EVS HEROES

Here WE are!

We are the new volunteers of K.A.NE Social Youth Development and Culti Multi Social Cooperative! This February, we came to work for the good of the organizations and to make this world a better place.

We are independent individuals, with different backgrounds and cultural peculiarities, but we are also an effective TEAM united by a common goal. Each of us has a different kind of activity, which combines creativity and diligence.

Volunteering brings us great pleasure, because with the help of this we can improve our knowledge and skills, help the local society and get to know the beautiful Greek culture and its people.

We will spend a different amount of time here, but we hope that we will be able to enjoy this time in the same way. We invite you to get to know us better and follow the results of our work.

Sia, how is KALAMATA?

Kalamata received me with wonderful weather and warm sun, which I miss so much in Poland. I was lucky enough to come to Kalamata during the national Greek celebration of Carnival. The city was decoratedwithcolorfulribbons and all sorts of themed sculptures. The celebration of the Carnival went well, and fullyshowedthecordialityand creativity of the Greeks, their abilitytorelaxandhavefun,as wellasrespectfortraditions.

The locals are extremely friendly and positive, which is not surprising, because smiles rarely leave the faces of the Greeks. It is interesting to watch how the locals spend theirfreetime:inthemorningcoffee in their favorite cafe, in theevening-dinnerinthecity with their favorite company, traditions that the locals have beenfollowingforgenerations.

Lonie about KALAMATA

IThe first impression I had about Kalamata remains and didn’t change. On one hand, Kalamata gives me a feeling of nostalgia. It brings me back to my childhood memories of summer vacation when my family and I were going somewhere near the sea or the mountain.

Enjoy the nice weather, the fresh market with local products, the sunset while walking down the streets with all the nice shops, bars, and restaurants on the side, and the sound of the vibrant life of the city with all its welcoming inhabitants.

On the other hand, Kalamata makes me excited: excited to discover this new place, discover another culture, visit, and enjoy new food.

My first impressions of Kalamata make my stay and my experience here very promising.

CARNIVAL

CARNIVAL in KALAMATA

Every year in Kalamata, a tradition takes place: the carnival. Lasting 3 weeks and starting mid-February, this is a very festive moment in the year, a time for everyone to gatherandenjoybeingtogether. Everyone prepares for assisting one of the most awaited moments of this celebration, the parade. Happening in the central square of the city, the streets becomethestagefordisguised people participating, parents and children, teenagers, and a group of friends, everybody is welcome to take part in the party, making it a tradition that is passed on from generation to generation.

The music flow to the rhythm of the apparitions of all the different costumes; there are many themes, some come from pop culture, with people dressed as characters from The Addams Family, or The Lion King, but also more general themes, with a group of people dressed asVikingsorevenpom-pomgirls. Running through the city, the parade gives the feeling that Kalamata is not the place of the carnival, but that Kalamata isthecarnival.

18

CARNIVAL in France. How it looks like? CARNIVAL

The carnival in my city is different from that of Kalamata there is the parade but it is much more focused on tanks that are 3 to 4 times larger, one of the differences between carnival in France and that in Greece is the duration in France only one day while carnival here lasts 3 days. People are rather festive in France after I only did it in my city since I was small and people are rather involved, disguised and everything is good to drink. But whether it is the carnival in France andtheoneinGreecearequitesimilar.Inmy city, we have some culinary specialties like taloa, which is a belly sandwich, but let’s move on. In my city, we celebrate Basque traditions because Bayonne is part of the Basque country. The French Basque Country or Northern Basque Country is part of the Basque Country located on French territory.
