A Glen Cairn pathway where teenagers congregate to drink and smoke marijuana has sparked a call for the creation of an area neighbourhood watch. The walkway, which connects Abbeyhill Drive to Oakburn Road, tends to attract students from A.Y. Jackson Secondary School, located across the road, during the school year as a place to smoke, drink and be rowdy, according to police. “They come out here to smoke their dope and drink their beer,” said community police officer Const. Ryan Strotmann. “I’ve confronted them on many occasions.” The pathway is surrounded by hedges on both sides, which back on to houses on Abbeyhill and Oakburn. A small clearing on one side of the path creates a hiding spot and the unobstructed view of either end gives fair warning to people using the path for illicit purposes if the police show up. The community police centre is in the process of trying to create a Neighbourhood Watch for the area on Abbeyhill, Oakburn and Oriole Avenue. Strotmann said they hope to have a strong presence in the area before the new school season starts again in September, including having officers on bicycles at the entrances to the path. One resident in the area, who’s lived there for over 20 years, said the disturbances happen mostly during the school year. NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH, see 4

A group of 18 co-workers from Ottawa smile while receiving their cheque for $7.1 million after winning the LOTTO 6/49 jackpot on Aug. 10, 2011, (CNW Group/ OLG Winners). Geronazzo, manager of public relations with the company, in a press release. About 200 of the 300 employees are expected to be out of work when the stages are completed. Smart Technologies, which manufactures interactive white boards for classrooms, is planning to shift its operating base to Mexico.

In the wake of impending layoffs from Smart Technologies, 18 workers celebrated after they found out they won the lottery. The group, which includes residents from Kanata, Nepean, Stittsville, Carleton Place and Ottawa, won over $7 million in the Lotto 6/49 jackpot on Aug. 10, just a day after the company issued a notice of massive layoffs. “I walked from the bus stop with one of the winners,” said a worker at Smart Technologies. “He didn’t even know he’d won yet.” At least 10 members of the winning group had received pink slips from their employer before learning of their big cash windfall. “It’s surreal,” Shaun Hogan, a resident of Carleton Place, told reporters when the group picked up its cheque at Lotto 6/49 headquarters in Toronto on Aug. 12. “This has just been nothing but a roller coaster ride.” Each of the winners will take home just under $400,000. “I was in disbelief for about 20

‘They can’t smoke up on school grounds, so they come here’: resident NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH, from 1 “They (the students) just use it for a place to hide and smoke weed,” said the man, who didn’t want his name used. “All you can hear is the guys coughing up lungs.” Garbage is a big issue, he said. One resident even put out a plastic garbage can in the clearing for the teens to use after getting fed up with the amount of litter left behind. The garbage can was lit on fire. “My dad had to go put it out in the middle of the night,” said the resident. A garbage can at the end of the pathway on Abbeyhill was just replaced last week, said

Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley, who went door-to-door with Strotmann and his team, talking to residents about starting a Neighbourhood Watch. The electrical and hydro boxes located in the middle of the path have been sprayed with graffiti. “The local residents are picking up garbage,” said Hubley. “Neighbours are contacting us saying, ‘Yeah, we have a problem’.” Pat Schrie, who lives close to the path, said you can really smell the weed when the students light up. “They can’t smoke on school grounds so they come here,” she said. Schrie has lived in the area for about 27 years and said the issue of rowdy students

has been going on for about 10 years. After talking with Hubley and Strotmann, she said she would consider signing up to be a part of the Neighbourhood Watch. Victor McNabney, the police volunteer co-ordinator for Neighbourhood Watch, said having the program in the area could help deter the crime and vandalism. “It takes people who realize there’s a need to fight crime in the area,” he said, adding it also helps the police know who to be in contact with in regards to crime. “When we look at Kanata South,” said McNabney, “it’s a little under-represented in terms of Neighbourhood Watches.” Jessica Cunha photo

A pathway in Glen Cairn used by teenagers as a place to drink, smoke and be reckless, has prompted community police to try to create a Neighbourhood Watch in the area.

After a terrifying accident where a six-month-old baby was dragged nine metres by a vehicle, the infant is home and doing well. “He’s out of the hospital and in a good mood,” said a police spokesman. Around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13, the baby was dragged face-down on the pavement when his car seat became hooked under the car door outside the family’s home on MacNeil Court, in Katimavik. The infant had been placed on the ground beside the open car door by an older sibling.

A younger sibling left in the vehicle engaged the gear shift and the vehicle started to reverse. The open door hit the car seat, trapping the infant and dragging him until bystanders intervened and grabbed the baby, said police. “It’s just an unfortunate incident,” said the officer. The infant was taken to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. “They’re happy,” said the police about the family. “The child is in good spirits and good health.” The investigation is ongoing, said police, but likely won’t result in charges. “It was an accident,” said the officer.

Federal child care needed now

T

he Conservative government has dragged its heels on a federal daycare program for years. Instead, the government sends a monthly cheque for $100 to families for every child under age six. Last week, Human Resources and Skills Development Minister Diane Finley stuck to the party line during a press conference in Barrhaven, saying the $100 cheques are all about choice for parents, while a federally-managed system would remove that choice. But what choice does a parent have if there is no child care available to buy? That’s the case for thousands of parents on waiting lists in Ottawa. The numbers across the country are staggering. If you don’t think you have a stake in affordable and accessible child care, you are mistaken. By stepping up with a federal child care system, the government would immediately free up a huge chunk of our potential workforce. Suddenly parents working part-time would be able to work full-time. Other parents who stay home today would immediately have time to work some of the time outside the home.

One government minister at the Barrhaven event last week said cost – not parental choice – is the key issue. Carleton-Mississippi Mills MP Gordon O’Connor said the price tag for federal daycare would be $16 billion annually. But that number – which sounds inflated – would be in part offset by other savings. Add up all the $100 cheques, many of which go to families that don’t need the financial help. Cut out the cheques each month and the government saves about $2.4 billion annually. Remove the tax credit companies receive if they create child care spaces today. The government could also expect an expanded tax base as more people hit the labour market, freed from stay-at-home care. A YWCA report issued in March reviews prior research that concludes that “over the long term, every public dollar invested in quality early learning and child care programs returns $2.54 in benefits to society,” mainly through improving cognitive abilities. The federal government can take the easy way out and insist we can’t afford national child care. But really, we can’t afford not to.

F

or the last 20 summers, ever since the train ceased to be an affordable option, we have driven the Trans-Canada Highway across northern Ontario to Kenora and sometimes beyond. It’s a trip not enough people take, as you can tell by the increasing number of closed restaurants, motels and gas stations along the way. Last year’s casualty was the Busy Bee, a homey restaurantgift shop at Nairn Centre, west of Sudbury. This year it’s the Rossport Inn, an adornment to the former fishing village on Lake Superior since 1884. Border hassles and our rising dollar have cut into tourism from the U.S. The economic decline of Northern Ontario, particularly in the pulp and paper towns, is reflected along the highway. Yet it is a highway well worth taking – a very drivable road with many passing lanes and breathtaking views along the north shore of Superior. Fortunately – or not, depending on how you look at it – it is never crowded. Always on the lookout for meaningful trends along the highway, I am somewhat pleased to be able to report that the Ontario government has put shiny new outhouses at rest stops along the

CHARLES GORDON Funny Town highway. Oh, and people painting their names on rock faces is back. For some reason, the more beautiful the setting, the more people feel a need to make their mark on it. After a while, the writing on the rocks took a back seat to the building of inukshuks. This was nice at first, but got to be a bit annoying. You remember how cute it was back in the 1980s when people began doing The Wave at football, baseball and hockey games. It seemed then like a nice bit of audience participation but the copycat syndrome took over and The Wave became a cliché. You couldn’t escape it. Amazingly, it persists to this day in some backwaters. The inukshuk, a few rocks piled together in a certain way, was a beautiful

idea in its original context, but has now become so widely imitated as to become meaningless. Inukshuks are everywhere along the northern Ontario TransCanada. Some of them live up to their meaning in Inuit, “in the likeness of a human.” Most of them do not. Most of them look like somebody started to pile up some rocks in a certain way, then get bored and went off to do something else. In the old days, people used to paint their names on the rockfaces along the highway. “Joe loves Irma, July 6, 1978.” This wasn’t pretty and it’s just as well that it doesn’t happen everywhere. On the other hand, the tops of the rockfaces were left pretty much as God made them. Now, it’s pretty well impossible to find a rockface along the Trans Canada Highway that doesn’t have a pile of rocks on top of it. their ilk. Maybe that’s for the best. It’s probably a bit nannyish to worry about piles of rocks falling on somebody’s head (but what a uniquely Canadian story it would be!). The real problem is that there is no longer a rock surface along the Trans-Canada that somebody has not piled rocks on. And how many of them even know why? Since the Ontario government can spend all that money on fancy new outhouses, maybe it can funnel some more funds on finding constructive ways for people to make their mark – a guest book? It’s probably too much to hope that people will some day decide to leave no mark at all.

Medical staff a credit to their profession To the editor, I would like to say a huge thank you to the staff at the Kakulu Med-Team Clinic and Pharmasave and the X-Ray clinic at the Kanata Town Centre for going “above and beyond”! On Saturday, July 30, I brought my 17-year-old daughter Sam Rousseau to the clinic. Anticipating a long wait, my husband had dropped us off and would return later. As it turned out the wait was shorter than expected and we quickly had a diagnosis of a suspected fractured wrist (sustained in a soccer game). One of the staffers phoned the X-Ray clinic and were told that they were closing shortly but if we could get there in a few minutes they could get the X-Ray done (otherwise it would be off to the Queensway Carleton Hospital). I explained that we would walk there as quickly as we could (hubby had not returned yet and neither of us have cell phones) and if we made it great but if not then we would just go to the hospi-

tal. Unbeknownst to me, Dr. Eden-Walker, who had examined Sam, personally walked to the pharmacy and, long story short, arranged for an employee to drive us both to the clinic! I did not get this young lady’s name but would like to thank her again (and her supervisor) for taking the time to drive us. I was completely flabbergasted! When we arrived at the X-Ray clinic the staff were friendly, helpful and professional. They whisked Sam in (even though we were almost half-hour past the cutoff time for seeing the last patient and they were ready to go home for the day; kudos to you ladies). Back to the clinic with our disk where the doctors reviewed the X-Ray and applied a cast (thank you to the female doctor who applied the cast; friendly, professional and down-to-earth). In conclusion, I was most impressed with the attention Sam received from all concerned, especially Dr. Eden-Walker. Thank you all. Pam Robertson Glen Cairn ***

Emergency response ludicrous To the editor, Re: “Backhoe accident near Bridlewood sends man to hospital”, Aug. 11, KKS. I was thunderstruck to read the Kourier-Standard article about a backhoe accident near Bridlewood, and that 32 firefighters and 14 fire trucks raced to the scene of this relatively minor accident. This is ludicrous in the extreme. If this is all Ottawa firefighters have to do, clearly there are far too many of them on the payroll. It goes a long way to explain the never ending municipal tax increases which run at two to three times the rate of inflation. It is time to thin the herd at City Hall. Quality & timelessness are found in structures built with brick & stone. But after years in our harsh Canadian Climate, masonry needs a little refurbishing due to weathering.

instead of blindly demanding tax removal without considering the implications, let’s see intelligent dialogues on how we can remove incentives on the things we don’t want (like GHG emissions and toxins) and reduce taxes on things we want to promote (like income). It’s time to take action and responsibility on all levels, from individuals to corporations to governments. Can we rise to the challenge of looking beyond the status quo, and use our smarts to reduce both our global impact and our power bill? Louise St.Germain Kanata ***

Victory! Courtney and Andrew Wahl win their second consecutive race around the Ottawa River at the Kanata Sailing Club on Aug. 9.

Novice sets sail for adventure on Ottawa River COURTNEY SYMONS courtney.symons@metroland.com

Lifejacket? Check. Experienced guide? Check. Dorky lanyard to prevent my glasses from flying off ? Check. Oh, and pouring rain? Check. All elements were in place for my maiden voyage on a sailboat – well, except for the skill set required to do so. But that, hopefully, I could learn. The Kanata Sailing Club kindly invited me to test my sea legs and learn to sail on one of their boats. Reporter Jessica Cunha had visited last year, and she assured me that I would be just fine. She brought along her camera to capture the experience – which she had to wrap in a plastic bag so as not to soak it during the storm. I met my experienced sailing guide, Andrew (“Call me Andy”) Wahl upon arrival at the Kanata Sailing Club on Sixth Line Road along the Ottawa River. If there’s anything that can put a newbie sailor at ease, it is the knowledge that they will be sailing with an experienced pro. I was lucky to have this in Andy who has been sailing since 1968. “With experience, the sailboat becomes an extension of the sailboat,” he said. “It’s like riding a bicycle – with a lot more variables.” Well, I can ride a bike, so there’s a start. Recounting her experience from last year, Jess told me that she had evaded her biggest fear.

“I really thought I was going to get smacked with the boom a couple of times, but thankfully it never happened,” she said. Andy explained that the new hollow aluminum booms don’t hurt as much as the old wooden ones. “The old ones could really knock your block off,” he said. “I’ve seen stars a few times.” As we waited to see if lightning would strike and prevent us from getting out on the water, I learned about the certification process required to become a fullfledged sailor. The Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) requires you to earn your White Sail III certificate before sailing solo. White Sail I allows you to steer the boat, White Sail II lets you sail with supervision, and the final White Sail III enables you to head out on the water with only your skills, the boat, the wind, and the water. One bonus about becoming a member of the Kanata Sailing Club is that they provide sailboats to rent out. “You can learn to sail in the spring, then sail all summer without ever having to buy a boat,” Andy said. I found out I would be sailing on an Albacore, a 16-foot boat with two sails and two crew members. Andy owned an Albacore for about 10 years, and it’s his favourite kind of sailboat. “It’s fast, it’s high performance, it’s sensitive,” he said. “A lot of people think it’s a family boat, but then they get in it

and go, ‘Ahh!’” Very encouraging, Andy. As luck (or misfortune) would have it, Tuesday evenings are race nights at the Kanata Sailing Club. From late May until the end of August, club members can sign out a boat and participate in a race out on the river from 6:30-8:30 p.m. where they get in as many short races as they can. Then, it’s snack time, with sailors retreating to the clubhouse for some burgers and beverages. I wasn’t sure how I felt about my first sailing experience being a part of a race, but lightning still hadn’t struck, so it was time to head out onto the water regardless. Andy loaded me up with the rudder (a fin that attaches to the back of the boat for steering) as he grabbed the sails that had been hung up to dry in the clubhouse – an effort made in vain, as they became soaking wet again once we headed outside. I “helped” as best I could, feeding the sail along a line and standing on the front of the boat to tighten a rope. I remarked that it seemed impossible to make sense of the nest of ropes coming from every direction inside the boat, but Andy just smiled and assured me that, “You get used to it.” Wearing a lifejacket and windbreaker that some kind soul had lent to this silly city girl who hadn’t thought to bring warm enough clothing, I helped Andy lead the Albacore into the water, and felt my heart race as he casually told me to

“hop right in.” It wasn’t the most graceful hop, and I rocked the boat a fair bit, but hop I did. Andy wore his trademark rainboots, the insides of which (he claims) have never been wet. All his years of sailing, and he’s never capsized, let alone gotten a stray splash inside his boots. I wasn’t sure I believed him at first, but after seeing how he handled every turn and wave, I became less likely to call him a liar. My job was to be “crew,” to sit in the front of the boat and tack when need be, which means switching the direction of the sails by grabbing ropes spastically, throwing other ropes willy-nilly, and heaving your body across the sailboat as fast as you can. None of this I did particularly quickly (let alone gracefully), but I slowly learned to listen for Andy’s instructions and follow them to the best of my ability. I’ll admit it took me until half-way through our journey before I realized what “tack” meant. I was too busy hoisting ropes and myself around to put a name to my actions. As we got used to the water – which, despite the grey skies and strong rain, was strangely calm – the racecourse was set up, consisting of a series of large, neon orange buoys in a spread-out square that we had to navigate around. We were joined out on the water by a father-and-daughter team in a boat with a neon green sail, and one man soloing a smaller sailboat. SAILING, see 11

Courtney and sailing guide Andrew Wahl maneuver their way around an orange buoy during a sailing race. SAILING, from 10 No one else was willing to brave the torrid elements that day. (To be honest, the rain slowed down to a trickle and it was still quite warm, so really, I’m milking it here.) Jess followed along in a motorboat to document my progress. When the first race began, I’ll admit I wasn’t looking ahead to the orange buoys; in fact, I barely looked out at the water at all. My hands were busily anticipating when they would next be told to leap into action, and my eyes stayed glued to the spot where I would soon be flinging my body – hopefully without sitting on anything sharp and metallic. Seemingly out of nowhere, Andy shouted out victoriously – and it was only then I realized we had won! My first sailboat adventure, and I had won a race! Or rather, Andy had managed to win while lugging around some deadweight, but still. The rain had let up a bit, and my adrenaline was pumping – I was ready to race again. We did a lap or two while the other slowpokes finished up (really, no ego at all here), and then the horn blew to signify the start of race number two. I’d been expecting a whole lot of heeling, which is when the boat flops over on a sharp angle and you have to throw your weight to the other side to even it out. Jess told me she’d had to stretch her whole torso out alongside the boat parallel to the water; an image which had haunted my dreams the evening before. But with the soft wind, there wasn’t much heeling, and Andy mercifully reacted right away to the slight tippings that we did see. While I can’t say with much confidence that I improved any during round two, I did at least take the time to look out and enjoy the view around me. We are so lucky to live next to a body of water as beautiful as the Ottawa River. Andy and I rounded our last buoy with

the other two teams hot on our heels, but we pulled through with next to no wind and had a slow motion cross over the finish line. This time I even got in on the raucous celebrations, and Andy admitted that his hooting and hollering was his competitive side coming through. Apparently mine was too, and I didn’t even know I had one! After two victorious races, I decided it was best to retire on top, and we turned the boat back towards the shore. I thanked Andy for making my first sailing experience so enjoyable, and he said it had been a good time. He even told me that my form was “spot on, a lovely lie that he told quite convincingly. When the hull hit the sand, I hopped out a little more steadily than I had gotten in, and helped to drag the boat ashore. The sun was beginning to set and so was my energy level. After setting up and taking down the sailboat, all the while barraging poor Andy with a million questions, he finally said, “So now you know everything I know. Well, not quite. Not nearly, even. But now I know the feeling of the wind in your hair as you try to determine which way it’s coming from, and the feeling of exhilaration as your sail catches a current. As Andy put it, you’re “communicating with the wind and the water. And Andy was right – the aluminum booms don’t hurt too badly when they whack you in the head, not even when it happens twice in a row. It might be awhile before I get to go sailing again, but the Kanata Sailing Club made me hope that the day will come sooner than later. South Nepean Park became the backdrop for a political rumble on Aug. 10, with the federal minister of Human Resources and Skills Development taken to task by supporters of a national child care program. Minister Diane Finley arrived at the park to mark the fifth anniversary of the federal government’s universal child care benefit, which currently delivers $100 per month to about 1.5 million families for each child under age six. Child care advocates have called for a federal program to provide government-funded care for children across the country. They criticize the current system, saying the money is of little use to parents who can’t find a daycare space for their children. Finley spent time defending the government’s decision to hand out monthly cheques instead of creating a federally-run system. She insisted the issue is choice for parents, and that national daycare would remove that choice. Finley did not address the issue of the cost of a federal program when answering a question about ways to finance a national system.

“It’s parents that decide to have children, not the government.” Minister Diane Finley

Carleton-Mississippi Mills MP Gordon O’Connor, who was on hand to introduce Finley, provided a frank response to a question after the press conference. He said cost is a critical factor in the government’s decision. “I hope I’m not contradicting what Minister Finley said, but we’ve calculated the cost of a national program to be $16 billion a year,” he said. “That’s $16 billion every year. “We can’t afford that. Governments can’t meet every need, everywhere. It’s parents that decide to have children, not the government.” In addition to the mixed message about why the Harper government has declined to create a federal child care program, Finley also had to deal with some vocal critics. As Finley began to speak inside a small tent set up for the occasion, at

Minister Diane Finley at a press conference at South Nepean Park in Barrhaven. Finley was there to mark the fifth anniversary of the federal government’s universal child care benefit. least five people arrived wearing Tshirts bearing the website name ivotechildcare.ca – a grassroots movement to maintain child care spaces for children under the age of five. Decked out in one of the brilliant yellow shirts, Diane O’Neill – who says she has worked for more than 30 years in child care – managed to speak to Finley before she left the tent. “I’m really surprised that you would come here to Barrhaven,” O’Neill said, adding that many Barrhaven parents can’t find daycare space for their children. “There are more and more people waiting for child care in this community.” O’Neill added that “the only daycare spaces being created are forprofit,” which she said affects the quality of care, and asked why the federal government won’t create a national system. In response to O’Neill’s question, Finley said the federal government knows there is a shortage of child care space.

“That’s why we have given an additional $250 million to the provinces; because we’re trying to help,” the minster said. Asked why the federal government doesn’t combine the money transferred to the provinces with tax credits provided to businesses and use the funds to create a national child care program, Finley said a government program wouldn’t work for all families. She said rural families may have no local child care options, and that parents who work nights or weekends may have no centre available to care for their children while they are on the job. The event wrapped up with Finley cutting a cake, with pieces distributed to a crowd of children gathered in the tent for her speech. Some of the people wearing ivotechildcare.ca T-shirts attempted to stand behind Finley to ensure their message was picked up by news cameras, while members of Finley’s staff took up positions next to the minister in an effort to block the cameras’ view.

Jazz concert celebrates musical freedom

SIOBHAN MITCHELL If your kids are curious and crafty, then bring them to try their hands at various heritage trades this Thursday, August 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. and every Thursday thereafter during the month of August at Pinhey’s Point Historic Site. Your youngsters will participate in fun, games, and traditional crafts while learning about what life was like for pioneers. Melissa Lansing, Pinhey’s Point education and interpretation officer is excited to provide this event for local kids because “traditional trades people were once the backbone of rural Ottawa Valley communities.

They provided everyday necessities for everyone in the area.” This week’s workshop will be all about candle making. Participants will learn about the importance of light to pioneers and make their own beeswax and handdipped candles. Each week offers a different trade, so be sure to bring your creative kids to learn about each and every trade. The museum is located at 270 Pinhey’s Point Rd. in Dunrobin, off of 6th Line Road. Cost is $6/child, ages 8-12. For more information about this or any Pinhey’s Point summer programming call 613-832-4347 or visit ottawa.ca/museums.

Fun, froth and frauliens will be on tap for the Oktoberfest festivities this year, according to an announcement by the Rotary Club of Ottawa Kanata Sunrise. According to Dwight Brown, the rotary club has given out $250,000 in fundraising dollars over the years to help fund local and international projects. Oktoberfest is in its fourth year in the capital and is one of the clubs major fundraisers. The three-day event, starting Sept. 30, will be held at the Richmond fairgrounds and will include Bavarian food, live oompah music, performances from local bands and a special appearance from Randy and Lahey of the Trailer Park Boys – who will be “maintaining park behaviour.” “We work hard to make this a community event with local entertainment,” Brown said. The local bands will include – Amos the Transparent, The Bushpilots, Graham Greer of the Barstool Prophets, Rocket Rached, The Fat City 8, Silver Creek, Titan Rain and Old Whiskey Road. Georg Jürgens who was on hand as a representative the

German embassy in Canada, said he was pleased to see planning for the celebrations underway. “Germans love beer as much as Canadians love hockey and canoeing combined,” he said, adding that there are 1,300 breweries in Germany, making 5,000 different brands of beer. “You could have a new beer every day for 13 years without ever repeating,” he said. Kichesippi Beer Co will be providing the ale for the event and is planning on having a special German style beer on tap. Paul Meek, co-owner of the brewery, said they would be bringing in a German dryer, brewer and flying in a special kind of yeast to make Festbier. “We are really pleased to be a part of this great event,” Meek said. Once the refreshments are consumed, festival goers can take part in activities like the sausage and pretzel eating contest and Ottawa’s first ever Masskrugstemmen – a stein holding competition. Day passes are available at the gates for $15 and advance weekend passes are available for $30. For updates and location information visit www. OktoberfestOttawa.com.

In Ontario, having working smoke alarms is not only a good idea — it’s the law. Ottawa Fire Services recommends you install a smoke alarm on every level of your home, and outside your sleeping areas. Test your smoke alarms every month and change the batteries twice a year when you change your clocks. A working smoke alarm could save your life.

Kanata North recreation complex set to open in 2013 JESSICA CUNHA jessica.cunha@metroland.com

Get ready to race Kanata. The second-annual Kanata Race Day is set for Saturday, Sept. 11, an event that will include a five-kilometre race. The run, which aims to raise awareness and funds for the Kanata North recreation centre, will take place at the facility’s location at 4101 Innovation Dr. Craig Gauthier, board director of the new complex and co-chair of the race, said the event is also to help residents get active. “What we’re really trying to do is work on prevention and that’s not a hot topic,” said Gauthier. “If we can get kids, teenagers and families (interested), bring back a community type of living – we all know we work too much, eat badly and hardly exercise – if we can change that to an active lifestyle we can prevent diseases, build on the family model and keep kids off the street.” He said by putting a recreation facility in the community, it will help people live a more active and healthier lifestyle, keep crime down and provide a place where families can have fun. “That’s the awareness we want to bring and help promote with the event,” said Gauthier. The new building will be a state of the art facility, with an eight-lane swimming pool, soccer fields and outdoor skate park. “We’re just as interested in having people feel attachment to the new complex, form part of how they look at Kanata north,” said Glenn Schmelzle, one of the race organizers. “We don’t just want this building to open and have people in the community not know that it’s there, and that

The second annual Kanata Race Day to raise funds and awareness about the new Kanata North recreation centre is set for Saturday, Sept. 11. from day one they can start using it.” Schmelzle works for Building Recreation, the organizing committee for the new recreation complex. “We’re the community initiative, the community people that are involved with the co-ordinating with the city,” he said. The event, which will have a five-kilometre and one-kilometre race, acts as a community fundraiser for the building and a way to raise awareness among residents that a new recreation complex will be available for use sometime in 2013. “The important thing is that we have a facility that is allow-

ing a particular part of our community to get involved that has really had to go outside our community before; the aquatic, swimming community,” said Schmelzle. “Anybody who’s a serious swimmer or into other aquatic activities they have to go to Nepean, they have to downtown. This is the first time that what is now a sizable part of Ottawa has access to the same facilities people in downtown and Nepean and Barrhaven have.” The tenders are underway with the city, and he said it would take about 20 to 22 months to complete the facility from the time the first ground is broken.

Earlier this year, the City of Ottawa said plans to build the recreation complex would be delayed after the National Capital Region YMCA announced it was pulling $6-million in funding for the project. City council told staff to revise the centre’s design to keep within the project’s $43.14-million budget. The project’s architect was forced to shave 1,395 square metres off the complex’s original 9,846-square-metre building, and scrap plans to build family and personal fitness areas, a running track and an expanded cardio area. But most of the original plan was kept intact, which in-

cluded an eight-lane swimming pool and a double gymnasium. “We had a bit of a change that happened last spring with the YMCA backing out as a partner but we’re stronger than ever,” said Schmelzle. “We have a clear direction, we’re heading towards groundbreaking and we’re pleased with how the progress is being made.” Anyone interested in running the five-kilometre or one-kilometre races can register at www. KanataRaceDay.com. The race day will also offer a host of other activities on site, including refreshments and bouncies for the kids. With files from Blair Edwards.

Capitals win berth at world ultimate championship DAN PLOUFFE Ottawa and Toronto are fierce rivals in just about all sports, but in the self-refereed game known for its co-operative nature, a group of 22 ultimate Frisbee players proved the merits of joining forces this past weekend. The Capitals women’s team – made up of an equal number of members from the provincial and national capitals – were rewarded with a trip to next July’s world championships in Japan after winning the Canadian title at the Aug. 11 to 14 nationals event held at Ultimate Parks Inc. in Manotick Station and at Carleton University. “We came together to try to put together a strong team to compete with American teams, to start,” says Carla Di Filippo, noting the Ottawa and Toronto clubs usually only play together in the fall, except in the summer before the worlds, which are held every four years. “You also need a strong team to compete against the west coast. So in an attempt to try to be Team Canada next year, the Capitals formed.” It’s still quite a challenge for a team to live in different cities, but they alternate visits for practice weekends and the captains of each city’s group regularly communicate with one another. “It’s not easy, but we are doing the same practices, we have the same plays, everything’s the same except we’re just

miles apart,” Di Filippo adds. “When we come together, that’s when the magic happens.” That magic was certainly on display at the nationals as the Capitals scored the maximum 15 points in all their preliminary-round games en route to a 5-0 record. They then downed Vancouver’s Traffic 14-12 to earn an easier path to the final, where the rematch with Traffic produced a convincing 15-6 victory for the Ontario ladies. Ottawa occupied half of the podium’s three steps in the open division, with the Ottawa-Toronto GOAT team taking silver behind Vancouver’s Furious George, and the Phoenix earning bronze. Over 1,400 players competed on 68 teams in the nationals five divisions, which also included the mixed category – where Montreal and Vancouver teams took gold and silver – and junior, where Vancouver’s Shock topped Toronto’s Overdrive. The tournament returned to its Ottawa roots for the 25th edition of the event that began with 10 teams in 1987. “Ottawa is the best place to hold a national tournament,” says Di Filippo of Toronto. “Having UPI – a set of fields made for ultimate – is amazing. It should always be here. It’s a great venue, there’s friendly people, and the fields are the best in the country.”

The east division teams were the Whitby Eagles, Oakville Angels, Ancaster Blizzard and Port Perry Angels. The west division teams were the Kitchener Klassics, Chepstow Diamonds, Milverton Millwrights and Windsor Wildcats. There was a good crowd on hand on Friday evening, Aug. 5, for the opening game between the Pirates and the Wildcats and they were rewarded for their hometown loyalty as the Pirates came back from a 5-2 deficit at the end of the fifth inning to end up winning by an 8-5 score. On the Saturday morning, the Pirates faced off against the Eagles and came away with a huge 1-0 victory. After the Pirates lost against the Diamonds, the team faced a rematch against the Wildcats. This time the Windsor squad came out on top, ending the tournament and also the season for the Pirates. But despite this loss, the Pirates finished this provincial championship tournament with a record of two wins and two losses. This ended up earning the Pirates fifth place overall in the tournament which was the highest finish for

any east division team. The gold medal in this provincial championship tournament went to the Milverton Millwrights, although it went right down to the wire. Milverton could have won the gold medal by defeating Klassics in the championship game early on Sunday afternoon, but Kitchener came through with an 11-4 victory, handing Milverton its first loss of the tournament. This meant that there had to be another game later in the afternoon since Kitchener needed to beat Milverton twice to claim the provincial crown. However, in this second game, Milverton Millwrights came out on top, winning by a 9-8 score and taking the provincial title. Both of these teams – Milverton Millwrights and Kitchener Klassics – will now be advancing to the Eastern Canadians championship which is being held in Quebec later this month. Milverton ended up as the gold medal champs in this provincial championship tournament. Kitchener took the silver medals while the bronze medals went to the Diamonds.

Back to School Top back-to-school items are fun and functional kindergarten to Grade 1, and features a QWERTY keyboard, functioning mouse and is even bilingual. “It’s not overwhelming and links to games instead of the Internet,” said Ruddy. “For $35, you can introduce your child to this technology and know that it will be fun and interactive.” Raskullz Backpacks are also the newest trend to replace the traditional backpack. Ruddy said the backpacks feature a variety of 3D characters including a shark, cat, rabbit, unicorn, horse, dinosaur or gorilla – and even come with matching lunchboxes and luggage. Ruddy added backpack accessories are also big this year – in addition to Kachooz Pencil Toppers featuring fuzzy friends called “Moops.” For older kids, Ruddy said Vex Robotics will keep science-minded children busy. “It’s a starter kit to make a robot from scratch,” said Ruddy. “Educators can get these, and it’s a good way to inject life into science or math. You can create any kind of robot that you like.” Writing and craft tools like Crayola Dry Erase

Learning and Elmer’s Extreme Glue Stick are also popular during back to school time this year. Ruddy said the glue is appropriate for older kids who are working on projects using paper, wood, cardboard – even plastics and metals. “The glue stick is very tough and durable,” Ruddy said. “And glue stick is on everyone’s back to school list.” For more information on what’s hot this year for back to school, visit the What’s Up magazine’s website at http://www.whatsupfamilies.com/ and click on “What’s New.”

For Erin Ruddy, fun yet functional is the biggest trend in toys this year as children head back to school. The editor-in-chief of What’s Up - Canada’s family magazine – offers some toy tips in the latest issue that range from a classic backpack with a modern twist to children’s laptops. “They’re hands-on, fun and different,” said Ruddy. “We’re going with that theme of trying to lure and excite kids with things that are colourful and bright, and disguise that they’re learning.” One of the toys Ruddy highlights is the new Lego Duplo play with letters, where children ages two to five can familiarize themselves with numbers and letters while playing with big colourful bricks. “There are other ways to get your kids familiar with letters instead of writing them over and over again,” she said. Children can also start learning their computer and technological skills through the Brilliant Creations Laptop, new from Vtech. Ruddy said the laptop is meant for children from

Back to School How to take effective notes (MS) A student’s success in school is measured by the assignments completed and tests he takes. The students who garner the best grades and do well in class are often those who are effective listeners and note-takers.

she should be ready to learn. That means silencing mobile devices and gearing the mind toward the lessons. Not every lecture will be exhilarating, so students should make a conscious effort to pay attention. Limiting distractions can help.

Professor Dennis Jertz of Seton Hall University has said that taking lecture notes effectively is one of the skills students must learn to make the transition from high school to college careers. Note-taking is also necessary in the business world, making it a worthwhile skill to learn.

• Students should consider writing notes on one side of the page so that they can each be laid out side-by-side. Looseleaf paper works well, or notes can be typed and printed out. • Students should develop their own method of abbreviations and symbols to cut down on the amount of writing needed. Notes needn’t be in full sentences; phrases are equally effective.

Despite its importance in higher learning, not much study has gone into the correlation between note-taking and performance improvement. As a result, statistics supporting the importance of effective note-taking do not exist. But it stands to reason that the student who takes good notes, and studies well from them, has a sporting chance to improve his or her grades over others with poor notes.

• If a professor writes something on a chalkboard, puts text up on a projector or repeats something several times, it should definitely be written down. There is a good chance that information will be on the test.

Learning Note-taking It may not seem as such, but note-taking can almost be a lesson all its own. If only students could enroll in Note-Taking 101. Some elementary and high-school teachers attempt to teach strategies for taking notes, including developing outlines, but many students still struggle to maintain the essentials as they move through school. It can be confusing knowing just how much to write down without creating a novel or having notes so scant that they provide little information when it comes time to study.

Improving Listening Skills No matter what method of note-taking is used, adequate listening skills are necessary to take effective notes. This helps students transfer what the professor is saying into ideas that can be put down on paper. Staring off into space or having your mind drift can cause a student to miss out on key parts of a lecture. To improve note-taking skills, a student must first improve listening skills. • Sit up closer to the teacher or professor. This enables eye-to-eye contact that may help a student focus. It may also trigger visual clues to a professor to gauge whether the class is catching on or missing what’s being taught. It’s also advantageous from a practical standpoint. It enables students to better hear what’s going on. If the professor is garbled or inaudible when sitting far away, moving closer is essential, especially in a large lecture hall. • Remove distractions. When a student enters the classroom, he or Pre-K to Grade 12 Grammar

Reading Study Skills

• Students may want to review note-taking strategies with one another. Maybe there is a successful method employed by one student that he or she can share with classmates. • Rewriting or typing notes helps ingrain the information in the brain more than simply rereading it. Note-taking is an important skill many students should make the effort to learn. Improved test scores can lead to a higher grade point average. This, in turn, can help with success in school and beyond. BS117028

• Use an assistance device. Students who are prone to “zoning out” may want to ask permission to use a voice recorder. This way if key elements of the lesson are missed, they can be played back. This method also helps students fill in gaps when taking or studying notes.

489657

There are many systems of note-taking that a student can learn. These include using graphic representations to map out interconnected concepts. Outlines or charts can group terminology together with related ideas. There are other techniques that use cue words to trigger recollection of facts and dates. Mnemonic devices help recall information. Students can experiment with different methods until they find a system that works well and offers measurable success.

• Charles Kettering, an American engineer and inventor, said, “There is a great difference between knowing a thing and understanding it.” When jotting down notes, a student who discovers that something seems unclear can ask for clarification or make a point to research that component further.

Keys To Note-taking

TINY TUTU’S • JAZZ • BALLET • LYRICAL HIP HOP • GLEE CLUB • JAZZ FUNK • MUSICAL THEATRE SINGING & MOVEMENT • BIRTHDAY PARTIES

Once listening skills have improved, students can go onto to other note-taking pointers. • Sequencing material is important, so notes should be dated and numbered. If references are made to chapters that correlate to the textbook, jot those down so they can strengthen the notes.

Back to School Pros and cons to learning in a digital age (MS) The world has quickly become digital, and the younger generations are leading the pack with technology that just may make some other items obsolete. As pre-teens and teenagers routinely turn to digital devices for entertainment and schoolwork, the face of education may change as well. In the past students toted notebooks (the paper kind), pencils, pens, and folders to school. Today, students carry digital devices like computer tablets, notebooks (the electronic kind), smart phones, and other digital devices to the classroom. Furthermore, texting and instant messaging have replaced traditional modes of casual conversation. Another item that may go the way of the dinosaur is the printed book. Students can now carry an entire library worth of reading material on a slim e-reader device or on the many other evolving tablet-type machines. There may be a day when one no longer browses the aisles of the school library for a book, but only downloads the text instantly when needed. Some textbooks are already offered in digital format, and some school systems and teachers may opt for the convenience of digital devices. Little data exists as to just how many schools have policies allowing the use of cell phones and other digital devices in class. In the United States, a 2009 U.S. Department of Education survey indicates only 4 percent of public-school teachers say a handheld device is available in the classroom every day. But things can change in a short period of time. Digital Advantages There are many advantages to going digital. Typing tends to go faster for adept keyboard users, which many youngsters have become since they’ve essentially grown up with computers in the household. This makes notetaking easier. When notes and assignments are saved to a computer, there’s less likelihood of them getting lost, especially if important files are routinely backed up. Data saved on a computer can easily be manipulated into a number of different formats, potentially making it easier to study. Bodies of text can be transformed into charts or pie graphs with many word pointeofgrace.com to find out why we are the

processing programs. Students can cut and paste important quotes or examples into essays and the like, saving time on homework. In terms of streamlining backpacks, digital readers and other devices eliminate heavy books and notebooks. This can be seen as a big plus to students who have grown accustomed to carrying around 20+ pounds on their backs from a very young age. As many teachers turn to online resources, such as e-mailing and posting assignments on a personal Web site, students almost have to keep up with the times with some sort of tool that has Internet access. Digital Disadvantages On the other side of the equation, going digital does have some disadvantages. The decline of penmanship is one of them. In a digital era, people are less likely to write letters by hand or keep up with penmanship in other ways. Some children don’t know what cursive handwriting is and may never learn how to sign their names in “script,” which was a common lesson for other generations. While digital communication does promote social interactions on some levels, there are some who argue that spending too much time staring at a screen and keyboard compromises the social aspect of going to school and learning in a classroom. Today’s youth are less likely to “talk,” choosing to “LOL”and “TTYL” through texting. Having a wealth of information available on the Internet opens up students to many disreputable sources of content. Some common online encyclopedias are written and edited by regular people who may not have the accurate details of events. Also, having content that is easily cut and pasted opens up the temptation for plagiarism and blurs the lines of how to attribute information to a source correctly. Digital devices may be great learning tools, but they also offer a number of distractions to students. When a student is supposed to be taking notes on a laptop in the classroom, he or she might be downloading music, updating social networking sites, streaming video, or checking celebrity gossip. Classrooms are evolving and so are students. Learning is very different from the way older generations may have learned. Whether the presence of digital technology helps or hinders remains open for debate. BS117018

Here are some helpful tips to get your kids back on track just in time for back to school.

Plan your menu together—This is a great way to get your children excited about meal time. Now that they better understand how to read food labels, you can create family recipes and enjoy wholesome foods together. Take time to discuss and plan weekly meals with your kids to avoid unhealthy last minute food choices and provide something they will enjoy.

nutrients to look for and what ingredients to avoid, they will have the power to make healthier choices at school and with friends. A great way to educate your kids is to take them grocery shopping and have them make some selections. Teach them to choose items with less sodium and more vitamins, and show them how to find products that are enriched with DHA, an omega-3 fat that’s important for brain development. You can use a carton of Dairy Oh! milk as a good example to help with label reading and choosing foods with DHA.

Some of the more common means in which a child is victimized by cyberbullying include repeated e-mails or instant messages, posting real or doctored images online, sharing intimate information against a child’s will and encouraging other children to share in the bullying. Safety tips for young Web surfers

(MS) Over the last 10 to 15 years, the Internet has become established as a must-have in homes. But as useful and convenient as the Internet can be, it can also prove dangerous, particularly for young kids. Parents have every right to worry when their kids go online. However, there are ways to safeguard kids from some of the Internet’s ills.

• Emphasize the protection of personal information. Many Web sites ask visitors to fill out certain forms when visiting. When discussing the Internet with kids, tell them to inform an adult whenever they visit a Web site that requests they fill out a form or questionnaire before continuing to the site. Caution kids against sharing too much information, which could potentially make them susceptible to

We put children and

online predators. • Preach caution in chat rooms. First and foremost, tell them to never share their address, full name or phone number with anyone in the chat room. Also, ensure kids never arrange to meet up with anyone from chat rooms. If kids do make a few online friends they want to meet in person, always be sure to accompany them to any such meetings and insist

on meeting their new friends’ parents as well. When meetings do take place, they should always be in a public place, such as a library. • Keep the computer in the family room, where Mom and Dad can monitor kids’ online usage without peering over their shoulders. If kids have their own computers, then parents might never truly BS117026 know what their kids are doing online.

At the Katimavik Community Nursery School we feel preschool is an important milestone in a child’s life as they begin their life long path toward independence. Nursery school is another significant stepping stone you won’t want them to miss out on. For many families, it’s the first time a child leaves his/her parents for an extended period of time and for that reason many parents are filled with mixed emotions about it. A few responses we have heard from parents anticipating the big day are: “She’s not going to let me go. She won’t let me out of her sight.” “I can’t wait for him to start nursery school. He’s driving me crazy at home!” “I’m so sad just thinking about my last one going off to preschool.” “My son can’t wait to go, and I’m so excited for him.” Some parents feel like they’re doing their children a favor by sending them to nursery school, while others feel like they’re abandoning them. One of the biggest developmental tasks children will face in life is separating from their parents and standing on their own two feet. This is an ongoing challenge that takes up a good portion of an individual’s life, so why not give them every advantage in

learning these skills as early as possible. Some people look upon preschool as an option or a luxury, while others think it’s unfair to send children to nursery school when so many years of schooling are ahead of them. This opportunity is not only for the child to find his/her own individuality and space but also for other family members to have some time and space of their own. Everyone deserves a little “me” time. A good pre-school offers children many valuable experiences. Children become independent and are able to nourish their amazing curiosity and appetite for learning. Even the best home can’t always provide the tremendous stimulation young minds need. The essence of life is socializing and getting along with others. You can’t develop those skills without “mixing it up” with different personalities. Last, but not least, nursery school assists in the preparation for kindergarten. Parents are providing a valuable service for their child when they find them a quality, affordable nursery school and then encourage them to go forth into this new and exciting adventure of becoming confident and independent little people. If you need further information about nursery school or are looking to register please contact Katimavik Co-operative Nursery School at 613 860 0912 or check us out at www.kcns.ca.

City councillor proposes smoking ban at public parks LAURA MUELLER laura.mueller@metroland.com

Coun. Stephen Blais is hoping for a truly smoke-free Ottawa. The Cumberland Ward councillor will be asking the city to ban smoking in public parks and beaches, as well as on patios before 8 p.m. “The health of Ottawans and the health of our children has to be our number-one priority,” Blais said. The idea came to him after a meal with friends on a patio interrupted by a nearby smoker this spring. Blais, who has asthma, was also frustrated by smoke lingering in a park where he was playing with his toddler. “We’ve all had incidents like this,” he said. Second-hand smoke is known to be more harmful than actually smoking, Blais said, as it releases higher amounts of toxins and nicotine into the air. Young people aged 12 to 19 are most at risk, with an average exposure rate that is twice the national average (18.1 per cent), Blais said. Children also breath faster, so their lungs take in more toxins, he added, and the effects of developing lungs can be more severe. Blais is asking both Ottawa Public Health and bylaw services to report back to council on how feasible the idea is and if there would be any costs associated

STAFF Former Ottawa mayor Jim Durrell will help shape the city’s policing strategy as the newest member of the police services board. Durrell, who served as mayor from 1985 to ’91, will sit on the board for a three-year term, effective July 12. After his tenure as mayor, Durrell left to become president of the Ottawa Senators. He is now working in the private sector as president and owner of Capital Dodge Chrysler Jeep, while also serving as the chair of the Ottawa Convention Centre and the Ottawa International Airport’s boards of directors and sitting on the of Business Development Bank of Canada’s board of directors. “Mr. Durrell’s well-established relationships with key community partners as well as his governance experience and business acumen will be tremendous assets to the Police Services Board. We are very pleased to welcome him to the board”, police services board chair Coun. Eli El-Chantiry said in a statement.

with it. That information will be available in time for council to include it in the 2012 budget debates before the new year, with a view to putting the ban in place by next summer, if council votes in favour of it. Ottawa wouldn’t be the first city to take that step. The province of Alberta banned smoking on patios in 2008, and beaches and parks in Hamilton and Niagara are smokefree, Blais said. He doesn’t anticipate that the ban would be too onerous to enforce, because enforcement officers already visit parks and beaches to keep tabs on a number of regulations. A ban on restaurant patios would be even easier to implement, Blais said, because it would simply be an extension of the existing restaurant smoking ban the city put in place in 2001 to ban smoking in bars, restaurants and gaming rooms. The idea to allow smoking on patios after 8 p.m. is up for debate, Blais said. He was focused on protecting children from second-hand smoke, and there are generally fewer children on patios at night, but an all-out ban might be a good idea, Blais said. “This is a starting point,” he said. So far, Blais said feedback on the idea has been “fairly good,” with some people telling him the idea doesn’t go far enough, and others saying it goes too far. Blais will put his idea forward at the next city council meeting on Aug. 25.

Food cupboard holds backpack drive Food bank needs school supplies

NATIONAL SHOW JUMPING

KANATA FOOD CUPBOARD Many families don’t have to worry about having enough money to buy back-to-school supplies for their children. But some families don’t have the financial means to fully equip their kids with the supplies they need. Last year in Kanata, the Kanata Food Cupboard helped out about 50 families, which included 129 children and four adults that were returning to school. There will be many others that just don’t come to us for help, as they feel embarrassed to admit that they cannot do it, they will try and sell something that they have in order to get the money for supplies. There is many ways that the community can help these families, you can drop off the items at any of the grocery store bins in Kanata, or stop by the food

Debbie Ratcliffe from Ottawa, has enjoyed every moment she has been at H’Art of Ottawa.

H’Art wait times increase EDDIE RWEMA eddie.rwema@metroland.com

Dwindling funds and lack of space have increased waiting times for adults with developmental disability planning to join the visual arts studio and literacy program at the Bronson Centre. H’Art of Ottawa is struggling to stay afloat and focused after the United Way, the program’s major funder, announced earlier this year it wasn’t going to continue funding the organization. “It’s been recent and the impact hasn’t hit us on the level that we haven’t been able to manage,” said Carmel Whittle, instructor and board member of H’Art Ottawa. She said waiting list periods have grown longer because the studio doesn’t have the space to accommodate everybody. “It is hard to accommodate everybody, because we don’t want to move into a situation where we can’t sustain the growth,” said Whittle. H’Art was opened in 2002 in response to need for meaningful programs for people with developmental disabilities. “We don’t focus a lot on disabilities here,” she said. “It is about the abilities, what they are capable of doing and once here they do it.” Currently, more than 40 artists participate in a regular basis. “Having a waiting list is always an issue for people in the community wondering when they can get in.” Whittle said the program’s objective is become self sustaining eventually

and to be able to cultivate a strong community of people with different disabilities who can come and attend the program regularly. The remainder of their funding now comes from the sales of art and exhibitions. “If we stay stable and grounded on what we have, then at least we are servicing a very small portion of the community, though ultimately our goal would be to be servicing as many people as we can in the community,” said Whittle. The program uses an innovative approach that allows staff and volunteers to work with the artists to develop self expression, independence and entrepreneurial skills. “Most of them come-in with no art background at all and while here we support them and guide them.” Each artist at the H’Art studio participates in group discussions, as well as self-focused activities such as journaling, drawing and painting. “Its extraordinary being around them,” said Whitter. Supported by instructors and volunteers, artists learn to transform their ideas and emotions into written words and art. Debbie Ratcliffe, from Nepean, has been with the program for five years now and said she had never imagined becoming an artist whose artwork is hanged in peoples walls. “I now look at art in a completely different way. I look at other people’s creative art and just love it,” said Ratcliffe.

Peace of Mind has never come easier. Or for less.

Kanata residents will be able to enjoy a “feast” of organic food from across the region as part of the Feast of Fields event taking place at the Canada Agriculture Museum on Sept. 11. “The idea of Feast of Fields is to bring together the best of organic farming for a one day event,” said Chris Penton, the Feast of Fields co-ordinator. “When you show up, people will be charged for a ticket and with that ticket you can get a gourmet meal served by chefs. It’s pretty high-quality, high-end stuff.” The event, hosted by Canadian Organic Growers Ottawa, pairs teams of organic farmers and chefs in the Ottawa Valley to prepare organic food grown across the region. In addition to a showcase of organic farmers and their products, participants will have the opportunity to buy some of the farmers’ organic products. “We have a diversity of regional representation,” said Colin Lundy, who provides outreach and information on organic growing to farmers in the community. “We also have a real mix of chefs that are experienced in The Feast of Fields event

and those who aren’t. There should be a lot of diversity and new things.” In addition to organic vegetables, meats and fruits, visitors will also be able to enjoy organic desserts prepared by various local bakeries. Greta Kuger, a local farmer who has taken part in Feast of Fields since 1996, said the event allows farmers to show people what they’re growing and encourages farmers to try new things. “I always encourage farmers to come ... and to have something on hand to taste,” Kuger said. Rosie Nash, a chef at 107 Fourth Avenue, a wine bar and cafe in the Glebe, is participating for the first time in Feast of Fields and said she’s excited to learn more about the event and to participate in the community. “We’re looking forward to being a part of it this year,” Nash said. Feast of Fields will take place at the Canada Agriculture Museum on Sept. 11 from noon to 4 p.m. Visitors can find out how to purchase their tickets in advance until Sept. 5 for $60 online at www.feastoffields.ca . Ticket prices will increase to $70 on and after Sept. 6 to 11. Children under 12 will be admitted free with a participating adult.

THE WAR AMPS A group of young amputees from the city’s west end helped The War Amps celebrate 30 years of child amputee (CHAMP) seminars in Ottawa. The children, including Cooper Bradley, 5, from Kanata, took part in a show and tell session, showing their standard and recreational artificial limbs to the group. Meagan Williams, a 13-year-old Richmond girl, showed her hockey device and guitar pick device. Cooper received a CHAMP Ambassador Certificate for conducting a War Amps Playsafe presentation to his classmates. The seminar covered subjects of interest for all age groups, including the latest developments in artificial limbs, parenting an amputee child, dealing with teasing and bullying, learning to drive and the importance for amputees of staying active. Seminars are life-changing events, particularly for first-time attendees. “Meeting others with exactly the same concerns, and seeing how they have overcome them, has a profound effect on how they regard their amputation,” says CHAMP director Lucie Waddell. CHAMP and all its programs are funded solely through public support of The War Amps Key Tag and Address Label Service. For more information, call 1-800 250-3030 or visit waramps.ca.
