At least 40 homes in Beaverbrook were flooded following a heavy rainfall on Sunday, July 24.

A number of residents in the area have also reported having their home flood insurance revoked.

Sydney Hall, one of 16 residents on Leacock Drive who suffered a flooded basement on Sunday, said this is her second flood this year – she had one back in May – and it was the sixth since she moved in to her house in 1985.

“We had no problems until (the year) 2000,” she said.

“Our insurance was cut off after the second flood.”

Hall had a backwater flow valve installed last year to mitigate basement flooding.

But it didn’t help that Sunday.

“It (water) came up the drain, the valves didn’t work,” said Hall.

“It was like a fountain.”

She said about four to five inches of water flooded her basement, a mixture of sewage and ground water.

Because she has no flood insurance, Hall said she has to clean her basement herself every time it floods.

“I’m getting too old for this,” she said, adding she has to wait for the water level to stop rising before she gets out her shop vacuum to suck up the excess liquid.

A Glen Cairn man is fighting a decision by a local tennis club to revoke his membership.

She bought an air cleaner and was having an air tester come to check the quality of air in her home this week.

“I’m worried about mould,” she said.

Anything she stores in her basement has to be packed away in Rubbermaid boxes, she said. She also installed shelves to keep items off the ground.

“I will not build anything down there until we know the problem has been solved,” said Hall.

Frank and Dorothy Quinn’s home on Leacock Drive also flooded on July 24, the third time since moving in to their home.

Their house also had a backwater flow valve installed.

Frank visited his neighbours on Leacock Drive, Pentland Crescent, Tiffany Crescent and Leacock Way to see if other homeowners had experienced flooding.

He found a total of 40 homes with basement flooding, he said, and that only included houses where people answered their door.

“Every time it rains now we worry about another flood,” said Hall.

OPEN HOUSE Hall and the Quinns were among around 40 residents who attended an open house session on the upcoming sewer reconstruction plan for Kanata north at the Mlacak Centre on Tuesday, July 26.

Work is set to start this fall on an overhaul of the sanitary sewer system but it can’t start fast enough for a number of the residents who have been flooded at least once this year after heavy rainfalls.

A number of attendees watched apprehensively as rain fell outside while the sun was still shining during the meeting.

“I was watching the rain through the window the whole time,” said Dorothy.

Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson said she was unsure why the backwater flow valves weren’t working properly but suggested they could possibly be blocked, which would keep the device from closing properly, allowing for water to come up through basement drains.

She said residents could try flushing

it out themselves to clean the backwater flow valve.

“Do a laundry with a lot of soapy water,” said Wilkinson. “You just want to make sure you have enough volume going through to clean it out.”

She asked residents who had the valves installed and still experienced flooding to leave comments with her staff so they could figure out the problem.

One resident said they saw gravel in the valve, which could cause it to not close properly.

Dorothy said it costs around $80 to have the valve company come in and check if the device is working properly.

“We do need to make sure that those valves are working. Were they incorrectly put in or is there something else causing that problem?” said Wilkinson.

“If (residents) have three to four inches of water in their basement that should not be happening.”

Gordon Henderson, a member of the Kanata Beaverbrook Community Association executive, said he’s looking forward to seeing the fixes implemented.

His home on Tiffany Crescent experienced seepage during a heavy 30-minute downpour about three weeks ago.

“It could have been worse,” he said.

“The city is doing the right thing and this has been in the works for a while obviously. They noted the big flooding that took place over a year ago, that there was a problem, and the city has been sending out vehicles, special trucks to clean out the sewer.

“Nobody wants water in their basement.”

SEWER FIXES The sanitary sewer reconstruction includes fixes to the systems on Leacock Way, Leacock Drive, Beaverbrook Road and Teron Road. * Two new sanitary sewer systems will be installed, one on Teron and one on Beaverbrook roads. * Two sanitary sewer systems will be replaced, one on Leacock Drive and Beaverbrook Road. * A new watermain will be installed on Beaverbrook. * One storm sewer will be relocated on the corner of Beaverbrook and Leacock Drive. * Two sewer systems will be abandoned, one near Kingsford Court and one at the corner of Beaverbrook and Teron.

“I’m glad to see it happening,” said Wilkinson, adding she wants to see the work finished by the end of the fall.

She added once the fixes are in place staff will be looking to see if there are any additional steps that need to be taken.

“If we find additional work that needs to get done we’ll have to ask for additional funding,” said Wilkinson. “That’s not going to be the end of it. I want them to look hard at the drainage situation.”

Max Ross, a senior engineer with the City of Ottawa, said one of the main reasons for the flooding is the current sewer line is too shallow, too small and was plugged in certain areas.

He said the new one will be “built to code,” and slightly bigger and steeper to help redirect the waste water.

Residents wanted to know how much the sewer capacity will be increased by, but no one had the exact answer.

Brian Graham, a consultant with CH2M, the firm the city hired to design the new system, said sewers will have “increased capacity since it has a larger diameter,” but neither he nor Ross could give a concrete number.

Graham added it was a pretty straightforward assignment.

“It’s not downtown Ottawa with 100year-old pipes,” he said. “It’s been an interesting assignment and we’re looking forward to seeing it built.”

Residents also wanted to know how traffic would be impacted if construction starts in the fall, just in time for yellow school buses to get back on the road.

“It is going to be a problem,” said Ross.

“It is going to be slow-moving.”

“But people will be able to get through,” added Wilkinson.

INSURANCE RELIEF Wilkinson said once the reconstruction is finished she will be talking to individual insurance companies in an effort to lower costs for residents.

“Once the work is done, I want to go to them and show them what we’ve done,” she said. “I want to get the work underway and then go to the insurance companies.”

Many residents have had their flood insurance premiums or deductibles raised, and in the case of Hall, revoked completely.

“I had a friend that had it happen to,” said Wilkinson. “If you get a claim three times on anything (insurance companies) tend to cut you off.”

Wilkinson said residents can talk to their insurance companies first and tell them the kind of work that has been done to mitigate future flooding.

If the company refuses to lower the insurance costs, she said she will step in and speak to them.

“I’m willing to talk to (insurance) companies of residents,” said Wilkinson.

The fixes to the sanitary sewer will not address groundwater issues or storm water issues, she added.

However, with the reconstruction finished, sanitary sewer water should not be getting into the storm water systems.

For people who have groundwater flooding issues, Wilkinson said there are a number of things homeowners can do to fix the problem: • Make sure eaves troughs direct water far away from the house. If an eaves trough ends too close to the property, water can pool against the house and work its way in through cracks in the foundation.

• Use a sump pump to redirect ground water away from the house.

• Raise the land around the house so water doesn’t collect against the foundation.

Glen Cairn Tennis Club revokes man’s membership

The City of Ottawa is refusing to comment or intervene after a Glen Cairn man was banned from a publicly-owned tennis club run by a volunteer board.

Josef Klokotzky, a 10-year member of the Glen Cairn Tennis Club, past executive member and coach, said he lost his membership after its executive accused him of coaching players on the courts.

The club wanted exclusive rights to arrange lessons on the

four city-owned courts through its own club pro.

In April, Klokotzky was forced to sign a membership agreement saying he would not “coach, teach, instruct or give lessons of any kind on club property.” If Klokotzky didn’t sign, he wouldn’t be allowed to play.

Klokotzky said his membership was cancelled without following the rules set out in the tennis club’s constitution, which states there must be “two-weeks notice of motion to expel” and that the member in question is “given the right to appear on his own behalf ” at a directors meeting.

He said neither of those conditions were followed.

“This is happening on city property, I don’t understand at this point,” said Klokotzky.

He sent the executive an email in response saying he

did not accept his expulsion and would continue to play on the courts.

Klokotzky was removed from the Castlefrank Road courts by police when he returned.

A group of 18 families who are members of the club signed a petition asking the club to reverse its decision.

The club’s president, Diane Brazeau, said the executive wouldn’t comment.

The city said it has no say over how the club operates, even though it’s city-owned, adding that each club sets its own rules, which are contained in its constitution.

“We’re not going to publicly comment on internal matters,” said a city manager.

Klokotzky coached at the GCTC for the past three years, including junior players. He created the juniors’ tournament at the club.

After signing the agreement not to coach other players, he was seen on the courts with former students on four separate occasions, according to letters he received signed by the president and vice-president of the club. The letters stated he was “seen” or “observed” on the courts with former students – which the executive then interpreted to mean he was coaching, and thus breaking the rules, said Klokotzky.

“I was hitting the ball with one of my previous students,” said Klokotzky about one incident on June 2. “His father was present. We played a match, I didn’t give lessons. I followed their rules, I didn’t give any instruction. We just played our match.”

Klokotzky was playing with Rithvik Achyuthan, 11, a former student from the previous year. Arun, Rithvik’s father, said he was present during the entire match.

“Josef and my son were hitting the ball,” said Arun, who signed a petition with 18 other families to have Klokotzky reinstated as an instructor. “It was not a lesson, he was just hitting the ball. The president came and said no lessons were allowed and that we had to leave.”

“After that also on another day, my son and Josef were hitting the ball on a regular day.

That day I could not go with my son to play with him. That’s why Josef was playing,” said Arun.

“The president came and told him again that he wasn’t allowed to give lessons.

“He (Rithvik) was quite upset about all these things because he’s only 11 years old.”

A letter hand-delivered to Klokotzky on June 8 said he was breaking the rules set out in his conditional membership and that he was disrespectful and threatening to an executive member.

The letter stated his membership was being revoked, effective immediately.

CLOSED MEETING A number of members gathered at the clubhouse on Thursday, July 28, for what they thought was an open meeting between members and the executive.

Instead, a closed-door meeting was held at the Hazeldean branch of the Ottawa Public Library between Klokotzky, the executive, a city mediator and a select few members.

“It’s not the same,” said one club member who has been playing at the courts for 33 years.

A number of members expressed their frustration at being barred from the meeting.

The meeting was called in an effort to resolve the issue between Klokotzky and the executive.

A member who attended the hour-and-a-half meeting said the only result was that the executive had one week, until Thursday, Aug. 4, to make a final decision on whether or not Klokotzky’s membership would be reinstated.

President of the GCTC Diane Brazeau said she couldn’t comment on anything to do with the situation “because it’s very confidential.”

“I can’t really disclose anything at this point. We have another week to make a decision at this point,” she said.

City’s silence over ban disturbing

T

he City of Ottawa is strangely mum over a decision by the Glen Cairn Tennis Club to ban one of its members.

Earlier this year, the club revoked the membership of a Glen Cairn man for breaking one of its rules by supposedly coaching another member.

Josef Klokotzky says he wasn’t teaching, only playing a game with a friend’s son, a story supported by both the boy and his father.

The tennis club refuses to comment on the ban, which is its right.

The city has also chosen not to comment, but that isn’t its right.

The Glen Cairn Tennis Club is not a private club — it was built using municipal dollars and it is owned by the City of Ottawa.

When a taxpayer — you know, one of the people who pumps money into the city coffers so they can build things like swimming pools, sports arenas, and tennis clubs — is banned from a municipally-owned facility, they should be able to appeal the decision to the city.

The city also has the responsibility to address the issue in a public forum and explain the reasons for its decisions.

Instead, the city dismisses the situation as “an internal matter” that must be dealt with by the club and under the rules of its constitution.

Internal matter?

Hello — city-owned courts.

Taxpayer dollars.

And never mind the fact that the no-coaching rule is not contained in the club’s constitution.

On the face of it, the dispute between Klokotzky and the club appears to be a he-said she-said situation.

We’ve only been presented with one side of the story, as the club refuses to make any comment.

But the city should not have that luxury.

Instead, it appears the city is acting as a mediatior in the dispute, but is allowing the volunteerrun board to make the final decision.

Yes the club should be allowed to operate and maintain the court, as stewards for the City of Ottawa.

But in the event the club executive chooses to ban one of the members, the city should act as a final court of appeal.

And in the interests of transparency, the city must explain those reasons in public.

How to kill your intuition

D

espite and because of claims that we make the bulk of our decisions intuitively and within a matter of milliseconds, I am on a purposeful quest to quash my intuition. It hasn’t served me well, it’s expensive, and it needs to be put in its place.

The thing is I’m a notorious joiner.

Nothing gets my blood going like signing up for things. Oh, the sweet thrill of the registration process! In the past three years I have forked over hundreds of dollars for the following: French classes (twice); cooking classes; teacher’s college application fees (three times); ashtanga yoga; swimming lessons; boot camp; gymnastics boot camp; and several trial gym memberships.

Sadly, I have yet to see the inside of a GoodLife Fitness, I have plateaued at an intermediate level in French since 1999, I am not a qualified teacher, and I still don’t know how to cook or swim proficiently.

My husband, the more reflective within our spousal unit, always attempts to curb my impulsivity. But I am too quick to fork over my nonrefundable registration fee, which is

The absence of temerity has also given my bank balance a boost. First, I’ve come to realize that camp showers are expensive and more often than not unnecessary. Second, instead of succumbing to daily Rogers-On-Demand movie requests and fee-per-use swims at the public pool, I’ve discovered many free or cheap day trip vacation alternatives for me and the kids.

Finally, I’ve foregone debit and credit card purchases, prudently crafting a budget and determining how much cash I will require each week for groceries, toiletries and miscellaneous extras. The “pain” of handing over cold, hard cash which has been carefully considered in advance is much more real than the delayed anguish that often comes with perusing a Visa statement.

As a result, I’m more cautious with my spending. I delete Groupon ads, and yes, I am that woman who returns things to the cashier at point-of-purchase because I’ve gone over my selfimposed limit.

Ninety-one neighbourhoods are being dissected thanks to a University of Ottawa investigation.

The Ottawa Neighbourhood Study – an ongoing project that breaks down each neighbourhood’s health, socio-economic factors and other characteristics – received a $75,000 cash infusion from IBM’s Centennial Grant program.

The study is a project that gives service providers and community developers the

tools they need to assess the supports needed in communities across the city.

The study, which was devised by researchers at the University of Ottawa in 2005, now includes partners from the United Way, the Champlain regional health authority, the city, Ottawa public health, the Coalition of Community Health and Resource Centres and others.

Dr. Elizabeth Kristjansson, with the University of Ottawa, said the idea came about in 2005 as a research project, but had always been intended to be used by service providers. The project received

funding and started gathering information about the city’s 91 neighbourhoods using census and Ottawa public health data.

For example, in the area of Bayshore, data shows a good ethnic and cultural mix but low voting rates, poor access to grocery stores, low availability of recreation and 24 per cent of residents living below the low-income cut off.

The census data on voting and income is updated each census year, but public health information is done slightly more often – every three to five years.

Kristjansson said better than the funding is the help from 75 IBM volunteers who will help to update the website.

Michael Allen, president and CEO of United Way Ottawa, said that all of the agencies looking for funding in the area of early childhood education this year accessed Ottawa Neighbourhood Study data and used it in their applications.

“There are a lot of things anecdotally we know about the areas we serve,” he said. “But having this data has helped us to develop our community development framework enormously,” he said.

The pilot season of special needs soccer wrapped up in Dunrobin on July 27 after eight weeks of sessions.

Greg Patacairk, head coach of the team of 13 autistic children who took to the soccer pitch for the first time in their lives this year, said the idea for the team came about “really as more of a fluke than anything else,” following a conversation with his neighbours, the Taffinders.

“We got to talking about special needs kids,” said Tracy Taffinder, mother of a seven-year-old autistic girl named Laura. “Most of them have neuro-typical siblings who are playing soccer right now.”

Instead of simply watching their brothers or sisters from the sidelines, it would be nice to have the opportunity to participate themselves, she said.

“I thought, ‘Well wait a second,’” Patacairk said, “‘Perhaps there is something very simple we can do to remedy this.’”

The idea of special needs soccer was born.

Their league doesn’t play traditional soccer; there are no designated teams and anyone is allowed to score on either net, but it’s an opportunity for the kids to run around, get some exercise and be involved in a team sport – an opportunity they rarely get, said Taffinder.

The pilot program had a maximum capacity of 13, and an age range from five to 8 years old.

Without much experience with special needs children, Patacairk said he turned to the parents for help.

“I said, ‘Look, I know about soccer.

I don’t know about disabilities. I will need your help.’”

Taffinder and her husband Phil were quick to get involved, helping to establish adaptations to the traditional sport to make room for autistic children’s needs.

One variation requires each child to have a parent shadow them across the field as they play, to ensure safely and comfort for all involved. Siblings of any age are invited to run alongside as well, changing the game into a family sport.

“I honestly believe the parents have gotten just as much out of this as the children,” Taffinder said. “It’s a social thing also.”

Autism often includes many undesirable social behaviours, making it difficult for autistic children to participate in social events.

In a safe environment like this one, those behaviours are more easily managed and tolerated, Taffinder said.

When the idea first came about, it took only three days for the program to fill, with parents responding from as far as Barrhaven.

It became immediately evident that there was a need for this program.

“I found out very quickly that there’s really not much out there for these kids,” Patacairk said. “More of this is heavily required, really needed.”

Eventually, Patacairk would like to expand the program to include a broader age range and various special needs beyond autism.

Discussions about a basketball team in the fall are developing, and Patacairk said that with enough people to help, the program could be expanded enormously.

“What I’d love to see is the youth come forward,” he said. “They all need the community hours for school, and they have the energy required for these kids.”

Many community members have already stepped up, including the West Carleton Soccer Club who donated blue and red jerseys for the team to wear, plus soccer balls, portable nets, cones, and “everything we could possibly require to run a soccer program,” Patacairk said.

“No charges, no questions asked. It was awesome.”

Another local company made trophies for each of the participants, which were presented to them on their final session of Wednesday night soccer games on July 27.

The sad part is that, for now, the league has come to an end.

Patacairk said he heard stories of parents coming home to find their children already dressed in their soccer jerseys, ready and waiting hours in advance.

Laura will be sad to put her jersey away, Taffinder said.

“It was only eight weeks, and most of them are only getting into the swing of things and learning what is expected of them,” she said. “There’s nothing else like this out there right now.”

Offering autistic children an opportunity like this one was unlike anything Patacairk had ever done before.

“All these kids are so excited to be there, they just really want to run,” he said.

Flood insurance rates based on stats: IBC laura.mueller@metroland.com

A Kanata councillor’s plan to convince insurance companies to rethink the information they use to set insurance rates is raising questions about who should be responsible for that process.

Coun. Allan Hubley, who represents Kanata South, plans to meet with the Insurance Bureau of Canada early this fall to give industry players some information about sewer upgrades aimed at preventing flooding in his ward.

Hubley said he needs to go to bat for his residents who have been hit by high insurance rates following a slate of floods, particularly a 2009 flood in Glen Cairn that impacted 1,500 homes.

The city doesn’t have a process of updating the insurance industry on the upgrades it makes to its infrastructure, so Hubley is taking on that role.

Pete Karageorgos, the Insurance Bureau of Canada’s (IBC) manager of consumer and industry relations for Ontario, said he would welcome more municipalities to seek out meetings with industry officials. “That type of thing is really out of the norm, and it’s kind of nice to see that there are municipalities that sort of want to sit down and review the work that

they’ve done on infrastructure issues,�

Karageorgos said.

Actively researching the changing levels of risk – and the factors that contribute to it – is just not something insurance companies do, Karageorgos said. Companies usually judge the risk based on the history and frequency of claims in an area, generally by postal code.

So changes to the city’s infrastructure that would impact or reduce the level of risk is simply not something that would be on the industry’s radar, Karageorgos said. “A proactive approach like Hubley’s is kind of nice to highlight that. Unfortunately, not enough of that is happening,�

Karageorgos said, but at the end of the day insurers will set rates based on data such as claims and losses. “Insurers use empirical data. They use hard numbers. So they will adjust their rates or set their premiums based on what their actual costs have been – what the claims costs have been,� Karageorgos said. “So when the work is done and you see some improvement in cost ratios and losses, that is when change is likely to occur,� he added – the same way insurance rates don’t go up based on the threat of a storm.

Hubley said it makes sense to him that city councillors or officials should take that extra step to put pertinent information into the hands of insurance companies, otherwise they may not find out. “I can appreciate that when we’re talking about insurance coverage across the country and across the province, it would take a huge amount of resources on the insurance companies’ part to be able to access that kind of information on their own,� Hubley said. “So they need help, and in this case it’s going to come from a municipality.� “You hear about the bad stuff,� Karageorgos said. “From an insurance standpoint, you don’t often hear about when the good stuff occurs.�

The insurance industry is also looking to help municipalities, Karageorgos said.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada is developing a tool to help municipalities determine where best to invest their infrastructure dollars. “This is obviously something the industry feels is important,� he said.

The insurance bureau is also hoping to help municipalities by conducting pilot projects like one in Wingham, Ont., where the IBC is studying the impact of providing rain barrels to residents in the hope of reducing stormwater runoff and flooding. Those results would be provided to municipalities.

As for ongoing dialog between the insurance industry and the city, Hubley said: “Hopefully that’s what comes out of this meeting – that the insurance industry and the city find it useful to have these discussions. “Hopefully this is the footprint that other councillors or other municipalities can follow: to meet with the insurance companies, so that they can do their job properly,� he added.

More than 2,000 kilometres later, Kurtis Benedetti says his love for the South March Highlands is stronger than ever.

As the 23-year-old Kanata Lakes resident set out on a grueling bicycle trek from Cape Breton island to Ottawa on July 4, his sights were focused on raising awareness about protecting the South March Highland’s ecosystem, where he spent so much time in as a child.

“I grew up with the South March Highlands being my home,” Benedetti said during a pit stop at the Human Rights Monument near city hall before being joined by a group of supporters for the final leg to the great forest itself.

Benedetti has been involved with raising awareness about the significance of the forest since a campaign to oppose KNL’s Beaver Pond forest development geared up last year.

Since he spent a lot of time mountain biking through the South March Highlands growing up, Benedetti said he felt it was a fitting tribute to use cycling to help raise awareness.

Benedetti said the trip was both a personal accomplishment and an accomplishment for a cause for which he is very passionate.

The old-growth forest must be protected because it is home to at least 20 at-risk species, Benedetti said, and it is considered sacred to the Algonquin people.

On his journey, Benedetti said he encountered many people who could relate to his message.

“I heard a lot of similarities,” he said.

“People told me: ‘The government is not listening.’”

The reaction helped bolster Benedetti’s conviction that the loss of natural habitat is not just a local issue, it is a national and international concern.

That was echoed by Paul Renaud, an organizer with the Coalition to Protect the South March Highlands. He said the federal government’s decision to allow environmental assessments to be fasttracked because of economic stimulus fund investments leaves every habitat in Canada at risk.

PROPOSED REINFORCEMENT OF THE NATURAL GAS DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM CITY OF OTTAWA, ONTARIO The Study Enbridge Gas Distribution Incorporated (Enbridge) has retained Dillon Consulting Limited (Dillon) to undertake an environmental screening and cumulative effects assessment and route selection study for a planned 24-inch (610-mm) diameter natural gas pipeline to reinforce gas supply to the existing Enbridge distribution network in the City of Ottawa, Ontario. Once the study is complete, Enbridge may apply to the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) for approval to construct the new pipeline. If approved, construction may be scheduled for the spring/summer of 2012. The proposed pipeline is required to supply the existing customer base, as well as provide additional supply to forecasted customers.

A Preliminary Preferred Route (PPR) for the proposed pipeline has been identified. As presented on the attached map, the PPR is proposed to originate at the Richmond Gate Station (RGS), located on Fallowfield Road, approximately 2km west of Huntley Road. The PPR will proceed north from the RGS to Flewellyn Road at which point it travels east to Eagleson Road where it then travels north to Hope Side Road. The PPR then proceeds east along Hope Side Road to Richmond Road where it travels north to West Hunt Club Road. The PPR then proceeds east along West Hunt Club Road to the end point located in the vicinity of Greenbank Road. The PPR travels within municipal road allowances.

The Process The study is being conducted in accordance with the OEB’s Environmental Guidelines for the Location, Construction, and Operation of Hydrocarbon Pipelines and Facilities in Ontario, 6th Edition, January 2011. The study will review the need and justification for the pipeline facilities, describe in detail the natural and socio-economic environment, evaluate the potential facilities from a social and environmental perspective, outline safety measures, and describe appropriate measures for impact mitigation and monitoring. Additionally, the proposed works will be streamlined with the federal environmental screening process under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA) and the Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure (MEI) Class Environmental Assessment Process for Realty Activities Other Than Electricity Projects.

“I just want to raise as much money as we can to help people locally,” said Huot.

Last year, she completed the first part of the race in her wheelchair.

“I just wrapped up my wheelchair and pushed my wheelchair the one-kilometre and it was a little bit of a hill down to the finish line,” she said. This year, she’s planning on only using her cane.

After having both her legs amputated, Huot quickly got used to walking on her new legs.

“It was difficult a bit at first. I started by walking with a walker and then I graduated to two (forearm) crutches, and then I ended up graduating to a cane. I just went quickly,” she said. “I just walk around my house for exercise. Sometimes I walk across the street, we have a school so sometimes I walk up the path and down the parking lot.

“I had the determination.”

Claire Heistek, a volunteer with the Alive to Strive Race, first met Huot at a different race where she was working.

“You meet people who have gone through a lot of difficulties in life and I’m impressed by her cheeriness,” said Heistek. “Sometimes we forget, we’re overcome by whatever life throws at us and we feel really overwhelmed. We need to remember that there is something in us that makes us continue. She exudes this zest for life and doggedness.”

The race is created for various levels of fitness for all ages. Proceeds raised will help provide fitness and weight-loss grants to patients living with chronic kidney disease. The increased fitness helps prevent heart disease, the number one cause of death in this population.

Madison Ellas has big plans in life.

But that’s OK, the 19-year-old Bridlewood native picked up some pretty good organizing skills in high school while participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program.

Ellas received the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (gold) during a ceremony held in Toronto on Tuesday, July 26, receiving the honour from the hands of Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award (gold) is given to youth ages 14 to 25 for demonstrating a three-year commitment to personal development, community service and work overseas helping others.

Prince Edward spoke to the recipients during the ceremony.

“It was kind of cool,” said Ellas. “He asked if we went overseas to complete part of the award.”

During her final year at Elmwood High School, a private school in Ottawa, Ellas spent two weeks in a small village in Kenya, helping to build a school.

The award program forces youth to learn how to plan long-term, said Ellas.

“I think it gives them something they constantly work with – a goal,” she said. “So they get used to working with long-term goals.”

In each level of the program – bronze, silver and gold – participants are asked to devote a minimum number of hours every week to picking up a personal skill, volunteering in the community and participating in a physical activity.

In her final three years of high school, Ellas learned how to play the guitar, and regularly played basketball, swam, biked and went snowboarding.

She organized a school camping trip for her high school and embarked on a four-day canoe trip along the Madawaska River.

During her first year in the program, Ellas went dog sledding in Algonquin Park, a trip that involved living outdoors and fetching fresh water from a

nearby lake.

Ellas also worked as a volunteer at the Ottawa hospital Riverside campus, sitting and talking to patients and helping nurses with a variety of tasks, such as folding towels or fetching sandwiches and drinks.

“I gained a lot of perspective on different walks of life,” said Ellas. “Talking to (patients) would brighten their day, so that felt good.”

Ellas isn’t sure what she wants to be when she graduates in three years from the University of Ottawa.

But she knows who she wants to be.

The 19-year-old Bridlewood native said she wants a job where she can help others across the world.

“I want to be working in helping to develop less developed countries,” she said.

It could be as a lawyer, a teacher or as an economist – vocations aimed at helping improve Third World countries.

Ellas, who just completed her first year of study in international economics and development, is already looking at working overseas with Free the Children, an international charity and youth movement that sends out teams of youth to rural communities in Sierra Leone, India, Haiti, Ecuador, China, Sri Lanka and Kenya to build schools, educate children and work on projects to provide health care, clean water and sanitation.

The Crepeault kids, Jacob, Hannah, Sarah, Simon, Lily and Nathaniel, are hosting the family’s fourth annual bottle drive and bake sale for CHEO on Saturday, Aug. 13, when they hope to raise $1,500.

They certainly are creative kids who care.

Ranging in age from five to 15, the six Crepeault children are the masterminds behind Kreative Kids Who Kare, a non-profit that raises money for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario by collecting empty beer, wine and spirit bottles left over from the long weekend.

This year, the Bridlewood family will host its fourth annual bottle drive and bake sale, where they will also be selling hand-made bracelets, lemonade, Starbucks coffee and goodies from the oven for CHEO on Saturday, Aug. 13.

“It’s fun, it’s become a tradition,” said 15-year-old Jacob.

Jacob created a webpage for the annual event to help spread the word. The kids have also posted flyers on mailboxes in the area.

“We’ve given people a month’s notice,” said mom Wendy, who added the family holds the bottle drive around either the August or July long weekend, when people tend to rack up a number of empty bottles.

Four years ago, Wendy and her husband Kevin gave the Crepeault children the task of coming up with a way to get involved with and help out their local community, “so they weren’t sitting in front of the TV all day,” said Wendy.

They came up with the idea for a bottle drive, with the proceeds raised going to CHEO. “We’ve all been there so much we just thought we could do something for them,” said Jacob.

Jacob has been in and out of the hospital since he was three months old, for a variety of illnesses, including viral arthritis.

Nathaniel, 7, broke his leg twice and two of the children were in the hospital for pneumonia. The youngest, Lily, 5, went to CHEO because of eye problems.

“You go in feeling crummy and come out feeling great,” said Wendy, adding the staff and nurses are always so friendly. “It’s just such a wonderful, happy place.”

Last year, the family raised over $1,000.

This year, they’ve set their goal at $1,500.

The bottle drive and bake sale will start at 8 a.m. at the Crepeault home at 20 Redstone Lane in Bridlewood. People can also drop off their empty bottles at the home leading up to Aug. 13.

Jacob added the family is looking for volunteers to help man the bake sale table and pick up bottles.

“You can get high school (volunteer) hours too,” he said.

A local dragonboating team proved to be fierce competitors on an international stage this weekend at the World ICF Dragonboat Club Crew Championships in Toronto.

The Dunrobin Dames earned two silver medals and one bronze during the tournament that ran from July 21-24.

On Thursday July 21, the Dames raced their 20-person boat in the 200 metre race and earned a silver medal right off the bat.

Friday was a day to rest, but Saturday they competed in the 20-person, 500 metre race and again placed

second – coming in only 2-10ths of a second behind the German team that took the gold.

That evening, they won a bronze medal in the two-kilometre race with their trusty 20-person boat.

“I’m so impressed that we did what we did,” Dunrobin Dame member LA Schmidt said. “We’re an over-40 crew, we all have lives, we have families to take care of, we work professionally, and it was really cool to see the ladies come together like this.”

Kanata Klassic raises $5,000 for cancer research The March Tennis Club’s annual Kanata Klassic tournament raised almost $5,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

The tournament, held July 18 to 24, featured some of the best tennis players in the Ottawa area.

The draw was the biggest ever for this tournament with a total of 90 participants.

In the women’s singles event, Petra Januskova defeated Jenny Sheng. Januskova is currently a star player with Pennsylvania State University and is ranked 14th among all Canadian female players.

As a junior player she finished in the top five in both singles and doubles in Canada since 2004.

Jenny Sheng is a rising star and is currently ranked 62nd among girls under 16.

Januskova also won the women’s doubles with her sister Erika Januskova, defeating Sheng and partner Olivia Peisachovitz.

On the men’s side, the final featured a thrilling four-set match with Eric Nguyen winning a hardfought victory over John Wins-Purdy. Nguyen plays for Bradley University in the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

In the men’s doubles, Nguyen was also victorious with partner Nicolas Vincent. They defeated Francisco Alvarez and Wins-Purdy.

Attack win qualifier OTTAWA VALLEY ATTACK The Ottawa Valley Attack won gold at a provincial qualifier girls fastball tournament held in Port Perry, Ont. on July 23-24.

With the win, the Attack advance to the Ontario championship in St. Catharines, Ont. on Aug. 12-14.

The Attack won their first four games in convincing fashion, allowing only six runs against the opposing teams, winning 6-0, 12-2, 20-2 and 10-4.

In their first game against Peterborough, pitcher Jean Cardona, threw a one-hitter, striking out 11.

Kilimanjaro Grannies host fundraising gala at the NCC for AIDS victims KRISTY WALLACE kristy.wallace@metroland.com

When GisĂŠle Lalonde Mansfield heard The Lion King was coming to town at the National Arts Centre, she jumped at the chance to continue her fundraising efforts for African grandmothers forced by circumstance to become sole caregivers of their grandchildren. “What a perfect match,â€? said Lalonde Mansfield – who was also a grandmother who founded the Kilimanjaro Grannies.

The group decided to take the opportunity to host a fundraising gala on July 14 – the same day the Tony Award-winning musical was to open at the NAC. The gala featured a three-course African themed meal and interaction with some of the cast members.

Lalonde Mansfield climbed Mount Kilimanjaro along with six other grannies in the group to raise money and awareness in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to

Grandmothers Campaign.

The campaign supports grandmothers in Africa who are left to raise their grandchildren who are left orphaned due to the scourge of HIV/AIDS. “I saw what was going on in Africa and what they were going through,� said Lalonde Mansfield. “It’s not fair that I’m enjoying grandmotherhood and they don’t get a chance to enjoy it. They’re in their golden years, and they should be sitting back and relaxing and enjoying their grandchildren.�

Lalonde Mansfield added that the grandmothers also have the added stress of losing their children. “I can’t imagine losing my child,� she said. “I put myself in their shoes.�

So far, the group has raised $78,000 for the foundation’s campaign, but wanted to raise $25,000 more as part of The Lion King’s opening.

In addition to the gala, the grannies also unveiled The Tree of Life, which was created by

students at All Saints Catholic High School. People are welcome to purchase leaves for $5, and Lalonde Mansfield hopes to raise at least $2,500 extra from that initiative.

Lalonde Mansfield also hopes that students creating the tree will also start up a bigger youth to youth movement between young people in Canada and in Africa. “They need to know that Canadian youth are on their side,� she said. “I can’t see why they can’t all get together and create a campaign for themselves and get some momentum going like the grandmothers.�

Barbara Carriere, another granny who climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, said the money raised will go helping grannies support themselves and their grandchildren by letting them go to school, buy uniforms and shoes. “We felt it was for a wonderful cause, and it made it worth our whole struggle up that mountain,� Carriere said.

While the grandmothers have mixed feelings about climbing the mountain again, Carriere said she might. “It would be wonderful to go

• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with customers to co-ordinate all service work and training. Manage relationships with various inspectors from nuclear, medical devices and healthcare regulatory agencies.

• Field experience in customer service. International field experience in customer service would be an asset.

• Experience in X-Ray equipment and repair would by highly desirable.

• May be required to spend approximately 160-180 days out of the country working time at customer sites, possible 2 – 3 weeks at a time. In addition, travel on short notice as well as travel on some weekends and holidays will be required.

• Must be able to work under tight timelines.

• Multilingual skills would also be desirable

Nepean-Kanata Rotary Club presents 50K challenge New president Peter McKennirey talks about club, 42-year history JENNIFER MCINTOSH jennifer.mcintosh@metroland.com

The Nepean-Kanata Rotary is presenting the community with a 50K challenge.

The club, which will celebrate its 42nd anniversary this year, found a surplus in their funds, thanks in part to the inaugural Rock the Boat fundraiser held at the Nepean Sailing Club in March.

“We are a service club, so we aren’t really supposed to have extra money laying around,” Peter McKennirey, the new Nepean-Kanata Rotary Club president said.

McKennirey said the club decided the best plan was to go out to the Rotarians and the community to see what kind of projects people wanted to see.

“We would look at something that is in keeping with the Rotary principles,” he said.

The successful project will both benefit people and promote the core values of the club and Rotary. They are casting a

broad net to tell people about this challenge and encouraging residents to suggest possible initiatives.

The guiding principles are truth, fairness, fostering goodwill and better friendships and making sure projects are beneficial to all concerned.

McKennirey took over the position of Rotary president from Miriam Fraser and said he has been part of Rotary for six years, ever since his wife Lil became in involved in a program for students in Ghana.

“Lil is very interested in music and became involved with taking some instruments over there,” McKennirey said.

“While she was there she noticed that students were really lacking in school supplies so she came back and got some donations and had some trouble with shipping so she approached the Rotary and they stepped in to help.”

McKennirey has been to Ghana and South Africa to help with Rotarian projects and has

been involved in the club’s bursary program locally.

During a chat about the club, he brought up the Comfort Stars, a program run by Alice Otupiri who runs a girls club in Accra, Ghana, with the support of the Nepean-Kanata club.

“We do a lot of things locally and internationally,” McKennirey said, adding that no matter where he has gone, the principles of Rotary stay the same.

But there are some challenges.

There are only 24 members of the Nepean-Kanata club and the median age is quite high. McKennirey said the club needs new blood and more volunteers.

He said he likes that the meetings are held at night, something he considered when he and his wife choose the Nepean-Kanata club over the noontime club in Ottawa west – where he lives.

“Rotary needs to look at making those kinds of concessions for younger people,” he said, adding that allowing members to miss meetings due to work commitments and make up on special projects is a way to maintain some flexibility.

A local company that focuses on the aging brain is hosting a presentation on how to help Alzheimer’s and dementia patients at the Chartwell Kanata Retirement Residence on Thursday, Aug. 11.

Fit Minds is hosting one-hour event, which will focus on how cognitive interaction can help those suffering from forms of dementia, said Paul de Grandpré, chief operating officer of Fit Minds.

“Cognitive interaction is one of the things that really helps,” he said. “This is very straightforward and non-evasive. There is no chance for negative side effects from it.”

The event is open to everyone, he said, including family and professional caregivers for those with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

He said there will be examples of tools and activities people can use to help improve brain function.

Some include music, critical thinking, visual spatial orientation and memory. One example is Picasso art cards.

“They’re both beautiful and interesting and serve as a discussion point, memory game or patterning,” said de Grandpré, adding items around the house can be used in such activities.

“The approach of having out of the box, easy to use activities that stimulate the areas of cognition are the key areas we’re keen on communicating to people,” he said.

“The main goal here is just to get the message out that this is something that people can do.”

The free presentation will take place at Chartwells Kanata Retirement Residence on Aug. 11, at 7 p.m.

The National Capital Commission has began a new green partnership with charitable housing group Habitat for Humanity to salvage building materials from the NCC’s doomed residential properties in support of Ottawa’s low-income families.

The NCC was created in the late 1950s as a manager of federal lands and buildings in the National Capital Region. It is in the process of demolishing 14 homes across Ottawa and Gatineau that were purchased in the 1960s to reserve the land for future greenbelt rehabilitation, which are now too run down to maintain.

The lands will be re-established as part of the greenbelt, while the houses’ many doors, windows, structural beams and even the kitchen sink will be donated to Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore facility selling used building materials to raise money for housing projects across the city.

“The money that’s raised in the store helps supports all of our operating costs and helps

us with the purchase of land.

So we were so excited about an opportunity for a partnership,” said Donna Hicks, CEO of the National Capital Region branch of Habitat for Humanity. “There is so much usable material in a house. Rather than see the whole house go to landfill – which is very expensive to cart it away, isn’t very good for our environment and certainly isn’t ensuring a future for our children if our landfills are all full – we salvage material, we sell it, we house more low-income families.”

The NCC’s environmental strategy calls on the federal body to recycle and reuse as much as possible from their demolished buildings. According to the NCC’s chief of asset management and real estate Mary Ann Waterson, the organization already has a landfill diversion rate of 94 per cent. This partnership will help bring those numbers even higher, she said.

“There have been a couple of years I’ve been looking at ways to reuse, recycle and reduce waste on our sites. With this new partnership we’ll be able to even further increase that. So for us at the NCC that’s very important,” Waterson told

a small crowd gathered on July 19 in front of the summer’s first house up for demolition, located at 2830 Lester Rd. in Ottawa South.

Out of the 14 homes being demolished by the NCC this summer, Habitat has already looked at five and found that three have salvageable items. The remaining nine homes will be inspected between now and September for reusable goods.

Waterson said some houses don’t yield many reusable items because of their age or upkeep, and the level of NCC investment.

The house on Lester Road, for example, features upgraded and relatively new windows that can be used again. Other properties may have original windows that are no longer up to code or in good enough shape to reuse.

As Habitat for Humanity volunteers gutted the inside of the early 1950s house, carrying out kitchen cupboards and other reusable items, Hicks said this house will yield a number of saleable treasures.

“Definitely the kitchen and bathrooms, we’ll take some of the wood, we’ll try and rescue the hardwood floors,” she said, noting that people love to buy old hardwood. She added that

The items are sold through the ReStore business because Habitat tries to make their housing projects as new as possible for the families moving in. The money made at the used materials store helps cover some of the cost of buying new materials.

It costs $130,000 in cash and $75,000 in materials and services to build a new home for a lowincome family, and about $35,000

to renovate an existing building – although most of the trades work and some materials are donated. Purchasing a house for renovation can sometimes be more costly than building new, especially if it’s not donated or can’t be bought cheaply.

Habitat for Humanity is currently working on three projects in the area. The most pressing is for a family with two disabled children, who need a renovated bungalow close to CHEO by September. Habitat is fielding housing donation prospects, and

“We don’t get many people in their 50s and 60s because most think they don’t require that,” she said.

The program helps seniors to keep up to date with new traffic laws and technologies.

“Many of the seniors we get never attended any driving class. Most of them learned how to drive by driving trucks in the fields,” said Freeman.

On average, the program trains around 75 seniors a year.

Freeman said it is important to review your driving even if you haven’t been involved in a collision for 40 years.

With aging, changes occur in hearing, vision, flexibility and reaction time.

Founded in 1957, the Senior Citizens Council of Ottawa provides seniors with the means to enhance their well-being and remain self sufficient.

Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind is looking for foster homes for future Guide dogs.

Future Guide Dogs need homes CANADIAN GUIDE DOGS FOR THE BLIND Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind is pleased to announce the birth of our latest litters of puppies.

Within several weeks, these puppies will require foster homes to learn what it takes to become a “good dog” before entering formal training to become guide dogs or assistance dogs to help someone in need.

Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind is seeking foster families for our latest arrivals.

You must be home most of the day or obtain permission to take the dog to work with you. You require access to a vehicle for veterinary appointments and training sessions.

All food and veterinary expenses are provided.

This is a 12-18 month commitment, raising and training the dog in your home, with the expectation for daily long walks in all conditions.

When the dog is ready to enter into formal training at the National Training Centre of Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind in Manotick, in the south part of Ottawa, you must be prepared to give up the dog, so that it may continue its journey to aid as a guide dog or assistance dog.

Information sessions for this program will be held on Aug. 12, Aug. 26, and Sept.

An Ottawa volunteer association will be offering a defensive driving course for seniors to help older drivers refresh their driving skills to better cope with today’s traffic conditions.

“We plan to have these courses sometime in September, October and November,” said Kay Freeman, program director at the Senior Citizens Council of Ottawa, talking about the 55 Alive Driving Safety Course. “The refresher course helps drivers age 55 or older improve their driving skills and prevent traffic accidents.”

Though a location for the course has yet to be determined, Freeman said an announcement will be made in the near future in the council’s newsletter about registration.

The course will address the physical changes among older drivers that can affect ability and behavior, and suggest ways to adjust their driving habits.

“We think it is a good program because a lot of people come back and take it again,” said Freeman.

Some drivers who sign up for the course will even make the decision they shouldn’t be driving anymore.

“That is very important when people acknowledge they are not suitable to drive,” she said.

Freeman said majority of course participants they get are those turning 80.

The province of Ontario requires drivers to renew their licence every two years once they reach 80, taking a vision test,
