The National Capital Secondary School Athletic Association has reversed its decision last week to strip the Kanata high

school team’s trophy over a clerical error made during the start of the season.

The governing sports body for high school sports in Ottawa decided to return Earl’s championship trophy after an Ontario court judge last week overturned an NCSSAA decision to disqualify the Louis Riel Rebelles senior girls’ soccer team over a similar administrative error.

“In light of the recent court decision regarding the senior girls’ soccer team at Louis Riel, the NCSSAA executive has decided to grant the Earl of March senior boys’ rugby team the AAA/AAAA senior boys’ rugby championship,” said Cheryl Hyndman, president of the NCSSAA in a press release.

Over 100 students gathered at the Black Belt Excellence Martial Arts Academy in Kanata on June 5 to participate in a Board Break-A-Thon, and to present a $10,000 cheque to CHEO from their fundraising efforts.

Members young and old donned their martial arts uniforms with a rainbow’s assortment of belt colours to kick their way through 1,000 boards. Each $10 a student raised for CHEO gave them one board to break.

The event was part of Black Belt Excellence’s 25th anniversary celebration, which is coming up on September 25th. Phil Nguyen, who owns the academy with his wife Amelia, has lined up many events in the months to come, including the goal of raising $25,000 total for local charities, committing 25,000 random acts of kindness, as well as a 250-strong Taekwon-do demonstration of 2,500 kicks. An ongoing celebration of success such as this one can be described best in two words – “Pretty awesome,” as Nguyen put it.

Cheers and sounds of exertion filled the dojang, or studio, as students of all ages participated in the event. A CTV news crew helped to present the cheque to CHEO, while broadcasting the board-breakers to CTV’s CHEO telethon.

“I’m very honoured and humbled by people’s dedication and generosity supporting this event,” Nguyen said. “Our goal today is to support a good cause, but also to demonstrate ourselves as martial arts leaders in the community.”

As for the achievement of their goal to raise $10,000 for CHEO,

Nguyen said he knew they could do it.

“On the one hand I should be surprised,” he said, “But on the other hand, this just shows the spirit of our martial arts warriors.”

One of the attendees was Solene McCluskie, aged 7, who has been attending Black Belt Excellence with her two older sisters since August of last year.

With an armload of broken boards in hand, she said that kicking her way through them was fun.

“The first one was difficult,” she said, “But the second one was good.”

The wooden boards are made of pine and are either ½ inch or ¾ inches thick. Thinner boards were designated for the younger martial artists, but upon parental permission, many of the youngsters took a stab at the thicker boards.

Although Black Belt Excellence has already achieved an amazing accomplishment, their celebrations and fundraising efforts are only beginning.

“The theme this year is all about giving back,” Nguyen said.

“The goal of martial arts is to develop a strong body, mind and spirit, and when you have that, I believe that it’s not just a nice thing to do, to support worthwhile causes, but that it’s our duty to do so.”

That’s why Nguyen said it was no surprise to see the academy’s students and community come out in full force for the event.

A public meeting was set to be held this month, but that won’t be happening until September.

The city has received so much feedback on the controversial guidelines that staff need more time to sift through all the ideas and co-ordinate with affected city departments, said Selma Hassan, who is in charge of the project.

People came out in droves and sent many emails bemoaning the lack of teeth in the city’s rules governing infill homes.

Many community members say inappropriate infill is slowly ruining the fabric of their communities.

Although the city discourages it, many infill homes end up using the first floor as a garage, which changes the streetscape.

Rules about how much of the front yard can be taken up by a driveway are also frequently ignored, according to a study Hassan conducted last year.

Those were among the many issues Hassan is trying to reconcile with the city’s rules.

As she sifts through more than 400 comments and suggestions, developers have also been meeting with community members who are interested in the challenges posed by small-scale infill housing.

Development industry stakeholders and representatives from community associations gathered last week to continue the dialogue about this issue, Hassan said.

“It’s an opportunity to create some kind of working relationship,” she said.

Last week, the Louis Riel Rebelles girls’ senior soccer team learned it had been disqualified from competing in the league championship against the Glebe Gryphons.

On June 1, an Ontario Court judge granted an injunction to the Rebelles allowing the team to compete in the provincial championship.

Administrative slip-ups such as the ones made by the coaches at Earl and Louis Riel happen in university sports, said McGregor.

“We don’t penalize the student athlete and we do not penalize the team by disqualifying them,” she said.

The CIS, for instance, will sometimes assess a financial penalty to a team.

“There should be penalities but it shouldn’t be the gravest penalty.”

The decision to strip a Kanata high school boys rugby team of their city championship because of a clerical error is unfair, says the head of the governing body of Canadian university sports.

The Earl of March Lions were disqualified after it was discovered the team’s coach failed to enter one of the players’ names into an online roster at the beginning of the year.

When the error was discovered the Lions were told to return their trophy and to cancel plans to compete in the provincial championship tournament held in Oakville, Ont. from June 1 to 4.

This week, the National Capital Secondary Schools Athletic Association reversed its decision and returned the championship trophy to Earl of March.

But the press release made no mention of any plans to change the NCSSAA’s eligibility rules.

Long was holding the championship trophy – up until then it had been locked away by the school phys-ed department, waiting for transport to the NCSSAA. The crowd of parents and student athletes gathered in the auditorium erupted into several minutes of thunderous applause, said Jackson Elder, a player on the boys’ rugby team.

“It was really good to see the school was just as happy as we were that we got the championship back,” said Elder.

The Lions won the high school city championship on May 26, defeating the Glebe Gryphons 13-12, and finishing the season and playoffs with a 4-1 record.

But a few days later the team was told it had been disqualified from both the city championship and the provincial tournament held June 1 to 4 in Oakville, Ont. The NCSSAA told the team to return their trophy.

“I feel hurt,” said Elder at the time. “I felt like something was just stolen from us.”

“This is the first season Earl of March (rugby) has gone to OFSSA and they take that away from us because one name wasn’t on the electronic roster,” said Jackson. “Everyone was devastated.”

At the start of the season the Lions’ coach entered the team roster into an online data base run by the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Associations.

But one of the players’ names wasn’t entered, and no one noticed the error until after the Lions won the city championship.

The Lions coach was looking over room assignments for his players stay in Oakville during the provincial championship tournament and noticed a name was missing.

He notified officials at OFSAA, hoping they would fix the clerical error.

“Instead they disqualified us for the entire season,” said Long. “It was devastating to every member, every guy who was part of the team – it was unbelievable.

“None of us could understand how that ruling could go through two appeal processes without be-

ing overturned by any adult with common sense.”

The Gryphons were sent in Earl’s place to the provincials.

It was the second time this year that a team had been disqualified by the NCSSAA for a mistake made filling out a team roster.

Last week, the Louis Riel Rebelles girls’ senior soccer team learned it had been disqualified from competing in the league championship against the Glebe Gryphons.

Earl and Louis Riel were given three chances to appeal the decision, said Hyndman.

“Both schools appealed this decision and were granted their appeal request,” said Hyndman in a press release last week. “All three levels of appeal of the NCSSAA were followed.

“Each level made the decision to uphold the NCSSAA constitution.”

Members of the NCSSAA did not return numerous phone calls from the Kourier-Standard.

On June 1, an Ontario Court judge granted the Rebelles an injunction, allowing them to play in the provincial championship.

The Rebelles went on to win the provincial championship, defeating the Sarnia Northern Vikings 6-2 in the OFSAA TripleA gold final at Players Paradise Sports Complex in Hamilton, Ont. on Saturday, June 4.

The Lions were also seeking legal help to overturn the NCSSAA decision.

Members of the team travelled to the Elgin Street Courthouse on June 1, to seek legal help to file an injunction that would overturn the board’s decision and allow the team to compete in the provincial championship.

The lawyer told the boys it was too late to file an injunction and the cost of filing one would be prohibitive.

Since then, a lawyer has stepped forward who was willing to work pro-bono, and investigate the legal avenues open to the team.

Now that the team has won its case outside of the courts, the Lions will turn their attention to winning a provincial rugby championship next season.

“We’re going to come back next year and work hard,” said Elder.

After coming close to not being able to compete at all, the Louis Riel Rebelles girls soccer went on to win OFSAA gold on June 5 in Hamilton.

The team’s victory on the field came after a victory in the courtroom on the eve of the provincial championship. The team successfully fought against a disqualification decision by the National Capital Secondary School Athletics Association which in turn allowed the team to jump on a bus, drive through the night in time for the June 2 start of the Ontario Federation of School Athletics Associations’ AAA soccer championships.

Rebelles coach Joé Fournier said his team was impressed with the way his team was able to put the off-field issues out of mind in order to focus on their games.

“The farther they got in the championship the better they played. The girls were amazing,” Fournier said.

The team’s off-field troubles started when Fournier realized he had made an error on the team’s official roster, leaving off the name of one player. He contacted the NCSSAA and admitted to the clerical error, which led to the team’s disqualification meaning runners-up Colonel By Cougars were sent to the championships in Hamilton.

The decision did not sit well with Fournier or with the school’s principal, Martin Bertrand.

“I did not think the team would get disqualified. I thought at the most I would get a penalty for the error,” Fournier said.

Asked if would admit the error over again knowing the consequences; Fournier said he would never think twice about it.

“This time something good came out of it. I can only hope that what has transpired will help others avoid it,” Fournier said.

This is the second time this year a team has been disqualified by the NCSSAA over a clerical error made on a team roster.

The Earl of March Lions from Kanata were disqualified for the same omission of a team player’s name. When the error was discovered, Louis Riel decided to fight the decision, first appealing to the NCSSAA board, throough the chair of athletics, the board of reference and the board of appeal; but they all decided to uphold the original decision. After speaking with the Ottawa-Carleton French Public School Board lawyer, they decided they had no other recourse than to take the matter to court.

On June 1, a day before the competition started, an Ontario Judge ruled in the girls favour.

The ruling, however, left the Cougars with no other choice but to pack up and head back home from the OFSAA championship in

NCSSAA has some explaining to do

T

he National Capital Secondary School Athletic Association has some explaining to do.

Over the course of the past month, Ottawa’s regional high school sports body has stripped (and later returned) a championship title from the Earl of March Lions senior boys rugby team and disqualified both Earl and the Louis Riel Rebelles senior girls soccer team from competing in their sports’ provincial finals.

All because of minor clerical errors – each of the teams’ coaches forgot to enter a player’s name in the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Associations’ online website.

The Rebelles players were so upset they went to court and won a temporary injunction allowing the team to play in the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic

Associations championship last week.It was a crushing decision for Colonel By’s girls soccer team, who had won the city championship after the disqualification of the Rebelle’s in the city semifinals.They were sent home from the OFSAA finals in Hamilton on a bus.

Then there are the two teams from Glebe – the school’s boys’ rugby team were awarded the city championship after the disqualification of Earl and Glebe’s girls’ soccer team lost the city finals to Colonel By. Who’s to say they wouldn’t have beaten Louis Riel if the Rebelles had advanced to the city’s championship final?

Five teams were ultimately affected along with dozens of players and parents – many of whom are looking for answers from the NCSSAA.

But the volunteer-run sports body isn’t answering phone calls – at least from the media.

Marg McGregor, the CEO of Canadian Interuniversity Sport says the NCSSAA should review its eligibility rules and introduce less draconian penalties for clerical errors.

University varsity teams make innocent clerical errors all the time, said McGregor, but the penalty isn’t an automatic disqualification.

The CIS lets the penalty fit the crime, often slapping a fine on teams that innocently break the association’s rules.

The NCSSAA should follow that lead and impose less draconian penalties on teams that make clerical errors filling out a roster sheet.

Hopefully they are considering that option right now.

It’s not your grandfather’s NHL, Winnipeg

M

ost people are pretty happy that Winnipeg has worked itself back into the National Hockey League. If there is a city where hockey belongs, Winnipeg is it.

But amid the joyful voices are dire warnings. Winnipeg better sell out its arena every night, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman warns, or else. Winnipeg is too small, others say. No matter how much people love hockey in Winnipeg, there are not enough of them.

Of course, we heard that lots in Ottawa when the Senators first began playing here almost 20 years ago. After the heady first couple of years, reality settled in. We had a losing team and people stopped going to see it.

There were warnings then, some of them from the owner.

People started going again, maybe because of the threats, but probably because the team began winning. When the team wins, the fans come. It’s a formula that works just about everywhere.

When the team wins, other good things follow. Merchandise sold better.

Corporate sponsors were easier to attract. The Senators began appearing on television more often, a helpful thing for the revenue stream.

All of that can happen in Winnipeg,

It will be great if it works in Winnipeg, if only to discredit the assumption that pro sports, and particularly hockey, have been working on for many years.

That assumption is that population is more important than fan interest in determining a team’s future. Following that reasoning, the NHL expanded into a number of cities in which there was no interest in hockey but were really large.

One of those cities is Atlanta, which has now lost its second franchise in 30 years (don’t forget the Flames, which moved to Calgary in the ‘80s.)

hockey has become too big to survive in medium-sized cities. Sure, it is big.

The salaries are huge, and so are other costs. To pay them the teams set ticket prices discouragingly high. Can people in Winnipeg pay them? Apparently people in Ottawa can, although another losing season would be an interesting test.

Those ticket prices are high. One report says that Winnipeg will have to charge an average of $80. Did you ever notice that if you tell someone you went to a Senators game, the question is inevitably: “Did you pay for your ticket?” It is always assumed that no one would go to the game unless they got a freebie somehow.

Is everything getting too big? Look at all the people who are staying home, watching stuff on giant living room screens, rather than supporting the arts or their team.

Stores are too big and too remote.

The small one in your neighbourhood is gone. You have to get into your car to get to the large one. There are reports of a big cinema complex that will go into Lansdowne Park, causing smaller ones to be closed. So it goes.

Even the Ottawa International Jazz Festival, which has always operated on a reasonable scale, has become too

big. In order to attract enough paying customers to keep the festival going on its present scale, the festival has to abandon jazz on its main stage in prime time. If it works, is that good or bad?

Returning to smaller times, is not an option, experts say. If the jazz festival goes small, it loses corporate and government sponsorship. If a neighbourhood bookstore stays small, people who want to buy knickknacks and scented candles won’t go there. Apparently a bookstore that doesn’t sell scented candles goes out of business.

The odds are that pro hockey is never going back to the days of affordable salaries and affordable tickets.

Two Kanata high school students were honoured with Spirit of the Capital Youth Awards at a ceremony held last month at the Ottawa Marriott hotel.

The Spirit of the Capital Youth Awards, sponsored by Child & Youth Friendly Ottawa, celebrate the achievements and volunteer work of Ottawa’s youth.

Emily Hammond, a Grade 12 student at A.Y. Jackson Secondary School, won in the Young Athlete category in recognition of her athletic ability and volunteer work in the community.

“It was really great,” said the 18-yearold. “All the people that were there, it was just amazing to hear their stories and it was really amazing to be around a big group of kids who were really making a difference.”

Hammond is the captain of the Nepean Blue Devils girls’ basketball team and also coaches the intermediate girls basketball team at W.O. Mitchell Elementary School, her former school.

“I’ve grown up with sports pretty much,” said Hammond. “Just as I got older, I saw that sports can make a difference in people’s lives.”

Hammond led her school’s Sports Marathon Fund, a charity that helps two underprivileged students in India and Africa participate in sports, and joined many school social action com-

mittees.

Last year, Hammond took on the role of race director and co-ordinator for A.Y. Jackson’s Kenya Run, a studentdriven fundraiser which sponsors girls to attend Ibinzo Secondary School in Kenya.

She organized the run with the help of her fellow Grade 12 students, Monica Seidel and Simran Sandhu.

The 2010 Kenya Run raised more than $5,000 and attracted more than 200 runners.

“I was really busy but I really liked doing it all,” said Hammond. “It was a challenge, but I was able to do it.”

Aaron Shifman, 16, was runner up in the Youth & Technology category of the Capital Youth Awards.

“It’s pretty cool,” said Shifman. “It’s a huge honour to win the award.”

The Earl of March Secondary School student’s skills in computer programming and his passion for learning led to create a number of computer applications and unique projects.

Aaron re-engineered the online digital booking system used by a number of local high schools and he created the mcQuiz.

“I started off with the mcQuiz,” he said. “Basically it’s a tool for teachers to write multiple choice tests and then the students would be able to log in and do them to see their progress – just to understand if they’re understanding the subject material.”

An Ontario Municipal Board decision to expand the urban boundary has left some wondering which rural areas will be added to the city’s urban limits.

The city fought a losing battle at the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) to defend its decision to limit the expansion of the city’s urban boundary to 230 hectares over the next 15 years. Instead, the boundary will increase by 850 hectares over the next 20 years – a figure that city staff had originally recommended and city council rejected in June of 2009.

The 15-year timeframe was aimed at promoting intensified development in the city’s urban core, and council said the boundary could be expanded after that as needed.

Essentially, city council’s decision recognized that more sprawl would be necessary eventually – but that decision could be put off in the short term as the city focuses on building up the lands already available for development.

A group of approximately 20 developers promptly appealed that decision to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB).

Some of those developers want to see the boundary expanded by between 2,500 and 3,000 hectares – a far cry from the 230 the city approved, or even the 850 hectares the OMB decided to support.

The urban boundary restricts where development can occur and where city services, such as water and sewer, are offered.

The OMB’s written decision calls the city’s move “clever,” but added that it does not follow the province’s policy statement on how growth should be projected.

include that same 20-year timeline, the OMB decision states.

The city also ran into some trouble when it included a 15-year timeline for residential growth, but a 2031 horizon for employment growth, an inconsistency that was criticized by the OMB. “The change in the planning horizon at the time of adoption … to avoid the numbers generated is not good planning and reflects negatively on the earlier public process,” the OMB decision states.

The board’s decision also means the city will have to change its approach to intensification targets within city limits, saying that targets can’t be used as a case to prevent expansion to the urban boundary.

The city’s policies promote intensification as a more sustainable type of development that makes use of the city’s current infrastructure such as water and sewer services, without having to build expensive new infrastructure on the city’s suburban fringes.

In January, city lawyer Tim Marc pegged Ottawa’s chances of winning at the OMB around 70 per cent.

At that time, Mayor Jim Watson said he thought the OMB battle was worthwhile because it would confirm that elected officials makes the final decisions on growth and planning, but instead the OMB’s decision reinforces that the city’s planning staff and the board itself have the final say.

That’s one possibility, but Stittsville Coun. Shad Qadri thinks it could go another way.

“My concern is now that the OMB has ruled on the 850 (hectares), but (has) not suggested anything about staff recommendations, it may open up some other doors … for different areas or different landowners to come forward with their applications,” he said.

For his part, Qadri said he would like to see city council stick to the original areas that were recommended by city staff.

That includes 359 hectares of land in the Kanata and Stittsville areas, as well as 102 hectares in Barrhaven, 37 hectares in Leitrim and 343 hectares in Orleans.

The following areas had been considered for inclusion in the city’s urban boundary when staff originally recommended an 850-hectare expansion in 2009: - At the north end of March Road on either side of the road (includes 235 hectares of developable land) - West of the new Terry Fox Drive extension (47 hectares of developable land) - North of Stittsville, west of the Kanata West urban boundary and south of Highway 417 near Carp Road (70 hectares of developable land) - West of Stittsville and north of Hazeldean Road (39 hectares

of developable land) - 163 hectares within Fernbank Estates - South of Stittsville (hectares of developable land) - South of Barrhaven and east of Highway 416 (102 hectares of developable land) - South of Leitrim (170 hectares of developable land) - Southeast of Leitrim, east of Bank Street (103 hectares of developable land) Council will have to reconsider which lands will be absorbed into the urban boundary and will eventually have to vote on a new official amendment that aligns the boundary expansion with what was decided by the OMB. Qadri said there were no additional lands in his ward slated to be included in the urban boundary beyond what city council already approved with the 230hectare expansion.

For that reason, Qadri supported the original 230-hecatre expansion, but other suburban councillors, Wilkinson, wanted to see the boundary pushed out by 850 hectares.

“The staff recommendation made a lot of sense because it had enough land so that you could actually meet our objectives, which is exactly what the OMB ruled,” Wilkinson said.

“At the same time … it wasn’t a major expansion of the urban boundary.”

The benefit of increasing the boundary expansion is that it can help keep land and housing prices at a stable level, Wilkinson added.

“What we have seen in the last year or so is that the cost of land is skyrocketed and housing costs have gone up because of that,” she said.

Drummers often get the short end of the stick when performing in school bands, said David Cronkite.

“Bands always have a difficult time training their drummers and I know this from growing up in a band system,” said the Beaverbrook drum teacher. “Drummers often get left out.”

It’s not the band director’s fault, he added.

Drums are just a special instrument, and students benefit from the attention of a percussion teacher, said Cronkite.

Not many band directors are drummers, so the percussion section doesn’t get the attention they need, he said.

And that’s too bad, added Cronkite.

“It’s the percussion section that really can drive the band.”

Seven years ago, Cronkite started volunteering one day a week teaching percussion to a four-student drum ensemble at W. Erskine Johnson Public School in Beaverbrook.

“David’s private teaching and his years of volunteer work with my percussion ensemble have made a huge difference with my drummers,” said Nancy Cooke, the grades 7 and 8 music teacher at W. Erksine Johnson. “He’s had a lot of mentorship for the kids.”

Finding the right sheet music for an elementary school drum ensemble can sometimes feel like hunting for a needle in a haystack, said Cronkite.

Most of the pieces are either too difficult to master or so simple they bore the students; the few that might work required instruments the school did not own.

Cronkite decided to take matters into his own hand.

“I just thought, (heck), I’m going to write something.”

Last week, the W. Erkskine Johnson drum ensemble performed Cronkite’s new piece “Stick with Me.” The ensemble performed the piece on snare drums; the music called on the drummers to tap their sticks, stamp their feet and keep musical time using their right hand.

“I got the kids to shout, ‘One, two, three, four!’ during the piece,” said Cronkite. “Visually it’s very fun to watch.

The ensemble had a blast performing the music, said Cooke.

“The piece went really, really well,” she said.

Cronkite has been teaching drums since 1978; the native of Truro, N.S. performed in a high school band that won the 1980 Canadian National Stage Band Festival competition.

A Beaverbrook man is keeping his friend’s inspirational memory alive by hosting a charity golf tournament.

Andrew Wayling came up with the idea to host The Strokes for Emilie Inspirational Golf Classic to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis Canada and the Emilie Joinette Scholarship Award – a grant to help young people with cystic fibrosis who are raising awareness about the disease.

“The basis is because Emilie was an inspiration,” said Wayling.

“That’s what the tournament is based on.”

The Joinette family was unavailable for comment on the tournament.

Joinette, who passed away from CF at the age of 22 in December 2009, was an incredible woman, said Wayling. She always had a smile on her face and did everything in her power to raise awareness about the disease.

She represented the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario during multiple telethons, she spoke at galas, university events and the 65 Roses benefit dinner about her life with CF. She was also a spokesperson for organ donation awareness; Joinette received two double-lung transplants, one in 2006 and one in 2007.

“I wanted to do something to honour Emilie and raise money, to keep Emilie’s overall inspiration and memory strong,” said Wayling, who went to elementary and high school with Joinette.

“She was a very amazing person, the strongest person I met. She always had a smile on her face.”

The Strokes for Emilie Inspirational Golf Classic early-bird registration ends on June 15 and includes a draw for a prize bundle. Regular registration ends July 5. The event will be held on July 15 at the Canadian Golf and Country Club, in Ashton, Ont. starting at 10 a.m.

Wayling said he’s hoping to get about 140 people registered for the tournament, and added there is a dinner only option as well for those who don’t golf.

“I’m hoping the golf tournament becomes an annual event where we can refill the scholarship fund and hand it out as well,” he said.

After a tense and terrifying fivemonth wait Jeff and Jenna Gonzalez were told their five-year-old son Riley didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have lymphoma, a type of blood cancer.

Instead, the reason Rileyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lymph nodes kept swelling was due to an aggressive form of Strep A. Now, the couple is running a 21-kilometre half marathon in San Francisco on Oct. 16 as part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Team In Training initiative to raise money for people battling blood cancers.

They both said they want to help other parents who have to go through the ordeal they were spared from. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We wanted to give back any way we could and we thought this was an appropriate way to do that,â&#x20AC;? said Jeff.

Both Jeff and Jenna must each raise $3,500 in order to run in the half marathon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nice the money is getting used to develop treatments,â&#x20AC;? said Jenna. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;IT WAS SADâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Riley, a junior kindergarten student at Roch Carrier Elementary School, started getting swollen lymph nodes last year.

His parents were told it would get better but four months after the condition first started it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t getting any better. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They just kept growing,â&#x20AC;? said Jeff, who works for the Ottawa Police Service.

Riley was referred to two specialists and after the initial biopsy tests were completed he was diagnosed with lymphoma. An infection resulting from the first

surgery caused Riley to undergo a second surgery. â&#x20AC;&#x153;His whole face swelled up,â&#x20AC;? said Jeff. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was sad.â&#x20AC;?

Jenna said it was a scary time because her grandmother died from lymphoma.

However, after further testing was completed, it was determined Riley didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have cancer, but an aggressive form of Strep A. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were really happy it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cancer,â&#x20AC;? said Jenna, who runs a daycare out of her home.

The couple said Riley, and his six-year-old brother Zander, handled everything extremely well. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He was very tough,â&#x20AC;? said Jeff, who added the school, friends, family and neighbours really pulled together for the family. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The whole community was great. When it got serious they hung in there.â&#x20AC;?

The couple added after they heard the good news they wanted to do something to help other families who arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t so lucky. So they decided to sign up for a half marathon that raises money and awareness for blood cancers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We get to raise money for other families going through it,â&#x20AC;? said Jenna.

“We’re just getting started,” said Jenna, who added they will host about three garage sales and they’re trying to come up with other fundraising ideas.

People are welcome to donate unwanted items at the garage sale to sell.

The couple will have information about blood cancers and the options people living with cancer have in Ottawa at the sale as well.

“People don’t always know,” said Jenna, who added a friend of hers fighting the disease didn’t know there were support groups in the city.

As part of their training, the couple will run in the June 17 Relay For Life. They also run four times a week, with the boys

tagging along on their bike or scooter.

“It’s a little intimidating,” said Jeff about the half marathon, the first large run either he or Jenna will partake in. But he added they are looking forward to seeing the scenery as the run over the Golden Gate Bridge.

A.Y. Jackson Secondary School was the site of the third annual Kenya Run – an event designed to raise money for girls to attend school in the country – on June 4.

Over 70 participants, who were changed $25 to race in five- and 10-kilometre runs, lined up at the starting line.

The walk was organized by A.Y.’s Global Action team and their goal was to match the nearly $5,000 they raised last year through entrants fees and donations. A total for 2011 will be released

soon.

A.Y. teamed up with Community Education Services of Canada and will be donating all their proceeds to Ibinzo school in Kenya – an all-girls high school.

Grade 12 student and race director Emily Hammond said the school was picked because it is one of the poorest in the country.

Simon Nabukwesi, high commissioner of Kenya, was on hand and kicked off the run.

“I want to thank you for this accomplishment,” he said. “This is a demonstration of love.”

It was a makeover fit for a home renovation television show.

Students from the All Saints Catholic High School’s interior design course and club transformed St. Mary’s Home’s recreational room from a small-looking, dark space into a light, airy, Zen-like living area.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Grade 11 student Michael Meehan.

“When you walk in, you’re like ‘Whoa.’”

That sentiment was echoed by about eight girls living at St. Mary’s – a social service agency that offers help to young pregnant women, young moms and dads and their infants – when they saw the completely re-done room for the first time on Thursday, June 2.

“It changed from this mustard yellow colour to this peaceful, relaxed setting,” said Michaela Asquith.

“It’s amazing, it’s beautiful,” said St. Mary’s staff Catherine Adey. “This is totally different.

It’ll support these guys.”

“It’s really incredible that people outside (St. Mary’s) would put this much work in,” said Adey.

“It’s a tremendous amount of support.”

The walls were given a fresh application of paint, new couches were ordered, a flat-screen TV was mounted on the wall and little extra touches showed the amount of work the students, teachers and volunteers put into the redesign.

“We knew they were in dire need of a makeover,” said Grade 12 student Mallory McCarthy.

“We wanted something calm and Zen-like.”

Nancy MacNider, the executive director at St. Mary’s said she couldn’t believe the transformation, likening it to the personal transformations the girls who come to the home experience.

“It was such a gift for us, a profound gift,” said MacNider. “What this says to our youth is the community cares about them, they’re not alone.”

This is the premise of a new play, Complex Numbers, which will debut as part of the Ottawa Fringe Festival on June 19.

Written by Westboro sex columnist Nadine Thornhill, Complex Numbers is â&#x20AC;&#x153;a smart, romantic comedy with a twist,â&#x20AC;? she said.

The main character Fiona, a mathematician, tries to navigate the complexities of an office romance. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As she tries to solve the equation of first dates, kinky sex and long-term commitment, she learns that the best answers arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always easy,â&#x20AC;? said Thornhill.

The inspiration for the play came in the way of Thornhillâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s husband, Phil Eisen, who works for Kanata-based security company Irdeto. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The main character is a mathematician and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m married to a mathematician,â&#x20AC;? said Thornhill. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wanted to explore the idea of the office romance and do it in a way that is different then the way you see in romantic comedies. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wanted to explore what would happen if you had a relationship where people did the exact oppositeâ&#x20AC;Ś I would call it radical communica-

The Briarbrook and Morgan’s Grant Community Association’s biggest event of the year is the annual summer barbecue.

The summer barbecue is scheduled for Saturday, June 18 from noon to 3 p.m. in W.C. Bowes Park at the corner of Halton Terrace and Klondike Road.

But there’s more than just food on the menu. We have a great lineup of events and activities including kids games, a bouncey castle, arts and crafts, face painting, a dog competition and an adult soccer game, with live music and a free barbecue and pizza.

We will be kicking off the barbecue with a new event this year: a kids’ decorated bike parade!

We will gather at 11:45 a.m. at the parking lot in W.C. Bowes Park along Halton Terrace, next to the play structure.

Then at noon, the kids will cycle into the main portion of the park and line-up to have their decorated bikes judged.

“I think there’s a different type of comedy that comes out of that,” said Thornhill, the playwright behind Ottawa Fringe Festival Best in Venue 2008 winner The Wedding Night and Best in Venue 2009 winner Oreo.

“Basically the play is about negotiating relationships but in a very unconventional way.

There is a twist in the story…to the office romance that people will hopefully not see coming.”

The male driver of a pickup truck was airlifted to hospital on June 1 after his vehicle slammed into the back of a five-ton delivery truck.

One male was airlifted to hospital after the pickup truck he was driving rearended a five-ton delivery truck on March Road earlier today.

Firefighters had to remove the driver’s side of the Ford F250 pickup truck and use hydraulic rams to free the driver from the wreck, which occurred around 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday, June 1, before he could be transported by air ambulance to hospital.

The dashboard and steering wheel of the pickup truck trapped the driver after

his vehicle slammed into the back of a five-ton Home Hardware delivery truck on March Road, between Maxwell and Old Carp roads.

A dog that was in the front seat of the pickup truck was killed in the crash, said firefighter spokesman Marc Messier.

A car and a second pickup truck in front of the five-ton delivery truck were also involved in the crash due to the force of the collision. The vehicles sustained minor damages, said Messier.

No other extrications were needed and no other injuries were reported.

Ottawa police are investigating the collision.

Gymnasts enjoy golden weekend KANATA RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS ASSOCIATION Kanata gymnasts captured three provincial titles at the Ontario Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships held in Etobicoke, Ont. on June 2.

The three winners are Erika Lin, Megan Kawai and Lucinda Nowell.

Nowell, 14, achieved personal best scores for each of her routines in rope, clubs and choice (ball), winning a silver and three gold medals, including overall gold, making her Ontario champion.

She won silver with her aetsthetic gymnastics group teammates Megan Kawai, Danica Goodchild, Ember Forbes, Beth Boyd and Laura Manyoki.

She then teamed up with Megan Kawai to win the Ontario championship in the junior duo/trio event for their rope routine.

This is Kawai’s fourth overall win in the duo championship.

Erika Lin won an overall gold medal for her free routine and rope routine.

She has only won golds during her entire season of competition.

Haley Miller, 8, in her first year of competition, won silver medals for her free and rope routines, and won the overall silver medal in the 1B category.
