FOOTBALL CLUB
WALTON CASUALS
Walton Casuals Football Club was formed in July 1948, owing its early origins to members of the Armed Forces who formed a Sunday side, having played only friendly fixtures throughout the 1946-47 season. The club commenced its inaugural season in Division 1 of the Surrey Intermediate (Central) League, playing at Elm Grove Recreation Ground. Soon gaining promotion to the Premier Division during the 1952-53 season, Walton Casuals later finished as runners-up on three occasions: 1954-55, 1956-57 and 1964-65. With the disbandment of the Surrey Intermediate (Central) League in 1965, the club opted to move to the league’s Western Section for three seasons.
However, in 1969 Casuals joined the new Surrey Senior League, during which they moved into their recent home at Franklyn Road. Just two years later the Stags become founder members of the Suburban League, and after one season at Walton & Hersham’s Stompond Lane, moved into Liberty Lane at Addlestone for eight seasons. Nonetheless, they soon returned to Franklyn Road – which had remained host to the reserve squad – while playing in the Surrey Combination League Walton Casuals scooped their first major honour during the 1982-83 season, as manager Kim Harris guided the club to become champions of the Southern section of the Suburban League, while also setting a league record of an impressive 23 games unbeaten. Casuals could only manage a second place finish the following year through, falling to Sutton United.

CLUB OFFICERS
The 1986-87 season produced another impressive display as the Stags reached the Surrey Premier Cup Final, but lost to Croydon before falling into a steady decline in subsequent years – regularly finishing in the bottom two of the Suburban League. After 21 years of competing in the Suburban League, the club decided to join the Surrey Premier League in June 1992 in order to compete in the pyramid system. Following a year of consolidation, major changes paved the future of the club at Franklyn Road – notably with the reappointment of Kim Harris as first-team manager.
First Team Manager
With the club expanding into both Sunday and youth football sides in the coming seasons, the club saw greater success in the following years. Lifting the Surrey Premier League Challenge Cup during the 199394 season, defeating Holmesdale after a replay, the club also finished as runners-up to Chobham in the league just one year later. Despite losing to Vandyke in the Surrey Premier League Challenge Cup at the second time of asking, the club was promoted to the Combined Counties League in the summer.
Goalkeeping Coach
However, the progression proved to be a challenge for Casuals. The first four seasons produced treacherous results, and the 1996-97 season saw the side finish bottom of the table. Fortunately, relegation was avoided with the Combined Counties League exercising is prerogative to maintain a minimum number of clubs in the Premier Division. February 1999 produced colossal developments for the club, as with the help of local charities, the installation of floodlights at Franklyn Road was completed – a major step for ground requirements should they progress in the league system. The appointment of Mick Sullivan and Garry Clark as joint managers in the summer of 1999 bought a dramatic improvement in terms of results. As well as a 5th place finish in the league, the club won the League Cup in 2000, beating Viking Greenford 4-2 in the final at Farnborough. The following season was also a relatively successful one, with a placing of 7th in the table and another appearance in the League Cup Final, beaten on this occasion by double-winners Cove 3-0 at Woking. Although 2002-03 proved a disappointment with the club finishing in a lowly 18th spot, the seeds of success had been sown with Spencer Collins taking over as first-team manager in November 2002. As a team capable of much better things slowly begun to take shape, ex-West Ham United and Fulham great Tony Gale was installed as Director of Football. After more team-building in 2003-04 and a big jump up the table to finish in 7th spot, the club took the Combined Counties by storm the ensuing season, finishing an impressive 26 points clear at the top of the table. After initially failing an FA ground inspection, the club launched a successful appeal and achieved their dream of promotion to Ryman League Division One for 2005-06. Finishing the maiden season in 15th place, subsequent seasons saw the club regularly finish in the bottom half. In 2009-10 the club achieved its best run in the FA Cup reaching the 3rd qualifying round. The club appointed Neil Shipperley manager in the summer of 2010 and managed to finish in 12th place, at the time the Stags’ record league finish in history. During early 2011 the club opened a new clubhouse and new changing facilities. Mick Sullivan returned at the helm in October 2011 following the resignation of Neil Shipperley, but was sacked a year later with ex-Farnborough, Crawley Town and Stevenage manager Danny Carroll taking the reins. Following a reprieval at the end of the 2012-13 season despite another imminent relegation, ex-Kingstonian assistant Mark Hams was instated as manager, with his brother Neil joining as assistant manager. Within their first season, the Hams brothers led the team to a club record league finish of 9th place. However, after struggling in their second season, Hams and the club decided to part their ways after nine league defeats without a single point. Players Liam Collins and Simon Huckle took up temporary coaching roles at the club, before being handed the permanent opportunity in November 2014. Results improved considerably, and the club achieved a historic double over Walton & Hersham for the first time in the club’s history, while defied expectations with an 18th place finish.

AN
EDITOR’S WELCOME
This evening we welcome players, supporters and officials of East Grinstead Town to the Moatside Stadium.
T
o say I’m relieved when writing these programme notes is somewhat of an understatement, and the ability to focus on an outstanding performance at Tooting & Mitcham United is something remarkable. Admittedly, after the opening two games, I personally had some doubts. I had witnessed an air of concern at Walton Road Stadium, and the changes implemented by the management duo worked immaculately and with impeccable timing. The potential was evident, but the ability was yet to be reached. Nonetheless, some new arrivals and a change in tactics produced some wonders at Imperial Fields. While it was only 90 minutes, and there is a long way to go before the end of the season, I am delighted to be able to reflect on the victory and believe we could be on the up, and more importantly to a position in which we belong as an ever-growing and improving community club. First of all, I would like to welcome two new faces to the backroom team. Danny has joined Hayley and Devon
in the physio room, while Carlos is working as a goalkeeping coach with both Tom Wellham and our juniors. We were yet to officially welcome them, and hope they enjoy their stay with the club. I would also like to make some corrections – and an apology – based on the first programme of the season. Despite announcing 15-year-old Calogero Scannella as a signing, he was unable to complete a move due to the Ryman League’s rule stating he must be 16 years of age. Calogero remains to be training with the first team and we hope he continues to develop and gain invaluable experience with the squad. I must also apologise to Anthony, who we called 32 years of age. He is of course still 31! For those who didn’t attend Saturday’s match, our season has certainly begun to turn around. Despite the unfortunate defeat to Ramsgate with ten men, and what could only be described as a shambolic performance at Molesey, today is the perfect opportunity to continue the scintillating performances. The new signings also looked like phenomenal captures, so if you’re yet to witness them in action, hopefully they
can recreate their form this evening. Every player gave their all at the weekend, and it was a delight to see some of the newer members of the squad battling for every opportunity. The boys looked unified as a squad, and I’m sure the changing room will be ecstatic today. We appeared to pick up a number of small knocks in the second half, but should the boys be fit to return to action immediately, it could make an interesting encounter. Considering our Isthmian League Cup form in recent seasons, which we look at in further detail in this week’s programme, it would be brilliant to kick-off our cup campaign with a prevailing performance. All but two League Cup Preliminary Round and First Round fixtures will have been played by the time of reading. Following today’s fixture, we return to the Moatside Stadium to take on Whyteleafe on Saturday. Meanwhile, our visitors will welcome Worthing in the Ryman Division One South. For now, we’ll turn our attention to the cup festivities, and hope for an entertaining game! Kane Brooker, Editor.
4 Unfortunately, some luckless timing has seen the player featured in our big interview, Matt Somner, depart from the club shortly before the printing of the matchday programme. As a result, we have been unable to reproduce a new interview in time. Somner has departed the club suddenly by mutual consent, and we wish him the very best in his career. We have decided to include his interview, but please consider he is no longer with the club when discussing his future aims with Walton Casuals.
MATT SOMNER: THE BIG INTERVIEW
-to-paper for the season. Somner made his competitive debut for the club in a league opener to Ramsgate, and has adopted the number four shirt to become his own in recent weeks. A utility player who can feature anywhere along the defensive or midfield lines, Somner has started out well in a holding midfield role, and will look to continue as a regular throughout the season. With Football League experience, having lined-up 93 times for Brentford before spells with the likes of Cambridge United, Bristol Rovers and Aldershot Town. att Somner was one of Following his first away fixture for ten summer recruits at the club in a trip to Molesey, Somner the Moatside Stadium, reflected on the difference in styles and having enjoyed an extensive between professional and non-league footballing career over the years, be- football. “I’d say it’s a lot more competicomes one of the more experienced tive, and it’s true people get stuck in a stars for the Stags. lot more to be honest! a great difference. Everyone still wants to play their football, and everyone still wants to win.” Making his professional debut 14 years ago, appearing late in the 2000-01 season at Griffin Park, Somner also impressed to be called up to the Welsh Under-21 squad in 2003 – with a trip to Italy ending in an unfortunate 8-1 defeat. Nonetheless, the Islington-born lad featured alongside Shaun Pejic (Vancouver Whitecaps), David Vaughan (Crewe Alexandra, Blackpool) and James Collins (West Ham United) to clash with the Azzurri – who boasted some impeccable talents. Four goals from 57-time internationally capped Alberto Gilardino alongside dominant display Roma stalwart Daniele De Rossi proved a harrowing defeat but phenomenal experience against the nation who won the Under-21 Championships a year later. But Somner’s highs and lows during his career came elsewhere, notably a Wednesday night at the Riverside in front of an 11,148 strong crowd in the Carling Cup. “Over the years I’ve had a few [highs

We beat them 1-0, and I was at Notts County (I think, it was so long ago!) However, I’ve also had some lows, and one was probably going to Cambridge United on loan from Brentford. I went there for about two months and then I signed to try and get them out of trouble. We got relegated.” However, he is now turning his attention to his future at the Moatside Stadium, as he provides a wealth of experience alongside the likes of former captain and manager Liam Collins, as well as fellow recent signing Tyrone Berry. Somner explained how manager Anthony Gale bought the midfielder down for pre-season, and the rest was history. “I know Anthony well, and he was the main reason I came down,” he added. I didn’t play much last season as I opted for a short break, but I was speaking to Anthony about how I wanted to return, and he invited me down to pre-season. Despite my year out I was willing to get myself fully fit to help the team and myself out. He’s given me the opportunity and I’ve taken it!”
Despite a mediocre start to the season for the Casuals, Somner is optimistic for the season ahead and hopes to give his very best for the team. Having experienced the Ryman Premier football on offer, the Ryman Division One South is something new for Somner but something he hopes he can relish. “I want to win every game, that’s the main aim and I’m sure that’s what most footballers always want to do. But to come here with Anthony, with the opportunity I’ve been handed, I was just want to enjoy my football and give back to him. It’s a win-win for myself and the club, but it would be even sweeter should be win most weeks!

ast Grinstead Town was established on 8 May 1890 as East Grinstead, and did not play their first competitive match until 1900, when they were founder members of the Mid-Sussex League. They won the league in 1902, and in 1909 were joint winners of the Sussex Junior Cup. In 1920 they were founder members of the Sussex County League, and finished bottom of the table in its first season. After finishing eleventh out of twelve the following season, they left the league. They returned in 1924, but after finishing bottom of the table again in both 1924–25 and 1925–26, they left again after failing to be re-elected and dropped into the Brighton League. Three in 1931–32. They returned to the Mid-Sussex, and after winning it in 1936–37, returned to the Sussex County League for a third spell. In the first season after World War II they were placed in the Eastern Division, but the league returned to a single division for the 1946–47 season. After a second division was added in 1952. East Grinstead remained in Division One until 1979, when they were relegated to Division Two. In 1988–89 they finished bottom of the division and were relegated to Division Three. After finishing third in 1990–91 they were promoted to Division Two, and two seasons later they finished third again, earning promotion to Division One. However, they finished bottom of the table in 1994–95 and were relegated back to Division Two.
In 1997 the club was renamed East Grinstead Town. They were promoted back to Division One after finishing third in 2002–03, but were relegated back to Division Two after two seasons. In 2007–08 they won Division Two, and were promoted back to Division One. They were promoted to the Isthmian League in 2013–14, and survived courtesy of a reprieval after a 22nd place finish. The club has four adult teams and five junior sides ranging in age from Under11s to Under-18s, which is planned to be greatly expanded for the 2014/15 season. They were awarded the prestigious FA Standard Chartered Development Club award in 2003 and were registered as a Community Amateur Sports Club in 2005. The Under-18s also feature in the Ryman Division One South, representing the club in the youth league.

MATCH
PREVIEW 19.08.15
Last season’s trip to East Court in the FA Trophy will spur on the Stags for another cup tie success story.
W
ith Walton Casuals welcoming East Grinstead Town to the Moatside Stadium today, Anthony Gale will be raring to go and hoping to ease through to the next round of the Isthmian League Cup. The visitors have lost two of their three league games this season, falling to defeat against Tooting & Mitcham and Molesey. However, they have managed to record three points with a victory against Whyteleafe. Despite picking up a number of slight knocks on Saturday, the Casuals should have an almost fully fit squad. Joel Atkin remains a doubt, and despite being a cup fixture, may continue to sit out to ensure he returns fully fit. However, after four recent signings, including Christian Nanetti who scored two minutes into his impressive debut last week, Gale has a wealth of options to choose from. Unfortunately, with East Grinstead Town opting against providing about squad information and having minimal social media updates, we are unable to bring you any news, changes or injuries for the visitors. Please note the line-up
provided on the back cover may also be inaccurate for this reason. Last season, the Stags came out victorious against East Grinstead Town in a 6-1 win in the FA Trophy Preliminary Round Replay, initially held to a draw at the Waterside Stadium. The Wasps will now be looking to record their first victory against Walton Casuals, and hope it also seals their cup fate. Gabriel Odunaike has now struck two goals in his last two outings, and the recent change in formation for the hosts could see him feature in his preferred wide position once again. And with Moses Ashikodi netting on his debut, he may also hope for another. Tony Beckingham’s side have already been handed away ties at Molesey and Cray Wanderers in the FA Cup and FA Trophy respectively, while the Casuals prepare for the likes of Whitstable Town and Sittingbourne, the latter seeing Walton once again at the Moatside Stadium. With a place in the Isthmian League Cup Second Round awaiting, both clubs will hope to record a victory and in time find out their opponents in the next round.

Former manager Tony Coade will work alongside Freeman as head coach, a role he previously occupied. Chairman Brian Suckling said: “Tony is delighted with the appointment which he helped to instigate. Darren has a wealth of League experience having played for Brighton, Fulham, Gillingham and Brentford. He previously spent five years at Whitehawk as their manager helping them to series of promotions. “Tony has done a magnificent job during a very difficult period for the club and I want to put on record my gratitude for his loyalty and professionalism which he has carried out the role of manager and head coach.”

One name familiar to Robins’ fans is the return of forward Kingsley Aikhionbare, who has been away at university since scoring that dramatic injury-time winner last September away at Hastings United. Another forward, Craig Mullen has also been handed a chance by Howard - he scored two goals in three pre-season appearances this summer. Finally, player-coach Glen Boosey has also been registered for duty - having featured for the likes of Sutton United, Hampton & Richmond Borough, Bromley, Lingfield and Corinthian-Casuals during his playing career.
P
eacehaven & Telscombe have signed 23-year-old centre forward Javlon Campbell. Campbell made his debut for the club in Tuesday night’s 2-2 draw with Dorking - scoring on his debut. After leaving Bolton Wanderers, Campbell played for Carshalton Athletic, Histon, Billericay Town, Kingstonian and Cray Wanderers as is a proven goalscorer.

lacklustre second-half performance proved to be the difference in a 4-1 defeat to local rivals Molesey, despite a Gabriel Odunaike converting a penalty in sight of a potential comeback. After a disappointing ending to the Stags’ league opener on the weekend, in which a courageous battle with ten men saw Ramsgate emerge victorious, it was the same outcome, but a different story for Walton in their first away trip of the season. With the Mick Burgess Memorial Trophy absent in pre-season due to the Moles’ promotion back to the Ryman set-up, supporters were expected a well-battled, close encounter between the two sides. An early challenge from Luke Olley, which saw the full-back become the first name in the referee’s notebook, suggested the fiery nature was evident in both sides, but the encounter was far from close in the closing stages of the fixture. Scott Day came close to opening the scoring for the Stags after Peter Wedgeworth’s corner was found with a headed effort, while Luke Medley almost found the net after beating the defender with skill before struggling to unleash an effort on goal. Odunaike also tried to open his goal-scor-
ing campaign after a fine line-up between Day and Olley saw a dangerous cross drilled into the box, but proved to be out of reach of the striker. The Stags looked in control, and despite sporadic threats from the Molesey striking duo, Tom Wellham looked comfortable and in composed when being tested with some fine efforts from the hosts. However, the Casuals soon paid for failing to take their chances, as Reis Stanislaus pounced on a defensive error to slot home with composure. Heading into the break three points were still to play for, and a half-time change saw Rhys Paul replace Luke Olley to make his debut for the club. The bold decision saw five feature at the back to commence the half, with Liam Collins dropping back to a defensive role. Nonetheless, James McShane popped up to double Molesey’s lead early in the second half, requiring just eight minutes to land a further blow on Walton’s hopes of securing their first victory of the season. It appeared there was a mountain to climb for the Stags, but Odunaike soon broke and when launching a formidable attack on the back four, was hastily pulled down in the box. There was no hesitation from the referee in awarding the penalty, and Odunaike stepped up and sent Liam
Allen – who had impressed considerably in the first-half – the wrong way. Another change, which saw Tyrone Berry come on for Billy Dunn, suggested the Casuals were preparing to fight back and find the all-important equaliser. Preseason had proved the capability of coming back from a goal down, but it proved too much to ask as the second-half performance destabilised. While the weather affected the pitch, and led to numerous players from both sides struggling to play to their full abilities, Molesey put their opportunities to use, with Stanislaus soon securing his second and the Moles’ third of the evening in the 65th minutes. The visitors struggled to gain any control of the game once the lead had been extended again, and it didn’t take long for McShane to complete his brace in the 73rd minute, all but sealing maximum points for his side and a disappointing scoreline that slipped the Stags into the relegation zone. Despite the best efforts of Anthony Gale and Jack Johnson on the touchline, little could be done to overcome the recent Combined Counties and Combination Cup double champions. Despite the introduction of Khari Oriogun for Luke Medley with eight minutes remaining to also make his club debut, it was disappointment all round as the side sat in 22nd place.
F
rom one cup tie to another, the recent Surrey Senior Cup draw handed us the opportunity to host Ryman Premier side Kingstonian, who have enjoyed very mixed results this season. The Casuals were drawn as one of the first teams, and were given the home advantage. However, with the K’s drawn as the opponents , a challenging fixture was set. Tommy Williams’ side will have made the trip to Harrow Borough in the League Cup yesterday evening, and they will have hoped to continue their form from their 7-0 demolition of local side Metropolitan Police. A hat-trick from Dan Bennett, as well as goals from Pelayo Pico-Gomez, Peter Dean, Jake Kempton and Tyron Smith, inflicted Police’s heaviest defeat in over 20 years, although it was a very different story for the hosts in comparison to their previous fixture. Now sitting in 15th place in the seventh tier, with one victory and two defeats, Kingstonian suffered a humiliating trouncing. While their victory had been their biggest since 1998, just five days before they fell to a 3-0 defeat to Leatherhead with ten men, all three goals from the Tanners netted before the break. While they have shown inconsistency in their form, with the match potentially played as late as early December, an interesting encounter could be formed given the Stags’ recent rise and extraordinary display.
