West-end residents will be seeing floodprevention measures starting as early as the end of the summer as the City of Ottawa begins rolling out its flooding action plan. The plan is the culmination of almost
three years of analysis and engineering the city undertook after the devastating 2009 floods in the west end, including Glen Cairn and Stittsville. While some interim solutions have already begun to be implemented, the bulk of the $32-million in flood-proofing measures will now begin, following council’s May 25
approval of the plan. “This has been a two-year journey,” said Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley following the May 25 council meeting. “Today is the start of what we’ll call the ‘shovel stage,’” said Hubley. FLOOD FIXES, see 4

A crane lowers the roof of St. Isidore in three sections.

Parishioners and onlookers watch as a construction crew installs a roof on St. Isidore Roman Catholic Church on Wednesday, May 25.
St. Isidore starts to take shape Father Virgil Amirthakumar smiled as he watched construction workers install the new roof at St. Isidore Catholic Church on Wednesday, May 25. A crowd of parishioners and onlookers joined the parish priest as they watched the new church on March Road start to take a familiar shape. “I’m so excited,” said Father Amirthakumar. “Everything is on schedule so we can celebrate mass in Christmas. “With a roof on it, it looks like a church now.” It’s been over a year since St. Isidore’s parish voted to tear down the original 125-year-old building and replace it with a larger, modern church. The total cost of the project is $5.5 million, with $2.6 million of that coming in the form of a loan from the church archdiocese and $2.8 million raised by the parish. “By the time the church is open we’ll be at $2.8 million,” said Des Adam, a deacon of St. Isidore. “And that’s in less than four years.” Nobody wanted to tear down the original church, Adam said in an earlier interview with the Kourier-Standard, but keeping it would have cost $7 million. Renovating St. Isidore would have only preserved part of the
way of life in the former rural March township. But the church’s parish had been waiting for three years to tear down the dilapidated building and build a new one for its rapidly expanding congregation. The church was bursting at the seams, serving more than 1,400 families in a building that seats 250 people. During the church’s construction, parishioners have been attending mass at the church’s hall, located next to St. Isidore, which seats 300 people, and at All Saints Catholic High School in Kanata Lakes. TAKING SHAPE
LONG WAIT It took a long time to win approval to tear down the church. In 2009, the City of Ottawa’s local architecture conservation authority, made up of volunteers, voted 14 to 0 to approve heritage designation for St. Isidore, which would have prevented the parish’s plan to demolish the building. But the plan was rejected when it moved up the ladder to the city’s agriculture and rural affairs committee later that year. City heritage staff said the church, built in 1885, was a rare example of the work of notable priest-architect George Bouillon and a valuable reminder of the
Watching the new church take shape is very exciting, said Adam. “It’s been a long time in the planning process and the building process,” he said, as he watched a crane hang over onethird of St. Isidore’s new roof. “It’s a very significant day for the church.” Jane St. Denis, a parishioner, had mixed feelings as she stood with a mix of onlookers and watched as the roof was lowered into place. “It’s very moving. I was here when the old church was here,” she said. “But we obviously need to move on. We’re working for the future, our children and grandchildren.”

125-year-old building. The parish removed the church’s steeple two years ago over safety concerns – debris from the decaying structure had fallen to the ground twice that year, landing on the front entrance. Construction on the new building started last September. The church hired Ralph Vanderberg, the same architect who designed St. Paul’s Anglican Church, located on Young’s Road in Katimavik. The parish wanted the new church to use stones from the original building, the bell and the stained glass windows.

Staff picket outside Glen Cairn retirement home BLAIR EDWARDS Pierre Lalonde joins a picket outside Kanata Place retirement residence in Glen Cairn on Wednesday, May 25.
blair.edwards@metroland.com
Nursing, housekeeping and kitchen staff picketed a Glen Cairn retirement home on Wednesday, May 25, to protest plans to cut the wages and hours of 28 employees starting in June. The changes at Kanata Place retirement residence violates the collective bargaining agreement negotiated between the company, Revera Retirement and CAW Union, Local 830, said the local’s president, Elaine Walker. “They’re not doing it properly,” she said. “They’re not following the collective agreement.” Brenda Crossman, a dietary aide at the retirement home, said the changes will move her from full-time to part-time hours. “I lose my benefits, dental, medical; I lose sick days; I lose clothing allowance,” she said. “There’s been changes over the years but this is over the top.” A few of the roughly 100 residents joined the picket, including Pierre Lalonde, 62. “I’m concerned about the cutting of hours and the service we’re going to be getting,” he said. Colleen Allen, executive director of the residence, said Revera is “continually evolving its approach to delivery of quality care to our seniors. From time to time staffing changes are necessary.” Allen would not comment on whether the staffing changes are permissible within the collective agreement nor on how many of the 28 employees will be full-time once the changes are complete. Life is just ducky at Roland Michener Public School blair.edwards@metroland.com

Stephanie Nugent was never one to duck a challenge. But lately, she has been run ragged with the addition of 21 youngsters to her Grade 1 class at Roland Michener Public School. “I’ve more than doubled the size of my class,” said Nugent. “Seventeen students and 21 ducklings.” Carmine, Sprinkles, Rainbow, Rudy and the rest of the fluffy horde have been nothing but hungry, energetic and bursting with curiosity ever since they hatched in Nugent’s classroom. It all started last month, when Nugent accepted duck eggs from an office administrator at Stittsville Public School, who owns a farm in Stittsville. Nugent’s students named the eggs and watched them incubate and hatch in the class-
room. “They’ve named all the eggs, but it’s almost impossible (to distinguish them) after that,” said Nugent. Nugent also allowed children from other classes at Roland Michener to watch the eggs hatch. The teacher has turned the care of the ducklings into a learning experience, crafting the subjects of ducks and their life-cycle into her teaching plan. The students are allowed, with their parents’ permission, to bring a few of the ducklings home with them on select nights. Every day, the children feed and water the ducklings, which once they are two weeks old will return to the farm in Stittsville. Sometimes they bring them outside for a morning romp – but keeping the fuzzy clan together can be difficult when the ducklings stampede in a random direction across the
613-229-9977 playground. Several students keep watchful eyes on one particularly mischievous duckling. “Carmine! Carmine!” they shout when the duckling waddles quickly from the pack. All of the children seem to agree that raising a herd of ducks has been a great learning experience.

Here are a few Tips to be Sun smart: •Limit sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. •Seek shade. If there is no shade, create your own with an umbrella. •Wear a wide-brimmed hat and clothing that covers your arms and legs. •Wear sunglasses that provide UVA and UVB protection. •Apply sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Look for a broadspectrum product that provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Choose a higher SPF if you will be spending longer periods of time outdoors, if you have fair skin, or if your doctor recommends it. •Women who are pregnant and those taking oral contraceptives may be at risk for darker pigmentation on the cheeks and forehead (“pregnancy mask”). If you are in this group, use a sunscreen with SPF 30 that has both UVA and UVB protection. •If you feel you must have a tan, use a self-tanning cream or bronzer, but remember that self-tanning products do not provide sun protection. •Check the UV index daily and take appropriate precautions. This information is readily available online.

Grab your helmet and get on a bike
S
ummer is here and it’s time to enjoy being outdoors. If you’re riding your bike to get to work or to simply have fun, make sure you protect your head by wearing a helmet that fits you properly. Falls can happen even if you’re a good cyclist. A number of things can make you crash: a car might cut you off, a dog might run out in front of you, or your tire might hit a crack in the road. Each year, about 1,500 people go to a hospital emergency room in Ottawa because of a cycling injury. Of all sports and recreation activities, cycling is the number one reason people visit the emergency room or are admitted to the hospital. Furthermore, many of these injuries are to the head. In Ottawa, there are about 357 emergency room visits each year because of a head injury from cycling. Head injuries can result in damage to the brain and can even cause death. Brain injury continues to be one of the leading causes of death and disability in North America. It can happen to anyone, young or old, during a variety of activities. Brain injury can have life altering consequences on the person injured, and
is now recognized to cause significant distress for family and friends of the person injured. Each year over 5,000 children in Canada experience brain injury from bicycle accidents. Brain injury can happen to both genders, young or old, in a variety of settings. Brain injury in Canada is a significant issue, for people with injury, families, friends and others trying to provide their care. The good news is you can prevent many of these injuries by wearing a helmet. Putting on a helmet and making sure it fits properly is easy to do if you follow the 2V1 rule: your helmet should fit on top of your head with two finger widths between the eyebrows and the top edge of the helmet; your straps should form a ‘V’ shape right below the ears, which keeps the helmet from moving forward and backward or from side to side; clip the straps together tightly so only one finger fits between the chin and the strap. Everyone under the age of 18 must wear a certified helmet while cycling. Good examples for parents to set is to always wear one, regardless of the trek. Then your children will learn from your good example.

A growing list of the things that annoy you
I
was thinking the other day about something that annoyed me – it might have been music piped out onto the street from shopping centres and stores; is anybody listening, and is it more depressing if someone is? Or it might have been the Internet. In fact, that’s probably what it was. The thing that is most annoying about the Internet is that it consists largely of people being annoyed. You get annoyed with it after a while. Everybody on the Internet is annoyed about something. Entire websites and Facebook pages are devoted to people hating something or someone. There is nothing new about annoyed people trying to make their annoyances public. There have always been chronic letter-to-the-editor writers. There have always been people who tape messages to telephone poles or put signs up in front of their houses or call in to openline radio shows. But this is the first time people have had the ability to broadcast their annoyances to the entire world. And they are taking advantage of it like crazy. Not all of them are doing it constructively. Read the comments
KANATA
CHARLES GORDON Funny Town section underneath a story on a news site and see how bad-tempered people can be. Few of the comments have much to do with the particular article, but they’ll give you a pretty good idea what’s bugging the writer. Check the online comments about restaurants and hotels, particularly ones that you have visited and enjoyed. You won’t believe how much misery they could have inflicted on their would-be critics. Entire nations suffer at the hands of the annoyed ones. Have a look at the online reviews on travel pages. People will tell you not to visit certain countries – not because they are unsafe or totalitarian or disease ridden, but because the writer experienced a lumpy bed or had a lukewarm cup of coffee.

You could do this too, and to be sure, it’s tempting. Are you annoyed, say, at those hockey fans in the expensive seats who pound on the glass whenever the puck is in their vicinity? Well, you can let the entire world know. You don’t have to count on the editor printing your letter or the open-line producer accepting your call. You just put your blog on line and let everyone know that pounding on the glass is not among the reasons we were put here on Earth. Many people will thank you for it, although they will do so privately. Online, people will just question your right to have an opinion. Being publicly annoyed is a growth industry and it will only continue to grow as an increasingly complex world creates more annoyances for more people and as the ranks of the retired increase, providing a larger pool of people with the time to blog. They might blog about those new stoplights that are only stoplights for some drivers. For the other drivers, they are stop signs. For every driver, there is confusion. There is going to be some serious crashing at one of those, you might say in your blog. Then other people will call you an idiot.

If there is a saving grace for those concerned with all this negativity, it is that a most of the stuff on the Internet is barely seen. There is so much stuff out there that most of it is read only by those who write it and their immediate families. So, while it is technically correct that a comment can be seen by the entire world, it isn’t, unless it is about Justin Bieber. There is no law, of course, that says that you have to obsess online with what annoys you. You could be positive, propose a solution to one of the world’s problems. If you do, more power to you. Just be prepared for people to snarl at you in the Comments section.

Canada Day in Kanata offers exciting entertainment JESSICA CUNHA jessica.cunha@metroland.com
Canada Day in Kanata will offer families an exciting mix of entertainment throughout the day-long event on July 1 at Walter Baker Park. With crowds of 35,000 to 40,000 people expected to descend on the area, Theresa Morin, president of Canada Day in Kanata, said the event will be even better than those in past years. “Bigger and better every year, that’s our goal,” she said. “It’s home, it’s your community, it’s our community and it’s your opportunity to have some fun and not spend all your time in the car coming and going,” said Morin regarding the commute to other festivities around the city. Entertainment and activities include: • The Hazeldean Mall Crossing Bridge Square Family Fun Zone, with inflatable bouncy castles, face painting and a craft tent. • An energetic and interactive puppet show for all ages by Rock the Arts, a local puppet master troupe. • Photo opportunities with enchanted princesses and daring superheroes, provided by Enchanted Entertainment. • A chemistry magic show put on by Carleton University that includes flames, explosions, and disappearing spoons, for ages 4 and up. • Demonstrations by Canadian Sport Martial Arts Academy showcasing training and state-of-the-art techniques. The CSMA will also bring back the Tug of War Challenge. • The Midway with various amusement park rides. • Mini putt and paintball target shooting. • Demonstrations of popular fitness classes, such as Zumba and Groove, by Capital MissFits. • Performances by the Holy Trinity Catholic High School Rhythm and Blues Band. • Yoga demonstrations of balance, strength and flexibility by Mountaingoat Yoga Centre. • The chance to try and tame JED the mechanical bull. • Musical acts by local bands Go Long (!), Open Sky and Plush Garden. • Headliner Sloan will finish off the entertainment just before fireworks light up the night sky. The Market Place will also be a returning fixture where local- and home-based
businesses can offer their services and products. “You’re supporting local entertainers and artists as well as local businesses,” said Morin.

GOING GREEN This year, Morin said the Canada Day in Kanata event will continue to support making an effort to reduce waste and carbon dioxide emissions. Last year, the committee reached an estimated 60 per cent diversion rate, 10 per cent higher than its goal. “We’re continuing with those initiatives,” she said. “Our goal is to reduce our footprint as much as possible every year.” The event is encouraging attendees to “get there green and leave it clean.” “You can walk or bike,” said Morin. “We have supervised bike parking on site so you don’t have to spend all that time trying to get downtown and you’re contributing to our greening initiative.” Compost stations will be set up around the site to collect organic waste Food vendors will be using compostable containers and there will be water stations available to refill reusable water bottles. VOLUNTEERS & SPONSORS NEEDED Last year, event organizers were unsure if 2010 would be the last celebration due to a lack of funding. Morin said they are still looking for sponsors to help with this year’s event. “This is a 100 per cent sponsor and volunteer driven event,” she said. She added they are also looking for volunteers, ages 14 and up, to help run the festivities and ensure the event goes off as planned. “It’s a great opportunity for families to volunteer together for a shift,” said Morin. Volunteers are needed to man the greening initiatives, the family fun zone, the main stage and the set up and tear down of the structures. A volunteer orientation and registration day will be held at the Lion Dick Brule Community Centre, at 170 Castlefrank Rd., from 7 to 9 p.m. on June 15. Interested people are encouraged to go to the website and download the application forms and waivers to help speed up the process, said Morin. She added people can sign up on the website to volunteer up until July 1. For more information, visit the website at www.canadadayinkanata.com.

To the editor, The NCC held public consultations on three preliminary land use concepts it has developed for the National Capital Greenbelt on May 24, 26 and June 1. While there are praiseworthy elements in these concepts, they fail to respond to the very green vision adopted last November by the NCC’s board of directors. “For the most part, the concepts merely tinker with the margins of the existing Greenbelt,” said Sol Shuster, chair of the Greenbelt Coalition for Canada’s Capital Region. “The suggested action is good for, at best, the next 5 to 10 years. Where is the 50-year vision?” “When John Diefenbaker established the Greenbelt, it was based on a broad, visionary concept of the National Capital,” said Donna
DuBreuil, a coalition member. “Similarly, what we need now is a comprehensive ecological vision of the connecting parts, as well as the whole. Given the enormous pressures exerted by the city for more roads, by developers for subdivisions and by other federal departments for new facilities, it is vital to identify all the areas that need protection, otherwise there will be nothing left to protect.” The coalition is particularly concerned by the complete omission of an option to embrace the South March Highlands in at least one of the NCC’s land use concepts, by the lack of detail in land that could be deleted from or added to the Greenbelt, and by the lack of substance underlying the proposed idea of ecological corridors. “We expect the NCC to demonstrate strong leadership to ensure the long term health and expansion of the Greenbelt and all the natural areas that form the Capital Region’s
unique Emerald Necklace,” Shuster said. The Greenbelt Coalition ***

The last dance Inspiring teacher steps down after 10 years JESSICA CUNHA jessica.cunha@metroland.com
A Kanata-area instructor is stepping down after her 10-year tenure as dance teacher at All Saints Catholic High School. Ann Marie Vanneste has influenced hundreds of students with her talent for teaching and passion for dance, including this reporter. As my Grade 10 dance teacher at Holy Trinity Catholic High School, where Vanneste taught the class for two years before moving to All Saints, she taught with a flourish and enthusiasm that is only evident in instructors who love their work. Vanneste drove the class of around 15 girls – some who had taken dance lessons for years and others who had never heard of a

pirouette – to achieve the highest standard possible. And in the end, everyone looked good. I still have memories of performing a fun little number with five of my peers at a dance showcase at St. Paul’s Catholic High School. What a rush that day was with matching costumes, hair and makeup. It’s her ability to turn even the smallest performance into something grand that make Vanneste stand out. “If you’re going to do it right, do it big,” said Vanneste who drives to the United States to pick out the costumes for her students. “That makes them feel really important. “At the end of the day the kids feel like they’re at a real show.” CURTAIN CLOSES The hot-pink walls of the dance classroom are covered in photographs of various students dancing and performing over the last decade, while a glittery backboard used for the stage lends a touch of Broadway glamour. “I’ve been blessed to have done

Ann Marie Vanneste choreographed a wheelchair dance long before Glee was on the air. She said the experience was one of the most memorable during her decade of teaching dance at All Saints Catholic High School. this for the last 10 years,” said Vanneste, adding it will be hard for her to give it all up. “If it was two years ago I don’t think I could have stepped back. “But it’s time to pass on my baton.” She wants to challenge herself by teaching new subjects and exploring new avenues within All Saints. “When you get comfortable, are you doing your very best?” she asked. “This is the end under my wing.” Something that has made the transition a little easier for her was
the success of the 10th annual Dance Extravaganza held on May 3 at All Saints. “I’m most proud of this one,” said Vanneste, who organized over two hours of dance and performances with 39 acts for the yearend showcase. The show included all the dancers from grades 9 to 12 who took her dance class, the after school dance program Vanneste runs for grades 7 and 8 students, and 19 male students with no formal training who agreed to be a part of the finale. “I wanted to finish on a high,” she said. SPECIAL PERFORMACE The senior students in the dance class put on a surprise number for Vanneste to show her how much she’s meant to them over the years. “Our year end show was really emotional. The seniors in the class actually did a surprise dance for her this year. She had no idea,” said Grade 12 student Mercedes Wightman. “She said as a dance teacher it was the most rewarding thing.” The 18-year-old from All Saints has
been under Vanneste’s instruction from Grade 7 through to her graduating year. “She’s always thinking about how she can make everyone feel so good,” said Wightman, whether it’s the dance moves or the costumes. Having taken formal dance lessons since she was seven-years-old, she said Vanneste’s ability to choreograph routines that suit all students’ level of dance ability is something that makes her stand out as an instructor. “She uses moves that make everyone look good,” said Wightman, who is set to begin a professional career dancing for the Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines on a seven-month contract. “She is fantastic. She is such a good choreographer. She always puts on the best shows. “We have friends from other schools come to watch.” Wightman added that Vanneste will be missed in the school’s dance community. “She is by far the best teacher I’ve ever had. She really is caring towards her students,” she said. “I think it would be very safe to say that she will be very much missed. She’s just been such a huge impact on all our lives.” Monique Nadeau, a former dance student of Vanneste’s was invited to be a part of the Dance Extravaganza this year. After graduating in 2004, Nadeau now sings opera and musical theatre professionally. “I was able to watch quite a few of the dancers before my number,” said Nadeau, who lives in Beaverbrook. “Some of them were just incredible. It was just great to see them do their stuff.” She said Vanneste was able to boost a persons’ mood no matter what the circumstances. “From my experience, I would say she’s probably one of the strongest people I’ve ever met, inside and out,” said Nadeau. It’s been really rewarding to see them grow up and to work with them. “You just do what you do because you love it. She said she’s been very lucky with the school’s administration for being supportive of the showcases over the years. “What other school lets all their students get out of class and watch dance for two hours? she said. “I’m very lucky. Now that the curtain is closing on Vanneste’s 10-year run as a dance teacher she said she’s looking forward to what the future has in store. “When we took the final bow, there wasn’t one part of me that had any regrets.

Before the hit show Glee came on the air, Vanneste choreographed an entire routine in wheelchairs. Three years ago, she had a student in a wheelchair sign up for her dance class. When she asked him why he signed up for a dance class, he said because he enjoyed it, said Vanneste. So she rented enough wheelchairs for everyone in the class and set about choreographing a dance routine. “I had to tape everyone’s legs together, she said. “I didn’t think it was fair since he couldn’t use his that the other students could. She said it was one of the most challenging pieces she ever put together, but also one of the most rewarding. “That certainly was a highlight, said Vanneste. This year, she also managed to create a piece she’s been working on for years. Vanneste created a story to Celine Dion’s Mother’s Prayer, of three little girls growing up and graduating and thanking their mothers for their guidance. “I wanted to do it for the past eight years but I needed the right girls. This year, she found them in Grade 12 students Wightman, Amy Carter and

El-Chantiry not running for CMM in provincial election DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
With a little over four months left until the provincial election, there is still no one willing to take on Progressive Con-
servative Carleton-Mississippi Mills candidate Jack MacLaren in the Oct. 6 vote. Eli El-Chantiry, the city councillor local politicos were urging to challenge landowner rights activist MacLaren in the
race to succeed veteran MPP Norm Sterling, ended speculation on May 27. “I will not be running in the upcoming provincial election and seeking a seat in the Ontario Legislature for the riding
of Carleton-Mississippi Mills,” El-Chantiry said in a press release. “In October 2010 I was reelected as city councillor and received a mandate to represent the constituents of West
Carleton-March. I strongly believe that it would be inappropriate to break the trust that my residents have in me by stepping away from my responsibilities as city councillor.”

Paul McDonough remembers the morning his principal scared him. It was the day after he had been named one of Ottawa’s top teachers at The Capital Educators Awards held at Algonquin College on May 19. The robotics and technology teacher walked into All Saints Catholic High School and was met by the school’s principal, Brid McDonald. The proud principal announced her intention to mention the achievement over the PA during the school’s morning announcements. “Well I’m going to hide under my desk,” warned a bashful McDonough. “No, don’t do that,” said McDonald. “I’m going to do it anyway,” replied McDonough. All modesty aside, McDonough said he was honoured by the award. “It was actually quite unexpected,” he said. “When they announced it at the gala it was kind of surprising.” The annual Edugala awards, run by the Ottawa-Carleton Learning Foundation, with the support of the Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation, celebrate the best teachers across the city from kindergarten to university. McDonough, who has taught at All Saints since 2003, has a background in architectural design. “I didn’t think I’d be teaching students
about robotics,” he said. But the principles of design are the same whether the subject is architecture or robotics, he added. “I love teaching my robotics course,” said McDonough. “It’s labour intensive, but I enjoy it the most. “My philosophy is to try and include everyone and to demonstrate all students can be successful no matter what they do,” he said. And the students usually rise to the occasion. “It’s very hands-on learning,’ McDonough said. McDonough teaches robotics and controls and construction technology courses to grades 11 and 12 students as well as technological design to grades 10, 11 and 12 students. But some enthusiasts can get a head start in the study of robotics, he added. Every year, McDonough invites grades 7, 8, 9 and 10 students to join the school’s robotics team, a club that learns how to construct robots. The club meets after school twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. “During the build season of robots they’re there until midnight,” said McDonough. The All Saints robotics and control course, introduced into the curriculum in 2009, is unique to the city, said McDonough. Students learn how to build robots from

scratch and compete in two competitions: the Ontario Skills Robotics Competition and First Robotics, an international competition. “It’s very satisfying to see a student – with the excepting of using Google – with no technical skills flourish and be successful in designing some very sophisticated robots,” said McDonough. Newcomers to the course have no idea what to expect, he added. “When I tell them they’re going to make all these robots, they’re like, ‘Holy cow,’” he said. “But later they say, ‘Oh wow. I did that.’” And McDonough’s students enjoy the added benefits of his endof-class jokes. “I have a large number of jokes that I use and for the large part they are on the corny side,” said McDonough with a laugh. The high school teacher invites employees of Ottawa’s technology companies, such as Wind River Technologies and Design First, to mentor the students. McDonough’s students use their new-found skills to help out in their community. Last year, the robotics students designed and built a robot to dance in the school’s rock-a-thon, and raised $2,000 to benefit the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. Robots could make an attractive addition to any fundraiser, said McDonough, whether it’s at the golf course or on the dance floor.

NCC takes comments on greenbelt study JENNIFER MCINTOSH jennifer.mcintosh@metroland.com
Wether their cause was adding the Leitrim Wetlands or the South March Highlands, residents urged consultants to take a more proactive approach on planning for the Greenbelt at a public consultation held at the Nepean Sportsplex on May 26. “My community has greatly benefitted from access to the greenbelt,” said Gord Henderson, president of the Beaverbrook Community Association. “And my heart is committed to the preservation of the South March Highlands. It is more bio diverse than Mer Bleue (Conservation Area).” The Greenbelt is a 20000-hectare band of rural land in the southern part of the National Capital Region, which is managed by the NCC. Henderson urged planners to take a role in the conservation. “I was in the audience after the clear cutting of the Beaver Pond when Mayor Jim Watson and (city manager) Kent Kirkpatrick said that a partnership has to be formed between the city, the province and the federal government,” he said. “I think the NCC would fit in this role.” In this round of consultations, the public was being asked to consider the third
phase of a master plan that would look at the uses of the greenbelt for the next 10 years. The consultations started in 2009 with the public advisory committee helping NCC staff and consultants to look at the greenbelt as it stands today. “It really asked what the greenbelt means to people,” said Cynthia Levesque with Senes Consulting. Staff worked with the master plan for the greenbelt in 1997 and then compared best practices from the United States and the United Kingdom. What resulted were three concepts the public was able to vote on with sticky notes, which Levesque said would be compiled and then sent to the NCC board of directors in the fall of 2012 to make a final decision. “The end result is likely to be a mix of all three concepts,” Levesque said. The main concepts mostly involve enhancing ecological linkages and corridors, in part through the use of forest plantations, adding and enhancing “buffer zones” between the Greenbelt and other ecologically sensitive areas. Levesque said they are considering removing some buildings that aren’t “compatible.” Levesque said in the second concept, areas such as the Nepean Sportsplex, the Queensway Carleton Hospital, the airport and Fallowfield and Eagleson park and rides would have the greenbelt designation removed. There will be equal parcels of land to replace them and they would still

Kanata Pathway Patrol needs volunteers Marilyn Miller is on patrol for a few good cyclists, walkers or inline-skaters. The Kanata Lakes woman needs help to patrol the dozens of recreational pathways throughout Kanata. “I want to help Kanata be a safe place,” said Miller. “Our goal is to be able to patrol all the paths in the summer – because we have a lot of paths.” It’s been nearly a year since Miller founded the Kanata chapter of the Pathway Patrol, a volunteer-organization co-ordinated by the City of Ottawa. The program promotes helmet safety and healthy living and offers assistance and information to pathway users, working in partnership with the National Capital Commission. The Pathway Patrol provides warnings about safety hazards or obstacles on city paths, offer reminders about city bylaws and provides bicycle maps. “Sometimes people are just lost . . . or blow a tire,” said Miller. “It’s fun, because you’re the ambassador for the city and you always have a happy smile.” Miller first became interested in pathway safety in November 2009, when her 17-year-old son, Daniel, was attacked and robbed biking home from work on a path behind the Signature Centre in

Kanata Lakes. Daniel suffered a severe concussion and the thieves stole his mountain bike, backpack, cell phone and iPod. Miller started the Kanata chapter of the Pathway Patrol last summer, and since then has recruited six members to patrol the Kanata Lakes path system. Miller said she’d like to expand the number of patrols. “We’re trying to get membership up to get it going in Kanata,” she said. “The more people we have the better.” Volunteers must be 18 or older, pass a criminal record check and complete a Pathway Patrol training session; they must also have standard first aid training and CPR level C certification, with training provided free of charge by the city. Pathway patrol volunteers work in groups of two or more people, seven days a week during daylight hours. Volunteers must commit to at least two patrols a month – usually around two hours in length – wear a helmet and carry a cell phone. The city isn’t just looking for cyclists – people can monitor the pathways while walking, cycling, running or travelling on in-line skates. Miller said she hopes to recruit volunteers from the large number of people who already regularly walk, cycle and run through the paths.

Kanata photographer raising funds for special needs hockey team JESSICA CUNHA jessica.cunha@metroland.com
A local photographer has taken his personal quest in creating a coffee-table style book of photographs public to help out the Capital City Condors, a hockey team for special needs children. Steve Cain, who owns CainCo Photography, located on Hazeldean Road, is raising funds through his White Shirt Gallery project to support the Condors. “I was looking for something different,” said Cain about tying his project to a charity. After reading an article in the KourierStandard about the Condors winning a
grant from the Aviva Community Fund competition, he made a point to go and see what the hockey team was all about. “I was hooked,” said Cain, a finalist in the small business category of the Kanata Chamber of Commerce People’s Choice Business Awards for 2011. “It started off as a pet project and now someone is benefitting from it.” WHITE SHIRT The idea for the White Shirt Gallery came after Cain and his family took part in a family portrait. The entire family was outfitted in a white long-sleeve dress shirt from Cain’s closet. After seeing the photos, Cain decided to take the idea to the streets and see how many people, places and things he could photograph in or with the white shirt. “I thought why just limit that to our family,” he said. The shirt has been photographed

on Cyril Leeder, president of Senators Sports and Entertainment, the 2009 New Year’s baby, a woman on her 100th birthday, a dog, and it’s been flown up a flag pole in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. “I’m always mulling things over, how can I do things differently,” said Cain, who started the project three years ago. “It was a way to keep fresh, keep creative.” Cain has been photographing people, objects and scenes as a hobby since he was around 10 years old. After a long career in the high-tech sector, he decided it was time for a change and opened his own photography studio. “We’ll see where life takes it,” he said. ‘BENEFITS KIDS’ Cain broached the idea of having the book help support the Condors with Jim and Shana Perkins, president and general manager, respectively, of the hockey team. Jim said he and Shana were thrilled after hearing about the White Shirt Gallery project and how Cain wanted it to benefit the Condors. “We still tend to be shocked when anything neat like that happens,” he said. “It’s just been one instance after another of meeting somebody and their heart being captivated by what these kids and families represent. “It’s not just that were developing working partnerships…we’re developing friendships too.” Jim and Shana will pose in the white shirt for the book, said Cain. “For me, it adds to the book. It benefits kids that need the money,” said Cain. “It’s a project that I was doing anyways.”
The Capital City Condors is a hockey team that caters to youth with intellectual and physical disabilities. Currently, the team has 40 players registered with about 40 more children on a waiting list. “The biggest challenge is still ice. We pay full price for the ice,” said Jim. “There’s just not ice availability to purchase. That’s our greatest expense.” He said it can be challenging to organize 40 kids with only one hour of ice time a week. “If I had two more hours of ice time drop in our lap, we could accommodate three hours, 30 kids per hour,” said Jim. “Then it’s a matter of staffing all that.” He said he’s looking to expand their volunteer list over the summer. People interested in volunteering can visit the website at www.capitalcitycondors.org. As well, anyone can take part in the White Shirt Gallery and donate to the Condors, said Cain. “For me it’s an opportunity to get people to participate and get an organization involved,” he said. Interested people are asked to make a minimum donation of $20, with all funds going to the Condors. Participants also receive a complimentary 8x10 photo from their shoot. “One of the reasons I chose the Condors is because the results of the donations is immediate,” said Cain. “While many valuable organizations are doing research for future benefit, the funding that goes to the Condors can immediately be seen as a smile on the faces of the players.” For more information, visit the website at www.caincophoto.com or email Cain at caincophoto@sympatico.ca with “White Shirt Gallery” in the subject line.

Kanata magazine up for National Magazine Award BLAIR EDWARDS blair.edwards@metroland.com

Kanata-based Legion Magazine is in the running for a National Magazine Award. The magazine has been nominated in the Best Single Issue category for its November 2010 commemorative issue on the First World War. “We’ve never been nominated (before), so this is huge for us,” said Jen-
nifer Morse, general manager of Legion Magazine. “To be in the best single issue category is wonderful.” Morse came up with the idea of publishing a special publication about Canada’s role in the First World War during a trip to Europe last summer. Morse said she wanted to see if Europeans really remember Canada’s military history during the First and Second World Wars. “Not only do they remember, they’re going over in droves to military sites

and they particularly remember World War One,” she said. Morse returned to Canada with an idea – why not craft a large special publication, something similar to the old photo-spreads put out by Life Magazine? Legion Magazine decided to put out its first-ever special interest publication, a 100-page issue that combined an overview written by Ottawa author and art historian Tim Cook, illustrated with dozens of photographs about Canada’s wartime experience during the 1914-18 war. It included a timeline and maps, listing Canada’s important battles on the Western Front. The magazine, which has a paid circulation of 264,000, faces nine other nominees for the award, which will be announced at a gala awards banquet in Toronto on June 10. Legion Magazine is published six times a year by Canvet Publications Ltd., and includes stories about military history, veterans issues and current Canadian Forces operations. “This nomination is especially gratifying in that is for Best Single Issue,” said Morse. “I am very happy for the staff. It was really a labour of love.” The issue was produced entirely inhouse under the leadership of art director Jason Duprau, editor, Dan Black, and designer Jennifer McGill. “They were the most involved,” said Morse. “The whole staff was involved.” The staff sifted through photographs from their archives, the National Archives of Canada and the War Museum to find ones that depicted the brutality of the First World War. “We went through thousands of photos, looking (for ones that) tend to capture not so much the who’s who of World War One, but the conditions, the trench

When the magazine went on the stands in November 2010, it was an immediate success, selling at 70 per cent versus the regular 35 per cent. “We hit on something here that’s important to Canadians,” said Morse. Legion Magazine is the third-oldest magazine in Canada, with a staff of nine and a string of dozens of freelancers. The 85-year-old publication is the third-highest read magazine in Canada, said Morse. “I’m really proud of the staff,” she said.

The 78-year-old woman was treated for minor bumps and bruises, but complained of some difficulty breathing, said Trottier. She was in stable condition in hospital. Three dogs were also travelling in the minivan at the time of the crash. “They were not injured as far as we could tell,” said Trottier, adding the OPP were making arrangements for someone to take the dogs. “Just in case the ladies are staying in the hospital for a couple days,” said Trottier. Two females are in hospital after a grey minivan rolled over on the highway last week. The vehicle was travelling westbound on Hwy. 417 between March and Richardson Side roads when it rolled and came to rest on its side in a ditch around 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 25. Firefighters had to stabilize the minivan and remove its roof in order to free the female passenger. The woman, who is in her 50s, was treated for hip and chest injuries, said J.P. Trottier, spokesperson for the Ottawa paramedics. “Her vital signs were stable at the scene,”

Hazeldean Mall Zellers taken over by Target department store chain EDDIE RWEMA eddie.rwema@metroland.com
Six Zellers locations in Ottawa area are set to become part of a new chain of Target department stores as the U.S.based retailer begins setting up shop in Canada in 2013. The six locations will include
the Zellers stores currently located at Hazeldean Mall in Kanata, Bayshore Shopping Centre, Billings Bridge Plaza, RioCan St. Laurent, Meadowlands Shopping Centre in Nepean and Place D’Orleans. More than 100 Zellers locations across Canada are getting prepared to make the switch
as Target aims to eventually acquire lease agreements for up to 220 Zellers stores nationwide. “We are thrilled to share these first details about our planned entry into Canada,” said Target Canada president Tony Fisher in a statement. “We are excited that these
initial store sites ensure Target will be represented throughout the country. ” In January, the retailer announced it was buying up to 220 leaseholds from Zellers, a unit of Hudson’s Bay Co. Each Target store will employ about 150 to 200 people, according to a statement posted
on Target’s website. Stores will begin the hiring process in 2012 and hope to engage with current Zellers employees to make it easy for them to apply. The Zellers chain has been operating in Canada since the early 1930s. There are 279 Zellers stores across Canada.

Morgan’s Grant greening project needs volunteers BRIARBROOK AND MORGAN’S GRANT COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION Residents of Breckenridge Crescent will have a better view after June 4, thanks to a greening project by the Briarbrook and Morgan’s Grant Community Association. The plan is to plant native grasses and flowers in front of 352 and 366 Breckenridge Cres. in two gardens to improve the view of the Sobey’s strip mall across March Road. However, volunteers are needed to make it a reality. Residents are invited to lend a hand and a shovel on June 4 starting at 10 a.m. on Breckenridge Crescent. Please come dressed to garden and bring your own gardening gloves. The BMGCA received $6,000 for the greening project from Trinity Developments, who is building the strip mall.
These gardens are phase one of the project and will serve as a test for the suitability of the plants to the location and stresses such as road salt. In the future, the BMGCA hopes to plant along March Road from the Old Town Hall to the storm water management pond and along the recreation path near Maxwell Bridge. People interested in volunteering should contact vp@bmgca.ca or pr@ bmgca.ca. More information about BMGCA events and activities can be found at www.bmgca.ca.

Kanata - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away

KYBA finishes successful season, starts summer training camps KANATA YOUTH BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION The Kanata Youth Basketball Association has finished yet another victorious season while providing quality basketball programs to over 600 young athletes aged between 5 and 18 years old. The association has trained countless basketball referees and volunteers over this same period
and has contributed to Kanata’s economy by bringing in teams from across the province in its annual Chris Paulin Tournament. The 40-plus teams in its house league program went headto-head in several end of year tournaments all over the region where family and friends were able to cheer their up-and-coming basketball stars. The competitive programs
didn’t fail to deliver either. For example, the Major Bantam Boys won Division 5 at provincials. Although regular season has ended, the KYBA will offer summer camps as it has recently partnered with Leo Rautins, NBA analyst on TSN and first Canadian drafted in the NBA’s first round, and Tony House, starting PG for the University of Manitoba Bisons and two-time
Ottawa-Carleton All-Star, and their Rautins-House Basketball Camp. Four different sessions will take place throughout the city, two of which will be in the west end. Players registered with the KYBA are eligible for a discount. The KYBA will also host its annual general meeting on June 23, location and time to be confirmed.
At the meeting, parents will not only have an overview about what the executive committee has been up to and how the association has developed over the past season, but they will be able to partake in elections granting them spots on the executive member board. For more information on the KYBA or Rautins-House Basketball Camps log on to www.kanatabasketball.ca.

CHEO’s pediatric experts and CHC’s community clinicians through regular professional development and consultation, using telemedicine and in-person access. “The new partnership shows how the Champlain LHIN is working with health providers to better connect their services and improve patient care,” said Alex Munter, Champlain LHIN CEO. “The LHIN brings communities and providers together to put in place innovative healthcare strategies, and this is an excellent example of that.” The project has several aims – to improve access to care for children and youth, to better standardize care for this population, and to ensure pediatric expertise at community health centres for years to come. This partnership adds a critical element to strengthening an integrated system of care for the region’s children and youth, and to contributing to their healthy development. Great Canadian Road Show visits Kanata Ever wonder what that antique or collectible sitting in your home is worth? Now’s the chance to find out. The Great Canadian Road Show has made a stop in Kanata and is looking to buy a wide range of antiques and collectibles. Experts in coins, war memorabilia, toys, jewelry and antiques, have set up shop at the Country Inn & Suites at 578 Terry Fox Dr. from May 24 to June 3. The show, which has been running for about a year now, travels the country searching for valuable items and offering expert appraisals at current market value. During the event’s first three days, hundreds of people showed up to have their antiques and collectibles appraised by experts, said Rafhy Abbou, the show’s manager.
“It’s been crowded non-stop,” said Abbou. “We’ve seen over 300 people just in the last three days.” About two-thirds of the visitors left with cheques in their pockets, with the show spending roughly $25,000 during the event’s first three days. “One person came in with 14 gold coins and walked out with almost $10,000,” said Abbou. A few of the coins were old British sovereigns from the late 1800s. Visitors are under no obligation to sell their antiques and collectibles, said Abbou, adding that they are welcome to drop in and learn a little bit about their item’s value. During a show in Stony Plain, Alta., in February, an Alberta man brought in a 30,000-year-old wooly mammoth tusk. The man, who wished to remain anonymous, said the item had been in his family for years, but no one knew what it was
worth. The tusk sold for $2,000. Cathy McIlween, a Kanata Lakes woman, was a little disappointed after she had her father’s old coin collection, which included a 1919 Canadian penny, appraised by one of the show’s experts. Unfortunately the coins weren’t rare. People can donate a portion of their sale to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation, with the Great Canadian Road show making a matching contribution.
KEN to host solar power talk KANATA ENVIRONMENTAL NETWORK The Kanata Environmental Network (KEN) is hosting a special presentation: “Solar Power in Kanata.” Ontario’s Green Energy Act is one of the most progressive plans in North America enabling individuals and communities to participate in green energy at the local level. The Green Energy Act promises to provide employment and new opportunities for technological research and development, something of interest to Kanata’s high tech workers. about how to participate in the feed-in-tarriff (microFIT) program as a householder, how to start or participate in community solar co-ops, and how to help promote green energy. The public seminar will be on June 8, at 7 p.m., in the Beaverbrook Community Centre, lcated at 2 Beaverbrook Rd. After the seminar, we will see if there is interest to form a solar group for Kanata. This is the fifth solar-related event that KEN has hosted and there has been a lot of interest from people in Kanata over the years. For more information about the presentation or the solar group, visit www.kanataenvironmentalnetwork.com.

Pathways tend to be safer with patrols PATROL, from 16 Pathway patrol volunteers do not enforce laws or confront criminals, but their very presence can’t help but reduce crime, said Monja DeLuca, Pathway Patrol co-ordinator. “The pathways do tend to be safer since we started,” said DeLuca. “Just being visible (reduces) the amount of crime that’s going on on the pathways.” The Ottawa police and the Pathway Patrol regularly share information related to pathway safeway from time to time, said DeLuca. But the role of the service is to assist recreational pathway users and promote health and safety, she added. “Our goal this year is to cover every path in Ottawa,” said DeLuca.
Pathway Patrol was founded in 1997, and has volunteers covering every part of the city, including Orleans, Barrhaven, downtown Ottawa, central Ottawa and Stittsville. This year’s volunteer force has swelled to 85 members. But the program could use some help, added DeLuca. “We’re just hoping we can spread the word to the smaller areas of Ottawa and get the numbers up with the programs,” she said. The Kanata Pathway Patrol will hold a training session at Ottawa City Hall, the Honeywell Room, on Monday, June 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. Anyone who would like to join the patrol should call Mona DeLuca at 613-580-2424, ext. 16044, or e-mail her at pathwaypatrol@ ottawa.ca; the program’s website is www.ottawa.ca/residents/volunteerservices.
