The father of a gay Glen Cairn teenager who took his own life is calling for schools to stamp out bullying. Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley spoke to the Kourier-Standard on Monday, Oct. 24, about his 15-year-old son Jamie’s struggles with bullying in schools, which led to a deep depression he couldn’t overcome. “We have to take back the hallways and the washrooms,” said Hubley. Hubley remembers his last conversation with Jamie when he dropped his son off at A.Y. Jackson Secondary School on Friday morning, Oct. 14. Hubley told Jamie he knew the boy was having a tough time at school. “I said, ‘Jamie … I’m a phone call away. If you’re having a hard time at school just call me. I’ll come get you. It’s no big deal, we’re there for you,’” said Hubley. “I told him I loved him,” Hubley said. “I’m thankful that I told him.” BULLYING

Jamie was also a top-10 provincial figure skating competitor. He preferred the sport to hockey because he thought hockey was too rough, said Hubley, which made him a target. “That’s what bullies look for, the stray sheep from the flock,” said Hubley. “It was relentless what they did to him.” Jamie was forced to switch schools in Grade 7, after a group of four or five students

forced flashlight batteries down Jamie’s throat while they were on a school bus. “We had to rush him to CHEO,” said Hubley, who then met with school officials to deal with the bullying issue. Holy Trinity and the Ottawa Catholic School Board were slow to act or even acknowledge the bullying incident took place, said Hubley. HUBLEY, see 4
