A local soccer club is hoping the city reins in its decision to host the Capital Hoedown in Kanata. The West Ottawa Soccer Club (WOSC) has asked the city to consider other venues for the country music festival instead of hosting the event at Walter Baker Park. “These are athletic fields; they are not made for this type of event,” said Brian Mason, president of the soccer club. “If it rains, can you imagine the damage? It would ruin it. It’ll be years before it can be used in the form of athletics.” Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley met with the west Ottawa and Ottawa and Nepean soccer clubs on Saturday, Dec. 3, to discuss some of the concerns over the use of the fields during the Hoedown. “They were making decisions thinking the whole park was being used for the event,” said Hubley, adding the promoters have rented the entire facility for the event but will not be using all the facilities. He said the event will be set up near the baseball and soccer fields located off of Maple Grove Road. The stage will be set up in the corner of the park closest to the Bell Sensplex. “That’s where the bulk of the people will stand,” said Hubley. “We recognize that there’s a higher risk for damage on that field than the other fields.”
