BRIDGE SAGS The city is investigating why Hazeldean Road bridge sank more than expected after supports were removed.

After a year of waiting the Terry Fox Drive extension is now open to motorists. The newly constructed stretch of roadway, which extends from the Kanata Centrum to March Road, opened on July 21, when Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson led a small convoy of vehicles down the blacktop. “I have heard lots and lots from people who are just absolutely happy that it’s there,” said Wilkinson, who drove down the road shortly after it opened at 9:30 a.m. She said an official opening will take place midmonth, set tentatively for the morning of Aug. 15. The road, connecting Morgan’s Grant to Kanata Lakes, provides an alternate route to March Road, which is often backed up during morning and afternoon rush hour. “It has certainly made a big difference for people who want to get from Morgan’s Grant to the Centrum or to any area,” said Wilkinson. “It’s just opened a second route.” The extension of Terry Fox Drive has been in the plans since Kanata was first developed, said Wilkinson. The road has been constructed in stages, with this extension being the final stage. Terry Fox Drive has been built so it can be widened to four lanes eventually, said Wilkinson.
