FOOTBALL CLUB

WALTON CASUALS

Walton Casuals Football Club was formed in July 1948, owing its early origins to members of the Armed Forces who formed a Sunday side, having played only friendly fixtures throughout the 1946-47 season. The club commenced its inaugural season in Division 1 of the Surrey Intermediate (Central) League, playing at Elm Grove Recreation Ground. Soon gaining promotion to the Premier Division during the 1952-53 season, Walton Casuals later finished as runners-up on three occasions: 1954-55, 1956-57 and 1964-65. With the disbandment of the Surrey Intermediate (Central) League in 1965, the club opted to move to the league’s Western Section for three seasons.

However, in 1969 Casuals joined the new Surrey Senior League, during which they moved into their recent home at Franklyn Road. Just two years later the Stags become founder members of the Suburban League, and after one season at Walton & Hersham’s Stompond Lane, moved into Liberty Lane at Addlestone for eight seasons. Nonetheless, they soon returned to Franklyn Road – which had remained host to the reserve squad – while playing in the Surrey Combination League Walton Casuals scooped their first major honour during the 1982-83 season, as manager Kim Harris guided the club to become champions of the Southern section of the Suburban League, while also setting a league record of an impressive 23 games unbeaten. Casuals could only manage a second place finish the following year through, falling to Sutton United.

CLUB OFFICERS

The 1986-87 season produced another impressive display as the Stags reached the Surrey Premier Cup Final, but lost to Croydon before falling into a steady decline in subsequent years – regularly finishing in the bottom two of the Suburban League. After 21 years of competing in the Suburban League, the club decided to join the Surrey Premier League in June 1992 in order to compete in the pyramid system. Following a year of consolidation, major changes paved the future of the club at Franklyn Road – notably with the reappointment of Kim Harris as first-team manager.

First Team Manager

With the club expanding into both Sunday and youth football sides in the coming seasons, the club saw greater success in the following years. Lifting the Surrey Premier League Challenge Cup during the 199394 season, defeating Holmesdale after a replay, the club also finished as runners-up to Chobham in the league just one year later. Despite losing to Vandyke in the Surrey Premier League Challenge Cup at the second time of asking, the club was promoted to the Combined Counties League in the summer.

Goalkeeping Coach

However, the progression proved to be a challenge for Casuals. The first four seasons produced treacherous results, and the 1996-97 season saw the side finish bottom of the table. Fortunately, relegation was avoided with the Combined Counties League exercising is prerogative to maintain a minimum number of clubs in the Premier Division. February 1999 produced colossal developments for the club, as with the help of local charities, the installation of floodlights at Franklyn Road was completed – a major step for ground requirements should they progress in the league system. The appointment of Mick Sullivan and Garry Clark as joint managers in the summer of 1999 bought a dramatic improvement in terms of results. As well as a 5th place finish in the league, the club won the League Cup in 2000, beating Viking Greenford 4-2 in the final at Farnborough. The following season was also a relatively successful one, with a placing of 7th in the table and another appearance in the League Cup Final, beaten on this occasion by double-winners Cove 3-0 at Woking. Although 2002-03 proved a disappointment with the club finishing in a lowly 18th spot, the seeds of success had been sown with Spencer Collins taking over as first-team manager in November 2002. As a team capable of much better things slowly begun to take shape, ex-West Ham United and Fulham great Tony Gale was installed as Director of Football. After more team-building in 2003-04 and a big jump up the table to finish in 7th spot, the club took the Combined Counties by storm the ensuing season, finishing an impressive 26 points clear at the top of the table. After initially failing an FA ground inspection, the club launched a successful appeal and achieved their dream of promotion to Ryman League Division One for 2005-06. Finishing the maiden season in 15th place, subsequent seasons saw the club regularly finish in the bottom half. In 2009-10 the club achieved its best run in the FA Cup reaching the 3rd qualifying round. The club appointed Neil Shipperley manager in the summer of 2010 and managed to finish in 12th place, at the time the Stags’ record league finish in history. During early 2011 the club opened a new clubhouse and new changing facilities. Mick Sullivan returned at the helm in October 2011 following the resignation of Neil Shipperley, but was sacked a year later with ex-Farnborough, Crawley Town and Stevenage manager Danny Carroll taking the reins. Following a reprieval at the end of the 2012-13 season despite another imminent relegation, ex-Kingstonian assistant Mark Hams was instated as manager, with his brother Neil joining as assistant manager. Within their first season, the Hams brothers led the team to a club record league finish of 9th place. However, after struggling in their second season, Hams and the club decided to part their ways after nine league defeats without a single point. Players Liam Collins and Simon Huckle took up temporary coaching roles at the club, before being handed the permanent opportunity in November 2014. Results improved considerably, and the club achieved a historic double over Walton & Hersham for the first time in the club’s history, while defied expectations with an 18th place finish.

AN

EDITOR’S WELCOME

This evening we welcome players, supporters and officials of Whyteleafe to the Moatside Stadium.

H

opefully, we head into today’s fixture having recorded our first victory at the Moatside Stadium and have sealed a place in the Isthmian League Cup second round. Unfortunately, I am having to write these programme notes before our game with East Grinstead Town, so I’m yet to know the outcome. Nonetheless, after last weekend’s clash with Tooting & Mitcham United, I have full confidence in our management and players. Today marks a return to league action, and of course everyone will hope to continue the form demonstrated against the Terrors. The new signings, who we have looked at a little more in today’s programme, all looked like great captures, and the trio who featured in the 3-0 victory all contributed to the victory in some form. Our meeting with Whyteleafe this afternoon could be very important for how we head into the remaining fixtures this month. With the Stags currently in 13th, the Leafe sit in 14th – separated only by goal difference. Only two teams remain with maximum points after just three games, with

Herne Bay and Folkestone Invicta both facing challenges this afternoon. Looking back at our Casual Talk matchday programme from Whyteleafe’s visit in January 2007, the Chairman’s notes show Whyteleafe heading to the Waterside having just recorded their first victory at home in an astounding 11 months. After their fifth place, play-off position finish last season, the extent of their improvement and climb is certainly evident. Despite losing a few first-team regulars this season, with former Stags Sol Patterson-Bohner and Greg Andrews coming to mind after moves to Tooting & Mitcham and Carshalton Athletic respectively, they will be raring to go with both sides facing a potential 6th place finish by the end of the night. Following today, attention will certainly be turned to our first Walton Derby of the season. With both surprisingly coming in quick succession, the first comes a little closer to our former home as we head to Stompond Lane. The Swans currently sit a point above us with one victory, one draw and one defeat, and hopefully over the course of today and Tuesday we overtake them in

the league table. I have also seen a few former Casuals players now with our local rivals. Luke Badiali appears to be the new number one for the club, while Josh Cover recently told me at the Tooting match he remains with the club after a move last season. Andre Scarlett, who joined us briefly last season, is again on the books of Walton & Hersham, as well as Andrew Mensah. Whyteleafe, on the other hand, have to wait until Wednesday for a trip to South Park, who have already recorded two wins this season. Due to having two consecutive home fixtures, and having to produce both prior to the first fixture, we are also unable to bring any reports to you. While the East Grinstead Town report will now be on waltoncasuals.com, we have also looked back at some older fixtures which may be of interest to some of our regulars - many of which represented the club ‘back in the day’. They come courtesy of Jack Mott. For now, all is to play for between the two sides, and I hope for a thrilling match-up between the two clubs. Enjoy the game! Kane Brooker, Editor.

fter a debut goal and a thrilling performance, Moses Ashikodi has settled in to life at Walton Casuals pretty well. One of four signings announced shortly before a trip to Tooting & Mitcham United, the former international found the net just 33 minutes into his spell with the club. However, Ashikodi’s story goes a long way back from just lining-up alongside Gabriel Odunaike and Tyrone Berry at the Imperial Fields. Now 28 years of age, the Nigerian born, Antigua & Barbuda international has also featured for England. Ashikodi’s career begun at the Den, home of Millwall. After progressing through the youth ranks, he became the youngest player to make a first team appearance for Millwall – aged 15 years and 240 days. A debut at Brighton & Hove Albion saw him come on a 73rd minute substitute in February 2003, also making him the youngest player in the Football League between 1998 and 2008. In the same season, he

WHO IS MOSES ASHIKODI? featured another four times for Millwall from the bench, and was subsequently named Millwall’s Schoolboy of the Year award for a second successive season. After departing the club by mutual consent, Ashikodi signed a two-year deal with West Ham United, at the time competing in the Championship, following a successful trial. Unfortunately, he didn’t make a first-appearance, and instead joined Gillingham on loan for five months, where he made four appearances from the bench. He then enjoyed another trial, this time with Scottish Premier League outfit Rangers. “I know that I did not have the best of times at my previous clubs but this is now behind me and all I want to do now is give 110% for Rangers,” he said upon his arrival. “It is a fresh start and I am really looking forward to playing in Scotland and scoring goals again.” However, his only appearance for the first team came against Celtic in April 2006. A return to England saw Ashikodi join Watford for a nominal fee, putting

pen-to-paper on a two-and-a-half year deal. Scoring the final goal on his debut in a 4-1 victory over Stockport County in the FA Cup final, he featured in the Premier League a few weeks later to take on Aston Villa. He was subsequently loaned to Bradford City for a month, but extended the move until the end of the season. Scoring two goals in eight appearances, his spell was unfortunately cut short by a broken leg ruling him out for the season. Following his recovery, he headed to League One side Swindon Town. 10 appearances led to further complications, after a loose screw on a plate required surgery and ruled him out once more. Once fit, he joined Hereford United on loan and scored in his second game for the club, going on to make eight appearances for the club. With the completion of his loan deal, Ashikodi saw him contract terminated at Watford. He soon enjoyed trials with Luton Town and Shrewsbury Town – impressing with the reserves, and took the latter option for the remainder of the 2008/09 season. He

also featured at Wembley Stadium in the Legaue Two play-off final before being released at the end of the campaign. Ashikodi then dropped into nonleague football, joining Conference Premier club Kettering Town. Coming off the bench in the second-half on his debut, he managed to score and assist in a 2-0 victory, before featuring in the FA Cup Second Round in a clash with Leeds United. Next up was a move to Ebbsfleet United, making his debut the same day he signed. Featuring against former club Kettering, he scored from the spot to make an immediate impact. Following a two-year return to Kettering, he joined Conference rivals York City – again scoring against Kettering in a 7-0 victory. The loan was soon made permanent, and he featured weekly for the club. He then resigned for Ebbsfleet United, before heading to the Isthmian League to join Enfield Town. He has since gone on to feature for Margate, Farnborough, Cray Wanderers (on two occasions), AFC Hornchurch, Eastbourne Borough and Maldon & Tiptree. After featuring for Cray Wander-

ers last season, he has now made the switch to Walton Casuals and will look to captivate on his debut performance and goal against a Tooting side naming a number of former Stags. However, he also heads to the Moatside Stadium with international experience. Following his promising performances for Millwall, Ashikodi made his debut for England Under-16s in a 3-1 victory over Belgium in May 2002, scoring 29 minutes into his debut. He also featured in the 2002 Victory Shield, scoring the only goal to record a 1-0 victory over Wales. His final appearance came in a draw against Germany, having scored three goals in eight appearances. He was then promoted to the Under-17s, and made his debut in a 4-0 victory at the Faroe Islands in the 2002 Nordic Tournament. He netted his first goal in a 1-0 victory over the United States, and went on to make five appearances. A single appearance for the Under18s saw Ashikodi feature in a 0-0 draw with Norway in 2005, before making his debut with the Under-19s a few months later. Scoring both goals on his debut in a 2-1 victory over Switzerland, he ended

his youth career with three goals in three games. He then made his international debut for Antigua and Barbuda in 2012, coming off the bench in a 3-1 defeat to Guatemala in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. He has currently made two appearances for the national side, but will hope to make many more under the guidance of Anthony Gale at the Moatside. Speaking to The Daily Mail back in 2012, Ashikodi also spoke of his off-thefield aims. “Football kept breaking my heart every two minutes and I was drinking just to blank everything out,” he says. Having turned himself round considerably, the past is forgotten as he trains as a fitness instructor. Now he is trying to turn things around “I’ve stopped drinking, I’m eating right, and the course is teaching me properly about my body,’ he says. ‘I’m only 25 [at the time] but I’ve got my hunger back and would like to go on trial with a league club this summer.’ While he’s no longer with a league club, Ashikodi has settled in well and hopefully his form in front of goal will continue

hyteleafe F.C. was formed in 1946, replacing another club, Whyteleafe Albion, which had existed before World War II. The new club initially played junior football in such local leagues as the Thornton Heath & District League, before gaining senior status and joining the Surrey Senior League in 1958, at which time they moved to the Church Road ground where they play to this day. Whyteleafe were Surrey Senior League champions on at least one occasion in the 1960s, before switching to the London Spartan League in 1975. In 1981 they switched to the Athenian League and then in 1984 to the Isthmian League. In 1989 they were promoted to

Division One, a level at which they played for 23 years (albeit with league reorganisations placing the team in Division One South from 2002 to 2004 and again in 2006). In 1999, they reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time in their history and held Chester City to a 0–0 draw before losing the replay. At the end of the 2011–12 season the club were relegated from the Isthmian League to the Kent League. After one season of consolidation the club was promoted from the renamed Southern Counties East League back to the Isthmian League at the end of the 2013–14 season. Their first season after their return saw the club guided to an impressive 5th place – qualifying the Leafe for the play-offs. However, they crashed out in

the semi-finals after losing to Folkestone Invicta. Whyteleafe play their home games at Church Road, a site which was formerly farmland. The farm’s existing buildings were converted into the clubhouse and dressing rooms, and the club originally planned to add a running track and cricket pitch to the complex, although were soon abandoned. Floodlights were added in the early 1980s, while a new main stand was also added in 1999 for the club’s FA Cup First Round fixture. The tie also bought in a record attendance of 2,164. Some of the turnstiles soon added to the ground were purchased from Stoke City’s Victoria Ground, following their move to the Britannia Stadium in 1997, while a media gantry was added ahead of the 2015/16 season.

His travels have seen him play, amongst others for Southend Utd, Woking, Aldershot, AFC Wimbledon, Accrington Stanley and Torquay Utd. He joined Leafe from Merstham in 2013 scoring a brace on his debut. The 34-year-old, born locally in Epsom, has also represented England as a semi-professional, scoring four games in seven appearances for the England National Game XI (England C) in 2003 and 2004.

PREVIEW 22.08.15

With just goal difference separating the two sides, all is to play for with a pivotal three points up for grabs.

W

ith three points on offer, both sides will be raring to break away from another with only goal difference currently separating the Leafe and the Stags. After the mid-week Isthmian League Cup clashes – the outcomes yet to be known at the time of printing – Walton will hope to continue their league form witnessed with a number of changes in a trip to Imperial Fields. After Ashikodi, Nanetti, Bello-Balogun, Blendell and Newman all made their debuts against Tooting & Mitcham United, they will all hope to feature once again to make their league home debuts against Whyteleafe. Today’s visitors saw a number of key figures leave over the summer, with Alex Penfold, Sol Patterson-Bohner and Greg Andrews all departing from Church Road. In an attempt to bounce back, they will also be hoping for their second Ryman Division One South victory of the season. The Casuals will be without the suspended Billy Dunn, while youthful striker Joel Atkin may still be a doubt while on the road to recovery. Despite a slight injury scare for Gabriel Odun-

aike in the closing stages of the fixture seven days ago, the striker is likely to be available to feature alongside Ashikodi and Berry again. With the potential to fall into the relegation zone or sit narrowly outside a play-off position, the Leafe will hope to continue the form they demonstrated last time out against the Casuals – albeit played at Church Road when they recorded a comfortable 4-1 victory. Having scored just three goals all season – and all coming in their 3-2 victory over recently relegated and early strugglers Peacehaven & Telscombe, they’ll be hoping to add to their tally, while Walton goalkeeper Tom Wellham will hope his resilient back four will ensure he has little to do throughout the 90 minutes. Rhys Paul, Peter Wedgeworth, Joseph Debayo and Luke Olley all looked on fine form at Tooting, but the return of Quincy Rowe could spark a dilemma. Whyteleafe recently fell to East Grinstead Town in league action, and with the Stags playing the Wasps last Wednesday, the momentum could be set based on recent performances in the Isthmian League Cup.

RYMAN ROUND-UP

arnborough’s first four games of the season had been postponed by a decision of The Football Association after they lodged an appeal to The FA over a League decision to require the club to pay a £30,000 bond to the League. The League confirmed that Farnborough’s opening day trip in the Ryman Premier on Saturday to VCD Athletic, their home games against Harrow Borough on Monday 10 August and Wingate & Finchley on Saturday 15 August and a Robert Dyas League Cup tie at Cherrywood Road against Lewes on Monday 17 August have been postponed. The Ryman League took the decision to make an application to suspend the fixtures in the interests of other member clubs. The FA, the Ryman League and the club have agreed that the situation should be resolved as quickly as possible with the appeal set to be heard in the week commencing August 17. Ryman League chairman Nick Robinson said: “The initial decision of the Board was that no matches would be played unless the bond was paid in by 10am on Thursday morning. “The appeal only went in on Tuesday night, but, collectively, the Board still felt it sensible to request to the Appeal Board that Farnborough’s matches be suspended until it was all resolved.”

Officials at the Reachfields Stadium have sent their condolences to the 18-year-old forward’s family and friends after what was described as a “tragic accident” The Cannons paid tribute to a player who had been tipped for the top and was looking forward to starting his first full senior season for manager Tim Dixon.

MEET THE NEW SIGNING

CHRISTIAN NANETTI W

alton Casuals recently completed the signing of Italian winger Christian Nanetti from Dover Athletic. The 23-year-old joins the Stags after 20 appearances for the National League outfit, but has a wealth of experience across the leagues. Starting out with the Queens Park Rangers Under-18 set-up, Nanetti soon played for teams including Raith Rovers, Ashford Town, Harrow Borough and Lewes. He then impressed to earn a move to AFC Wimbledon, before joining Havant & Waterlooville and Dover Athletic – also enjoying a loan spell with Whitehawk. Nanetti also featured on national television in 2010, appearing on Soccer AM at ‘Skill Skool’. Being paired with another player in the QPR set-up, the aim was to impress with your skills more than your opponent. Nanetti claimed victory, over none other than England international and recent Manchester City signing Raheem Sterling (pictured). The right midfielder made his debut against Tooting & Mitcham United, and scored less than two minutes into his debut when replacing Moses Ashikodi.

The efforts of a number of club officials and members, alongside the groundsman, in clearing the lines of snow were rewarded with the referee declaring the pitch playable. Due to the frequent snow flurries throughout the first half, broom handlers remained available to keep the lines snow-free! Just two changes were made to the squad from the previous week, with Jeff Green and Kenny Johnstone unavailable. John Sertin and Gordon Pinhey subsequently filled in, and justified their promotion from the reserves set-up. The Waters demonstrated an advantage in the first half, and put the strong wind and intermittent snow showers to their advantage, although frittered away many scoring

many scoring opportunities. Midway through the first half the visitors came close to opening their account, only for their attack to be thwarted by a tremendous save by Walton’s Peter Davies between the sticks. Just minutes later, Virginia came agonizingly close once again, forcing Trevor Ellis into action. With their left winger just required to tap the ball into an empty net, hesitation allowed Ellis to storm back and block the shot before making a clearance. The Casuals began to struggle with the window and snow battling against them, but with the abrupt end to the treacherous conditions, the hosts took a lead late in the first half through Eddie James. With a corner awarded in the 42nd minute, Vic Barton lofted the set-piece high over the goalmouth, allowing the unmarked forward to pounce and head home. Walton soon made much better use of the conditions in the second half, and were eventually rewarded briefly before the hour mark. A constant flurry of attacking put the Waters defence under pressure and worried them, and it was only a matter of time until Pinhey drove an Eddie James pass goalwards, finding the net with the help of a defender.

Depsite the best efforts of Virginia to fight back and commence a comeback, the Casuals’ defence remained unremitting in keeping a clean sheet and calmed all attacking threats. A long clearance in the 69th minute was then latched onto by Pinhey, who during an impressive performance ran on unchallenged to drive the ball past from an advancing number one. Now approaching the game’s dying moments, the victory looked set in stone and Walton continued to govern the game. In a heated moment, Pinhey was soon brought down outside the box, only for the Waters’ defender to kick the ball away and hit the match official in the face in disgust. Unsurprisingly, he saw red and left his side with ten minutes for the final minutes, but it had little influence as Walton Casuals recorded victory over a ‘bogey’ side. A team photograph was also taken prior to kick-off between the two sides, but Casuals player Trevor Ellis has previously said no one has ever seen it! The match report comes courtesy of life vicepresident Jack Mott, who previously listed the fixture as ‘A Match To Remember #13’.

C

lub records currently list Mark Postins as the all-time top scorer with 111 goals. However, those records begin during the 1992/93 season, when the Stags made the step up to the Surrey County Primary League. With the club in existence since 1948, many seasons were spent in lower divisions with the current records do not count. However, the club’s all-time highest goalscorers since the club founded is Raymond “Ray” Johnson. Ray joined the Casuals at the start of the 1952-53 season. He was a centre forward, proudly wearing the number nine shirt, and became a specialist goalscorers. In his debut season, Johnson scored 52 goals, while also achieving a club record of seven goals in a single match – when the first XI beat West Byfleet Reserves 11-2 in a home league game on Saturday 14 February 1953. The season also resulted in the club finishing as runners-up of the Surrey Intermediate (Central) League Division One. The next season saw the club promoted to the Premier Division, with a step up from junior to intermediate status. Johnson managed 18 goals,

but made amends in the following three seasons (1954-55, 1955-96 and 1956-57) when the team were runs up, third and runners up respectively – with Johnson scoring over 60 goals in each of those seasons. Seeing his tally rise to over 200, he was presented with an engraved plague by the club for his achievement. He continued his successful goalscoring during the next two seasons, and had notched over 350 goals by May 1959. Johnson then decided to switch from attack to defence and feature as a right-back. Playing in the defence from the start of the 1959-60 season, he moved to the second XI until the start of the 1963-94 season, scoring another 17 goals. Johnson had the opportunity of playing in higher grade football with local senior clubs, and was also watched by Derby County’s chief scout, but was happy to remain with the club. In 1957-58 he took over as club Hon. Secretary when the then current officer, Ron Jones, wanted a year’s leave of absence. In 2000, the club heard of the death of Raymond Johnson in Milton Keynes, aged in his mid-sixties.

With a drifting ball down the left wing, a Redhill defender intercepted Pink’s goal kick, only for it to spin away into the path of Mills. Claiming his second assist of the afternoon, his final was steered home by super substitute Harris, and the Stags were home and dry. Unfortunately, the playing records for the fixture have been lost. As a result, the only known players to feature were those included in the original report. With the Casuals reaching the Surrey Premier Cup Final, spirits were high. A trip to Dorking FC’s Meadowbank would see the team play Croydon Reserves. Featuring on 15th April 1987, Walton Casuals fell to a 5-0 defeat and crashed out at the final hurdle. While the Stags couldn’t lift the trophy in future seasons, they finished as runners-up of the Surrey Premier League during the 1994/95 season, while also winning the Surrey Premier League Challenge Cup in 1993/94, and also finishing as runners-up the following season. The match report comes courtesy of life vicepresident Jack Mott, who previously listed the fixture as ‘A Match To Remember #10’.
