AN EXTREMELY SINCERE COLLECTION.
U
ninspiring with its simplistic imitation of a house, the conventional kennel is a morbid
space that stoically characterizes the relationship between dog and man. That is until Kenya Hara (Creative Director of MUJI) kick-started his newly founded company, Architecture for Dogs (AFD). Breaking into this niche field, its aesthetic mission is bold : By revolutionizing the form and challenging the functions of the kennel, the AFD collection will ignite a new joy within the relationship between dog and man. This collection comprises 13 extremely sincere yet sophisticated breed-specific designs. To realize this, AFD’s creative roster collaborates with 13 world-class designers who each picked a breed of choice before embarking on the design journey. These architects and designers include Kenya Hara himself (Teacup Poodle), Atelier Bow-Wow (Dachshund), Shigeru Ban (Papillion), MVRDV (Beagle), Toyo Ito (Shiba), Konstantin Grcic (Toy Poodle), Kazuyo Sejima (Bichon Frise)and Kengo Kuma (Pug), among others. Conceived years ago, Hara desired Architecture for Dogs to be an innovative venture that blurs the lines between exhibition concept, commercial company and crowd-sourced, interactive online project for the global community. With that in mind, he worked in conjunction with Imprint Venture Lab on a multi-tiered business strategy which incorporates online interactivity, cultural exhibitions and integration of a traditional retail component, to see the project to fruition.

Though straight-forward, translating the theory into living reality does not come easily to all interior designers. The craft of blending and balancing individualism into a harmonious palette is one that requires keen intuition and creative skill. Other than a pool enveloping one side of the building, the house’s most striking feature is perhaps the open rooftop garden, peeking out and above it, as canvas to the bright blue skies above. Kiev-born businesswoman, she began following her interior design dream in 2003 when she left a flourishing graphic
design career in her adopted home of Berlin to retrain in London. Drawing on her natural artistic flair and experience at the forefront of the German capital’s creative hub, she excelled in a range of interior design projects across London and Germany. From thence, came the birth of her business start-up, Anna Casa Interiors. Today, the 31 years old entrepreneur and interior designer has expanded her business into the heart of London’s luxury design scene on Hay Hill in Mayfair where she works on international projects for select residential and commercial clients. So who is she exactly? As glamorous as her works are, she is the talented and much sought after interior designer, Anna Dodonova. Possessing zest and aesthetic flair, Anna has gained an impressive reputation for spatial creations of timeless, unapologetic charm – a signature of what is widely known as the Anna Casa style. This issue, we get a glimpse into her world of uncompromising luxury and the design journey behind it as she reveals one of her latest projects, the St Johns Wood apartment in Northwest London. Of cosy proportions, the two-bedroom apartment belongs to a young Saudi Arabian family based in Jeddah. Because the family travels out of the country often, the apartment was acquired with the intention of creating a home away from home. It was to be a space of plush comforts and familial appeal but not without the elements of glamour and luxury. Well acquainted with Dodonova’s works, the family naturally entrusted her with the task of creating the perfect get-away apartment.

Given its apartment setting, the design concept of the dining room is unusual but outstanding. The large sitting bench, designed by Anna Casa, effectively breaks up the striking velvet wallpaper, allowing the room to be an elegant push and pull of boldness and subtleties.
Taking on the project, Dodonova relished the challenges it presented. And her design philosophy and approach, rightly prepares her for it. Speaking of the latter, Dodonova honestly declares, “I work with the most high-end, good quality, luxurious brands. But I am also very spiritual.” This is reflected in her regular travel bouts along what she terms as her “design circuit”. A woman on a relentless quest for beautiful and inspiring creations, her destination choices are determined by her desire to connect with spiritual experiences and increase her personal energy flow. Such is the philosophy that extends into her professional life and all her design projects, “I believe your home reflects your whole life. Thus, good design is about balance.” That said, her first challenge was to create the dream abode that the homeowners have envisioned – an intricate balance between glamour, modernity, comfort and classicism. Using a predominantly black and white palette, Dodonova evokes a sense of classicism across the home. Punctuated with silk fabrics and refined materials, the apartment is also all about glamorous pleasures. Coupled with furnishings in natural brown wood, the space is given homely depth and familial warmth. All of which are further facilitated with the expansive variety of lighting options in the home. Whether the client desires a romantic evening spent nestled in the luxurious fabric sofa from Fendi Home or a bright night of soccer enthusiasm as they catch the live matches on TV, the homeowners are able to manipulate the mood in the apartment with a simple flick of the switch.

The second challenge involves overcoming architectural shortcomings. Located in a building no more than 10 years old, the apartment is described as “new construction”. “What this means,” explains Dodonova, “is that there are certain limitations that come with its innate architecture. In this case, unlike older buildings, the St Johns wood apartments have relatively lower ceilings which impedes on the sense of spaciousness.” To counter this, Dodonova’s technique is simple but timeless. Allowing the entrance hall to flow smoothly into the living area without the obstruction of partitions and such, Dodonova enlarged the sense of space. Setting a mirror by Creazioni framed in a custom made unit by Bessana along the entrance enables light to bounce into the deep and narrow corridor. The aesthetic result is an apartment space that remains bright and airy, losing none of its atmospheric charm even when the London weather is not at its best. Rightly balanced with its bold subtleties and luxurious charm, the apartment is yet another stunning testimony of Dodonova’s design prowess.

A
rchitect Tommie Wilhelmsen’s practice is based upon the idealogy of focusing on
the big picture, especially in residential designs. Fundamentals for all his designs are the basic elements of wind, terrain, sun, rain, landscape, and climate. Projects in his care are developed not just through practical planning, but also through visual research. The playful, naïve, optimistic, and useless have just as big a value in the design process as the logical or the practical. Essential to this is the belief that architecture can change your life. Good architecture, he believes, is a place that is never easy to leave. Located in a remote area of Norway, this impressive Trekronekabin is perched elegantly on a steep rock on the Sjernnaroy islands. The site is only accessible by boat, adding to its retreatstyle charm, and is nestled serenely within the surrounding landscape. Dubbed the ‘cabin in the treetops,’ Trekonekabin is a dramatic lodge hidden deep in the woods. Using only local materials, including oak, pine and fir taken directly from island, Wilhelmsen has created a sleek but sympathetic intervention into the landscape. Very highly insulated, the house at 100 square metres in living space, is designed to touch the site lightly, making a minimal impact on the environment. To complement the natural surrounding, sober black and natural oak tone are consistently used throughout the house.

In every other moment, tea parties are a tireless consumption of pots, cups and such other things. This is not because we ran out of reasons but because whilst we were trying our darnest to pick only the best and the prettiest of tea sets, it dawned on us that it was almost Mission Impossible. Considering the variety of colours, shapes and sizes, it’s a no wonder the Mad Hatter himself has such a voracious collection. And we don’t blame him. We love the pastel blue set from Franc Franc for its dreamy hue and the organic combination it makes with the wooden Bondy Saucer. And we simply couldn’t ignore the contemporary brilliance of iwannagohome’s Degrenne Safran teapot

For those of us confined to apartments and units, gardening is not the most obvious of pastimes. But that’s not to say that we should not live off the land when we’re stuck off the ground. Itching with green fingers, Belle Chung and Melody Tedja dug deep into the luscious foliage of the flower markets and found out what it takes to create a garden within our urban abodes.
PLOT & PLAN Good planning is essential. Apartment units have limited space and varying access to sunlight, which means that you can’t really have any and all plants you find pretty from the flower market. Whether it’s along your corridor or on your balcony, your first consideration should always be light. Is it a space that gets a whole lot of sun? Or does it only get the morning sun? Is the space bright and airy or somewhat more shaded? How much sunlight can access the space and at what time of the day will determine the plant types you should acquire. There really isn’t a lot of point in gardening should your plants start dying out quickly because conditions do not meet their needs for growth. Once you’ve sorted out the light issue, look carefully into the availability of space. Map out your proposed garden so you buy only what you need. If you are big on herbs, plant things you will eat regularly lest you end up with a crop of stuff you don’t love. Also, be sure to take measurements to ensure the containers and pots you intend to buy will actually fit. As a novice, start small. A simple herb garden of mint, parsleys, rosemary and thyme is a lot easier to maintain than vegetables, fruits and flowers. Whilst at Far East Flora, we also discovered that the staff on deck was excellent in taking us through what we can and can’t plant in accordance to our balcony and/or corridor’s size and position. This is important. You really don’t want to end up buying a whole lot of stuff you don’t need and can’t use. And worse, plants that don’t fit so you wind up wasting time, money, and effort. And yes, a crappy looking garden.

MINI PETUNIA PLANT TYPE : Outdoor FYI : They require some specific growing conditions. They become leggy and sparse, refusing to bloom when they don’t get the right care. CARE INSTRUCTIONS : They need to be in bright, sunny locations and require 6 to 8 hours of sun every day. The more the nutrition, the better the bloom, thus they should be fed with liquid fertilizers every 1 to 2 weeks. WATERING INSTRUCTIONS : Let soil dry up a little between waterings as stalks are prone to rotting. It would be best to water straight into the soil and avoid wetting the stalks and foliage.

PLANT TYPE : Full Sun to Partial Shade FYI : They are sun-loving but despise the rain. CARE INSTRUCTIONS : Fertilise with high phosphorous fertilizers. WATERING INSTRUCTIONS : Sedum is a succulent plant that loves drought conditions, thus water sparingly and usually only when the soil is dry.

PLANT & POT Herbs need only pots that are 15 centimetre (cm) deep. Vegetables, fruits and flowers may require pots that are up to 30 cm deep. The general rule of thumb is that you should re-pot your plants once their roots outgrow their pots. The surest sign that your plants need larger homes is when their roots begin to curl out of the pots, either on the underside or over the edges. When re-potting your plant, don’t get overexcited and buy the prettiest but largest pot available in stores. The new pot should be just one size up (no more than one inch larger in circumference) from the current one your plant is sitting in. This will ensure room for new soil around the root ball as well as optimum root growth, old and new. Secondly, you’ll want to get a pot with up to four half-centimetre holes at the bottom for drainage of excess water (unless of course, your intentions are to drown your plants). Other than that, you can really use almost anything. Plastic tubes and terracotta pots are the gold standard but vintage wooden creates, old kettles, jugs and teapots are ace. PLANT TYPE : Semi-shaded FYI : They will shed their leaves rather frequently if they are not receiving sufficient direct sunlight. CARE INSTRUCTIONS : Japanese Bamboo loves the morning sun and good ventilation. They may, however, get sunburnt under strong afternoon sun. Fertilize them once a month with conventional fast-release granular fertilizers. WATERING INSTRUCTIONS : Water them every alternate day.
AFRICAN VIOLET
PLANT TYPE : Indoor Flowering FYI : They grow and bloom beautifully in bright areas without direct afternoon sunlight. You may fertilize them as and when necessary. One of the best ways to do so is by incorporating liquid fertilizer into the saucer of water. WATERING INSTRUCTIONS : Keep soil relatively moist but not waterlogged or soaked. The best way to water the plant is from bottom up by leaving the pot in a saucer of water.

Mint should be kept in a separate pot as it has a tendency of over-crowding its neighbours. CARE INSTRUCTIONS : Herb plants love a lot of sunlight. So be sure to have them placed in areas where they can enjoy the sun. Position herbs like a school photo with big herbs in the back and small herbs in front. This is to ensure everyone gets enough sun. Feed with organic fertilizers once every 2 weeks. WATERING INSTRUCTIONS : Use only well-drained soil and water them only when the soil is dry to touch as herbs do not like to be constantly wet.

FEED & REAP It’s always best to water your plants early in the morning. Drizzle according to each plant’s needs and try not to over-water. It is much better to water fewer times thoroughly than to water frequently with just a little bit. Every week or so add some worm or compost juice into the mix. If not, be sure to feed your plant with fertilizers once every two weeks or so. What type of fertilizers will be good then? Really, there are only two types (categorized according to the substance they contain) : organic and inorganic. The former is made up of by-products from animals and plants. It is recommended for your pots of herbs, vegetables and edible flowers. The latter is laboratory derived. In other words, they come about through the extraction of nutrient essence needed by plants and come in two forms, fast-release and slow-release. According to the horticulturist at Far East Flora, they are relatively the same except that slow-release fertilizers have a coating that controls the release of nutrients into the soil. It not only lasts longer but also enables nutrient availability to be present over a longer period of time.
