except in Quebec. You might also conclude that Canadians would favour the creation of a government agency, Garage Sale Canada, to facilitate the spread of garage sales and create uniform standards for the pricing of slightly used light bulbs, exercise videotapes and three-legged lawn chairs. Granted, creating such an agency might marginally increase the size of government, but hey, our national character has to be worth something.

Colon cancer survivor Laurie Hinsperger took part in the documentary Wrong Way to Hope to help bring to light the struggles young adults face after diagnosis. their struggles. She said there is very little support for young adults with cancer. “We’ve been called the forgotten age. There needs to be a lot more awareness of that age group because we have our own challenges to face and overcome, said Hinsperger. “I think the biggest thing for me is that I had no support, no resources – what the treatments did to me emotionally, physically, socially. She said she was fearful about going on the adventure trip because she was always being told she couldn’t do certain things. “The benefit of going on that trip is it was a once-in-a-lifetime thing. As a result of it, I have more potential in me. I know now that I can say, ‘No, I can do this, I want to try this, and if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work.’ Wrong Way to Hope was screened in Ottawa last month, where about 75 people attended the film. The Lang’s are working their way across the country to get out the message of hope and inspiration found in the film. Hinsperger said people can request a showing by visiting www.wrongwaytohope.com. “My advice that I give everybody is don’t let people tell you you can’t, said Hinsperger. “There’s always a way – never give up. My big thing is I don’t want to look back on the experience and say, ‘I wish I would have done it.’

Cancer survivor Laurie Hinsperger knew the wrong way to hope. At the age of 28, the young adult was told she had stage three colon cancer. Now 36 years old, Hinsperger has been in remission since 2005 – but her battle with the big C was a lonely one. “My first support group meeting, everyone was over 50 except me,â€? said the Carp woman. “I had nothing in common except the cancer.â€? Hinsperger was asked to be a part of a documentary about young adults dealing with cancer through the use of adventure therapy. “I was in a room getting a chemo treatment and I was the only young person in the room,â€? she said. “And the social worker came in and said, ‘Yeah, would you be interested in this?’â€? Wrong Way to Hope was launched by Mike and Bonnie Lang. Mike, 25 when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, wanted to find purpose in his suffering. “He was throwing a little spin,â€? said Hinsperger. “Just offering a different way to overcome the challenges we face as young adults with cancer.â€? Nine young adults set out for the Owyhee River in the Oregon desert to kayak the rapids. The group of cancer survivors related the struggle and fear of facing the unknown while they battled against the river to the trials they faced while overcoming the disease. “The first theme was fear and uncertainty. The idea was to relate that to our cancer experience but also to relate that to the river,â€? said Hinsperger, who added none of them had ever been kayaking before. “It’s one of those days where you don’t know what to expect. You think, ‘What am I doing here?’â€? She said each day was a process of discussing a challenge faced during cancer treatments. “We talked about relationships,â€? said Hinsperger. “We also talked about ‘re-introductorization’ ‌ it’s all about, once the treatments over, then what do we do? We’re not the same as when before we were diagnosed. “I’m a completely different person with completely different and new challenges.â€? The film takes a look at the emotional and physical challenges while giving insight into how each individual coped with

Mayor’s proclamations are a regular feature at the start of city council meetings, and for the most part, events such as Laughter Day, Global Love Day and Data Privacy Day pass largely unnoticed. But one proclamation that has become an annual tradition since 2002 is getting some serious – and critical – attention from the community, especially on the social networking site, Twitter. Mayor Jim Watson has declared May 12, 2011 to be Respect for Life Day in the City of Ottawa, coinciding with a large anti-abortion march on Parliament Hill that usually draws approximately 10,000 people to the capital. The proclamation reads: “The rights of the people of Canada including the unborn, the elderly and those with handicaps are gradually being eroded.” The mayor came under fire on May 9, when word of the proclamation spread like wildfire online. But Watson stood by the proclamation, saying that the city has a responsibility to abide by the Ontario Human Rights Code. Watson noted that he served on city council under former mayor Jacquelin Holzman, who famously refused to declare gay and lesbian “pride” week, which landed the city in court. “I’m not prepared to bring the city through another human rights trial,” Watson said. “I happen to be pro-choice,” he added. “I don’t happen to agree with those people who take away a woman’s

group for pro-life,” Hartlin said. “I have never really sorted it out whether (the March for Life) is (political) or not,” she added. When asked if he thought a pro-life proclamation fell under the definition of “political” or “religious” events, Watson said the “political” aspect of proclamations refers to “big P” politics at the federal and provincial level. “Every decision we make, or every proclamation you can claim is political in one way or another,” he said. “But the intent of the policy is to ensure that we are not getting into partisan politics by denouncing a prime minister or denouncing a premier or attacking a political party, because that’s not our role.” According to the city’s policy, proclamations are intended to “encourage public awareness or provide recognition for events, achievements, and activities that are significant to Ottawa” and to “acknowledge individuals who have achieved national or international distinction, or whose contribution to the community demands significant recognition.” In 2010, the city issued 121 proclamations. So far this year, the mayor has already signed off on 45 proclamations, including another Respect for Life Day on April 30. That proclamation has been requested by education pro-life group Action Life and granted each year since 1993, according to the executive director, Louise Harbour. “I think to bring every single proclamation to council would not only expend a great amount of time, but would also be very divisive,” the mayor said.

right to choose, but at the same time it isn’t the mayor’s personal beliefs and hunches that should rule the day. If a pro-choice group wants to have a day named after them, that fits the policy, they should have a day named after them.” That’s not something pro-choice groups like Planned Parenthood Ottawa are interested in, said the organization’s executive director, Heather Holland. PPO’s efforts are better spent on educating people about pregnancy options and improving access to abortions than seeking a token proclamation. Holland said Respect for Life Day doesn’t jive with the city’s own proclamation policy. According to its policy, the city issues proclamations for any group or individual who requests one, as long as it doesn’t violate human rights. That means the proclamation can’t be discriminatory, illegal or espouse hatred, violence or racism. The policy also states that proclamations shouldn’t be politically or religiously motivated. Holland argued that the organization that requested the proclamation, Campaign Life Coalition, is arguably both political and religious. “I think it clearly crosses that line,” she said. Wanda Hartlin is the secretary for the national March for Life, the pro-life demonstration that took place on Parliament Hill on May 12. The event isn’t religiously affiliated, Hartlin said. “We’re Canada’s national lobbying

A committee has narrowed down the list of possible names for the new Catholic elementary school under construction in Kanata Lakes. The six choices are: St. Basil, St. Cecilia, St. David, St. Gabriel, St. Julia or St. Lucia. The list was selected by a committee of parents, teachers and school board administration. The committee reviewed all the names suggested by members of the community and considered their appropriateness, Catholic identity and the contributions of the individual to be honoured. Father Peter Sanders, the board chaplain, also reviewed the list to verify their authenticity and “Catholicity”. The school, which is set to open on 400 Keyrock Dr. this September, will take students from St. Isidore and Georges Vanier Catholic elementary schools. The board is now asking parents of children attending the school to

choose their favourite name from the list and e-mail the selection to Kanata. north@ottawacatholicschools.ca by May 30. The committee will submit a list of six names to the Ottawa Catholic School Board on June 14. NAMES The list of six names are: • Saint Basil: St. Basil is also knows as St. Basil the Great. He was born at Ceasarea of Cappadocia in 330 A.D. After becoming a monk, he founded many monasteries, and in 370 A.D. was ordained Bishop of Ceasarea. He was very active as bishop and was a very learned man, with great eloquence, as well as being very charitable and holy. His feast day is on Jan. 2. • St. Cecilia: St. Cecelia is the patron saint of musicians and Church music. She is one of seven women, excluding the Blessed Virgin, commemorated by name in the Canon of the Mass. St. Cecilia lived during the second century, and was well educated and from a noble family. With her two brothers she

devoted herself to the burial of Christian martyrs. For this she was martyred, after the martyrdom of her brothers. Before her death she arranged that her house would be used as a church. Her feast day is Nov. 22. • Saint David: Saint David lived in the sixth century, and was a Celtic monk. He became the Archbishop of Wales, and spread the faith among the Celtic tribes of western England. He lived a simple life and was a very gentle person. He said:” Be joyful and keep your faith.” He is the patron saint of Wales, and his feast day is on March 1. • Saint Gabriel: The Archangel Gabriel is revered in Christianity, Judaism and Islam. In Catholic tradition Gabriel is the angel who announced the birth of Jesus to Mary, as well as the birth of John the Baptist to Elisabeth. Gabriel is therefore a messenger of God. He is often depicted with a musical instrument, the horn. His feast day is on Sept. 29.

Hike for Hospice Palliative Care raises over $65,000 JESSICA CUNHA jessica.cunha@metroland.com

Around 385 people turned out for the Friends of Hospice Ottawa’s seventh annual Hike for Hospice Palliative Care at Andrew Haydon Park on May 1. Many of the people at the event were there to honour Julia Hill, who was named honourary chair of the hike. Hill, the inaugural TD Canada Trust branch manager in Stittsville, has been battling cancer for two years. “She’s a cancer warrior,” said Ruth Cameron, director of event planning and financial management for the nonprofit. “I was shocked and overwhelmed and honoured and humbled by Ruth coming to me and asking me to do that,” said Hill. “At the end of the day people just gave so much of themselves to the event. It was just overwhelming to see the number of people who came out to help.” Although Hill isn’t a client of Friends of Hospice Ottawa, she symbolizes its mandate of helping others. “She’s a very, very community-minded person. Even when she’s sick she’s always thinking of other people,” said Cameron, who met Hill seven years ago when she helped set up the banking for Friends of Hospice Ottawa. “She depicts what hospice is all about. That’s why we chose her.” Hill, who lives in Katimavik, has worked for TD banks across the city, including the branches in the Kanata Centrum and Barrhaven. The bank was heavily involved with the hike. “All the TD’s in Ottawa were involved,” said Cameron. “They were all supportive of her because they knew her.” Hill, who is also a member of the Rota-

ry Club of Ottawa Kanata Sunrise, said she was touched to see how involved everyone was with the event. “Personally, I’m totally overwhelmed. People I’ve been involved with, with the rotary club and TD Canada Trust and friends within the organization pulled out all the stakes. People just really went to bat for the event.” Hill completed the five-kilometre hike in a wheelchair. Eighteen signs with Hill’s face and the message “Do It For Julia” were placed along the trail. “Co-workers, family and friends all pushed me through, everybody helped,” said Hill. “It was such a beautiful day.” She added it’s important to have services such as Friends of Hospice Ottawa. “Friends of Hospice Ottawa, they make it so personal. Because it’s right in the community I think it makes it more accessible and it’s just wonderful to have something in the west end.” The event raised over $65,000 in donations, exceeding its goal of $50,000. People can still donate online until the end of May by visiting www.friendsofhospiceottawa.ca. All the proceeds collected help to fund the services offered by Friends of Hospice Ottawa, including home visits, transportation and caregiver support. “In my mind it was fantastic just to see that many people out supporting Friends of Hospice Ottawa,” said Cameron. Friends of Hospice Ottawa provides hospice palliative care services in the Ottawa west region at no cost to the clients or their families. The charity’s aim is to relieve suffering and improve the quality of living and dying. Hike for Hospice Palliative Care is a national event sponsored by the Canadian Palliative Care Association.

New indoor soccer field just a mouse click away West Ottawa soccer competes in $100,000 online contest BLAIR EDWARDS blair.edwards@metroland.com

The reconstruction of Kanata’s indoor soccer field at the Thunderbird Sports Centre is just a click of a mouse away, said Cindy McEwen, the sponsorship chair of the West Ottawa Soccer Club. The soccer club is running third in the Pepsi Refresh Project, a Canada-wide online voting contest with a prize of $100,000 going to the winner. “We are asking our members to vote once per day during the duration of the contest from May 1 to June 30, and to forward the message to their friends and families,” said McEwen. The contest is open to individuals, non-profit and for-profit organizations, with six categories: health, arts and culture, food and shelter, the planet, neighbourhoods or education. West Ottawa Soccer is competing in the health category, and as of May 13, was trailing behind only two other community groups: Angels Animal Rescue Society and the front-runner,

Macdonald Drive Elementary School, in Newfoundland. McEwen is asking people to vote – and vote often – for West Ottawa Soccer. “People should be voting for this because West Ottawa Soccer services a huge community,” said McEwen. “It’s for kids to belong to a team, there’s nothing more valuable than that. The club needs the money to buy new sports equipment and build an indoor turf after a winter fire caused $2.5 million in damages to the Thunderbird Sports Centre, located on Richardson Side Road. The fire destroyed West Ottawa Soccer’s indoor field and thousands of dollars of soccer equipment. Between the insurance coverage and savings, the club can replace the turf, but would rather put their savings towards programs, equipment and training. The club filmed a video and placed it, along with an overview of its project, on the Pepsi Refresh Project website: http:// pep.si/irwfug.

The Club’s No Place to Play project will benefit 120,000 residents in western Ottawa by providing a year-round indoor soccer facility, said McEwen. If the club wins, it will spend $75,000 on a new indoor turf and $25,000 to buy soccer training equipment. The club’s facebook site is www.facebook.com/page s / We s t - O t t aw a - S o c c e r / 211868932162806?sk=wall and its website address is www. wosc.com. The club is working with The Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre, an organization that helps children with autism, which is competing in the $25,000 category of the contest. “We are sharing votes,” said McEwen. The Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre’s link in the $25,000 contest is http://pep. si/jAkxfB. The West Ottawa Soccer Club was formed in 2010, an amalgamation of three west-end clubs in Kanata, Goulbourn and West Carleton. The club offers recreational soccer programs for children ages four to 18, and competitive league play for ages nine to 18 as well as adult programs.

The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services has designated May 15 to 21, as Police Week in Ontario and has provided police services with a theme that will be very familiar to Ottawa police and community members because it is also our core value – working together for a safer community. Planned largely by our Community Police Centre officers and their volunteers, this year’s list of events and activities includes a variety of community safety topics and reaches community members in different venues across the city. A full list of events is available online at ottawapolice.ca (community events calendar). The community spirit and involvement of our police members and volunteers can be seen in action throughout the year at various safety presentations, community-police committees, lectures, fundraising events, community fun days and fairs to name a few. Police Week is an opportunity to celebrate and promote some of our community policing efforts.

A woman whose money and car were stolen in a carjacking at a Kanata ATM drive-thru will get her vehicle back, said Ottawa police. But the police haven’t yet found her robber who disappeared with the victim’s several hundred dollars in cash when he drove away on Eagleson Road.

Const. Henri Lanctot, a spokesperson for the Ottawa police said police had recovered the victim’s car while searches for the robber were ongoing. The Ottawa police said the suspect is a black male in his 20s, six feet tall, slim build, unshaven, wearing dark layered clothing and a hoodie. The robbery happened in the 700 Block of Eagleson Road on Monday, May 9 at around 10:15 p.m.

Man in critical condition after car crash KOURIER-STANDARD STAFF A 56-year-old man was listed in critical condition in hospital this morning after a single vehicle collision on Friday, May 13. A police officer who was first on scene started CPR on the man and shocked him twice with the defibrillator from his cruiser. Paramedics arrived minutes later. The man regained a pulse

moments before he was rushed to The Ottawa Hospital’s Civic campus. The accident was likely caused by a medical event, said paramedics. The crash happened just after 6:30 a.m. on Terry Fox Drive near Hazeldean Road. The southbound lanes on Terry Fox were shut down while police re-routed traffic through the Kanata Recreation Complex until just after 10 a.m.

All five schoolhouses were built over 106 years ago with some of them originally existing as log structures from as early as 1835 and some with heritage status. Designed for wide appeal, the activities vary with each schoolhouse and are outlined below. • S.S. No. 1, March at 400 Goldridge Dr. was re-built in 1886 where a log building first existed 30 years earlier. Now a heritage site and meeting place owned by the City of Ottawa, it’s the spot for trying out Maypole dancing (if weather permits) and English Country Dancing. • S.S. No. 2, March at 895 March Rd., was first erected in 1828 and then re-built in 1892. In 2006, the beautiful historical restoration resulted an Ottawa Architectural Conservation Award. It now houses Dr. James Lacey’s Kanata Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery. Parking also available

next-door at Marchwood Dental, 1054 Halton Terr. See an original, anatomy quiz preserved on the pine blackboard, try making some pioneer crafts or watch or play hopscotch. • S.S. No. 1, Huntley at 2193 Richardson Side Rd., was rebuilt in 1883 where “Mulligan’s School’ first existed as log structures in 1820s. It is now The Cheshire Cat pub, a heritage site where you can treat yourself to old-fashioned cookies, candies and preserves for sale at the bake table and sip free coffee. Look at old textbooks and the photographs that are hanging on the walls of this delightful schoolhouse. This schoolhouse is open to the tour from 10 a.m. to noon, and for tasty lunches after this time. • S.S. No. 2, Huntley at 3012 Carp Rd., Carp began as a log school around 1835 and was rebuilt in 1903. Now it is a residence owned by Christ Church, which dates back to 1838. At these two locations, there will be class, teaching about pioneer life, handson activities, artisans at work (weaver, spinner, lace-maker, quilter, tapestry and needlepoint), display of artifacts from the early 20th century, day-old baby chicks; Outdoor games behind the schoolhouse (horseshoes, races) and a photo opportunity with wooden Edwardian cut-out figures. • R.C.S.S. No. 3, March at 2355 Second Line Rd., Dunrobin, was re-built from a log structure in 1905 and is now a residence owned by the original land owner’s descendants. Skip and toss beanbags while you wait for school to start. Study 1911 lessons in this formal schoolroom. Sing folk songs of that period. Listen to story telling by former students and teachers, who attended a one-room schoolhouse. Capture memories with a photo opportunity in a buggy and cutter.

The city is hoping of have construction on Goulbourn Forced Road construction completed in time for the opening of a new elementary school this fall. The project will realign Goulbourn Forced Road from Kanata Avenue to Terry Fox Drive and Kanata Avenue, from Richardson Side Road to Goulbourn Forced Road. The project was originally supposed to be done two years ago, but money from the project was used to cover unforeseen

costs in the construction of Kanata Avenue, so Goulbourn Forced Road was delayed. Since Kanata North Catholic Elementary School is opening in September, city staff was able to find additional development charge funds to cover the forced road reconstruction this summer, Wilkinson said. The school is located at the southwest corner of Keyrock Drive. Work on Goulbourn Forced Road will start sometime in July after construction finishes on Terry Fox Drive. The project will cost $2 million.

St. Anne Catholic Elementary School is offering free Mandarin and Spanish lessons this summer. The program, run by the Ottawa Catholic School Board, is open to all students from any school board and from junior kindergarten to Grade 8. “Kanata has a large Chinese community,” said Min Zhao, who teaches international language at Holy Trinity Catholic High School. “They can improve their language skills; it’s really important they keep their language.” The five-week program, which goes from July 4 to August 5, runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m., Monday to Friday. Three Nepean schools also offer a number of international language programs for free, including: • Frank Ryan Catholic Senior Elementary School • St. Emily Catholic Elementary School • St Elizabeth Catholic Elementary School

AFTERNOON CAMP Zhao organizes the Kanata Chinese Summer Camp, which runs from 11:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. every day after the morning language session at St. Anne. The day-camp offers classes such as math, drawing and arts, dance, outdoor sports and gym, chess, baking and writing. “I feel lucky that the kids are in the camp,” said Zhao. “That they learn something and at the same time enjoy it.” The classes, which are broken down into groups by grades and ages, have about 20 to 25 students each, she said. “This camp really wants to improve the Chinese language,” said Zhao, who began teaching in China 20 years ago. “It’s really rewarding for me; it’s my passion.” The camp is now in its third year, and quickly gaining steam. In 2009, Zhao said there were less than 100 students. Last year, that number jumped to over 200. She said she’s expecting around the same numbers in 2011. She said the first question she asks

students is why they want to learn Mandarin. “You have to speak your goal,” said Zhao, who lives in Kanata Lakes. “It’s not that the teacher can push you. It’s a long-term commitment; you have to give yourself time to improve. Language is not a one-day thing.” Included in the camp is a hot lunch, provided by area-restaurants. “It makes it a little easier on the parents,” said Zhao, who added parents are given the week’s menu ahead of time. The Kanata Chinese Summer Camp costs $105 a week for the five weeks or parents have the option of putting their children in on a weekly basis. High school students are also encouraged to volunteer their time, which will go towards their community service hours. The deadline to register is June 11. For more information on the Kanata Chinese Summer Camp, visit www. KanataChinese.com or email info@ KanataChinese.com. The Sens Foundation announced today its plans for the eighth-annual Scotiabank Walk, Roll & Run for Roger’s House, which will be held on June 19 at Scotiabank Place. The Scotiabank Walk, Roll & Run is the signature fundraising event for the Sens Foundation’s charity of choice - Roger’s House. The Sens Foundation has made a long-term commitment to cover 30 per cent of the annual operating costs for Roger’s House. Walk, Roll & Run provides an opportunity for members of the community to get involved, while making an important and lasting contribution to countless children and their families in a time of need. “Walk, Roll & Run is a great way of bringing our community together for a day of family fun to raise important funds for Roger’s House, the region’s only pediatric palliative-care hospice.” said Sens Foundation president Danielle Robinson. “Meeting the Roger’s House families and hearing their stories always underscores why we must be successful in continu-

ing to provide additional funds to operate the facility.” This year’s Scotiabank Walk, Roll & Run for Roger’s House features the Irving Oil Tot-Trot, and the PwC two-kilometre and five-kilometre routes. The Nordion family fun zone, which includes Sens Street Tour activities, balloon artists, face painters, live entertainment, a barbeque lunch and much more will also return this year. The community can support the event by registering and collecting pledges or by sponsoring a member of Roger’s Dream Team. Roger’s Dream Team is part of an innovative fundraising campaign that encourages local businesses to sponsor one of its 10 members. Joining Roger’s Dream Team this year are Roger’s All-Stars, a group of families who have come together to support fundraising efforts and celebrate the lives of their deceased children. In addition, a T-shirt design contest was launched encouraging children to submit creative neck-tie designs in honour of former Senators assistant coach and Roger’s House namesake Roger Neilson, who was

Most parents talk to their kids about safe sex, drugs, and alcohol but what about depression and thoughts of suicide? Next to accidents, suicide is the second leading cause of death in Canada for youth from ages 15-24. Many have heard about Daron Richardson, a 14 year-old girl who took her own life on Nov. 13. She was an outgoing young girl who touched the hearts of many. Three of Daron’s close friends were inspired to carry on her memory. “(Losing Daron to suicide) really hit me that people have to go through this pain and devastation every single day when they shouldn’t have to,” says Lisa Benvenuti, a friend of Daron’s. The ‘Do It For Daron’ (D.I.F.D) fund, started by All Saints Grade 10 Student Lisa Benvenuti, shows individuals suffering from mental health issues that there are people trying to help the cause and fight the stigma of mental health. “By wearing the purple DIFD bracelets, it could inspire conversation and save somebody’s life.” DIFD is an organization that helps to get the word out about mental health and suicide, raise money, and inspire conversations that might not otherwise happen. The goal behind the organization is to let people know they can talk to friends, family, and even professionals about their feelings without being judged or feel unimportant. “I want to save lives,” says Lisa. “Being left with unanswered questions and disbelief is a different kind of pain that nobody should ever have to go through.” The DIFD foundation is rais-

ing awareness in our community. They have set up booths at five youth hockey tournaments and at the Scotiabank Place during the Ottawa Senators game on Feb. 26. “The Sens game was a huge success,” recalled Lisa with a smile on her face. “We raised $75,000 from the public, $25,000 from the Sens Foundation, and $100,000 from the Richardson family that night.” The organization has raised over $320,000 for the Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health – Youth Program and will continue to raise more. Daron’s birthday is now recognized as the annual DIFD Purple Pledge Day in Ottawa. Many schools participated in the Feb. 8 event by wearing pur-

ple clothing to honour Daron. All Saints Catholic High School, where Lisa attends, was a sea full of purple. “Everyone was there for each other and to give support,” says Hailey Perreault. “Even if they didn’t know Daron, people still wore purple to show they cared about the cause.” What do people really know about mental health? According to the Royal Ottawa Hospital, 20 per cent of Canadian youth are affected by a mental illness or disorder. Every 100 minutes a teenager will commit suicide and for every successful teenage suicide there are more than 100 unsuccessful attempts. All it takes to lower mental health issues is to be informed

and communicate with your friends and family. Once depression is noticed by peers, it helps make a difference for an estimated 80 per cent to help get their life back on track. Lisa has advice to give to families suffering from mental health issues. “Stay strong. Talk to your children about what’s happening in their lives and how they are feeling.” The Do It For Daron Foundation was put in place in an effort to encourage people to speak up, stand up, and make a difference. What will you leave behind? PATRICIA DAVIES All Saints staff

The 2010-11 graduating class of All Saints Catholic High School has big plans for their last year. Every year each graduating class received one Grad Tribute that symbolized their years at All Saints. This year, with over 300 hundred graduates, “one just isn’t good enough,” Laura Stemp, a member of the grad legacy committee, explains that the group had a lot of ideas for what will be their legacy,’ “Thankfully Mrs. Barry is allowing us to leave two,” she said. The first tribute the grad legacy com-

mittee is a time capsule -- Locker 2011. The school is dedicating locker 2011 to the graduating class, allowing each of them to place in it one thing that best describes there years at this school, decorating it and locking it until their reunion. The second tribute is a water fountain mural. Student Kelly Ho is the lead painter along with art teachers and committee members. Year of study in England an opportunity of a lifetime ERIC PRITCHARD All Saints staff

Imagine you are one of the thousands of applicants to a prestigious, and lifechanging university program. Imagine that there were only 120 spots available. Imagine going to the lush and beautiful England for a whole year. If you’re Jenn Bilczuk, you don’t have to imagine it. England is known for many things: The Royal Family, tourist attractions, like Big Ben or Stonehenge, and even the Beatles. But for Bilczuk, England will be her home for her first year of university. Some graduates go off the school and further their studies. Some go off and travel. But this one lucky Bilczuk has the opportunity to do both. “It’s like a double whammy, she said. After applying to a few universities in Canada, such as Queens and Carleton universities, Bilczuk was accepted to the Queens first-year program in England, residing and learning in one of the oldest standing brick buildings, Herstmonceux Castle. Thousands of people from across the world, coming from North America, Asia, Europe, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and the Caribbean all apply to be one of the 120 students accepted to the esteemed program at Herstmonceux

The best professors from around the world come and teach, and the students get amazing opportunities such as field trips across England, and one-on-ones with the professor of their program of study. This 15th century castle was built with the mindset of creating a castle focusing on grandeur and comfort, rather than defence. So it sits on a truly magnificent estate, which has passed through a number of owners until finally donated to Queens University. private owners until finally in 1946 the castle was sold to the British admiralty who converted the estate to be the new home of the Royal Greenwich

Observatory. Since the Herstmonceux Castle is so old, renovations were done before students were made to come and study there for their first year at Queens. The renovations modernized the Castle but still kept the existing structure and look the same. The first class spent their fall term studying at the new International Study Centre (ISC) at Herstmonceux Castle. Bilczuk never imagined she would get in, which is why she is still so shocked at her acceptance that came a little over a week ago. “My first idea was that I wasn’t going to get into Queens at all. I was going to give up on the fact. I was set to take a year off. I was being very pessimistic, the 17-year-old girl from Dunrobin said. “I’m so proud of her, and I think it’s an experience of a lifetime – someone would be crazy to turn it down, Amanda Logan, one of Bilczuk’s best friends said. Studying history in the Castle has been a dream of Bilczuk’s for a long time. The love for history started when Bilczuk was very young. She traveled a lot with her parents, visiting museums and cemeteries regularly. She had a fond interest in wanting to know everything about the past. She was one of few people who liked the artifacts in the museums because of the history, not because it was shiny. “I was in the front of the lines of all the guided tours, she said. While every other child her age was watching Disney movies for fun, Bilczuk focused on the historical parts of the movies, liking the castle architecture in Sleeping Beauty and the social class sys-

tem in Cinderella. Bilczuk goes to All Saints Catholic High School and takes every history course someone can take, earning an 85 per cent average almost every year. “I think my top three career choices would be an international history teacher, an historical researcher or a curator at museums all over the world, Bilczuk said. But whatever Bilczuk does, the program at Herstmonceux will give her the knowledge and appreciation for Europe and its history. Not only does Bilczuk get to do this program for a whole year, she then gets to go to Queens in Kingston, Ontario for years 2, 3 and 4, continuing her studies. “It’s a double whammy! she said. Bilczuk is worried about coming back to Queens after spending a year in England. “Everyone will already have made friends from first year – So it’ll be like starting all over again at university for a second time. Also, with the great opportunity Bilczuk will receive at Herstmonceux, being away from her friends and family for a whole year doesn’t settle well with her. But with all the technology the world has to offer in today’s generation, like Facebook and Skype, Bilczuk will only be a computer screen away from her closest friends and family. “On top of my acceptance, which I am happy about, I’m even more happy that my parents are actually letting me go, she said. So without further ado, Queens and Kings, move aside, Jenn Bilczuk is entering the castle.

ALL SAINTS STAFF School Council at All Saints is comprised of an active group of parents who take a keen interest in their children’s education. On Monday, June 13, at 7 p.m. in the library of All Saints Catholic High School, they have invited Dyan Eybergen to present Surviving the Teen Years.

They also hope to have the school resource officer present on appropriate use of technology. This is a good opportunity to learn how to handle the many issues that commonly arise in households with adolescents. The June 13 meeting is the place to be to help parents manage that stress and to gain a greater understanding of their teen.

More than an Artist MEGGIE JOHNSON All Saints Staff

High school is a time in which most people grow and discover a lot about themselves. Some find new interests; others establish themselves even more in what they already know they love. For Brianna Clark, she cemented herself in her love for the arts and being creative. All Saints offers a specialist high skills major (SHSM) in the arts. Brianna immediately signed up for the program. “I’ve only ever been interested in arts courses,” said Brianna. “I wanted to learn more about the things I like, so it seemed perfect.” Though she took a number of different classes in the arts including drama, visual arts and photography to complete the SHSM program, photography has caught her eye and heart. “It’s something I’ve been interested in for a long time now. Whenever I’m walking around I’ll see something and think that it would make a good photo. It’s just something I really love doing.” In fact, Brianna wants to further develop her love for the art next year. “I plan on studying photography at Algonquin College next year. It’s a really good program and I’m really excited for it to start,” she said. Outside her interest in photography, for the past few years Clark has been de-

Pharmacist’s Corner:

Be Sun Smart:

After a long cold winter it’s hard not to shed our layers and bask in the glorious heat of the sun and to shower our skin in the warmth of its rays. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take any precautions. Everyone knows that too much sun exposure can be harmful, to our eyes, your skin, to our youthful appearance and to our health.

Here are a few Tips to be Sun smart: •Limit sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. •Seek shade. If there is no shade, create your own with an umbrella. •Wear a wide-brimmed hat and clothing that covers your arms and legs. •Wear sunglasses that provide UVA and UVB protection. •Apply sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Look for a broadspectrum product that provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Choose a higher SPF if you will be spending longer periods of time outdoors, if you have fair skin, or if your doctor recommends it. •Women who are pregnant and those taking oral contraceptives may be at risk for darker pigmentation on the cheeks and forehead (“pregnancy mask”). If you are in this group, use a sunscreen with SPF 30 that has both UVA and UVB protection. •If you feel you must have a tan, use a self-tanning cream or bronzer, but remember that self-tanning products do not provide sun protection. •Check the UV index daily and take appropriate precautions. This information is readily available online.

Last month, All Saint’s Catholic High School performed a rendition of Lois Lowry’s book “The Giver”. The play was featured around a character named Jonas (Sean McCabe) who lived in a world where choices, war, fear, and pain did not exist. Every character was assigned a role in the community. Jonas was assigned the role of The Giver- a person who received and kept the memories of the community. In this role he began to learn the truth about life and the hypocrisy of his utopian world. This play was directed by Shawna Mcsheffrey and starred Sean Mc-

Cabe, Amanda Logan, Siobhan Fleury, Travis Graveline, Joey Assaad, Jon Bell, and Jana Patterson. The cast did an excellent job at capturing the emotional turmoil of their characters while demonstrating what could happen if we take our personal freedom for granted. If you missed this performance done by the All Saint’s production students you can also watch them in their upcoming production titled “Cabaret” taking place on May 19. This production features a variety of scenes from different popular productions along with some scenes written by the students. Tickets for this play will be sold at the door on the night of their Cabaret.

Passion. Perseverance. Drive. Present a man with a mountain, and he will climb. Give a girl a dream, and she will go to every length to succeed. Grade 12 student Mallory McCarthy had a dream. From the time she could shop, Mallory was putting together plans- whether they involved convincing her father to redo their basement, or creating her own “sophisticated meets eclectic” outfits. What started as a hobby soon grew into so much more. As she entered Grade 11, Mallory became engulfed by typical teenager anxiety- Where would she go in life? What did her future entail? For the free-spirited Mallory, choosing an interesting pathway for after high school was a daunting task. Then, opportunity knocked. All Saints decided to introduce a new arts course: Interior Design. “There was never much exposure to this field in high school . . .” says Mallory. “In fact, there still isn’t at many schools. Naturally, I jumped at the chance.“ While the course, taught by Ms. Dyer, was aimed at Grade 11 students with art prerequisites, Mallory would not be thwarted. Instead, she spent two months of her junior year in fundamentals of drawing, a course offered through Algonquin College. “I learned forms, drawing, sketching, shadingeverything that artistic students already knew. I am not an artist. I’m just really passionate about design.” Her passion drove her into All Saints’ new program, where she excelled. A few months in, another chance arrived. “When Ms Dyer suggested forming an interior design club, I jumped at the opportunity to be involved. Our main project was a big one- a renovation for St Mary’s Home in Ottawa’s east end. It’s a place to support pregnant teens and young mothers and fathers. We met frequently to plan ideas, put together concept boards. We worked really hard.” With this zealous undertaking, Mallory soon realized the career opportunities attached to her favourite pursuit. She spent the next several months completing a portfolio- a major project required by university and college design departments. “She devoted an immense amount of time . . . I don’t know how she did it!” adds Sarah Cook, a close friend. Having completed her workload and heard from her top-choice schools, Mallory is finally able to relax a little. A little, but not much. “With any creative pathway, it’s always competitive.” Mallory admits. “The design world is always changing; you have to keep up!” With all the effort required, is it really worth it? “There’s no silver platter. There is a driving force in me, something I can’t explain. Giving up is not an option. I’ll always find a way to make it work.”

Team helps poor in Dominican Republic

All Saints students travelled to the Dominican Republic this year to help people living in poverty. thing.” Though apprehensive at first, Matt says he’d do it all again in a heartbeat. Lauren believes the Dominican people she met “work harder than any other people that I have ever seen in my life and do so without complaining. They may not have material goods, but they have each other and that is all they ask for.” The Dominican Experience taught all its participants many things, gifting them with a new perspective and a deeper sense of gratitude. As Matt said, “I try not to be so stressed and busy anymore. It’s helped me learn to enjoy the little things in life and slow down and enjoy what I have and what I am doing.”

For most high school teenagers, a trip to the Dominican Republic is a chance to kick back and relax on the beach at an allinclusive resort. However, few people actually stop to think about the millions of people living in poverty only a few kilometers away. Nathalie Boucher, Matt Kivell and Lauren Wilson participated in the Dominican Experience 2011 Trip, a venture that was both eye-opening and heartopening for these students. Ten students and three staff members from All Saints Catholic High School jetted off to the Dominican in February. Their mission: to experience first hand what it is like to live in the Dominican Republic today. As an effort to help those living in poverty a large portion of the fee goes to help subsidize the families the participants live with, a welcome additional income for the family. “At first I was reluctant because of the cost,” admitted Matt, “the whole experience sounded out of my comfort zone.” Preparations began long before the trip. The DR team raised money to help fund social justice programs in the DR. “We gathered donated items like shoes and clothes for the families there,” explained Nathalie. “It was a lot of work but it was all worth it.” While in the Dominican, the students and adults stayed with Dominican host families, two to a family, for the course of the week. They learned to live like their Dominican host families, deprived of running water and proper plumbing. Students experienced both living and working conditions spending part of a day working at a sugar cane

plantation. “We worked the fields one day,” Nathalie says. “I thought that it was hard to do it for a few hours, but these people did it all day everyday to earn even the littlest bit of a living.” Workers as young as 13 work long hours without breaks to provide for their families. On average, a sugar cane worker earns four dollars for a 13 hour shift in the hot sun. “I can’t even describe how dedicated they were,” said Lauren as she recalls the Dominican workers. “They worked long, painful hours and never complained once.” In the following days, the students visited the surrounding schools and orphanages. Many of the kids they met lived in poverty, without any family, or even the basic necessities. “Even with nothing,” Lauren explained, “they always had smiles on their faces. They have so little, yet they are grateful for everything they do have.” The highlight of Matt’s trip was the time spent playing with these kids. “Although they did not have much material wealth, they has so much happiness in being together,” says Matt. “More than what we often see here in Canada. They all acted as one big family.” The Dominican Experience trip was not designed to save those in poverty in the D.R., although the students did donate and help in the sugar cane fields and at the orphanage during their week stay. “The whole purpose of the trip was to teach us to look outside of life in Canada and see the world in a new perspective,” explained Matt. Organizers suggested the participants keep their minds, eyes, and hearts open while on the trip. “It really changes you,” said Nathalie. “You come out with a new appreciation for every-

As part of Waste Management’s commitment to communicating with its neighbours, the Company has established the Carp Road Landfill Community Liaison Committee (CLCLC) to provide members of the community the opportunity to question, comment and provide suggestions on Waste Management’s landfill facility and operations on Carp Road. The mission of the CLCLC is to serve as the key (but not exclusive) forum to address in an unbiased way issues with and between the community and Waste Management on all aspects of current and past operations as well as future developments at the WM Ottawa Facility /Landfill Site.

Hey you! Yes you, driving off in your minivan with the tinted windows. Don’t think that that glass protects you, because buddy, my eyes are drilling a hole into your back seat right now. The same backseat where, moments ago, lay several large, black, plastic Glad bags, tied tightly and stuffed to their breaking point. Where are those bags now? They are in my yard. I happen to be one of many Kanata residents whose neighbourhood isn’t exactly suburban. To paint the picture, there are trees around my house. Trees, and swamps, and even a couple honestto-goodness farms. The most telling stuck-between-the-townhouses-andthe-countryside feature, however, is the wide array of vast fields- endless spaces of greyish tall grass, dainty milkweed pods, and deep, murky puddles. Oh, and did I mention the field’s most common inhabitant, the shy, brown, Timminus Hortonex, often referred to as the Tim Horton’s Coffee Cup?

The CLCLC is formed of representatives from the Company, City Council, the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) and neighbouring community residents. The committee usually meets monthly. More information on the CLCLC can be found on our website at www.clclc.ca. The CLCLC is currently recruiting new members to serve as community representatives. If you are interested in participating in the CLCLC, please submit a brief resume that includes a short summary of your interest in being on the committee by May 31st.

Driving along any stretch of old highway offers the same view. Beautiful, wild meadows, littered with Big Mac wrappers, double-double lids, and the occasional Frosty cup. But you know what? Maybe these all fluttered from the top of a nearby garbage can. It’s possible- unlikely- but still possible. Besides, there is an evil far worse than these bits and pieces of trash. Meet the predators of the grassy lots: Garbagus Baggius, Smellius Loveseaticus, and an annual terror, Yuletidus Rex: commonly known as, garbage bags, old furniture, and Christmas trees. For some strange reason, some people who do not live near fields or woodlands seem to carry a total disregard for the natural world. Rather than carrying their trash off to junkyards or, heaven forbid, paying a fee for bringing in old tires, these people would prefer to drive out into the tantalizing seclusion of the countryside and dump their waste, possibly while humming the theme music to The Grinch. They seem to have forgotten that Homo sapiens like themselves inhabit

this area, that we are forced to stare at their junk and cart it off at our own expense. They have forgotten, or perhaps they have decided we are a curious other species, one who lives in constant fear of dishwashers and colour television. How can we fix this disgusting problem? I suggest doing what humans have always done when faced with the threat of invading species: introduce more dangerous predators. If you were a misguided litterer intending to dump a rusty 1996 refrigerator in the tangled greens of a meadow, wouldn’t the roar of a nearby mountain lion make you think twice? Better yet, we could introduce a new version of To Catch a Predator, one in which the rugged host sets up secret cameras to catch lawn chair dumpers in the act. A little public humiliation ought to change their tune, no? Enough talk. I am putting my foot down, and I would really like to not be stepping on discarded snow chains as I do. The earth is not your garbage can, and my lawn is not your litter box.

The world high jump record, set back in 1993, stands at 2.45 metres. Grade 11 student Leeson Guay is climbing towards that record quickly. Leeson is a natural athlete. A competitive soccer player, he only started jumping competitively in 2008. When the snow starts to melt and it begins to warm up, Lesson knows it’s time to start training. Lesson finished with an impressive performance in 2010 at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) placing second among all of Ontario’s competitors. His highest jump is currently 1.90 metres set at last year’s competition. Although an almost two meter jump for a 16 year old is pretty impressive, Leeson intends to go much further. “My goal is to always try my hardeest. This year will be a challenge, but my training has helped my technique enough that I should be able to compete.” During the winter, Leeson trains two to three times a week in a gym. He is confident in his abilities and believes he will hit the two-metre mark at this years OFSAA games in Sudbury. To make it to the finals on June 2, Leeson must place in the top three at the regionals in Ottawa and the eastern regionals before going against some of the top high jump competitors in all of Canada. Leeson says he sometimes practices at heights of 2.1 metres, only 35 centimetres shy of the world record – a pretty impressive feat for someone who has only been practicing for a few years. High jump is not the only event Leeson is attempting on the track. The 4 x 100 metre relay is another passion. Being able to run 100 metres in under 11 seconds makes him a great addition to the team. Although Leeson has yet to claim the gold medal at the OFSAA high jump, his competitive edge and ability to learn quickly have given him a good

Cassandra Gallo

Leeson Guay hopes that a competitive edge and hard work will give him the jump on his competitors. chance at this year’s games. This win would be a minor accomplishment for the man that are to come for this young athlete given his tremendous potential. Javier Sotomayer was 26 years-old when he jumped for the world record in 1993. Tens years and the height of one ordinary ruler now separates Leeson Guay from attempting that record and possibly becoming one of the best high jumpers in the world.

Cheers went up and glasses were raised in a toast when it was announced on Thursday, May 12, that Stittsville’s own Plush Garden was chosen to open for Sloan at the Canada Day in Kanata celebration. After four years of vying for the opening slot at the event, Adam Traversy, Skyler Radmore, Greg Higgins and Shawn Baldwin scored the coveted position. “We’re pretty stoked,” said Traversy, 22. “We’ve always wanted that.” Diane McNulty, the director of programming for Canada Day in Kanata, said she felt the band was ready to play to crowds of upwards of 30,000 people. “They’re amazingly good,” she said. “I’ve been watching their career for four years. Every year they get better and better; it wasn’t a difficult decision at all.” The Canadian band Sloan, which is headlining the event, had to review Plush Garden’s material and give the final OK. “There was no issue,” said McNulty.

Stittsville band Plush Garden is opening for major headlining act Sloan at this year’s Canada Day in Kanata celebration. “Not only did Diane have the good taste to select you (Plush Garden) but so did Sloan,” said Tim Power in a toast to the band. With experience playing shows in Ottawa, Kingston, Toronto and Pickering, this will be the largest crowd Plush Garden

has played to date. “Playing for a big audience, that’s a plus,” said Higgins, 21. “We’re really stoked to play with Sloan.” The four-piece rock ‘n’ roll band is looking forward to kicking off the night. “We want to do something fun,

have a party” said Radmore, 21. “Canada’s awesome,” echoed Baldwin, 21. “It’s going to be a party.” YOUTH BANDS Every year, the event promotes local youth acts to help them

along in their musical careers. “We’ve always had a youth band open for them (the headliners),” said McNulty. “It’s definitely a pretty good notch in their resume.” Past bands that have opened for headlining acts for Canada Day in Kanata include Amos The Transparent, Epiphane and Open Sky. “When you look at all the bands we’ve had open for headliners they’ve all done really well,” said McNulty. “One of our main goals is to showcase the local talent.” She said it was an easy choice when sifting through over 20 bands that applied for the opening time slot. “They totally blew me away,” she said about Plush Garden. “They’re just amazing musicians and really nice people. For us it’s really exciting to give the young bands the opportunity (to play).” Other locals bands playing the event are Go Long! and Open Sky. McNulty said the committee for Canada Day in Kanata is still looking for sponsors to help fund the event. For more information, visit www.canadadayinkanata.com.

Kanata Theatre youth present Mulan Jr. KANATA THEATRE The youth of Kanata Theatre are traveling back to the legendary story-telling days of ancient China to bring an action-packed version of Disney’s Mulan to the stage June 3 and 4. Based on the 1998 animated film, Mulan Jr. is set in ancient China during the Hun invasion. The musical tells the tale of the tomboy Mulan who disguises herself as a soldier to save her aged father from fighting in the war. The Ancestors send the mischievous dragon Mushu to protect Mulan and help her on her journey. Together with Captain Shang and his ragtag army, they must try to save the Emperor. Packed with humour and such favourite songs as “Reflection” and “I’ll Make a Man Out of You,” Mulan Jr. will warm your heart and have you cheering. KT Kids began as a 10-week experiment six years ago when a handful of the children of Kanata Theatre members were invited to attended weekly semi-

nars on various aspects of stage production. Under the helm of Andrew Williams who is also directing this play, the group has flourished into a troupe of 35 talented youth and now includes members from Carp and Stittsville. Kanata’s Jackie Kormylo, 13, appears in the title role of Mulan. A three year veteran of KT Kids she has performed in Honk Jr. and last year’s Dear Edwina as well as Kanata Theatre’s Christmas production of Seussical. Mulan’s sidekick Mushu is being brought to life by 11year-old Abbey Flockton, also of Kanata. Shows are Friday, June 3 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, June 4 at 2 p.m. at Ron Maslin Playhouse. All tickets are $5. To order call the box office at 613-831-4435 (leave a message, all calls will be returned). Submitted Photo

If Jesus were to appear in our community today, right now, where would he go to meet people and talk to them? Where do they tend to hang out? Why, the mall of course. Glen Cairn United Church is setting its May 28 production of the musical Godspell in a mall, with a fountain as the set’s centrepiece, symbolising the water of life and a meeting point for people. “They’re all there looking for that good life – new clothes, new television, new stuff,” said director Sandra Copeland. “They’re there for the right reason – looking for a better life – but they don’t know how to proceed. Jesus helps them see that that newness they’re seeking is somewhere else.” Godspell tells the story of Jesus from the time of his baptism to his crucifixion, concentrating on bringing his parables to life. The disciples, who transform through the show from a ragtag bunch of strangers into devoted followers, take on many roles each as they act out the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son, the Pharisees and the Tax Gatherer, the Stoning of the Woman and more. “Many people have an image of the bible as stuffy,” she said. “Yet a lot of it is so simple and joyful and hopeful. “ Copeland has loved Godspell ever since it first appeared on Broadway in 1972. She’s seen half a dozen productions of it and acted in it three times. The joyful, upbeat music is a major drawing card for her. “It captures the nitty-gritty of life. The words are simple and the meanings are easy to grasp.” The music will be performed by mem-

bers of the church’s senior choir, youth choir and men’s chorus. Many productions of Godspell cast young adults in the roles of disciples. But the Glen Cairn United production has cast members and singers ranging in age from 10 to 60-something. “The motley mix of ages and stages would be a better representation of the people Jesus met,” she said. “You lose something when it’s all energetic 18 year olds.” Another unusual twist is that Jesus is played by a 15-year-old young woman, Rachel Davies. “I really like the fact that Jesus is a woman,” said Copeland. “Rachel brings out those non-gender universal qualities of strength and compassion. Her voice is deep and strong. It helps our minds move beyond, to an understanding that God isn’t male and it isn’t about gender.” Godspell, and especially Glen Cairn United’s production of it, offers a new way of looking at the world. “It was staggeringly unusual for the time,” Copeland explained. “No other leaders had ever done that. They were in the temples, ensconced in rich robes. Jesus, if he came today, might not come to the cathedrals and churches but to where people are in everyday life. The mall officials would likely call security!” Don’t miss Godspell on Sat. May 28 at 7 p.m. at Glen Cairn United Church, 140 Abbeyhill Dr. in Kanata. Tickets cost $15 for adults, $12 for students and seniors, and $45 for a family; they are available by calling the church office at 613-836-4756. The performance is presented through special arrangement with Theatre Maximus.

Trinity Presbyterian Church offers handbell workshop

Bridlewood community association springs into May

TRINITY HILLTOP RINGERS

BRIDLEWOOD COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

The Trinity Hilltop Ringers are holding a handbell workshop at Trinity Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 28. This event is intended for individuals who have never rung handbells before and who are interested in trying out this very unique way of making music with an ensemble. The workshop will take place at the church on 110 McCurdy Dr., from 1 to 2:30 p.m. There is no charge to participate. If this sounds like an ap-pealing opportunity to you, please email karen@kobierski. com or call Karen at 613-254-5977 for more information or to sign up. If you enjoy making music with other people and think that handbell ringing sounds interesting, the handbell choir of Trinity Presbyterian Church invites you to an upcoming workshop. While it is not a requirement that you have ever heard a handbell choir before, it is important to have a basic ability to read

One of the more unusual ensemble instruments is handbells. In a handbell choir, each individual is entrusted with a select set of bells which they must ring at the precisely right time in accordance with the music being performed. There are two opportunities

in May to hear handbell choirs. On May 15, Rideau Park United Church, 2203 Alta Vista Dr., will host a wonderful spring massed handbell and chimes concert featuring groups from five Ottawa churches including the Trinity Hilltop Ringers. This concert takes place at 7 p.m. A little closer to home, the Trinity Hilltop Ringers will be participating at both the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. services at Trinity Presbyterian Church on Sunday, May 29.

In loving memory of our brother Rory who passed away one year ago May 22, 2010.

RORY BRADLEY Nov 24, 1955 - May 22, 2010

Hard to image a year has passed. A year full of one day’s at a time. Sometimes, one hour at a time. Rory was our pillar of strength and protection and also our soft place to land. The sense of loss to the children and myself is still immense. We are, however, extremely grateful to belong to such a caring community. Your continued thoughts and enquiries of our well being continue to help heal and still make a difference. The children and I thank you! If you get there before I do, don’t give up on me. I’ll see you when my chores are through. I’m not sure how long I’ll be. But I’m not going to let you down. Darling, wait and see. So, until now and then, till I see you again, I’ll be loving you Love “ME” Carolyn Dad, forever in our hearts and memory! Tara (Justin), Joel, Courtney & Brooke CL24612

WEDDINGS, BAPTISMS & Funerals, location of your choice. Also available small weddings, my home, weekdays. The Rev. Alan Gallichan. 613726-0400.

Remember him with a smile today, He was not one for tears, Reflect instead on memories, Of all the happy years. Recall to mind the way he spoke, And all the things he said, His strength, his stance, the way he walked, Remember these instead. The good advice he’d give us. His eyes that shone with laughter, So much of him will never die, But live on ever after. Love Deb, Kevin, Brent, Jill & families CL24591
