This year, the house of Ferragamo joined forces with Italian furniture manufacturer Molteni+C and Tel-Aviv based designer Ron Gilad to design vignettes for its store windows in Florentine. Gilad’s ability to give weighty materials like marble and steel a lightness and dynamism makes him a force to be reckoned with. Marking this collaboration is the Grado 45° collection - a series of minimalist cabinets, bookcases, mirrors and shelves, which plays with ideas of graphic abstraction and pure geometry. The use of primary colours reiterates the fact of its basic forms. ‘Pana-Cotta’, both heavy and delicate, poses the paradox of fragile stability, while the ‘open box’ outlined coffee tables and console are pure open lightness suggesting hidden treasures. 45°/ Vetrina is a continuation of these themes; the tall cabinet appears like a museum vitrine, enclosing the brand’s select products within a glass and thin metal frame. Collection is available at Molteni+C.

GIORGIO ARMANI It’s just as well that Giorgio Armani’s Casa is flying solo this year with no outside designer collaborations. The collection this season hits a new natural high with fresh pops of colour. Also in the mix were a myriad of chic new shapes including retro-inspired wardrobe cases and Deco-style writing desks. The round Giove table has an exquisite Mexican onyx surface in warm orange tones. In vintage brown oak, the simple and light Great table offers an extremely thin top, while the Gilbert table has its top in striped banana tree framed in canaletto walnut, with either an orange lacquer structure or one of canaletto walnut. Collection is available at Da Vinci Asia. A CHAISE LOUNGE FROM THE COLLECTION
MARNI As follow up to last year’s Salone as well as the recent Art Basel Miami, Marni presented its ‘100 Chairs’ exhibition which includes models and colours linked to the idea of urban sitting rooms. The new collection which composed of chairs, chaise lounge, rocking chairs and tables has been enriched by models in bright colours. Mock sitting rooms have been created in colour variations fit for interior spaces, featuring new models, woven patterns and combinations. Again this production has been entirely made by hand in Colombia by ex-prisoners, aiming to reinforce their resettlement into social and working life.

Marking its 75th anniversary, Knoll presented “Tools for Life,” a new collection of furniture in collaboration with OMA, the collaborative practice co-founded by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. The 12-piece collection was previewed at Prada’s A/W fashion show in Milan (OMA’s think tank AMO has designed the sets for Prada’s incredible catwalk shows since 2004). AMO modelled a radical vision of the ‘ideal house’ at Prada’s vast Fogazzaro show space, incorporating items from the new OMA-Knoll collaboration - the first time the team has showcased furniture design alongside its fashion collections. “Tools for Life” is as modernist as any of Knoll’s preceding and offers a contemporary interface between furniture and people, supporting the ebb and flow of work and social life, while adjusting to the different needs of both.

His revelation came in 1995 amidst the darkening American political and social landscape in which he studied, and his rediscovery of tradition Korean mulberry sought a way paper. THE FUTURE OF THE WORK PLACE.
W
hen husband and wife design duo, Charles and Ray Eames designed a
home over 70 years ago, they conceptualised one for a married couple working in design and graphic arts, whose children were no longer living at home. They wanted a home that would make no demands for itself, and would serve as a background for, as Charles would say, “life in work” and with nature as a “shock absorber.” The house has now become something of an iconographic structure visited by people around the world. Its charm and appeal is perhaps best explained in the words of John Entenza, who commissioned the project. He felt that it “represented an attempt to state an idea rather than a fixed architectural pattern.” While the couple’s architecture list remains short and occasional their design philosophy filters through all of their works from furniture to film and long time collaboration with manufacturer Herman Miller. The Essential Eames: A Herman Miller Exhibition at Marina Bay Sands ArtScience Museum features a thought provoking office concept presenting real office environments designed around urban planning concepts. In response to the new reality of the workplace of decreased real estate and increased mobility, the office must provide clever and inviting spaces that enhance collaboration, productivity, energize and inspire. In this groundbreaking pop-up office concept aptly called The Spontaneous City, the work place is divided into districts and neighbourhoods with distinctive landmarks and pathways. Each district presents a solution for different organisation design. The full range of Herman Miller products is integrated and weaved into the overall narrative. Visitors can experience a real office environment featuring the new Arras Bench and Arras Spine, Layout Studio, Riser desk and more.

LAYOUT STUDIO Layout Studio offers an adaptive system that gives you more from any office space. Created and developed by Herman Miller’s international Research and Development team, Layout Studio’s design is informed by research conducted across the globe. This provided new insight to the rapidly growing need for offices to be more flexible and provide furniture that nurtures all manner of possibilities. Layout Studio provides solutions for offices of every size, from established global organisations to small forward thinking start-ups. Totally flexible, the desk system adapts to changes in technological, social and working trends throughout the world. Layout Studio gives Herman Miller a new platform with which to demonstrate its understanding of the changing needs of the modern workspace. It can facilitate personal one-to-one meetings and larger scale team conferences, provide creative space for brainstorming, and accommodate any individual working style. A new and refined version of the familiar moulded plastic chair, this Moulded Wood in Walnut and chrome base Chair is the epitome of the Eames process— embracing evolution, finding joy in discovery and refinement, and thoughtfully responding to new ways to resolve problems.
Layout Studio uses materials that can be sourced locally, so the manufacturing process can take place near the final destination to reduce shipping and environmental impact. At the end of the product’s life, disassembly is easy, allowing for quick and effective re-use, refurbishment or recycling.

hatever lens one chooses to peer into this house, it’s clear this residence
of a working couple in their 40s with two pre-teenagers, is not your usual home in the heartlands. Deceptively devoid of outlandish features, this family home is refreshingly modern in tone and rich in texture. In short, a knockout. Having seen first hand the works from design firm Metaphor Studio, it’s only a matter of course that the firm’s services are sought after in the next immediate opportunity. Thanks to the firm’s delivery of the recently completed home belonging to the couple’s parents. Coupled with several award-winning residential portfolio by the firm, the deal was sealed almost immediately. The newly acquired five-bedrooms penthouse unit at Northwood just begs to be transformed into the couple’s vision of a tranquil family respite. Early discussions with Creative Director Stephen Goh and Design Director Angela Tantry, revolved around the family’s casual lifestyle, in particular their penchant for nature without its literal and heavy connotations. This referring to their previous home decked in all-over wood details. For their new home, an alternative palette of black, white and gray is adopted by way of the ‘natural shade’ to permeate throughout the interiors. A simple design move but the sophisticated choice of colours simultaneously elevate the apartment’s style quotient in leaps and bounds.
Textured feature wall in slate gray in the living room contributes to the natural theme. Balancing the austerity of the monochromatic palette which can appear ‘cold’ are touches of artistic wood sculptures on display.

Materials selection for the flooring, walls and wood works varies in texture while keeping to the monochromatic palette. This design directive with the aim of making the interiors and appointed spaces clear in form and function. A downside to the less-is-more route is in finding the perfect material in proportion with the scale of the apartment. Large features will overwhelm and crowd while too little will get lost in redundancy. The fact that the apartment appears more light and expansive than its actual 2250 square feet in floor area is testament to the carefully curated elements. Where surfaces are concerned, all are kept smooth and glossy as evident in the hallways where the doors sans handles seem to disappear into the walls.

Even when space challenged, the bathroom exudes a tranquil air in soothing all white interior and fittings in smooth angular lines.
With a penthouse unit, its almost a felony not to integrate the outdoors in especially when the master bedroom is situated in the top most level. Carefully framing un-interupted views of the blue skies are sliding glass doors which also connects to a miniature landscape. Certainly a pretty view to wake-up to every morning, rain or shine. After almost six months of back and forth in design and construction, the apartment’s newly transformed interiors is worth the long wait as its occupants will agree. What began as an empty shell is now a masterful exercise of spatial poetry waiting to be enjoyed by its occupants. SAY YOU SAW IT IN DECORATIONS Metaphor Studio Pte Ltd, www.metaphor-studio.com

But step inside and all thoughts of the ordinary depart as you enter sophisticated space that achieves the difficult feat of appearing pared-back yet totally personal. White walls occasionally punctuated by dark details, act as the backdrop to a palette of natural materials such as marble, wood and glass. Subtle sentimental touches – such as paintings, artworks and keepsakes are evident throughout the house to help ensure while the house is uncluttered, it is never cold or clichÊd. The first thing that the homeowners did was to call upon the services of interior designer Selina Tay from Collective Design, who reconfigured the kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms,

TOP A delightful centrepiece that bridges old to new. BOTTOM Retro meets modern in the study room as a bespoke bookshelf in metal frame calls to mind shelving units of the olden days and shelves and storage boxes in light pine wood indulge in Scandinavian aesthetics.
The master bedroom too spots open plan concept and is the envy of many. Demolishing an entire wall, two bedrooms become one luxurious suite for the couple. Taking full advantage of the space, Luxur created a truly unique bathroom system. Extracting the sink component out of the original bathroom space and setting it up on the perimeters, the designing team expanded the space. Cleverly framed in deep red and adorned with tiles of vintage floral motifs, the would-be obtrusive his-hers wash basin counter is transformed into a feature vanity piece. Out-of-thebox, it is a luxury that many of us secretly long for. Warm and delightful, this Euro-Asia Lodge abode is a romantic canvas of colonial aesthetics laced with Peranakan accents. Simple and cosy, its palette of wood, floral and fabric evokes the soothing essence of a tropical retreat. Unassuming and homely, its tasteful put together leaves a surprisingly unforgettable impression. In short, it is a home with soul and a lasting testimony of Luxur’s keen design abilities. haven’t met them yet and are wondering about Ochre, it isn’t too late for introductions. A British-based furniture, lighting and accessory design company, Ochre is the brainchild of Joanna and Harriet. Their creative journey began way back in the 90s when the two British women met in art school. Drawn together by common ideas and sufficient independence to inspire each other, they made their debut at 100% Design in London in 1996. Their first creation was gessoed lamp bases. Exquisitely crafted, it was a quiet but compelling collection. Delicately coloured, water gilded and perfectly balanced with simple shades, the collection carried the themes of proportion, texture, contrast and finish – all of which became the definition of the duo’s craftsmanship under their brand, Ochre.

in Manhattan. The first US hotel for the British group, the Crosby Street Hotel is one of the most environmentally responsible hotels in the entire United States and accorded with the Gold LEEDS (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) certification by the US Green Building Council. Everything is built with sustainable materials and energy-efficient technology. In keeping with the neighbourhood’s industrial history, the hotel’s facade has been kept minimalist. The exterior of brick, stone and glass pays homage to the surrounding urban landscape, while the floor-to-ceiling warehouse windows are an obvious nod to the iconic SoHo loft look. Furniture, fabrics and finishes are largely American-made, sourced locally from home-bred designers like Philadelphian artisans Galbraith & Paul, who created many of the hand-block printed fabrics. Bathrooms are executed in granite, oak and glass with heated towel rails and anti-misting mirrors. Designed and built by Tim and Kit Kemp, the inspiration for its sassy interiors comes from original art, predominantly by little-known British and Irish artists. Unusual pieces tend to be the starting point for a new hotel’s design, and sculptures and paintings feature heavily throughout the Firmdale properties. No surprise, then, that the centrepiece of this hotel lobby is a stunning work by Scottish paper cut-out artist Jack Milroy. But don’t expect a transatlantic transport of Kemp’s original English style; the Crosby Street Hotel achieves a distinctly American flair without abandoning its British roots. 86 rooms and suites spread over 11 floors and no two rooms are alike. GO-GOGADGET! We’re sure you remember Inspector Gadget, yes? He is that 1980s Canadian animation of a bumbling cyborg detective with a crazy armour of gadgets built into his body and is often stumbling clueless through any case he is given. Not quite the Robocop, the purity of his intentions and earnestness of his attempts gave him superhero legitimacy.
Growing up with Inspector Gadget, we often mused about our ordinariness in comparison to his lack of investigative talent and mediocre mastery of the gadgets: If Gadget could make it, why can’t we? Even if we don’t make the cut for Captain Planet’s supreme team, surely we can still be our own Gadget Hero and transform our homes into a sort of Green headquarters for Mother Earth, can we not? It was 18 years ago that we last caught this animation series on TV, yet his gimmicks and bungling ways remain deeply etched in our minds. As we wondered why, it dawned on us that it wasn’t so much because of the glories behind his successful investigations or the thrill of his adventures. (Seriously, how many of us remember the specifics of each episode?) Rather, it is his earnest desire to do good that made him a hero; it is the ordinariness of his sidekick niece, Penny and pet dog, Brain that brought about extraordinary results. Simple and plain Jane (or Tom, Dick and Harry) as we all are, we too can make a difference because change and causes of good begins in the common individual.

THE FIRST STEPS
Ecovative’s current platform is capable of tuning Myco Foam’s mechanical, water and thermal properties by modulating the filler and fungal tissue to compete with various plastic foams. Astounding right?
“This technology began as our senior design project at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute,” recalls Gavin with a nostalgic smile. “We grew the first prototypes under our beds and had them tested at national laboratories.” Technically, success should immediately follow upon establishing that their new material bench marked well against common plastic foams. Yet, Gavin shares that the toughest part was finding where the material would fit in the market. In late 2007, Ecovative began developing construction material but was stumbled by the large number of regulatory hurdles and scaling challenges associated with the construction industry. “The company pivoted and instead, scaled a protective packaging product, Restore™ Mushroom® Packaging,” says Gavin. “Ecovative licensed this technology in the packaging space to the Sealed Air Corporation in 2012.”
UP & AWAY Today, Ecovative continues to fly the flag of their environmental stewardship high. Sourced regionally, their raw materials come entirely from waste streams of farms that are located within 50 miles of their manufacturing facilities. Ecovative’s current biomaterials are comprised of lignocellulosic agricultural byproducts bound cohesively into designed shapes by the filamentous fungal tissue, Mycelium, analogous to traditional composite fillers and binders, respectively. NIR MEIRI
With Nir Meiri, the man who crafted Desert Storm, Wood Lamp and Marine Light, we learnt to see the relationship between art and nature in a whole new, well pun unintended, light.
AN ORGANIC PLAYGROUND
ALWAYS TO SEE WHAT I CAN SAY AND DO WITH EVERY DAY MATERIALS THAT HAS NOT BEEN SAID AND DONE BEFORE...
Whilst most of us grew up on make-believe games of adventures through the jungle, playing at pirates and pretending to be G.I. ON HEROISM AND DESIGN To live with the gorillas, Gerald Durrell and Dian Fossey were going after what they believed in no matter what the consequences would be. Such tenacity stems from the values of a never-say-die attitude and staying true to oneself. In much the same vein, Nir clearly lives out these principles in his works. “It’s absolutely essential that you always stand up for what you believe in and not let others distract you from your goal,” says Nir. “Along with that, if something does not work out, then try something else. At the end, you will succeed. I truly believe in that.” And indeed he does. Had he wavered, seaweeds would have never found their way onto a lamp shade. Had he thrown in the towel, sand would have

Mother Earth.
Given that we are facing a future where resources are increasingly scarce, green-living is a must for humanity’s survival. The role that green design must then play now and in the near future is education.
Wood Lamp – Moulded into timeless form, contemporary class defines the Wood Lamp. Made of chipboard, Nir challenges the consumer’s perception of what makes for a “low value” product.
This, Nir postulates, has the ability to re-wire the consumers’ perspective so that eco-friendliness becomes the default thinking, the obvious choice.
Desert Storm – Inspired by the sand, this lamp shade brings to mind primitive desert structures while the fixture’s overall form resembles that of plants that blossom in the Mediterranean seashore.

BERNARDITA MARAMBIO I BELIEVE THAT EVERYTHING THAT DEVELOPED IN THE PAST IS ESSENTIAL TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF WHAT WE ARE TODAY.
One man’s junk is another man’s treasure. Rescuing the old technique of starching, Chilean designer Bernardita Marambio transforms waste into items of functional beauty.
A FAMILY TRAIT Bernardita was born in Concepcion, located south of Chile but was brought up in Santiago, the capital. She is the youngest amongst her four brothers, all of whom would go on to choose careers within the Arts sector. From musician to photographer, creativity, she says, is something that runs down the middle of every branch in the Marambio family. Very naturally then,

OLD STUFF FOR NEW THINGS Contrary to popular beliefs, we don’t have to look far for inspirations and good designs don’t necessarily have to be avant-garde. More often than not, great creative ideas stem from the things that accompany us in our everyday. In the same way, head-turning designs are borne out of one’s ability to transform the most ordinary day-to-day item into something else. More poignantly, as Bernardita puts it, “It’s about leading a basic, every day material to another end of its usefulness, understanding and adapting it to something new.”

GETTING INTO THE LAYERS OF NATURE’S BEST SELECTION. TEXT BY ZULFA JK
Who knew that humble wood could be so stylish and sexy with its organic curves and gritty imperfections? There’s now a whole gamut of eco-friendly furniture to choose from to make you feel that, at the very least, you’re not doing any more damage to the environment. And you know what? Today’s products not only make you feel good, but look good thanks to design advances over the last several years—not to mention increased demand for green items that can be proudly displayed and admired. Here are our picks of some of the best-looking furniture in town, the kinds that you don’t really own but to pass on over time.
TABLE TALK ROUGH IT UP The top of this dining table is crafted from century-old recycled wood from horse carriages and doors. Glass top optional although we think it looks better without. Available at Galanga Living.

OLD WORLD CHARM As part of the new Armani Casa Collection, the range was born from an enchanted observation of nature as an internal, infinite and powerful source. The collection is expressed in unusual eco-friendly materials to protect the environment: striped banana tree finishes (gathered after the crops are cut) and Tamo, the Japanese ash wood whose grain seems to reproduce the movements of sand in Zen gardens. This Gabriel wardrobe that was inspired by old trunks is made in Tamo with internal lighting and brown soft leather-covered trim, reminiscent of the wooden construction of vintage travelling containers. Available at Da Vinci Asia.

SOFA SO GOOD Mal Sofa is in Macassar ebony and gloss nickel plated feet & castors. With respect to the natural forms of trees and inherent grain of wood, each piece of furniture is assembled with well defined organic lines and geometric forms using traditional joinery techniques and hand rubbed oil finishes.
