skis
Buying a pair of skis doesn’t need to be a daunting experience. Whether a first or replacement pair, let us help guide you through the process...
W
hen buying a pair of skis, there are a few simple pieces of information that will help you to find your perfect match. With the introduction of carving skis and new technology, ski length is based more on the user’s weight than the tradition of using your height. Combine this with your ski level and your aspirations and this will help narrow your choice very quickly.
CHOOSING SKIS...
Select your current ski level from the list below: 1
Never skied before
2
You can stop with a snowplough
3
Snowplough turns, doing the odd blue
4
Starting to Parallel turn, onto blues
5
Venturing onto reds, step turns
6
Getting confident on red, the odd black
7
Comfortable skiing most black runs
8
Comfortable on ice, going off-piste
9
Aggressive off-piste skiing, carving on piste

Professional Instructor
Here at Edge & Wax we then break this down into 5 groups; NOVICE (1-4), INTERMEDIATE (4-6), ADVANCED (6-8), EXPERT (8-10) and PROFESSIONAL (10). Our ski ranges are labelled in this way to assist you. Now you know your ski level, you need to decide where you will mainly use the skis: Groomed piste runs All snow conditions (from ice to slush) All mountain skiing (piste & off-piste) Off-piste skiing (powder) Ski touring This should now give you a focussed list of skis to look at as potential candidates.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR SKIS... Now you have a shiny new set of skis, we want to help make sure they last you as long as possible. Follow these handy tips for skis that will last you for many years and become your obedient friends:
Feed Your Skis Wax is critical to getting the best performance from your skis. Wax also protects the bases from wear and tear on the mountain. Different waxes are available, but you need to wax your skis at least at the end of a week’s skiing. Make sure wherever you take them uses a waxing iron to wax them like we do here as it is longer lasting and gives better performance than a roll on application. We have one of the most advanced dedicated workshops in the industry here at Edge & Wax, managed by Boot Camp Technician Training (www.bctt.co.uk) and also offer remote collection and return servicing. Here are some of the most common services we offer: Wax Skis or Snowboard (with a waxing iron)

*If you already have skis and are concerned about your bindings working correctly, we have one of the few active binding test machines in the UK, and can offer full testing with a detailed report for a fee of £20.00. This will test your bindings to the manufacturers standards to ensure correct and safe function.
STORING SKIS Storing skis correctly will ensure prolonged life. We recommend that you store them somewhere dry and at normal room temperature. Many skis are wood core based and exposure to damp or excessive heat, such as in a loft, can lead to problems, so we recommend putting them on display in the living room, or on a dedicated bracket in the garage or spare room. Edge & Wax sell a range of ski and snowboard brackets to keep things safe and secure. If you are storing skis or boards for a while, get your local ski tech to apply a liberal coat of wax to the base to put them into “Summer Storage” for the off-season.

ski poles
A
s useful as ski poles are in ski queues and picking up dropped gloves, the main reason for ski poles is to help maintain rhythm and stability through turns on the mountain. A solid ‘pole plant’ is a fundamental element to creating beautiful arcs of varying shapes down the mountain. Correct pole use can also help in accelerating out of turns.
Pole materials – Why are there options? An aluminium ski pole can be relatively low cost, so if you lose poles this may be a sound purchase! Higher quality alloy ski poles will have taper wall tubing, putting material where it is needed for strength and removing it where weight can be saved. Carbon Fibre can be used to create very technical ski poles, again focussing on strength where it is needed and lighter weight towards the tips, to encourage easier swinging of the poles between each pole plant. Carbon Fibre can also be optimised for flex so that the pole flexes and springs back giving you an extra bit of power when planting through your turns.

Which basket do I need? A small solid basket is ideal for piste conditions, as it will mainly be used on firmer or prepared snow and won’t sink in when pushed into the surface. For powder skiing though these would simply sink, so a much larger basket is used with open venting to give the basket a greater surface area to stop it sinking into the snow. With the venting, powder passes through as the pole is raised from the snow, avoiding drag. There are also poles that have a hybrid of the two basket types for versatility.
Straps and Grips Straps allow you to keep hold of the pole in the event of a fall, but some skiers and in particular off piste skiers won’t use straps to avoid wrist injuries if a tree or rock is clipped. A modern variant is Leki’s quick release system, where the grip integrates with a special glove or strap attached to the glove, and releases in the event of a heavy fall.
Sizing your poles As a guide to correct pole length, you should turn the pole upside down and grab the pole right below the basket. If your arm is at a right angle to the ground, then this should be the right size for you. Most poles can be cut down in length. We have also produced a table as a rough guide.

ski boots
Ski boots are the single most important piece of kit you can invest in for skiing... IMPORTANCE OF GOOD FIT
H
aving seen hundreds of feet per season we can confirm no one foot is the same. We feel the key to a good fit for ski boots, is a focussed fitting session, like the ones we offer here at Edge & Wax. Video of our boot fitting process can be seen on our website and comprises of the following steps: Interview – No right and wrong answers here, we just ask some questions to build up a picture of what you are looking for and what your feet have been up to. Measuring & Analysis – We take key measurements also analyse your feet assessing, your arches/instep and looking at how your foot behaves in and out of a ski boot Shell Checks – We take a selection of boots based on the above information, take out the liners and place your naked foot inside to see how much room is around the foot in all the key places. Trying Boots – Then it is over to you. We try a focussed short list of boots and get feedback from you and your feet until we have a boot which is pretty close to what we are looking to achieve. Our mantra is “fit then flex” as too much attention is often paid to flex which can be adjusted in most cases. The Fitting – We then heat mould the boot liner so it conforms to your foot profile. We can also stretch or adjust hot spots on the boot, and create custom foot beds. If you are looking for a well fitted boot that will last for years, footbeds are essential; they keep you in the optimum position for skiing all day and reduce fatigue too, making your precious time on the mountain more comfortable and allowing you to develop your technique. Once you are happy, the boots are yours and we discuss aftercare, reminding you that our boot fitting comes with a comfort fit guarantee. We also show you the correct buckling technique, which ensures good ankle hold and all day comfort avoiding the need to fiddle (with your buckles).
AFTER CARE Looking after your boots correctly ensures many years of service and the same great fit. Boots should always be stored with the buckles lightly done up and with the liners in the boot to maintain their shape. For drying you should invest in a boot dryer, or place them in a nice airy room upon your return and let them naturally dry out. Never store your boots anywhere too warm, such as a loft. Heat is how we moulded the boots to your foot shape and we have had customers in with mice damage thanks to loft storage. Keep them in the bottom of the cupboard safely tucked away. Keep the soles clean and if the rubber replaceable sections look worn, do get them checked and replaced. To avoid wearing these on long walks to the lift, invest in some Cat Tracks that slip on and stop you slipping around on icy streets too.

socks
YOUR SKI SOCK MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE TO SKI BOOT COMFORT AND WARMTH...
O
ver the years, ski sock technology has evolved to such an extent it can be bewildering when buying a new pair of socks. One certainty is that investing in at least one decent pair of technical ski socks is a wise decision. Modern technical ski socks are designed specifically to perform inside a ski or snowboard boot under the conditions you will experience. They are also designed to compliment a ski boot fitter’s work rather than being too bulky. Modern socks have padding in the right places, and then thinner material where it is not required to help transport moisture from the foot and aid a closer fit. Moisture is the key thing to consider when selecting a ski sock. You can sweat up to half a pint of water in a day’s skiing, and that sweat can collect in fabric. When resting on a chair, in comes the wind chill to cool the moisture in your socks, chilling your feet. Therefore a technical sock will do a better job of keeping your feet dry (and warmer) than a thick traditional sock. Modern ski socks are harder wearing than tube socks so you only need to buy a couple of pairs to treat your feet to the comfort they deserve. In-resort, thanks to high wicking materials, they can be hand washed in the evening and will dry overnight.

FALKE SK4 SKI SOCK Ref: 16498(MENS) 16478(WMNS)

A new sock in the Wigwam ski sock line, as always the highest quality merino wool is used and constructed to maximise the wicking properties of the yarn. Smart Silver™ is then incorporated to provide anti-bacterial odour free properties for fresher feet. This sock is a low volume style for precise fit.

This is an ideal sock for wearing with rental boots.
All the properties of the Falke ski sock line have been put into this children’s sized sock, so you still get an anatomical left and right fit (making them fun to put on!) and still have warm and unfussy feet thanks to high wicking materials keeping moisture away from the foot.

CLOTHING
SELECTING CORRECT CLOTHING FOR MOUNTAIN CONDITIONS WILL KEEP YOU SAFE AND WARM...
W
earing the right garments for the conditions you are skiing in not only keeps you protected from the elements, but is essential to keep you safe on the mountain. Conditions can change at very short notice and you need to be able to adapt to the weather quickly. This is why layering has become accepted as the best way to dress for the mountain. By having several thinner layers of clothing you can achieve two things, firstly the convenience of being able to increase or decrease layers to adapt to the conditions and secondly to encourage breathability. By having thinner breathable layers, as you work hard, sweat will not build up and start to chill you, but instead is carried away from the skin via your base layer and mid layer, to the outer jacket shell. Layering is also convenient, as your base layer will do most of the work, meaning you can wear your mid layers and jacket for longer without fear of smelling out the après ski bar! So take a couple of base layers with you when skiing. Legs also benefit from layering, we always encourage wearing leggings underneath trousers for additional protection. We also offer leggings in a ¾ length for optimum fit with ski socks. For sizing advice we provide sizing charts on our website or contact us for additional guidance.

baselayers
BASE LAYERS ARE THE FOUNDATION TO A COMFORTABLE DAY ON THE MOUNTAIN...
he development of quality base layers for mountain use has been one of the biggest influences on all-day mountain comfort. In recent years yarns have evolved very quickly to offer fabrics that transport sweat away from the ski rather than absorb it, which is key to ensuring mountain winds don’t chill you. The minimum you should wear is one next-tothe-skin base layer. On colder days, you can then combine this with a mid-layer, to maintain the breathability whilst adding an additional layer of warmth. The final layer – your jacket – then battles the elements keeping wind and snow out. We carry two key base layer lines. Falke use the latest technical yarns, laid into the garment in key places where sweat builds up, to transport it away. On some models, the garment is made in such a way that key muscle groups are supported by the garment to enhance comfort and help with fatigue. Icebreaker utilises the natural properties of merino wool to offer protection without odour and itching. In cold weather it is the world’s best natural insulator, and when warmer offers high wicking properties to keep skin dry. Whatever you choose, a base layer will give you the foundation to a comfortable day on the mountain, tackling moisture, heat and cold silently while you get on with enjoying your day on the slopes. Sizing charts are available on our website for all the garments where a wider selection is also available.

The Falke Athletic Base Layer Top offers a highly technical garment with a close fit to ensure that moisture is transported away quickly from the skin to keep your body at the correct temperature whether it is hot or cold. gloves
SPEND AS MUCH AS YOU CAN ON GLOVES AND THEY WILL SERVE YOU FOR YEARS… here is no substitute for a good quality glove on the mountain. Cold hands on the slopes and the lifts can be incredibly painful and in extreme cold dangerous, so make sure you invest in a well fitting pair of gloves. We sell a few brands of gloves to suit different budgets. Hestra have a very strong reputation amongst season workers and regular skiers due to their durability and great fit. Leather Hestra models include a small sachet of leather treatment, and whatever brand of gloves you decide on, it is important to ‘feed’ any leather areas regularly so that they maintain their water resistant properties and soft feel. To size yourself up for gloves, you should measure around the hand excluding your thumb. This measurement in inches is your glove size. Hestra also offer additional information on finger length which can further enhance the fit. This information is available when you select a glove on our website. You can also choose between gloves, mittens and the exciting new 3-finger format. This is a personal preference, although mittens allow you to insert glove warmers more easily.
LINERS... (HANDS NEED LAYERS TOO) When buying gloves it is important to also consider buying a pair of glove liners. These are relatively inexpensive, and like layering your clothing, helps keep hands dry by wicking away sweat and trapping dry air to keep your hands warm. Being thin they are easily stowed away in your jacket pocket when it warms up. When sizing, do not adjust glove or lining size, just order your normal size. We offer several types of glove liner, here are our best sellers:
HESTRA SILK GLOVE LINER
HESTRA POLARTEC POWER DRY LINER
HESTRA POLARTEC WAFFLED LINER
The Hestra Silk glove liner is our thinnest glove liner so is ideal for closer fitting compact gloves, and for those who appreciate the properties of silk to provide and additional layer of insulation.
The Hestra Polartec Powedry glove liner uses a technical light weight fabric to transport moisture quickly away from the fingers, to keep them dry and therefore warm. Perfect for all ski conditions including back country touring. Medium to light volume.
The genius behind the Hestra Polartec Waffled liner is the squares throughout the fabric. These increase the surface area, aiding in transporting moisture away and then trapping dry warm air. These are slightly higher in volume.

earing a helmet is still a personal choice in most resorts, but the last 2 seasons have seen a rapid rise in helmet wearing throughout the world. We think wearing a helmet is the only way to go out on the mountain. You have the obvious safety benefits of protecting yourself; you just never know what is round the corner, or what is coming up from behind you. Modern helmets also protect you against the cold on chillier days, but have enough ventilation or adjustment to allow airflow through so even spring skiing is comfortable with a helmet on. Some models allow you to fit audio systems, which allow you to listen to music on the lift to the next descent, but still allow you to hear what is going on around you. Remember that you should change your helmet after a big fall, to ensure the same level of protection next time you have an incident.

eyewear WEARING QUALITY EYEWEAR ON THE MOUNTAIN IS ESSENTIAL TO PROTECT YOUR VISION...
U
ltra violet rays attack the eyes just like they do the skin, so it is important that at altitude where the UV rays are much stronger your eyes are protected. With bright conditions it is easy to get snow blind, or in a whiteout situation it can be difficult to find your way, neither of which is safe. For bright conditions a darker lens often mirrored will block harmful light and give a good clarity of vision. MAINTAINING YOUR SKIS OR BOARD IS ESSENTIAL IN ENSURING GOOD PERFORMANCE AND FOR IMPROVED LONGEVITY...
H
ere at Edge & Wax we offer a comprehensive on site workshop facility with our sister business Boot Camp, who also offer training courses in ski and snowboard maintenance. Looking after your own kit can be highly rewarding, and Boot Camp have put together this basic DIY guide to help you spot potential issues and perform maintenance on your equipment. Comprehensive guides can also be found on our website.
INSPECT YOUR BASES... You should keep an eye on your bases. If they are white or fuzzy in places this is a sign that they need waxing (see below). Small gouges and scratches can be temporarily filled with a repair stick. Simply light with a lighter (not a match) and drip the material into the gouge to prevent further damage. Smooth off with sandpaper or a metal scraper. More permanent repairs can be made with a repair gun. Brake retainers for skis are a must, as they keep the brakes out of the way so you can focus on repairing and waxing.
KEEP YOUR EDGES SHARP AND CONSISTENT... A consistent and sharp edge will perform better and last longer too. Use a side edge tool to ‘set’ your edges at the correct angle. This is normally 1-3 degrees (on tools this may be 89-87 on the setting dial) depending on the manufacturer. Once sharp, you should detune the tip and tail with a gummi stone, and do a single pass with the stone down the length of the edge to remove any burr from filing. A diamond file is an excellent way of finishing your edges and can be used on the mountain to sharpen edges.
38
WAX REGULARLY AND CORRECTLY FOR A GREAT GLIDE... Too many ski and board owners do not wax their equipment regularly enough. Waxing ‘feeds’ the bases and ensures a good glide. To wax, firstly take some wax remover and use a fibre fleece cloth to remove old wax. Then set a dedicated waxing iron at the temperature indicated on your ski wax. Apply wax evenly across the base, you should have a steady rhythm and melt the wax thoroughly. This should not take more than a couple of minutes to do. Allow to cool for at least 15 minutes. Then scrape off the excess wax with a Perspex scraper, including the edges with the nick in the corner of the scraper. Finish by brushing from tip to tail in straight lines, with a nylon brush. This polishes the bases and creates extra structure so your base glides smoothly.
TIPS FOR LOOKING AFTER SKIS & BOARDS... The above is a very brief guide and a comprehensive guide can be downloaded from our website. One product we do recommend is Zardoz NotWax which is a Teflon product. Applied after waxing it gives a much improved glide, and is simply stunning on soft slushy snow such as spring conditions. Also it is useful is at the end of a trip, as you can run Zardoz NotWax down your edges before packing your gear away and it prevents any rusting. When storing your skis or board for long periods, we suggest waxing them and then NOT scraping, leaving a protective layer of wax across your bases and edges which you can scrape off before your next trip.
GIVE IT A TRY WITH OUR STARTER KIT!.. We offer a DIY Edge & Wax Starter Kit to allow you to undertake basic maintenance and waxing in the comfort of your own home or hotel room. The items highlighted in bold in the above guide are included in our starter kit, which separately is valued at over £125.00. The only items you need to add for your own workshop set up are vices and any repair materials, which can be found over the page. Combined with our online guides, this kit is a great introduction to ski/board tuning and a money saver too!

Soft cases can come in single or double versions, and can be fixed or adjustable length. Some will have padding included although these are becoming rarer as they add weight, and ski clothing inside a soft case makes for excellent padding and makes smarter use of your luggage allowance.

Hard cases offer the most secure carriage of skis and boards in various sizes are available, and some airlines now state hard cases as being mandatory to take equipment on their flights. They are great for storing your gear after a holiday and can be tied to roof bars in resort whilst remaining protected. For back packs, there are daypacks that carry your essentials, through to backcountry packs that almost carry the kitchen sink. One consideration is having a hydration system, as this will encourage you to keep hydrated on the mountain, and saves a small fortune in restaurant stops too!
